A small number of superspreaders are responsible for the majority of COVID-19 infections. For example, in a contact-tracing effort involving over three million people in India, eight per cent of patients accounted for 60 per cent of the infections, while 70 per cent of the patients infected no one. What do scientists know about why superspreading happens? And what does it mean for controlling the virus?
