(music plays)

Music plays. Fast clip shows young people engaged in different activities. A spinning letter “V” in a circle appears on screen. A caption reads “Teens who volunteers. The title “Circle. Teens who volunteer” appears on screen.

A fast clip shows young kids at an animal adoption centre.

A personal profile appears on screen. A picture of a young woman with long curly brown hair in mini braids appears. She wears a purple shirt and hoop earrings. She holds a rabbit. Next to his picture, a caption reads “Name: Lisa; Age: 18; Volunteer: Toronto Humane Society.”

Lisa says HI, I VOLUNTEER AT THE
TORONTO HUMANE SOCIETY
WHICH IS AN ORGANIZATION
THAT TAKES CARE
OF STRAY OR
ABANDONED ANIMALS.
THEY TAKE CARE OF
THEIR HEALTH NEEDS
OR THEY GIVE THEM
MEDICAL ATTENTION
AND THEY
REHABILITATE THEM
UNTIL THEY'RE READY
FOR ADOPTION,
WHENEVER THAT
TIME MAY COME.

Another profile appears on screen with a picture of a boy in his mid-teens with short brown straight hair. He wears glasses, jeans and a yellow sweatshirt. The caption next to the picture reads “Name: Sharzad; Age: 16; Volunteer: Toronto Humane Society.”

He says I'VE BEEN VOLUNTEERING AT
THE TORONTO HUMANE SOCIETY
FOR ABOUT THREE
MONTHS NOW.
SINCE NOVEMBER.
AND BASICALLY MY
LOVE FOR ANIMALS
DREW ME TO THIS PLACE.
HOPEFULLY I WANT TO
BECOME A VETERINARIAN
OR GO INTO
ANIMAL SCIENCES.
I THINK THIS IS THE
BEST PLACE TO START.

(music plays)

Lisa says I'M A BUNNY CUDDLER.
AND WHAT I DO IS COME IN
TO PLAY WITH THE RABBITS.
I USUALLY BRING THEM
TREATS AND TOYS.
I PLAY WITH THEM
IN THEIR CAGES.
I PICK THEM UP
AND STROKE THEM.
IT RELAXES THEM AS
WELL AS MYSELF.
IT'S A REALLY GOOD
STRESS RELIEVER.

Sharzad says MY JOB AT THE TORONTO
HUMANE SOCIETY
IS A VOLUNTEER
INFORMATION AGENT.
WHAT I DO IS THAT I
CIRCULATE THE DOG KENNEL
THE DOG ROOM OR
THE CAT ROOM.
AND I ASSIST PEOPLE WITH
WHATEVER QUESTIONS
THEY HAVE ABOUT THE
ADOPTION PROCESS.
IF THEY HAVE TROUBLE
READING THE KENNEL CARDS,
I ASSIST THEM
WITH THAT.
THIS IS MEEW MEEW.
THIS IS SASAR.
HE'S A NEUTERED
MALE, PIT BULL CROSS.
THIS IS MACK.
HE'S A NEUTERED MALE,
STAFFORDSHIRE MIX.
IT SAYS HE'S ON A MEDICAL
WAIVER FOR HIS SKIN.

Lisa says WHEN YOU GO TO
VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION,
THEY'D LIKE YOU TO
VOLUNTEER FOR AT LEAST
TWO HOURS A WEEK FOR AT LEAST
SIX MONTHS OF THE YEAR.
SO, PERSONALLY I COME IN MAYBE
TWO OR THREE TIMES A WEEK
DURING MY SPARES
OR AFTER SCHOOL.
AND I STAY A GOOD ONE
OR ONE-AND-A-HALF HOURS
WHEN I COME HERE.

Sharzad says I COME IN BASICALLY EVERY
SATURDAY OR SUNDAY.
NOW MAYBE A SUNDAY
FOR FOUR HOURS.
WHEN I FIRST STARTED AT
THE TORONTO HUMANE SOCIETY
I BASICALLY KNEW NOTHING
ABOUT THE BREEDS OF DOGS.
I JUST KNEW THEY
WERE LOVING ANIMALS.
BUY IT'S VERY INTERESTING
TO FIND OUT THEIR GENETICS,
WHAT THEY'RE MADE UP OF.

Lisa says I THINK WHAT I DO WITH THE
ANIMALS IS VERY IMPORTANT.
BECAUSE A LOT OF THE RABBITS
HERE AT THE HUMANE SOCIETY
HAVE SUFFERED SOME KIND OF
TRAUMA OR SOME KIND OF ABUSE.
SO IT'S VERY DIFFICULT
FOR THEM TO REHABILITATE
THEMSELVES WITH PEOPLE AND BE
COMFORTABLE WITH HUMANS AGAIN.
SO BY PLAYING WITH THE
ANIMALS, THEY GET A LITTLE
MORE ACCUSTOMED TO HUMANS
AND THEY REALIZE
DESPITE WHATEVER BAD
EXPERIENCES THEY MAY
HAVE HAD, NOT ALL
HUMANS ARE BAD.
I THINK HE'S STILL TESTING
ME OUT A LITTLE BIT.
BUT NOW HE SEEMS TO
BE REALLY RELAXED,
CRAWLING ALL OVER ME.
JUST DOING WHATEVER,
GETTING COMFORTABLE,
SEARCHING AROUND.
HE'S RIGHT IN
MY FACE TOO.
VOLUNTEERING IT STARTED
OUT AS SOMETHING REQUIRED
TO DO BY MY SCHOOL, BUT
AFTER A FEW VOLUNTEER
EXPERIENCES, I HAD SUCH
POSITIVE EXPERIENCES I THOUGHT
IT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO GET
OUT AND HELP YOUR COMMUNITY.

Sharzad says I ENJOY THAT IT GIVES YOU
EXPOSURE TO KNOW IS THIS
ACTUALLY WHAT YOU WANT
TO DO WHEN YOU GROW UP?
SO IT GIVES YOU A CHANCE TO
EXPLORE AVENUES BASED ON
YOUR CAREER, YOUR PERSONALITY,
WHAT YOU LIKE OR DON'T LIKE.

Lisa says WHAT I FEEL I'M TAKING
AWAY FROM VOLUNTEERING
AT THE HUMANE SOCIETY
IS A GREATER SENSE
OF RESPONSIBILITY.
IT'S A COMMITMENT
THAT YOU HAVE TO DO.
AND I'M TAKING WHAT A GOOD
SENSE OF SATISFACTION,
TAKING AWAY A FEELING OF PRIDE
KNOWING I'VE HELPED THE ANIMALS.

Sharzad says IT JUST GIVES
YOU A PURPOSE.
THESE ANIMALS NEED ME.
I NEED TO BE HERE.

Lisa says TO OTHER KIDS I WOULD
DEFINITELY SUGGEST IF YOU WANT
TO TRY VOLUNTEERING, JUST
GET OUT AND DO IT ONCE.
TRY IT, AND I'M SURE
YOU'RE GOING TO WALK AWAY
WITH A REALLY
POSITIVE EXPERIENCE.
THERE ARE SO MANY
BRANCHES OF VOLUNTEERING.
YOU CAN VOLUNTEER
WITH PEOPLE.
YOU CAN VOLUNTEER
IN AN OFFICE.
NO MATTER WHAT YOU ENJOY, PEOPLE
SKILLS OR BEING PERSONAL,
THERE'S DEFINITELY DIFFERENT
BRANCHES OF VOLUNTEERING
AND YOU'RE GUARANTEED
YOU'RE GOING TO FIND
SOMETHING YOU LIKE IN IT.

A caption reads “A production of TVOntario. The Ontario Educational Communication Authority. 2003.”
