A title appears inside the shape of a house: More to Life. Words spin against a red and orange background: Health, Family, Home, Money, Fitness, Life. Fast clips show images related to the previous concepts, such as a dollar bill, a wheat field, and strands of DNA.

In animation, the title appears inside the shape of a house: "More to life."

Then, Mary Ito sits in a studio with textured yellow walls and a door in the background.

Mary is in her late thirties, with short black hair and bangs. She's wearing a black blazer over a black shirt, and a choker necklace.

She says HELLO. I'M MARY ITO. WELCOME TO "MORE TO LIFE." LATER OBJECT IN THE SHOW, WE'LL TALK TO DEBORAH AL HIS, THE AUTHOR OF A COMPELLING CHILDREN'S LOOK THAT'S MAKING HEADLINE. BUT FIRST, WE'LL TALK ABOUT GIFTS FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN THAT YOU CAN MAKE AT HOME. NOW, IF YOU NEED SOME INSPIRATION, MY FIRST GUEST CAN CERTAINLY HELP. AMBER IS THE OWNER OF A AND E DESIGN AND HAS LOTS OF GREAT IDEAS TO SHARE.

Amber is in her late twenties, with curly brown hair in a bun. She's wearing a gray sweater.

Mary continues WHETHER YOU'RE THE CREATIVE MARTHA STEWART TYPE OR JUST A WANNA BE. WE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU IF YOU NEED VISOR QUESTIONS ON A TRICKY CRAFT PROJECT. GIVE US A CALL. OR MAYBE YOU HAVE SOME CLEVER TRICKS OF YOUR OWN THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH US. THE NUMBER TO DIAL IS...

A caption reads "416-484-2727. 1-888-411-1234."

Mary continues NO E-MAILED TODAY. SORRY, AMBER. WE'LL JUST TAKE YOUR PHONE CALL. THANK YOU FOR COMING IN.

Amber says THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME.

Mary says YOU KNOW, IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE BEFORE WE WENT ON THE AIR, WE TALKED ABOUT DIFFERENT CRAFT AND DESIGN SHOWS. WHAT'S THE BEST ONE THAT YOU LIKE ON THE TUBE.

Amber says I LOVE THE ONES WHERE THEY CHANGE ROOM.

Mary says THAT'S ON TV.

Amber says IT'S FUN. VERY FUN.

Mary says SO NOT A HUGE MARTHA STEWART FAN YOURSELF?

The caption changes to "Amber Tiede. Floral and Craft Designer."

Amber says I LOVE WHAT SHE DOES. I LOVE WHAT HER TEAM DOES. BUT, UM, BUT I THINK FOR AN AVERAGE EVERYDAY PEOPLE, WITH THE LIMITED TIME THAT WE HAVE ON OUR HANDS, UM, WE NEED THINGS THAT ARE EASY AND QUICK AND... AND FUN TO DO. AND, UM, AND... AND THAT I THINK IS NOT SO MUCH THE MARTHA... MARTHA STEWART TYPE BUT CAN STILL GET THE SAME LOOK BUT FOR LESS HASSLE.

Mary says WE KNEW THE REAL TEST FOR YOU WAS HAVING A THREE AND-A-HALF MONTH OLD AND A 22 MONTH OLD AT HOME , RIGHT? AND YOU COULD STILL MAKE THE CRAFTS.

Amber says RIGHT.

Mary says I UNDERSTAND YOU STUDIED DESIGN IN LONDON AND COPENHAGEN AND THE U.S. I WONDER DOES IT DIFFER? DO CRAFTS DIFFER IN THE WAY THEY'RE DONE AND THE ATTITUDE OF CRAFTS DEPENDING ON WHICH COUNTRY YOU'RE IN?

Amber says NO, I DON'T THINK SO. I THINK EVERYONE HAS A LOVE TO MAKE THINGS. TO MAKE THEIR ENVIRONMENT MORE BEAUTIFUL SPACE. UM, AND... AND I THINK THAT ESPECIALLY IN SCANDINAVIA, PEOPLE USE A LOT MORE LIVE PLANTS AND CUT FLOWERS AND ARTISTIC ARRANGEMENTS OF THOSE THINGS. THEY SOLD THEM ON THE STREET CORNER AND EVERYWHERE AND I THINK IT'S BECAUSE THEY HAD SO MUCH OF THE COLD, DARK WINTER TO DEAL WITH EVERY DAY THAT THEY BRIGHTEN UP THE ENVIRONMENT WITH THESE AND PAPER CRAFTS AND HOME MADE DECORATIONS AS WELL. I NOTICED THAT AS THE BIGGEST STRIKING DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THOSE COUNTRIES AND THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA.

Mary says I'M WONDERING, I DON'T KNOW IF THERE'S A TRENDS RIGHT NOW TOWARDS MORE OF THIS KIND OF HOME CRAFTS, MORE NESTING GOING ON, YOU KNOW, COCOONING THAT THEY TALK ABOUT. A LOT MORE.

Amber says A LOT MORE NESTING AND GETTING BACK TO THE BASICS. I FINDS, TOO, THAT YOU ALWAYS REMEMBER THE GIFT THAT IS YOU GOT FROM SOMEONE THAT WERE HOME MADE BECAUSE THEY DO COME FROM THE HEART AND THEY'VE TAKEN THAT EFFORT. YOU HAVEN'T JUST GONE DOWN TO THE STORE AND BOUGHT A PACKAGE OF SOMETHING AND WRAPPED IT UP. AND HAD IT WRAPPED FOR YOU. YOU PUT TIME AND EFFORT INTO IT. AND THOSE ARE KEEPSAKES.

Mary says LET'S LOOK AT POSSIBLE KEEPSAKES. LET'S START OFF WITH... YOU HAVE IDEAS FOR GREETING CARDS. THESE ARE BETTER I'M SURE THAN THE ONES MY KIDS MAKE AND SCRIBBLE.

As she takes out several cards, Amber says THE ONES YOUR KIDS MAKE THAT SCRIBBLE ARE WONDERFUL. THEY'RE FINE TO SEND OUT. THERE'S WRONG... NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. AND A LOT OF THESE, THE ONES I MADE UP HERE ARE COST EFFECTIVE AS WELL. COST LESS THAN A DOLLAR EACH. MADE ON WONDERFUL PAPER.

Mary says THESE ARE BEAUTIFUL.

As Mary examines a card with pictures of a house and a star, Amber says THIS IS JUST MADE WITH THE SEE CYCLED GREETING CARD. A GREETING CARD FROM LAST YEAR AND CUT IT OUT AND USE SPRAY ADHESIVE AND USE A NEW CAR.

Mary says SPRAY...

Amber says WITH PAPER THINGS, THAT'S THE BEST WAYED TO DO IT.

Mary says WHAT'S... WHAT ABOUT THIS PAPER THAT YOU HAVE FOR THE CARD?

Amber says THESE YOU CAN BUY IN PACKAGES. I BOUGHT THIS IN A REGULAR STATIONARY STORE FOR 6 dollars 90 FOR A PACKAGE OF TEN AND THEN DECORATE IT YOURSELF.

Mary says THAT LOOKS PROFESSIONAL.

Amber says YEAH.

Mary says AND THEN THIS IS WRAP.

Amber says YEAH, AND YOU CAN BUY THAT IN ANY CRAFT STORE.

She shows a card with green triangles and says SO THIS IS JUST KIND OF A MODERN TAKE ON SOME CHRISTMAS TREES. THIS IS A WONDERFUL JAPANESE PAPER. AND, UM, AND WE HAVE A COUPLE MORE HERE.

She shows a card with a blue star, then one with a blue gift box and continues THIS IS LIKE FOR... FOR ANY OF YOUR FRIENDS THAT MIGHT BE CELEBRATING HANUKKAH. AND... AND THIS IS JUST A BIT OF WRAPPING PAPER WITH... WITH, UM, WITH A BOW GLUED ON THE FRONT.

Mary says OH, THIS IS SO... THIS LOOKS LIKE ORIGAMI PAPER, IS IT?

Amber says NO, THAT'S COMPLIMENTS OF IKEA.

Mary says SPEAKING THAT HAVE JAPANESE PAPER, THERE ARE ALL KIND OF BEAUTIFUL PAPER THAT YOU CAN GET.

Amber says YEAH, GORGEOUS, GORGEOUS PAPERS.

Mary says OH, THESE ARE GREAT IDEAS. IT'S KIND OF A FUN PROJECT FOR KIDS, TOO.

Amber hands Mary a card with a drawing of green leaves and an actual branch tied to it and says FUN GIFT TAG. I LIKE TO DO THIS ON MY PRESENTS. THIS IS ACTUALLY A CARD FROM BEFORE. I JUST CUT IT OUT AND BE DID AND TIE ON SOME... LIKE IN THIS CASE, REAL MISTLETOE OR FUR OR TRIMMINGS FROM THE CHRISTMAS TREE AND TIE IT ON THE FRONT OF YOUR PACKAGES AND IT CAN REALLY MAKE A NICE PRESENTATION THAT WAY.

Mary says THAT'S CUTE.

Amber says THERE ARE SOME OTHER ONES HERE THAT... THAT SHOW, UM, SHOW GREAT DESIGNS. FOR DOING, FOR DOING GRIFT wrap.

Amber hands Mary two wrapped presents and says THIS... GIFT WRAP. THIS HAS A CARD THAT GOES WITH IT. THIS GIFT WRAP WAS MADE BY CUTTING A PEAR IN HALF AND DIPPING IT IN SILVER PAINT AND BLOCKING ON TO THE PAPER AND ON TO THE FRONT OF YOUR CARD HERE.

She shows a card with a silver pear matching a box with silver pear wrapping.

Mary says OKAY.

Amber says AND THIS IS A FUN PROJECT FOR KIDS AS WELL. IT'S WONDERFUL. UM, YOU...

Mary says HANG ON. I'M STILL IN THIS PEAR HERE. I'M JUST ADMIRING EVERYTHING. THIS IS SO... SO SMART. BECAUSE WHAT YOU'VE ALSO DONE HERE, YOU'VE USED A SILVER PEN RIGHT.

Amber says YES.

Mary says AND YOU PUT A PARTRIDGE IN A PEAR TREE ALONG THE SIDE OF IT.

Amber says YES. IT'S A FANCY ART CARD AND IT'S ACTUALLY SOMETHING THAT YOU MADE.

Mary says SORRY. WHAT KIND OF PAINT WAS THAT... THIS THAT YOU USED?

Amber says ANY REGULAR ACRYLIC CRAFT PAINT. IT COME IN TUBES THIS BIG AND YOU CAN GET IT ANY CRAFT STORE AROUND. SENTIMENTS AND... OR MICHAELS AND COMES IN GOLD AND COPPER AND ALL SORTS OF FUN METALLICS. THIS IS ANOTHER FUN IDEA, UM, IT'S JUST...

She shows Mary a wrapped box with a Christmas card glued onto it and says THIS IS ACTUALLY A CARD THAT... THAT I RECEIVED. AND I JUST PASTED IT ON THE FRONT. AND THIS IS A RECYCLED PAPER BAG AND SOME MORE OF THAT RAFFIA. IT MAKES A FUN KIND OF COUNTRY LOOKING PRESENTATION.

Mary says NOTHING GOES TO WASTE AT YOUR HOUSE.

Amber says NOTHING GOES TO WEIGHS.

Mary says SO... NOTHING GOES TO WASTE.

Amber says SO YOU TAKE ALL THE CARDS YOU GOT FROM LAST YEAR AND USE THEM AGAIN NEXT YEAR.

Mary says MAKE SURE THEY DON'T GO TO THE SAME PERSON.
YOU HAVE TO KEEP THAT STRAIGHT. THAT'S WONDERFUL.

Amber says AND THIS HERE IS ANOTHER FUN WAY TO PACKAGE GIFTS.

She hands Mary a tin can wrapped in transparent cellophane and says UM, THIS IS GREAT BECAUSE... BECAUSE IT'S ACTUALLY A RECYCLED SOUP CAN. A TIN CAN. MAKE GREAT CONTAINERS. ANY CANS LIKE THAT MAKE GREAT CONTAINERS. JUST BE CAREFUL NOT TO PUT FOOD PRODUCT IN THEM. YOU CAN WASH THEM OUT AND USE THEM FOR ALL SORTS OF THINGS. THIS YEAR, I... THIS HERE, I USED A BOW. AND THEY MAKE GREAT CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS AS WELL AS BEING TIES ON PACKAGES.

Mary says THAT'S GREAT. VERY SMART. WHAT ABOUT AS FAR AS TRIMMING THE TREE? ANY IDEAS ON THAT.

Amber says SURE. I HAVE ALL SORTS OF IDEAS, ACTUALLY. THESE ARE ALSO SOME FUN RECYCLED, UM, WAYS TO USE WHAT YOU HAVE ON HAND TO MAKE WONDERFUL TREE TRIMS. THIS IS ACTUALLY A LID FROM... FROM A JUICE CAN.

She shows Mary a flat round object.

Mary says THIS IS WHAT...

Amber says I FOUND THIS. AND IT IS SO CUTE. YOU COULD DO LIKE A SANTA CLAUS ON THERE AND DO A SNOWMAN HERE OR... OR PERSONALIZE THEM. JUST PAINT SOMETHING VERY SIMPLE ON IT, DOESN'T HAVE TO BE, UM, YOU KNOW, SUPER ARTISTIC AND WHIMSICAL AND ALSO A FUN PROJECT FOR KIDS TO WORK ON.

Mary says AGAIN, WOULD YOU USE ACRYLIC PAINT.

Amber says YEAH, THOSE ACRYLIC CRAFT PAINT WORK GREAT.

Mary says AS FAR AS GETTING WET, IS THERE A PROBLEM?

Amber says THERE'S A FINISH THAT YOU PUT OVER THERE. THAT'S A CLEAR FINISH. YOU CAN GET IT IN MATTE OR SHINY AND PAINT IT OVER THE TOP AFTER THE PAINT DRYS AND YOU'RE THERE.

Mary says WONDERFUL. YOU KNOW, AT HOME, UM, WITH YOUR TREE, UM, DO YOU... DO YOU TEND TO HAVE A... YOU KNOW HOW SOME PEOPLE HAVE THEMES. AND THE WHOLE TREE WILL BE ONE THEME OR MAYBE ONE COLOUR OR D. DO YOU GO FOR THAT KIND OF LOOK? WHAT DO YOU DO?

Amber says I THINK IT LOOKS VERY NICE. BUT I ALSO LIKE, UM, TO HAVE SOME INTERESTS. UM, AND... AND I THINK IT'S FUN TO... TO COMBINE, UM, WONDERFUL FANCY ORNAMENTS, MAYBE THAT YOU BOUGHT IN A STORE, WITH, UM, WITH... WITH SOME THINGS THAT YOU PICKED UP ON A TRIP. ANYTHING. LIKE, UM, LIKE SOMETHING YOU FOUND IN OUR YARD, LIKE SAY YOU FOUND A NEAT BIRD'S NEST. PUT A COUPLE OF BEAUTIFUL GOLD EGGS IN IT OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT AND... AND TIE THAT TO YOUR TREE. IF YOUR CHILD MAKES AN ORNAMENT AT SCHOOL, PUT THAT IN TOO. YOU KNOW, UM, I DON'T THINK IT'S GOOD TO GET SO STUCK ON, YOU KNOW, MY WHOLE TREE HAS TO BE GOLD AND BURGUNDY AND THAT'S IT. KIND OF THINK OUTSIDE OF THAT AND SEE HOW CREATIVE AND FUN YOU CAN GET.

Mary says OKAY. LET'S REMIND OUR VIEWERS HERE IF YOU JUST TUNED IN, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT ALL KINDS OF CRAFT IDEAS FOR THE HOLIDAYS. WHETHER IT'S FOR YOUR TABLE OR FOR YOUR TREE OR GIFT IDEAS, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, OR, UM, OR IF YOU HAVE ANY, UM, ANY TIPS, UM, ADVICE, THINGS THAT HAVE WORKED FOR YOU, WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU TODAY ON HOLIDAY SUGGESTIONS. PLEASE CALL US TODAY. THE NUMBER IN TORONTO IS...

The phone numbers reappear briefly.

Mary continues AND MORE STUFF. WHAT'S THIS?

Amber shows her a star made of crochet knitting and a lightbulb painted white says THESE ARE MORE HOLIDAY TREE TRIMMINGS THAT YOU CAN MAKE EASILY. THIS COULD ALSO BE A TAG FOR A GIFT. THIS IS A LITTLE 49 CENT STUDMAN'S DOILEY SPECIAL. PUT SOME TRMINGS ON IT. THERE'S A VINTAGE BUTTON THERE. THIS I THOUGHT WAS FUN. THIS I FOUND DOWN AT THE PARIS CHRISTMAS SHOW THIS YEAR. AND, UM, IN PARIS, ONTARIO. IT'S... IT'S AN OLD LIGHT BULB THAT SOMEONE HAS PAINTEDED UP. AND I THOUGHT THAT'S A VERY WHIMSICAL KIND OF...

Mary says OH, TO PUT ON A TREE.

Amber says OH, THAT IS CUTE.

Mary says YOU DIDN'T PAINT THAT YOURSELF, DID YOU?

Amber says NO, I DIDN'T DO THAT. I FOUND THAT ONE.

Mary says YEAH, THAT IS SMART.

Amber says THESE ARE GREAT. THESE ARE REALLY FUN, UM, ORNAMENTS THAT YOU CAN MAKE.

She hands Mary flat ornaments made of a glistening material and says CUT THEM OUT WITH COOKIE CUTTERS. IT IS PACKAGING. THOSE PACKAGING ENVELOPES THAT COME IN THE FUN COLOURS LIKE FOR GIFT THAT IS YOU SEND THROUGH THE MAIL. YOU CAN REUSE THEM. YOU CAN MAKE THEM INTO ALL SORTS OF FUN THINGS. TEENAGERS WOULD LOVE THIS ESPECIALLY. IT'S KIND OF A FUN KIND OF, UM, MATERIAL AND THEY ALSO COMES IN... IN HOLIDAY TRIM. IT'S KIND OF FUN AND SQUISHY AND ALMOST LOOKS QUILTED.

Mary says OH, THAT'S GREAT. AND ALL THE DIFFERENT COLOURS. THAT LOOKS NICE ON A TREE. RIGHT. RIGHT.

Amber says NOW, UM, WHAT ABOUT... LET'S MOVE ON TO GREENERY BECAUSE YOU HAVE SO MUCH GREENERY IN HERE. ARE THERE ANY NEW IDEAS AS FAR AS POTS FOR PLANTS. I KNOW SOME PEOPLE LIKE TO GIVE POTTED PLANTS FOR CHRISTMAS.

Amber says RIGHT. RIGHT. BESIDES LIKE THE STANDARD FOR... FOIL WRAP OR PAPER TRIMMING. I WOULD DO SOMETHING FUN THAT... THAT MATCHES UP WITH WHOEVER YOU'RE GIVING, UM, THE PLANT TO. LIKE SAY IF THEY REALLY LOVE, UM, COOKING OR IF THEY REALLY LOVE GARDEN. PUT IT IN A BEAUTIFUL GARDENING POT OR DRUG OR A WOODEN TAPER. LIKE THIS ONE HERE, YOU CAN KIND OF SEE HERE THAT THIS IS A WONDERFUL FOOD EN... WOODEN POT. DO SOMETHING THAT THEY CAN USE LATER ON. UM, AND... AND LIKE MAYBE LIKE A... LIKE A GALVINIZED METAL BUCKET THAT THEY COULD USE OUTSIDE OF... OF, UM ON THEIR PAT OWE IN THE SPRING. PUT A BEAUTIFUL POINSETTA IN THAT WITH MOSS IN IT AND PUT SOME CONES AND THINGS IN IT. MAKE IT LOOK WONDERFUL THAT WAY.

Mary says YEAH, ONE YEAR ACTUALLY WE GOT A NICE GIFT. INSTEAD OF JUST GETTING A BOTTLE OF WINE, WE GOAT A BOTTLE OF WINE IN A BEAUTIFUL PLANTER. IT WAS SO NICE. AND IT WAS... WE GOT A BOTTLE OF WINE IN A BEAUTIFUL PLANTER. IT WAS SO NICE. AND THERE WERE FOOD PRODUCT AS WELL. BUT THE PLANTER I USED AFTERWARD. IT WAS SUCH A NICE GIFT.

Amber says THAT'S GREAT. A LOT OF THE GIFT IS IN THE PRESENTATION. IF YOU PACKAGE EVEN THE SIMPLEST LITTLE THING UP WONDERFULLY AND CREATIVELY, IT MAKES IT ALL THAT MORE SPECIAL.

Mary says UH-HUH.
OKAY. LET'S TAKE CALLS NOW. LISA IS ON THE LINE FROM ETOBICOKE. HELLO.

The Caller says HI, MARY, HOW ARE YOU?

Mary says I'M FINE, THANKS.

The Caller says THIS GIRL IS VERY GREAT. VERY IMPRESSIVE.

Mary says SHE'S GOOD.

The Caller says MY FAMILY IS FROM NORWAY AND MY COUSINS, IT'S SO CUTE, AT ABOUT AGE 3 THEY START MAKING LITTLE SNOWMEN OUT OF THE EGG CORNS. YOU KNOW, THEY CUT THEM IN HALF AND THEY PUT THEM ON, UM, LIKE A TWEED, UM, MATERIAL AND THEY MAKE LIKE A LITTLE WALL HANGING FOR ME. I'VE GOT SECOND COUSINS NOW. SO THEY'RE STARTING TO DO IT. AND, UM, AND THEIR TREES ARE ALL DECK CRATED ONLY BY KID'S STUFF. THEY DON'T BUY ORNAMENT... ALL DECORATED BY KID'S STUFF. THEY DON'T BUY ORNAMENTS AND AN IDEA, MY HUSBAND FOR HIS BIRTH I DON'T HAVE A LOT OF O IN... A LOT OF MONEY AND I'LL PUT MY HEART INTO IT AND I PUT... GOT A PICTURE OF HOMER SIMPSON OUT OF THE TV GUIDE AND I ENLARGED IT AND I MADE A TABLECLOTH. I USED ACRYLIC PAINT AND A FELT MARKER AND A BACK OUTLINE HIM AND THEN I HAVE NOW MADE IT WATERPROOF.

Mary says THAT'S SMART.

The Caller says I CAN'T PUT MY CUP ON IT, MY TEA CUP AND I SAID WHY NOT. I SAID IT'S NOT GOING TO STAIN IT AND HE... I THINK HE LIKED THAT BETTER THAN I... IF I WENT AND BOUGHT HIM A DVD PLAYER.

Mary says LISA, I LOVE THAT IDEA. THAT IS GREAT. AND I MEAN, YOU KNOW, HOMER SIMPSON IS ONE. BUT I SUPPOSE IF YOU HAVE OTHER, UM, YOU KNOW, HEROES OR, UM, OR, YOU KNOW, ANIMATED CHARACTERS THAT KIDS' LIKE, YOU CAN DO THE SAME THING. I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT EN LARGEING... HE BE LARGING IT AND PUTTING IT ON... ABOUT ENLARGING IT AND PUTTING IT ON A TABLECLOTH. SHE TALKED ABOUT THE ACORNS EARLIER. ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THAT?

Amber says NO, I'M NOT. BUT I LOVE ACORNS.

Mary says THAT REMINDS ME... I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE USING VARIOUS NUTS AS ORNAMENTAL HANGING AND I HAVE SEEN SOMEONE USE HALF A WALL NUT AND THEY MADE, UM, MADE A LITTLE MOUSE AND THEY PUT IT IN THE WALL MUTT... WALNUT. THAT'S ADORABLE. HAVE YOU SEEN THAT? IS THAT POPULAR?

Amber says YEAH, ANYTHING THAT'S NATURAL AND RAID YOUR REFRIGERATOR AND RAID YOUR CUPBOARDS AND YOU CANNOT BELIEVE THE CREATIVE THINGS THAT YOU CAN MAKE WITH WHAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR KITCHEN. YOU'LL SEE LATER ON IN THE SHOW, THERE'S A WREATH THAT WE'VE DECORATED WITH VARIOUS TYPES OF NUTS AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF IT AND IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL.

Mary says UH-HUH.

Amber says AND I THINK IT'S A GREAT IDEA.

Mary says OKAY. LET'S TAKE ANOTHER CALL NOW. JULIETTE FROM TORONTO ON THE LINE. HI.

The Caller says HELLO.

Mary says HI, GO AHEAD.

The Caller says OH, I JUST WANT TO TELL THAT YOU THERE IS JUST... THIS PRODUCT BY CRAYOLA CALLED MODEL MAGIC.

Mary says YES.

The Caller says AND, UM, IT'S VERY, VERY GOOD FOR MAKING CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS BECAUSE IT WON'T JUT YOUR TREE BRANCHES AND, UM, AND YOU CAN MAKE ALL KINDS OF THINGS WITH IT. IN FACT, I DO TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO MAKE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS.

Mary says REALLY? DO YOU USE THE MODEL MAGIC WHEN YOU TEACH?

The Caller says YES. YOU CAN GET IT IN ANY CRAFT STORE. GRAND AND TOY OR TOYS R US AND IT'S VERY GOOD. IT'S BY CRAYOLA. IT IS TRULY MAGICAL.

Mary says THANKS SO MUCH. ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THAT?

Amber says YES. IT'S FUN.

Mary says I THINK THEY... I HAVE SEEN IT. IT'S VERY LIGHTWEIGHT, ISN'T IT?

Amber says I THINK SO, YES.

Mary says NOW, LET'S MOVE ON. WE TALKED ABOUT POTS THERE. WHAT ABOUT PLANTS? DO WE HAVE SOME SUGGESTIONS ABOUT, YOU KNOW, WHATED TO DO WITH A PLAN?

Amber takes out a small plant in a square pot, with a large golden bow on it and says WELL, I WOULD SAY LIKE THIS WAS SITTING ON MY KITCHEN TABLE. AND TO DRESS IT UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS. JUST PUT, UM, PUT AN INFORMAL BOW AND... AND MAYBE TIE ON AN ORNAMENT.

Mary says THAT'S A NICE POT, TOO.

Amber says YES, THIS IS VERY FUN. AND GOLD AND BLACK.

Mary says VERY NICE. YEAH, THAT'S A NICE GIFT TOO.

Amber says THIS IS PERFECT. THE PERLITE HOSTESS GIFT OR SOMEONE... IF SOMEONE CAME TO STAY. THIS IS ALSO SOMETHING FUN YOU CAN DO. I JUST TOOK A PLANTER THAT I HAD.

Mary says RIGHT.

Amber says AND, UM, AND ADDED IN SOME CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS, TIED IN THIS STAR HERE. AND THESE ARE WONDERFUL. UM, AND ANY TYPE OF BULB PLANTS DURING THE SEASON GROW VERY NICELY IN YOUR HOME. AND THEN... THEN BY THE SPRINGTIME, YOU CAN PUT THEM OUTSIDE AND YOU ALSO HAVE, HAVE AN ADDITION TO YOUR GUARD EVEN THAT'S SO FUNNY YOU MENTION THAT BECAUSE I WAS TALKING TO MY RESEARCHER ABOUT THIS... GARDEN EVEN.

Mary says THAT'S SO FUNNY THAT YOU MENTION THAT BECAUSE MY RESEARCHER ABOUT...

Amber says IN YOUR GARDEN...

Mary says THAT'S SO FUNNY BECAUSE I MENTION TODAY MY RESEARCH ABOUT IT AND... AND THAT'S...

Amber says THAT'S PURPLE NARCISE.

Mary says THAT'S GREAT. WHAT ABOUT THE GREENERY OVER THERE. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH THAT?

Amber says THESE ARE WONDERFUL WAYS TO DECORATE YOUR HOME WITH. THESE ARE JUST... THIS IS A POT I HAD OUT ON THE PATIO. BROUGHT IT IN. PUT SOME FLORIST OASIS IN IT.

Mary says BRING IT OVER SO THAT I CAN GET A CLOSE LOOK.

Amber hands Mary a basket of fruit with leaves and pine tree branches, and says AND... AND JUST USE SOME THINGS THAT I HAPPEN TO HAVE.

Mary says YEAH.

Amber says NOW ARE THESE... OKAY, THAT... THESE ARE REAL PEARS.

Mary says OH, THEY ARE REAL PEARS.

Amber says AND A POMEGRANATE AND AN APPLE AND AROUND ORANGE WITH CLOVES IN IT AND THIS IS CALLED CELANI. YOU CAN GET IT IN ANY GREENHOUSE OR FLORIST WILL SELL YOU SOME AND YOU JUST PUT IT IN SOME SOAKED OASIS WITH SOME MOSS. IT'S VERY EASY TO DO AND THERE YOU GO.

Mary says SORRY WHAT DO YOU PUT IN THE SOAKED OASIS?

Amber says ALL OF THIS.

Mary says YOU PUT ALL OF IT IN. AND SOAKED OASIS.

Amber says SOAKED OASIS IS A FOAM WITH SOAP AND WATER AND YOU CAN USE IT TO ARRANGE IN TO. FLORISTS USE IT ALL THE TIME. YOU CAN BUY IT IN MICHAEL'S BY THE BLOCK. UM, AND... AND THE ONE THING YOU CAN TO... YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE IS DON'T LET IT DRY OUT. A LOT OF TIMES PEOPLE SAVE THE ARRANGEMENTS AND FOAM THINKING THEY CAN REUSE IT. BUT THAT'S NOT TRUE. YOU CAN ONLY USE IT THE ONE TIME.

Mary says WHAT DID YOU DO AS FAR AS THESE FRUITS...

Amber says ALL I DID IS JUST PUT A PICK ON. PUT IT UP THROUGH THERE. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THESE PICKS, EVEN JUST LITTLE TWIGS FROM YOUR YARD WILL WORK. POKE IT UP IN AND... AND, UM, AND PUT IT IN... JUST SLIDES DOWN IN LIKE THAT.

Mary says NOW, HOW LONG WILL IT LOOK LIKE THIS? BECAUSE THESE ARE FRESH FRUITS.

Amber says THEY ARE. IT WILL LOOK GOOD I WOULD SAY FOR ABOUT A WEEK.

Mary says MMM.

Amber says JUST ABOUT AS LONG AS, YOU KNOW, YOUR FRUIT WOULD LAST IN A FRUIT BOWL. UM, YOU CAN ALSO PRE-PLACE THESE. LIKE, SAY YOU HAD A PARTY NEXT WEEK AND YOU DID THIS BUT THEN YOU WANTED IT ALSO FOR CHRISTMAS. SO YOU JUST KEEP THIS MOIST. KEEP IT WET IN YOUR CONTAINER. AND THIS WILL STAY QUITE NICELY. AND IN YOUR HOME. IF IT'S VERY, VERY WARM, TRY PUTTING IT OUT IN YOUR GARAGE AT NIGHT. IT WILL HELP KEEP IT LONGER BECAUSE IF IT STAYS COOL IT, WON'T DRY OUT AS FAST AND YOU CAN REPLACE THE FRUITS.

Mary says THAT IS...

Amber says YOU CAN PUT NUTS IN IT AND ALL SORTS OF THINGS.

Mary says UH-HUH.

Amber says IT'S VERY COLONIAL AND VERY NATURAL. BUT IT ALSO WILL GO WITH JUST ABOUT ANYTHING... ANY DECOR AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

Mary says YEAH, AND I CAN SEE THIS. IF YOU'RE HAVING A BIG PARTY, YOU KNOW, MANY PEOPLE MIGHT HAVE A BUFFET OR SOMETHING. IT WOULD MAKE A LOVELY CENTERPIECE.

Amber says IT WOULD. AND YOU CAN EXPAND THIS. MAKE IT BIGGER OR SMALLER. THESE ARE FUN THAT GO WITH IT.

Mary says OH, YEAH, YOU STUCK THE CLOVES IN THERE.

Amber says YES.

Mary says AND YOU HOLLOWED THE WHOLE THING OUT.

Amber says JUST HOLLOWED IT OUT JUST FOR THE FACE OF THESE LIGHTS. YOU JUST TRACE IT WITH A KNIFE AND HOLLOW IT OUT AND THERE YOU GO.

Mary says JUST LEFT THE REST OF THE ORANGE INSIDE.

Amber says YEP.

Mary says LET'S TAKE ANOTHER CALL HERE. WE'VE GOT JANET ON THE LINE. HI.

The Caller says HI.

Mary says HI, GO AHEAD.

The Caller says OKAY, UM, I HAVE FIVE CHILDREN AND, UM, AND I GOT THE IDEA TO MAKE THEM PASS THE TIME, I... I MADE POPCORN AND... AND I TOOK A THICK NEEDLE AND I SAT THERE, UM, TO WATCH THEM IN THE KITCHEN AND THEY... THEY MADE, UM, WHAT YOU CALL A GARLAND. WE MADE IT LONG ENOUGH SO IT'S A THICK GARLAND ALL AROUND THE TREE. THEN AFTER THAT, I TOOK MY CAN OPENER AND I HAD CUT OUT THE TOPS AND BOTTOM OF THE CANS, WASHED AND DRIED THEM, THEN I PUT SOME POJ GLUE ON THE INSIDE AND PUT A RIBBON THAT WOULD FIT ON THE INSIDE OF THE... OF THE... FROM RIM TO RIM AND THE SAME THING ON THE OUTSIDE. THEN I PUT A LITTLE PODGE GLUE ON THE BOTTOM AND I PUT A LITTLE SANTA CLAUS THAT I BOUGHT AT THE STORE, REAL CHEAP. OR YOU CAN PUT ANYTHING YOU WANT. AND IF YOU LIKE, SOMETIMES I PUT A PIECE OF LACE ON THE OUTSIDE.

Mary says OHH.

The Caller says AND I HANG THAT UP ON THE CHRISTMAS TREE.

Mary says OH, THAT'S FUN.

The Caller says FOR CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS.

Mary says VERY SMART. YOU KNOW, I ACTUALLY YOU... GLAD YOU MENTION ABOUT THE POPCORN. I REMEMBER WE USED TO DO THAT AS KIDS. I HAVEN'T MUCH ABOUT THAT LATELY. DO KIDS STILL DO THAT?

Amber says IT WAS A FEATURE IN THE LATEST MARTHA STEWART CHRISTMAS MAGAZINE, ACTUALLY.

Mary says YEAH, YEAH, AND I... AND I EVEN REMEMBER PEOPLE DYING THE... DYING THE POPCORN AND MAKING IT DIFFERENT COLOURS. MAKE IT GOLD.

Amber says ADD CRANBERRIES OR GOLDEN RAISINS OR PIECES OF DRY FRUIT TO GIVE YOU VARIANCE IN COLOUR AND THAT'S ALSO VERY FUNED TO DO.

Mary says OKAY. HOW WHAT ABOUT CHRISTMAS WREATHS? BECAUSE THAT'S SO POPULAR AT THIS TIME OF YEAR. YOU CAN'T GO BY A DOORWAY WITHOUT SEEING ONE.

Amber says IT'S A WELCOMING SIGN FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

Mary says YEAH.

Amber says I LOVE, UM, I LOVE ANY TYPES OF WREATHS. I THINK THAT, UM, THAT... THAT ESPECIALLY THE EVERGREEN ONES THAT ARE OUT THIS TIME OF YEAR. UM, THERE'S A... THERE'S LOTS OF DIFFERENT THINGS THAT YOU CAN USE TO DECORATE THEM BESIDES JUST YOUR TRADITIONAL RED OR GREEN, HOLLY WOULD KIND OF... WE KIND OF THINK, YOU KNOW, TO STAY WITHIN THAT BOX. LIKE THIS ONE HERE, UM, WE JUST PUT SOME OF THESE SMALL PEARS LIKE WE USED IN THIS ARRANGEMENT HERE AND SOME EUCALYPTUS THAT WILL DRY NICELY. WE USE GLITTER GOLD. THAT'S ANOTHER THING THAT YOU CAN GET IN THE CRAFT STORE. IT'S A SPRAY, LIKE AN AEROSOL SPRAY CAN. YOU CAN SPRAY IT ON ANY OF YOUR GREENS AND PACKAGES AND IT JUST GIVES THAT HOLIDAY SPARKLE.

Mary says JUST LIFT IT IS A LITTLE, DOESN'T IT?

Amber says YEAH.

Mary says AND YOU HAVE HOW MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF GREENERY IN THERE?

Amber says THREE.

Mary says THREE DIFFERENT KINDS OF GREENERY.

Amber says YEAH.

Mary says AND PEARS.

Amber says SO EVEN IF YOU BUY JUST A NOBLE FUR OR JUST A GENERAL WREATH THAT'S JUST ONE KIND, YOU CAN ALWAYS ADD IN OTHER THINGS. TIE IN SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE ORNAMENTS. UM, AND... AND PUT IN SOME LIKE NUTS AND DIFFERENT THINGS THAT YOU CAN... THAT YOU CAN THINK OF.

Mary says YEAH.

Amber says AND JUST TO MAKE IT CREATIVE AND MAKE IT YOUR OWN.

Mary says NOW, UM, NOW WE MENTIONED EARLIER THAT, UM, THAT YOU ARE ALSO A CONTRIBUTOR TO, UM, TO... TO A MAGAZINE.

Amber says YES.

A colour picture shows a light blue door with a green wreath hanging from it.

Mary says SO, UM, WE'RE GOING TO TAKE A LOOK AT NOW AT SOME OF THE WREATHS THAT ARE PICTURED IN THE MAGAZINE. DESCRIBE THIS ONE FOR ME.

Amber says THIS IS THE SAME TYPE OF WREATH THAT WE HAVE HANGING ON THE WALL NOW IN THE STUDIO. IT IS PINE FROM HERE. AND IN ONTARIO. AND IT JUST HAS SOME DRIED HYDRANGEAS TUCKED IN HERE AND THERE. THE HYDRANGEAS ARE SPRAYED WITH SPARKLE.

Mary says THAT'S IT?

Amber says YEAH, THAT'S IT.

Mary says HOW ABOUT DURABLE. IF IT'S HANGING OUTSIDE.

Amber says IT WOULD DO JUST FINE T LASTS YOU THROUGH CHRISTMAS.

Mary says OH, OKAY. ALL RIGHT. LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT ANOTHER ONE.

A picture shows a wreath made of dry branches and pine tree twigs.

Amber says THIS ONE IS A FUN WREATH. IT'S JUST WITH A FIR WREATH... AND IT ALSO JUST HAS SOME BRANCHES AND BERRIES LOOSELY TWINED AROUND. JUST VERY CASUAL. DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT. JUST... JUST TIE IT UP TOGETHER AND HANG IT ON, YOU KNOW, A FENCE POST AND AN ENTRANCE WAY AND... AND IT WILL BE BEAUTIFUL.

Mary says HMM. ALL RIGHT. HERE'S ANOTHER ONE.

Amber says THIS IS FUN. THIS IS FROM THE KITCHEN. THIS IS... THIS HAS ALL SORTS OF, UM, OF VINTAGE, UM, KITCHEN UTENSILS. THAT ARE TIED IN IT WITH...

Mary says BOY, YOU CAN PUT ANYTHING ON A WREATH, CAN'T YOU?

Amber says YES.

Mary says HERE'S A PLUMBING ONE WITH ALL KINDS OF BATHROOM THINGS IN IT.

A picture shows a wreath made of pine tree branches and tin objects.
Then another picture shows a pine tree wreath with branches and acorns.

Amber says AND THIS ONE, LIKE WE TALKED ABOUT THE NUTS EARLIER. THIS IS JUST A WHOLE SELECTION OF NUTS THAT COME FROM THE GROCERY STORE AND, UM, AND THE BOW AT THE STOP IS... TOP IS SOME BIG CINNAMON PIECE THAT IS ARE TIED TOGETHER AT THE TOP.

Mary says GREAT. OKAY, LET'S TAKE ANOTHER CALL HERE. WE HAVE PAM ON THE LINE FROM KINGSTON. HI, PAM.

The Caller says HI, HOW ARE YOU?

Mary says FINE, THANKS.

The Caller says ENJOY YOUR SHOW. LOTS OF GOOD IDEAS.

Mary says YEAH, LOTS. DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO SHARE WITH US?

The Caller says YEAH, I JUST WANTED TO ASK A QUESTION ABOUT THE TIN CANS, UM, CANISTERS YOU WOULD USE AND ALSO THE TIN CAN ORNAMENTS. THE LIDS. I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT YOU WOULD PUT AROUND, UM, AROUND THE LIDS AND THE TOP OF THE CAN SO THAT YOU DON'T CUT YOURSELF? THESE ARE CANS THAT... THAT I USE THAT, UM, THAT YOU CAN GET A SPECIAL CAN OPENER THAT... THAT DOESN'T LEAVE A SHARP EDGE ON IT.

Mary says A SPECIAL CAN OPENER. WHERE WOULD YOU BUY THAT?

Amber says I KNOW PAMPERED CHEF SELLS THEM AND PROBABLY ANY SPECIALTY STORE. THERE'S ALSO LOTS OF OTHER CANS THAT YOU CAN USE THAT HAVE A LID ON THEM, A PLASTIC LID, UM, YOU KNOW, ICE TEA, COCOA, THAT'S A FEW THAT I CAN THINK OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD THAT HAVE A SHARP EDGE. ANY JUICE CANS, THEY HAVE THE PULL TAB. AND THEY JUST PULL OFF. NO SHARP EDGES.

Mary says THOSE TEND TO BE CARD WOODS.

Amber says THE CANS ARE CARDBOARD, BUT THE LIDS...

Mary says YES, CERTAINLY.

Amber says THOSE LIDS, THERE'S NO SHARP EDGES ON THOSE AT ALL. AND ONE OTHER TRICK I KNOW, IF YOU WANT TO USE THOSE CANS FOR, UM, FOR, LIKE TO... LIKE TO CONTAIN SOME OF A PLAN, LIKE A MINI POINSETTIA, THE BASE OF IT YOU CAN PAINT IT WITH, WITH FINGERNAIL POLISH AND KEEPS IT FROM RUSTING AND LEAVING A LITTLE RING ON YOUR WINDOWSILL.

Mary says OH, VERY SMART.

Amber says A LITTLE TIP TO PASS ALONG.

Mary says OKAY, LET'S TAKE ANOTHER CALL. WE HAVE JULIE ON THE LINE FROM NIAGARA FALLS. HI, JULIE.

The Caller says HI.
HOW ARE YOU?

Mary says I'M FINE THANKS.

The Caller says I HAVE QUESTION. I HAVE A BUMP OF OWNER AMS THAT I GOT, YOU CAN BUY THEM BY THE PIECE AT WHITE ROSE OR WHATEVER AND I WONDER HOW TO GET KIDS TO DECORATE THEM. IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO DECORATE THE CLEAR GLASS OR WHITE FROSTED ORNAMENTS LIKE BALLS.

Amber says YOU CAN PAINT THEM. YOU COULD USE...
THAT ACRYLIC PAINT. YOU CAN GET THAT AT WHITE ROSE FOR SURE. USING THOSE GLITTER GLUE PENS. THOSE ARE FUN. CRAYOLA MAKES THEM AND THEY'RE LIKE A LITTLE PEN AND YOU CAN JUST DRAW ON IT AND HAVE THE KIDS WRITE WORDS, LIKE PEACE OR LOVE, HOPE, JOY. UM, AND...

Mary says KIDS LOVE THAT.

Amber says THEY WOULD LOVE THAT. MAKE IT FUN, YOU KNOW? DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT. DO POLKA DOTS ON IT. SPRAY SNOW ON THEM. THE SPRAY SNOW ON THE ORNAMENT AND MAYBE A LITTLE BIT OF GLITTER SPRAY ON IT. MAKE IT SPARKILY. MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A SNOWBALL.

Mary says PLUS, TOO, THEY HAVE TEXTURE.

Amber says THOSE GLITTER YEAH, THEY'RE A LOT OF FUN.

Mary says NOW, I WANT TO GO ON HERE TO CANDLES BECAUSE YOU HAVE SOME GREAT IDEAS HERE WITH THESE CANDLES. LET'S MOVE THAT OVER THERE.

Amber places two wine glasses with gel and red candles on the table and says THESE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT YOU COULD DO, UM, WITH... WITH, UM, WITH CANDLES. THESE... THESE HERE WOULD MAKE A VERY FUN, UM, HOLIDAY CENTERPIECE NOT NEW YEAR.

Mary says YEAH.

Amber says DO SOMETHING FUN...

Mary says THIS IS JUST A FINE GLASS, ISN'T IT?

Amber says YES. THESE ARE JUST GARAGE SALE FINDS. JUST YOUR ODDS AND ENDS WINE GLASSES. YOU COULD USE ANY SIZE. PUT ANY TYPE OF HOLIDAY ORNAMENT INSIDE HERE. I JUST USED ONE OF THOSE BEADED STRINGS THAT YOU CAN GET ABOUT ANYWHERE. TIE A RIBBON ON. THIS ONE IS FLOATING AND THIS ONE STAYS ON TOP. YOU CAN DO A WHOLE SELECTION. TALL THINGS OR A BIG GLASS BOWL FULL OF SPARKLY ORNAMENTS AND THAT...

Mary says I THOUGHT MAYBE DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING HERE...

Amber says YOU COULD. YOU COULD.

Mary says YOU COULD PUT SOMETHING IF YOU WANTED.

Amber says BEADS ARE TAPED ON.

Mary says THAT'S VERY SMART. GREAT CANDLE HOLDERS. AND WHAT ABOUT THOSE BIG ONES THERE.
THESE ARE WONDERFUL.

Amber places a glass container with a large white candle inside and says HERE WE GO. THESE ARE JUST THE REGULAR HURRICANE COVERS THAT YOU CAN GET ABOUT ANYWHERE. PAINT HIM. I PAINTED SOME STARS AND SWIRLS AND HOLLY THERE. AND MAKE IT FUN. IT ALL WASHES OFF SO IF YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING ELSE IN A DIFFERENT COLOURED THEME LATER ON DOWN THE ROAD, YOU COULD DO THAT. IT JUST PERSSONIZES YOUR OCCASION EYE LIKE WHAT YOU DID HERE WITH THE PAINT. IT'S VERY FUN.

Mary says I LIKE WHAT YOU DID HERE WITH THE PAINT MUCH IT'S VERY FUN. NOW TO DONNA.

The Caller says MARY, I LOVE YOUR SHOW. AND AMBER, GOOD IDEAS. I'M A HOME CARE CHILD CARE PROVIDEER AND I FIND THAT A LOT OF PARENTS THAT I HAVE AND FRIEND OF MINE... FRIENDS OF... FRIENDS OF MINE THAT WORK OUTSIDE THE HOME THEY LIKE THE HOME BAKED GOODS. SO THAT'S WHAT I GIVE AS A GIFT. BUT I USUALLY PUT IT IN THE TINS THAT YOU PURCHASE OR A PLASTIC CONTAINER BUT NOW I CAN'T WAIT TO DECORATE SOME BOX WAS RECYCLED PAPERS AND CARDS AND RIBBONS AND TIE IN CRAFTS FOR HOME MADE BAKEING WITH PEOPLE. SO YAY.

Amber says GLAD YOU GAVE... WE GAVE YOU SOME IDEAS. HOME MADE BAKEING IS A BIG ONE. I LIKE TO DO IT TOO AND GIVE OUT TINS OF THINGS.

Mary says YEAH.

Amber says THIS IS ANOTHER... ANOTHER ALONG THE SAME LINE. I GOT THIS ONE LAST YEAR AND FOUND IT WONDERFUL. IT'S HOME BAKING BUT THE RECIPE'S ALL PUT TOGETHER FOR YOU. ADD AN EGG AND BUTTER AND... AND THERE YOU GO. PUT IT IN THE OFTEN FOR...

Mary says YOU KNOW WHAT?

Amber says HALF AN HOUR.

Mary says THAT IS SO... I JUST GOT ONE OF THOSE THIS YEAR. IS THIS... HAS THIS BEEN A TREND FOR A WHILE?

Amber says YES.

Mary says IT FIGURES. I'VE JUST BEEN OUT OF IT AND I GOT ONE AND IT WAS A CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE RECIPE. AGAIN, ALL IN A CONTAINER AND I HAD TO ADD SOME BUTTER AND AN AGRICULTURE AND A FEW THINGS AND I THOUGHT THIS IS VERY SMART.

Amber says IT IS VERY SMART.

Mary says YEAH.

Amber says AND IT... IT PROVIDES YOU WITH HOME BAKING WITHOUT ALL THE FUSS AND THE MESS AND WHATEVER. UM, AND... AND, UM, AND IT ALSO SAVES ON TIME. AND... AND WHICH WE'RE ALL SHORT OF, ESPECIALLY RIGHT NOW. SO YOU'RE DOING YOUR FRIENDS A FAVOUR AS WELL AS PROVIDING THEM WITH A WONDERFUL, CREATIVE GIFT.

Mary says SO I WOULD IMAGINE... LIKE, IF YOU WERE GOING TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS, JUST TO MAKE IT WORTH YOUR WHILE, RIGHT? YOU WOULD DO IT IN BULK AND BE IN SEVERAL CONTAINERS.

Amber says RIGHT.

Mary says AS FAR AS... DO YOU DO A LOT OF BAKING?

Amber says I DO. I DO. I LOVE BAKING.

Mary says CERTAIN RECIPES WOULD BE MORE AMENIABLE TO THIS, RIGHT?

Amber says COOKIE RECIPE. AND ATTACH A COOKIE CUTTER OR SOMETHING ELSE TO TIE IN WITH THE GIFT. ALSO IT'S A FUN LEARNING THING. LIKE IF YOU HAVE A COUPLE OF CHILDREN THAT ARE LEARNING ABOUT FRACTIONS AND MEASURING, LINE THEM UP AND SAY, YOU KNOW, I NEED ONE CUP OF THIS AND THEY CAN HELP YOU WITH IT. YOU DO ONE CUP OF FLOUR IN SIX CONTAINERS AND DO THE NEXT AND THE NEXT AND THEY CAN ALSO BE INVOLVED IN CREATING A GIFT LIKE THIS AS WELL.

Mary says WELL, UM, JUST IN CASE, IF YOU TUNED IN, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT, UM, HOLIDAY GIFT GIVING, IDEAS FOR CRAFTS, MAYBE YOU HAVE A PET CRAFT THAT... THAT YOU HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT, OR YOU'RE INTERESTED IN, UM, IN EXPLORING SOME NEW ONES, IDEAS ON GIFT WRAPPING, CENTERPIECES, ANYTHING AT ALL. OR TIPS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE. GIVE US A CALL. THE NUMBER TO DIAL IS...

The phone numbers reappear briefly.

Mary continues AND DO WE HAVE ANOTHER CALLER ON THE LINE? NO. OH, OKAY. WE'LL HOLD OFF ON THAT. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR HOME AT CHRISTMAS? UM, IS IT SOMETHING, YOU KNOW, YOU DO ALL OF THE COOKING AND ALL THE BAKING? OR DO YOU SPEND IT AT HOME WITH, YOU KNOW...

Amber says WE USUALLY SPEND IT WITH FAMILY. UM, I ACTUALLY LIVE THOUSANDS OF FAMILIES AWAY FROM MY FAMILY AND I REMEMBER EVER SINCE I WAS LITTLE, MY PARENTS MADE, UM, MADE THE HOLIDAYS MAGICAL FOR US. AND THAT... THAT... JUST HAD TO DO WITH THE SIMPLE THINGS. YOU KNOW, LIKE DECORATING THE TREE. WE ALL HAD A... WERE ABLE TO HELP DO THAT. UM, I THINK THAT REALLY INSTILLS TRADITION, YOU KNOW, AND HELPS KIDS REALIZE, YOU KNOW, HEY, I CAN BE CREATIVE AND MAKE THIS AND THAT. IT HELPS ADD TO THE SPIRIT OF THE HOLIDAYS.

Mary says I HEARD THE OTHER DAY IN THE UNITED STATES, BECAUSE OF ALL THE EVENTS THAT HE'S HAPPENED, HE NOTICED THAT, UM, THAT BOARD GAMES, FAMILY CENTRED ACTIVITIES WERE DOING SO WELL. AND THESE PEOPLE WANTED TO COME IN AND DO THINGS AS A FAMILY AND NOT INDIVIDUALLY. AND THE INDIVIDUAL TOYS, IN FACT, WERE NOT SELLING AS WELL AS THE OTHER KINDS.

Amber says I THINK THAT DID... THAT THE TIME... THAT THAT EVENT HAS EFFECTED EVERYTHING AND VERY MAJORLY EFFECTED THIS HOLIDAY SEASON I THINK SHALL... I THINK ESPECIALLY.

Mary says WE HAVE ANOTHER CALLER. HELLO, HEATHER.

The Caller says HOW YOU DOING?

Mary says I'M FINE THANKS.

The Caller says YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT DIFFERENT THEME. ONE YEAR WE DID POPCORN AND MADE COOKIES AND PUT CANDY CANES ON THE TREE. EVERY TIME A KID CAME, THEY COULD TAKE A COOKIE AND A CANDY CAME HOME WITH THEM. IT WOULD BE A MEMORY FOR THEM AND IT WAS A NICE TREAT FOR THEM AS THEY CAME INTO THE HOUSE.

Mary says VERY NICE... I GUESS YOUR TREE WAS BARE BY THE TIME...

The Caller says YEAH. YEAH. DON'T TRY AND KEEP THE ANIMALS AWAY FROM THE COOKIES. BUT I THOUGHT I WOULD MENTION IT TO YOU. THAT'S NICE FOR THE KIDS.

Mary says THAT IS SMART. BECAUSE AT CHRISTMAS, WE ALWAYS HAVE CANDY CANES BUT I KEEP THEM IN A BIG BASKET AND THE KIDS COME IN. BUT HAVING THEM ON A TREE IS A NICE IDEA, TOO. GIVING THEM AWAY.
LET'S GET IN ANOTHER CALL. LISA ON THE LINE.

The Caller says HI. UM, I HAVE A QUESTION AND... AND A COMMENT FOR THE LADY WHO WAS LOOKING FOR, UM, FOR THE CAN OPENER THING.

Mary says OH, YES.

The Caller says IF YOU GET THE STAR FRIT ONE THAT, OPENS IT UP... IT UP WITHOUT ANY SHARP EDGES AND TAKES IT RIGHT OFF THE TOP.

Mary says STARFRIT, OKAY.

The Caller says AND THE WREATH THAT YOU SHOWED FOR OUTSIDE WITH THE CINNAMON AND THE NUTS OBJECT IT, IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU HAVE TO PUT ON IT TO KEEP THE ANIMALS... NUTS ON IT, IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU HAVE TO PUT ON IT TO KEEP THE ANIMALS AWAY. BECAUSE I PUT SOMETHING OUT LIKE THAT BEFORE AND THE SQUIRRELS CAME AND ATE IT. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU CAN DO WITH THAT.

Amber says I DON'T KNOW OF ANYTHING.

Mary says ANYTHING ON IT... I'M... THE ONLY THING AND I'M CERTAINLY NOT AN EXPERT BUT I HAD A GARDENER IN AND HE SAID PUT BLOOD MEAL ON YOUR, UM, ON YOUR BULBS, YOU KNOW, SO THAT THEY'LL STAY AWAY... STAY AWAY. I WONDER IF YOU COULD PUT SOMETHING LIKE THAT ON IT? DOES THAT SOUND TOTALLY preposterous TO YOU, LISA? I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT... I REALLY, I DON'T KNOW. I, UM, I...

Amber says I DON'T KNOW. I WOULD CALL A NURSERY OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT AND SEE IF THEY KNOW OF SOMETHING. BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT SOMETHING THAT'S GOING TO BE HARMFUL, YOU KNOW, IF A CHILD WERE TO GET INTO IT.

Mary says BUT YOU HEARD ABOUT THAT, ABOUT THE BLOOD MEAL ON BULBS, RIGHT?

Amber says I HAVE HEARD OF THAT.

Mary says TO KEEP THE SQUIRRELS AWAY.

Amber says I HAVE HEARD OF THAT.

Mary says WE HAVE ANOTHER CALLER, IS IT?
LIZ. OKAY, HI, LIZ. YOU THERE, LIZ. NO. ALL RIGHT. UM, OKAY. LET'S TRY VIRGINIA IN CAMBRIDGE. HI, VIRGINIA. NO, EVERYONE IS JUST OVERWHELMED BY THE SUGGESTIONS. I CAN'T GET OVER THE GIFT CARDS. THAT'S A GREAT, GREATED IDEA. DO YOU HAVE LITTLE KIDS IN YOUR FAMILY?

Amber says I HAVE LOTS OF CHIRP IN MY FAMILY. I'M THE OLDEST OF 12. SO WE GREW IN UP A HUGE FAMILY, HUGE CHRISTMASS AND... AND WE... IT'S ALL GOOD. LOTS OF CRAFTS.

Mary says AND EVERYBODY GOT INVOLVED?

Amber says YES.
FOR SURE.

Mary says THAT'S GREAT. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I'M SURE YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE A LOVELY, LOVELY CHRISTMAS. AND CERTAINLY HELP MAKE OURS LOVELY WITH LOTS OF THESE IDEAS. THANK YOU SOLVE FOR COMING IN.

Amber says THANK YOU.

Mary says AMBER TIEDE IS THE OWNER OF A AND E DESIGN IN ROSE MARK ONTARIO AND IS A CONTRIBUTOR TO A MAGAZINE CALLED "CENTURY HOME" MAGAZINE.

A copy of the Century Home magazine sits on a table.

Mary continues YOU CAN LOOK FOR THE ARTICLES THERE. SHE CAN ALSO BE REACHED AT...

A slate reads "A and E design. 705-434-9933, aedesign@look.ca."

Mary says OKAY. MARK FISHER KNOWS ALL ABOUT DESIGN. FROM CHAMPION GLASSES TO SWORDS. FROM SHRUBS TO FOOT STOOLS, AS PROPERTY MASTER FOR 25 YEARS, HE'S FOUND IT ALL TO SET THE STAGE AT THE STRATFORD FESTIVAL. LET'S TAKE A LOOK.

A clip plays on screen in which a man steps out a door labeled "Stage door" and says COME ON IN. COME ON IN.

A male voice says OVER THE YEARS, DID OVER 100 SHOWS WE DID AT THE AVALON SINCE I STARTED HERE IN '76.

In a snippet of a play, a male actor in his fifties says WHAT EXACTLY WERE YOU REMEMBERING AT THAT MOMENT?

The man who opened the door stands in a dimly lit room.

A caption appears on screen. It reads "Mark Fisher. Stratford Festival."

Mark says ME, I'M RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SURE THE PROPS ARE THERE. NEED IT FOR THE SHOW ON STAGE. WHETHER IT'S HOT COFFEE OR COLOURED WATER OR THE TEASPOON ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE CUP WHEN THEY GO TO PICK IT UP SO THE ACTOR DOESN'T HAVE HAVE TO LOOK. AND BETWEEN SHOWS IT'S GET RID OF ALL OF THAT AND GET THE NEXT ONE IN.

As he steps into a room and pushes a table, he says WE MORE OR LESS HAVE EVERYTHING PICKED UP BACK STAGE SO WE'LL TAKE THIS. THIS IS THE PROP... WE HAVE ROLLING PROP TABLES FOR EVERY SHOW. WHICH MAKES IT QUICKER AND EASIER BECAUSE THAT'S PART OF THE MAIN THING WITH, UM, WITH DOING THE SHOWS HERE IS TO DO THE CHANGE OVER AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE FROM ONE SHOW TO THE OTHER. THE FASTER PROPS CAN BE SORT OF HALF SETUP AHEAD OF TIME THE BETTER. AND I THINK GOING TO UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO, I WAS IN THE MASTER COMPUTER SCIENCE PROGRAM. AND, UM, AND... AND JUST AS TIME WENT ON, AFTER WORKING WITH IBM AND STUFF, I THOUGHT THIS IS NOT THE FIELD THAT I WANT TO BE IN. SO I SWITCHED INTO THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT PROGRAM AND... AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO AND THE HUMANS THEATER, WHICH WAS QUITE KNEW AT THAT POINT, THINKING AT THAT TIME THAT I WANTED TO BE AN TACK FOR... ACTOR BUT SOON REALIZED THAT NO, I PREFERRED BACK STAGE LIFE.

As he steps into a large empty room he says THIS IS THE REHEARSAL HALL. THERE IS MIRRORS BEHIND THE DRAPES. FOR DANCE OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.

As he picks up a life-sized doll he says THESE ARE THE BODIES THAT HAVE TO BE SORTED OUT FOR HENRY. WE TRY AND CONDENSE DOWN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE SO IT'S FEWER TRIP IN THE ELEVATOR AND, UM, AND... AND AS WE'RE... AND WE'RE CRAMPED ENOUGH FOR SPACE BACK STAGE. I REMEMBER PUTTING ON THE SKITS FOR NEIGHBOURHOOD KIDS AND STUFF. SO IT'S SOMETHING THAT'S ALWAYS BEEN A PART OF MY LIFE. AND BEING BACK STAGE, I COULD GET VIRTUALLY, UM, AS CLOSE AS I AM TO YOU RIGHT NOW FROM THE ACTORS, SOMETIMES. AND... AND, UM, AND... AND I JUST SIT THERE WATCHING AND SOMETIMES I HAD TO BE TOLD TO MOVE OUT OF THE WAY. UM, BECAUSE... SO THAT THEY COULD GET ON OR OFF.

He ties a string and says JUST SO THEY DON'T FALL OFF ON THE WAY. SECURE THEM IN. YOU HAVE THE BOY OVER HERE STILL, TOO WHEN I... WHEN I GO TO WATCH OTHER THEATER, I TEND TO WATCH TECHNICAL ELEMENTS MORE SO AND HARD TO SIT BACK AND RELAX AND ENJOY IT.

Standing on the stage he says IT'S OPEN IN THIS SHOW AND THING IN THE PIT THAT HAS TO BE DONE AND I COULD GO HELP THEM A BIT RIGHT NOW. SO... LIVE TV... AND UP TAKE, OF COURSE, IS WHERE THE HENRY SET HAS BEEN STORED. AND THERE'S MORE OF THIS TO COME OUT. WE HAVE TO TUCK PRIVATE LIVES ALL OVER THIS WAY SO THAT WE CAN PUT EVERYTHING IN. SOME SHOWS ARE NONSTOP FROM THE BEGINNING RIGHT THROUGH TO THE END. AND OTHER SHOWS, ALL ACTION'S ON STAGE AND THERE SIN MUCH TODAY... TO DO. YOU GET TO KNOW THE ARTIST BECAUSE WE ALL WORK TOGETHER. IT'S NO DIFFERENT THAN, YOU KNOW, ANY OTHER CO-WORKER.

As a black and white picture of a man in his seventies appears, he says AND AL AND I, YOU KNOW, UM, SORT OF GOT TO KNOW EACH OTHER AND AFTER A SHOW, HE LIKED HIS CIGARS AND EARLY REHEARSAL PERIODS I MADE SURE I HAD A FEW EXTRA ON STAND-BY FOR HIM BECAUSE I FOUND OUT FROM THE LOCAL STORE WHAT KIND OF CIGAR DO YOU LIKE AND HE WOULD COME OFF AND SAY "DO YOU HAVE ONE, MARK?" AND I WOULD SAY YES, I DO. AND WOULD HELP HIM OUT THAT WAY. AND IN THIS SHOW, WE NEED ALL THE EXTRA... WE USE EVERY AVAILABLE SPACE THAT WE CAN FIND. AND IT HAS TO BE SETUP ALL OVER THE PLACE. ALL RIGHT. WE'LL GO TO THE PROP KITCHEN AND MIX-UP LIQUIDS FOR VIRGINIA WOLF WOLFE AND STUFF.

As fast clips show him walking in and out of different rooms and pouring water into a jug, he says OVER THE YEARS, WE'VE TRIED DIFFERENT THINGS TO MAKE COLOURED RYE AND SCOTCH AND BRANDY. WE'VE TRIED FOOD COLOURING AND, UM, AND WE'VE TRIED TEA. UM, AND... AND COFFEE JUST DOESN'T TASTE... YOU WANT SOMETHING THAT THE ACTORS DON'T MIND THE TASTE OF. GINGER ALE AND, OF COURSE, CHAMPION... CHAMPAGNE. THERE'S NO PROBLEM. BUT THERE'S THIS STUFF CALLED THE GRAVY COLOUR THAT WE DISCOVERED. A DROP OR TWO OF THAT MAKES QUITE A DIFFERENCE IN THAT BROWNNESS THAT YOU CAN'T NORMALLY GET WITH FOOD COLORING.

A snippet of a play rolls in which a female actor says PARTY. PARTY.

A man says I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS, MARTHA.

The woman says GO ANSWER THE DOOR.

The man says CAN'T...

A male voice says EVER HAVE AN ACTOR ASK FOR A REAL DRINK?

Mark says WE'VE DONE IT SOMETIMES FOR THE FINAL SHOW. SOMETIMES THE ACTOR'S KNOWN IT. BUT SOMETIMES ON... YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO, OF COURSE. AND THERE'S BEEN THE ODD PHOTO CALL AND WE'RE DOING ALL OF THESE SHOTS LATER AT NIGHT, AND, UM, AND THEN IF... THEY FIGURE IT'S OKAY TO HAVE THE ODD REAL DRINK. BUT USUALLY NOT BECAUSE... BECAUSE IT'S JUST TOO RISKY IN THE LONG RUN. AH... THE FINAL SHOW OF THE IMPORTANCE... OF "THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ERNEST" MANY YEARS AGO WE PUT REAL BRANDY IN. THEY LIKED THAT.

As he holds a tray of ice under a faucet, he says UNFORTUNATELY, THE ONLY WAY TO LOOSEN THESE UP IS TO USE HOT WATER SO THAT THEY'LL, UM, SO THAT THEY'LL POP OUT EVENTUALLY. TO THE SELL VARIETY AGAIN. AND I'LL ROLL MY GURNEY ALONG.

Rock music plays.

Mark pushes a gurney into an elevator.

As he shows different bottles he says OF COURSE, WE HAVE REAL LOIR BOTTLES AND BECAUSE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE THE MID-'06'S, WE HAVE TO GET RID OF THE BAR CODE ON THE BACK OF THE BOTTLES. BECAUSE THAT DOESN'T READ. SO, UM, SO THE... WE'VE JUST COVERED THEM OVER, THE BAR CODES. BECAUSE SOME OF THOSE AUDIENCE PEOPLE WITH THEIR BINOCULARS, THEY'LL SEE EVERYTHING. AND... AND STRATFORD TRIES TO BE QUITE A STICKLEER ABOUT DETAILS BOTH WITH COSTUME AND OTHER THINGS. THE BRANDY... SOME OF THE BOTTLES ARE FULL AND SOME NEED TO BE OF A SPECIFIC HEIGHT SO THERE'S A LITTLE TINY DO... DOT SO I KNOW HOW FULL TO FILL THIS BOTTLE WITH THE BRANDY. BECAUSE WHEN THE ACTOR'S USING IT ON STAGE IT, MY HAVE... MIGHT HAVE TO BE EMPTIED BY A CERTAIN POINT. THEY POUR SO MANY DRINKS AND GO FROM THERE. SO THAT'S THE BRANDY.

Fast clips show him pouring brown liquids into bottles.

He says OF COURSE, JUST FOR YOU GUYS, I'LL HAVE A LITTLE TOAST TO MYSELF AND TO YOU.

He drinks and says IT'S ALL RIGHT. I PREFER THE REAL STUFF. NOW I HAVE TO TOP THAT UP AGAIN.

The clip ends.

Back in the studio, Mary picks up a colourful book and says THANKS, MARK. WELL, YOU SEE THIS BOOK. THIS IS THE BOOK THAT PARENTS AND CHILDREN ARE TALKING ABOUT. AND... AND IT'S ABOUT AS FAR AS YOU CAN GET FROM THE MAGICAL WORLD OF HARRY POTTER. THE BOOK IS CALLED "THE BREAD WINNER" AND BY A CANADIAN WRITER, DEBORAH ALICE. IT'S A GRIPPING STORY OF LIFE UNDER THE TALIBAN RULE IN AFGHANISTAN AND THE STORY IS TOLD THROUGH THE EYES OF AN 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL THERE. DEBORAH ALICE IS HERE TO TALK ABOUT IT.

Deborah is in her late thirties, with short, feathery brown hair. She's wearing a blue plaid shirt.

Mary says HI.

Deborah says HI.

Mary says CONGRATULATIONS ON THE INCREDIBLE SUCCESS OF THIS BOOK. FINAL I CALLED STORES HERE IN TORONTO. THEY WERE OUT OF THIS BOOK. UM, AND I RECENTLY HEARD THAT IT'S BECOME QUITE, UM, QUITE A PUBLISHING SENSATION ABROAD AS WELL. TELL US ABOUT IT.

A caption appears on screen. It reads "Deborah Ellis. 'The breadwinner.'"

Deborah says YES, IT'S... THEY PUBLISHED 30,000 COPIES IN ENGLAND AND JUST ABOUT ALL SOLD OUT WITHIN THE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS THAT THEY CAME OUT. SO IT'S IN DENMARK, FRANCE, GERMANY, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND. ALL OVER THE PLACE. JAPAN IS JUST BRINGING IT OUT SHORTLY.

Mary says YEAH, DID YOU HAVE ANY INCLINING, YOU KNOW, AT ALL INTERNATIONALLY IT WOULD CREATE A STIR LIKE THAT?

Deborah says NO, I'M JUST SURPRISED TO BE PUBLISHED AT ALL. UM, NO, I WROTE THE BOOK BECAUSE I... I WANTED TO GET THE STORY OUT. MAYBE RAISE A BIT OF MONEY, BECAUSE ALL THE ROYALTIES ARE GOING OVER TO THE REFUGEE CAMP INSIDE PAKISTAN AND TO PROJECT INSIDE AFGHANISTAN SO... SO BEYOND THAT, I HAD NO EXPECTATIONS FOR THE BOOK.

Mary says YOU KNOW, WHILE THERE'S A MISCONCEPTION THAT PEOPLE MIGHT HAVE. BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE AWARE OF THIS BOOK, POST SEPTEMBER 11TH. BUT, UM, BUT TELL US THE STORY. I MEAN THIS, BOOK IS ACTUALLY A YEAR OLD.

Deborah says IT'S BEEN OUT IN CANADA FOR A YEAR. I WROTE IT TWO YEARS AGO. I WAS IN PAKISTAN IN THE REFUGEE CAMPS FOR ABOUT THREE MONTHS INTERVIEWING WOMEN FOR AN ADULT BOOK THAT I WAS DOING. A NONFICTION BOOK CALLED "WOMEN OF THE AFGHAN WAR." AND WHILE THERE, I MET A WOMAN SMUGGLED OUT FOR A WOMAN'S DAY RALLY AND SHE SAID HER DAUGHTER WAS ABOUT, UM, 10 OR 11 YEARS OLD BACK IN KABUL HAD CUT OFF HER HAIR AND PUT ON BOYS' CLOTHING AND WAS MASQUERADING AS A BOY BECAUSE THERE'S NO MALE BREAD WINNER OF THE FAMILY AND AS SOON AS I HEARD THAT, I KNEW I WOULD WRITE IT UP AS A CHILDREN'S NOVEL.

Mary says YOU JUST KNEW IT RIGHT AWAY.

Deborah says YOU GET THOSE CLICKS IN YOUR HEAD AND SO...

Mary says HOW DID YOU TAKE THE FUNDAMENTALS THAT HAVE STORY AND THEN TURN IT INTO AN 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN THIS STORY?

Deborah says I TRIED TO... A CHILD'S WORLD IS QUITE SMALL BUT THE ADULT WORLD INTRUDES UPON THAT. SO I TRIED TO KEEP THAT IN MIND WHEN I WAS WRITING THE BOOK ABOUT... ABOUT WHAT WOULD SHE SEE? WHAT WOULD SHE FEEL ABOUT IT? WHAT WOULD SHE THINK ABOUT IT? AND I TRIED TO INCLUDE... TRIED TO MAKE HER A VERY NORMAL KID.

Mary says I'LL SAY. YOU KNOW WHAT STRUCK ME, TOO, THERE ARE... THERE'S HUMOUR IN THIS AS WELL.

Deborah says YES.

Mary says AND THE FACT THAT SHE, AND HER OLDER SISTER ARE... ARE CONSTANTLY BICKERING. YOU KNOW? AND I READ THAT AND I THOUGHT NOTHING CHANGES. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT COUNTRY YOU'RE IN, SIBLINGS WERE ALWAYS BIKE EAR AND IT'S MADE WORSE IN THAT SITUATION BECAUSE THEY CAN'T GET AWAY FROM EACH... BICKERING.

Deborah says AND IT'S MADE WORSE IN THAT SITUATION BECAUSE THEY CAN'T GET AWAY FROM EACH OTHER. AND THEY USED TO BE LIVE IN A BIG HOUSE AND NOW THE BOMBING IN KA... KABUL HAS MADE IT WORSE AND THE FAMILY IS STUCK IN THIS ROOM AND THEY CAN'T GET AWAY FROM EACH OTHER AND IT JUST MAKES IT WORSE.

Mary says NOW THIS GIRL IS SHOULDERED WITH THE HUGE RESPONSIBILITY OF TRANSFORMING HERSELF INTO A BOY SO SHE CAN GET OUT AND GET FOOD, BECAUSE OTHERWISE SHE'S GOT A MOTHER, RIGHT? TWO SISTERS. AND THE LITTLE BABY BROTHER. THE WOMEN CAN'T LEAVE.

Deborah says THEY CAN'T LEAVE, THAT'S RIGHT.

Mary says YEAH.

Deborah says SO IT IS... IT COMES DOWN TO THE WIRE. EITHER HER OR NOBODY ELSE AND THE FAMILY IS FACING STARVATION AND SO SHE HAS TO DO THIS.

Mary says NOW, YOU COULD HAVE EASILY, UM, MADE THE TALIBAN TOTALLY EVIL IN THIS BOOK.

Deborah says UH-HUH.

Mary says YOU COULD HAVE. BUT, UM, BUT THERE'S ONE SCENE, UM, WHERE SHE, UM, SHE'S DRESSED AS A BOY AND SHE'S OUT IN THE MARKETPLACE, AND A TALIBAN SOLDIER APPROACHES HER. TELL US WHAT HAPPENS THERE. SHE'S EARNING A LIVING BY READING LETTERS IN THE MARKETPLACE AND MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN AFGHANISTAN CANNOT READ AND SHE'S HAD EDUCATION AND HAS THAT. AND THE TALIBAN SOLDIER APPROACHES HER WITH A LETTER HE WANTS HER TO READ T BELONGS TO HIS WIFE THAT DIED. I PUT THAT IN .... IN THE BOOK BECAUSE IT'S IMPORTANT IN THE TRADITION OF NONVIOLENCE YOU HAVE TO SEE THE HUMAN BEING IN YOUR ENEMY AND I WANTEDED TO... CHILDREN TO KNOW THAT... THAT, UM, THAT THE TALIBAN PEOPLE, THE TALIBAN SOLDIERS ARE ALSO HUMAN BEINGS AND THEY HAD HE FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS AND HOPES AND DREAMS THE SAME AS EVERYBODY ELSE, EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE PART OF THIS INCREDIBLY REPRESSSIVE REGIME. THAT GIVES THEM, UM, GIVES US THE HOPE THAT THEY'RE GOING TO CHANGE. THAT THINGS WILL GET BETTER.

Deborah says UH-HUH.

Mary says NOW YOU TALK ABOUT THE HISTORY OF... OF NONVIOLENCE. THAT'S BEEN YOUR HISTORY, TOO, HASN'T IT?

Deborah says SURE. YES.
YEAH, I'VE BEEN DOING ANTI WAR WORK SINCE I WAS ABOUT 17. ONE FORM OR ANOTHER, SURE.

Mary says AT 17, WHAT... WHAT STRUCK YOU IN THAT AGE THAT'S WHAT YOU HAD TO DO?

Deborah says I LIVED IN A SMALL TOWN AND DYING TO GET OUT OF THE TOWN AND I HEARD ABOUT THE ANTI ATOMIC WEAPONS MOVEMENT AT THE TIME AND SEEMED SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING AND MORE IMPORTANT THAN MISSION ELSE... ANYTHING ELSE I WAS DOING IN MY LIFE AND THAT'S WHAT GOT ME IN TO IT AND THEN I GOT INVOLVED IN THE FEMINIST MOVEMENT AND DIFFERENT ISSUES KIND OF COME TOGETHER.

Mary says AND THEN I GUESS IT WAS IN THE LATE '90'S WHEN I... WHEN YOU FINALLY MADE IT OVER TO PAKISTAN AND WENT TO INTERVIEW THE WOMEN THERE. YOU TOLD ME THAT YOU ENDED UP TALKING TO... TO HUNDREDS.

Deborah says HUNDREDS.

Mary says HUNDREDS OF WOMEN, CHILDREN, MEN. DID YOU FIND THAT... THAT THERE WAS ANY COMMON FEELING OR COMMON THREAD AMONG THE STORIES YOU HEARD WITH THE WOMEN? THE WOMEN YOU TALKED TO THERE?

Deborah says YEAH. UM, THE COMPLETE USELESSNESS OF THEIR SUFFERING REALLY STRUCK ME OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

Mary says WERE MANY OF THOSE WOMEN EDUCATED? HAD THEY LIVED... YOU KNOW, THE PRE-TALIBAN TIME.

Deborah says YEAH, I TALKED TO AT LOVE EDUCATED WOMEN AND SOME WHO HAD NEVER BEEN EDUCATED WHO ALSO HAD LONGED FOR THAT AND WHO NEVER HAD THAT OPPORTUNITY. I TALKED TO WOMEN WHO HAD BEEN FIGHTING AGAINST THE SOVIETS. I TALKED WITH WOMEN IN RUSSIA WHO WORKED WITH THE SOVIET ARMY INSIDE AFGHANISTAN. ALL KINDS OF WOMEN. THE... THE THING THAT STRUCK ME IS THAT THEY HAVE NO MORE OF A SENSE OF FUTURE. THERE'S NO SENSE THAT... TO BE ABLE TO CONTROL THEIR LIVES OR HOPE FOR ANYTHING BETTER WHEN WE LOSE THAT SENSE, WE LOSE SOMETHING ABOUT OURSELVES THAT'S DEEPLY HUMAN AND THERE'S JUST A DEADNESS IN A LOT OF THEIR EYES. IT WAS VERY, VERY TRAGIC.

Mary says DID THEY TALK ABOUT THE ENEMY AT ALL? DID THEY SAY WHO THE ENEMY WOULD BE TO THEM?

Deborah says YEAH, THE ENEMY IS THE MEN WHO ARE CONTROLLING THEIR COUNTRY MUCH THAT WAS VERY, VERY CLEAR. THAT WAS KIND OF A RELIGIOUS BIGOTRY AND FUNDAMENTALISM THAT WAS RUNNING THEIR COUNTRY. FOREIGN INTERVENTION THAT WREAKED COMPLETE HAVOC ON AFGHANISTAN THE... IN THE LAST 20 YEARS AND THE ENEMY IS SIMPLY WAR TO PUT IT INTO ONE WORD.

Mary says WE DISCUSSED THIS, TOO, YOU KNOW GETTING RID OF ONE ENEMY DOESN'T MEAN THAT ANOTHER WON'T TAKE ITS PLACE.

Deborah says EXACTLY AND THE NORTHERN ALLIANCE NOW IN CONTROL OF KABUL ARE THE VERY PEOPLE WHO BOMBED AND RAPED AND MURDERED TONS AND TONS OF PEOPLE, UM, WHEN THEY WERE TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE SOVIETS AND WHEN THEY RAN THE COUNTRY THE LAST TIME. IT'S VERY... I DON'T HAVE A LOT OF HOPE THAT THINGS WILL GET BETTER UNDER THE NORTHERN ALLIANCE. MAYBE.

Mary says YEAH.

Deborah says YOU KNOW...

Mary says WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN PEOPLE HAVE HELD CRITICISM, UM, TO YOU ABOUT... ABOUT THIS SUBJECT MATTER NOT BEING APPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THAT?

Deborah says WELL, I NEVER GOT THAT CRITICISM FROM CHILDREN, WHICH HAS BEEN INTERESTING. UM, ALSO, UM, ALSO I LOOK AT IT A COUPLE OF WAYS. UM, THERE ARE BOOKS THAT ARE ESCAPIST BOOKS AND THEY'RE WONDERFUL BOOKS AND MAYBE IF I WERE A BETTER WRITER, I WOULD WRITE THOSE KIND OF BOOKS. BUT THESE ARE THE KIND OF BOOKS THAT I LIKE TO WRITE. IF PEOPLE WANT TO READ THEM, THAT'S A BONUS FOR ME. WE HAVE THIS STRANGE ATTITUDE TOWARDS CHILDREN IN THIS... IN THIS CULTURE, IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD IS THAT WE WANT TO PROTECT THEM AND WE HAVE THIS VERY IDEALIZED VIEW OF WHAT CHILDHOOD SHOULD BE LIKE. BUT YET AT THE SAME TIME WE'RE PERFECTLY CONTENT TO LET A LOT OF POPULATION OF THE WORLD'S CHILDREN LIVE WITHOUT CLEAN WATER OR TO WANDER AROUND MINE FIELDS AND GET THEIR LEGS BLOWN OFF AND TO LIVE IN OTHER KIND OF WAR ZONES OR DIE TO AIDS. WE'RE QUITE HAPPY TO LET THAT CONTINUE SO WE HAVE THIS VERY SCHIZOPHRENIC VIEW OF CHILDHOOD WHICH MAKES NO SENSE.

Mary says WHAT DO YOU SAY TO PEOPLE THAT ASK WHAT AGE WOULD BE APPROPRIATE FOR THIS BOOK?

Deborah says I WOULD SAY 8 AND UP.

Mary says YOU SAY MAYBE IF I WAS A BETTER WRITER. NOW, YOU DID WIN THE GOVERNOR GENERAL'S AWARD LAST YEAR AND THAT WAS FOR THE FIRST PUBLISHED NOVEL.

Deborah says YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT.

Mary says AND THIS IS YOUR SECOND.

Deborah says YEAH.

Mary says YOUR SECOND PUBLISHED NOVEL.

Deborah says RIGHT.

Mary says AGAIN, LAST YEAR, I MEAN, DID THAT ALSO COME AS A TOTAL SHOCKER TO YOU?

Deborah says WELL , A TOTAL SHOCK. UM, BUT ALSO I'VE BEEN WRITING FOR MANY, MANY YEARS. AND... AND THERE'S A WHOLE BUNCH OF NORM...

Mary says IT IS ENCOURAGING FOR ALL OF THOSE WANNA BE WRITERS OUT THERE.

Deborah says I'M ONE OF THOSE WRITERS THAT PRODUCES FOUR BAD NOVELS FOR EVERY ONE THAT'S HALFWAY DECENT. THAT'S PROBABLY MY WRITING LIFE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.

Mary says WILL WE SEE A SEQUEL?

Deborah says THE SEQUEL HAS BEEN DONE FOR ABOUT FIVE DAYS AND THE PUBLISHERS ARE LOOKING... LOOKING AT IT NOW AND I HAVE ANOTHER NOVEL AS WELL COMING OUT NEXT FALL ABOUT THE TIME OF THE BLACK DEATH IN FRANCE.

Mary says WITH ALL OF THIS GOES ON AS WELL, YOU HAVE ANOTHER JOB. TELL US...

Deborah says I WORK IN A HALFWAY HOUSE FOR WOMEN COMING OUT OF THE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITALS.

Mary says HOW DO YOU FIND THAT WORK?

Deborah says CHALLENGING, INTERESTING, FASCINATING, WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL WOMEN. UM, ALSO I JUST WANTED TO REITERATE THAT THE ROYALTIES OF THE BREAD WINNER ARE GOING OVERSEAS INTO PROJECTS FOR AFGHAN WOMEN AND CHILDREN SO WHEN PEOPLE BUY THE BOOKS, THEY'RE HELPING PEOPLE GET EDUCATED OVER THERE.

Mary says BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR CAREER. IF YOU... THANK YOU FOR COMING IN.

Deborah says THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

Mary says DEBORAH ELLIS IS THE AUTHOR OF "THE BREAD WINNER." AND IT'S PUBLISHED BY GROUND...

A picture of the book appears briefly on screen. The cover features a drawing of a boy wearing a turban.

Mary says AND NOW TO THIS MUNI MEDICAL. NO MATTER HOW HIGH-TECH MEDICINE GETS, THERE'S ALWAYS A STETHOSCOPE AROUND A DOCTOR'S NECK. THAT'S FOR SURE. HERE'S DR. CALDWELL WITH INFORMATION ON THIS.

A clip plays in which Paul Caldwell sits at a desk while holding a stethoscope.

Paul is in his late forties, with short, receding gray hair and a boxed beard. He's wearing a blue shirt and a printed brown tie.

A caption appears on screen. It reads "Doctor Paul Caldwell. Family Physician."

He says THIS INSTRUMENT IS ABOUT 20 O YEARS OLD. STETHOSCOPE WAS FIRST INVENTED IN THE EARLY 1800'S BY A PARISIAN PHYSICIAN. HIS FIRST STETHOSCOPE WAS A HOLLOW WOODEN TUBE THAT HE PUT IT UP TO ONE EAR. HE CALLED THE STETHOSCOPE AFTER THE GREEK WORD FOR CHEST AND SCOPING FOR EXAMINATION. IT'S A SIMPLE TOOL, REALLY. A PLASTIC DISK ON THIS END, IT MOVES IN AND OUT WITH SOUND WAVES WHICH ARE THEN TRANSMITTED BY HOLLOW TUBE TO GO BOTH EARS. NO NEED FOR ELECTRONICS OR OTHER GADGET FRIDAY. BUT WHAT DO WE PHYSICIANS HEAR IN THE STETHOSCOPE? WELL, THE LUNGS MAKE SOUNDS... IN NEW MOANIA, THE SMALL AIR SACKS ARE WITH FLUID AND INFECTION AND OPEN UP WITH A CRACKLING SOUNDS LIKE THIS...
