(music plays)

A title appears inside the shape of a house: More to money. The opening sequence shows a wooden table with a small lit candle.
Fast clips show different sets of hands performing activities on the table such as pulling petals from a daisy, drawing a big red heart, tuning a violin, flipping through the pages of a book, cooking, and pouring a glass of red wine.
In animation, the title appears inside the shape of a house: "More to life."

Then, Maureen Taylor appears in a studio with textured yellow walls and the logo of the show in the background, which reads "More to life."

Maureen is in her late thirties, with wavy brown hair in a bob. She's wearing a black blazer over a blue shirt.

She says Hello, I'm Maureen Taylor and this is "MORE TO LIFE." DO YOU FIND YOUR REFRIGERATOR HUMS LOUDER THAN YOU DO WHEN YOU'RE IN THE SHOWER. AND DID YOU THINK YOUR WASHER DRIER WOULD LAST A LIFETIME? MY NEXT GUEST HAS heard IT ALL. STEVE BRANNAN IS PRESIDENT OF BRANNAN APPLIANCE REPAIR. He's HERE TO TAKE YOUR CALL.

Steve is in his late thirties, with short-cropped brown hair and a trimmed goatee. He's wearing a blue shirt.

Maureen says IF OFF DISHWASHER THAT'S OUT OF ORDER, GIVE US A CALL. 416-484-2727, IF IT'S LONG DISTANCE RN DIAL 1-888-411-1234. AND IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO IT VIA THE INTERNET MORETOLIFE AT TVO.ORG.

A caption reads "416-484-2727. 1-888-411-1234."
Then, it changes to "moretolife@tvo.org"

Maureen says STEVE LIKES TO LOOK AT THE MAKE.

Steve says JUST FIND OUT WHAT MAKE IT IS AND A FEW IDENTIFYING CHARACTERISTICS IF IT'S POSSIBLE, WHERE THE LINT FITER IS ON THE DRIER.

Maureen says SPEAKING OF REFRIGERATORS THAT MAKE NOISES, I WAS AT MY PARENTS HOUSE ON THE WEEKEND AND IN THE BEDROOM ABOVE THE KITCHEN THEY HAVE THIS REFRIGERATOR THAT CLUNKS. WHAT IS THE COMPRESS OR SOMETHING.

The caption changes to "Steve Brannan. Brannan's Appliance Repair."

Steve says THE MOTOR IN A REFRIGERATOR ONE OF THEM, THE BUN WITH ONE THAT DOES THE WORK IS CALLED THE COMPRESSOR AND WHAT THAT IS IS A MOTOR AND A PUMP INSIDE A STEEL EGG SHELL. IF YOU LOOKED AT ONE LOOKS LIKE A BIG BLACK EGG SITTING BEHIND THE FRIDGE. AND THE MOTOR IS SUSPENDED INSIDE THIS STEEL EGG SHELL, EITHER HUNG BE BY FOUR SPRINGS OR SUPPORTED BY FOUR SPRINGS, ONE OF THOSE SPRINGS BREAKS OR COMES LOOSE, AND THE MOTOR TIPS OVER, AND BY NATURE A MOTOR WHEN IT STARTS SHAKES A BILL. IF IT'S ON THE SPRINGS, DESIGNED SO IT VIE DEBATES A BIT. IF ONE OF THE SPRINGS BREAKS, SOUNDS LIKE CLANK, CLANK WITH A HAMMER.

Maureen says THIS GOES AROUND THE CLOCK.

Steve says SOMETIMES STARTS AND STOPS SOMETIMES BOTH. SOME OF THE OLDER REFRIGERATORS, THIS IS LIKE 20, 30-YEAR-OLD REFRIGERATORS, WESTING HOW'S MADE A FRIDGE AND THE COMPRESSOR WHEPT IT STARTED SOUNDED LIKE A HUGE SPRING RELEASING, AND SOME WERE WERE REALLY LOUD. I REMEMBER SITTING AT SOMEBODY'S TABLE WHEN THE FRIDGE STARTED BEHIND ME AND I JUMPED IT WAS SO LOUD. BUT NOISES ARE FUNNY THINGS.

Maureen says I TAKE IT MY DAD DOESN'T THINK THIS IS WORTH FIXING.

Steve says IF YOU CAN LIVE WITH THE NOISE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO FIX IT. THE WORST THING IS YOU CAN HAVE SOMEBODY WHO IS USED TO A NOISE LIKE THAT. I REMEMBER ONCE MY FAMILY BUSINESS WE USED TO SELL APPLIANCES. I REMEMBER MY DAD GOING OUT TO A HOUSE BECAUSE A WOMAN HAD A BRAND NEW FRIDGE AND SHE WAS COMPLAIN THE NOISE. AS MY DAD WAS LISTENING TO IT THE WHOLE HOUSE HOUSE STARTED TO SHAKE. HE SAYS WHAT IS THAT. AND THERE WAS A BACK WINDOW THERE WAS A FREIGHT TRAIN. SHE DIDN'T NOTICE THAT NOTICE. SHE JUST NOTICED THE NOISE OF THE NEW REFRIGERATOR, AND THAT'S VERY COMMON. YOU GET AN OLD CLUNKY FRIDGE THAT SOMEONE IS USED TO, THEY BUY A NEW ONE, IT MAKES A DIFFERENT SOUND AND TROOIFS THEM NUTS. SO.

Maureen says MY MOM LOVES THIS REFRIGERATOR SPEAKING OF REFRIGERATORS, AND OTHER KITCHEN APPLIANCES I IT TAKE STAINLESS STEEL CRAZE IS STILL THE BIG HOT.

Steve says STILL GOING STRONG. SOMEBODY TOLD ME THE OTHER DAY COLOURS ARE COMING BACK. COLOURS WERE BIG BACK IN THE 80s.

Maureen says AVOCADO.

The caption changes to "Today's topic: Appliance Repair."

Steve says HIDEOUS COLOURS HAVE BEEN WITH US FOREVER. BUT, YEAH BACK IN THES WE HAD POPPY, AND HARVEST GOLD WAS AROUND FOR A LONG TIME. SO POPPY WAS WAS LIKE A BURNT ORANGE COLOUR, THE AVOCADO WHICH WAS THE GREEN. BUT, THEN IN THE 80s THERE WERE SOME PINK AND SOME GRAY. IF YOU WANT TO PLAY IT SAFE, BUY WHITE AND I THINK ALMOND IS STILL AROUND BUT THEY'RE CALLING ITS BUYING NOW. BUT, AGAIN ONCE SOMEBODY CALLED ME UP ABOUT A FRIGIDAIRE WASHER, ONLY A FEW YEARS OLD BECAUSE IT WAS TEAL BLUE. I SAID BUDDY THAT WAS A 950 WASHING MACHINE. BUY WHITE OR WHAT A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL DO, A LOT OF THE DISHWASHERS NOW HAVE PANEL KITS SO YOU CAN PUT ON A WOOD GRAIN PANEL. YOU CAN PUT ON YOUR WALLPAPER. I MEAN, YOU COULD GET JUST HAVE IT PAINTED TO WHATEVER COLOUR YOU WANT, AND A PANEL KIT IS A GREAT WAY. IF THINGS CHANGE, YOU CAN CHANGE COLOUR.

Maureen says WE'RE TALKING ABOUT AN PLAINS, MAJOR APPLIANCES THIS AFTERNOON WITH WITH STEVE BRANNAN. IF YOU HAVE ONE ON THE FRITS, GIVE US A CALL. 46-484-2727. LONG DISTANCE CALL TOLL FREE, 1-888-411-1234, AND THE E-MAIL ADDRESS ASK MORETOLIFE AT TVO.ORG.

The phone numbers and email reappear briefly.

Maureen says HI.

The Caller says HI, I HAVE A YES, MY HUSBAND HAS BEEN TALKING ABOUT GETTING A FRONT LOADING WASHING MACHINE BECAUSE I GUESS WE'RE IN THE COUNTRY AND WE HAVE LESS WATER. WE HAVE A WELL. SO HE'S INTERESTED IN THAT, BUT SOMEBODY ELSE TOLD US IF THERE'S A PROBLEM, WE HAVE THE WORK MACHINE IN THE KIT DHAEN WE'LL HAVE WATER EVERYWHERE. AND WE SHOULDN'T CONSIDER IT.

Steve says ANY TIME YOU HAVE A... THE BEST PLACE IN YOUR HOUSE FOR A WASHING MACHINE IS PROBABLY IN THE BASEMENT NEXT TO A DRAIN ON THE FLOOR. BECAUSE ALL THE WASHING MACHINE ALSO LEAK EVENTUALLY NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY WERE TO BUY, NO MATTER HOW WELL YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM. LEAKS ARE JUST REALLY COMMON. THE FRONT LOADING WASHERS DO SO FAR HAVE THE REPUTATION OF USING YOU KNOW LESS WATER. THEY'RE FREQUENTLY MORE EXPENSIVE, SO, I THINK THERE'S A NORTH AMERICAN BUILT ONE THAT SOLD UNDER A COUPLE DIFFERENT NAMES FOR ABOUT A THOUSAND DOLLARS, THEN THE EUROPEAN MACHINES ARE PROBABLY A THOUSAND DOLLARS AND UP. WITH WITH WITH I THINK THE MILA BEING AROUND 2,000 dollars. THEY... YOU SHOULD CHEQUE ON THE CYCLE TIMES. THEY FREQUENTLY TAKE A LOT LONGER TO WASH. AND THEY GENERALLY DO USELESS WATER BUT IF YOU'RE OUT IN THE COUNTRY YOU MIGHT WANT TO GET A WATER SOFTENER BECAUSE HARD WATER CAN CAUSE TROUBLE ANY WASHING MACHINE. SO IF YOU HAVE HARD WATER, IT CALCY GUYS PARTS IN THE MACHINE. SO GETTING WATER SOFTENER MIGHT NOT BE A BAD IDEA.

Maureen says ARE YOU GETTING MANY CALLS TO REPAIR FRONT LOAD WASHER.

Steve says THEY ONLY REALLY AGAIN I LOOK AT IT AS A WAY SOME OF IT IS FASHION. PEOPLE IT'S THE HOT THING TO GET. SO THEY BUY IT GOING BUILT-IN. A LOT OF THESE CAN BE BUILT-IN UNDER A COUNTER AND ALL THAT MEANS WHEN IT COMES TIME TO FIX IT IT'S MORE TIME AND ENERGY TO GET IT OUT. I LIKE MY JOB TO BE EASY. I WOULD LIKE TO WALK INTO A BIG ROOM. FULL MACHINE TWO FEET OUT ON A CONCRETE FLOOR, GET IN THERE, FIX IT. AND GET OUT. SO WHEN YOU START BUILDING THINGS IN OR IF YOU PUT IN A HARD WOOD FLOOR, YOU KNOW THE VIBRATION, SO, THE BEST THING IS TO GO SIMPLE AND BASEMENT CONCRETE FLOOR. IF YOU'RE NOT DOING THAT THE COST DOWN VOTE IT MIGHT COST YOU MORE TO GET IT FIXED. FIT WORKS WITH YOUR DESIGN AND IT'S WHAT YOU REALLY WANT, GO FOR IT. BUT A LOT OF THESE MACHINES TAKE SIGNIFICANTLY LONGER. SOME MACHINES TAKE AN HOUR AND A HALF TO DO ONE LOAD. OKAY, AND IT'S STILL TAKES A NORMAL PERIOD OF TIME TO DRY THEM IN THE DRIER. AND SO I'VE GOT CUSTOMERS WHERE THEY'VE GONE FROM THE NORTH AMERICAN WAY OF DOING LAUNDRY WHICH IS LIKE THREE OR FOUR BIG LOADS A WEEK, TO, LAUNDRY ALL DAY EVERY DAY WHICH IS FREQUENTLY WHAT THEY END UP DOING IN EUROPE. IT'S RIGHT THERE IN THE KITCHEN, OKAY, SO, YOU'RE DOING LAUNDRY ALL DAY EVERY DAY, BUT EVERYTHING IS SMALLER OVER THERE, THE FRIDGES ARE SMALLER. THEY CAN PICK UP STUFF ON THE WAY HOME. WE DON'T. WE GO SHOPPING ONCE A WEEK. WE STOCK UP. SO THAT'S THE THING. BUT IT'S JUST A DIFFERENT WAY OF DOING IT AND THERE ARE MANUFACTURERS, WHIRLPOOL WHO MANUFACTURERS A LOT FOR SEARS. THEY'VE HAD THIS CALYPSO WASHER. A SMALLER AGITATOR, MORE ROOD FOR CLOTHES. AGAIN THAT'S NOTHING REALLY NEW. IT'S JUST FRIGIDAIRE HAD A SMALL AGITATOR IN THE MID THAT WENT UP AND DOWN. SO IT'S JUST DIFFERENT WAY TO DO IT. BUT WATER CONSERVATION, YOU KNOW, SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND. BUT THEY'RE ALL WORKING ON IT. YEAH.

Maureen says THANKS MONIQUE.

Maureen reads from a laptop computer and says I HAVE A 1951 MOFFETT OFTEN. I WAS TOLD IT'S JUST AS ENERGY EFFICIENT AS MOST NEW ONES. IS THIS TRUE I LIKE THE OFTEN BECAUSE IT FITS THE DAY COR OF THE KITCHEN. IT'S A SMALL OVEN AND ALL THE BELLS AND WHISTLES WORK JUST FINE.

Steve says I DON'T THINK YOU SHOULD GO OUT AND BUY SOMETHING NEW. IF YOUR OLD ONE WORKS, TO BUY SOMETHING NEW TO SAVE A LITTLE BIT OF ENERGY WHEN WHAT YOU'VE GOT IS PROBABLY YOU KNOW BETTER BUILT THAN SOMETHING NEW. NOW, FROM AN ENERGY SAVING STANDPOINT, THEY DO SEEM TO WITH WITH WITH COMPUTERS AND THINGS, PREHEAT OVENS A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY, SO THE WAY AN OVEN WITH A HYDRAULIC THERMOSTAT WHICH IS THE DIAL MOST OF US PROBABLY HAVE WORKS. THE HEAT'S ON CONSTANTLY UNTIL IT HITS THE TEMPERATURE. THEN THE OVEN SHUTS OFF, THE TEMPERATURE DRIFTS OVER, SO IT'S NOT THAT EFFICIENT. OVERHEATS A LITTLE BIT. AND THEN IT UNDERHEATS AND SORT OF EVENS OUT. THE NEW A LOT OF THE NEW STOVE ALSO PULSE THE HEAT ON, BUT THE THING IS THAT THE ELECTRONICS THAT DO THAT PULSING ARE EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE AND WHEN THEY DO FAIL, IT'S YOU KNOW A FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS TO FIX. AND IT SEEMS TO ME TO BE HAPPENING A LOT SOONER THAN THE OLD HYDRAULIC CONTROL. SO AGAIN IF YOU'VE GOT SOMETHING THAT WORKS AND YOU'RE HAPPY WITH WITH WITH IT. DON'T THROW IT OUT JUST BECAUSE YOU MIGHT SAVE A LITTLE BIT OF ENERGY BECAUSE THE NEW ONES MIGHT NOT LAST AS LONG AND YOU BUY SOMETHING NEW EVERY COUPLE YEARS.

Maureen says MARION IS IN WATERDOWN.

The Caller says HI THERE. I JUST HAPPENED TO TUNE IN THE PROGRAMME AND I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS ABOUT APPLIANCE. WE HAVE A NIAGARA STOVE IN OUR KITCHEN, IT'S ABOUT SIX YEARS OLD. WHEN WE FIRST GOT IT, IT WAS BRAND NEW, EVERY TIME THERE WAS A POWER BREAK, THE CONTINUOUS CLEANING OVEN DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN, IT WOULD JUST LOCK, THE LATCH WOULD COME ON. WE HAD TO THRIFT TOP UP MANUALLY, GET PLIERS AND TURN the latch WE COULD USE THE OVEN AGAIN, AND NOW I CAN'T USE THE CONTINUOUS CLEAN OFTEN. THE OVEN DOOR WON'T LOCK.

Steve says OKAY, I THINK YOU MEAN SELF-CLEAN NOT CONTINUOUS CLEAN RIGHT?

Maureen says SELF-CLEAN.

Steve says CONTINUOUS clean is A DIFFERENT KETTLE OF FISH. THE STOVE, AGAIN IT'S GOT PROBABLY ELECTRONIC CONTROLS IN IT. AND WHEN YOU FIRST PLUG THE STOVE IN OR IF THE POWER GOES OFF, THE MAGNETS THAT LOCK AND UNLOCK THE DOOR CYCLE. SO THE CLOCK COMES ON AND THE ELECTRONIC CYCLE, THE LOCK ON AND OFF TO RESET EVERYTHING, AND PROBABLY WHAT'S HAPPENED THERE'S A COMPLETE ASSEMBLY ON THAT, THE SWITCH AND THE MAGNETS AND PROBABLY ONE OF THE MAGNETS IS BURNED OUT AND IT'S USUALLY A PROBLEM IN THE SWITCHES, SO WHAT HAPPENS THESE LITTLE MICRO SWITCHES DEVELOP A LITTLE TOO MUCH PLAY IN THEM. AND THE MAGNETS BURN OUT AND THAT'S USUALLY REPLACED AS A COMPLETE ASSEMBLY. SO YOU PROBABLY ARE GOING TO SPEND A COUPLE HUNDRED BUCKS TO FIX IT. BUT ONCE IT'S FIXED USUALLY STAYS FIXED AND IT'S JUST, IT WAS SOMER WITH AND THATER WITH IN THE LATCH MECHANISM HAS CAUSED YOU TROUBLE BECAUSE OF POWER FAILURES, BUT I DON'T THINK IT'S A POWER FAILURE CAUSE YOUR PROBLEM.

Maureen says SO ANOTHER POWER FAILURE WON'T MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Steve says NEXT TIME SHE SELF-CLEANED THE OVEN SHE PROBABLY WOULD HAVED THAT PROBLEM.

Maureen says THANKS VERY MUCH. MICHAEL IN TORONTO, HI.

The Caller says HI, HOW ARE YOU.

Maureen says GOOD.

The Caller says I WANTED TO ASK A QUESTION, I'M THINKING ABOUT PURCHASING A WASHER AND DRIER, BUT THE QUESTION IS ABOUT THE WASHER. MY CONCERN IS I GUESS THE TRADITIONAL WAESHS THAT AGITATOR IN THE MIDDLE. AND I'VE BEEN LOOKING AT A FRONT ROAD KIND OF TUMBLING OR ROLLING ACTION. OF THE TWO WHICH IS THE YOU KNOW PROBABLY A BETTER BUY AND WHICH IS BETTER FOR YOUR CLOTHING.

Steve says WELL, I DON'T KNOW BETTER BUY PART OF IT. YOU SORT OF HAVE TO PUNCH THE NUMBERS AND AS FAR AS BETTER FOR YOUR CLOTHES A TUMBLE WASHER IS CONSIDERED TO BE GENTLER ON YOUR CLOTHES. IF YOUR... WELL PACED ON THE FACT THAT IT'S BASICALLY JUST TUMBLING THEM AROUND. IT'S WASHING YOUR CLOTHES BY MOVING THE CLOTHES THROUGH THE WATER. IT HAS BEEN THE STANDARD IN EUROPE FOR YEARS, AND NOW YOU KNOW IT'S COMING OVER HERE, IT'S PICKING UP IN POPULARITY. THEY DO USELESS WATER. THEY ARE... THERE'S MORE INVOLVED IN MAKING THEM WORK, GENERALLY. YOU'VE GOT DOOR SEALS. LIKE IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, THIS WAY, YOU'VE GOT A BUCKET IN ONE YOU'VE GOT A BUCKETFUL OF WATER. A TOP LOADING MACHINE, BUCKETFUL OF WATER, SMALL SEALS AT THE BOTTOM AND NOT MUCH OF A TRICK TO KEEP WATER IN THE BUCKET WITH. THE FRONT LOADING WASHER YOU'VE GOT A BUCKET OF WATER TIPPED SIDE WAIST. YOU'VE GOT A DOOR SEAL. YOU'VE GOT SEALS AT THE BACK. YOU'VE GOT PRESSURE OF SUPPORTING ALL THIS WATER AND ALL THIS WEIGHT SIDEWAYS. SO, THER WITH THAT COME ALSO THE IS FREQUENTLY IN SUSPENSION AND SEALS, AND YOU KNOWER WITH AROUND THE DOOR SEAL AND THAT TYPE OF THING. THE TOP LOADING WASHER WHICH WE'VE USED HERE FOR YEAR, IF IT'S LOADED PROPERLY DOES A GREAT JOB WASHING CLOTHES AND IT'S LESS EXPENSIVE. YOU CAN PICK UP A GOOD WASHER FOR 6 OR 700 DOLLARS. FRONT LOADING ONE IS ABOUT YOU KNOW, CHEAPEST ONE I'VE SEEN IS ABOUT A THOUSAND DOLLARS. AND THEY GO UP FROM THERE. AND YOU JUST HAVE TO PUNCH THE NUMBERS. I WOULD SAY IF YOU'VE GOT THE ROOM FOR THE TRADITIONAL TOP LOADING WASHER AND YOU'RE NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT THE YOU KNOW HOW YOUR CLOTHES ARE TURNING OUT, BUT THE OTHER THING THE FRONT LOADERS YOU NOOED DO NEED A LOW SUDSING THE TEAR GENT. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO BUY SPECIAL DETERGENTS FOR THAT, NOW THEY'RE BECOMING MORE COMMON, BUT I HAVE TALKED TO PEOPLE THAT HAVE A HARD TIME FINDING THEM. BUT I THINK FRONT LOADING WASHERS ARE HERE TO STAY. THERE WERE A FEW QUITE A FEW YEARS AGO, 20 OR 30 YEARS AGO WESTING HOW'S MADE ONE, THE ONLY ONE THAT WAS OUT THERE. IT'S JUST DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGY FISHGTS WORKFORCE YOU I DON'T SEE ANY PROBLEM WITH IT. IT'S JUST YOU KNOW TRY TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

Maureen says OKAY, TWO THINGS YOU SAID IF IT'S LOADED PROPERLY, THE REGULAR TOP LOAD, WHAT'S LOADED PROPERLY?

Steve says NOT PACKING IT, SO, TOP LOADING WASHER, IS USUALLY A PRETTY BIG TUB. NORTH AMERICAN MACHINES ARE SORT OF BIG. YOU KNOW, CAPACITY MACHINES SO YOU DROP THE CLOTHES IN, DON'T THEM DOWN. AT THE END OF A CYCLE YOU SHOULD HAVE HALF A TUB OF WET CLOTHES. WITH WITH A FRONT LOADING MACHINE, MOST OF THEM YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO PACK THEM FULL, YOU JUST PACK THEM AND THAT'S WHY A SMALLER MACHINE HOLDS ABOUT THE SAME AS A TOP LOADING NORTH AMERICAN WASHER. THE DIFFERENCE IS THE NORTH AMERICAN WASHER MIGHT FINISH A WASH IN 30 MINUTES, SOME OF THE FRONT LOADING WASHERS TAKE AN HOUR TO AN HOUR AND A HALF. LIKE FOR A NORMAL LOAD. IF YOU'RE ASKING FRONT LOADING WASHER TO HEAT THE WATER, IT CAN TAKE YOU KNOW TWO HOURS, 2 and a half HOURS SO, CHEQUE THAT, GET THE MANUAL OUT AND USUALLY TELL YOU HOW LONG IT TAKES. SO IT'S NOT GOING TO BE FASTER. THAT'S ALL.

Maureen says AND WHAT TO YOU THINK OF THESE WASHER-DRIER COMBINATIONS, THE ALL IN ONE.

Steve says AND AGAIN, IT'S SOMETHING IF YOU CAN DWIT WITH WITH TWO, DOING IT WITH ONE, 40, 50 YEARS AGO MADE ONE ALMOST AS BIG AS THIS ROOM, THAT WOULD DO THAT, AND THEN THEY STOPPED DOING IT. IT'S SOMETHING, IT'S AN INTERESTING IDEA, IT'S NOT THERE ISN'T A LOT OF IT OUT THERE, AND YOU KNOW, IT MAKES SENSE IF YOU JUST WANT ONE MACHINE.

Maureen says IF YOU LIVED IN A TRAILER, A MOTOR HOME.

Steve says A LOT OF THE PROBLEM. HERE'S WHAT I SEE AND I DON'T KNOW IF I'M GOING TO UPSET, I'M NEGATIVE ON THE WHOLE SHOW. I'VE RUN INTO SO MUCH NEW PRODUCT COMING OUT. USED TO BE FOUR OR FIVE MANUFACTURERS. I I'VE GOT PEOPLE CALLING ME, I'VE GOT A THIS, I'VE NEVER HEARD OF IT NOW IT'S BROKEN, NOBODY WILL IF I CAN IT FOR ME. SO THE DISTRIBUTOR, WENT OUT OF BUSINESS OR DECIDED THEY DIDN'T WANT TO CARRY IT ANYMORE, SO, PART OF THE PROBLEM IS THE THROW AWAY SOCIETY KIND OF THING. A LOT OF THE TIME I TALK TO PEOPLE THINK TOASTER AND KETTLES. WHEN YOUR TOASTER BREAKS YOU DON'T GET IT FIXED ANYMORE YOU THROW IT OUT. THAT'S THE TREND I SEE IN MAJOR APPLIANCES WHERE THEIR STUFF SOMETIMES PEOPLE HAVE SPENT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON, TEN YEARS LATER IT'S GONE. YOU HAVE TO REDO YOUR KITCHEN. BECAUSE YOU CAN'T GET THE PARTS ANYMORE. THEY'RE NOT KEEPING PARTS FOR 30 YEARS. AND THE IRONY IS I CAN GET PARS OF THE 30-YEAR-OLD STOVES BUT I CAN'T GET PARTS OR FOR 8-YEAR-OLD STOVES.

Maureen says INTERESTING. LET'S GO TO SHELLY IN OSHAWA. HI.

The Caller says HI, HOW ARE YOU.

Maureen says GOOD.

The Caller says I HAVE A WASHER AND DRIER BOTH MADE BY HOT POINT. MY WASHER IT SPINS LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE. IT'S LIKE IT'S ALMOST GOING TO TAKE OFF OFF THE GROUND. I DON'T KNOW WHAT...

Steve says AND THAT'S GOOD OR BAD.

The Caller says THAT'S REALLY BAD, I MEAN AN UNBELIEVABLE NOISE.

Steve says SO IT'S REALLY NOISY.

The Caller says VERY, VERY LOUD, AND I HAD MY FATHER-IN-LAW MY STEPFATHER, ACTUALLY, HE FIGURED HE FIXED IT, BUT HE DIDN'T. IT WASN'T FIXED.

Steve says THERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS ON A HOT POINT WASH, HOT POINT WALKERS ARE USUALLY MADE BY GENERAL ELECTRONIC.
HOW OLD IS IT.

The Caller says MAYBE 3 YEARS OLD.

Steve says ONLY THREE YEARS OLD, OKAY, AND IT'S NOISY WHEN ITS SPINNING. OKAY. WELL, THERE ARE FIRST OF ALL IF IT'S ONLY THREE YEARS OLD, HE SHOULDN'T HAVE TAKEN IT APART BECAUSE A LOT OF PARTS ON THAT MACHINE WOULD STILL BE UNDER WARRANTY, FOR INSTANCE THERE'S USUALLY LIKE A FIVE--YEAR GUARANTEE ON THE TRANSMISSION. IT'S A PLASTIC TUB, IT'S A PLASTIC OUTER TUB. IT'S A PLASTIC INNER TUB TUB. THE NOISE WITHOUT HEARING IT IT MIGHT BE BARRINGS. SO THERE'S A TUB BARRING THAT MIGHT HAVE THE SEAL MIGHT HAVE GONE AND THE BARRING MIGHT BE DRY. SO IT COULD BE THAT. THERE'S A BREAK PACKAGE ON IT. WHICH IS GENERALLY REPLACED COMPLETELY WITH WITH THE TRANSMISSION. SO I WOULD HAVE THE MANUFACTURERCOME OUT ON IT. AND GET YOUR PAPERWORK TOGETHER ON IT. I TRY TO FORGET THAT YOUR DAD MIGHT HAVE TAKEN IT APART. AND JUST HAVE THEM COME OUT AND LOOK AT IT. AND HOPEFULLY IT WOULD BE UNDER WARRANTY. AND THEN THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO TELL YOU WHAT HAPPENED. YOU MIGHT JUST HAVE HAD A LEAK.

Maureen says SOMETIMES PEOPLE CALL IN ABOUT A NOISY SPINNING, THERE'S THAT HAIR CLIP THING WHERE.

Steve says IT'S PLASTIC AND ACTUALLY THAT'S THE BAD THING ABOUT PLASTIC, PLASTIC DOESN'T MAKE A LOT OF LIKE STEEL ON PLASTIC DOESN'T MAKE A LOT OF NOISE. SO THE OLDER MACHINES ARE ARE WHERE YOU HAD A STEEL OUTER TUB, YOU COULDN'T MISS IT. I'VE HAD MACHINES WHERE A NAIL GOES THROUGH HOLE IN THE TUB AND IT'S ACTUALLY BEEN IN THERE FOR SO LONG THAT THE OUTER TUBS, THEY CALL BECAUSE IT'S LEAKING AND YOU COME OUT AND THE TUB IS CUT IN WITH THE PIECES.

Maureen says BECAUSE THE NAIL WENT ALL THE WAY AROUND.

Steve says SO, YEAH, IT'S JUST.

Maureen says BUT THE PLASTIC, YEAH YOU'RE RIGHT.

Steve says THE GREAT THING ABOUT PLASTIC IS IT DOESN'T RUST OUT. WE MAY FIND IT ROTS OVER TIME BECAUSE THAT US THE HAPPEN WITH WITH PLASTIC. BUT DOESN'T RUST OUT SO SOME OF THESE MACHINES THE TUBS ARE GOING TO LAST FOREVER BECAUSE THEY'RE PLASTIC AND YOU KNEE WOULD BE NICE BECAUSE WHEN YOU JUST HAVE TO PUT IN NEW SEALS OR SOMETHING.

Maureen says GOOD LUCK, SHELLY, THANKS. AN E-MAIL FROM PATRICK IN TORONTO.

Maureen reads from the laptop and says MY QUESTION IS ABOUT THE GASKET TYPE THING WHICH MAKES THE SEAL ON THE DOOR TO THE FREEZER COMPARTMENT OF MY FRIDGE. THERE'S A SECTION WHERE THE GAS SET PERMANENTLY COMPRESSED THEREFORE THE SEAL IS INCOMPLETE. DOES THIS MEAN I'M SPENDING MORE ON ENERGY TO KEEP THE FREEZER COLD. POSSIBLE TO REPLACE THESE AND IF SO WHERE WOULD I GET IT AND HOW WOULD I INSTALL THE REPLACEMENT. THE BRAND OF MY FRIDGE IS SIMPLICITY.

Steve says SIM POLICE CITY... SIMPLICITY. FOR GETTING PARTS, SIMPLICITY IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE WHIRLPOOL, SO TRY WHIRLPOOL AS A COMPANY. OR POSSIBLY FRIGID AIR. BUT WHAT HE SHOULD DO FIRST IS TRY TO ADJUST THE DOOR ITSELF, SO IF IT'S NOT SEALING IN ONE SPOT, THE WAY A FRIDGE DOOR TRADITIONALLY HAS BEEN MADE, THERE'S A PLASTIC LINER AND A STEEL PANEL. AND THEN THE GASKET SORT OF HELD ON WITH A CLIPPING SYSTEM ALL THE WAY AROUND. WITH WITH SOME SCREWS OR CLAMPS. YOU REWARP THE DOOR. SO A FLIMSY PLASTIC PANEL AND A STEEL FLIMSY STEAL PANEL SCREWED TOGETHER SORT OF GIVE EACH OTHER RIGID DIFFICULT YOU LOOSEN THOSE SCREW AND YOU SORT OF REBEND THE COMBINATION OF THEM AND TIGHTEN THE SCREWS UP AGAIN AND YOU JUST EXPERIMENT WIT. SO IT'S A BIT OF A FINESSE KIND OF THING. THE OTHER THING YOU CAN DO IS GET A HAIR DRIER AND WARM THE GASKET UP. WHERE IT'S BEEN COMPRESSED AND SOMETIMES YOU CAN PACK A LITTLE BIT OF TISSUE PAPER IN, SOMETHING IN BEHIND TO IT PLUMP IT UP A BIT MORE AND THAT WILL USUALLY TO THE TRICK. I WOULD START WITH THE HAIR DRIER AND THEN TRIAD ADJUSTING THE DOOR. FREQUENTLY PUTTING A NEW GASKET ON JUST MAKES IT WORSE FOR A FEW MONTHS. I REPLACE GASKETS WHEN THEY'VE BEEN RIPPED BUT VERY SELDOM WHEN IT'S NOT SEALING RIGHT IN ONE SPOT.

Maureen says IS HE SPENDING MORE ENERGY.

Steve says DEFINITELY USES, IF COLD AIR CAN GET OUT. HOW MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE IT'S HARD TO SAY BECAUSE I SEE SOME FRIDGES THAT PEOPLE DON'T WANT KNOW TOUCH AND THE WHOLE THING IS OPEN AND THINGS ARE NICE AND COLD. JUST RUNS MORE.

Maureen says ANDY IN TORONTO, WELCOME.

The Caller says HI.

Maureen says GO AHEAD, ED.

The Caller says I'VE GOT A MOVE IT CLOTHES TRIER ABOUT TEN YEARS OLD AND WHAT IT'S DOING TO THE CLOTHES I'M GETTING LIKE ONE INCH BY A QUARTER INCH THIN LINE, GOOD, YOU HEARD ABOUT IT?

Steve says OH, YEAH.

The Caller says WHAT DO WITH WE DO.

Steve says THERE ARE GLIDES THAT SUPPORT THE FRONT OF THE DRUM AND THOSE GLIDES HAVE WORN DOWN, SO, IF YOU THINK OF THE DRUM AS A BIG SOUP CAN ON ITS SIDE, AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DRUM, SO IF YOUR DRUM IS SITTING LIKE THIS, THE BOTTOM OF THE DRUM THERE ARE A COUPLE OF GLIDES THAT KEEP THE DRUM UP. WHEN THE GLIDESER WITH DOWN THE DRUM STARTS TO DROP DOWN A BIT AND YOU GET A BIGGER GAP AT THE BOTTOM SO YOUR CLOTHES END UP GETTING INTO THE BOTTOM AND TUMBLE UP. BECAUSE THERE'S A SMALLER GAP AT THE TOP THEY GET PRESSED BETWEEN TWO PIECES OF MIDDLE AND BUTS A BLACK LINE ON THINGS. WE USUALLY TAKE THE MACHINE APART REPLACE THE GLIDES AND THE BELT AND CLEAN OUT THE BACK OF THE TRUM IN BEHIND THE BACK OF THE DRUM. THERE'S A HEATTY FUSER AND PICKS UP LINT AND WE USUALLY CLEAN THAT OUT AT THE SAME TIME. SO IT'S A BASIC OVERHAUL ON THE MACHINE, YOU DO IT ALL AT THE SAME TIME AND IT'S USUALLY GOOD FOR ANOTHER TEN OR 15 YEARS.

Maureen says ONE OF THOSE BIG EXPO ZAS ON AN AMERICAN NEWSMAGAZINE SHOW ABOUT DRIER LINT CAUSING FIRES AND STUFF. WHAT TO YOU THINK? CAN IT HOOP.

Steve says WHAT I HAD THE THEY SAY?

Maureen says COME ON STEVE YOU'RE OUT THERE ON THE TRENCHES.

Steve says TAKE A STAND, RIGHT? I'VE SEEN IN TOE LAST 20 YEARS OR SO, I'VE SEEN MAYBE FOUR OR FIVE DRIERS THAT LOOK LIKE THEY HAD SOME KIND OF FIRE IN THEM. BUT IT WAS ALWAYS JUST YOU KNOW THERE WOULD BE YOU KNOW A BUNCH OF DUST ON THE BOTTOM OF THE DRIER AND BLACK IN ONE SPOT. COMBUSTION IS POSSIBLE BUT I DON'T SEE IT AS BEING A CHRONIC KIND OF THING. NOW WHAT I NORMALLY DO, THERE ARE SOME TRIERS THAT HAVE A HABIT OF BUILDING UP IN A CERTAIN AREA AND THIS PARTICULAR ONE, NOW ITEM ALL STEEL, SO IF EVEN IF IT CAUGHT FIRE, THERE'S NOTHING NEXT TO IT TO BOMB BUST. IN FACT THE STUFF THAT'S LIKE IF IT SUCKED UP A PIECE OF PAPER, THE PIECE OF PAPER WOULD BURN KIND OF THING BUT THEY WOULDN'T DO ANYTHING. SO THESE WITH WHERE THE FIRE OCCURS, ALMOST LIKE HAVING A FIRE IN A WAY IN YOUR FIREPLACE. I MEAN THE YOU HAD A FIRE IN YOUR FIREPLACE WOULD YOU CALL THE DEPARTMENT. NO.
SO, TO HAVE A FIRE IN THIS AREA YOU KNOW ISN'T REALLY THAT BIG A DEAL. BUT, IF YOU HAVE REALLY BAD VENTING, I'VE SEEN DRIERS THAT HAD YOU KNOW ALL KINDS OF LINT BACKED AROUND THE MOTOR. IT'S VERY UNUSUAL, BUT YOU SNOW OF THE AREAS OF THE CITY THAT DO I WORK IN, NORTH TORONTO, THEY HAD THREE INCH DUCTING FOR THEIR DRIER AND OVER THE YEARS, IT ACCUMULATES. BUT I DON'T I'VE NEVER SEEN IT AS BEING A HUGE PROBLEM.

Maureen says ALL RIGHT, LET'S GO TO NAN KITCHENER. HELLO.

The Caller says HI, THANK YOU FOR TAKING MY CALL.

Maureen says YOU'RE WELCOME.

The Caller says WE HAVE AN OLD WESTINGHOUSE REFRIGERATOR, IT'S ABOUT 40 YEARS OLD. STARTING TO FREEZE EVERYTHING IT IN. NOT ONLY IN THE FREEZER BUT IN THE COMPARTMENT AS WELL AND WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE THE STAT AND WE THOUGHT IF IT WOULD BE WORTHWHILE FIXING.

Steve says IT HAVE YOU TRIED TURNS IT TOWN TO A LOWER SETTING.

The Caller says YES THE LOWEST IT WOULD GO.

Steve says HAVE YOU TURNED IT OFF AND LEFT IT OFF FOR ABOUT HALF AN HOUR.

The Caller says WE TRIED IT FOR A FEW DAY.

Steve says COLD CONTROL WOULD NORMALLY TO THE TRICK. YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY USE THE RIGHT COLD CONTROL TO REPLACE IT. IS IT A FROST-FREE FIREFIGHTER.

The Caller says IT IS, ONE OF THE FIRST ONES THAT COME UP, THAT'S NOT FROST FREE, BUT IT AUTOMATICALLY DEFORESTS.

Steve says SO IT'S LIKE A CYCLE MAIKT YOU HAVE TO DEFROST FREEZER ONCE A YEAR AND THE FRESH FOOD SECTION.

Maureen says YES.

The Caller says YOU COULD TRY A COLD CONTROL SHOULD DO THE TRICK. IT'S, JUST MAKE SURE YOU'RE DEALING WITH SOMEBODY WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING. THAT'S ALL. THAT COLD DO THE TRICK. LOTS OF COLD LIKE FREEZING EVERYTHING IS GENERALLY A GOOD SIGN. IT MEANS THAT THE FRIDGE IS VITAL AND IS CAPABLE OF DOING THE JOB. SO COLD CONTROL SHOULD DO THE TRICK.

Maureen says YOU AND I WERE TALKING ABOUT A SIDE BY SIDE REFRIGERATOR FREEZER, AND LET ME GO OVER, YOU CAN'T DEFROST THE FREEZER SIDE WITHOUT SHUTTING OFF THE REFRIGERATOR.

Steve says IN A FROST-FREE REFRIGERATOR, MOST FROST-FREE REFRIGERATORS THE FREEZER IS WHERE THE COLD IS BEING MADE. AND THAT'S WHY IT'S A FREEZER SO. THE COOLING COILS ARE ACTUALLY IN THE FREEZER USUALLY IN THE BACK WALL. THERE'S A FAN, MOST OF AIR IS CIRCULATED THROUGH FREEZER AND THEN WHAT THEY DO, IT'S LIKE THE AIR-CONDITIONING IN YOUR HOUSE, THEY BLOW A LITTLE BIT OF COLD AIR INTO THE FRESH FOOD SECTION. AND THAT'S THE WAY IT WORKS. AND THEN A LOT OF THE TIME PEOPLE SAY I'LL DEFROST MY FREEZER AND EVERYTHING GOES BAD IN THE FRESH FOOD SECTION, THAT'S WHY.

Maureen says WE'RE TALKING ABOUT APPLIANCES THIS AFTERNOON WITH WITH STEVE BRANNAN OF BRANNAN APPLIANCE REPAIR. IF YOU HAVE ONE OF YOUR MAJOR AN PLAINS NOT WORKING WELL, THIS IS THE TIME TO GIVE STEEP A CALL. 416-484-2727. LONG DISTANCE, 1-888-411-1234. AND OUR E-MAIL ADDRESS IS MORETOLIFE AT TVO.ORG.

The phone numbers and email reappear briefly.

Maureen says YOU DON'T USUALLY RECOMMEND SPECIFIC BRANDS, BUT SARAH IS LOOKING FOR JUST SOME GENERAL COMMENTS, OUR FRIDGE ISN'T WORKING AS WELL AS IT USED TO, IT WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED SOON, DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS ABOUT FRIDGES WITH WITH WITH WATER AND ICE DISPENSERS, HOW RELIABLE THEY RANY BRAND OF TOP BOTTOM FRIDGE THAT HAS A WATER-ICE DISPENSER.

Steve says I DON'T KNOW IF ANY OF THE UNITS WITH WITH FREEZER ON THE BOTTOM HAVE A WATER DISPENSER. IN GENERAL I'M NOT A BIG FAN OF ICE MAKERS AND WATER DISPENSERS BECAUSE THEY BREAK. YOU KNOW STUFF GOES WRONG WITH WITH THEM, AND IT JUST AGAIN IT MAKES MY JOB MORE COMPLICATED. RAILED HER THE JUST KEEP THE THING GOING AND YOU KNOW, I ALSO FIND THAT THE WATER, EVEN IF YOU'VE GOT A CARBON FIT , IT DOESN'T END UP TASTING VERY GOOD AT A WHILE. THE RESERVOIRS ARE PLASTIC, AND THEY ABSORB PLASTIC ABOUT SO,S FOOD ODORS AND THINGS LIKE THAT. SO EVENTUALLY MY PARENTS HAVE HAD ONE FOR YEARS, I WON'T DRINK THE WATER FROM IT. ICE MASHTION YOU HAVE TO USE A LOT OF ICE TO KEEP IT TO KEEP IT FROM TASTING STEAL. SOME PEOPLE LOVE YOU KNOW ICE MAKERS, SO, IT'S JUST THAT WHEN THEY BREAK YOU PAY A LOT.

Maureen says HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR ICE AT HOME.

Steve says I HAVE ICE CUBE TRAYS, MY RUBBERMAID MAKES ONE WITH A LID ON IT AND I'M NOT EVEN SURE IF IT'S RUBBERMAID, IT MIGHT BE TUPPERWARE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. WITH WITH A LITTLE POP UP TOP ON IT AND IT'S SEALED SO THE ICE SO YOU CAN HOLD IT UPSIDE DOWN, THE WATER WON'T COME OUT. AND IT DOESN'T GO STEAL. YOU KNOW, I DON'T DRINK A LOT OF DRINKS WITH ICE IN THEM AND SO MY ICE CUBES A USUALLY A LITTLE POWDERY. PEOPLE WILL COME OVER AND PUT ICE IN THEIR WATER, AND SAY THIS TASTES AWFUL BECAUSE OF THE ICE, SO, YEAH. NOW FRIDGES WITH WITH FREEZERS ON THE BOTTOM, THERE ARE MORE CHOICES NOW THAN THERE USED TO BE AND IT WOULD BE WHAT I GET THE BIGGEST FRIDGE THAT WILL FIT IN THE SPACE YOU'VE GOT. THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE, I THINK.

Maureen says DO YOU HAVE AANCE FOR WHERE THE FREEZER IS.

Steve says I LIKE FREEZER ON THE BOTTOM. AGE IT'S A GREAT IDEA.

Maureen says FIRST THING YOU'VE BEEN POSITIVE ABOUT THE WHOLE SHOW.

Steve says WELL, IF YOU'VE GOT YOUNG KIDS, IT MIGHT BE DIFFICULT TO PUT THE MILK AND THE JUICE SOMEWHERE WHERE THEY CAN GET IT. THAT'S THE ONLY DISADVANTAGE I CAN THINK. BUT IF YOU'VE GOT A STEPPING STOOL OR SOMETHING THEY CAN CLIMB UP TO GET. IN I THINK IT'S BRILLIANT. BECAUSE YOU OPEN THE DOOR. YOU CAN SEE IN AND REACH IN, YOU DON'T LOSE THINGS THE SAME WAY.

Maureen says OKAY, OVER TO DOROTHY IN SUDBURY.

The Caller says HI, MAUREEN AND STEVE. I HAVE A WHIRLPOOL WASH HERB, 16 YEAR LTION OLD AND TO PUT IT ON YOU HAVE TO HOLD THE NOBODY. OKAY, RECENTLY IT STOPS EVERY TWO MINUTES WHEN I PUT IT ON THE JET CYCLE.

Steve says SOUNDS LIKE THE TIMER, THEY'RE WELL KNOWN FOR TROUBLE YOU KNOW AFTER ABOUT 10 OR 15 TWRES CONTACTS IN THE TIMER IF YOU LOOK INSIDE IT WOULD LOOK LIKE A LITTLE MUSIC BOX WITH WITH LITTLE FINGERS THAT MOVE UP AND TOWN AND THOSE ARE SWITCHES AND WHAT HAPPENS THE CONTACTS INSIDE THE TIMER BURN AND WHEN YOU'RE HOLDING THE DIAL, YOU'RE ACTUALLY FORCING THEM TOGETHER TO MAKE IT WORK. SO GENERALLY SPEAKING IF YOU REPLACE THE TIMER ON THAT MACHINE, IT WOULD BE FINE AND IT'S A GOOD WASHER, YOU PROBABLY HAVE QUITE A FEW MORE YEARS IN.

Maureen says IT AFTER 16.

Steve says YEAH, AND I'M POSITIVE TOO.

Maureen says IN FACT WE HAVE A QUESTION FROM SUE WHOS TO KNOW AN PROX MAT LIFE SPAN OF THE DIFFERENT APPLIANCE. I'M GOING TO NAME ONE AND YOU'RE GOING TO GIVE ME THE NUMBER OF.

Steve says IT KEEPS CHANGES.

Maureen says STOVE.

Steve says I'M USED TO SEE STOVES LAST 30 TO 40 YEARS.

Maureen says ARE YOU SAYING THAT MAYBE THE NEWER STOVES AREN'T GOING TO HAVE THE SAME OR MAYBE ALL AN PLAINS AREN'T GOING TO HAVE THE SAME LIFE SPAN.

Steve says IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, YOU KNOW BEST THING FOR THE MANUFACTURER WOULD BE FOR YOU TO BUY SOMETHING NEW EVERY TEN YEARS. YOU HAVE THEY HAVE TO WORK SO IT THAT YOU FEEL YOU'RE GETTING YOUR MONEY'S WORTH SO. IF YOU BUY SOMETHING IT ONLY LASTS FOUR OR FIVE YEARS. YOU DON'T THINK YOU'VE GOT YOUR MONEY'S WORTH AND YOU'RE GOING TO THROW IT OUT AND SWEAR YOU'LL NEVER BUY ANOTHER ONE. IF YOU GET TEN YEARS I THINK MOST PEOPLE ARE PROBABLY HAPPIEST, ALTHOUGH THEY'LL BE GOING GEE, MY MOM HAD ONE THAT LASTED 20. THE PROBLEM WHAT I SEE IS SOME OF THE BUILT-IN APPLIANCES PROVINCE GLASS COOK TOP. WAS OUT ON A CALL A COUPLE WEEKS AGO, GLASS COOK TOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT THE WHOLE THING SHATTERED. IT'S GOT CAST IRON BURNERS A GLASS TOP AND PHONED FOR PARTS. PART NOTHING LONGER AVAILABLE. IT WAS 8 YEARS OLD AND IT WAS A GOOD NAME. A WELL-KNOWN BRAND NAME. AND FORTUNATELY SHE WAS ABLE TO FIND SOMETHING THAT FIT IN THERE. SOMETIMES YOU CAN'T. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO REDO YOUR COUNTERS ON THE. THAT'S A BIG DEAL. SO IT'S HARD TO.

Maureen says SUE HAS A KENMORE IN EVERYTHING, SO WHAT ABOUT FRIDGE, DISHWASHER.

Steve says AL WI WOULD SAY AGAIN, I'M USED TO A LOT OF THE PRODUCT I WORK ON NOW, WAS OLDER PRODUCT AND I'M SEEING FOR IT THE FIRST TIME AFTER TEN OR 15 YEARS. BUT I SEE A LOT OF NEW PRODUCT THAT'S ONLY FIVE OR SIX YEARS OLD.

Maureen says INTERESTING. WHAT WOULD BE THE APPLIANCE THAT WOULD PROBABLY HAVE TO BE REPLACED THE EARLIEST.

Steve says DISHWASHERS JUST SO EASY TO ABUSE. SO, YOU KNOW, YOU THROW IN ALL KINDS OF THINGS. I WOULD SAY ANYTHING THAT COMBINES WATER, AND ELECTRIC AND FOOD, SO, WASHING MACHINES AND DISHWASHERS WOULD BE THE TWO. DRIERS I THINK YOU FIND ARE THE MOST LONG LIVED AND THEN YOU KNOW, FRIDGES AND STOVES, STOVES WE USUALLY END UP LIKE ALL THESE GLASS TOPS, WELL, EVERYBODY DROPS STUFF, AND SO WHAT WE FREQUENTLY FIND IS IF IT'S A GLASS TOP THEY ONLY MAKE SO MANY, AND THEN THEY'RE GONE. THE OTHER THING IS ELECTRICS, SO THEY'LL MAKE SO MANY ELECTRIC BOARDS, IF THERE'S A BIG LIGHTNING STORM DOWN IN THE STATES, AND THE POWER GRID GETS BLOWN AND ALL THESE ELECTRICS BLOW UP, THE INVENTORY IS GONE. AND I'VE SEEN PRODUCT THAT IN AS LITTLE AS FOUR YEARS YOU COULDN'T GET PARTS FOR IT ANYMORE. SO, BUT, SO DON'T GET THE IDEA THAT THAT YOUR DREAM KITCHEN IS GOING TO BE THERE FOR 20 YEARS OR 30 YEARS.

Maureen says TIEIA THAT, HI.

The Caller says HI.
I DON'T FEEL SO BAD NOW.

Maureen says WHAT HAVE YOU got?

The Caller says I HAVE A STOVE, IT'S MADE BY MOVE IT, IT'S ABOUT 50 YEARS OLD. AND IT WORKS EXCELLENT. WHAT I WAS WONDERING MORE ABOUT IS THE HOW ENERGY EFFICIENT IT IS. SOMETIMES I'M AFRAID TO USE THE OVEN THINKING I CAN SEE MY HYDRO BILL GOING UP.

Steve says ANY OVEN WOULD USE A FAIR BIT OF ELECTRICITY GETTING UP TO HEAT, BUT ONCE YOU'RE UP TO HEAT, IT'S NOT SOMETHING I WOULD WORRY ABOUT. I WOULDN'T THROW OUT AS WE WERE SAYING EARLIER. I WOULDN'T THROW OUT A GOOD WORKING STOVE THAT'SING TO THE JOB FOR YOU TO BUY ANOTHER ONE FOR A THOUSAND DOLLARS. THE ONLY ADVANTAGES I CAN SEE WITH WITH SOME OF THE NEW ONES ARE ARE IF ITEM DOING, IF THE NEW ONE DOES SOMETHING THAT YOUR OLD ONE DOESN'T DO. FOR INSTANCE SOME OF THE CONVECTION OVENS I'VE WORKED ON SOME OF THE WHIRLPOOL OVENS AND WHAT IMPRESSED ME WAS THERE WERE FOUR DIFFERENT WAYS TO BAKE. SO YOU'VE GOT A BAKE ELEMENT IN THE BOTTOM. THEN A SLOW COOK ELEMENT THAT'S IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT. THEY HAVE A CONVECTION ELEMENT. THEY HAVE A BROIL ELEMENT AND YOU CAN COOK, BROIL, CONDITION VEK SHUN, BAKE, CONVECTION, SLOW COOK, THE WHOLE BOOK SO THE CUSTOMER NEEDS AN ELEMENT. WE DON'T HAVE ONE. SHE'S GOT TO WAIT FOR A COUPLE WEEKS. WE TAPE THE WIRES UP AND SHE BAKES WITH WITH THE CONVECTION OVEN, SO YOU'RE NEVER OUT. LIKE GET HAVING FIVE WHEELS ON YOUR CAR AND GETTING A FLAT. IT'S NOT A BIG DEAL. THAT'S A NICE THING. AND PEOPLE FROM A BAKING STANDPOINT ONCE PEOPLE TRICON VEK SHUN, SOME LIKE IT, SOME DON'T BUT IT'S AN OPTION.

Maureen says BECAUSE ELECTRIC IS GOING UP SO, IS NATURAL GAS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE.

Steve says I THINK GETTING USED TO THINGS BEING A LITTLE MORE EXPENSIVE IS JUST THE WAY IT'S GOING TO BE. NOW I HAVE CUSTOMERS THAT HAVE MOVED INTO PLACES WITH WITH EUROPEAN OVENS, THEY'RE REAL TINY, YOU CAN'T COOK A TURKEY IT IN. IT'S TOO SMALL TO IF I HAD EVEN A MEDIUM-SIZED TURKEY. THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO WILL GET ANOTHER STOVE. SO THAT THEY CAN DO YOU KNOW CHRISTMAS DINNER OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. SO AGAIN IT'S JUST A DIFFERENT WAY OF DOING THING.

Maureen says IF YOU ADD UP THE PRICE OF A COOK TOP AND A WALL OVEN SORT OF THING IS, IT ALWAYS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE ONE UNIT.

Steve says I WOULD SAY IT WOULD HAVE TO BE BECAUSE A WALL OVEN OVEN IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE. IF YOU'RE GETTING A SELF-CLEANING ONE IT'S GOING TO BE A THOUSAND TO 2,000 DOLLARS. AND SOME OF THEM ARE WAY MORE THAN THAT. AND THEN THE COOK TOP IS PROBABLY 500 TO A THOUSAND DOLLARS DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU GET THERE.

Maureen says AND YOU LIKE THE COOK TOP.

Steve says IF I WERE GOING TO CHOOSE LIKE MY PERFECT KITCHEN KIND OF THING, I WOULD PROBABLY GET AN ELECTRIC WALL OVEN OR DOUBLE WALL OVEN BECAUSE IT'S NICE TO HAVE TWO OCHS. MY PARENTS HAVE LIKE A 50-YEAR-OLD MOVE IT STOVE, TWO OFTENS, FIVE BURNERS ON TOP. CAN'T GET ANY PARTS FOR IT. IF IT GOES I'M GOING TO BE TELLING MY OWN MOTHER, YOU'RE OUT OF LUCK. BUT DOUBLE OVENS ARE NICE. A GAS COOK BUT YOU NEED GOOD POTS. IF YOU HAVE THIN POTS GAS IS GOING TO BURN EVERYTHING ON YOU.

Maureen says THANK YOU VERY MUCH DIANE. HELEN, HI.

The Caller says HI. YEAH, THANK YOU FOR TAKE MIG CALL, I HAVE A MAY TAG IT'S ABOUT 12, 13 YEARS OLD. THE DRIER. IT'S MADE A LOUD NOISE AND MAKES REALLY LOUD NOISE WHEN IT STARTS BUT AFTER A WHILE YOU DON'T HEAR IT. AND MY HUSBAND DID LOOK AT IT AND SAID HE FIXED SOMETHING, BUT NOW IT'S STARTING TO COME BACK AGAIN.

Steve says IT'S THE BLOWER, SO THERE'S A FAN BLADE THAT'S ATTACHED TO ONE END OF THE MOTOR, AND WHAT HAPPENS IS IT BREAKS LOOSE SO, THE BLOWER THE MOTOR HAS A WHAT'S CALLED A D SHAFT ON IT. FLAT ON ONE SIDE OF THE MOTOR SHAFT, AND THE FAN BHAD HAS A CORRESPONDING SPOT AND THE FAN BLADES CLAMP TO THE MOTOR. AND BECAUSE DIFFERENT THINGS GET IN, THE FAN BLADE GETS TO BE ROUND INSTEAD OF A D SHAPE SO THE MOTOR TAKES OFF, AND THE FAN BLADE SORT OF RATTLES ALONG AND GETS UP TO SPEED. AND THEN IT QUIETS DOWN AND THE SAME THING YOU SHUT THE MOTOR OFF THE MOTOR STOPS RIGHT AWAY AND THE FAN BLADE KEEPS RATTLING ON. WHEN THEY REPLACE THE BLOWER, THAT WILL QUIET EVERYTHING TOWN. IT ALSO DRIES BETTER TOO. YOU PROBABLY FOUND IT'S NOT DRYING AS QUICKLY AS IT SHOULD BE.

Maureen says OKAY, THOSE FANS MADE ME THINK OF A REFRIGERATORS AS WELL THAT YOU'VE GOT TO WATCH THE FAN AND THE FREEZER AS WELL THAT IT DOESN'T SNAP OFF AND GET CAUGHT ON SOMETHING.

Steve says YEAH, DEPENDS ON THE FRIDGE DESIGN. MORE ARE BUILT INTO THE BACK NOW WHERE YOU CAN'T GET THEM. BUT SOME OF THE OLDER ONES HAD FAN COVERS AND RAN THE YOU ARE THE ECONOMY THERE AN SMASHED THE COVER.
BUT YOU CAN STILL, YOU'RE RIGHT WE HAVE THAT OLD FRIDGE AND WE FOUND A PART FOR IT.

Maureen says OKAY, AN E-MAIL FROM RANTY, WHEN SETTING UP THE NEWER APPLIANCES I FELT THE ARE REFRIGERATOR HAS TO BE PERFECTLY LEVEL. IS THAT IMPORTANT THIS.

Steve says IF YOU CAN MAKE IT PERFECTLY LEVEL, BUT YOU KNOW, YOU COULD KILL YOURSELF TRYING. THEY'RE SO... I'M SOUNDING LIKE MR. BAD NEWS HERE. THE STEEL THEY MAKE THEM OUT OF IS SO THIN NOW, THAT IF YOUR FLOOR ISN'T DEAD LEVEL. THE FRIDGE TAKE A SHOE BOX, OKAY, AND YOU ME THE IF YOU PUSH ON A CORNER OF IT IT SORT OF BENDS AROUND. SO YOU'VE GOT THIS BIG BOX WHICH A COUPLE OF GUYS DROP OFF A TRUCK AND PART INTO YOUR HOUSING AND IF OFF WOOD FLOOR, FREQUENTLY THE FLOOR ISN'T DEAD FLAT EITHER SO. I GET A LOT OF REFRIGERATORS THAT BECAUSE THE FLOOR ISN'T DEAD LEVEL. THE DOOR DOESN'T HANG ON THEM PROPERLY. LIKE THE OLD ONES WE COULD MOVE, BUT THE NEW ONES ARE MANUFACTURED A LOT OF THEM JUST SO. IF YOUR FLOOR HAS BEEN BENT. I'VE HAD EXPENSIVE 2,000 DOLLAR REFRIGERATORS WHERE WE'VE HAD TO PART HOCKEY STICK UNDER ONE SIDE OF IT JUST SO THE DOORS YOU CAN YOU CAN TELL, YOU LIFT UP ON THE BOX AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE DOORS HANG SQUARE. IF HE'S GOT A PERFECTLY LEVEL FLOOR, IT WILL BE BETTER. BUT DEPENDS ON WHAT'S HAPPENED TO THE FRIDGE WHEN and and IT GET ALSO THE.

Maureen says AND IF YOU'RE MOVING AN APPLIANCE. I THINK WE TALKED ABOUT THIS A LONG TIME AGO. A FRIDGE SHOULD NEVER BE.

Steve says YOU CAN SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO LIE THEM DOWN, IF YOU HAVE TO LIE THEM TOWN, GENERALLY YOU SHOULD LIE THEM DOWN ON ON ITS SIDE, AND AS I WOULD LET IT STAY UP RIGHT FOR ABOUT TWICE AS LONG AS IT WAS LYING DOWN, SO THE REASON BEING THAT THE COMPRESS ER IS FULL OF OIL, AND WHEN YOU LIE IT TOWN, THE OIL WOULD HAVE A TENDENCY TO SBRUN THE LINES THE REFRIGERATOR LINES, IF YOU PLUG IT IN RIGHT AWAY THE COMPRESSOR STARTS PUMPING AND IT CAN PUMP THAT OIL INTO THE REFRIGERATION SYSTEM AND THAT CAN CAUSE TROUBLE. SO THE IDEA IS IF YOU'RE LYING IT DOWN, THE OIL IS GOING TO GO INTO THOSE LINES BUT WHEN YOU STAND IT BACK UP AGAIN. YOU LEAVE IT SITTING FOR YOU KNOW, AGAIN AS LONG AS POSSIBLE BEFORE PLUGGING IT. IN THAT GIVES THE OIL A CHANCE TO DRAIN BACK DOWN INTO THE COMPRESS.

Maureen says GOT IT. MARIJUANA HAVE NEXT. HI.

The Caller says HI, I HAVE A KEN MORE STOVE, ELECTRIC STOVE. IT'S JUST OVER A YEAR OLD AND THE FRONT BURNER ON IT, SOMETIMES NOT ALWAYS, WHEN I'M COOKING ON IT THERE WILL BE LIKE A SURGE OF POWER ALMOST LIKE IT WILL BE SOMETHING ON A SIMMER AND SUDDENLY FOR NO LISTEN IT WILL START TO GO TO A RAPID BOIL FOR NO REASON AND I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S THE BURNER OR SWITCH.

Steve says IT WOULD NORMALLY BE THE SWITCH BECAUSE THE BURNERS GENERALLY JUST IS IT LIKE A COIL BURN CENTRE.

The Caller says REGULAR COIL BURNER.

Steve says SO IT'S LIKE A LIGHTBULB. IT DOES WHAT IT'S TOLD TO DO. IF IT'S GETTING REALLY HOT IT WILL BE BECAUSE OF THE SWITCH. AND THE SWITCH JUST MIGHT NOT BE WORKING AS WELL AS IT SHOULD BE, OR IT MAY BE STICKING A BIT. SO, I WOULD JUST HAVE THEM COME OUT, IT'S LESS THAN A YEAR OLD.

The Caller says JUST PAID FOR, SO, IT'S ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF OLD.

Steve says JUST SAY THE SWITCH IS ACTING RADICALLY, AND IT STICKS ON HIGH EVERY NOW AND THEN AND THE GUY WILL JUST REPLACE THE SWITCH. WILL JUST REPLACE THE SWITCH. AND JUST INSIST ON THEM REPLACING IT.

Maureen says WHAT ARE WARRANTIES LIKE.

Steve says THEY'RE USUALLY IT'S USUALLY ONE YEAR STANDARD. PARTS AND LABOUR, AND THEN SOMETIMES DIFFERENT ITEMS WILL HAVE AN EXTEND GUARANTEE ON THEM SO FREQUENTLY, ELECTRICS WILL HAVE AN EXTRA COUPLE OF YEARS, WASHING MACHINES USUALLY THERE'S A GUARANTEE OF ABOUT FIVE YEARS ON THE TRANSMISSION. THE ON REFRIGERATORS, THE STANDARD RECENTLY HAS BEEN ABOUT TEN YEARS ON THE COMPRESS ER, BUT I THINK I'VE HEARD THAT'S PROBABLY GOING TO BE GOING BACK DOWN TO FIVE YEARS. JUST TO SELL. THEY ONLY GUARANTEE THINGS THAT SHOULD LAST THAT LONG ANYWAY. YEAH. JUST YOU KNOW, SELLING FEATURE.

Maureen says YOU DON'T LIKE EXTENDED WARRANTIES.

Steve says WELL THEY CUT INTO MY BUSINESS. YEAH. BUT, SO THAT'S THE CONFLICT OF INTEREST RIGHT OUT ON THE TABLE THERE. BUT BASICALLY, THEY MAKE A LOT OF MONEY SELLING SERVICE CONTRACTS. AND I'VE BEEN LESS THAN IMPRESSED WITH SOME OF THE COMPANIES WITH HOW THEY TREATED PEOPLE. I HAD ONE CUSTOMER WHO HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON HER FREEZER. YOU NEED A NEW COMPRESSOR. SHE SAYS THAT'S OKAY. IT'S TEN YEARS OLD. SHE SAYS I'VE JUST PUT A COMPRESSOR. HE'S GOING NO, WE WON'T PUT A COMPRESSOR IN IT. SHE SAID I'VE PAID OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS IN CONFIDENCE CONTRACTS. HE'S GOING BILLION, WE DON'T PUT COMPRESSORS IN 10-YEAR-OLD FREEZERS, IT'S NOT WORTH IT. WHEN SHE COMPLAINED THEY REFUNDED HER ONE YEAR'S PREMIUM. IF YOU CAN IMAGINE LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY DOING THAT. WELL, HOW OLD WAS YOUR HUSBAND WHEN HE DIED? WELL, HE WAS OLD. WE'LL GIVE YOU ONE YEAR'S PREMIUM BACK BUT WE'RE NOT GOING TO PAY THE BENEFIT. SO IT WAS LIKE SO READ THE FINE PRINT. BECAUSE IF IT SAYS IT'S UP TO THEM WHETHER THEY'RE GOING TO FIX IT OR NOT, THEY SHOULD AT LEAST HAVE SAID WE'LL BUY YOU A NEW FREEZER OR WE'LL GIVE YOU, I MEAN TO HAVE SNAENT MUCH MONEY AND NOT GET IT REPAIRED SO. THE OTHER THING WITH SOMETHING LIKE A FREEZER YOU BELIEVE YOU'VE GOT A FIVE FIVE--YEAR GUARANTEE ON IT ANYWAY. AFTER THAT, YOU KNOW IF IT'S WORKED FOR FIVE YEARS THE CHANCES OF THE COMPRESSOR GOING, PROBABLY PRETTY SLIM AND SO, YOU KNOW YOU'LL PROBABLY GET ANOTHER 10 OR 15 YEARS OUT OF IT. WE HOPE.

Maureen says PETERS IN LONDON. HELLO.

The Caller says MY DAUGHTER HAS A RELATIVELY NEW WASHER CLOTHES WASHER, BOUGHT IT AT ONE OF THE MAJOR DEPARTMENT STORES AND IT'S ONE OF THE WELL KNOWN BRANDS, AND SHE HAS A PROBLEM THAT WHEN SHE GETS THE CLOTHES OUT AFTER SHE WASHES THEM IT'S FULL OF LIPT. DOESN'T TAKE THE LINT OUT AND DOESN'T USUALLY USE HER DRY , LIKES HANGING HER CLOTHE OUT ON THE LINE. ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT THAT?

Steve says THE GENERAL RULE IS THAT WASHING MACHINES DON'T MAKE LINT, LINTY CLOTHES MAKE LINT SO. SHE SHOULD BE MAKING SURE THAT SHE DOESN'T PUT IN OLD RAGS AND THINGS LIKE THAT, THAT GIVE UP A LOT OF LINT, OR SHE'S NOT MIXING DARK AND LIGHT ITEMS. SO IF YOU PUT IN A LIGHT COLOURED SWEATSHIRT THAT WOULD CREATE A LOT OF LINT OR NEW TOWELS, MAKE SURE THAT YOU DON'T PUT A DARK ANYTHING DARK IN THERE WIT. BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO SHOW UP. GENERALLY SPEAKING WASHING MACHINES DO NOT AND NEVADA REALLY HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB OF FILTERING LINT. SO, A LOT OF MACHINES IF THEY HAVE ANY KIND OF LINT FILTER IN THEM, IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT REALLY DOES A SUPER JOB ANYWAY. THE DRIER IS WHAT TAKES MOST OF THE LINT OUT. SO, THERE'S NO THERE REALLY ISN'T, SHE WON'T GET MUCH SATISFACTION AND I CAN'T THINK OF A MACHINE, MAYBE THE OLD OLD GEs THEY USED TO HAVE ON AGITATER WITH A FILTER ON TOP OF IT AND ACTUALLY IS A RECIRCULATING PUMP AND SPRAY WATER RIGHT IN THERE. BUT OUT OF A LOAD OF CLOTHES YOU MIGHT GET A COUPLE OF SMALL PILLS, SMALLER THAN THE SIZE OF A DIME OF LINT. THEN YOU WOULD STILL PUT THOSE CLOTHES IN THE DRIER AND GET A FULL LINT SCREEN. SO, YOU KNOW. IF THAT WAS THE BEST FILTER I'VE SEEN.

Maureen says AID FILTER IN MY LAUNDRY TUB BECAUSE WE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH OUR BACKING UP. AND I AM SURPRISED HOW MUCH I TAKE OFF AFTER AESS SPECIAL LAY DARK LOAD WITH LOTS OF TOWELS AND JEANS OR, SOME I SCRAPE IT OFF AND YOU GET A BALL ABOUT THIS BIG. SO WHETHER THE WASHING MACHINE IS TAKING ANY LINT OUT JUST NOT SOME LIPT OR TAKE NOTHING LINT OUT.

Steve says WHAT HAPPENS IS JUST END UPSETING ON THE CLOTHES. WHAT THE AGITATER DOES IS IT'S MOVING THE CLOTHES AROUND, THE LINT PRODUCING CLOTHES OBVIOUSLY THE WASHER, IS HARVESTING THE LINT FROM THEM. BUT, THE ACTUAL FILTERING MECHANISM THAT THEY USE DOESN'T COME NEAR TO CATCHING THE STUFF. AND YOU COULD PUT THE CHEAP THING TO DO IS JUST A BIG NYLON LIKE ONE LEG OF A PAIR OF NYLONS AND THAT GIVES A NICE BIG AREA FOR THE WATER TO ESCAPE FROM BUT DOES A GOOD JOB CASH CATCHING THE LIPT.

Maureen says WHERE WOULD YOU PUT THAT.

Steve says ON THE END OF THE DRAIN HOSE. AND THE NYLON LEG FILLS UP IN A RATHER BIZARRE WAY WITH WITH WASH WATER BLUE CATCH ALL THE LINT AND IT'S A GREAT WAY TO USE NYLONS AND STUFF LIKE THAT.

Maureen says THANKS PETER.

Maureen reads from the laptop and says ANNA SAYS I HAVE AN 18-YEAR-OLD FRIDGE RECENTLY IT STARTED TO LEAK AND RUST. BELOW THE CRISPER COMPARTMENT. WHAT'S WRONG WIT. CAN IT BE FIXED OR TIME FOR A NEW ONE?
DOESN'T SAY WHAT KIND.

Steve says AN OLD FROST-FREE REFRIGERATORS HAVE DRAIN SYSTEMS IN THEM SORT OF A SYSTEM IN A HOUSE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT AND FOOD GETS IN THERE AND PLUGS IT UP. WHAT WE NORMALLY DO IS TAKEN THAT DRAIN SYSTEM APART AND PLUSH IT OUT. AND ONCE THAT'S DONE, THE FRIDGE USUALLY STARTS RUNNING DRY AGAIN. SO, IF SHE CAN FIGURE OUT WHERE THAT DRAIN SYSTEM IS, I EYES A TURKEY BASTER TO FLUSH IT OUT. SOMETIMES YOU KNOW A HOSE WILL COME OFF THE BACK OF THE FRIDGE BUT IF SHE'S GETTING WATER INSIDE, USUALLY THE ZRAN PLUGGED UP INSIDE THE FRINL.

Maureen says OKAY, HI, KIM.

The Caller says GOOD AFTERNOON.
HELLO, I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS, THE FIRST SOMEONE ON A WHITE WESTINGHOUSE WASHER. AND WHAT'S HAPPENING IS I'M GETTING BLUE MARKS. IT'S BEEN A VERY GOOD WASHER FOR US. WE STARTED GETTING THESE BLUE MARKS ON OUR CLOTHES AND IT'S NOT ON ALL THE CLOTHES IN THE WASH. JUST IN SOME OF THEM.

Steve says WILL THEY WASH OFF. WILL IT WASH OUT.

The Caller says AFTER A MULTIPLE, SOME OF THEM FADE. SOMETIMES THEY HAVE TO USE BLAECH OR SPRAY DREAMS, BUT NOT ALWAYS DO THEY COME OUT.

Steve says OKAY, DO YOU USE A LIQUID FABRIC SOFTENER.

The Caller says YES, IDY LEWDED ULTRA DOWNEY, BUT I HAVE SOFT WATER SO I USED VERY LITTLE AND I DILUTE IT QUITE WELL.

Steve says DO YOU USE THE DOWNEY BALL OR USE THE DISPENSER.

The Caller says THE DISPENSER.

Steve says I THINK THE DISPENSER OUT AND TRY USING THE DOWNEY BALL. I HAVE FORBIDDEN THE FABRIC SOFTENER DISPENSER AT OUR HOME. OH, IT'S GROSS. YEAH. SO THE DOWNEY BALL SEEMS TO BE A REALLY GOOD WAY, IT'S A COMPROMISE IN OUR HOUSE BECAUSE WHAT HAPPENS IS THE FABRIC SOFTENER GETS LIKE CHEESE AND THEN PIECES BREAK OFF. AND IT GETS GROUND RIGHT INTO THE CLOTHES. THE NEXT TIME YOU FIND SOME YOU SHOULD FIND UNDER THE YOU KNOW THE KIT WITH SOME LIQUID DISH SOAP JUST WHAT YOU WOULD USE FOR WASHING YOUR TURNS AND WORK IT IN. AND SEE IF BY WORKING ON ONE SPOT YOU CAN GET TO IT WASH OUT BECAUSE YOU USUALLY FABRIC SOFTENER WILL WASH OUT, AND OIL AND TRANSMISSIONS IS USUALLY BLACK OR GREEN. NOT BLUE. SO, IT'S UNLIKELY THAT IT'S OIL AND IF IT WILL WASH OUT IT'S USUALLY FABRIC OFTENER. THE INSIDE OF YOUR TRIER DRUM ALL BLUE.

The Caller says NO, I HAVEN'T NOTICE.

Steve says IF IT'S A DARK LINER YOU MAY NOT NOTICE BUT THE INSIDE OF MY DRIER IS BLUE AND IT'S ALL FROM THE LIQUID FABRIC SOFTENER. TRY THE DOWNEY BALL THAT MIGHT WORK.

Maureen says THANKS, KIM. PLUG CERTAIN TYPES OF SOFTENER.

Steve says IT'S THE ONLY BALL I KNOW. SORRY

Maureen says HI, GUS.

The Caller says HI, I GIST BOUGHT A HOUSE AND I'M GOING TO BE MOVING I'M GOING TO BUY A STACKABLE WASHER-DRIER.

Maureen says THAT'S WHAT I WANT FOR THE COTTAGE. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THEM.

The Caller says THEY COME IN FULL SIZE RIGHT? AND THE GAS ONES TO THEY NEED SPECIAL VENTING? IN ORDER TO OR LIKE WHEN THEY DO IT BECAUSE I KNOW THERE'S A GAS CONNECTION THERE.

Steve says IT NEEDS TO JUST BE REALLY GOOD VENTING. SO YOU WOULD WANT THE METAL VENTING LIKE WHATEVER, WHATEVER CONTRACTOR HOOKS IT UP FOR YOU SOUB AWARE OF THAT AND BE ABLE TO DO A PROPER JOB ON IT.

Maureen says WHAT DO YOU THINK OF stackables?

Steve says I THINK THEY'RE GREAT. AGAIN, THEY'RE MORE TIME CONSUMING TO WORK ON, USUALLY. BUT THEY'RE A GREAT SOLUTION, GO VERTICAL IF YOU CAN'T GO HORIZONTAL, SO I ALWAYS SAY IF YOU CAN GET TWO SEPARATE MACHINES IF YOU'VE GOT THE ROOM, THAT'S THE BEST WAY TO GO. IF THE STACKERS THE ONLY ONE THAT WORKFORCE YOU, THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT CHOICES IN THEM AND THEY'RE JUST MORE TIME CONSUMING TO WORK ON USUAL I.

Maureen says ONLY 30 SECOND I WAS AT ONE OF THE TORONTO HOME SHOWS AN SAW THIS WASHING MACHINE THAT HAD ALL THESE DIFFERENT BUTTONS ON IT LIKE JEANS, TOWELS. ANYTHING.

Steve says IT'S A CHALLENGE.

Maureen says ANYTHING TO THAT?

Steve says SELLING FEATURE REALLY. I MEAN, THERE ISN'T THAT MUCH OF A VARIETY, BUT YOU KNOW USING ELECTRICS, THEY CAN DO YOU KNOW START IT OUT WARM, AND MAKE IT HOT LATER ON, AND DO ALL KINDS OF FANCY THINGS. GO SIMPLE. I MEAN IT'S DIRTY CLOTHES, I MINE IT'S NOT YOU KNOW NOT THAT BIG A DEAL.

Maureen says ALL RIGHT. THANKS. IT WAS A GOOD DEAL HAVING YOU HERE TODAY.

Steve says THANKS, MY PLEASURE.

Maureen says STEVE BRANNAN, YOU CAN REACH AT HIM BRANNAN APPLIANCE REPAIR...
