Transcript: Michael Adams on his book American Backlash | May 06, 2006

A slate appears with the caption "American Backlash: The Untold Story of Social Change in the United States, by Michael Adams."

Michael Adams stands next to a lectern in front of an audience. He is in his late fifties, clean-shaven and with short curly graying hair. He wears a beige suit, blue shirt and a patterned tie.

He says ORIGINALLY
THIS "AMERICAN BACKLASH" BOOK
WAS ACTUALLY SUPPOSED TO BE
WRITTEN ABOUT THREE OR FOUR
YEARS AGO.
AND WE HAD SURVEYED AMERICANS
IN 1992, 1996 AND THE YEAR
2000, AND SPENT THE SUMMER OF
2000 OR THE SUMMER OF 2001
WORKING ON THE DATA.
YOU KNOW, ADDING IT UP AND
DOING ALL OUR FANCY ANALYSES
AND SO ON.
OR AS WE SAY TORTURING IT UNTIL
IT WOULD TELL THE TRUTH.
[All laugh]
AND AH, AND
WE HAD ACTUALLY SCHEDULED A
MEETING TO DISCUSS THIS, THIS
BOOK ABOUT THE UNITED STATES
THAT WE WERE GOING TO PREPARE,
THAT MEETING WAS SCHEDULED FOR
THE MORNING OF SEPTEMBER 11TH,
2001.
[Some murmur]
AND WE WERE
ALL SHOCKED.
NOBODY WORKED THAT DAY OF
COURSE.
WE WERE ALL UPSET.
SOME OF US HUNG AROUND THE
OFFICE.
A LOT OF US JUST WENT HOME.
TWO OR THREE WEEKS LATER AFTER
KIND OF RECOVERING, WE DEBATED
WHETHER OR NOT WE ACTUALLY WERE
GOING TO WRITE A BOOK ABOUT THE
EVOLUTION OF SOCIAL VALUES FROM
THE PERSPECTIVE OF A, A
DETACHED, IRONIC, CANADIAN AT A
TIME WHEN IT WAS QUITE APPARENT
THAT AMERICANS WERE LOOKING FOR
SUPPORT.
AND CERTAINLY NOT A KIND OF
ILLUMINATION THAT I THOUGHT I'D
BE DISPENSING.
SO WE SUSPENDED THAT PROJECT
AND I RETURNED HOME,
PSYCHICALLY TO THEN COMPARE
CANADIAN AND AMERICAN SOCIAL
VALUES AND THAT LED US ON THIS
MAGNIFICENT JOURNEY TO FIND
OVERLAPS IN MANY AREAS OF
VALUES AND DIVERGENCES.

An image of the book "Fire and Ice" by Michael Adams pops up. Portions of the American and Canadian flags illustrate the cover.

Michael says UNANTICIPATED DIVERGENCES IN
OTHER AREAS THAT LED TO THIS,
THE "FIRE AND ICE" BOOK, WHICH
IS, IT'S, IT'S, IT'S JUST BEEN
GREAT GOING ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
AND INDEED TO OTHER COUNTRIES
TALKING ABOUT THE DIVERGENCES
BETWEEN CANADA AND THE UNITED
STATES.
WELL, WE THEN DO THE 2004
SURVEY AND AMERICA HAS EVOLVED.
WE THINK THEY MAYBE READY FOR,
I MEAN THEY'VE BEEN EXPOSED TO
RICK MERCER SO MAYBE I COULD BE
THE NEXT...
[Audience laughs]

An image of the book "American Backlash. The untold story of social change in the United States" pops up. A lock with the American flag and a key next to it illustrate the cover.

Michael says THE NEXT
CANADIAN THEY HEAR FROM.
AND SO WE HAVE PRODUCED THIS
"AMERICAN BACKLASH" BOOK.
SO TO BE PART OF THIS LECTURE
SERIES, TO BE ON THE TVONTARIO
IS A GREAT, IT'S A GREAT THING
FOR ME.
AND WRITING A BOOK WITH MY
COLLEAGUES, ONE OF WHOM AMY
LANGSTAFF WAS HERE TODAY AND
ABE JAMIESON, THESE ARE GREAT
PRIVELEGES TO BE ABLE TO DO
THIS.
BEING IN BUSINESS FOR 25 OR 30
YEARS.
AND I'M NOT GOOD ENOUGH IN GOLF
TO GET ON THE SENIOR TOUR, SO
WHAT AM I GONNA DO WITH MY
LIFE?
I'VE GOT TO GET OUT OF THAT
HOUSE.
I COME TO THE OFFICE AND THEY
SUPPORT ME.
I, I APPOINTED MYSELF PROFESSOR
AMERICUS AT ENVIRONICS
UNIVERSITY.
[Audience laughs]
AND, AND MY
MOTTO IS DO NO HARM.
[Audience laughs]

A caption reads "Michael Adams. Environics Research Group."

The caption changes to "American Backlash: The Untold Story of Social Change in the United States. University of Toronto. March 10, 2006."

Michael says WHEN I SAID
THAT ONE TIME I WAS GONNA MAKE
A COMMENT ABOUT ONE OF OUR
CLIENTS IN ONE OF MY BOOKS AND
THE PERSON WHO WAS IN CHARGE
SAID DON'T WORRY MICHAEL, THEY
DON'T READ SO, AH.
[Audience laughing]
I USED TO
NAME THE CLIENT.
BUT NOT AGAIN.
SO, UM, SO NOW THIS, THIS DATA
GIVES US A CHANCE TO REFLECT ON
THE MEANING.
OUR CLIENTS
USUALLY SPEND A LOT OF MONEY ON
OUR RESEARCH.
THIS IS, SOME REPORT TO THE
PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY TAKE PART
IN THESE CRAZY SURVEYS WE DO,
AND MAYBE A LITTLE BIT OF A
FEEDBACK TO THE CANADIANS AND
TO THE AMERICANS WHAT WE
LEARNED.
SO, "AMERICAN BACKLASH, THE
UNTOLD, THE HERETOFORE, UNTOLD
STORY OF CHANGE IN THE UNITED
STATES," BY A SYY, DEFERENTIAL
AND OCCASIONALLY IRONIC
CANADIAN.

Michael reads a question that appears on a slide.

He says WHAT IS THE FASTEST-GROWING
TREND IN AMERICA SINCE 1992,
ACCORDING TO ENVIRONICS.
IS IT RELIGIOSITY, GROWING
RELIGIOSITY IN AMERICA?
LOTS OF EVIDENCE OF THAT,
OSTENTATIOUS RELIGIOSITY, WE
SEE SOUTH OF THE BORDER.
PATRIOTISM?
YOU WOULD THINK THIS MIGHT BE
SOMETHING THAT WOULD RESULT
FROM 911.
A FEAR OF TERRORISM?
IS THIS THE LARGEST TREND?
AND OF COURSE I SET THAT UP AS
A STRAWBAND, BECAUSE IT'S NONE
OF THE ABOVE.
IT IS A GROWING NORMALIZATION
TO VIOLENCE IN LIFE.
HERE'S SOME EVIDENCE.
WE HAVE HUNDREDS OF QUESTIONS
THAT WE AND STATEMENTS WE PUT
BEFORE PEOPLE, TO WHICH THEY
ARE ASKED TO AGREE OR DISAGREE
STRONGLY OR SOMEWHAT.
THE USUAL THING THAT POLLSTERS
DO, FORCING YOU INTO THEIR
CATEGORIES SO THEY CAN ADD UP
AND MANIPULATE THE DATA.
AND ONE OF THE ITEMS THAT WE
PUT BEFORE PEOPLE IS A LITTLE
VIOLENT BEHAVIOUR RELIEVES
TENSION.
IT'S NO BIG DEAL.
AND THEN YOU'RE ASKED TO AGREE
OR DISAGREE WITH THIS.

A slide shows a bar chart and the caption "A little violent behaviour relieves tension. United States. Agree 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004."

Michael says IN 1992, 15 PERCENT
OF AMERICANS, A REPRESENTATIVE
SAMPLE OF AMERICANS AGED 15 AND
OVER SAID YEAH, VIOLENCE IS
NORMAL IN EVERY DAY LIFE.
IT'S NO BIG DEAL.
THEN IT WENT UP TO 27, 31 AND
IT'S AT 32 PERCENT.
SO A THIRD OF AMERICANS
BELIEVING THAT VIOLENCE IS
NORMAL IN EVERY DAY LIFE.
IT'S NO BIG DEAL.
AND AMONG YOUNG MEN AGED 15 TO
24, IT'S 55 PERCENT THAT THINK
VIOLENCE IS NORMAL IN EVERY DAY
LIFE.
WELL THAT'S
KIND OF A SOFT MEASURE.
A LITTLE HARDER ONE IS AN
ORIENTATION TO VIOLENCE THAT,
THAT SOME OF US COULD CONFRONT
SOME TIME.
IT'S ACCEPTABLE TO USE PHYSICAL
FORCE TO GET WHAT YOU WANT.
THE IMPORTANT THING IN THIS
STATEMENT IS, THE IMPORTANT
THING IS TO GET WHAT YOU WANT.
THAT'S WHAT THE STATEMENT IS.
SO IN 1992, NEARLY...

Another slide shows a bar chart and the caption "It is acceptable to use physical force to get what you want."

Michael says TEN PERCENT
OF CANADIANS TOLD US THAT TO
USE PHYSICAL FORCE TO GET WHAT
YOU WANT WAS OKAY.
THEN 17, 24, AND THEN 23, DOWN
ONE POINT.
SO ABOUT A QUARTER OF AMERICANS
AGED 15 AND OVER BELIEVE,
BELIEVE THAT THE USE OF
PHYSICAL FORCE TO GET WHAT YOU
WANT IS OKAY.
AMONG YOUNG MEN AGED 15 TO 24,
IT'S NEARLY FOUR IN TEN WHO
BELIEVE...
THAT TO USE
PHYSICAL FORCE TO GET WHAT YOU
WANT IS OKAY.
SO THAT'S JUST A LITTLE BIT OF
A TEASER IN A SENSE OF
TRACKING, AND SOME RATHER
REMARKABLE CHANGES AND
STATISTICALLY, SIGNIFICANT
CHANGES.
LET ME SEND YOU TO ENVIRONICS
UNIVERSITY FOR A FEW MINUTES
AND TELL YOU HOW WE DO WHAT WE
DO.
WE ARE POLLSTERS BUT AND
POLLSTERS OF COURSE ASK YOU
WHAT YOU THINK OF THE LIBERALS
OR THE CONSERVATIVES OR HARPER
OR PAUL MARTIN AND HOW YOU'RE
GONNA VOTE AND SO ON.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT PUBLIC
POLICY ISSUES AND SO ON?
UM, THAT'S IMPORTANT TO US.
IT'S BEEN IMPORTANT SINCE 1970.
BUT WE FOUND A LOT OF
VOLATILITY.
PEOPLE WEREN'T VOTING THE WAY
THAT THEIR PARENTS AND
GRANDPARENTS HAD VOTED.
THEY WEREN'T VOTING THE WAY
THAT THEY EVEN SAID THEY WOULD
VOTE AT THE OUTSET OF THE
CAMPAIGN.
THEY WERE USING INFORMATION.
THEY WEREN'T VOTING
IDEOLOGICALLY.
WE CALL IT VOLATILITY.
AND AT ONE THANKSGIVING DINNER
I REMEMBER COMING TO MY PARENTS
PLACE AND MY MOM SAID MICHAEL
IF YOU ONCE MORE TELL ME THAT
THE POLLS ARE VOLATILE.
I, I, THERE MUST BE SOMETHING
DEEPER GOING ON.
WHY ARE PEOPLE SWITCHING
BRANDS?
WHY ARE YOUNG, WHY ARE SONS
SAYING I WOULDN'T BE CAUGHT
DEAD IN A CAR THAT DAD DROVE
AROUND IN THE MID-50S AND SO
ON.
WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS
CULTURE?
AND THAT'S AGAIN THE PART OF
WHAT INSPIRES ME TO DO, TO DO
THESE BOOKS AND TO DO THIS
RESEARCH.
SO WHAT WE'RE REALLY TRYING TO
DO IS TO GET DEEPER THEN INTO
THE VALUES, BECAUSE VALUES USED
TO BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED.
JUDEO-CHRISTIAN MORAL CODE,
PROTESTANT ETHIC, DEFERRED
GRATIFICATION, ALL THE THINGS
WE GREW UP WITH.
THE THING IS THAT THOSE STARTED
TO CHANGE.
SO TO UNDERSTAND THEN EVOLVING
SOCIAL VALUES, WE WANT TO DIG
INTO THE MINDSETS, THE
MOTIVIATIONS.
WHAT'S GETTING YOU OUT OF BED
IN THE MORNING?
WHAT HAVE YOU TRIED TO ACHIEVE
IN YOUR LIFE, AS A CITIZEN, AS
A CONSUMER, AS AN EMPLOYEE, AS
A SPIRITUAL BEING?
WHAT IS IT THAT'S MOTIVATING
YOU?
BECAUSE IF WE THINK WE CAN
UNDERSTAND THAT THEN WE CAN
UNDERSTAND BEHAVIOUR, OR WE CAN
ANTIPICATE BEHAVIOUR THAT IS
GROWING OR DECLINING IN OUR
CULTURE.
WE USE A
LARGE BATTERY, I MENTIONED TWO
OR 300.
THERE'S PROBABLY EVEN MORE THEN
THAT NOW.
SO TWO, THREE OR FOUR QUESTIONS
RANDOMLY PLACED IN THE QUESTION
AREA.
YOU REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT
WE'RE AFTER AT ALL.
IT'S LIKE
DOING A PERSONALITY TEST OR A
MYERS-BRIGGS OR SOMETHING.
WE JUST ASK YOU TO TRY TO
ANSWER HONESTLY.
THERE'S A SHORT FORM, WHICH YOU
CAN GET ON THE, ON THE WEB IF
YOU WANT, 20 OR 30 QUESTIONS
AND UM, AND WE PUT YOU ONTO A
SOCIO-CULTURAL MAP AND ALL OF
THAT SORT OF THING.
SO IT CAN BE A LOT OF FUN.
IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHERE YOU ARE
ON THE MAP, GO BACK AND CHANGE
YOUR ANSWERS.
WE'RE FLEXIBLE.
[Audience laughing]
AND WE'RE
TRACKING WELL, OVER 100 SOCIAL
TRENDS.
NOW THIS, THIS STUDY THEN "THE
AMERICAN BACKLASH" IS BASED ON
OVER 8,000 INTERVIEWS WITH
AMERICANS 15 AND OVER.
AND AS I SAID 92, 96, 2000,
2004, YOU ALL KNOW THAT THOSE
ARE QUADRENNIAL PRESIDENTIAL
ELECTION YEARS.
WE DO THEM IN THE SUMMER.
OF COURSE WE CAN NEVER ADD UP
THE NUMBERS QUICKLY ENOUGH TO
ACTUALLY WHO'S GOING TO, WHO'S
GOING TO WIN THE ELECTION.
WE'RE MORE, WE JUST TRY TO, WE
JUST TAKE THAT BECAUSE IT'S
KIND OF AN INTERESTING TIME TO
SURVEY AMERICANS, AND WE DO ASK
POLITICAL QUESTIONS AS YOU'LL
SEE IN A MINUTE.
AND THIS WORK, WE DESIGN IT BUT
AND WE EXECUTE THIS WORK IN
CANADA.
BUT IN THE UNITED STATES WE USE
THE ROPER ORGANIZATION, WHICH
OF COURSE ROPER, TOGETHER WITH
GALLUP STARTED IT ALL UP IN THE
1920S AND 30S IN THE U.S.
SO, NORMALLY WHEN YOU THINK
ABOUT VALUES, YOU THINK OF YOU
KNOW ETHICAL VALUES.
IF SOMEBODY, IF SOMEBODY STEALS
FROM YOU, YOU SAY THEY HAVE NO
VALUES.
ACTUALLY THEY DO HAVE VALUES,
IT'S JUST THAT THEIR VALUES AND
YOUR VALUES ARE IN CONFLICT.
NOT ALL VALUES ARE ETHICAL
VALUES OR RELIGIOUS VALUES OR
FAMILY VALUES, AND AS YOU CAN
SEE HERE I MEAN WE'VE GOT...

Another slide appears with the caption "Beyond Moral Values: Some examples of the 117 values we track" and a list of values such as acceptance of violence, everyday ethics, patriarchy and question of authority.

Michael says QUITE A
RANGE, AN INTERESTING RANGE OF
VALUES.
WE GO FROM A TO X.
WE'RE LOOKING FOR A, A ZED OR A
ZEE, DEPENDING ON WHAT SIDE OF
THE BORDER.
AND WE HAVE HAD SOME, WE HAD
ZODIAC I THINK RECOMMENDED.
BUT WE MAY, WE MAY PUT IT IN
FOR OUR SURVEYS IN ARIZONA.
[Audience laughs]
AH, SO WE
HAVE ACCEPTANCE OF VIOLENCE AND
DEATH...
ANONMIE, NO
CONNECT TO THE SOCIETY.
AIMLESSNESS, NO GOALS IN LIFE.
AH, JUST
DESERTS AND SO ON.
REALLY YOU KNOW SEXUAL
PERMISSIVENSS AND XENOPHOBIA,
GIVING YOU AN IDEA OF, OF THE
RANGE.
AGAIN, THERE ARE 117...
THAT WE ARE
TRACKING.
JUST DESERTS IS INTERESTING.
IT IS SPELLED CORRECTLY HERE.
I'LL GO INTO THAT LATER FOR
THOSE WHO ARE INTO ENTOMOLOGY
AND CORRECT SPELLINGS.

Another slide shows pictures of Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stuart and an astronaut and the caption "Examples of Social Values. Just Deserts."

Michael says ANYWAYS, IT'S JUST DESERTS IS
CONFIDENCE THAT IN THE END
PEOPLE GET WHAT THEY DESERVE.
LIKE YOU KNOW, IF YOU GET, IF
YOU GET, IF YOU'RE RICH, IF YOU
GET RICH YOU DESERVE THAT.
IF YOU GET BLOWN AWAY, YOU
PROBABLY DESERVE THAT.
AND THE, AND THE ITEMS THAT WE
USED YOU KNOW PEOPLE, YOU KNOW
GET WHAT THEY WANT, WHAT
THEY'RE ENTITLED TO HAVE.
PEOPLE GET WHAT THEY DESERVE.
REWARDS AND
PUNISHMENTS ARE FAIRLY GIVEN IN
LIFE AND SO ON, ARE EXAMPLES.
THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS THAT
ARE IN THE QUESTIONNAIRE.
AGAIN, NOT ALL TOGETHER, BUT IN
DIFFERENT PLACES STATISTICALLY
WE PULL THEM TOGETHER TO CREATE
THAT ONE VALUE, JUST DESERTS.

Another slide appears with the caption "Personal values" and pictures of a graduate, a mountain climber and an Olympic runner.

Michael says PERSONAL CHALLENGE, THIS IS AN,
AN INTERESTING VALUE.
THIS IS ONE
WHERE YOU SET YOURSELF GOALS.
WHATEVER IT IS, YOU KNOW, TODAY
I'M GONNA GET ON MY TREADMILL
AND LOSE 300 CALORIES IF IT
KILLS ME.
OF COURSE IF IT KILLS YOU, YOU
WILL LOSE 300 CALORIES.
YOU'LL LOSE A LOT MORE THEN
THAT.
[Audience laughs]
ANYWAY, SO
AND HERE'S AGAIN SOME OF THE
ITEMS.
I DO SOME, SOMETHING SIMPLY TO
PROVE MYSELF THAT I'M ABLE.
WHEN I REALLY WANT TO DO
SOMETHING I ALWAYS DO IT.
AND ONCE I
START SOMETHING I STICK WITH IT
TILL I'M SATISFIED WITH THE
RESULTS.
THOSE ARE EXAMPLES AGAIN TWO OF
THOSE 117.
NOW THIS THE MAP, THE SOCIO-
CULTURAL MAP THAT PUTS ALL 117
ON.

Another slide appears with the caption "Environics Social Values Monitor: United States" and a two axis chart with the words "Authority," "Fulfillment," "Individuality" and "Survival" on each extreme and many words inside each quadrant.

Michael says SO ARE YOU
ALL SQUINTING AND, AND WELL,
DON'T GO TO THE OPTOMETRIST.
YOU DON'T NEED AN EYE TEST.
BUT THAT'S WHAT THE THING LOOKS
LIKE WHEN WE PUT ALL THE VALUES
ON THE MAP AND AH, AND, AND
HAVE TO MAKE SENSE OF IT.
BUT TO SIMPLIFY IT A BIT, WHAT
WE'RE DOING IS GIVING YOU SOME
SELECTIVE VALUES TO SHOW YOU
HOW WE LABEL, HOW WE, HOW WE
DEFINE THE MAP AND, AND THEN
HOW WE LATER LABEL THE
QUADRANTS, WHICH I'LL TAKE YOU
THROUGH.
BUT AT THE TOP OF THE MAP WE
HAVE PEOPLE WHO WERE ORIENTED
TO, TO TRADITIONAL AUTHORITY.
SO TRADITIONAL FAMILY.
MOM AND DAD, 2.5 KIDS AND SO
ON.
OBEDIENCE TO AUTHORITY,
PROPRIETY, WEAR THE RIGHT
CLOTHES FOR THE RIGHT OCCASION.
UM, AMERICAN
ENTITLEMENT.
AMERICA IS ENTITLED TO WHATEVER
IT CAN TAKE FROM THIS PLANET,
BECAUSE THAT'S AMERICA.
PATRIARCHY, OF COURSE WE'LL BE
LOOKING AT THAT A LITTLE BIT
LATER.
AMERICAN DREAM.
YOU ALL KNOW
THAT.
RAGS TO RICHES.
LOG CABIN TO THE WHITE HOUSE.
DESIGN THE MAP WE HAVE SEXUAL
PERMISSIVE, PENCHANT FOR RISK,
EQUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUTH.
THREATING
YOUNG PEOPLE AS ADULTS, AS
EARLY AS POSSIBLE.
ADAM AND STEVE, AS WELL AS ADAM
AND EVE OVER HERE, QUESTIONING
AUTHORITY.
FLEXIBLE GENDER IDENTITY.
THIS IS, THIS IS UNDOUBTEDLY, I
DON'T KNOW.
I LIKE PATRIARCHY, BUT I DO
LIKE THIS ONE TOO, BECAUSE IT'S
A GREAT, POST-MODERN VALUE,
FLEXIBLE GENDER IDENTITY.
THIS IS WOMEN SAYING YES, I CAN
BE FEMININE, SEXY AND NURTURING
AND SO ON.
BUT ALSO I CAN HAVE PERSONALITY
TRAITS THAT USED TO BE
ASSOCIATED WITH BEING A MAN.
I CAN SAY WHAT I THINK.
[Cheers-Applause]
IN FACT I CAN
THINK.
[Audience laughing]
I, I, I CAN,
I CAN TAKE THE LEAD.
YOU KNOW, MAYBE I DON'T SIT IN
THE MEETING WORRYING...
ALL THE TIME
ABOUT YOU KNOW WHO'S GONNA
CLEAN UP THE ROOM AFTERWARDS.
MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE OTHER
THINGS IN MY MIND, OR, OR
WORRYING IF SOME OF THE BOYS
FEELINGS ARE HURT.
AND I'M GONNA HAVE TO TAKE THEM
ASIDE AND KIND OF PAT THEM ON
THE HAND AFTERWARDS AND SO ON.
OF COURSE THERE'S MEN WHO ALSO
HAVE THIS FLEXIBLE GENDER
IDENTITY AND THESE ARE GUYS
WHO, WELL, LET'S SAY WANT TO
PLAY A ROLE IN THE FAMILY AFTER
CONCEPTION.
[Audience laughs]
THEY ARE,
THESE ARE THE FELLOWS THAT WANT
TO REINVENT THEIR RELATIONSHIPS
WITH THEIR SONS, COMPARED TO
WHAT THEY HAD WITH THEIR DADS.
THEY'D LIKE TO HAVE A
CONVERSATION BEFORE THE
FUNERAL.
[Audience laughing]
YOU KNOW WHEN
HE STANDS OVER AT ME AND SAYS,
YEAH, YEAH, YOU WERE RIGHT DAD.
YOU KNOW ITS, ITS JUST, CAUSE
SOMETIMES YOU DON'T EVEN HEAR
THAT.
YOU KNOW AND, AND, AND ONE OF
THE THINGS THAT I NOTICE, YOU
NOTICE AS A SOCIOLOGIST, YOU
SEE THESE SIGNALS, IS THAT THE
NUMBER OF GUYS AND EVEN MOMS
WHO ARE CALLING THEIR SONS BY
A, A, UBIQUITOUS NICKNAME,
WHICH IS BUDDY.
AND BUDDY IS FRIEND, RIGHT?
IT'S NOT I'M DAD AND OKAY, I'M
TELLING YOU THE FACTS OF LIFE.
YOU'RE 22, IT'S ABOUT TIME YOU,
YOU FOUND OUT.
ITS, ITS, ITS A RELATIONSHIP
THAT'S ONE, THAT'S FRIENDSHIP.
THAT'S GONNA BE BASED ON
OPENNESS AND SO ON.
MOTHERS WHO WANT TO REINVENT
THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR
DAUGHTERS, THINKING THAT
ACTUALLY IT COULD BE BUILT ON
MORE THEN GUILT.
AND, AND DADS WHO WANT TO YOU
KNOW BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH
THEIR SONS THAT'S BASED MORE ON
HETERO, OR HIERARCHY, YOU KNOW.
SO UM, I, I LOVE THIS TREND
BECAUSE IT'S YOU KNOW WOMEN ARE
ALLOWED TO LEAD.
MEN ARE ALLOWED TO CRY AND NOT
JUST WHEN WOMEN LEAD.
[Audience laughing]

says Michael Adams: SO THIS IS,
THIS IS, THIS IS A TREND, SEE
THIS IS GONNA BE A BIG ONE IN
OUR FUTURE.
ANYWAY I WON'T GO ON, ON ALL MY
TRENDS LIKE THAT.
BUT THAT'S ONE, THAT'S ONE I
REALLY LIKE.

says Michael Adams: AND SO THEN
WE HAVE THE EAST, WEST AXIS.
SO OVER HERE, ON THE
FULFILLMENT SIDE, YOU KNOW,
DISCRIMINATING CONSUMERISM,
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, GENDER
PARITY, INTROSPECTION, LOOKING
INSIDE.
EMPATHY, WHAT'S IT LIKE TO BE
SOMEBODY ELSE?
ECOLOGICAL CONCERNS,
SPONTANEITY, CREATIVITY AND SO
ON.
AT THE OTHER END OF THAT SECOND
AXIS IS A MORE OF AN
ORIENTATION TO LIFE.
IT'S A SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST.
A DARWINIST VISION OF THE
WORLD, IN WHICH YOU'VE GOT
XENOPHOBIA, SEXISM, FATALISM,
ECOLOGICAL FATALISM.
YOU KNOW THE EARTH WILL HEAL
ITSELF.
A FEW SPECIES HAVE TO GO DOWN
THE DRAIN.

says Michael Adams: THAT'S THE
WAY IT'S ALWAYS BEEN.
JUST DESERTS, CONSUMPTION,
APATHY, RAGE, ANOMIE,
ACCEPTANCE OF VIOLENCE.
SO THAT DEFINES THE, THE AXIS
ON THE MAP AND THAT GIVES US
OUR FOUR QUADRANTS.
AND THE QUADRANTS THEN ARE
PLACES WHERE PEOPLE WOULD FIND
THEMSELVES AND BE VERY SIMILAR
TO OTHER PEOPLE IN THAT
QUADRANT.
THE VALUES
WOULD HIGHLY CORRELATE.
THE PEOPLE THERE WOULD BE VERY
SIMILAR TO EACH OTHER.
THE UPPER LEFT THEN PEOPLE ARE
RELATED TO STATUS AND SECURITY.
THE UPPER RIGHT, AUTHENTICITY
AND RESPONSIBILITY.
THE LOWER RIGHT, IDEALISM AND
AUTONOMY.
AGAIN, YOU'VE GOT THE
FULFILLMENT AND THE INDIVIDUALLY
HELPING YOU DEFINE THAT.
AND THEN THE FINAL QUADRANT,
EXCLUSION AND INTENSITY.
AN EXAMPLE OF THE, OF THE
VALUES THAT YOU FIND IN THAT
QUADRANT, STATUS AND SECURITY,
AGAIN, AUTHORITY, SURVIVAL.
SO TRADITIONAL AUTHORITY.
BUT A SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST
MENTALITY.
PATRIARCHY'S OVER, THERE,
STATUS RECOGNITION, FATHER OF
THE FAMILY, MOTHER...
OR WHATEVER
YOUR STATUS IS IN THE FAMILY.
OR IN THE ARMY.
YOU KNOW YOU START OUT AS A
PRIVATE.
YOU MOVE UP TO CORPORAL.
YOU END UP AS A GENERAL, AND
YOU GOT MORE STARS AND STRIPES.
MORE PEOPLE
YOU CAN ORDER AROUND.
AH, BIGGER OFFICE, ETCETERA.
BRANDS, XENOPHOBIA...
TECHNOLOGICAL
ANXIETY, FEAR OF VIOLENCE, AND
AMERICAN ENTITLEMENT OVER IN
THAT QUADRANT.
PEOPLE IN
QUADRANTS HAVE ICONS.
THEY HAVE PEOPLE THEY ADMIRE.
THIS IS KIND OF A YOU KNOW...
[Audience laughing]

A slide shows pictures of John Wayne, Dick Cheney, Bill O’Reilly and Hillary Clinton.

Michael says TRADITIONAL
VALUES.
SO JOHN WAYNE.
THE GUY WHO CAN'T SHOOT
STRAIGHT OR...
[Audience laughing]
AND FAIR AND
BALANCED BILL O'REILLY.
AND THEN THESE PEOPLE ALSO HAD
PEOPLE THEY REALLY DON'T LIKE.
AND NUMBER
ONE PINUP GIRL ON THEIR HITLIST
IS THE JUNIOR SENATOR FROM NEW
YORK HILLARY CLINTON.
IN THE AUTHENTICITY OF
RESPONSIBILITY QUADRANT
TRADITIONAL VALUES BROUGHT
FULFILLMENT.
SO THESE WERE THE AMERICANS
THAT HAVE PLAYED BY THE
TRADITIONAL RULES.
THESE ARE GUYS WHO ACTUALLY
COUNT EVERY STROKE THAT THEY
HIT ON THE GOLF COURSE, AND
TERRIBLE PEOPLE TO PLAY WITH.
[Audience laughs]
AH, BILL
CLINTON WOULD NEVER GO NEAR
THEM.
SO YOU'VE GOT AUTHENTICITY,
RESPONSIBILITY, FAIRNESS,
RESPONSIBILITY AND WELL, BEING,
AS THEIR MENTAL POSTURE.
AND THESE ARE THE DUTIES,
RELIGIOSITY, EVERY DAY ETHICS,
GENDER PARITY, SPIRITUAL QUEST,
HOLISTIC HEALTH, PERSONAL
EXPRESSION.
WELL, WHO MIGHT THESE PEOPLE
ADMIRE?

Another slide shows pictures of Jesus Christ, Oprah Winfrey, Ronald Reagan and Shirley Maclaine.

Michael says WELL, JESUS CHRIST AS A
SUPERSTAR.
OPRAH THE QUEEN, IS CERTAINLY
ADMIRED BY PEOPLE.
RONALD
REAGAN, THE GIPPER, AND SHIRLEY
MACLAINE WHO'S CELEBRATING HER
500TH BIRTHDAY THIS YEAR...
[Audience laughing]
ALSO
ADMIRED BY, BY PEOPLE IN THIS
QUADRANT.
THEN WE HAVE THE LOWER RIGHT,
WE'VE GOT IDEALISM AND
AUTONOMY.
SO THIS IS
KIND OF THIS NEW, BABYBOOMER
GROUP.
THEY'RE, THEY'RE INTO
EXPLORATION.
THEY'RE INTO FLEXIBILITY.
PERSONAL CONTROL, QUESTIONING
AUTHORITY, THEY WERE TOLD TO
QUESTION AUTHORITY, AND THEY
SURE DID.
GLOBAL
CONSCIOUSNESS, FLEXIBLE
FAMILIES, FLEXIBLE GENDER
IDENTITY AND RELIGION A LA
CARTE.
THEY, THE
OLDER ONES ADMIRED JFK AS THEY
WERE GROWING UP.
THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IN
THE UNITED STATES, MICHAEL
MOORE.
[Audience laughs]
JON STEWART,
WHO DELIVERS THEM THE NEWS
EVERY NIGHT AROUND TEN O'CLOCK
AND, AND MY NOMINATION FOR THE
CANDIDATE OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY
WHO WILL DEFEAT ARNOLD
SCHWARZENEGGER IN THE NEXT
GUBANATORIAL RACE, LISA
SIMPSON.
[Audience laughing]
WE WENT FROM
A HUMAN TO ARNOLD.
IT'S NATURAL THAT WE'RE GONNA
GO FROM ARNIE TO LISA.
IT'LL BE JUST A GREAT, GREAT
RACE.
AND THEN FINALLY EXCLUSION AND
INTENSITY QUADRANT.
SO THIS IS A COOL QUADRANT AND
ONE YOU NEED TO PAY ATTENTION
TO.
THIS IS WHERE PEOPLE ARE
CONSTANTLY SEEKING STIMULUS AND
ATTENTION.
THEY NEED JOLTS.
DEFERRED GRATIFICATION IS
MAYBE, LATER TONIGHT.
THAT'S LONG TERM.
[Audience laughs]
CIVIC APATHY,
OSTENTATIOUS CONSUMPTION, RISK,
ANOMIE, AIMLESSNESS, SEXISM,
AND EVERY DAY RAGE.
WHO DO THESE PEOPLE ADMIRE?
WELL, 50 CENT, WHO WE ALLOWED
INTO THIS COUNTRY A LITTLE
WHILE AGO.
EMINEM, JERRY SPRINGER, YOU'RE
LIFE MAY BE SHIT, BUT THERE'S
WORSE.
[Audience laughing]
AND THEN
THERE'S MY FAVOURITE CANADIAN
WITH AMERICAN CONTENT, PAMELA
ANDERSON.
[Audience laughing]
SO, THAT'S
ENRONICS 010.
THAT'S THE MAP, OKAY.
SO NOW WE START TO GET INTO
SOME SUBSTANTIVE FINDINGS OF,
OF WHERE...
WHERE ARE
VARIOUS PEOPLE ON THIS MAP AND
WHAT IS THE DIRECTION OF SOCIAL
CHANGE?

Another slide appears with pictures of Bart Simpson, Bill Clinton playing the saxophone and the cast of Seinfeld and the caption "Context: 1992. 9-11: Fooling around."

Michael says WELL WE STARTED IN 1992 AND
THINGS WERE GETTING PRETTY
GOOD.
THEY ELECTED BILL CLINTON WITH
A SAXOPHONE TO THE PRESIDENCY.
WE, WE HAVE THE STOCK MARKET
GOING UP.
WE HAVE "THE
SIMPSONS."
WE'VE GOT THIS IS JERRY
SEINFELD AND HIS BUDDIES AND SO
ON.
THINGS WERE PRETTY GOOD IT
SEEMED ON THE SURFACE.
NOT EVERYBODY HOWEVER IN
AMERICA WAS DOING GREAT.
IN FACT THERE WAS SOME BAD
STUFF GOING ON IN AMERICA.
WACO, TEXAS, THE TERRORISTS
THAT WE FEARED PRIOR TO 911
WERE ACTUALLY THE INDIGENOUS
VARIETY.
THE MILITIAS UP IN MICHIGAN AND
OTHER PLACES AROUND AMERICA
AND, AND THEY WHAT DID THEY
WANT TO DO?
THEY WANTED TO BLOW UP FEDERAL
PROPERTY.
WE HAVEN'T SEEN A LOT OF THAT
SINCE 911.
WE HAVE THE TERRIBLE SHOOTINGS
IN, IN LITTLETON, COLORADO.
COLUM, COLUMBINE SCHOOL AND,
AND RACE RIOTS AFTER RODNEY
KING.
THE PARTY THEN STARTS TO WIND
DOWN.
WE'VE HAD A PRETTY GOOD DECADE,
BUT YOU'VE GOT, YOU KNOW THE
FEAR OF THE MILLENNIUM BUG.
AND WE HAVE GOT ALL SORTS OF
BAD THINGS GOING ON IN
COMPUTERS WITH SPAM, ETCETERA.
THE STOCK MARKET COLLAPSES.
EDMONTON'S CONTRIBUTION TO
AMERICAN CIVILIZATION, BERNIE
EVERS GETS HIMSELF INTO
TROUBLE.
BILL CLINTON IS DISGRACED AND
SO ON.
AND THEN OF COURSE THE TRAGIC
ATTACKS ON 911.
THIS LEADS TO A TIME WHERE
WE'RE, AMERICANS SINCE THAT
PERIOD 911, OUR, BACK TO
BASICS, BACK TO WORK.
YOU KNOW THERE ARE ALERTS, FEAR
AGAIN OF, OF, OF TERRORIST
ATTACKS.

Another slides show pictures of George W. Bush, soldiers in Afghanistan, Donald Trump, Doctor Phil and the cast of Law and Order with the caption "Context: Post 9-11: Back to Basics, Back to work."

Michael says INVASION OF AFGHANISTAN,
FOLLOWING, FOLLOWED BY THE
INVASION OF IRAQ.
SENATOR RICK SANTORUM WITH HIS
FOCUS ON THE FAMILY IN RESPONSE
TO HILLARY'S "IT TAKES A
VILLAGE."
AND POPULAR CULTURE REFLECTS
THIS SORT OF BACK TO BASICS.
IT'S A TOUGH WORLD.
WE GOT TO GET TO WORK.
IT'S VERY COMPETITIVE.
WE HAVE "LAW AND ORDER."
WE HAVE "THE APPRENTICE," AND
"SURVIVOR" SHOWS.
EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE YOU KNOW
IT'S A COMPETITION.
THUMBS UP OR THUMBS DOWN.
MARTHA SAYS YOU DON'T FIT IN.
SHE DOES IT HER WAY.
AND THEN THERE'S DOCTOR PHIL
REPLACING OPRAH, BECAUSE DOCTOR
PHIL WILL SHAKE HIS FINGER AT
YOU.
HE'LL SCOLD YOU IF YOU HAVE NOT
BEEN DOING WHAT YOU SHOULD BE
DOING.
SO AGAIN, BACK TO BASICS.
SO LET'S LOOK THEN AT THE
EVOLUTION.
I TALKED ABOUT THE RISE THEN IN
AN ORIENTATION TO VIOLENCE.
LET'S SEE WHAT HAS BEEN RISING
AND FALLING MOST DRAMATICALLY
THEN IN OUR VALUES RESEARCH
SINCE 1992.
WE SEE A DECLINE IN TRADITIONAL
VALUES, NOT AN INCREASE.
A DECLINE AMONG THE GENERAL
POPULATION...
IN
TRADITIONAL VALUES, IN AMERICA.
TRADITIONAL FAMILY IN DECLINE.
OBEDIENCE TO AUTHORITY,
RELIGIOSITY IN DECLINE IN THE
UNITED STATES.
THAT'S COUNTER-INTUITIVE.
NATIONAL PRIDE IN DECLINE.
DUTY, A SENSE OF DUTY IN
DECLINE.
THIS SEEMS
WEIRD.
A DECLINE IN THOSE VALUES OF
INTROSPECTION, EMPATHY, THE
SPIRITUAL QUEST, SENSUALISM,
PERSONAL EXPRESSION AND WHAT I
THINK IS MOST SIGNIFICANT AGAIN
OF AN INTROSPECTION...
LOOKING
INSIDE AND AN EMPATHY, WHAT'S
IT LIKE TO BE SOMEONE ELSE?
WHAT HAS BEEN INCREASING IN OUR
RESEARCH?
WELL, CONSUMPTION, OSTENTATIOUS
CONSUMPTION.
BUYING ON IMPULSE, CONFIDENCE
IN ADVERTISING.
AND
INTERESTINGLY SAVING ON
PRINCIPLE.
PEOPLE ARE SO UP TO THEIR
EYEBALLS IN DEBT, THEY'RE
SAYING I'VE GOT TO START
SAVING.
THEY SAY THIS TO THEMSELVES IN
THE SUV ON THE WAY TO THE
SHOPPING CENTER.
[Audience laughs]
SAY WE'VE GOT
TO START SAVING.
WE'VE GOT TO START SAVING.
YOU KNOW YOU
GO TO THE MORTGAGE BROKER.
OKAY, WE'RE GONNA MAX IT OUT,
RIGHT AND GET, YOU KNOW THE
MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF MONEY BECAUSE
IT IS DEDUCTIBLE.
WE GOT TO BUY STUFF.
THEN WE HAVE THRILL SEEKING.
PENCHANT FOR RISK, ATTRACTION
FOR CROWDS, INTUITION AND
IMPULSE.
AND THEN FINALLY THE DARKER
VALUES OF SEXISM, XENOPHOBIA,
ECOLOGICAL FATALISM, ACCEPTANCE
OF VIOLENCE.
IT MAKES FOR QUITE A PORTRAIT
OF EVOLUTION OF VALUES IN THE
UNITED STATES.
THE AVERAGE
AMERICAN IN 1992 IS JUST INSIDE
THE AUTHENTICITY AND
RESPONSIBILITY QUADRANT.
THE AVERAGE AMERICAN, THIS
TAKES ALL 2,500 PEOPLE IN THE
SAMPLE...
AND JUST PUTS
THEM ALL TOGETHER AS AN
AVERAGE, THE AVERAGE IN 2004 IS
JUST INSIDE THE EXCLUSION AND
INTENSITY QUADRANT.
MOVING DOWN AWAY FROM
AUTHORITY.
MOVING FROM FULFILLMENT TO A
SURVIVAL ORIENTATION.

A slide appears with the 4 quadrant graph and the caption "Gender: United States 2004."

Michael says MEN AND WOMEN IN AMERICA, UM,
WOMEN MORE, YOU KNOW THEY'RE
ABOUT THE SAME DISTANCE FROM
AUTHORITY AND INDIVIDUALITY
ABOUT -- WITH THE MAN.
WOMEN MORE ON THE FULFILLMENT
SIDE, MEN MORE ON THE SURVIVAL
SIDE.
WHAT ARE THE TOP VALUES OF
AMERICAN WOMEN?
WELL, INTROSPECTION AND
EMPATHY.
REVERSE SEXISM, WOMEN ARE
SUPERIOR TO MEN.
I GUESS THEY'VE BEEN READING
THE LITERATURE.
[Some laugh]

Michael reads a list of values that appear in a slide.

He says LOOK GOOD,
FEEL GOOD.
FEAR OF VIOLENCE.
SENSUALISM,
EVERY DAY ETHICS, FLEXIBLE
GENDER IDENTITY.
OF COURSE
THEY'RE IN THE WORKPLACE IN
VAST NUMBERS.
THEY HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE MALE
PERSONALITY TRAITS OR THEY WILL
NOT DO VERY WELL IN THE
WORKPLACE, MEANINGFUL MOMENTS.
YOUR MOM
CALLS, YOU TAKE THE CALL.
THE KIDS CALL, YOU TAKE THE
CALL AND YOU HAVE, AND, AND
YOU, AND YOU DELIVER JUST IN
TIME EMOTIONAL SUPPORT.
ADVERTISING AND STIMULUS AND
TIME STRESS.
TIME STRESS, IT MAKES A LOT OF
SENSE.
I MEAN THIS IS, THIS IS THE
PERSON WHO WE WROTE UP YOU KNOW
IS SHE'S, SHE WORKS.
THEY'VE GOT KIDS.
THEY'VE MOVED FROM DOWNTOWN TO
SUBURB TO EDGE, EDGE CITY,
LONG, COMMUTES.
SO YOU KNOW AT HOME SHE'S GOT
TO BE PAMELA ANDERSON TO HER
HUSBAND.
SHE'S GOT TO BE OPRAH TO HER
PARENTS AND HIS.
YOU'RE GOOD AT THIS DEAR.
WOULD YOU CALL MY MOTHER?
UM, WHAT ELSE DOES SHE HAVE TO
DO?
OF COURSE SHE'S GOT TO BE AT
THE OFFICE.
SHE'S GOT TO BE LIKE HILLARY
CLINTON.
YOU'VE GOT SOMEBODY WITH
INCREDIBLE RANGE OF ROLES, AND
UNLIKE HERE OF COURSE WITH SUCH
A TEPID, SOCIAL WELFARE STATE,
SHE'S GOT TO DO A LOT OF STUFF
THAT WE KIND OF HAVE SAID,
MAYBE THE GOVERNMENT COULD
HELP.
OR MAYBE NGOS COULD HELP A
LITTLE BIT AND SO ON.
THERE, YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN.
YOU'VE GOT TO DO ALL OF THAT.
IT ALSO EXPLAINS AND I'LL
EXPLAIN SOME OF THIS LATER, THE
ROLE OF RELIGION IN AMERICA.
AGAIN AS
REPLACING WHAT WE'VE DONE HERE
WITH THE SOCIAL WELFARE STATE.
WELL, LET'S LOOK AT THE BOYS.
WE'VE GOT THE, THE GIRLS ON
VENUS AND THE BOYS ARE ON MARS.
THEIR NUMBER ONE VALUE IS
ACCEPTANCE OF VIOLENCE.
PATRIARCHY, FATHER IS MASTER.
TRADITIONAL GENDER IDENTITY,
RIGHT, MEN, WOMEN, CHILDREN.
I DON'T KNOW.
WHAT'S BELOW THAT?
PARIOCHIALISM, SEXUAL
PERMISSIVENESS, THAT'S FOR MEN.
[All laugh]
SEXISM, MALE
SUPERIORITY, PENCHANT FOR RISK,
ENTHUSIASM FOR NEW TECHNOLOGY,
ENTREPRENEURIALISM AND AMERICAN
ENTITLEMENT.
SO THEY KIND
OF LIVE IN TWO, DIFFERENT
WORLDS DON'T THEY?
MEN AND WOMEN OVER AGE 60.
MEN AND WOMEN
45 TO 59, THIS IS THE AVERAGE
POSITION ON THE MAP.
35 TO 44, 25 TO 34 AND THEN
YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN AGED 15 TO
24.
IT IS QUITE INTERESTING THAT WE
KIND OF START OUT SORT OF THE
SAME, INTERESTED IN THE SAME
THINGS, SEX AND VIOLENCE.
WE END UP WITH VAGUE MEMORIES
OF SEX AND VIOLENCE...
[Laughs]
BECOMING MUCH
THE SAME AND THEN QUITE
DIFFERENT DURING THE TIME IN
WHICH WE ACTUALLY HAVE TO GET
TOGETHER AND PRODUCE BABIES AND
HAVE FAMILIES.
IT AH, I FIND IT KIND OF
INTERESTING HOW DIFFERENT WE
ARE AT THE TIME WHEN WE ARE
PROBABLY TRYING TO GET ALONG
WITH EACH OTHER.

The same chart appears with the caption "Region: United States 2004."

Michael says THE REGIONS OF THE UNITED
STATES, UM, THE THING I TOLD
ABOUT "FIRE AND ICE," LOOKED AT
CANADIAN REGIONS.
I FOUND US ALL, YOU KNOW
CELEBRATING OUR DIFFERENCES.
WHAT I CALLED THE NARCISSISM OF
SMALL DIFFERENCES.
AND IF YOU
REALLY WANT TO SEE DIFFERENCES
LOOK AT AMERICA'S REGION,
TEXARKANA AND NEW ENGLAND.
OF COURSE THIS IS INTERESTING.
WHERE DO PRESIDENTIAL
CANDIDATES COME FROM?
I MEAN WHERE DO REPUBLICANS
COME FROM?
WELL, DOWN THERE IN TEXARKANA.
AND WHERE DO THE DEMOCRATS
TYPICALLY CHOOSE THEIR
CANDIDATES?
FROM THEIR HEADQUARTERS IN NEW
ENGLAND.
AH, ONE OF
THE TOP VALUES OF PEOPLE IN NEW
ENGLAND, ALL THOSE NICE PEOPLE
THAT SOME OF US ARE RELATED TO.
WE LIKE TO VISIT THOSE COUNTRY
INNS IN VERMONT...
AND NEW
HAMPSHIRE AND VISIT NICE PEOPLE
IN BOSTON.
WHAT ARE THEY LIKE?
WELL, THEY'RE KIND OF LIKE US.
FLEXIBLE FAMILIES, LARGESSE
OBLIGE.
THESE ARE BOSTON BRAHMANS WHO
ARE ESTABLISHING A FAMILY
CHARITY TO HELP PEOPLE WHO ARE
YOU KNOW LIVE IN THE SOUTH SIDE
AND SO ON.
SCEPTICAL TO ADVERTISING,
RELIGION A LA CARTE IS JUST
FINE WITH THEM.
THEY REJECT ORDER.
THEY HAVE AN ECOLOGICAL
CONCERN, REJECTION OF
AUTHORITY, COMMUNITY
INVOLVEMENT AND CIVIC
ENGAGEMENT.
SO IF THEY EVER WANT TO JOIN
US, I WOULD SAY WELCOME, RIGHT.
THEY WOULD
FIT RIGHT IN.
AND THEN THERE'S THAT OTHER
PLACE.
TEX, TEXAS,
ARKANSAS AND SO ON, THE PLACE
THAT SENDS US REPUBLICAN
PRESIDENTS.
STATUS VIA HOME, YOU REMEMBER
J.R. ON HIS RANCH?
LIKE THIS IS IT.
YOU HAVE MONEY.
YOU BUY A BIG HOUSE...
AND YOU ARE
OSTENTATIOUSLY TELLING EVERYONE
YOU'VE MADE IT.
BY THE WAY, YOU WILL COME ONTO
MY PROPERTY WHEN YOU'RE INVITED

-
OTHER,
BECAUSE I'M STANDING THERE WITH
A GUN, IF YOU'RE...
AMERICAN ENTITLEMENT, AH, CIVIC
APATHY.
THIS SAYS THAT GOVERNMENT
ACTUALLY IS DYSFUNCTIONAL.
IF YOU WANT TO FIX THE PROBLEMS
THAT KATRINA CAUSED YOU KNOW
GET WAL-MART IN THERE.
SOMEBODY WHO ACTUALLY IS WELL,
ORGANIZED, CERTAINLY NOT THE
GOVERNMENTS IN THIS COUNTRY.
EVERYDAY RAGE, PROPRIETY, WEAR
THE RIGHT CLOTHES FOR THE RIGHT
OCCASION.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS, TRADITIONAL
GENDER IDENTITY, LOOK GOOD,
FEEL GOOD, PATRIARCHY AND
CELEBRATING PASSAGES.
SO IF YOU
WANT TO LOOK AT PLACES THAT
HAVE VERY DIFFERENT POINTS OF
VIEW THOSE ARE THE BOOKENDS OF
AMERICAN SOCIETY.
WHITES IN AMERICA OVER 60, UP
THE MAP IN THE UM...
AUTONOMY,
RESPONSIBILITY QUADRANT, AS ARE
HISPANICS.
BLACKS MORE OVERT IN THE STATUS
AND SECURITY QUADRANT.
YOUNG AMERICANS, WHATEVER THEIR
ETHNICITY FIND THEMSELVES IN
THE INTENSITY AND EXCLUSION
QUADRANT.
WHICH IS
INTERESTING, KIND OF A
CONSENSUS.
ALL OF US, WHATEVER OUR
BACKGROUND IS HAVE CREATED THE,
THIS.
AND I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT KIDS
IN GHETTOS.
THIS IS THE AVERAGE KID IN OUR
SAMPLE.

The same chart appears with the caption "American teens: Evolution 1992-2004."

Michael says 1992,
AMERICAN TEENS WERE JUST INSIDE
THE FULFILLMENT, INDIVIDUALITY
AREA, AUTONOMY, AND MOVING THEN
INTO EXCLUSION IN 96.
AND THE YEAR 2000 THE AVERAGE
TEEN IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE
INTENSITY AND EXCLUSION.
AND FINALLY
IN 2004, HEADING STRAIGHT
BEELINE FOR HADES OR NIHILISM.
UM, THE TOP
TEN VALUES OF AMERICAN TEENS,
EQUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUTH.
TREAT US LIKE WE'RE ADULTS.
PENCHANT FOR RISK.
WE'RE TALKING ABOUT YOU KNOW,
PHYSICAL RISK, EXTREME SPORTS,
GOING THROUGH A RED LIGHT AT
FOUR A.M. JUST TO SEE YOU KNOW
IF IT'S RED.
SEE IF YOU MAKE IT.
THAT'D BE A REAL, THRILL.
ACCEPTANCE OF VIOLENCE, UPSCALE
CONSUMERISM, ENTHUSIASM FOR
CONSUMPTION, REJECTING
AUTHORITY, ANOMIE, A DISCONNECT
FROM YOUR SOCIETY.
AN AIMLESSNESS, I HAVE NO GOALS
IN MY LIFE.
SEXUAL
PERMISSIVENESS, JUST DESERTS,
PURSUIT OF INTENSITY.
THIS IS QUITE CLEARLY A
PORTRAIT OF PEOPLE WHO WANT THE
AMERICAN DREAM NOW.
BUT NOT BY WORKING FOR IT.
SO THAT'S THE
STORY OF SOCIAL CHANGE IN THE
CULTURE, A RANDOM SAMPLE OF
EVERYONE.
WE HAVE IN OUR MINDS THAT, THAT
DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, BECAUSE ALL
WE HEAR ABOUT...
IS THE
CULTURE WARS BETWEEN LIBERALS
AND CONSERVATIVES, OR
PROGRESSIVE, SINCE THE WORD
LIBERAL CANNOT BE SAID IN
AMERICA ANYMORE.
SO IT'S, IT'S, IT'S THIS
CULTURE WAR BETWEEN LIBERALS
AND CONSERVATIVES AND WHAT I'VE
JUST SHOWN YOU IS ACTUALLY
THERE'S A, THAT MISSES THE
STORY.
IN FACT IT'S, IT'S A MASSIVE
MOVE IN THE DIRECTION OF, OF
DARWINISM.

A slide reads "Political evolution 1996-2004. American Voter Backlash."

Michael says BUT THERE IS A POLITICAL
REACTION AND THAT'S WHAT WE'LL
TALK ABOUT NOW.
I GO BACK FURTHER WHEN I LOOK
AT THE POLITICAL STORY OF
AMERICA, WAY, WAY BACK TO THE
1930S, WHEN THE DEPRESSION
BROUGHT AMERICA TO ITS KNEES,
MASSIVE, UNEMPLOYMENT IN THAT
COUNTRY.

A slide appears with old pictures of poor people and jobless men marching and the caption "The devastation of the Great Depression…Gives rise to the Progressive Era" Now the pictures change to those of Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy and white people on a bus.

Michael says THESE ARE SOME PRETTY EVOCATIVE
PICTURES MAYBE SOME OF YOU
MIGHT HAVE SEEN IN LIFE
MAGAZINE.
THAT LED TO A PROGRESSIVE ERA.
IT LED AMERICANS WHO AT THAT
TIME, WELL, WHAT WERE THE BIG
IDEOLOGIES IN THE WORLD?
COMMUNISM, AND FASCISM AND
AMERICA CHOSE FRANKLIN DELANO
ROOSEVELT, WHO GAVE THEM RELIEF
RECOVERED REFORM AND THE NEW
DEAL.
AND IT LED TO A LONG ERA OF
PROGRESSIVE POLITICS IN THE
UNITED STATES, OF STATE
ACTIVISM, CIVIL RIGHTS
MOVEMENT, UM, IT LED TO IN THE
60 TO ENVIRONMENTALISM,
FEMINISM, AND, AND A, AND A
SENSE THAT, OF INTERDEPENDENCE
WITHIN AMERICA WITH A, WITH A
STRONG ACTIVIST GOVERNMENT
AGENDA, FROM THE NEW DEAL TO
THE GREAT SOCIETY.

A slide shows pictures of the books "Silent Spring" and "The feminine mystique."

Michael says BUT NOT EVERYTHING WENT
SMOOTHLY IN THE PROGRESSIVE
ERA.
THERE WERE ASSASSINATIONS.
THERE WERE RIOTS.
THERE WERE, THERE WAS, THERE
WAS A LOT OF VIOLENCE IN
AMERICA.
AND LATER ON INTO THE 1970S,
WHAT I JUST TALKED ABOUT
HAPPENING IN THE 60S, IN THE
70S YOU GET A RISE IN CRIME.
YOU HAVE VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS
IN RESPONSE TO, IN OPPOSITION
TO THE WAR IN VIETNAM.
WE HAD OPEC HOLDING AMERICA AT
RANSOM, SO LONG QUEUES FOR
LINING UP FOR GAS.
AND FINALLY AS WE END OUT THE
DECADE OF THE 1970S THE HOSTAGE
CRISIS IN TEHRAN, WHICH LED TO
THE DEFEAT OF JIMMY CARTER IN
HIS RUN FOR RE-ELECTION AGAINST
RONALD REAGAN.
SO ENGAGED AMERICANS CAME TO
QUESTION THE PROGRESSIVE
AGENDA.
THE STATE ACTIVISM, IT WAS UN-
AMERICAN, TOO MUCH, GOVERNMENT
IS PUSHING US AROUND.
THIS IS A COUNTRY WHO'S
FOUNDING IDEOLOGY, WAS TO LIMIT
GOVERNMENT AND TO SAY THAT THE
ACTION WOULD BE IN THE PRIVATE
SECTOR.
THE IDEALISM OF THE CIVIL
RIGHTS MOVEMENT, AND FEMINISM,
ENVIRONMENTALISM, RATHER THEN
BEING WIDELY EMBRACED IN THE
CULTURE THEY ACTUALLY GENERATED
AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION.
CIVIL RIGHTS INITIATIVES
RESULTED IN BUSSING.
AH, AND, AND AFFIRMATIVE
ACTION, AND THAT STARTED TO
BECOME ZERO SUM BECAUSE IT
EFFECTED ME IN MY
NEIGHBOURHOOD, MY KIDS IN
SCHOOL.
FEMINISM QUESTIONED THE
TRADITIONAL ROLE OF WOMEN IN
SOCIETY.
ENVIRONMENTALISM WAS AGAIN,
MORE AND MORE GOVERNMENT
REGULATION.
THIS IS NOT AMERICAN.
AND THEN THE OVER THE TOP
HEDONISM OF THE 1960S.
SOME OF IT
SOFT AND SOME OF IT QUITE HARD.
AND AMERICANS IN RESPONSE TO
THIS STARTED TO VOTE FOR
TRADITIONAL, AMERICAN PRE-NEW
DEAL VALUES.

A slide appears with the caption "Engaged Americans come to question the progressive agenda: State activism, idealism, civil right initiatives, feminism, environmentalism, hedonism, and begin to vote for traditional American values."

A slide shows pictures of the book "Neo-Conservatism" by Irving Kristol, of Ronald Reagan and of an edition of Time magazine with the title "Thunder on the right."

Michael says THE
INTELLECTUALS IN AMERICA
STARTING IN THE 1950S, BUT
TAKING OFF EVEN MORE IN THE
1960S.
IRVING KRISTOL, WILLIAM BUCKLEY
OF COURSE STARTED IN THE MID
1950S WITH HIS NATIONAL REVIEW.
THERE WAS AN INTELLECTUAL
REACTION.
MANY OF THEM HAD BEEN PART OF
THE NEW DEAL IDEOLOGY, THE NEW
DEAL GENERATION AND THEY CAME
TO REACT AGAINST IT.
INCLUDING EVEN A DEMOCRAT,
SENATOR, SENATOR DANIEL PATRICK
MOYNIHAN A SOCIOLOGIST WHO
BECAME A, NEO-CONSERVATIVE IN
THAT ERA.
THE ELECTION OF RONALD REAGAN,
GOVERNMENT ISN'T THE SOLUTION.
GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM.
THAT WAS THE SAME YEAR WE RE-
ELECTED PIERRE TRUDEAU.
THE RISE OF THE RELIGIOUS
RIGHT, THE BERLIN WALL FALLS.
AND WHAT WE SEE AS WE MOVE ON
FROM THAT PERIOD OF THE 1980S
IS THAT WE GET PEOPLE LIKE RUSH
LIMBAUGH WITH TALK RADIO.
THINGS GET ROUGHER, THE
CONTRACT WITH AMERICA NEWT
GINGRICH, AND THEN LATER, THEN
WE GET OF COURSE THE TRAGEDY OF
911.
OSAMA BIN LADEN BECOMES A PART
OF OUR PSYCHE.
PRESIDENT BUSH DECLARES VICTORY
ON THE USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
AFTER REAGAN, THE BACKLASH
CONTINUES AGAINST HEDONISM BOTH
REAL AND THAT DEPICTED IN THE
MEDIA.
AFFIRMATIVE ACTION AGAIN, THE
ZERO SUM WITH MAYBE YOUR KID
GOING TO A COLLEGE OR
UNIVERSITY.
FEMINISM, 1982 THE YEAR THAT WE
ENTRENCHED GENDER EQUALITY INTO
OUR CONSTITUTION WAS THE YEAR
THAT THE EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT
LAPSED FOR LACK OF SUPPORT IN
THE STATES, 1982, THE GROWING
TOLERANCE IN THE CULTURE OF
HOMOSEXUALITY AS WE SEE THAT
CONTINUES WITH AN OUT OF TOUCH
HOLLYWOOD AND POST-WORLD WAR
TWO INTERNATIONALISM.
AMERICA FROM
1945 UNTIL ABOUT 1989 WAS THE
FIRST AMONG EQUALS.
AFTER 1989 IT WAS FIRST.
MY FAVOURITE
QUESTION, NEXT TO THIS FLEXIBLE
GENDER IDENTITY IS ONE THAT I
WILL TAKE TO MY GRAVE WITH ME,
I GUESS.
IT WILL BE CHISELLED ON MY
TOMBSTONE.
IN MY CASE IRONICALLY IT WILL
BE IN QUOTES.
[Audience laughs]

A two-axis bar chart appears on screen.

Michael says THE FATHER OF
THE FAMILY MUST BE THE MASTER
IN HIS OWN HOUSE.
A CLASSIC STATEMENT OF
PATRIARCHAL AUTHORITY RIGHT?
I MEAN THIS IS THE FIRST
INSTITUTION WE'RE ALL
INTRODUCED TO ON THIS PLANET.
WE GET IT HARD-WIRED WITH THE
DISK THAT THEY PUT INTO OUR
BRAIN WHEN WE'RE BORN, TOGETHER
WITH SOCIALIZATION OF THAT
FIRST TEN YEARS.
BY THE TIME WE'RE TEN, THAT'S
PROBABLY US.
THERE COULD BE WARS AND
DEPRESSIONS AND TERRIBLE THINGS
HAPPEN TO US, BUT ESSENTIALLY
OUR VALUES ARE GONNA CRYSTALIZE
BY THE TIME WE'RE ABOUT TEN.
ONE OF THE THINGS OF COURSE IS
THAT WE'RE GOING TO CRYSTALIZE
IS A, IS A SENSE OF WHAT, WHAT
IS THE AUTHORITY STRUCTURE IN
THIS FAMILY?
WHEN A MARTIAN LANDS ON THIS
PLANET HE OR IT SAYS, TAKE ME
TO YOUR LEADER.
THE CLASSIC STATEMENT OF
LEADERSHIP IN A FAMILY IS THAT
THE FATHER IS THE MASTER IN THE
HOUSE.
WE ASK ANY TYPE OF QUESTION, SO
WE PUT THIS AS A STATEMENT TO
RANDOM SAMPLES OF CANADIANS,
AMERICANS AND ALL, OTHER SORTS
OF PEOPLE ON THIS PLANET.
UM, IN 1992 42 PERCENT OF AMERICANS
TOLD US THE FATHER MUST, BE THE
MASTER IN THE HOUSE.
I REMEMBER TAKING THIS FINDING
TO A CONFERENCE IN SAINT LOUIS
AND A GENTLEMAN GOT UP AND SAID
MISTER ADAMS DID YOU ONLY SURVEY
IN TEXAS?
[Audience laughs]
I SAID NO,
NO.
WE, EVERYBODY'S IN THERE,
BOSTON OVER TO SAUSALITO, IT'S
A RANDOM.
HE SAID WELL YOU SAY THAT ONE
IN TWENTY IS GOING TO BE WRONG.
WOULD YOU PLEASE GO BACK AND
FIND OUT, YOU KNOW AND GET, GET
IT BACK TO A PROPER NUMBER?
SO FINE, FOUR YEARS LATER WE DO
OUR NEXT SURVEY, IT'S 44 PERCENT.
SO WOW, IT'S, YOU KNOW IT'S UP
TWO POINTS, NOT REALLY
STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT.
SO THEN FOUR YEARS GO BY, AFTER
WE HAD A LONG TIME, RIGHT.
I SPENT A LOT OF TIME THINKING
ABOUT WHAT ARE WE GONNA GET THE
NEXT TIME?
SO NOW IT'S THE YEAR 2000.
THIS IS THE FIRST BUSH VERSUS
BUSH ELECTION.
HE'S RUNNING AGAINST AL GORE
AND WE FIND NOW IT'S 49 PERCENT OF
AMERICANS, IN FACT IT'S GOING
UP.
AND NOW WE'RE STATISTICALLY
SIGNIFICANT.
OF COURSE THOSE 49 PERCENT, YOU KNOW
THEY VOTED FOR GEORGE BUSH.
THE OTHER 51 FOR AL GORE.
[Audience laughing]
AND BUSH WON,
BECAUSE AMERICA IS A DEMOCRACY,
SO.
[Audience laughs]
AND NOW WE,
AND NOW THE YEAR 2004, 52 PERCENT.
AND AH, OH,
AND IT CORRELATES WITH THE GOP
VOTE.
ISN'T THAT INTERESTING?
SO, WE'LL TALK A LITTLE LATER
ABOUT...
I HAVE SOME
OTHER COUNTRIES TO COMPARE THE
AMERICANS TO, BUT WE'LL JUST
LOOK AT THE AMERICANS FOR THE
BEING.
SO WHAT'S THE IMPACT OF THE
GREAT BACKLASH IN AMERICA?
RELIGION INCREASINGLY
EVANGELICAL, IT'S NOT THAT
AMERICA IS BECOMING MORE
RELIGIOUS.
IT'S THAT THOSE WHO ARE
RELIGIOUS ARE BECOMING
INCREASINGLY EVANGELICAL,
INCREASINGLY FUNDAMENTALIST IN
THEIR INTERPRETATION OF THE
SCRIPTURES AND SO ON.
AND THEY'RE GETTING
INCREASINGLY POLITICAL.
THEY'RE NOT JUST HAVING THE
RELIGION AT HOME AND IN THE
CHURCH.
THEY WANT TO GET IT OUT IN THE
COMMUNITY AND THEY WANT TO
ELECT CANDIDATES AND EFFECT THE
PUBLIC POLICY AGENDA.
THE AMERICAN DREAM AND THE
AMERICAN SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT
ARE RESURGENT.
THE BELIEF IN THE AMERICAN
DREAM AND THE SENSE THAT
AMERICA HAS ENTITLEMENT TO
WHATEVER ON THIS PLANET IS
THERE.
A GROWING GAP BETWEEN THE RICH
AND THE POOR, THIS IS
CORRELATED HIGHLY WITH
DARWINISM, RIGHT.
YOU'RE GONNA HAVE WINNERS.
YOU'RE GONNA HAVE LOSERS.
AND OF COURSE IF YOU HAVE A
PURITAN BACKGROUND OR A
CALVINIST BACKGROUND YOU KNOW
THAT IN FACT IF YOU'RE RICH
YOU'RE PROVING THAT YOU'RE
WORTHY.
YOU ARE AMONG THE ELECT AND IT
ALLOWS YOU THEN TO SAY THOSE
WHO ARE POOR ARE NOT AMONG THE
ELECT.
WHY WOULD I HELP THEM?
IT'S, IT'S BEEN DECIDED.
IT'S PART OF THE GREAT CODE.
UM, GROWING GAP BETWEEN
GENERATIONS.
YOU SAW THAT EARLIER.
AGAIN, THIS DISCONNECT WITH OUR
CHILDREN, AH, THE BOOMERS, THE
PARENTS.
THE BOOMERS, THE BIG GAP IS
BETWEEN THE BOOMERS AND THEIR
KIDS IN THIS CULTURE.
THE MARGINALIZATION OF LIBERAL
IDEALISTS, MANY OF THEM ARE
TRAITORS, AND A DEFERENCE TO
AUTHORITY.
THIS IS VERY INTERESTING IN A
CULTURE THAT YOU WOULD THINK
WOULD QUESTION AUTHORITY.
WHAT YOU FIND IS DEFERENCE TO
AUTHORITY, IN A TIME OF FEAR,
IN A TIME OF PERMANENT WAR, IN
A TIME OF TERRORISM, WHO DO YOU
LOOK TO, TO PROTECT YOU?
IT'S, RIGHT.
YOU DON'T
LOOK TO YOUR LITTLE SISTER.
THAT'S CANADA.
[Audience laughs]
YOU LOOK TO
DAD AS MASTER IN THE HOUSE.
THE POLICE CHIEF TO PROTECT US
AGAINST BAD GUYS IN THE STREET.
THE PRESIDENT
AND COMMANDER IN CHIEF.
SO WE GET A NEW KIND OF
GOVERNMENT ACTIVISM, VERY
DIFFERENT FROM THE KIND OF
GOVERNMENT ACTIVISM WE SAW IN
THE ERA OF THE, IN THE
PROGRESSIVE ERA.
BILL CLINTON, WHO IS KNOWN TO
HAVE VERY, GOOD INSIGHTS HAS
SAID IN A CLIMATE OF
INSECURITY, AMERICANS PREFER
LEADERSHIP THAT'S WRONG AND
STRONG OVER THAT WHICH IS
RIGHT, BUT WEAK.
SO LET'S LOOK A LITTLE BIT AT
WHERE WE FIND...
POLITICAL
CONSTITUENCIES.
THE UNLIKELY VOTERS ARE HERE.
THIS IS 96, 2-2000, 2000.
SO THEY'RE, THEY'RE INTO
NIHILISM.
POLITICAL
ENGAGEMENT FOR THESE PEOPLE
WOULD BE IRRELEVANT, RIGHT.
A CONGRESSMAN'S GOING TO DO
NOTHING FOR THEM.
A SENATOR'S GOING TO DO NOTHING
FOR THEM.
AND A PRESIDENT, COME ON,
THERE'S NO PROGRAM FOR THEM.
THEY'VE GOT ONE JOB, HANGING
ONTO IT IS ENOUGH, OR TWO JOBS
OR MAYBE THREE JOBS.
IT'S VERY TOUGH WHERE THEY ARE,
AND THE IDEA THAT POLITICS,
THAT POLITICAL ENGAGEMENT,
SPEND THE TIME TO BE POLITICAL
ENGAGED WILL ISSUE A RETURN
SEEMS RIDICULOUS.
THE POOR PEOPLE IN CANADA ARE
TWICE AS LIKELY TO VOTE THEN
THE POOR PEOPLE IN THE UNITED
STATES BECAUSE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
BRINGS THEM A RETURN IN PUBLIC
POLICY.
IN THE UNITED STATES...
IT IS MUCH
LESS SO.

Another slide shows the 4-axis chart with the caption "Likelihood of voting and party preference of certain voters. 1996-2004."

Michael says SO WHERE ARE THE ENGAGED?
WELL, THEY'RE GOING IN ANOTHER
DIRECTION, BACK TOWARD
AUTHORITY, GIVEN THE CHAOS
WITHIN AMERICA, THE CHAOS OF
AMERICA IN THE WORLD.
VOTERS ARE MOVING UP THE MAP.
WHERE ARE REPUBLICANS?
THEY'RE RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THE
MAP.
SOME OF THEM ARE ACTUALLY OVER
THE MAP AND ON THE OTHER SIDE.
[All laughing]
BENT OUT OF
SHAPE ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON IN
THE CULTURE.
AND WHERE ARE THE DEMOCRATS?
WELL, THEY'RE MOVING IN THAT
DIRECTION AS WELL.
THEY'RE KIND
OF CONFUSED, THE OLD, NEW DEAL
COALITION OF THE WORKING
STIFFS, THE UNIONIZED GUYS,
THE, THE HISPANICS, THE AFRICAN
AMERICANS AND THE LIBERALS.
I MEAN THEY ARE MORE OR LESS
LURCHING IN THAT DIRECTION,
WHEREAS REPUBLICANS ARE MOVING
UP THE MAP.
SO, THE BIG GAP BETWEEN THE
ENGAGED AND THE NON-ENGAGED.
THAT'S THE STORY OF "AMERICAN
BACKLASH."
BUT WITHIN THE ENGAGED WE DO
HAVE THESE TWO QUOTE, UNQUOTE
WARRING CAMPS, THE DEMOCRATS
AND THE REPUBLICANS.
SO LET'S HAVE A LOOK AT...
ORIENTATIONS,
TO PRINCIPLE, ASPECTS OF LIFE
AMONG THESE THREE GROUPS,
DEMOCRATS, REPUBLICANS AND THE
DISENGAGED.

A 3-column chart appears with the title "The elevator argument" It compares republicans, democrats and disengaged according to the following variables: religion, family, society, propriety, ecology, America and dream trip.

Michael says SO, REPUBLICAN
VIEW OF RELIGION IS ONE TRUE
PATH TO SALVATION.
THE DEMOCRAT IS A LA CARTE
RELATIVISM, THAT WE SAW IN NEW
ENGLAND.
AND FOR THE DISENGAGED IT'S
IRRELEVANT, RELIGION, GOING TO
CHURCH.
YOU GOT TO BE CRAZY.
FAMILY, AGAIN FOR THE
REPUBLICANS, FATHER MUST BE
MASTER.
IT'S NATURAL.
FOR THE DEMOCRAT, EQUALITY AND
FLEXIBILITY WITHIN THE FAMILY,
DAD LEADS HERE, MOM LEADS
THERE, JUNIOR HERE, SIS, THERE.
WHO'S GOT THE TIME?
WHO KNOWS HOW TO FIX THIS
BLOODY COMPUTER?
IT DOESN'T MATTER, RIGHT.
ITS, WHO, WHO KNOWS ABOUT THIS?
WHO'S INTERESTED IN IT, THAT'S
WHO LEADS THE PROJECT.
THE DISENGAGED, WHAT FAMILY,
RIGHT?
SOCIETY, FOR THE REPUBLICANS
IT'S PEOPLE LIKE ME.
THEY ARE TRYING TO MOVE MORE
AND MORE TO GET AWAY FROM THE
OTHER.
DOWNTOWN AGAIN, WITH THE
SUBURB, THE EDGE CITY, THE
GATED COMMUNITY.
PEOPLE WHO DEMOGRAPHICALLY AND
PSYCHOGRAPHICALLY ARE LIKE
THEM.
THE DEMOCRATS, THE PEOPLE IN
THE HERE, THEY DON'T WANT TO BE
JUST WITH PEOPLE LIKE THEM.
THEY WANT TO BE IN DIVERSE
SETTINGS.
THEY WANT TO MEET PEOPLE WHO
AREN'T LIKE THEM.
THEY WANT TO MOVE BEYOND MEAT
AND POTATOES AND SO ON, TO
ORDERING IN PIZZAS OR CHINESE
FOOD AND THEY'VE GONE BEYOND
THAT NOW.
THEY WANT TO HAVE FUSION.
LET'S PUT TOGETHER FLAVOURS
FROM THIS CULTURE AND THAT ONE
AND THE OTHER THING.
LET'S CREATE SOMETHING NEW.
AND THEN OF COURSE SOCIETY FOR
THE DISENGAGED IS THE JUNGLE.
PROPRIETY, DRESS, THIS IS
REPUBLICANS, DRESS FOR SUCCESS.
THE DEMOCRATS ARE CASUAL IS
AUTHENTIC.
THIS WAS OF COURSE WALK CASUAL
WAS THE WAY THEY DRESSED IN THE
CLINTON WHITE HOUSE.
THEY SOON CHANGED THAT WHEN
GEORGE BUSH GOT IN.
IT WAS SHIRT AND TIE, WHITE
SHIRT TYPICALLY, AND CERTAINLY
WEARING A TIE.
FOR THE DISENGAGED, BLING,
RIGHT, IT'S THE SPARKLY THINGS
THAT SHOW YOU THAT YOU'VE MADE
IT.
ECOLOGY FOR THE REPUBLICAN IS A
SENSE OF HUMAN ENTITLEMENT.
WE HUMANS ARE SUPERIOR TO OTHER
SPECIES.
WE CAN OF COURSE TAKE TARGET
PRACTICE ON THEM AGAIN ON
RANCHES IN TEXAS AND SO ON.
ECOLOGY FOR THE DEMOCRATS IS
THE STRONGEST VALUE THAT UNITES
THE DEMOCRATS.
IT'S A SENSE OF UM, IT'S A
SECULAR RELIGION FOR THEM.
IT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING
IS MAN TRYING TO FIND A
BALANCE, HARMONY WITH OUR
NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.
THE ENVIRONMENT FOR THE
DISENGAGED IS INVISIBLE.
THEY DON'T SEE IT.
AMERICA FOR
REPUBLICANS, WELL, IT'S FOR
DEMOCRATS, AMERICA'S THE FIRST
AMONG EQUALS.
THAT WAS THE AMERICA THEY FELL
IN LOVE WITH AND SOME OF US
TOO.
THE AMERICA OF UM...
OF THE UNITED
NATIONS, OF THE WORLD TRADE
ORGANIZATION, OF THE GENERAL
AGREEMENT ON TARIFFS AND TRADE
AND SO ON, HUMAN RIGHTS.
UM, ITS, ITS, THAT'S THE
AMERICA THAT THEY WOULD LIKE
AND OF COURSE IT PARALLELS THE
FAMILY THAT THEY WOULD LIKE,
WHEREAS FOR REPUBLICANS IT'S
AMERICA JUST PLAIN, FIRST.
AMERICA FOR THE DISENGAGED IS
VICE CITY.
THIS IS AH, YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW
ABOUT THIS.
IT'S A VIDEO GAME, THAT YOUR
TEN-YEAR OLD SON OR GRANDSON
MIGHT BE PLAYING, IN WHICH
YOU'RE GOING AROUND IN, VICE
CITY IS MIAMI.
YOU PLAY A POLICEMAN.
YOU GET POINTS FOR KILLING
PROSTITUTES.
IT'S A GREAT GIFT TO GIVE ANY,
ANY YOUNG MAN TO TEACH THEM
WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT.
AND THEN THE DREAM TRIP FOR THE
REPUBLICANS WOULD BE A
MEDITERRANEAN CRUISE.
BUT IT WOULD BE IN THE, ON THE
USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN...
[Audience laughs]
BECAUSE AS
YOU'RE GOING TO MARSEILLES AND
ROME AND ALL OF THESE WONDERFUL
PLACES, YOU DO WANT TO DO SOME
POWER SHOPPING, BUT YOU WANT TO
COME BACK TO A SAFE PLACE.
AND WHAT BETTER THEN AN
AIRCRAFT CARRIER?
FOR A DEMOCRAT IT WOULD BE
ECOTOURISM IN COSTA RICA.
AND THE GREAT TRIP FOR THE
DISENGAGED WOULD BE CRYSTAL
METH.
[Audience laughing]
SO THIS IS
ALL, HIGHLY IMPERICAL RESEARCH.
YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?
THESE ARE ALL
COMING FROM THE SURVEYS WE'VE
DONE.
SO CONCLUSIONS ON AMERICA,
POLITICAL CONSERVATISM WILL
DEFEAT LIBERALISM IN AMERICA SO
LONG AS SOCIAL DARWINISM IS
ASCENDANT IN AMERICA...
AND TERRORISM
IS A THREAT FROM ABROAD.
SO THE CULTURE OF FEAR WILL
MAKE PEOPLE REACT, THE
POLITICALLY ENGAGED TO, TO
BECOME MORE ORIENTED TO, TO
CONSERVATISM, TO TRADITIONAL
AUTHORITY.
WHEN WILL AMERICA CHANGE?
I KEEP BEING ASKED THIS BY
PEOPLE WHO CALL ME FROM NEW
ENGLAND, AND SAN FRANCISCO AND
AUSTIN, TEXAS, UM, WHICH IS I
THINK A WALLED CAMP DOWN THERE,
A UNIVERSITY TOWN.
WHEN WILL WE CHANGE?
AND I SAY WELL, FROM MY POINT
OF VIEW I THINK THE REASON THAT
YOU'VE GOT JARED DIAMOND ON THE
BESTSELLER LIST WITH HIS BOOK
"COLLAPSE" IS THAT WELL, WHEN
YOU FACE COLLAPSE.
WHEN DO YOU CHANGE YOUR OWN
LIFE?
WHEN THE DOCTOR TELLS YOU IF
YOU KEEP DOING THIS, YOU'LL BE
DEAD NEXT WEEK.
AND THEN HALF
OF US MAKE A CHANGE.
AH, SO ANOTHER CATASTROPHE ON
THE SCALE OF THE GREAT
DEPRESSION CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE
PEOPLE CHANGE, AND I THINK IN
THE MEANTIME DEMOCRATS CAN ONLY
WIN CAMPAIGNS.
NOW WE'RE TALKING ABOUT
DEMOCRATS WINNING, WHETHER
THAT'S A WIN FOR LIBERALISM OR
NOT, I DON'T KNOW.
BUT DEMOCRATS CAN WIN CAMPAIGNS
AND ADVANCE PROGRESSIVE CAUSES
BY...
APPEALING TO
THE, TO, TO CONSERVATIVE
VALUES.
A GUY NAMED TIM KAINE JUST WON,
A DEMOCRAT JUST WON IN
VIRGINIA.
HE IS OPPOSED TO THE DEATH
PENALTY, WHICH IS LIKE 80 PERCENT OF
AMERICANS ARE IN FAVOUR OF THE
DEATH PENALTY.
IT'S 50 PERCENT OF CANADIANS, AND HE
WON BY SAYING YES.
I'M AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY.
THE REASON I AM, IS THAT I'M A
DEVOUT CHRISTIAN.
I'M A BELIEVING, PRACTICING
ROMAN CATHOLIC AND MY RELIGION
TELLS ME I HAVE TO OPPOSE THE
DEATH PENALTY.
AND THEY FORGAVE HIM FOR THAT
AND THEY VOTED FOR HIM AS
GOVERNOR OF VIRGINIA.
THINK OF ENVIRONMENTALISM.
OUR WAY OF
DOING THINGS, THE WAY THE
EUROPEANS DO, AND THE AMERICAN
WAY.
THE OLD ENVIRONMENTALISM WAS
LIMITS.
LIMITS TO GROWTH, THE CLUB OF
ROME AND SO ON.

Another slide shows a chart that compares the old environmentalism to the new one and the caption "Reframing American Environmentalism."

Michael says THE NEW ENVIRONMENTALISM IN
AMERICA IF YOU WANT TO POSITION
IT TO GET MASS SUPPORT IN
AMERICA, THAT WOULD INCLUDE
CONSERVATIVES AND MIDDLE
AMERICA WOULD BE POSSIBILITY,
LIMITLESS POSSIBILITY.
THE OLD ENVIRONMENTALISM WAS
ONE WHERE PROGRESS WAS A
PROBLEM.
NOW WE HAVE
TO SEE PROGRESS WILL BE THE
SOLUTION TO OUR ENVIRONMENTAL
PROBLEMS.
IN THE PAST GOVERNMENT
REGULATION, MAKE A RULE.
NOW WE DON'T LIKE GOVERNMENT IN
AMERICA.
SO IT'S GOT TO BE PUBLIC,
PRIVATE SYNERGIES.
IN THE PAST IT WAS ENVIRONMENT
VERSUS JOBS.
NOW IT'S GOT TO BE
ENVIRONMENTALISM WILL CREATE
JOBS.
IT'LL BE A GROWTH STRATEGY.
AND IN THE PAST, ENVIRONMENTAL,
ENVIRONMENTALISM WAS LIKE
INTERNATIONAL RULES, THE KYOTO
PROTOCOL WHICH AMERICA SAID NO.
WE MAKE OUR OWN RULES.
AND SO THE NEW ENVIRONMENTALISM
HAS GOT TO BE AMERICA TAKES THE
LEAD.
AGAIN, I'M TALKING ABOUT HOW TO
POSITION THIS IN THE UNITED
STATES.
SO INDUSTRY IS NOT THE PROBLEM.
INDUSTRY WILL
GIVE US THE SOLUTION.
AND WHAT WILL INDUSTRY GIVE US?
OF COURSE WE WILL STILL HAVE
OUR TOYS.
[Audience laughs]
BUT THEY WILL
BE HYDROGEN-POWERED.

A picture shows Arnold Schwarzenegger standing next to a car with the caption "Arnie with his new hydrogen-powered Hummer."

Michael says AND SO WE HAVE ARNIE HERE WITH
HIS HYDROGEN-POWERED HUMMER.
SO IS IT THE SAME ELSEWHERE?
FATHER IS FAMILY, THE FAMILY
MUST BE MASTER IN HIS OWN
HOUSE, 42, 44, 49, 52.
OKAY, SO YOU'VE SEEN THAT
TREND.
THEN THERE'S
CANADA, THE PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF
CANADA.
[Audience laughs]
WHERE ARE WE?
SOVIET, CANUCKASTANAS, PAT
BUCHANAN HAS SAID.
IN 1992 WE WERE AT 26 PERCENT.
IT WAS PRETTY
BAD THEN.
BUT IT GETS WORSE.
AH, 20 PERCENT.
[Audience laughs]
18.
[Audience laughs]
IF GEORGE
BUSH HAD CALLED ME IN 2003,
PRIOR TO CALLING UP CHRETIAN I
WOULD HAVE SAID YOU DON'T WANT
THEM.
[All laugh]
WHAT ARE THEY
GONNA DO, TAKE KLEENEXES AND
THROW THEM AT PEOPLE?
[Audience laughs]
SO, AND THEN
18 PERCENT.
THIS IS REMARKABLE.
IT'S REMARKABLE FOR A COUPLE OF
REASONS.
THINK OF IMMIGRATION.
THINK OF THE 2.5 MILLION NEW
CANADIANS WHO'VE COME TO THIS
COUNTRY SINCE 1990, AND THINK
ABOUT WHERE THEY COME FROM.
THEY DON'T COME FROM THE MOST
LIBERAL PLACES ON THE PLANET.
THEY COME FROM VERY,
TRADITIONAL SOCIETIES THAT ARE
RELIGIOUS, PATRIARCHAL.
THEY'RE PART OF OUR SAMPLE TOO.
THEY'RE 20 PERCENT OF OUR SAMPLE AND
THEY ARE ACTUALLY THE REASON
WHY WE'RE NOT CONTINUING TO GO
DOWN TO 15 PERCENT IS THAT IT'S TAKING
TIME FOR US TO HAVE AN
INFLUENCE ON THESE PEOPLE AND
OF COURSE ON THEIR CHILDREN.
WE HAVE TO SEND THEM TO SCHOOL.
THEY HAVE TO MEET CANADIAN KIDS
TO BE RUINED.
[Audience laughs]
AND SO, SO
YOU, WE'RE WORKING ON IT.
BUT STILL PROBABLY PRETTY,
WELL, IN AMERICA OF COURSE IT'S
TEN PERCENT, ELEVEN PERCENT
FOREIGN BORN.
THERE'S AMERICA...
1992 TO 2000.
WHERE ARE THE CANADIANS ON THE
NORTH AMERICAN MAP?
WELL, WE'RE GOING DOWN AGAIN
AWAY FROM TRADITIONAL
AUTHORITY.
FOR US IT'S FATHER AND RELIGION
AND GOVERNMENT AND MONOPOLIES
AND ALL OLIGOPOLIES GOING INTO
THIS AUTONOMY QUADRANT.
DEEPER INTO
IT, AMERICA GOING INTO THE
THRILLS, INTENSITY, DARWINIST
QUADRANT.
SO FATHER IS MASTER, 52 PERCENT IN THE
UNITED STATES.
NOW WE TURN TO SE MACHO,
REAL, MACHO COUNTRIES, 43 IN
MEXICO.
I THINK IF I PRESENTED THIS IN
MEXICO CITY, I COULD GET
PUNCHED IN THE NOSE.
THAT THEY ARE ACTUALLY LESS
PATRIARCHAL THEN IS THE UNITED
STATES.
ITALY, SPAIN, FRANCE, THESE
LATIN COUNTRIES, LESS THEN THE
UNITED STATES.
CANADA OF COURSE WAY DOWN
THERE, WITH GERMANY AND SWEDEN
OF COURSE.
WE ALWAYS COME SECOND IN
CANADA.
[Audience laughing]
MIND YOU, OUR
WOMEN ARE COMING FIRST LATELY,
AREN'T THEY?
BUT ANYWAY, WHEN WE GET THE,
WHEN WE PUT THE MEN AND THE
WOMEN TOGETHER WE COME SECOND
AND, AND YOU KNOW ABOUT THE
CANADIAN WHO WON GOLD AND HE
WAS SO HAPPY HE HAD IT BRONZED.
THIS IS YOU KNOW...
[Audience laughing]
AMERICAN
TEENS, GOING TO NIHILISM, HELL
IN A HANDBASKET.
WHERE ARE OUR LITTLE DARLINGS
GOING?
WELL THEY'RE JUST DOWN THERE,
WITH MOM AND DAD IN THE
IDEALISM AND AUTONOMY QUADRANT.
THIS IS
FASCINATING ACTUALLY.
I MEAN YOU COULD PUT THIS UP ON
THE WALL.
I MEAN THIS, WOULDN'T YOU THINK
THESE, ARE THE CANARY IN THE
MINE?
I MEAN IF ANYBODY IS GOING TO
BE AMERICANIZED IT'S YOUR, IT'S
YOUR LITTLE BOY WHO'S WATCHING
YOU KNOW "PETER AND FAMILY
GUY," AND HOMER SIMPSON.
YOUR DAUGHTER WATCHING
"FRIENDS," AND ALL THESE OTHER,
YOU KNOW THE J., WORSHIPS J.LO
OR 50 CENT AND SO ON.
SURE, THEY SPEND A LOT OF TIME
WITH AMERICAN CULTURE.
BUT IT'S LIKE A GLASS OF BEER.
YOU KNOW IT GIVES US A BIT OF A
BUZZ, BUT IT GOES THROUGH VERY
QUICKLY AND IT DOESN'T EFFECT
OUR CHROMOSOME STRUCTURE.
IT'S MORE IMPORTANT WHERE WE GO
HOME THEN THE SILLY THINGS ON
TELEVISION.
FOX NEWS, SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS
IN AMERICA BLAME HOLLYWOOD,
BLAME TV, RIGHT.
DO THEY EVER THINK OF LOOKING
AT, IN THE FAMILY?
LOOK IN THE COMMUNITY, LOOK AT
THE SCHOOL.
NO, NO, THEY CAN'T QUESTION OUR
INSTITUTIONS.
IT'S, IT'S THESE CANADIANS AND
HOLLYWOOD THAT ARE YOU KNOW
THAT ARE CAUSING ALL THE
TROUBLE.
UM, U.S.
ADULTS 35 TO 60, THESE ARE THE
PARENT GENERATION AND THE
TEENS, VERY FAR APART.
CANADIAN ADULTS AND CANADIAN
TEENS...
OUR KIDS
BEING FAR CLOSER, MORE
INDIVIDUALISTIC, RIGHT.
THEY ARE FURTHER DOWN THE MAP,
BUT STILL IN THAT IDEALISM AND
AUTONOMY QUADRANT, WHEREAS THE
TEENS HAVE MOVED TO A WHOLE,
DIFFERENT PLACE FROM THEIR
PARENTS.
SO THAT LADIES AND GENTLEMEN IS
"AMERICAN BACKLASH," WITH A
LITTLE BIT OF SPIN ON THERE FOR
A CANADIAN AUDIENCE JUST
BECAUSE I KNOW THAT EVEN THOUGH
YOU LOVE TO FOCUS ON AMERICA,
YOU DO CARE A BIT ABOUT THIS
BENIGHTED LAND, SO THANK YOU
VERY MUCH FOR YOUR ATTENTION.
