(music plays)
In animation, the title appears inside the shape of a house: “More to Health.”

The opening sequence shows a wooden table with a small lit candle as several words fly by: Nutrition, medicine, prevention, treatment, health.
Fast clips show different sets of hands performing activities on the table such as pulling petals from a daisy, drawing a big red heart, tuning a violin, flipping through the pages of a book, cooking, and pouring a glass of red wine.
In animation, the title appears inside the shape of a house: “More to life.”

Then, Maureen Taylor appears in a studio with yellow walls and a small TV set in the background, which reads “More to life.”

Maureen is in her late thirties, with wavy blond hair in a bob. She's wearing a red sweater and a thin gold necklace.

She says HELLO, I'M
MAUREEN TAYLOR, AND WELCOME
TO “MORE TO LIFE.”
YOU CAN LEAD A CHILD TO
NUTRITIOUS FOOD BUT YOU
CAN'T MAKE HIM EAT IT.
IN A MOMENT, WE'LL TAKE YOUR
CALLS ABOUT HEALTHY FOODS
AND GOOD NUTRITION FOR YOUR
FAMILY.
BUT FIRST A LOOK AT FAMILIES
WHO ARE FIGHTING MORE THAN
WEIGHT GAIN.
THEY MUST ALSO FIGHT
PREJUDICE AND
DISCRIMINATION.
BECAUSE WHEN YOU'RE
OVERWEIGHT, THERE ARE TWO
BATTLES TO FIGHT.
ONE AGAINST FAT, THE OTHER
FOR ACCEPTANCE.

A clip plays on screen in which black and white photos, and then colour photos, show a baby girl and then a little girl as she grows up.

A female voice says I NEVER LIKED TO BE
PHOTOGRAPHED AS A KID.
I WAS ALWAYS TOLD THAT I WAS
UGLY AND FAT, AND JUST NOT
ACCEPTABLE.
IT BASICALLY MAKES YOU FEEL
LIKE YOU'RE DIFFERENT THAN
ANYBODY ELSE.
YOU'RE NOT ACCEPTED AT
SCHOOL.
THERE'S NAME-CALLING.

Children play in a park.

A girl’s voice says I'M LIKE, WELL, THE OLDER
THEY GET THE BETTER THEY CAN
THINK OF MEANER THINGS TO
SAY.
FATTY FATTY
TWO BY FOUR, CAN'T TILT
THROUGH
THE KITCHEN DOOR

Children play in the park.
(GIGGLING)

Maureen narrates THE FIRST ONE TO BE
PICKED ON IN THE PLAYGROUND.
THE LAST ONE TO BE PICKED
FOR THE TEAM.
CHILDHOOD MEMORIES THAT
HELENA SPRING, FOR ONE, WILL
NEVER FORGET.

Helena, in her thirties, appears on screen and says
I MEAN, I WAS TEASED AT
SCHOOL, CALLED “TINY,” “TINY
THE ELEPHANT.

A homemade video shows a plump female teenager in a formal white gown.

A female voice says THE MOST PAINFUL THING
ABOUT BEING AN OVER WEIGHT
KID IS THE ABUSE THAT YOU
HAVE TO TAKE.

Maureen narrates SHE ISN'T TAKING IT ANYMORE.
HELENA GREW UP IN THE '50s
WITH A CHUBBY JUNIOR
WARDROBE AND A SIZE SMALL
EGO.
NOW SHE'S EDITOR OF CANADA
WDE MAGAZINE AN ADVOCATE IN
THE FAT ACCEPTANCE MOVEMENT.

Helena reappears and says YOU'RE BORN DIFFERENT
SIZES WITH DIFFERENT EYE
COLOUR, HAIR COLOUR, LENGTH,
TALL, SHORT, FAT, THIN, AND
IT'S JUST HOW THE CARDS ARE
DEALT.
BUT IT WAS STILL A SHAME TO
BE A FAT KID.

A woman in her thirties with short purple hair appears. A caption reads “Doctor Miriam Kaufman. Co-Author ‘All shapes and sizes.’”

Miriam says IT'S MUCH MORE ACCEPTABLE
TO CALL SOMEONE FATTY OR
GROSS OR STUPID OR LAZY IF
THEY HAPPEN TO BE BIG THAN
IT IS TO MAKE FUN OF
SOMEONE'S SKIN COLOUR OR
RELIGION OR GENDER THESE
DAYS.
SO KIDS GET TEASED AND THAT
REALLY HURTS.

Then, Miriam talks to a woman in her office and says SO WHEN'S YOUR FIRST REAL
MEAL OF THE DAY?

The woman says SUPPER TIME.

Maureen narrates PEDIATRICIAN Miriam
KAUFMAN TREATS ADOLESCENTS
AT THE HOSPITAL FOR SICK
CHILDREN IN TORONTO.
SHE'S THE CO-AUTHOR OF “ALL
SHAPES AND SIZES,” PROMOTING
FITNESS AND SELF-ESTEEM IN
YOUR OVERWEIGHT CHILD.

Clips show Miriam taking measurements and performing tests on patients.

Miriam says A REALLY INTERESTING
QUESTION IS WHO IS THE OVER
WEIGHT CHILD?
WHAT SOME PEOPLE SAY IS
YOU'RE OVERWEIGHT IF YOU
WEIGH 20 percent MORE THAN YOUR
IDEAL BODY WEIGHT.
PEOPLE MEASURE BODY FAT OR
THEY CALCULATE BODY MASS
INDEX.
PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST
THINGS IS JUST KIND OF
LOOKING AT SOMEBODY, BUT WE
HAVE TO REALIZE THAT WE'RE
LOOKING THROUGH OUR CULTURAL
GLASSES AND THAT WE HAVE TO
TAKE THAT INTO ACCOUNT.

Maureen narrates NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOK AT
IT KIDS ARE GETTING HEAVIER.
A SPECIAL CLINIC AT
CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL IN
HAMILTON, ONTARIO SEES 250
NEW OVERWEIGHT PATIENTS
EVERY YEAR.

A man in his forties attends to an overweight girl in his office.

He says THE OTHER THING WE WANT
TO DO IS WE WANT TO MEASURE
YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE.

Maureen narrates RANDY CALVERT
RUNS THE EXERCISE AND
NUTRITION CENTRE.

Randy appears with the caption “Randy Calvert. Children’s exercise, nutrition ctr.”

He says THE MOST RECENT ESTIMATE
I'VE SEEN IN THE
POPULATION-BASED STUDIES IS
THAT IT'S PROBABLY ALMOST
ONE QUARTER OF ALL KIDS IN
NORTH AMERICA HAVE A WEIGHT
PROBLEM.
THEY'RE OVERWEIGHT.
AND IT'S GROWING AT A
TREMENDOUS WEIGHT.

Miriam says HAVING OVERWEIGHT PARENTS
OR GRANDPARENTS, OR YOU KNOW,
WHEREVER IN YOUR FAMILY TREE
IT COMES FROM, SEEMS TO BE
ONE OF THE BIGGEST FACTORS.

Now an overweight woman in her forties with wavy blond hair appears with the caption “Janice Thompson.”

She says I'VE BEEN OVERWEIGHT
SINCE I WAS ABOUT SIX.
AND I FIGURED THAT ONE OF MY
KIDS WOULD DEFINITELY TAKE
AFTER MYSELF.
AND I THOUGHT IF I CAN
PREVENT HER FROM GOING
THROUGH HALF THE THINS THAT
I HAD GONE THROUGH, AND I
STILL GO THROUGH, THEN I'D
BE HELPING HER A LOT.

Clips show Janice watching children play ice hockey.

Maureen says AT 11 YEARS OLD
KATIE THOMPSON MAY NOT KNOW
ALL THAT MUCH ABOUT GENETICS
OR ABOUT HER MOTHER'S
HISTORY OF FAILED DIETS, BUT
SHE KNOWS WHAT IT'S LIKE TO
BE DIFFERENT FROM THE REST
OF THE GIRLS.

Katie appears on screen talking. She has straight brown hair and wears glasses.

She says I GOT BIGGER AND MORE
KIDS MADE FUN OF ME.
THEY THINK THEY'RE SO COOL,
AND THEY WEAR ALL THESE
TIGHT, TIGHT SHIRTS, AND
LIKE THESE SEE-THROUGH
SHIRTS WITH A MUSCLE SHIRT
UNDERNEATH.

Maureen says AND THAT'S NOT YOU.

Katie says NO.

Janice says KIDS ARE SO CRUEL, AND AT
THAT YOUNG AGE THEY GET SO
AFFECTED EMOTIONALLY, THAT
IT'S REALLY SAD.
IT BOTHERS YOU AS A PARENT
TO SEE YOUR KID OVERWEIGHT.

Maureen narrates THAT'S WHY
JANICE THOMPSON TOOK HER
DAUGHTER TO THE CLINIC.

A female doctor in her thirties interviews Katie and says WOULD YOU EVER HAVE A
MORNING YOU WERE RUSHED AND
YOU MIGHT MISS YOUR
BREAKFAST?

Katie says NO.

Maureen says Katie GETS
MONTHLY COUNSELLING ON
NUTRITION AND THERE'S ONE
FOUR LETTER WORD SHE NEVER HEARS.
DIET.

The doctor says QUESTION, WHAT'S YOUR
FAVOURITE FOOD?

Katie says PIZZA.

The doctor says PIZZA IN.

She narrates SHE USE A LANGUAGE THAT
IS KID LANGUAGE, AND THEY
DON'T MAKE THEM FEEL THAT
THEY'RE HERE BECAUSE THEY'VE
DONE SOMETHING WRONG THEARX
BEING PUNISHED AND THEY HAVE
TO BE ON A REAL STRICT DIET.

Katie says LIKE STEAK OR SOMETHING.

Randy says WE PRESCRIBE NO DIETS OR
NO MAGIC MOTIONS OR ANYTHING
TO THE FAMILY, WE JUST TRY
AND NORMLIZE THEIR
BEHAVIOUR.

Katie says THEY TALK TO YOU NOT LIKE
“OH, YOU'RE SO BIG, AND YOU
HAVE TO LOSE WEIGHT AND YOU
HAVE TO DO THIS AND YOU HAVE
TO DO THAT.”

Maureen narrates BUT MANY
OVERWEIGHT KIDS DO END UP ON
A MERRY GO ROUND OF DIETING
AND DISAPPOINTMENT.
THE MESSAGE?
WHEN THE WEIGHT COMES DOWN,
APPROVAL GOES UP.

Miriam says A LOT OF THESE KIDS GET
TEASED AT HOME.
THEIR PARENTS CALL THEM FAT.
THEIR PARENTS TELL THEM THEY
SHOULD GO ON A DIET.
THEIR PARENTS WILL GIVE
EVERYBODY ELSE CHOCOLATE
CAKE THEY GET THE BANANA AND
THE APPLE.
THEY FEEL DEPRIVED.
PARENTS OFTEN DO THAT KIND
OF DEPRIVATION NOT JUST
BECAUSE THEY WANT THE CHILD
TO LOSE WEIGHT BUT AS A
PUNISHMENT.

Helena appears with a caption that reads “Helena Spring. Editor, ‘Canada Wyde.’”

She says MY FATHER WOULD SAY WHO
WOULD WANT TO SLEEP WITH YOU?
YOU'RE DISGUSTING, YOU'RE SO FAT.
WHO WOULD WANT TO MARRY YOU,
EVER DATE YOU.
HE OFFERED MONEY FOR ME TO
LOSE WEIGHT.
I WAS PUT IN THE HOSPITAL ON
27 CALORIES A DAY FOR DIETS
AT WEEKS AT A TIME.
I WAS GIVEN AMPHETAMINES AS
A KID.
I WAS ALWAYS TOLD I WASN'T
GOOD ENOUGH, I WASN'T SMART
ENOUGH, I WASN'T PRETTY
ENOUGH.
THERE WERE NO HUGS.
THERE WERE NO -- THERE WAS
NO WARMTH.

Maureen narrates NO HUG, SAYS
HELENA, AND SOMETIMES AT THE
DINNER TABLE, NOT ENOUGH FOOD.

Helena says AND I WOULD BE SO HUNGRY
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT I
WOULD SNEAK TO THE FRIDGE
AND OPEN IT UP BY THE LIGHT
OF THE FRIDGE DOOR AND GRAB
FOOD WITH MY HANDS AND EAT
IT UNTIL I WAS, I WAS AT
LEAST, I HAD FILLED SOME OF
THE HUNGER THAT WAS THERE.
AND THEN SPEARED IT OVER
WITH MY HANDS JUST TO MAKE
SURE THEY WOULDN'T SEE WHAT
WAS MISSING THE NEXT
MORNINGMENTWE SHOULDN'T HAVE
TO CHANGE PEOPLE.
PART OF IT IS BEING
ACCEPTED -- ACCEPTING
YOURSELF AS YOU ARE, BEING
HAPPY WITH YOURSELF AS YOU
ARE --

Janice says THAT DOESN'T WORK THOUGH.
YOU CAN TELL AN OVER WEIGHT
CHILD TO ENJOY LIFE AND
ACCEPT THEM, THEMSELVES THE
WAY THEY ARE.
BUT THAT'S OKAY FOR LIKE,
WHAT, TWO MINUTES IN AND
THEN THEY GO OUT INTO
SOCIETY.
AND THEY GET NAME-CALLING.
AND THEY DON'T GET PICKED
FOR TEAMS.
AND THEY GET THIS AND THEY
GET THAT AND THEY GET
REMARKS.
IT'S EVERYBODY ELSE THAT
DOESN'T ACCEPT THEM.

In Randy’s office, Katie sits on a stationary bike.

Randy says SO THIS IS A NICE, EASY RIDE.
NOT TOO FAST, ALL RIGHT?
READY?
LET'S GO FOR IT.

Katie pedals.

Maureen narrates AT THE EXERCISE
AND NUTRITION CENTRE, RANDY
CALVERT SAYS THERE'S ANOTHER
REASON OVER WEIGHT CHILDREN
SHOULD CHANGE.

Randy says WE HAVE TO TRY AND GAIN
CONTROL OF THEIR WEIGHT,
BECAUSE WE KNOW THE
POTENTIAL OF WHAT MIGHT
HAPPEN DOWN THE ROAD AS AN
ADULT.

As Katie pedals, he says ATTA GIRL.
KEEP GOING.

Maureen narrates HEALTH RISKS INCLUDING
HEART DISEASE AND HIGH BLOOD
PRESSURE, BUT HOW DO YOU
CONTROL DESTINY IF IT'S IN
YOUR DNA?

Randy says I THINK IT CAUSES THEM TO
HAVE A TENDENCY TO BECOME
OVERWEIGHT.
I HAVEN'T SEEN A GENE YET
THAT MAKES US GO TO THE
FRIDGE AND INTAKE THE
CALORIES OR WATCH THE TV.

A clip shows Katie watching TV.

Maureen narrates TURN ON THE TUBE,
BUT WATCH YOUR WEIGHT.
A STUDY PUBLISHED LAST YEAR
IN AN AMERICAN MEDICAL
JOURNAL CONFIRMS WHAT
PEDIATRICIANS LIKE MIRIAM
KAUFMAN HAVE ALWAYS
SUSPECTED.

Miriam says THE MORE TELEVISION A KID
WATCHES, THE MORE THEY WEIGH.
AND WE DON'T QUITE KNOW WHY
THAT IS.
WE KNOW WHEN YOU'RE WATCHING
TELEVISION YOU'RE NOT OUT
RUNNING AROUND, YOU'RE
WATCHING ADS FOR HIGH FAT,
LOW NUTRIENT KINDS OF FOOD,
YOU'RE OFTEN EATING WHILE
YOU'RE WATCHING TV WITHOUT
EVEN REALLY NOTICING WHAT IT
IS YOU'RE DOING SO, IT'S
PROBABLY A COMBINATION OF
ALL THOSE THINGS.
IT IS MUCH EASIER WHEN
YOU'RE A BUSY FAMILY TO STOP
BY A FAST FOOD PLACE AND
PICK UP FRIDAYS AND BURGER,
WHATEVER, AND THERE'S
NOTHING WRONG WITH EATING
THAT WAY EVERY ONCE IN A
WHILE.
BUT IF IT BECOMES HOW YOU'RE
ALWAYS EATING, IT IS KIND OF
HIGH FAT, HIGH SALT.
YOU KIND OF TRAIN YOUR KIDS
TO THINK THAT THAT'S WHAT
GOOD FOOD TASTES LIKE SO
THAT WHEN THEY GET GOOD FOOD
THEY DON'T EVEN RECOGNIZE IT.

Janice serves Katie and a boy a sandwich each.

She says YOU EAT YOUR LUNCH AND
THEN YOU CAN GO OUTSIDE.

Maureen narrates ULTIMATELY EXPERTS SAY
THE KEY TO DEALING WITH AN
OVERWEIGHT CHILD ISN'T DIET
OR EXERCISE, IT'S FAMILY
SUPPORT.
FOCUSING ON THE PERSON
INSTEAD OF THE SCALES.

Miriam says I THINK THE GOAL FOR
THESE KIDS IS TO BE HEALTHY,
PHYSICALLY FIT, ACTIVE
PEOPLE WHO ARE LOVED BY
THEIR PARENTS AND FEEL GOOD
ABOUT THEMSELVES AND THEIR
ABILITIES.
REGARDLESS OF THEIR SIZE.

Clips show Katie playing outside.

She says THEY SHOULDN'T MAKE FUN
OF THEM.
'CAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW.
DEEP INSIDE THEM, THEY MIGHT
BE A GREAT PERSON.

The clip ends.

Back in the studio, Maureen says WEATHER SOMEONE
IN YOUR FAMILY IS STRUGGLING
WITH A WEIGHT PROBLEM OR YOU
JUST WANT ADVICE ON HOW TO
GET HEALTH YER AND EAT
HEALTH YER, OUR GUEST THIS
AFTERNOON CAN HELP.
LIZ PEARSON IS A DIETICIAN
AND AUTHOR OF “WHEN IN DOUBT
EAT BROCCOLI” BUT LEAVE SOME
ROOM FOR CHOCOLATE.

Liz sits in the studio. She’s in her late thirties, with short wavy blond hair. She’s wearing a pale blue blazer over a pink shirt, and pearl earrings.
A picture of her book appears briefly. The cover features a picture of a smiling Liz holding a bunch of broccoli.

Maureen continues IN TORONTO, GIVE US A CALL...

A caption appears on screen. It reads "416-484-2727. 1-888-411-1234."
Then, it changes to “moretolife@tvo.org”

Maureen says LIZ, WELCOME BACK.

Liz says HI.

Maureen says WHEN YOU WATCH
THAT PIECE ABOUT KIDS
STRUGGLING WITH WEIGHT AND
ADULT WHOSE WERE ALWAYS OVER
WEIGHT, DO YOU HAVE AN
OPINION ON THE FAT
ACCEPTANCE VERSUS TRYING TO
GET THEM TO LOSE WEIGHT
ISSUE?

The caption changes to "Liz Pearson. Dietitian."

Liz says THE CHALLENGE WITH THE
FAT ACCEPTANCE IS THE HEALTH RISKS.
AND THAT THERE'S JUST NO
QUESTION IN TERMS OF
DIABETES AND HEART DISEASE
AND EVEN CERTAIN CANCERS
THAT YOU PUT YOURSELF AT
GREAT RISK WHEN YOU'RE OVER
WEIGHT.
SO AS MUCH AS I THINK IT'S
NICE TO SAY LET'S JUST
ACCEPT PEOPLE WHO ARE OVER
WEIGHT, I THINK THAT WE HAVE
TO DO OUR BEST JOB TO HELP
MAINTAIN, YOU KNOW, HEALTHY
WEIGHTS AND PREVENT FUTURE
WEIGHT GAIN.

Maureen says BUT I GUESS SOME
OF THE STRATEGIES THAT WE
HEARD, THE ONE WOMAN'S
FATHER HAD EMPLOYED, PAYING
HER TO LOSE WEIGHT,
DEGRADING HER, TELLING HER
NOBODY WILL EVER MARRY YOU,
OBVIOUSLY THOSE THINGS --

Liz says OH, TERRIBLE.
AND THAT SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN.
IN FACT I DON'T THINK YOU
SHOULD EVER PUT A CHILD ON A
SO-CALLED DIET.
I THINK IT'S THE ENVIRONMENT
YOU CREATE IN THE HOME IN
TERMS OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
AND WHAT FOODS ARE AVAILABLE
THAT ARE MORE IMPORTANT.
AND ONLY IF A CHILD ACTUALLY
COMES TO YOU AND SAYS “MOM,
I REALLY TO WANT DO
SOMETHING ABOUT MY WEIGHT,”
CAN YOU EVEN SIT DOWN AND
START SORT OF EVEN PUTTING
SOME SORT OF PLAN TOGETHER.
OTHERWISE THE BEST THING YOU
CAN DO IS JUST CREATE AN
ENVIRONMENT AND LOVE YOUR
KID, TOO.

Maureen says Dr. MIRIAM
KAUFMAN SAID IN THAT PIECE
IF A FAMILY IS ALWAYS EATING
FRENCH FRIES OR FAST FOOD,
KIDS GET THE IMPRESSION THAT
THAT'S WHAT GOOD FOOD TASTES
LIKE.
THEY DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND
IS THAT RIGHT?
CAN WE EARN FROM AN EARLY
AGE TO CONTINUE OUR
SHOULD-CONDITION OUR KIDS TO
LIKE SALTY OR HI FAT FOOD?

Liz says I DO THINK THEY CAN GET
IN THAT.
IT'S INTERESTING, HOW EASY
AND QUICK IS IT TO PACK A
PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH?
WHAT IF IF ON THE WAY TO THE
GAME INSTEAD OF STOPPING AT
McDonald’s YOU BROUGHT A
PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH.
A LOT OF KIDS DON'T GET IT
AT SCHOOL BECAUSE OF THE
ALLERGIES, THAT'S PROBABLY
THE PERFECT TIME.
I THINK THERE'S POSSIBLY
LOTS OF THINGS PARENTS CAN
DO, EVEN WHEN THEY'RE BUSY
KIDS CAN STILL EAT HEALTHY.

Maureen says HALLOWEEN IS
COMING UP AND MY HOUSE IS
GOING TO BE FULL OF CANDY.
IN FACT THEY'RE ALREADY
EATING THE CANDY I'M TRYING
TO SAVE FOR TOMORROW NIGHT.
WHAT CAN WE DO THERE TO SORT
OF METE IT OUT IN SMALL
PORTIONS.

Liz says YEAH, IT'S TOUGH.
THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE THAT
SAY LET THEM GO CRAZY FOR A
COUPLE OF DAYS AND THEN TAKE
THE CANDY AWAY AND SAY
THAT'S IT.
I GET MY DAUGHTER TO TRY TO
SHARE IT WITH AS MANY PEOPLE
AS POSSIBLE.
EVERYBODY HAS A LITTLE BIT
AND THAT'S IT.
BUT I THINK THAT YOU JUST
HAVE TO -- YOU CAN'T SAY YOU
CAN'T HAVE IT, BECAUSE THAT
WOULDN'T BE FAIR.
SO I THINK YOU GET THEM TO
SHARE IT GIVE IT AWAY, AND I
THINK SOMETIMES IT IS A GOOD
IDEA TO PUT A LIMIT TON AND
SAY BEYOND A CERTAIN TIME,
THAT'S IT FOR THE CANDY.
BECAUSE IT CAN LAST FOR
YEARS.

Maureen says WE ALWAYS HAVE A
BIT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE
BOWL THAT NOBODY WANTS
ANYMORE, AND THAT'S STILL
THERE AT CHRISTMAS.
BUT YOU'VE BROUGHT ALONG
SOME THINGS TODAY THAT ARE
HEALTH YER CHOICES FOR KIDS'
LUNCHBOXES OR MAYBE EVEN
HALLOWEEN.
DO YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT
SOME OF THOSE?

Liz says SURE, I WILL LOVE TO
FIRST OF ALL ONE OF THE
THINGS IS A LOT OF TIMES
MILK IS NOT BEING PUT IN THE
LUNCHBOX.
AND THERE'S NO REASON-GHARB
I DO WITH MY DAUGHTER IS
I'LL PUT A MILL INCOME THE
CONDITION TAKENER, WHEN SHE
WAIBINGS UP IN THE MORNING I
PUT THIS IN THE FREEZER FOR
45 MINUTES TO AN HOUR, IT
STAYS PERFECTLY WONDERFULLY
COLD FOR THE WHOLE MORNING
WHEN SHE GETS IT AT LUNCH
TIME IT'S PERFECT.
YOU CAN ADD A BIT OF
CHOCOLATE SYRUP OR
STRAWBERRY, NO PROBLEM, AND
IT'S JUST WE NEED TO GET OUR
KIDS TO HAVE THEIR MILL AND
BEING THAT'S ONE OF THE
GREAT WAYS.
AND WHEN THEY'RE PACKING
MILK, THEY COULD EVEN PACK
CEREAL.
AND SOMETIMES WHEN KIDS GET
BORED OR THEY'RE IN A RUT,
LITERALLY IT CAN BE FUN TO
BRING A CEREAL AND A SPOON
AND POUR THEIR MILK ON
INSTEAD OF THE SAME OLD
SANDWICH ROUTINE DAY AFTER
DAY.

Maureen says WHAT CEREAL ARE
YOU ADVOCATING?

Liz says THIS IS ACTUALLY CHEERIOS,
IT'S A WHOLE GRAIN CEREAL.
SCH REDDIES IS ALSO A WHOLE
GRAIN.
STUDIES ARE SHOWING WE'RE
NOT DOING THE WHOLE GRAIN
THING WELL.
I FOUND IT INTERESTING THIS
IN THAT PIECE WE WERE
WATCHING, THE GIRL IN THE
END WHERE SHE WAS SITTING
DOWN TO HER LUNCH, SHE WAS
EATING A SANDWICH PLAYED
WITH -- MADE WITH WHITE
BREAD.
KEY GRAINS PLAY A ROLE IN
APPETITE, WHEN YOU EAT WHOLE
FIBRE YOU FEEL FULLER SO
WE'RE ET BETTER TO SERVE OUR
KIDS WHOLE GRAIN CEREALS AS
WELL AS BREADS.

Maureen says IS YOGURT A
SUBSTITUTE FOR MILK AT LUNCH?

Liz says CERTAINLY IT'S A GREAT
THING TO ADD IN THERE.
THE ONLY PROBLEM IS YOGURT
AND CHEESE DON'T CONTAIN
VITAMIN D, IMPORTANT FOR THE
ABSORPTION OF CALCIUM SO YOU
WANT TO MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD
GETS SOME FLUID MILK DURING
THE DAY.
THERE'S LOTS OF FUN THINGS
WITH YOGURTS.
THERE'S THE SQUEEZABLE
YOGURT, AND WHEN YOU CAN
HAVE IT IN A FUN FORMAT,
KIDS CAN FEEL LIKE THEY'RE
GETTING A TREAT EVEN THOUGH
THEY'RE GETTING SOME GREAT
NUTRITION ALONG THERE.
THERE'S ALSO THE DRINKABLE
YOGURTS.
SO THOSE ARE LOFTS FUN, AND
THEY TASTE PRETTY GOOD AS
WELL.

Maureen says DOES THAT HAVE
TO BE KEPT COLD WOULD YOU SAY?

Liz says AGAIN, I WOULD PUT IT IN
THE FREEZER FOR 45 MINUTES,
JUST WHILE THE CHILD IS
GETTING READY IN THE
MORNING, AND IT STAYS
WONDERFULLY COLD DURING THE
ENTIRE TIME.
HERE WE HAVE ALSO -- YOU
KNOW THERE'S A LOT OF THE
FLAVOURED MILKS YOU CAN BUY.
BUY THE MILK, NOT THE MILK
SHAKES.
A LOT OF MIL BEING SHAKES
HAVE A LOT MORE SUGAR ADDED
AND NOT NEARLY AS MUCH
CALCIUM.
SO MAKE SURE IT'S THE MILK.
NOW I'D LOVE TO SEE THESE
ACTUALLY IN A SMALLER SIZE.

Maureen says THAT'S QUITE A BIT, ISN'T IT?

Liz picks up a bottle and says IT IS.
THIS ONE HERE HAS OVER 300
CALORIES.
THAT'S MY BIGGEST THING
ABOUT THESE.
THAT'S I DIDN'T LIKE IT WHEN
YOU MAKE IT YOURSELF, YOU
CAN CONTROL THE PORTION SIZE MORE.

Maureen says OKAY.

Then, Liz shows Maureen a book and says THIS WAS A GREAT BOOK I
JUST HAPPENED TO PICK UP
RECENTLY, AND IT'S LUNCHBOX
LETTERS.
AND IT'S ALL DIFFERENT FUN
LITTLE LETTER, YOU FILL OUT
EVERY DAY AND THROW IN YOUR
KIDS' LUNCHBOX AND THEY HAVE
JOKES AND LITTLE “I LOVE
YOU” NOTES AND “YOU'RE
GREAT” NOTES AND A SPECIAL
NOTE FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY SO
AGAIN YOU DON'T HAVE TO HE
WILL FEEL YOU CAN PUT A
TREAT IN YOU CAN PUT OTHER
THINGS IN THE LUNCHBOX TO
MAKE IT A LOT OF FUN.

Maureen says IT'S A CUTE IDEA.
IT'S CALLED LUNCHBOX LETTERS.
AND IT'S BY CAROL SPORANDI
SCOMPOMD BILL ZIMMER MAN IF
ANYBODY'S LOOKING FOR IT IN
THE STORE.
WE'VE GOT A CALLER ON THE
LINE.
IF YOU WANT TO GIVE LIZ A
CALL AND AND FOR A QUESTION
ABOUT VITAMINS, SUPPLEMENTS,
ANYTHING TO DO WITH
NUTRITION AND DIET HERE ARE
THE NUMBERS...

The numbers and email reappear briefly.

Maureen says DEBBIE IS IN
PERTH.
HI DEBBIE, WELCOME.

The Caller says HI.

Maureen says HI.

The Caller says I HAVE A NINE,
ELEVEN AND 17-YEAR-OLD.
THE NINE-YEAR-OLD I HAVE THE
BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH AS FAR
AS NUTRITION GOES.
WE DO SEND THE YOPLAAIT, WE
SEND THE YOGURT DRINK, THEY
TAKE A FRUIT EVERY LUNCH, I
USUALLY SEND A PUDDING OR AN
APPLESAUCE, BUT HE'S A
REAL -- WE CALL HIM THE
JUNKIE KID IN THE HOUSE.
IS THERE SUCH A THING AS
BEING TOO HARD ON HIM?
AT HOME WE DO HAVE THE HAS
SANNIA, THE PASTA LASAGNA,
WE HAVE LOTS OF WHOLE GRAINS,
WE DON'T USE WHITE BREAD, I
TRY NOT TO BRING IT INTO THE
HOUSE.
THEY DO GET IT ONCE IN A
WHILE JUST BECAUSE THEY
FIGURE IT'S A TREAT.
CAN I BE BEING TOO HARD ON
THIS NINE-YEAR-OLD?
HE IS THE SAME SIZE --
EVERYBODY THINKS HE'S A TWIN
OF THE 11-YEAR-OLD.
HE'S A SIZE 14.
THE 11-YEAR-OLD'S A SIZE 12.
CAN I BE BEING TOO HARD ON
HIM?
I'M TRYING TO STRESS ABOUT
CHOLESTEROL AND ALL THAT TO
HIM.
MY SIDE OF THE FAMILY IS
DEFINITELY BIG SIDE OF THE
FAMILY.
WE'RE ALL BIG IN MY SIDE OF
THE FAMILY, BUT MY SON SEEMS
TO BE TAKING THAT UP, TOO.

Liz says YOU KNOW, I THINK IT'S
REALLY IMPORTANT, RATHER
THAN ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT IT
WITH YOUR CHILD AND SAYING
“YOU CAN'T HAVE THIS OR
WATCH THIS OR WATCH THAT,” I
THINK IT'S A LOT EASIER JUST
TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT
WHERE THAT CAN HAPPEN SO FOR
EXAMPLE IF YOUR CUPBOARD IS
LOADED WITH DUNKAROOS AND
TWINKIES AND OTHER THINGS
THE APPLES AND THE FRUIT
DON'T STAND A CHANCE SO I
ALWAYS SAY ELIMINATE THE
COMPETITION.
AND IT'S OKAY TO HAVE A FEW
THING, BUT YOU'VE GOT TO
CREATE THE ENVIRONMENT WHERE
IT'S EASY TO EAT HEALTHY, OR
IT'S EASY TO BE PHYSICALLY
ACTIVE.
AND YOU KNOW, YOU DO FUN
THINGS ARE ARE OUTINGS WHERE
YOU ARE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE.
THERE WAS A QUOTE I LOVE.
IF EXERCISE WERE A DRUG IT
WOULD BE THE MOST PRESCRIBED
MEDICINE IN THE WORLD.
ONE OF THE BEST THINGS WE
COULD EVER DO FOR YOUR KIDS
IS TO KEEP THEM PHYSICALLY
ACTIVE.
BUT IN TERMS OF TALKING
ABOUT THE FOOD AND SAYING
YOU CAN'T HAVE OR YOU
SHOULDN'T HAVE THAT'S WHERE
YOU START TO SET UP
SOMETIMES A VERY NEGATIVE
WITH YOUR CHILD THEIR MIND.
THEY WANT IT THAT MUCH MORE.
THEY START HAVING FEELINGS,
YOU KNOW, IN TERMS OF
SELF-ESTEEM.
SO I PREFER TO CREATE THE
ENVIRONMENT.

Maureen says IS THERE ANY
POINT AT AGE NINE IN TALKING
ABOUT THINGS LIKE HEART
DISEASE AND DIABETES AND,
YOU KNOW, OBVIOUSLY DEBBIE'S
GOT A FAMILY HISTORY HERE TO
WORRY ABOUT AS WELL, AND
THAT'S A LEGACY SHE'LL PASS
ONTO HIM, BUT ON THE OTHER
HAND HE'S ONLY NINE.

Liz says I THINK YOU CAN TALK
ABOUT IT BUT AGAIN IN A VERY
POSITIVE WAY.
YOU KNOW, KEEPING YOUR HEART
HEALTHY, KEEPING THE BLOOD
FLOWING AS OPPOSED TO SORT
OF IN A REALLY NEGATIVE SORT
OF TONE WHERE, OH, YOU KNOW,
YOU'RE GOING DIE OR YOU'RE
GOING TO -- YOU KNOW THAT
SORT OF THING.
I JUST THINK IT'S THE TONE
THAT YOU USE THAT IS
CERTAINLY MORE IMPORTANT.
BUT I'VE HAD KIDS COME FOR
LUNCH WHERE THEY START GOING
“OH, I CAN'T EAT THAT, IT
CONTAINS TOO MUCH FAT.”
AND I'M AMAZED WHAT
TERMINOLOGY AND HOW THEY
TALK ABOUT FOOD IN SUCH A
NEGATIVE WAY.
AND I TRY NOT TO TALK ABOUT
FOOD IN SUCH NEGATIVE SORT
OF FASHION, BECAUSE ALL
THINGS CAN FIT IN MOD
INDICATION.

Maureen says IF DEBBIE'S SON
ALREADY LOVES JUNK FOOD, AS
SHE CALLS IT HOW DO YOU --
DO YOU EVER LET HIM HAVE IT?
YOU WOULDN'T REALLY TO WANT
SET IT UP AS A TREAT FOR
SPECIAL OCCASIONS OR WHEN
YOU'RE GOOD --

Liz says YEAH, I AGREE.
SO I THINK THAT'S AGAIN --
KEEP THE HOME ENVIRONMENT AS
THE SORT OF NICE ENVIRONMENT,
WHEN YOU GO OUT FOR MEALS OR
DINNER, THAT'S THE TIME THAT
I THINK IT'S, THAT BECOMES
THE TREAT.

Maureen says THE FRENCH FRIES,
YOU CAN ORDER THAT WITH YOUR
FISH, WHATEVER.

Liz says YEAH, EXACTLY.

Maureen says GOOD LUCK,
DEBBIE.
A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE THAT
PROBLEM.
JENNIFER IS IN OSHAWA.
HI, JENNIFER.

The Caller says HI.
I JUST HAD A QUESTION.
I'M 20 YEARS OLD AND I'VE
BEEN OVER WEIGHT THE
MAJORITY OF MY LIFE AND I
ALWAYS HAVE A PROBLEM
STICKING TO ANY TYPE OF
EATING PLAN.
LIKE I NEVER STICK TO IT MY
WHOLE LIFE, MY FAMILY'S
TRIED TO CHANGE IT, BUT
THEY'VE ALWAYS EATEN IT IN
FRONT OF ME AND THEN I'M NOT
SUPPOSED TO HAVE IT SO I
DON'T KNOW HOW TO STICK TO
THINGS.

Maureen says YOU'RE SAYING
EATING PLAN BUT DO YOU
REALLY MEAN THESE ARE DIETS
YOU'VE TRIED?

The Caller says I'VE TRIED LOTS OF --
I'VE EVEN ORDER RICHARD
SIMMONS THINGS.
SLIMFAST, LOTS OF THINGS.
IT'S BEEN -- I'VE BEEN LIKE
THIS SINCE I WAS ABOUT SEVEN
YEARS OLD.

Maureen says TELL US A LITTLE
MORE THOUGH ABOUT WHAT YOU
WOULD EAT IN THE AVERAGE
DAY.

The Caller says WELL, WE'D EAT NORMAL
MEERBLGS LIKE BREAKFAST,
EGGS AND TOAST, THEN A
SANDWICH FOR LUNCH, BUT THEN
THERE'D ALWAYS BE PIE AROUND,
EVERYBODY ELSE WAS EATING IT
BUT I WASN'T SUPPOSED TO
TAKE SECONDS OR I WASN'T
SUPPOSED TO HAVE IT.
I WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE AN
APPLE OR A FRUIT AND NOW I
JUST DON'T LIKE THOSE FOODS
ANYMORE.

Maureen says DO YOU LIVE AT HOME STILL.

The Caller says YES.

Maureen says IS THERE STILL PIE EVERY NIGHT?

The Caller says PRETTY MUCH.
I DON'T EAT IT ANYMORE BUT
THERE'S OTHER THINGS.
JOB HOW TO STICK TO
ANYTHING.

Maureen says THEY CALL THIS
WILL POWER.

Liz says WELL, CERTAINLY IT'S
TOUGH WHEN AGAIN THE HOME
ENVIRONMENT MAKES IT MORE
DIFFICULT.
BUT ONE OF THE BEST STARTING
POINTS IS FOR SOMEBODY TO
ACTUALLY SIT DOWN WITH
SOMEBODY WHO WANTS TO LOSE
WEIGHT AND FIRST GET A
REALLY GREAT HANDLE ON WHAT
FOODS DO YOU LIKE?
AND I'M SURE THERE'S GOT TO
BE SOME FOODS ON THERE THAT
ARE ACTUALLY HEALTHY, GOOD
FOODS AND START TO ABOUT THE
PLAN AROUND THAT AS OPPOSED
TO TELLING SOMEBODY “THIS IS
THE DIET YOU HAVE TO
FOLLOW.”
THE MORE WE CAN CUSTOMIZE
IT -- YOU KNOW, IF WE LEARN
THERE ARE CERTAIN SANDWICHES
OR WHOLE GRAIN BREADS OR
THERE MUST BE SOME FRUITS
OUT THERE THAT SHE REALLY
LIKE, THEN LEARNING HOW TO
INCORPORATE THOSE OR KEEPING
THAT AS A STARTING POINT IS
A GREAT WAY TO GO.
THE OTHER THING, LET'S TAKE
THE PIE EXAMPLE.
LET'S SAY SHE FOUND A REALLY
GREAT FROZEN YOGURT.
THERE'S A LOT OF DELICIOUS
FROZEN YOGURTS, AND EVERY
NIGHT WHEN THE FAMILY WAS
HAVING THEIR PIECE OF PIE,
SHE HAD A SMALL SERVING OF
THIS FROZEN YOGURT, SHE
WOULDN'T FEEL LIKE SHE WAS
DEPRIVING HERSELF, YES -- SO
YOU WANT TO HAVE SOMETHING
SO YOU DO STILL FEEL THAT
IT'S GREAT AND THERE ARE
LOTS OF GREAT THINGS OUT
THERE TO HAVE, LIKE FROZEN
YOGURT THAT ARE HEALTHY BUT
STILL GOOD FOR YOU.

Maureen says WOULD BE NICE IF
THE FAMILY COULD LIMIT THE
PIE TO ONCE A WEAK OR
SOMETHING --

Liz says WELL IT WOULD BE BELTER
FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY.

Maureen says YEAH.

Liz says YEAH.
GET UP AFTER SUPPER AND
GO FOR A PUCK OR SOMETHING
INSTEAD OF DESERT.

Maureen says DESERT EVERY NIGHT, IT
WAS NEVER THAT GHON MY HOUSE
AND SO I'VE CARRIED ON THAT
TRADITION AND WE DON'T
REALLY HAVE DESERT EVERY
NIGHT.
BUT IF -- ARE THERE HEALTHY
DESERTS?
DO YOU BELIEVE IN “DESERT?”

Liz says YOU KNOW, I DON'T BELIEVE
IN DESERT IN TERMS OF --
MOST TIMES WHEN YOU'VE HAD
YOUR MEAL YOU'VE HAD ENOUGH
CALORIES.
WHAT WE'LL DO IN TERMS OF
DESERT IS BEFORE THE KIDS GO
TO BED OR LATER IN THE
EVENING, THAT'S THE TIME
WHEN THEY GET THEIR
SO-CALLED DESERT BUT
GENERALLY THEY'LL HAVE
EITHER A FROZEN YOGURT OR
SOME KIND OF FRUIT.
AND I THINK THAT'S A MUCH
BETTER WAY TO DO IT.
CERTAINLY THE RESEARCH HAS
SHOWN SMALLER, MORE FREQUENT
MEALS CAN PLAY A KEY ROLE IN
HELPING TO MAINTAIN A
HEALTHY WEIGHT AS OPPOSED TO
SKIPPING MEALS AND HAVING
LARGE ONCE.

Maureen says JENNIFER ALSO
MENTIONED BREAKFAST.
BACON AND EGGS AND TOAST IN
THE MORNING.
WOULD THAT LEAD TO A WEIGHT
PROBLEM IF THAT WAS YOUR
BREAKFAST EVERY MORNING?

Liz says YEAH, I LOVE TO SEE
CEREAL ON THE MENU, AGAIN A
WHOLE GRAIN OR HIGH FIBRE
CEREAL IS -- AGAIN, THE
FIBRE REALLY DOES PLAY A
ROLE IN KEEPING PEOPLE FULL.
AND IT'S ALSO REALLY HEALTHY
FOR YOUR HEART AND OTHER
THINGS.

Maureen says OKAY.
GOOD LUCK, JENNIFER, THANKS
FOR YOUR CALL.
LAURA IS IN THUNDER BAY.
HI LAURA.

The Caller says YES, HI.

Maureen says HI.

The Caller says I HAVE A LITTLE
GUY 18 MONTHS OLD, AND HE
DOESN'T SEEM TO WANT TO
DRINK ANY MILK.
NOW I'M GETTING CALCIUM INTO
HIM BY GIVING HIM THE ORANGE
JUICE THAT HAS THE CALCIUM
ADDED INTO IT.
BUT I'M WONDERING HOW DO I
GET VITAMIN D INTO HIM?
WHAT WOULD I GIVE HIM?

Liz says RIGHT.
WELL IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO
GET VITAMIN D IF THEY'RE NOT
DRINKING FLUID MILK.
FATTY FISH LIKE SALMON OR A
LITTLE BIT IN EGGS, BUT
REALLY PEOPLE AREN'T HAVING
THAT EVERYDAY.
SO IF YOU'RE NOT GETTING HIM
TO DRINK MILK URNTD BE
CONSIDERING A VITAMIN
SUPPLEMENT, JUST LIKE A
MULTI VITAMIN PREPARATION
THAT CONTAINS VITAMIN D.
OTHERWISE YOU JUST CAN'T GET
IT.
THEY ARE LOOKING AT
SUPPLEMENTING YOGURT VERY
SOON WITH VITAMIN D AND THAT
WILL HELP A LOT BECAUSE A
LOT MORE KIDS WILL EAT
YOGURT THAN THEY WILL FLUID
MILK.
AND THE OTHER THING IS KEEP
INTRODUCING THE MILK.
THERE'S A CERTAIN AGE, I
FIND, ESPECIALLY AROUND 18
MONTHS, TWO YEARS, WHERE A
LOT OF KIDS SORT OF ALMOST
TURN AWAY FROM MILK.
BUT I HAVE WHAT I CALL A
MILK ONLY RULE.
YOU KNOW CERTAINLY AT LUNCH
TIME AND DINNER TIME.
NOT AT BREAKFAST BECAUSE MY
DAUGHTER HAS MILK ON HER
CEREAL, AND THAT'S THE ONLY
OPTION THERE IS FOR A
BEVERAGE.
AND MY LITTLE ONE NOW WHO'S
TWO AND A HALF, THERE WAS A
TIME WHEN SHE'D SORT OF, YOU
KNOW, NOT DRINK IT NOT AT
ALL.
NOT MAKE A BIG DEAL, BUT
KEEP PUTTING IT ON THE TABLE
AND THE MORE TIMES IT'S BEEN
THERE, THE MORE TIMES SHE'S
LIKELY TO HAVE IT.

Maureen says LET'S JUST ASK
LAURA.
WILL HE DRINK CHOCOLATE
MILK?

The Caller says NO, HE REALLY DOESN'T.
HE DOESN'T LIKE CHEESE OR
ANY REAL DAIRY PRODUCT, HE
DOESN'T LIKE.

Maureen says IS THIS RECENT?
BECAUSE HE WAS ON A
BOTTLE --

The Caller says WELL, HE WAS ON A BOTTLE.
HE KIND OF WEANED HIMSELF ON
THE BOTTLE -- OFF THE BOTTLE
AND NOW THERE'S JUST
NOTHING.

Maureen says BECAUSE I HAVE HEARD YOU
SAY LIZ, IF THEY'LL DRINK
CHOCOLATE MILK OR STRAWBERRY
FLAVOURED, GIVE THEM THAT.
THAT'S BETTER THAN NO MILK
AT ALL.

Liz says NEW YORK UNIVERSITY STUDY
SHOWED KIDS GING TWICE AS
MUCH MILK WHEN IT'S
FLAVOURED.
THERE'S NO PROBLEM FLAVORING
IT OR SOMETIMES HAVING IT AS
A HOT CHOCOLATE OR ADDING IT
TO THINGS LIKE OATMEAL, A
LOTS OF PEOPLE WILL ADD
WATER, ADDING MINIMUM MILK
TO DIFFERENT THINGS WHEREVER
YOU CAN ADD IT IN.

Maureen says SHE'S GIVING HIM
ORANGE JUICE FORTIFIED WITH CALCIUM.
WILL HE GET ENOUGH
CALCIUM --

Liz says ONE CUP OF FORTIFIED
ORANGE JUICE CONTAINS THE
SAME AMOUNT OF CALCIUM AS
ONE GLASS OF MILK.
I DO THINK THE FORTIFIED
ORANGE JUICE IS A GREAT IDEA,
EVEN WHEN PEOPLE DRINK MILK
BECAUSE SURVEYS ARE SHOWING
PEOPLE AREN'T MEETING THE
CALCIUM REQUIREMENTS
RECOMMENDED.
BY ADDING A FORTIFIED ORANGE
JUICE THEY'RE JUST THAT MUCH
MORE LIKELY TO DO IT.
YOU DO WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU
STILL HAVE THE MILK BECAUSE
VITAMIN D, RIBOFLAVIN, B-12,
THOSE ARE NUTRIENTS YOU'RE
NOT GOING TO GET FROM ORANGE
JUICE THAT ARE REALLY
IMPORTANT IN MILK.

Maureen says HOPE THERE'S A
TURNAROUND THERE.
THANKS, LAURA.
TERESA IS IN AJAX.
HI, TERESA?

The Caller says GOOD DAY.
I'VE GOT A DAUGHTER THAT
ACTUALLY EATS VERY WELL AND
DRINKS VERY WELL, BUT WE
KIND OF NOTICE WHEN WE
COMPARE HER TO OTHER
TODDLERS SHE SEEMS TO BE A
LITTLE CHUBBIER AND MY
MOTHER IS OVERWEIGHT WE'RE
WONDERING IF IT'S TOO MUCH
JUICE OR FRUIT, BECAUSE SHE
DRINKS FOUR GLASSES OF MILK
A DAY PLUS AFTER EVERY MEAL
SHE ASKS FOR A FRUIT.
SO SOMETIMES SHE WON'T
FINISH HER MEAL AND THEN
SHE'LL GO AND HAVE A FRUIT.
AND SHE IS QUITE CAPABLE OF
EATING A WHOLE PEAR, KIWI,
APPLE IS THERE TOO MUCH
NATURAL SUGARS GOING INTO
HER SYSTEM AT THREE AND A
HALF THEN IF SHE HAS THREE
FRUITS A DAY?

Liz says FIRST OF ALL, WHEN YOU
SAID FOUR GLASS OF MILK A
DAY, WHAT TYPE OF MILK IS
SHE DRINKING?

The Caller says WE'VE BROUGHT HER DOWN IT
1 percent.

Liz says THAT'S GREAT.
CERTAINLY AFTER AGE TWO
THEY CAN BE ON A LOWER FAT
MILL AND BEING IF SHE'S
DRINKING THAT MUCH IT'S
IMPORTANT HE HAS 1 percent OR EVEN
SKIM FINE, BUT YOU CERTAINLY
DON'T WANT THE HIGHER FAT
MILKS.
IN TERMS OF FRUIT, I
WOULDN'T BE CONCERNED ABOUT
THAT.
FRUIT JUICE I WOULD BE
CONCERNED ABOUT BECAUSE IT
IS A VERY CONCENTRATED
SOURCE OF CALORIES.
MOST KIDS SHOULD REALLY GETS
NO MORE THAN ABOUT ONE HALF
TO ONE CUP OF FRUIT JUICE IN
A GIVEN DAY.
THE REST OF IT SHOULD BE
COMING FROM WHOLE FRUIT.
THE OTHER THING IS WHENEVER
YOU CAN, GIVING VEGETABLE,
THEY HAVE A LOT OF GREAT
NUTRITION AND A LOT LESS
CALORIES THAN ANY FOOD,
REALLY.
SO FOR EXAMPLE A LOT OF KIDS
LOVE BABY CARROTS SERVED
WITH A LOW-FAT DIP INSTEAD
OF FRUIT MAYBE YOU CAN GIVE
THAT SO KIM TIME, BUT I HATE
TO EVEN SAY LIMIT FRUIT
BECAUSE IT'S SUCH A HEALTHY
FOOD.
THE OTHER THING IS I WOULD
LOOK VERY STRONGLY AT HER
ACTIVITY PATTERNS.
AGAIN THE RESEARCH IS SO
CLEAR IN TERMS OF WHAT ROLE
THAT PLAYS IN REDUCING THE
RISK OF BEING OVERWEIGHT.
AND YOU KNOW, THAT SHE'S NOT
SPENDING THE TIME WATCHING
DIVISION, THAT YOU'RE GOING
OUT FOR WALKS OR THE
PLAYGROUND ON A REGULAR
BASIS AND MAKE THAT A REALLY
REGULAR PART OF HER LIFE.

Maureen says WHEN YOU LOOK AT
PICTURES OF MY DAUGHTER,
THANK GOSH SHE CAN'T WATCH
THIS SHOW BECAUSE HERE I AM,
SHE'S A VERY CHUNKY LITTLE
TODDLER UP TO ABOUT AGE FIVE
AND THEN WHEN WE PUT HER IN
DANCING LESSON, SHE JUST
SLIMMED RIGHT DOWN.
IT'S FUNNY TO SEE A KID
WHO DIDN'T STAY HEAVY LIKE
THE BABY PICTURES WERE
INTIMATING SHE WAS GOING TO
I REALLY THINK THAT -- I
MEAN, THREE AND A HALF, YOU
DON'T SIGN THEM UP FOR
SOCCER OR SOFTBALL AT THAT
AGE, IT'S GOING TO COME AS
THEY GET MORE ACTIVE.

Liz says YES, IT IS IT WILL.
BUT THINGS LIKE GOING TO THE
PARK OR LETTING THEM PLAY ON
THE CLIMBER, THOSE THINGS
ARE STILL GREAT FOR LITTLE
ONES BUT CURRENT
RECOMMENDATIONS ARE THAT
KIDS SHOULD GET ONE HOUR OF
VIGOROUS ACTIVITY PER DAY!
AND IF THEY'RE NOT GETTING
ONE HOUR VIGOROUS, THEY
SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST ONE
HALF HOUR VIGOROUS AND ONE
HOUR LIGHT, WHETHER IT BE
WALKING TO SCHOOL.
AND BECAUSE A LOT OF KIDS
DON'T WALK TO SCHOOL
ANYMORE, AND BECAUSE KIDS
AREN'T ALLOWED TO PLAY
OUTSIDE LIKE WE USED TO,
WHERE PARENTS DIDN'T HAVE TO
SUPERVISE ALL THE TIME,
THERE'S JUST MUCH LESS TIME
TO BE ACTIVE.

Maureen says ABSOLUTELY.
GOOD LUCK WITH THAT, TERESA.
THANKS FOR YOUR CALL.
WE'RE TALKING ABOUT DIET AND
NUTRITION AND HEALTHY EATING
THIS AFTERNOON ABOUT LIZ
PEARSON.
SHE'S A INDICT TRIGS AND
AUTHOR OF “WHEN IN DOUBT EAT
BROCCOLI KWGHTS BUT SAVE A
LITTLE RAM FOR CHOCOLATE.
WE SHOULD TALK ABOUT
CHOCOLATE, GIVE US A CALL
WITH YOUR QUESTIONS.

The numbers and email reappear briefly.

Maureen continues WHAT IS THE LATEST ABOUT
CHOCOLATE -- ACTUALLY I'M
READING GOOD THINGS ABOUT
CHOCOLATE.

Liz says IT'S REALLY QUITE EXCITING.
CHOCOLATE, PARTICULARLY DARK
CHOCOLATE AND CHOCOLATE
THAT'S BEEN PROCESSED IN A
CERTAIN WAY IS VERY RICH IN
A TYPE OF PLANT COMPOUND
CALLED APPROXIMATELY POLYPHENOLS
WHICH FUNCTION AS
ANTI-OXIDANT NOTICE BOD
DISPEECHLT THEY ARE DOING
QUITE EXTENSIVE RESEARCH,
PARTICULARLY MARS, WHO MAKES
SNICKERS AND M and Ms HAVE
BEEN SORT OF AT THE
FOREFRONT OF THAT RESEARCH.

Maureen says I WONDER WHY.

Liz says THEY ACTUALLY NOW HAVE A
NEW LABEL ON THEIR PRODUCT.
YOU CAN LACKTOR IT.
IT'S THE COCOA PRO LABEL
THAT GUARANTEES THESE
POLYPHENOLS ARE NOT
DESTROYED IN THE PROCESSING
WHICH IS WHAT HAPPENS IN A
LOT OF CHOCK SLOOCHLT IN
THESE CLINICAL TRIALS WITH
HUMANS THEY HAVE FUND THAT
THEY'VE BEEN ABLE TO REDUCE
BLOOD CLOTTING TIME AND
THEY'VE ALSO BEEN ABLE TO
MEASURE ANTI-OXIDANT
ACTIVITY IN THE BLOOD, AND
IT'S BEEN REALLY QUITE
REMARKABLE.
DOES THAT MEAN YOU START
EATING CHOCOLATE ALL THE
TIME, I MEAN NO.
I MEAN THERE'S A CALORIE AND
FAT TRADE-OFF YOU HAVE TO
KEEP IN MIND.
I'VE ALWAYS SAID CHOCOLATE
IN MODERATION, YOU KNOW A
LITTLE BIT HERE OR THERE.
BUT YOU KNOW THE FUNNY THING
IS YOUR KID MIGHT ACTUALLY
BE BETTER REACHING FOR
M and Ms AS OPPOSED TO ANOTHER
TYPE OF CHOCOLATE, BASED ON
THE RESEARCH THEY'VE DONE
WITH THE ANTI-OXIDANT
ACTIVITY.

Maureen says YOU HAVE TO LOOK
ON THE LABEL.
THAT'S THE WONL WAY YOU'LL
KNOW IF --

Liz says COCOA PRO.

Maureen says COCOA PRO.

Liz says COCOA PRO LABEL.
AND THEY ALSO HAVE A WEBSITE
IF PEOPLE GO INTO COCOA PRO
AND IT'S QUITE FASCINATING
THE RESEARCH THEY'RE DOING.

Maureen says WITH HALLOWEEN
CANDY COMING OUT, THAT'S
SOMETHING ELSE TO THINK
ABOUT.
DEBBIE IS IN TORONTO.
HELLO, WELCOME.

The Caller says HELLO, THANK YOU
FOR SPEAKING WITH ME TODAY.
I WAS CALLING BECAUSE I HAVE
A DAUGHTER WHO'S FIVE AND A
HALF AND SHE'S DEFINITELY ON
THE CHUBBY SIDE, AND I FEEL
THAT WE DEFINITELY EAT
REALLY WELL HERE IN OUR
HOME, AND SHE'S GETTING ALL
THE RIGHT MESSAGES.
WHAT I FIND I HAVE
DIFFICULTY WITH IS WHEN WE
GO ELSEWHERE, ESPECIALLY IF
SHE GOES TO A PLAY DATE AT
SOMEONE ELSE'S HOUSE AND, OF
COURSE, I'M NOT THERE.
THEN SHE'S EXPOSED TO A LOT
OF FOODS THAT SHE REALLY
CAN'T AFFORD TO BE EATING.
AND ALSO, YOU KNOW, WE TRY
TO KEEP HER VERY ACTIVE AND
I'LL PURPOSELY TAKE HER TO
THE PARK AFTER SCHOOL, AND
I'LL FIND THAT OTHER MOMS
COME TO THE PARK AFTER
SCHOOL WITH THEIR KIDS AND
THEY'LL BRING WHAT I
CONSIDER TO BE INAPPROPRIATE
SNACK, WHICH ARE THEN
OFFERED TO MY DAUGHTER.
AND I GUESS MY QUESTION IS I
DON'T WANT TO SINGLE HER OUT
AND MAKE HER FEEL LIKE SHE'S
DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER
CHILDREN AND I JUST DON'T
KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH THIS.

Liz says YEAH, THAT'S A GREAT
QUESTION AND IT'S VERY
DIFFICULT.
BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO
SINGLE THEM OUT.
AND IF YOU TELL YOUR CHILD
NO, YOU CANNOT HAVE THAT, IT
REALLY DOES SET UP A BATTLE,
AND UH-UH FORTUNATELY THE
ONLY THING THAT YOU CAN DO
OR HAVE IN YOUR POWER IS TO
BRING A SNACK THAT YOU KNOW
SHE LIKES THAT SOMEHOW CAN
BE A BIT MORE FUN.
LET ME GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE
OF LUCKY CHARMS.
LUCKY CHARMS IS STILL A
WHOLE GRAIN CEREAL, AND YES
IT DOES HAVE THOSE LITTLE
MARSHMALLOWS THAT ARE IN
THERE, BUT FOR INSTANCE IF
YOU WENT TO THE PARK AND YOU
BROUGHT A LITTLE CONTAINER
OF LUCKY CHARMS, THAT REALLY
WOULDN'T BE SUCH A BAD
THING.
NOW THE ONLY THING IS MY
DAUGHTER JUST WANTS THE
MARSHMALLOWS AND THEN SHE
WANTS TO LEAVE ALL THE OTHER
PART.
BUT THERE ARE THINGS LIKE
THAT WHERE YOU DETERMINE
WHAT SHE LIKES OR ONE OF HER
FAVOURITE SNACKS OR AT LEAST
THAT CHOICE IS THERE.
I KNOW ONE LITTLE FAMILY,
THE KIDS, THE MOTHER ALWAYS
BROUGHT THEIR OWN FOOD FOR
BIRTHDAY PARTIES.
THEY WERE NEVER ALLOWED TO
HAVE CHOCOLATE CAKE AT KIDS'
BIRTHDAY PARTIES THAT JUST
DOESN'T WORK FOR KIDS.
THAT SINGLES THEM OUT AND
LIFE IS NO FUN.
SO YOU ONLY CAN CONTROL WHEN
YOU'RE THERE, WHEN THEY GO
TO OTHER PEEP ALES PLACES,
YOU JUST HAVE TO SAY “YOU
KNOW WHAT?
HOPEFULLY THE MAJORITY OF
THE TIME WHEN SHE'S AT MY
HOME SHE'LL EAT HEALTHY.

Maureen says IF YOU'RE
SETTING UP THE HOME
ENVIRONMENT, THAT'S WHERE
THEY LIVE SO, OBVIOUSLY YOU
CAN'T, YOU CAN'T CONTROL
EVERYTHING AROUND THEIR
LIVES AND WHERE THEY'RE
GOING TO GO.

Liz says NO.

Maureen says OKAY, GOOD LUCK.
THANKS VERY MUCH, DEBBIE.
SHOULD TALK A LITTLE BIT
ABOUT MODELLING.
PARENTS MODELLING.
WE HEARD EARLIER FROM
JENNIFER, WHOSE FAMILY IS
STILL EATING ONE WAY AND
TELLING HER SHE HAS TO EAT
ANOTHER.
WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT US,
THOUGH, IF WE WANT TO MODEL
GOOD EATING HABITS FOR OUR
KIDS?

Liz says I THINK IT'S SO IMPORTANT,
AND I THINK PARENTS UNDER
ESTIMATE HOW MUCH INFLUENCE
THEY HAVE ON THEIR OWN KIDS.
AND FOR EXAMPLE, I DON'T
EVEN USE THE WORD DIET IN MY
HOME.
I DON'T EVER TALK ABOUT --
EVEN IF I WERE TO PUT ON A
PAIR OF PANTS AND THOUGHT
THEY FELT TIGHT, I WOULD
NEVER, EVER EXPRESS THAT TO
MY DAUGHTER.
I JUST DON'T WANT TO EVEN
TALK ABOUT WEIGHT IN ANY
KIND OF WAY THAT SETS UP A
MESSAGE THAT, YOU KNOW, THIS
IS GOOD OR THAT IS BAD.
AND YET YOU HAVE SOME
MOTHERS THAT CONSTANTLY TALK
ABOUT DIETING AND HOW MUCH
THEY BATTLE WITH THEIR
WEIGHT, AND THE RESEARCH HAS
SHOWN THAT THEIR DAUGHTERS
ARE MUCH MORE LIKELY TO HAVE
AN UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP
WITH FOOD.
THE OTHER THING THAT IS SO
IMPORTANT IS TO EAT MEALS AS
A FAMILY, SITTING DOWN, WITH
THE TELEVISION OFF.
A RECENT STUDY FOUND THAT
OVERWEIGHT CHILDREN ARE 50 percent
MORE LIKELY TO BE EATING
MEALS IN FRONT OF A
TELEVISION SET AT DINNER
TIME.
AND NOT ONLY DID THEY NOT
NOTICE WHAT THEY'RE
EATING -- I MEAN, IT'S JUST
NOT A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT.
SO WE REALLY NEED TO SIT
WILL AND BE THERE.

Maureen says I HAVE AN E-MAIL
HERE ASKING ABOUT VITAMIN
PILL, MEANING VITAMIN
SUPPLEMENTS.
DO YOU WANT IT TALK A BIT
ABOUT THAT?

Liz says SURE, I ACTUALLY DON'T
THINK A MULTI VITAMIN IS A
BAD IDEA FOR KIDS.
EVEN WHEN WE TRY TO DO OUR
BEST TO GET THE KIDS TO MEET
THEIR NUTRITIONAL NEEDS
THERE ARE CERTAIN ONES THAT
OF THELY COME OUT LOW.
IRON, ZINC AND CALCIUM ARE
THREE OF THEM.
AND FOR THAT REASON I THINK
JUST A REGULAR MULTI VITAMIN
CERTAINLY WON'T HURT AND IT
WILL HELP MAKE UP THE SHORT
FALL.
THE OTHER THING IS YOU CAN
EVEN US A A MULTI ON THOSE
DAYS THAT YOUR KID JUST
ISN'T EATING WELL.
SO YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO DO
IT EVERYDAY.
BUT WHAT I DON'T LIKE IS
WHAT I CALL THE SHOTGUN
APPROACH TO VITAMIN
SUPPLEMENTS WHERE PEOPLE ARE
BUYING VITAMIN C, THIS
VITAMIN, THAT VITAMIN.
WE KNOW THERE'S ALL SORTS OF
INTERACTIONS AND IF YOU TAKE
TOO MUCH OF ONE YOU'LL
DECREASE ABSORPTION OF
ANOTHER.
I REALLY DO FEEL THE MULTI
VIT MONEY'S THE SAFEST WAY
TO GO.

Maureen says WHAT ABOUT
ADULTS?
SHOULD WE BE RELYING ON
VITAMINS?

Liz says WOMEN SHOULD.
MEN DO A BERT JOB BECAUSE
THEY EAT MORE FOOD THAN
WOMEN, BUT WOMEN ARE
CONSISTENTLY LOW IN FOLIC
ACID, IRON AND CALCIUM.
SO I THINK THAT AGAIN WE
WANT TO PUSH FOOD AND EAT
HEALTHY, BUT I DO THINK THAT
A MULTI VITAMIN DOESN'T
HURT.

Maureen says OKAY.
LISA IS IN TORONTO.
HI LISA.

The Caller says HI.

Maureen says HI.

The Caller says MY QUESTION IS
I'M A SECOND MOM AGAIN, I
HAVE A FOUR AND A HALF MONTH
OLD BABY, AND I'M BREAST
FEEDING, AND I'M REALLY
TRYING TO LOSE THE WEIGHT,
AND I'M ACTIVE, I'M AT A GYM
FIVE DAYS A WEEK FOR AN HOUR
OF CARDIO AND I'M ALSO BUSY
WITH MY SIX-YEAR-OLD, WE
WALK TO SCHOOL, THAT SORT OF
THING.
BUT WHEN I STARTED AT THE
GYM, THEY REALLY PUSHED THAT
I NEED TO LIMIT MY CALORIES
IN ORDER TO LOSE THE WEIGHT
FAST, AND I'M REALLY
CONCERNED THAT I'M GOING TO
COMPROMISE MY MILK SUPPLY.
I'M JUST WONDERING WHAT I
SHOULD DO WITH THAT.

Liz says WELL I THINK IT'S
IMPORTANT THAT YOU JUST HAVE
A HEALTHY DIET.
YOU SHOULDN'T BE RESTRICTING
YOURSELF TOO MUCH.
I MEAN IF YOU'RE FEELING
REALLY HUNGRY, THEN YES, YOU
CAN COMPROMISE YOUR MILK
SUPPLY.
YOU THINK IT'S MORE NOT THAT
YOU'RE RESTRICTING FOOD BUT
THE FOOD CHOICES THAT YOU'RE
MAKING AND THAT THEY ARE
HEALTHY CHOICES.
SO AS LONG AS THAT'S
HAPPENING, THERE'S NO NEED
TO CUT BACK A GREAT DEAL.
BUT THE ONE THING ABOUT
EXERCISE, THE BEST WAY TO
LOSE WEIGHT IS A COMBINATION
OF DIET AND EXERCISE, NOT
JUST ONE OR THE OTHER.

Maureen says LISA, YOU'RE
ABLE WITH A FOUR AND A HALF
MONTH OLD TO GET AWAY TO A
JICHL FOR AN HOUR EVERYDAY,
FIVE DAYS A WEEK?

The Caller says YEAH, I'M REALLY LUCKY.
I HAVE GREAT BABY, AND I
TIME IT SO THAT SHE'S UP ALL
MORNING AND I GO FOR THE
HOUR THAT SHE WOULD BE
SLEEPING.

Liz says YOU'RE DOING AMAZING.

Maureen says YEAH, THAT'S
GREAT.
DID YOU GAIN A LOT MORE THAN
YOU EXPECTED TO IN THE
PREGNANCY?

The Caller says YEAH, I DID WITH MY FIRST
DAUGHTER, TOO.
I GAINED ABOUT 55 POUNDS
THIS TIME, AND I'VE LOST 35
OF IT SO FAR.

Maureen says YEAH.

Liz says IT'S THE OTHER TWENTY.

Maureen says BUT IT TAKES A
LITTLE TIME.
I MEAN FOUR AND A HALF
MONTHS!
THIS IS -- IT'S GOING TO
COME OFF, JUST DOING THAT
HOUR OF EXERCISE A DAY.

Liz says YEAH, DEFINITELY.
AND IT'S A GOOD POINT
BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE
UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS OF
HOW QUICKLY THEY CAN LOSE
WEIGHT, AND IN MOST CASE
HEALTHY WEIGHT LOSS IS ONLY
HALF A POUND TO ONE POUND
PER WEEK SO,, YOU KNOW, IF
YOU JUST SEE IT SLOWLY BUT
SURELY COMING OFF, JUST KEEP
UP WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

Maureen says TELL THE PEOPLE
AT THE GYM TO BACK OFF A
LITTLE.
SOUNDS LIKE YOU'RE DOING
GREAT.
EXERCISE IS SOMETHING THAT
PEOPLE -- TO BE ABLE TO DO
TO A GYM, THAT'S A DREAM FOR
ME BUT I CAN'T FIT THAT INTO
MY LIFE.
HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE
EXERCISE INTO A BUSY
LIFESTYLE FOR THE WHOLE
FAMILY EVEN?

Liz says ONE OF THE NEAT STUDIES
COMING OUT WAS FROM COOPER
INSTITUTE IN THE STATES, AND
THEY'VE DONE TESTS WITH
PEOPLE WHO GET PEDOMETERS.
SO IT JUST CLIPS ON YOUR
BELT AND MEASURES HOW MANY
STEPS YOU TAKE A DAY.
IDEALLY WE WANT TO TAKE
10,000 STEAPS DAY.
MOST PEOPLE AVERAGE ABOUT
2,000 TO 3,000 STEPS.
WHEN THEY PUT THESE
PEDOMETERS ON, THEY COST 30 dollars,
IT'S REALLY WONDERFUL,
PEOPLE STARTED NOTICING,
WHEN I TAKE THE STAIRS, IT
MAKES A DIFFERENCE.
WHEN I PARK OVER HERE IN THE
PARKING LOT, IT MAKES A
DIFFERENCE.
IF I GO FOR A 15 MINUTE WALK
AFTER DINNER, I JUST GOT
THIS MANY MORE STEPS.
AND THEY START GOING FOR
THAT GOAL OF 10,000 STEPS,
AND IT'S SUCH AN EASY,
MEASURABLE WAY TO DO IT.
AND I ACTUALLY ENCOURAGE
PEOPLE TO GET A PEDOMETER
AND SEE HOW WELL THEY'RE
DOING.

Maureen says AND JUST WALKING
LIKE THAT IT WON'T MATTER
THAT WE'RE NOT GETTING OUR
HEARTRATE UP, BECAUSE
WALKING AROUND DOESN'T --

Liz says YES, WELL CERTAINLY THE
BRISKER THE PACE, THE BETTER,
AND I MEAN STROLLING VERSUS,
YOU KNOW, GETTING THERE UP
IS GOOD, BUT EVEN ANY STEPS
WE CAN DO ARE MUCH BETTER
THAN SITTING IN A CHAIR.

Maureen says THAT'S GREAT.
OKAY.
LET'S GO TO -- I'VE GOT A
QUESTION HERE.
ABOUT PUBERTY VERSUS
WEIGHT.
“MY DAD HAS A HEART
CONDITION AND THE DOCTOR --.”
NO, IT'S NOT ABOUT PUBERTY.
A DOCTOR RECOMMENDED A SALT
RESTRICTED DIET.
IN GENERAL I'VE HEARD
REDUCING SALT IN OUR DIETS
IS IMPORTANT.
WHAT IS THAT?
SHOULD YOU REDUCE THE SALT
IN THE DIET?

Liz says IT'S INTERESTING.
SALT'S BEEN CONTROVERSIAL,
BECAUSE IN A NORMAL, HEALTHY
POPULATION WITHOUT HIGH
BLOOD PRESSURE, IF YOU
REDUCE SODIUM IT DOESN'T
MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE ON
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, BUT IF
YOU'RE SOMEBODY WHO HAS HIGH
BLOOD PRESSURE, REDUCING
SODIUM MAKES MORE OF A
DIFFERENCE.
THEY'VE ALSO DONE STUDIES
WITH SOMETHING CALLED THE
DASH DIET, ACCOUNT DIETARY
APPROACH TO STOP HIGH BLOOD
PRESSURE, AND WHAT THEY'VE
FOUND IS THAT PEOPLE WHO GET
ABOUT STONE OF EIGHT
SERVINGS OF FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES EVERYDAY AND
THREE SERVINGS OF LOW FAT
MILK PRODUCTS GET AS MUCH A
BLOOD PRESSURE LOWERING
AFFECT AS PEOPLE WHO GO ON A
VERY STRONG MEDICATION.
THE THING IS WHETHER WE CAN
GET PEOPLE TO EAT THOSE
SEVEN TO EIGHT FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES A DAY AS WELL AS
THE LOW FAT DAIRY PRODUCTS.
SO OVER ALL I THINK A
MODERATE SALT INTAKE IS
IMPORTANT, BUT I DON'T THINK
IF YOU HAVE A HEALTHY BLOOD
PRESSURE YOU CAN'T EVER USE
SALT.

Maureen says OKAY.
THAT MAKES SENSE.
ANGELA, IN ORLEANS.
HELLO, ANGELA.

The Caller says HELLO, LADY, HOW
ARE YOU?

Maureen says GOOD, THANKS.

The Caller says I HAVE TWO AND A
HALF-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER WHO
SUN DER WEIGHT AND UNDER
HEIGHT FOR HER AGE.
I WAS JUST WONDERING, HOW
MUCH IS NUTRITION AND HOW
MUCH WOULD BE GENETICS?

Liz says ARE PEOPLE IN YOUR FAMILY
GENERALLY UNDER WEIGHT?

The Caller says NO.

Liz says NO.
OKAY, CERTAINLY THAT WILL
GIVE YOU AN INDICATION.
IT'S NOT OFTEN I GET PEOPLE
COMING TO ME AND SAY I NEED
TO GAIN WEIGHT, BUT IT DOES
HAPPEN AND I ALWAYS THINK
THOSE ARE THE LUCKY PEOPLE.
THE BEST THING IN TERMS OF
GETTING PEOPLE TO GAIN
WEIGHT IS MAKING SURE THAT
THEY HAVE FOODS THAT ARE
STILL HEART-HEALTHY.
SO NUTS ARE REALLY AN
EXCELLENT EXAMPLE.
IF THERE'S NO KIND OF NUT ALLERGY
NUTS ARE NUTRIENT
AND CALORIE DENSE AND YET
STILL PACKED WITH NUTRITION
SO FOR A CHILD WHO MAY BE A
LITTLE UNDERWEIGHT, HAVING A
SNACK WITH A TRAIL MIX OR
NUTS THROUGHOUT THE DAY CAN
BE A GREAT ADDITION TO THE
DIET.
BUT ADDING OTHER HIGHER FAT
FOODS, LIKE USING A WHOLE
MILK OR OTHER THINGS I
WOULDN'T RECOMMEND AS MUCH
AS THE HEART-HEALTH YER
FATS.

Maureen says AT WHAT POINT DO
YOU START TO WORRY AND TAKE
THEM TO A PEDIATRICIAN
BECAUSE THEIR Height AND
WEIGHT -- RETURN.

Liz says IDEALLY SOMEBODY'S GOING
A PEDIATRICIAN ON A REGULAR
BASIS AND THAT IS BEING
CHARTED.
AND USUALLY WHAT'S MUCH MORE
OF A CONCERN IS WHEN IT'S
NOT A STEADY LINE.
SO SOMEBODY MAY ALWAYS BE
BELOW THE CURVE, BUT IT'S A
REALLY STEADY LINE.
IF SOMEBODY ALL OF A SUDDEN
THEY NOTICE THERE'S A DROP
IN THEIR WEIGHT OR A
SIGNIFICANT INCREASE, THAT'S
WHERE YOU REALLY HAVE TO
START PAGE ATTENTION.

Maureen says OKAY.
LET'S AUCH ABOUT WATER
INTAKE IN A DAY DO WE REALLY
HAVE TO DRINK EIGHT FULL
GLASSES OF WATER A DAY?

Liz says WELL YOU KNOW, THE WHOLE
WATER THING, IT'S A
REPLACEMENT, IS THE NAME OF
THE GAME.
EVERY TIME THAT WE GO TO THE
BATHROOM OR EVEN WHEN WE'RE
BREATHING, WE'RE LOSING
WATER.
SO IDEALLY, WATER, BECAUSE
IT'S USED IN EVERY CELL OF
OUR BODY, WE DO TO WANT
REPLACE IT.
BUT EVERY TIME YOU HAVE
FRUITS OR VEGETABLES OR EVEN
WHEN YOU HAVE COFFEE OR TEA,
YOU LOSE A BIT OF WATER, BUT
NOT MUCH, YOU STILL GET A
SUR PLUS.
YOU'RE GETTING WATER
THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
BUT YES, TRYING TO MAKE SURE
YOU'RE GETTING FLUIDIS IS
IMPORTANT.

Maureen says OKAY.
FLUIDS IS IMPORTANT.
LINA IS IN TORONTO.
HI LINA.

The Caller says THANKS FOR TAKING
MY PHONE CALL.

Maureen says YOU'RE WELCOME.

The Caller says I'M CALLING ABOUT
MY SON.
HE'S 14 YEARS OLD AND HE'S
VERY ATHLETIC.
HE PLAYS BOTH HOCKEY AND
SOCCER, AND FOR INSTANCE
THIS WEEKEND HE'S PLAYED
THREE SOCCER GAMES ON
SATURDAY AND THREE HOCKEY
GAMES ON SUNDAY.
NOW WHEN I WAS DOING HIS
LAUNDRY I NOTICED THAT HE
HAD -- HIS UNDERWEAR WERE
JUST SOAKED, AND I'M REALLY
WORRIED THAT MAYBE HE'S
LOSING A LOT THROUGH HIS
PERSPIRATION, LIKE THE
SODIUM AND I WAS JUST
WONDERING, SHOULD I PUT HIM
ON A SPECIAL DIET OR SHOULD
I WONDER, LIKE SORT OF,
SHOULD HE BE ON HIGH CARB OR
SHOULD HE BE ON PROTEIN?
I'M KIND OF CONFUSED.
I'M WORRIED ABOUT HIM.

Liz says YEAH.
YOU KNOW, UNLESS SOMEBODY'S
REALLY INTO RUNNING LONG
DISTANCE MARATHONS AND STUFF,
IT'S REALLY QUITE EASY TO
REPLACE ANY KIND OF SODIUM
LOSSES THAT TAKE PLACE.
AND YOU CAN EASILY DO THAT
IN A HEALTHY DIET.
THERE'S NO NEED TO GO FOR
SPECIAL DRINKS AND
BEVERAGES.
AGAIN IT'S REALLY MORE A
COMPETITION WHERE YOU SEE
THAT KIND OF DIFFERENCE.
I THINK THE MOST IMPORTANT
THING IS OVERALL HEALTHY
DIET, AND THAT INCLUDES AUTO
REAL FOCUS ON CARBOHYDRATES,
COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES SO,
AGAIN THE WHOLE GAIN CEREALS
OR THE WHOLE GRAIN BREADS
WILL BE IMPORTANT WHEN
PEOPLE ARE PHYSICALLY VERY
ACTIVE.
BUT I DON'T THINK IT MEANS
YOU NEED TO BUY SPECIAL
DRINKS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

Maureen says I'VE OFTEN
LOOKED AT NHL GAMES AND THE
WAY THE HOCKEY PLAYERS ARE
JUST THROWING BACK THE WATER
AND THE GATORADE OR WHATEVER,
AND I'D THINK “I'D HAVE TO
GO TO THE BATHROOM” BUT MY
HUSBAND SAID NO, THEY SWEAT
IT OUT SO MUCH THAT THEY'RE
JUST REPLACING THAT.

Liz says AND YOU KNOW, MAKING SURE
THAT HE HAS A WATER BOTTLE
WITH HIM DURING ALL THE TIME
WHEN HE'S DOING SPORTS IS
GREAT IDEA.
BUT, YOU KNOW --

Maureen says YOU KNOW, HER
SON, IF HE'S ATHLETIC, MAY
START THINKING ABOUT -- WHAT
DO THEY -- THE SUPPLEMENTS
LIKE CREATININE.

Liz says YEAH.

Maureen says YEAH.
WHAT IS YOUR THOUGHT ABOUT THAT.

Liz says FIRST OF ALL IF YOU
PICKED UP ONE OF THESE
BODYBUILDING MAGAZINES YOU
WOULD THINK YOU'RE TOTALLY
DEEP EFFICIENT IN PROTEIN
AND HOW WOULD YOU EVER HAVE
ANY KIND OF MUSCLE MASS IF
YOU DIDN'T BUY THESE
SUPPLEMENTS.
THE REALITY IS IT IS SO EASY
TO MEET PROTEIN
REQUIREMENTS.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO
QUESTION THAT PEOPLE DO NOT
NEED TO TAKE ANY KIND OF
EXTRA SUPPLEMENT.
I MEAN, EVEN WHEN THEY'RE
COMPETING IT IS SO EASY TO
MEET PROTEIN REQUIREMENTS.
IN TERMS OF SOMETHING LIKE
CREATININE THEY'VE SHOWN
AGAIN AT THE OLYMPIC LEVEL
IT MIGHT MAKE THE SLIGHTEST
BIT OF DIFFERENCE,
PARTICULARLY IN A VERY
INTENSE KIND OF ACTIVITY BUT
FOR THE EVERYDAY PERSON NO,
AND WHAT WE DON'T KNOW IS
WHAT THE LONG-TERM EFFECTS
OR THE SIDE EFFECTS OF THESE
THINGS ARE AND I WOULD JUST
NEVER RECOMMEND THEM REALLY
FOR ANYONE.

Maureen says LEANNA, I WANT
TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR CALL.
TERESA IN ALTON WOULD LIKE
TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF FOOD
SHE COULD EAT TO KEEP HER
AWAKE DURING THE DAY.
“I FIND ABOUT NOON I HAVE A
TENDENCY TO CRASH AND I NEED
TO LIE DOWN FOR A WHILE.”
I GET SO TIRED I CAN'T EVEN
THINK SOMETIMES.

Liz says INTERESTING.
WELL THERE'S TWO THING THERE IS.
FIRST OF ALL I WOULD MAKE
SURE I'M EATING ON A REGULAR
BASIS.
NEVER GOING MORE THAN TWO TO
THREE HOURS WITHOUT HAVING
SOMETHING.
A LOT OF MINI MEALS
THROUGHOUT DAY.
THE OTHER THING IS THEY'VE
SHOWN BY HAVING A LITTLE BIT
OF PROTEIN IN THE MEAL IT
TENDS TO KEEP PEOPLE MORE
ALERT.
SO AGAIN, NUTS, AGAIN IN THE
A LOT OF THEM BECAUSE
THEY'RE CONCENTRATED WITH
CALRY, OR A LITTLE BIT OF
CHEESE.
OR EVEN A GLASS OF MILK.
SO ANYTHING WHERE THERE'S A
BIT OF PROTEIN WILL HELP
WITH ALERTNESS.

Maureen says MILK'S GOT THAT
THING IN IT THOUGH THAT
HELPS PUT YOU TO SLEEP,
DOESN'T IT?
WOULD THEY COUNTERACT ONE
ANOTHER IN.

Liz says WELL ACTUALLY, YOU KNOW,
MILK STILL, BECAUSE OF THE
PROTEIN, IT WOULD HELP KEEP
YOU --

Maureen says KEEP YOU AWAKE.

Liz says YEAH.

Maureen says THANKS, TERESA.
LET'S GO TO NARINE IN
PETERBOROUGH.
WELCOME.

The Caller says THANK YOU.
I WOULD JUST LIKE TO KNOW
HOW DO YOU FEEL SOYA MILK
COMPARES TO COW'S MILK,
ESPECIALLY IN A VITAMINS AND
NUTRITIONAL CONTENT.

Liz says THE GREAT THING ABOUT VIA
MILK IS JUST WITHIN THE LAST
YEAR IT'S NOW FORTIFIED WITH
CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D AND
RIBOFLAVIN.
IF THAT WEREN'T THE CASE IT
WOULD NOT BE A GOOD
COMPROMISE.
YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO MAKE
THAT SWITCH.
BUT BECAUSE OF THE FOR THE
FICTION, SO I MILK IS REALLY
AN TALENT ALTERNATIVE TO
COW'S MILK.
THE AND THE RESEARCH COMES
OUT BY SO I REDUCING HEART
DISEASE AND CANCER RISK IS
SO STRONG, WHETHER YOU DRINK
DAIRY MILK OR NOT PEOPLE
SHOULD TRY TO GET ONE
SERVING OF SO I PRODUCT A
DAY.
SO I NUTS VUCHLT EVER HAD
THEM?

Maureen says ARE THEY
TOLERABLE?

Liz says THEY'RE GREAT.
AND THEY'RE AVAILABLE
EVERYWHERE.
THEY'RE ROASTED -- THEY'RE
NOT LIKE PEANUTS BUT THEY'RE
GREAT AND JUST A REALLY
SMALL SERVE, A HANDFUL CAN
BE ALL THAT IT TAKES.
THE OTHER THING IS THAT I
BUY CHOCOLATE SO I MILK AND
I WILL WARM IT UP IN THE
MICROWAVE JUST BEFORE I'M
GOING BET BED AND HAVE LIKE
LITTLE GLASS OF WARMED UP SO
I MILK THAT'S CHOCOLATE AND
I FIND THAT'S A GREAT WAY.
BUT I FIND THE SO I NUTS ARE
SO EASY AND PORTABLE AND A
LOT OF PEOPLE LIKE THEM.

Maureen says THE OTHER THING
YOU'VE TALKED ABOUT THE IN
PAST THAT'S GOOD FOR US,
FLAXSEED.
PREFERABLY GROUND UP.
I'M STILL HAVING A HARD TIME
FINDING IT.
OF COURSE I'M LACKING IN THE
GROCERY STORES ONLY, ALREADY
GROUND UP SO I CAN SPRINKLE
IT ON CAREER CRL.

Liz says IT'S REALLY UNFORTUNATE.
I GUARANTEE YOU WITHIN THE
NEXT FEW YEARS WE'RE GOING
TO SEE FLAX WIDELY AVAILABLE
AT THE SUPERMARKET.
THE RESERVE IS SO STRONG
SUPPORTING IT.
UNFORTUNATELY WE'RE NOT YET.
THE BEST PLACE TO BUY
GROIN-UP FLAXSEED IS AT A
HEALTH FOOD STORE.
THEY ALL CARRY IT, IT'S
WIDELY AVAILABLE THERE.
THE OTHER THING YOU CAN TO
IS AND YOUR SUPERMARKET
WHETHER THEY WILL BRING IT
IN IT IS AMAZING HOW MANY
PRODUCTS, WHEN I'VE JUST
GONE TO THE PERSON WHO DOES
THE PURCHASING SAID IS THERE
ANY CHANCE YOU COULD BRING
THIS IN?
THEY BRING IT IN.
IF IT PROVES THEY KEEP IT ON
THE SHELF.

Maureen says HOW WOULD YOU
LIKE TO SEE IT COME TO US?
IN A BOX YOU POUR --

Liz says A LOT OF CASES THE BEST
WAY -- IT'S LIKE A VACUUM
PACKED CON TERN, A ZIP-LOCK
OPENING AND YOU KEEP IT IN
YOUR FRIDGE AND YOU CAN
SPRINKLE IT ON YOUR CEREAL,
MIX IT IN A DRINK, OR, YOU
KNOW, WHEN YOU'RE EVEN
MAKING ANY KIND OF BAKING
IT'S EASY TO ADD IT IN THERE
AS WELL.

Maureen says ALL RIGHT.
KIM IS IN KERWOOD.
HELLO, KIM.

The Caller says HI.

Maureen says HI.

The Caller says I HAD A QUESTION
ABOUT DOCTORATE KINGS' DIET,
IT'S LOW CARB, HIGH FAT DIET.

Maureen says ARE YOU ON IT?

The Caller says NO.

Maureen says ARE YOU THINKING
ABOUT IT?

The Caller says YEAH.

Maureen says WELL HIS STONE
THIS.
GO AHEAD.

Liz says I AM NOT PRO THE
DOCTORATE KINGS DIET.
IT IS A DIET THAT IS
EXTREMELY HIGH IN SATURATED
FAT, WHICH IS VERY STRONGLY
LINKED WITH HIGHER RISK OF
HEART DISEASE BECAUSE IT
RAISES BLOOD CHOLESTEROL
LEVELS.
I HEARD A QUOTE ONCE,
SOMEBODY SAID “YOU COULD
LOSE WEIGHT GOING THROUGH
CHEMOTHERAPY TREATMENT, BUT
DOES THAT MEAN IT'S A GOOD
WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT?”
THAT'S WHAT I THINK OF WHEN
I LOOK AT DOCTORATE KINGS.
YEAH, YOU'LL PROBABLY LOSE
WEIGHT BECAUSE ULTIMATELY
YOU'RE TAKING IN LESS CALORIES,
BUT IS IT A HEALTHY WAY?
NO.
THE NUMBER ONE THING I LOOK
FOR WHEN EVALUATING A DIET
IS IT A GOOD DISEASE
PREVENTION DIET LONG DISPERM
IF IT'S NOT, IT DOESN'T MAKE
SENSE.
ANYBODY WHO TELLS YOU TO
LIMIT YOUR FRUITS AND
VEGETABLE, IT MAKES SO
LITTLE SENSE FROM A HEALTH
STANDPOINT.
I REALLY BELIEVE YOU CAN EAT
HEALTH WHERE AND HAVE FRUITS,
VEJ VEGETABLE, WHOLE GRAINS,
CARBOHYDRATES AND STILL LOSE
WAIT.

Maureen says SOME PEOPLE THEY
DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT
DISEASE PREVENTION BECAUSE
THEY'RE YOUNG AND HE JUST TO
WANT LOOK BUFF RIGHT NOW.
CAN YOU LOSE WEIGHT ON A
DISEASE PREVENTION DIET?

Liz says ABSOLUTELY YOU CAN.

Maureen says OKAY.

Liz says YES.

Maureen says THERE SHOULDN'T
BE A PROBLEM.
ATKINS IS JUST ONE -- THE
PRITKIN DIET, THERE WAS THE
SCARSDALE DIE YET.
HAS ANYBODY OUT THERE COME
UP WITH A FANCY FAD DIET
THAT YOU DO APPROVE OF?

Liz says WELL THE ZONE, IF YOU
LOOK AT IT ISN'T BAD IN
TERMS OF -- REASON IT WORKS
AGAIN IS BECAUSE IT'S LOWER
IN CALORIES.
IT'S STILL NOT MEETING ALL
RIRMTS, A LITTLE BIT LOW IN
CALCIUM AND SOME OTHER
THINGS.
MY MAIN THING IS GO FOR
WHOLE GRAIN, EAT YOUR FRUITS
AND VEJ TARBLGS WHEN IT
COMES TO MEAT HAVE VERY
SMALL SERVINGS, ONLY THE
SIZE OF A DECK OF CARDS,
ONLY THE SKIM MILK AND SKIM
DAIRY PRODUCTS AND BE
PHYSICALLY ACTIVE AND I
THINK YOU CAN HAVE THE BEST
OF ALL WORLDS THAT WAY.

Maureen says OKAY, ALL RIGHT
GOOD LUCK.
THANKS, KIM.
WE HAVE -- OH, I CAN'T READ
THAT E-MAIL.
CAN'T GET THAT ATTACHMENT
OPEN.
ALL RIGHT, GET ANOTHER --
SORRY, THE NAME WAS REN
SNAMD IS IN PICKERING.
HI RENA.

The Caller says HELLO.

Maureen says HI.
WHAT'S YOUR QUESTION?

The Caller says I ACTUALLY HAVE
TWO SMALL GIRLS THAT TRAIN
QUITE A NUMBER OF HOURS A
WEEK IN GYMNASTICS.
WE EAT FAIRLY HEALTHY AND I
WAS JUST WONDERING IF
THERE'S ANYTHING I SHOULD BE
ADDING TO THE DIET BECAUSE
THEY'RE GIVING OFF SO MUCH.

Liz says THE ONLY THING AGAIN IS
THE FOCUS ON CARBOHYDRATES,
IT IS IMPORTANT WHEN KIDS
ARE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE.
AGAIN THE GRAIN, CEREAL,
RICE, PASTA, MAKING SURE
THAT'S A PART OF THE DIET.
THE OTHER THING IS THAT WHEN
A CHILD HAS FINISHED
EXERCISING, LET'S SAY
THEY'VE JUST BEEN AT
GYMNASTICS FOR AN HOUR,
RIGHT WHEN THEY GET HOME
IT'S IMPORTANT FOR THEM TO
HAVE A HIGH CARBOHYDRATE
SNACK TO REPLETE WHAT THEY
CALL THEIR GLYCOGEN STORES
OR SOURCE OF ENERGY THAT
COMES FROM CARBOHYDRATE.
SO EVEN IF IT WOULD BE A
PIECE OF FRUIT OR A PIECE OF
BREAD OR A BIT OF CEREAL,
HAVING IT RIGHT AFTER THE
EXERCISE IS THE BEST WAY TO
REPEAT THE GLYCOGEN STORES
SO THE NEXT DAY THEY'RE
READY TO GO.

Maureen says OTHERWISE WHAT
MIGHT HAPPEN?

Liz says IT'S JUST HARDER TO
REPLETE AND YOU DON'T
MAXIMIZE THE AMOUNT OF
GLYCOGEN THAT YOUR BODY CAN
STORE.
BUT AGAIN IT'S NOT NEARLY AS
MUCH AS SHOE UNLESS YOU'RE
INTO REALLY LONG DISTINCTION
DISTANCE.
IT'S WHEN YOU GET INTO THE
MERIT THAN-LIKE TRAINING
THAT WHAT YOU EAT TRULY
BECOMES A SCIENCE.

Maureen says OKAY, I THINK WE
HAVE TIME FOR JENNIFER IN
CUMBERLAND.
HI JENNIFER.

The Caller says HELLO, LOUD
DECEMBER, AND GOOD
AFTERNOON.
I JUST WANTED TO MENTION
QUICKLY BEFORE YOUR SHOW
ENDS I DID ASK YOUR GUEST
THIS SAME QUESTION ABOUT THE
DOCTORATE KINS DIET A WHILE
AGO, AND OF COURSE SHE
ADVISED AGAINST IT BUT LIKE
ALL CONSUMERS WE DON'T
LISTEN.
MY HUSBAND AND I DID GO ON
THE DIET, WE DID LOSE SOME
WEIGHT.
MY HUSBAND, HE LOST THREE
INCHES OFF HIS WAIST, BUT
HIS CHOLESTEROL WENT THROUGH
THE ROOF.
SO HIS DOCTOR PRESCRIBED
LIPIDOR.
SO I'D LIKE TO APOLOGIZE TO
YOUR GUEST FOR NOT TAKING
HER ADVICE.
IT'S NOT WORTH IT.

Maureen says SO YOUR HUSBAND
ACTUALLY HAD TO GO ON PILLS
BECAUSE OF THE DIET HE'D
BEEN ON?

The Caller says HE WENT FOR HIS YEARLY
PHYSICAL AND HIS CHOLESTEROL,
HIS DOCTOR SAID WAS THROUGH
THE ROOF, AND THEY PUT HIM
ON A DRUG CALLED LIPIDOR.

Liz says THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR
YOUR CALL.
THAT'S WONDERFUL INFORMATION
TO PASS ONTO OTHER PEOPLE
BECAUSE FAD DIETS ARE SO
APPEALING, AND, YOU KNOW,
EVERYBODY WANTS THE MAGIC
BULLET.

Maureen says YOU SEE THE
CELEBRITIES WHO HAVE BEEN ON
THEM AND THEY LOOK GREAT.
DID YOU HAVE ANOTHER
QUESTION, JENNIFER.

The Caller says ACTUALLY I DID IF
YOU DON'T MIND.
MY HUSBAND IN THE MORNING
EATS TWO PACKAGES OF THE
PREPARED QUAKER OATS CEREAL?
I KNOW IT'S VERY HIGH IN
SUGAR, AND HE USUALLY WILL
HAVE A GLASS OF MILK WITH
THAT.
IS THAT OVEREATING IN THE
MORNING?

Liz says NO, I THINK THAT'S FINE.
THE QUAKER OAT, EVEN THOUGH
IT HAS THE ADDED SUGAR,
AGAIN THERE'S NO RELT RISK
RELATED TO SHUG GAMPLT
YOU'RE GETTING SO MUCH OTHER
GOOD STUFF WITH THE OATMEAL
BECAUSE THOSE PAQUETS ARE
REALLY QUITE SMALL, I THINK
HAVING TWO OF THEM IS FINE
AND JUST AGAIN HE'S GOING
WITH THE MILK THAT HE IS
GOING WITH THE SKIM OR 1 percent.

Maureen says SOUNDS GOOD.
YEAH, I'D HAVE TO HAVE TWO
AS WELL.
HARDLY FEEDS A BIRD.
WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH OAT
SNEEL IS IT CONSIDERED HIGH
FIBRE?

Liz says IT'S IN THE THAT IT'S SO
HIGH IN FIBRE COMPARED TO
SAY BRAN.
BRAN IS MUCH HIGHER
COMPARATIVELY, BUT FIBRE
THAT IS IN OAT BRAN, IT'S
CALLED A SOLUBLE FIBRE AND
IT HELPS BIND CHOLESTEROL IN
OUR G.I. TRACT OR
GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT --
HELPS LOWER BLOOD
CHOLESTEROL LEVELS.

Maureen says MOVES IT ON OUT OF THERE.

Liz says GETS IT ON OUT OF THERE.

Maureen says I KNOW WHAT YOU
MEAN.
WE'LL HAVE TO LEAVE IT
THERE.
I WANT TO THANK JENNIFER FOR
HER CALL AND ALL THE REST OF
THE VIEWERS THAT PHONED IN.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, LIZ, IT
WAS NICE TO SEE YOU.

Liz says THANK YOU.

Maureen says LIZ PEARSON IS

IT EAT broccoli, but save A
