(music plays)
The opening sequence shows a wooden table with a small lit candle as several words fly by: Nutrition, medicine, prevention, treatment, health.
Fast clips show different sets of hands performing activities on the table such as pulling petals from a daisy, drawing a big red heart, tuning a violin, flipping through the pages of a book, cooking, and pouring a glass of red wine.
In animation, the title appears inside the shape of a house: “More to life.”

Then, Maureen Taylor appears in a studio with yellow walls and a small TV set in the background, which reads “More to life.”

Maureen is in her late thirties, with wavy blond hair in a bob. She's wearing a bright red blazer.

Maureen says HI, I'M MAUREEN
TAYLOR, AND WELCOME TO “MORE
TO LIFE.”
IF YOU'VE MISSED THE CUT,
THAT'S THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF
STROKES ALLOWED FOR TWO
ROUNDS OF GOLF, FRANKLY, YOU
COULD PROBABLY DO WITH SOME
HELP.
MY GUEST TODAY IS GOLF
EXPERT KEVIN THISTLE.

Kevin is in his thirties, with short spiky brown hair and a trimmed goatee. He’s wearing a striped gray shirt.

Maureen continues HE'LL TELL YOU HOW YOU CAN
IMPROVE YOUR GAME FROM SWING
TECHNIQUES TO PRACTICE
EXERCISES.
HE'S THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF AT
THE ANGUS GLEN GOLF CLUB IN
MARKHAM.
SO GRAB YOUR NINE IRON AND
GIVE US A CALL.

A caption appears on screen. It reads "416-484-2727. 1-888-411-1234."
It changes to “moretolife@tvo.org”

Maureen says AND KEVIN,
THANKS FOR JOINING US.
HI.

Kevin says THANKS FOR
HAVING ME.

Maureen says JUST HEARD THE
CANADIAN OPEN WILL BE HELD
AT YOUR CLUB, THE ANGUS GLEN
IN 2002.

Kevin says YES.

Maureen says CONGRATULATIONS.

Kevin says THANK YOU.
EVERYONE AT THE COURSE IS
VERY EXCITED.

Maureen says HOW HARD IS IT
TO GET THE CANADIAN OPEN.

The caption changes to "Kevin Thistle. Golf Expert."

Kevin says AT THE
PAST 22 YEARS IT'S ONLY BEEN
AT THE ROYAL GLEN ABBEY AND
ONE OTHER GOLF COURSE.
SO WE'RE VERY EXCITED.

Maureen says WHAT DID YOU
HAVE TO DO TO QUALIFY?

Kevin says I THINK
THEY WERE LOOKING AT SEVEN
OR EIGHT SITES, AT ANGUS
GLEN, IT'S A NICE GOLF
COURSE, CAN MEANING IT HAS
INFRASTRUCTURE, HAS PARKING,
WE'RE BUILDING A NEW
CLUBHOUSE, THEY WERE HAPPY
WITH THE COURSE ITSELF BUT
ALSO THE AMENITIES FOR THE
SPECTATORS.

Maureen says WAS THERE BADING
PROCESSOR --

Kevin says GOOD
QUESTION.
THEY COME OUT, LOOK AT THE
COURSE, LOOK AT HOW THE
PLAYERS WOULD PLAY AND THE
SPECTATOR FLOW AND THEY FELT
ANGUS GLEN COULD HOLD THE
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Maureen says DO YOU KNOW YET
WHAT KIND OF BIG NAME
GOLFERS YOU'LL AVAKT?

Kevin says WHAT
HAPPENS IS THE YEAR THE
EVENT THE DIRECTOR FOR THE
TOURNAMENT, HE'LL GO OUT AND
TALK TO THE PLAYERS SO WE'RE
HOPING TO ATTRACT A TIGER
WOODS OR DAVIS LOVE, ET
CETERA.

Maureen says THAT'D BE NEAT.
AND THIS SUMMER IT'S IN
OAKVILLE?

Kevin says GLEN ABBEY
GOLF CLUB.

Maureen says DO WE KNOW WHO'S
PLAYING YET?

Kevin says NO, THE
CUT OFF DATE IS JULIE ABOUT
JULY.
THERE'S SPECULATION, BUT --
IS USUALLY ABOUT JULY.
THERE'S SPECULATION BUT NO
ONE KNOWS.

Maureen says WHAT WOULD THE
ODDS OF GETTING A TIGER
WOODS, DO YOU THINK?

Kevin says THERE'S
BEEN A LOT OF NEW GOLFERS
WITH THE TIGER WOODS SURGE,
SO WITH HIM COMING TO GLEN
ABBEY OR THE ROYAL IN
MONTREAL, THE SPECTATORS
THAT MAYBE DON'T RELATE TO
SOME OF THE GOLFERS WOULD
REALLY BE THERE.

Maureen says TIGER WOODS HAS
PROBABLY ATTRACTED A LOT OF
YOUNGER GOLFERS, RIGHT?
HAVE YOU NOTICED AN INCREASE
IN THE KIDS SIGNING UP FOR
LESSONS?

Kevin says DEFINITELY.
WE DO A LOT OF JUNIOR
CLINICS NOW.
THE NICE THING WITH TIGER
WOODS, KIDS BEING ABLE TO
RELATE TO HIM, HE'S HIP,
KIND OF FUNKY, THEY COME OUT,
THEY'RE DRESSED IN THEIR
NIKE AND CLUBS, EVERY JUNIOR
TOURNAMENT WE HAVE SELLS OUT
AS WELL.

Maureen says LET'S TALK TO
THE REST OF US WHO HAVE NO
HOPE OF EVER PLAYING LIKE A
TIGER WOODS, WHAT'S THE
NUMBER ONE MISTAKE MOST
GOLFERS MAKE.

Kevin says IF THEY
GET TO THE CLUB, THEY
HAVEN'T PRACTICED OR WARMED
UP, THAT'S ONE MISTAKE AND
THE MOST COMMON ERROR OF
GOLFERS IS THE BIG SLICE
BECAUSE WE DON'T PLAY A LOT
AND WE JUST GET OUT ON THE
FIRST TEE AND HIT THE BALL
HARD, THE BALL HAS A
TENDENCY TO SLICE ON YOU.
THAT'S THE ONE THING I SEE.

Maureen says SLICE MEANS IT
DOESN'T GO STRAIGHT, IT GOES
OFF IN ONE DIRECTION?

Kevin says RIGHT.
IF YOU'RE A RIGHT HANDED
GOLFER IT GOES DOWN THE
MIDDLE FAIRWAY AND STARTS TO
WARP INTO THE ROUGH.
A BIG LEFT OR RIGHT SLICE.

Maureen says WHAT ARE YOU
DOING WRONG IF THAT HAPPENS?

Kevin says A LOT OF
TIMES YOU'RE NOT FOLLOWING
THROUGH.
IT'S THE BASICS.
LET'S SAY IF YOU PLAYED AS A
KID, GO OUT AND HIT THE BALL,
AS WE GET OLDER MAYBE WE
SHOULD HAVE WHAT LITTLE
TUNE-UP LESSON OR SOMETHING,
BECAUSE IT'S JUST THE BASICS.
IT'S THE GRIP, IT'S THE
STANCE, JUST LITTLE THINGS
THAT'LL MAKE THE BALL TURN
TO THE RIGHT.

Maureen says YOU'RE A GOLF
PRO, THE PREMIERE WAS A GOLF PRO.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN, TO BE A
GOLF PRO?

Kevin says THERE'S
GOLF PRO AND PROFESSIONAL
GOLFER.
ANOTHER GOOD QUESTION.
A PROFESSIONAL GOLFER I FEEL
IS ONE THAT GOES OUT AND
EARNS HIS LIVING BY PLAYING.
TIGER WOODS, MIKE WIER,
EXACTLY.
THE OTHER BEING MYSELF, WHO
I MANAGE A GOLF COURSE SO,
THEREFORE I'M IN THE
BUSINESS OF GOLF, I'M A
GOLFER, BUT I'M IN THE
BUSINESS OF GOLF.
I RUN A GOLF FACILITY, I MAY
GIVE LESSONS, I CATER TO
MEMBERS, ET CETERA.
SO THERE'S TWO DIFFERENT
AVENUES OF GOLF PROS.

Maureen says WHAT'S YOUR GAME LIKE?

Kevin says IT'S OKAY.
IN THE LAST FIVE OR SIX
YEARS, FOLKS, YOU KNOW, ON
THE BUSINESS, IT'S COME DOWN
A COUPLE NOTCHES --

Maureen says SUFFERED A
LITTLE BIT BECAUSE YOU'RE
BUSY.
YOU'VE PROBABLY PLAYED THIS
YEAR SO FAR THOUGH.

Kevin says SURE DID.
YEAH.

Maureen says HOW DO THE
GREENS SFLOOK HAVE WE HAD
ENOUGH RAINFALL?
HOW'S IT LOOKING?

Kevin says THIS
WINTER WAS GREAT FOR ALL
OVER ONTARIO.
WE'VE HAD A COUPLE BAD
WINTERS, BUT THIS WAS A
WONDERFUL WINTER.
EVERY GOLF COURSE, MANY
FRIENDS WHO ARE GENERAL
MANAGERS OR GOLF PROS HAVE
SAID THE COURSES ARE IN
GREAT SHAPE SO IT'S GOOD FOR
THE GOLFERS.

Maureen says ALL RIGHT.
WELL IF YOU'RE A GOLFER,
WHETHER IT'S A NOVICE OR
SOMEBODY WHO TALKS ABOUT
HANDICAPS AND STUFF, GIVE US
A CALL WITH YOUR QUESTIONS
AND TALK TO KEVIN THISTLE, A
GOLF PRO IN MARKHAM AT ANGUS
GOLF CLUB, AND HE'S HERE TO
ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.

The phone numbers and email reappear briefly.

Maureen says AND HE'S GOT HIS
CLUBS HERE, TOO, SO HE CAN
SHOW US SOME GRIPS ON CHIBS
AND THINGS -- CLUBS AND
THINGS LIKE THAT GRANT IS IN
St. CATHARINES.
HOW ARE YOU?

The Caller says HELLO.
Kevin.

Kevin says GRANT, HOW
ARE YOU?

The Caller says GOOD.
I HAVE A QUESTIONS I GOLF
MAYBE ONCE A WEEK AND THE
CLUB I HATE USING IS MY
PITCHING WEDGE.
I GET ABOUT TO YARDS FROM
THE GREEN OR WHATEVER, 15
YARDS FROM THE GREEN, AND I
CAN NEVER -- I DON'T KNOW,
IT'S JUST A NIGHTMARE.
I'VE HEARD THAT YOU SHOULD
LOCK YOUR WRISTS AND OTHER
PEOPLE SAY NO, BEND YOUR
WRISTS AND THINGS LIKE THAT
WITH THE PITCHING WEDGE BUT
I ALWAYS SEEM TO TOP THE
BALL AND SCOOT IT ACROSS THE
OTHER SIDE OF THE GREEN AND
BACK OFF THE GREEN.
I'M JUST WONDERING IF YOU
HAVE ANY TIPS, HOW TO GET
THAT LITTLE LOFT AND --

Kevin says DEFINITELY.
WHAT HAPPENS IS WITH YOUR
PITCHING WEDGE THE LOFT IS
THERE.
YOU'VE BOUGHT THE CLUB, LET
IT WORK.
YOU'RE A LITTLE NERVOUS,
SAME AS MYSELF AROUND THE
GREEN.
YOU'RE A LITTLE NERVOUS SO
WHAT HAPPENS IS YOU'RE
MOVING YOUR HEAD.
WHAT YOU'VE GOT TO DO IS
YOU'VE GOT TO JUST KEEP YOUR
HEAD STILL.
I LIKE THE LOCKING THE
WRISTS, THAT'S FINE.
BUT WHAT HAPPENS IS IF YOU
KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL --
LET'S SAY YOU'RE 5 foot 10,
WHEN YOU TAKE THE CLUB BACK
YOU'RE 5 foot 10 SO WHEN YOU
HIT THE BALL, STATE YOUR
HEIGHT.
THAT'S WHY YOU'RE TOPPING IT.
INSTEAD OF HITTING THE BALL
DOWN, LIKE A DESCENDING BLOW
INTO THE GROUND WHAT YOU'RE
DOING IS LIFTING UP TO LOOK
AT IT AS YOU LIFT UP THE
PITCHING WEDGE COMES UP, YOU
HIT THE TOP OF THE BALL.
AND ANOTHER THING IF YOU'RE
DOING THAT, LET'S SAY YOU'RE
10 OR 15 YARDS FROM THE
GREEN AND THERE'S NO HAZARD
IN FRONT OF YOU, MEANING
WATER OR SAND, SAKE A SEVEN
IRON OUT AND PLAY IT LIKE A
PUTTER.
IT'S A BUMP AND RUN.
I DO IT ALL THE TIME,
AMATEUR GOLFERS DO IT ALL
THE TIME BUT REALLY PRACTICE
THAT PITCHING WEDGE WHERE
ALL YOU CARE ABOUT IS NOT
HITTING THE BALL, IS KEEPING
YOUR HEAD REALLY STILL.

Maureen says SO DO THE SEVEN
IRON AS A PUTTER INSTEAD OF
TRYING TO PITCH IT INTO THE GREEN.

Kevin says RIGHT.
THE COMMON ERROR FOR
AMATEURS IS THEY'RE AROUND
THE GREEN, IT'S BEAUTIFUL
GRASS BETWEEN THEM AND THE PIN.
IF THERE'S A TRAP THERE, NO.
WE USE A SAND WEDGE OR
PITCHING WEDGE BUT WHEN IT'S
A RUN-UP SHOT THEY USE IT IN
EUROPE ALL THE TIME.
IF YOU WATCH THE EUROPEAN
PROS, THEY USE IT ALL THE
TIME.
OVER HERE WE WANT TO HIT THE
BALL, GET IT IN THE AIR --
THERE'S NO NEED.
WHEN YOU'RE ON THE GREEN THE
EASIEST WAY TO GET IT IN THE
HOLE IS KEEP IT OFF THE
GROUND.
WHEN YOU'RE ON THE GREEN,
HIT THE BUMP and RUN BECAUSE
IT'S EASIER TO PUTT THE BALL
THAN A MANUFACTURED HIGH LOB
SHOT.

Maureen says IS THE PITCHING
WEDGE THE SAME AS A NINE IRON?

Kevin says THE LOT OF.
IT PRETTY WELL IS THE
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE NINE
IRON AND PITCHING WEDGE IS
THE LENGTH.
THE WEDGE IS SHORTER AND THE
LOFT WHICH MEANS WHEN YOU
HIT THE BALL WITH SAY A
PITCHING WEDGE IT WILL GO IN
THE AIR ABOUT 80 YARDS.
WHEN YOU HIT A SEVEN IRON IT
DOESN'T GONE IN THE AIR AS
MUCH, A ABOUT 140 YARDS FOR
THE AVERAGE GOLFER.

Maureen says ALL RIGHT,
THAT'LL HELP ME, TOO.
I THOUGHT I HAD TO PITCH IT
TO LOOK GOOD BUT I CAN JUST
PUT IT --

Kevin says DON'T
WORRY ABOUT LOOKING GOOD.
IT'S THE STROKES AROUND THE
GROWN.
REMEMBER A 250 YARD DRIVE IS
THE SAME AS A 20 FOOT CHIP.
COUNTS THE SAME IN THE GAME
OF GOLF.

Maureen says HOPE THAT HELPS.
THANKS, GRANT.
Kevin IS IN KITCHENER.
HI KEVIN.

The Caller says HI THERE.

Maureen says HI.

The Caller says I HAVE A PROBLEM,
AS YOU CALL IT, COMING OVER
THE TOP, WHICH RESULTS IN
BALL FLIGHT WHICH TRAILS OFF
TO THE LEFT.
AND I'M WONDERING, I'VE
TRIED MANY DIFFERENT THINGS
AND I'M LOOKING FOR
SOMETHING THAT WILL WORK FOR
ME TO TRY TO CORRECT THAT.

The caption changes to "Today’s topic, golf."

Kevin says SO YOU'RE
COMING OVER THE COP, WHICH
MEANS -- ALL A LOT OF PEOPLE
WORRY ABOUT COMING OVER THE
TOP IS THE DOWNSWING, WHICH
MEANS COMING OVER THE TOP...

He leans his right shoulder forward and says
YOU'RE COMING THIS WAY.
BUT WHAT HAPPENS IS YOU
PROBABLY HAVE A LITTLE BIT
OF A REVERSE PIVOT.
WHEN YOU FIRST START YOUR
FIRST MOVE IS TO KEEP A LOT
OF WEIGHT ON THE left SIDE
SO, HERE I AM MAYBE AT THE
TOP OF MY BACKSWING SO NOW
YOUR MOVE IS TO COME OVER
THE TOP.
AND PRACTICE THIS, BECAUSE A
LOT OF PEOPLE I'VE TAUGHT DO
THIS.
WHEN YOU GET OUT ON THE
DRIVING RANGE, TAKE A SEVEN
IRON, DON'T GO WITH THE
DRIVER YET, TAKE THE SEVEN
IRON AND JUST FEEL LIKE
THERE'S AN ARROW DOWN YOUR
HEAD SO, WHEN YOU TURN ALL
YOU CARE ABOUT IS -- SEE
YOUR LEFT SHOULDER?
THE BACK OF YOUR LEFT
SHOULDER, YOU WANT TO TURN
THAT TO THE PIN.
SEE, NOW I'M TURNING BACK
AND A LOT OF PEOPLE, BECAUSE
WE DON'T PLAY A LOT, WE
DON'T GO ALL THE WAY BACK,
SO SEE WHERE I AM HERE?
NOW TO HIT IT I'VE GOT TO
COME OVER THE TOP.
SO ALL I CARE ABOUT IS
STANDING STILL, YOU'VE GOT
AN ARROW DOWN THE SPINE OF
YOUR BODY, THIS LEFT
SHOULDER JUST HAS TO GO AND
FACE THE TARGET.
NOW FROM HERE I CAN'T GO
OVER THE TOP BECAUSE TO GET
TO THE BALL MY RIGHT
SHOULDER'S GOING TO COME
UNDER, OKAY?
IT'S NOT A LOT TO DO WITH
OVER THE TOP.
WE TALK ABOUT THE DOWNSWING.
IT STARTS ON THE BACK SWING.
WHATEVER THE BACKSWING DOES,
THE FORWARD SWING WILL
MIRROR.
SO PLEASE, TRY IT WHERE THE
BACK -- AND IT'S A BIG
MUSCLE -- JUST FACES THE
TARGET.

Maureen says THESE ARE
EXERCISES YOU SHOULD DO WHEN?
AT HOME?
NOT STANDING THERE WHILE
THERE'S THREE FOURSOMES
BEHIND YOU WANTING TO DRIVE
THROUGH.

Kevin says RIGHT.
THIS IS SOMETHING DO YOU IN
YOUR BACKYARD, YOU CAN TAKE
SOME PRACTICE SWINGS, BUT
THE GREATEST THING IS TO GO
TO A DRIVING RANGE, A BUCKET
OF BALLS.
ALWAYS START OFF WITH YOUR
PITCHING WEDGE, DON'T START
OFF WITH THE DRIVER, YOU
DON'T WANT TO STRAIN THE
MUSCLES, START OFF WITH THE
PITCHING WEDGE, WORK YOU
WANT TO SEVEN IRON, THE FIVE
IRON, THE THREE WOOD.
BUT THESE ARE THINGS YOU
SHOULD TAKE, YOU KNOW, FOR
LITTLE PROBLEMS LIKE KEVIN
HAD, GO TO THE DRIVING RANGE,
GET YOUR SEVEN YOU IRON AND
HIT THAT UNTIL YOU FEEL
REALLY COMFORTABLE WITH IT.

Maureen says AS A WOMAN I
DON'T HAVE A LOT OF
STRENGTH, AND NO DISTANCE
WHEN I DRIVE.
WHAT WOULD HELP ME, A SMALL
PERSON?

Kevin says WHAT I
LIKE IS I LIKE THE GRAPHITE
SHAFTS, AND LADY'S FLEX,
BECAUSE THEY'RE A LITTLE
WHIPPIER WHICH MEANS ALL
YOU'VE GOT TO DO IS FOLLOW
THROUGH A LITTLE MORE.
A LOT OF PEOPLE TAKE THEM
BACK, REALLY QUICK, THEY GET
BACK HERE ANDER HERE AND
THEN THEY JUST BOUNCE ON THE
BALL.
NO, THE SHAFT IS FLEXING SO,
ALL I WORRY ABOUT TAKING IT
BACK NICE AND EASY, YOU'RE
IN A COIL POSITION, NOW IF
YOU JUST WORRY ABOUT THE
FOLLOW-THROUGH, THAT'S WHERE
YOU GET THE POWER.

Maureen says SO DON'T TRY TO
KILL THE BALL --

Kevin says DON'T KILL
THE BALL.
LET THE CLUBS DO THE WORK.

Maureen says WHAT DO YOU CALL IT?
IT'S A FLUB, RIGHT, WHEN YOU
TAKE A MIGHTY SWING AND
THERE'S THE BALL, ROLL ROLLS
OFF THE TEE TEE.
OH, THERE'S MY BALL.
SHOULD HAVE BEEN DOWN THE
FAIRWAY.

Maureen says HOW EMBARRASSING
IS THAT.
Kevin THANK YOU FOR YOUR
CALL.
LYNN IS NEXT, SHE'S IN
TORONTO.
HI LYNN.

The Caller says HI.

Maureen says HI.

The Caller says I WAS JUST
WONDERING IF YOU COULD TELL
ME WHAT KIND OF BALLS YOU
WOULD RECOMMEND.

Kevin says THAT'S GREAT!
THAT'S A GREAT IDEA.
I'VE BROUGHT A COUPLE.
NOW FOR A LADY WHAT I WOULD
LIKE IS COMPRESSION, AN 80
COMPRESSION BECAUSE WHAT
HAPPENS SEE GOLF BALLS IN
DIFFERENT COMPRESSIONS, 80,
90, AND 100.
100 COMPRESSION MEANS IT'S A
HARDER GOLF BALL AND I'LL
TALK ABOUT THAT IN A SECOND
BUT TO COMPRESS THE BALL YOU
REALLY HAVE TO HITS IT HARD.
USUALLY FOR SENIORS OR
LADIES I'D LIKE TO SEE AN 80
COMPRESSION.
NOW THERE'S TWO DIFFERENT
TYPES OF BALLS, REALLY.
WE HAVE A BELOTTA BALL.
MOST OF PEOPLE ON TOUR USE
THAT.
IT'S A WOUND BALL THAT WHEN
IT HITS THE GREEN IT SPINS
BACK BUT IF THERE'S A MISCUE
WE CAN CUT THE BALL OPEN.
SO IT'S A SERLIN COVER THAT
I WOULD RECOMMEND TO 95 percent OF
GOLFERS WHICH MEANS IT'S A
HARD COVER.
I DON'T HIT IT EVERY SHOT
GREAT SO I DON'T WANT TO CUT
MY BALL.
THE SERLIN BALL IS HARD
AND DURABLE ENOUGH WHERE
IT'LL TAKE CARE OF OUR BAD
SHOTS, BUT THE COMPRESSION
IS VERY IMPORTANT AND LIKE I
SAID, FOR LADIES I'D LIKE TO
SEE AN 80 COMPRESSION BALL
USED.

Maureen says YOU'VE GOT A TOP
FLIGHT THERE AND WHEN I
LEARNED GOLF EVERYBODY
TALKED ABOUT TOP FLIGHT IS
IT THE ABSOLUTE BEST BALL OR
ARE THERE OTHER BRANDS?

Kevin says THERE'S SO
MANY BRANDS OUT THERE NOW.
CALLAWAY HAS THIS NEW GOLF
BALL, IT'S A CRAZE, TAYLOR
MADE, NIKE NOW HAS A GOLF
BALL.
TRADITIONAL GOLF BALL
MANUFACTURERS ARE TITULUS
AND DUNLOP, AND SPALDING
WHICH IS A GOOD COMPANY BUT
NOW WITH THED A VENTS OF THE
10 MILLION dollar CONTRACTS FOR
TIGER WOODS, LIKE I SAID
TAYLOR MADE, CALLAWAY AND
NIKE HAVE NEW ONES.
ALL THE TOP LINE BALLS I
FEEL ARE PRETTY SIMILAR.
YOU'LL FIND ONE YOU MAY HAVE
MADE A BIRDIE WITH SO THAT'S
YOUR FAVOURITE BALL BUT GO
AND GET A BRAND NAME BALL,
THEY'RE ALL PRETTY SIMILAR.
ALL GOOD BALLS.

Maureen says IF THERE'S WATER
OR A DITCH THERE'S A MAGNET
IN THAT AND MY BALL FINDS IT
SHOULD I SWITCH TO A LESS
EXPENSIVE BALL WHEN I'M
COMING UP NEAR THAT KIND OF THING?

Kevin says SURE.
THERE'S CERTAIN THINGS
CALLED JAR BALLS.
THE BALL I PULLED OUT?
TOP FLIGHT?
THAT'S OUR JAR BALL.
WE'LL HAVE PEOPLE COMING
INTO THE PRO SHOP AND JUST
BECAUSE IT'S A NICE COLOUR,
TITULUS PROFESSIONAL,
THEY'RE ABOUT 17 DOLLARS FOR
THREE BALLS, BUT THAT'S WHAT
THE PROFESSIONALS USE AND
SOMEONE WILL COME TO THE
COUNTER, GRAB A BALL AND
I'LL SAY “DO YOU PLAY GOLF
MUCH?”
AND THEY'LL SAY “NOT MUCH.”
AND I'LL SAY “LET'S GRAB THE
2 dollar BALL.”

Maureen says THANKS VERY MUCH,
LYNN.

She turns to a nearby computer screen and says
I HAVE AN E-MAIL HERE
FROM BARRIE.
I'M CURRENTLY TRYING TO
BUILD A PRACTICE GREEN IN MY
YARD.
I KNOW A LOT OF COURSES USE
BENCH GRASS IN THE FAIRWAY
BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S USED
ON THE GREENS.
I'M WONDERING IF I SHOULD
USE A SPECIFIC TYPE OF GRASS
SEED AND IF IT'S NECESSARY
TO KEEP IT CUT EVERYDAY.
WHAT A GREAT QUESTION.

Kevin says GREAT
QUESTION.
AND I WOULD DEFER TO MY
GREENSKEEPER BUT HE'S NOT
HERE.
ERNIE'S A GREAT FRIEND OF
MINE AND I HAVE A COUPLE
FRIENDS WHO HAVE GREENS IN
THEIR BACKYARD.
THE BENT GRASS IS A GREAT
GRASS TO USE.
IT'S A SEED BECAUSE OUR
CLIMATE IN TORONTO IS SUCH
THAT THE BENT IS A VERY
HARDY, A VERY TOUGH GRASS.
SO I WOULD SAY YES, USE THE
BENT GRASS SEED, WHAT YOU'VE
GOT TO DO IS YOU'VE GOT TO
GET RID OF LIKE THE
BLUEGRASS THAT'S IN YOUR
BACKYARD SO, YOU'VE GOT TO,
YOU KNOW, TAKE UP THED SO,
AND THEN PUT THE BENT GRASS
DOWN.
WHAT YOU'VE GOT TO DO,
YOU'VE GOT TO WATER IT A
LOT.
IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE CUT
EVERYDAY.
YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOOD TO
START WITH?
EVEN IF YOU HAVE AN OLD HAND
MOWER, THEY'RE EXCELLENT,
AND THEN AS YOU PROGRESS AND
YOU WANT TO KEEP IT CUT A
LITTLE TIGHTER, YOU CAN GET
LIKE AN EGRONIMOUS LAWN
MOWER BUT I THINK ONE OF THE
HAND MOWERS IS GOOD ENOUGH
FOR NOW.

Maureen says AND YOUR
GREENS -- SOMETIMES YOU GO
TO A GOLF COURSE AND THE
GREENS ARE REALLY DRY.
THEY'RE OBVIOUSLY NOT
WATERING THAT MUCH.
BUT I GUESS YOU HAVE TO
WORRY ABOUT THE COST AND IF
WE'RE GETTING ENOUGH RAIN
AND ALL OF THAT.
HOW DO YOU GUYS KEEP YOUR
GREENS GREEN?

Kevin says YES.
SEE, AT OUR COURSE OUR
GREENS FEE IS MAYBE HIGHER
THAN THE AVERAGE MUNICIPAL
COURSE.
SO WHEN WE BUILT THE GOLF
COURSE, AND NOW THE COURSE
IS OPEN IN ITS 6th SEASON SO
WE HAD 1 MILLION dollars WORTH OF
IRRIGATION.
WHICH MEANS EVERY NIGHT THE
SPRINKLER SYSTEM WILL COME ON.
WE HAVE AUTOMATIC POP-UPS,
COMPUTERIZED.
SO THEY COME UP AND THEY GET
AN EVEN SPREAD ON THE GREEN.
NOW YEARS AGO I WORKED AT
SEAT TON GOLF CLUB WHICH IS
A FUN GOLF COURSE IN
PICKERING AND WE HAND
WATERED.

Maureen says DID YOU?

Kevin says WE DID.

Maureen says WITH THE HOSES?

Kevin says EXACTLY.
AND AT NIGHT THEY'D GO OUT
AND SOMETIMES PUT THE HOSE
AND THE SPRINKLER WOULD HELP
BUT THIS WAS ALL DONE BY A
SINGLE PERSON.
SO YOU CAN SEE MAYBE AS THE
GREENS FEE GOES UP, THE MORE
TECHNOLOGY'S BEING USED TO
WATER THE GREENS, BUT
THERE'S A LOT OF GREAT
COURSES AROUND WHICH DON'T
CHARGE A BIG GREENS FEE AND
THEIR COURSES ARE
SPECTACULAR.

Maureen says ARE THEY TRYING
TO AVOID HERBICIDES THESE
DAYS?
HOW ARE THEY GETTING RID OF
WEEDS?

YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE A
PRETTY AGGRESSIVE TOP
DRESSING PROGRAMME, WHERE
YOU SORT OF AERIFY THE GREEN,
LET THEM BREATHE.
ALSO IN THE WINTER YOU WANT
TO PUT ON SOME CHEMICALS.
THESE ARE CHEMICALS THAT
AREN'T REALLY HAZARDOUS TO
THE ENVIRONMENT, JUST
CHEMICALS THAT TAKE AWAY
SUCH THINGS AS WEEDS, WINTER
KILL AND SNOW MOULD THAT
KIND OF STUFF.

Maureen says VICTOR IS ON THE
LINE IN CASTLEMAN.
HI VICTOR.

The Caller says HI.

Maureen says HI.

The Caller says I TOOK OUT THE
WIFE GOLFING THERE THE OTHER
DAY.
AND SHE SHOOTS PRETTY
STRAIGHT, SO I WAS THINKING
OF GETTING HER A GRAPHITE SET.
WOULD THAT BE GOOD?

Kevin says YES.
YOU KNOW WHAT?
I LIKE GRAPHITE, I REALLY DO.
WITH TECHNOLOGY, THE FIRST
GRAPHITE, I THINK I PROBABLY
USED, WAS ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO
AND IT WASN'T REALLY
CONSISTENT.
MEANING THE SEVEN IRON AND
THE FIVE IRON WAS MAYBE A
LITTLE MORE WHIPPY, ET
CETERA, BUT NOW THE GRAPHITE
SHAFTS HAS THE CONSISTENCY
OF STEEL, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT?
I THINK THEY'RE A LITTLE
STRAIGHTER, THEY GO A LITTLE
LONGER AND TECHNOLOGY HASN'T
HURT US IN OTHER FIELDS, WHY
NOT USE IT IN GOUGH.
I REALLY PERSONALLY LIKE THE
GRAPHITE.

Maureen says ARE YOURS
GRAPHITE?

Kevin says YES THEY ARE.

Maureen says WHY DON'T YOU
PULL ONE OUT AND SHOW US THE
FLEXIBILITY OF THE GRAPHITE.

Kevin turns to a golf bag and pulls out a club.

He says RIGHT.
AS YOU CAN SEE HERE, IT'S
VERY FLEXIBLE HERE.

He flexes the club slightly and continues
WHAT'LL HAPPEN IS THIS IS
ALMOST THE SAME AS STEEL NOW
SO, THEREFORE IF PEOPLE
THINK I HIT REALLY HARD, I
BETTER USE STEEL SHAFTS --.

Maureen says MIGHT BREAK IT.

Kevin says EXACTLY,
MIGHT BREAK IT, NO.
THESE TECHNOLOGY, THE
GRAPHITE REALLY THE SAME AS
STEEL NOW.

Maureen says OKAY, WHAT DO
YOU HAVE TO SPEND TO GET
CLUBS, GOOD CLUBS?
IS THERE A BIG DIFFERENCE IF
YOU SPEND 500 OR 1300 dollars?

Kevin says THERE IS A
BIG DIFFERENCE BUT A LOT OF
IT -- I WOULD SEE WHAT THE
PERSON'S DOING.
IF THEY PLAY ONCE A MONTH, I
WOULD SAY LET'S GET SOME
NICE WILSONS AT 499 dollars.
THEY'RE LOWER-LINE, MAYBE
THE PRO DISAFS OR SOMETHING.
IF THE PERSON'S PLAYING
EVERYDAY AND, YOU KNOW,
WANTS TO BE ON THE SENIOR
PGA TOUR, OKAY, LET'S TALK
ABOUT THE CALLAWAYS, LET'S
TALK ABOUT THE TITULUS.
WHAT'LL HAPPEN IS IF YOU'RE
PLAYING EVERY SO OFTEN, THE
500 dollars FOR THE CLUBS IS A
GREAT SET OF CLUBS.
THEY REALLY ARE.
YOU'VE GOT TO SORT OF KNOW
YOUR GAME.
I WOULD SAY TALK TO YOUR
GOLF PROFESSIONAL, OR AT A
PRO SHOP AND SAY THIS IS HOW
MANY TIMES I PLAY, THIS IS
MY SKILL, AND YOU KNOW, DO
YOU WANT THE SET TO LAST YOU
A LIFETIME?
DO YOU JUST WANT TO HAVE
THEM FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS
AND THEN GET A BETTER ON A
TRADE-IN AND HE'LL HAVE THE
ANSWERS.
THERE'S A BIG DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN A 500 dollar SET AND A
3,000 dollar set BUT FOR THE AVERAGE
PLAYER WHO PLAYS TWO OR
THREE TIMES A MONTH, 500 dollars
IS A GOOD SET.

Maureen says OKAY, WOODY IN
CAMBRIDGE.

The Caller says HI KEVIN.
I JUST WANT TO SAY WE HELD A
TOURNAMENT AT ANGUS GLEN A
COUPLE WEEKS AGO THERE AND
YOUR SERVICE WAS JUST THE
BEST.
I GOT A CHANCE TO COMPLIMENT
YOU BEFORE THERE, BUT MIGHT
AS WELL DO IT ON THE AIR
HERE.

Kevin says THANK YOU.
THAT'S VERY NICE.

The Caller says LISTEN, LIKE A
LOT OF GOLFERS, MIDDLE AGED,
OVERWEIGHT, BAD KNEES FROM
FOOTBALL AND CAN'T SWING
LIKE A PRO.
SO I'M STRONG BUT I'VE GOT A
WEAK DRIVER.
HITTING THE OTHER CLUBS
FAIRLY WELL THOUGH,
ESPECIALLY FROM A NICELY
MANICURED COURSE LIKE YOURS.
LITTLE HELP?

Kevin says YOU KNOW
WHAT?
IF DRIVERS -- DRIVER IS YOUR
WEAK POINT WHAT WE'VE GOT TO
DO IS GET YOU UP ON THE
RANGE AND TRY FOUR OR FIVE
OF THEM BECAUSE YOU KNOW
WHAT?
IT COULD BE THE LOT OF, IT
COULD BE THE FLEX.
A LOT OF PEOPLE I SEE ARE
GOING TO TWO WOODS THESE
DAYS BECAUSE DRIVERS LIKE
9 degrees -- WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS
LOT OF.
PRETTY WELL STRAIGHT UP AND
DOWN.
IN YEARS GONE BY WITH WOOD
THERE USED TO BE 11 degrees AND 12 degrees
LOFTS.
I THINK WE'VE GOT TO GET
THREE OR FOUR IN YOUR HAND.
YOU'RE GOING TO FIND ONE.
DIFFERENT SHAFT, DIFFERENT
LOOK, DIFFERENT FEEL THAT
SORT OF THING.
WE'VE GOT TO FIND ONE.
ESPECIALLY IF YOUR IRONS ARE
GOING PRETTY GOOD, LET'S GET
A DRIVER FOUR.
CAMBRIDGE, A LOT OF GREAT
CORES IN THAT AREA, YOU CAN
GO OUT AND FIND SOMEONE
WHO'S GOING TO LET YOU TEST
DRIVE THREE OR FOUR AND
THANKS FOR THE KIND WORDS.
WE LOVE HAVING YOU OUT.

The Caller says MY PLEASURE.
THANK YOU.

Maureen says I JUST WONDERED,
FOR DRIVING FOR MEN,
SOMETIMES -- I DON'T SEE
THEM ALWAYS USING THE SAME
WOOD.
WHAT DETERMINE WHAT'S YOU'LL
USE TO TEE OFF WITH?

Kevin says RIGHT.
USUALLY IF IT'S A SORT OF
WIDE OPEN HOLE AND IT'S A
LONG HOLE, YOU'LL TO WANT
HIT YOUR DRIVER.
YOUR DRIVER ISN'T AS
STRAIGHT AS LIKE A THREE
WOOD OR A FIVE WOOD BUT IT
GOES FURTHER.
SO THAT'S WHAT I LIKE ABOUT
GOLF.
IT'S A THINKING MAN'S GAME.
YOU'LL SEE ONE HOLE, LET'S
SAY HOLE NUMBER ONE AT EVEN
A TOUR STOP.
A COUPLE GUYS'LL HIT THEIR
DRIVER, A COUPLE HIT THREE
WOODS, A COUPLE OTHERS HIT
THREE IRONS BECAUSE YOU KNOW
WHAT?
IF THERE'S DANGER ON THE
RIGHT SIDE AND THE PERSON'S
WORRIED ABOUT THE DRIVER,
THEY'LL HIT THEIR THREE WOOD
TO KEEP IT IN PLAY.
THEY HAVE A LITTLE LONGER
SHOT GOING INTO THE GREEN
BUT THEY DON'T WANT TO LOSE
THAT BALL OFF THE TEE AND
TAKE A PENALTY STROKE.

Maureen says OKAY.
ALL RIGHT.
THANKS WOODY.
GOOD LUCK.
KATE IS NEXT.
HI KATE.

The Caller says HI MAUREEN, HOW
ARE YOU?

Maureen says HI, WE'RE FINE.

The Caller says GOOD.
I WANTED TO ASK KEVIN -- I
WANTED TO START TAKING UP
GOLF, GET MORE INTO IT AND
MY SISTER AND I WERE GOING
TO DO THAT BUT HOW WOULD WE
FIND A PLACE TO GO TO WHERE
WE WOULDN'T FEEL INTIMIDATED
AND THAT WE WOULDN'T HAVE TO
BOOK SORT OF THREE MONTHS IN
ADVANCE?
IS THERE A SORT OF VERY
BEGINNER'S PLACE THAT YOU
CAN GO TO OTHER THAN A
DRIVING RANGE?

Kevin says GREAT.
GREAT IDEA.
THERE'S TWO AVENUES FOR THAT
YOU COULD FIND SORT OF LOCAL
DRIVING RANGE OR THE LOCAL
GOLF COURSE AND SET UP A
SERIES OF LESSONS.
THAT'S ONE THING TO GET YOU
IN THE GAME.
I FINDS, BECAUSE MY WIFE
PLAYS, FRIENDS OF MINE PLAY,
AND THEY DON'T PLAY A LOT,
PAR THREE COURSES, LIKE --
YOU KNOW, THERE'S SOME IN
EAST TORONTO, WEST TORONTO.
PAR THREE COURSES WHERE
MAYBE THE AVERAGE DISTANCE
IS 100 YARDS.
YOU CAN GO OUT, SWING THE
CLUB, YOU GET TO CHIP, PUT,
USE YOUR SAND SHOT.
THIS IS A LOT MORE USER
FRIENDLY THAN SAY, YOU KNOW,
IF YOU'RE NOT PLAYING LOT TO
GO TO GLEN ABBEY OR TO COME
TO MY GOLF COURSE AND
THEY'RE A LITTLE LONG.
I WOULD SAY GO TO YOUR LOCAL
DRIVING RANGE OR THE LOCAL
GOLF COURSE, ASK A PRO FOR
SOME ADVICE.
FIRST OF ALL ON SOME LESSONS
AND SECOND OF ALL SAY WHERE
IN THE AREA COULD I PLAY?
MAYBE IT'S A PAR THREE OR
EVEN AN EXECUTIVE COURSE.
THERE'S A LOT OUT THERE AND
THEY'RE REALLY GREAT GOLF
COURSES.

Maureen says WHAT IS AN
EXECUTIVE COURSE?

Kevin says EXECUTIVE
COURSE, THEY SAY A STANDARD
GOLF COURSE IS USUALLY PAR
70 OR PAR 72.
WE KNOW A PAR THREE, IF IT'S
AN 18 HOLE GOLF COURSE IT'S
PAR 54.
IT'S SORT OF IN THE MIDDLE.
IT'S AN EXECUTIVE COURSE.
IT DOESN'T TAKE AS LONG TO
PLAY, IT'S A LITTLE SHORTER
AND HAS SOME PAR FOUR'S AND
PAR FIVES.
PAR FOUR IS 400 YARDS, IT'S
A LONG HOLE FOR A LOTS OF
PEOPLE.
IF THE PAR'S 30 YARDS OR 280
YARDS AT THE EXECUTIVE
COURSE, YOU CAN PLAY IT,
HAVE FUN, MAYBE GET A BIRDIE
AND DOESN'T TAKE SO LONG TO
PLAY.
IT'S JUST A QUICK ARCH.

Maureen says WHO DECIDES WHAT
THE PAR IS ON THAT COURSE?
ON THAT PARTICULAR DRIVE?

Kevin says EXACTLY.
THERE'S SORT OF RULES OF HAND.
THE COURSE ARCHITECT OR THE
PERSON, THE OWNER WOULD DO
THAT.
USUALLY IF A GOLF HOLE IS
LIKE SAY 240 YARDS OR 230
YARDS OR LESS IT'S A PAR
THREE BECAUSE YOU CAN HIT IT
IN ONE SHOT.

Maureen says YOU CAN HIT IT
IN ONE SHOT.

Kevin says AT TIMES.
ANYTHING LIKE 280 YARDS TO
SAY 480 YARDS OR 440 OR 450
YARDS IS A PAR FOUR BECAUSE
YOU CAN HIT IT IN TWO SHOTS.
AND PAR FIVE, SOMETIMES YOU
CAN HIT A PAR FIVE IN TWO
SHOTS BUT THEY'RE USUALLY A
LITTLE LONGER.
I KNOW SOME THAT ARE 470 OR
480 YARDS, YOU CAN GET WILL
IN TWO, BUT THERE'S LOTS OF
WATER, LOTS OF SAND, SO IT'S
A RISK.
IT SHOULD BE A PAR FIVE
BECAUSE IT'S A REAL TOUGH
HOLE BUT IF YOU HIT THE
SECOND SHOT JUST RIGHT YOU
GET REWARDED.

Maureen says YOU KNOW WHAT
KATE MEANS THOUGH, BECAUSE
I'M NOT A GREAT PLAYER AND
SO I DO FEEL A LITTLE
INTIMIDATED OUT THERE.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE GOLF
ETIQUETTE, YOU KNOW, THE
MANNERS THAT WE SHOULD KNOW
ABOUT, SO WE CAN FEEL
INTIMIDATED BUT WE'RE NOT
GOING TO BE -- YOU KNOW,
THEY'RE NOT GOING TO BEAR
DOWN ON US AND GIVE US HECK.

Kevin says RIGHT.
WE DO THAT IN OUR CLINICS.
WE HAVE MEN'S AND LADIES
CLINICS, BEGINNERS.
WE TALK ABOUT ETIQUETTE,
FIXING YOUR BALL MARK IF YOU
HIT THE GREEN.
IF YOU TAKE A DIVOT OUT OF
THE FAIRWAY
PUT IT BACK.
ALSO, JUST KEEPING UP WITH
WITH THE GROUP IN FRONT OF YOU.
I HAVE NO PROBLEM
WHATSOEVER.
PLAY WITH A LOT OF YOUNG
LADIES AND WHAT'LL HAPPEN IS
IT'S NOT THE YOUNG LADIES, A
LOT OF TIMES IT'S THE YOUNG
MEN WHO GO OUT THERE AND
THEY'RE PRACTICING AND
STUFF.
THE BIGGEST THING IS JUST TO
KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP IN
FRONT OF YOU BECAUSE THE
PEOPLE BEHIND YOU, THEY'RE
HAVING FUN, TOO.
AND ALSO THERE'S LITTLE
THINGS, LIKE IF YOU'RE
PLAYING WITH MAYBE ONE
TWOSOME, JOINING ANOTHER
TWOSOME, WHEN YOU'RE ON THE
GREEN AND THE COMPETITOR'S
BALL'S 15 FEET FROM THE PIN
YOU JUST DON'T WALK IN FRONT
OF THEIR BALL.
THERE'S JUST LITTLE THINGS
LIKE THAT.
AND THAT CAN BE TAUGHT AND
YOU'LL ENJOY THE GAME MORE
AND PEOPLE YOU'RE PLAYING
WITH WILL ENJOY PLAYING WITH
YOU.

Maureen says THANKS FOR THE
CALL.
RON IS IN LONDON.
HI RON.

The Caller says HOW ARE YOU
TODAY?

Maureen says GOOD.

The Caller says THAT'S GREAT TO
HEAR.
I'M A LEFT HANDED GOLFER AND
I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIND
INFORMATION ON LEFT HANDED
TECHNIQUES, MORE INFORMATION
OR ANYTHING IN GOLF DIGEST,
OR ANYTHING YOU READ ABOUT,
IT'S MORE GEARED FOR THE
RIGHT HANDED GOLFER.
DO YOU KNOW WHERE A PERSON
COULD GET ANY INFORMATION ON
MORE LEFT HANDED
INFORMATION?

Kevin says YOU KNOW WHAT?
THERE IS A LEFT HANDED
GOLFER'S ASSOCIATION NOW.
I'M SURE AFTER THEY'LL
EITHER GIVE THE NUMBER OF
THE GOLF COURSE, CALL ME,
I'LL GET THAT PHONE NUMBER
FOR YOU.
ALSO, GOLF DIGEST ONCE IN A
WHILE, BECAUSE OF PHIL
MICKELSON, ET CETERA, NOW
THEY WILL SHOW A LOT MORE
LEFT HANDED TIPS, ET CETERA.
MIKE WIMDER, WHO'S TOP
CANADIAN ON TOUR, HE'S ALSO
LEFT HANDED.
SO YOU KNOW WHAT?
I AGREE WITH YOU.
WHEN I PICK UP THESE BOOK,
EVERYTHING'S GEARED TO THE
RIGHT HANDED PERSON.
YOU LOOK AT THE NEW DRIVERS,
HERE'S THE NEWEST RIGHT
HANDED DRIVER.
I'LL EVEN GO SO FAR AS TO
SAY SOME OF THE NEW IRONS
ARE OUT AND SOME'LL SAY
GREAT, I LOVE THOSE.
GET ME THE LEFT HANDED.
THEY'RE NOT AVAILABLE.
WAIT A SECOND!
SEE IN CANADA PROBABLY 40 percent
OF GOLFERS NOW ARE LEFT
HANDED WHERE IN THE STATES
PROBABLY ABOUT 10 percent OF
GOLFERS ARE LEFT HANDED.
SO YOU KNOW WHAT?
IF YOU GIVE ME A CALL I'LL
GET THAT YOU NUMBER.
I PUTT LEFT HANDED SO I FEEL
A LITTLE SLIGHTED SOMETIMES.

Maureen says RON, YOU LNTED
IN EVERYTHING ELSE AS WELL?

The Caller says NO.

Maureen says JUST WHEN YOU
GOLF?

The Caller says NO, I'M KIND OF
BOTH-HANDED.
I CAN HAMMER NAILS WITH MY
RIGHT HAND AND MY LEFT HAND.

Maureen says BUT WHAT DO YOU
WRITE WITH?

The Caller says MY RIGHT HAND.

Maureen says THIS IS LIKE MY
HUSBAND.
HE SWINGS A BAT LEFT HANDED,
GOLFS LEFT HANDED, WRITES
RIGHT HANDED.

Kevin says EXACTLY
AND THAT'S NOT A BAD WAY TO
GO, ESPECIALLY BEING LEFT
HANDED, YOUR POWER HAND IS
YOUR TOP HAND SO THEREFORE
IT'S YOUR RIGHT HAND.
AND I'VE SEEN PEOPLE WHO
WRITE LEFT HANDED, PLAY LEFT
HANDED.
I'VE SEEN PEOPLE WHO WRITE
RIGHT HANDED PLAY LEFT
HANDED.
SO I THINK THAT RON WAS
PROBABLY A GREAT HOCKEY
PLAYER AS A KID AND THAT'S
WHY HE'S LEFT HANDED.

Maureen says YOU MENTION MIKE
WIER.
WHO ARE SOME OTHER GREAT
CANADIANS WE SHOULD BE
WATCHING FOR.

Kevin says WELL
MIKE'S ON THE MEN'S TOUR,
OUR NUMBER ONE GOLFER RIGHT
NOW.
STEPHEN AIMS, WE'VE ADOPTED
STEPHEN AIMS, HE'S ACTUALLY
FROM TRINIDAD, MARRIED A
YOUNG LADY FROM CALGARY.
ALSO ROBERT MORELAND,
PLAYING ON THE PGA TOUR,
GLEN HNATIUK WHO'S FROM
WESTERN CANADA.
THESE ARE SORT OF
LESSER-KNOWN NAMES BECAUSE
THEY HAVEN'T WON A
TOURNAMENT YET.
BUT IN THE LPGA WE HAVE A
WONDERFUL ARRAY OF YOUNG
LADIES.
LAURIE KANE WHO'S A GREAT
GOLFER.
SHE'S CONSISTENTLY THE TOP
THREE, TOP FIVE GOLFERS IN
ACTUALLY I WOULD SAY THE
WORLDMENT A.J. EATHORNE
WHO'S A YOUNG LADY, A GREAT
PLAYER.
DAWN COE-JONES WHO'S BEEN
GREAT FOR YEARS AND NANCY
HARVEY.
SO ON THE LADY'S TOUR, WE'VE
REALLY BEEN COMPETITIVE FOR
YEARS.
THE MEN'S TOUR WITH THE CROP
OF YOUNG GUYS WE'VE GOT NOW,
WE'RE STARTING TO BECOME
COMPETITIVE.

Maureen says GOOD.
OKAY, LET'S GO TO RICHARD IN
MARKHAM.
HELLO RICHARD.

The Caller says HI THERE.
HI KEVIN, HOW ARE YOU TODAY?

Kevin says RICHARD,
HOW ARE YOU?

Kevin says I'M FINE.
I JUST HAD A QUESTION.
MY THREE WOOD SEEMS TO GO
STRAIGHT BUT AS SOON AS I
PULL OUT MY DRIVER I HAVE AN
EXTREME SLICE.

Kevin says YOU KNOW
WHAT HAPPENS, RIGHT.
THE DRIVER YOU HAVE IS
PROBABLY TWO INCHES, MAYBE
EVEN THREE INCHES, DEPENDING
ON YOUR DRIVER, LONGER THAN
THE THREE WOOD.
ALSO THE LOFT.
YOUR THREE-WOOD'S SAY A 14 degrees
LOFT, GIVE OR TAKE ONE OR
TWO DEGREES.
THE DRIVER IS NINE SO
THERE'S SO MUCH MORE
DEFLECTION.
WHAT YOU'RE PROBABLY DOING
IS PUTTING A DIFFERENT SWING
ON THE DRIVER.
WHAT I WOULD SAY IS IF
YOU'RE DRIVER IS ONE OF THE
OVERSIZED DRIVERS, IT
PROBABLY IS, IT'S A LOT
LONGER.
MAYBE YOU WANT TO TRY A
CONVENTIONAL DRIVER FOR NOW
BECAUSE YOU'VE GOT MORE
CONTROL, THE LOFT IS ABOUT
10 degrees AND IT'S NOT AS LONG.
YEARS AGO THE DRIVERS WERE
42 INCHES, NOW THEY'RE 45
INCHES STANDARD, THEY'RE
THREE INCHES LONGER AND IT'S
HARDER TO HIT WHEN YOU'VE
GOT THAT MUCH SHAFT ON THE
CLUB.
I WOULD SAY FOR YOURSELF IF
YOU LIKE THE THREE WOOD,
MAYBE EVEN TRY WHAT WE CALL
A TWO WOOD.
LIKE A 12 degrees OR 13 degrees DRIVER.
AND LIKE I SAID, A LOT OF
PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO LET
YOU DEMO A CLUB, AND I
REALLY BELIEVE IN THAT.
I WANT YOU TO TRYTA TWO WOOD,
AND IF YOU GET THAT UNDER
CONTROL, MAYBE WE GO BACK TO
THE DRIVER.
IT'S NOT YOUR SWING SO MUCH,
IT'S JUST THAT WHAT'S
HAPPENING IS THE LOFT AND
THE LENGTH IS MAYBE TOO MUCH
FOR YOU.

Maureen says HOW MANY WOODS
ARE THERE?

Kevin says THERE'S
MANY WOODS.
THE CONVENTIONAL SET IF I
WALKED IN AND SAID I WANT TO
BUY A SET, WOODS AND IRONS,
THREE WOODS.
NUMBER ONE WOOD WHICH IS A
DRIVER, A THREE WOOD AND A
FIVE WOOD.
BUT NOW, YOU KNOW WHAT?
THE THREE IRONS AND THE TWO
IRONS, TWO IRONS AREN'T SOLD
SO MUCH ANYMORE, THEY'RE
HARD TO HIT.
YOU KNOW, THEY'VE GOT VERY
LITTLE LOFT ON THEM, PER SE,
SO WHAT HAPPENS IS THE SEVEN
WOOD NOW, SEVEN WOOD, A LOT
OF SENIORS USED TO USE THEM,
AND EVEN THEY THOUGHT THAT
LADIES USED THEM.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT?
A LOT OF PEOPLE ON THE PGA
TOUR NOW HAVE A SEVEN WOOD.
THERE'S ALSO A NINE WOOD,
ALSO AN ELEVEN WOOD.
CONVENTIONAL WOODS ARE A ONE,
THREE, FIVE, SEVEN.

Maureen says WHAT DO YOU
THINK OF WOMEN WHO USE THEIR
WOOD ON THE FAIRWAY.

Kevin says YEAH, SURE.

Maureen says IT'S OKAY?

Kevin says IT'S OKAY.
BECAUSE THE DRIVER PER SE IS
USED USUALLY ON THE TEE FROM
THE TEEING GROUND.
ONCE IT GETS IN THE MIDDLE
OF THE FAIRWAY, USE A THREE
WOOD, USE A FIVE WOOD, USE A
SEVEN WOOD.
WHATEVER YOUR FAVOURITE WOOD
IS?
HIT IT.

Maureen says YOU NEVER SEE
MEN USING WOODS ON THE
FAIRWAY!

Kevin says I THINK
THEY THINK THEY'RE MACHO.

Maureen says THEY WOULDN'T BE
CAUGHT DEAD.
IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT
YOUR SWING, DRIVE,
PUTTING -- WE HAVEN'T HAD
PUTTING QUESTIONS -- GIVE US
A CALL HERE AT “MORE TO LIFE.”

The numbers and email reappear briefly.

Maureen says AND ANTHONY IS
IN MAPLE.
HI ANT ME, WELCOME.

The Caller says HI, HOW ARE YOU DOING?

Maureen says GOOD, THANKS.

The Caller says GOOD.
MY QUESTION IS QUITE
INTERESTING.
I'M ABLE TO GO TO THE
DRIVING RANGE AND NOT MISS
ONE BALL.
PEOPLE STOP TO WATCH ME HIT
THE BALL BECAUSE I'VE BEEN
SO CONSIST FOR SO LONG.
THEN MY PROBLEM IS WHEN I GO
TO THE COURSE, I CANNOT TALK
MY GAME FROM THE DRIVING
RANGE TO THE COURSE AND I'VE
BEEN ALL OVER THE MAP.
FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF
YEARS -- LIKE I'VE SHOT IN
THE 70s AND NOW I'M WELL
OVER 100.
I'M SO CONFUSED.
I KNOW IT'S A MENTAL BLOCK
BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW TO
OVERCOME, REALLY.

Kevin says YOU KNOW
WHAT IT IS?
SURE IT'S A MENTAL BLOCK AND
THAT'S THE FIRST THING
YOU'RE GOING TO SEE BUT I
DON'T BELIEVE THAT.
I THINK WHAT HAPPENS --
YOU'VE JUST TOLD ME YOU HIT
IT WELL ON THE DRIVING RANGE
SO YOU SHOULDN'T BE OVER
100.
WHAT'LL HAPPEN IS YOU'RE ON
THE DRIVING RANGE, YOU'RE
RELAXED.
THERE'S NO TREES ON THE
RIGHT, THERE'S NO WATER ON
THE LEFT, THIS SORT OF
THING.
SO YOU'RE RELAXED, YOU TAKE
A SMOOTH SWING AND YOU HIT
IT OUT THERE.
OH, LET'S HIT ANOTHER ONE.
SAME THING.
YOU'RE RELAXED, YOUR BODY'S
NOT TENSE.
SMOOTH SWING.
WHAT YOU'VE GOT TO DO IS
YOU'VE GOT TO LEARN TO RELAX
ON A GOLF COURSE AND SWING A
LITTLE SMOOTHER.
I FIND MYSELF DOING IT, TOO.
I GET A LITTLE QUICK ON THE
DRIVING RANGE I'LL STAND OUT
THERE, BE RELAXED, IT
DOESN'T MATTER IF I HIT ONE
LEFT, HIT ONE RIGHT.
BUT ONCE YOU GET TO THAT
FIRST TEE, YOUR GRIP'S
PROBABLY A LITTLE TIGHTER,
ALSO WHAT HAPPENS IS YOU
DON'T KNOW IT BUT YOU
ACTUALLY DO -- AND IT'S
DOCUMENTED -- THAT YOU SWING
FASTER ON THE GOLF COURSE.
SO I THINK WHAT YOU'RE DOING
IS PROBABLY SWINGING FASTER
ON THE GOLF COURSE AND AS
SOON AS YOU MAKE CONTACT
WITH THE BALL YOU'RE
PROBABLY JUST LIFTING UP TO
SEE WHERE IT WENT, TO SEE IF
IT'S IN THE FAIRWAY OR ON A
PAR THREE, LIFTING UP JUST,
I'M TALKING MILLISECOND TO
SEE WHERE IT WENT.
SO WHAT YOU'VE GOT TO DO,
AND TRY THIS.
GET OUT ON THE GOLF COURSE
AND TRY TO SWING SLOWER THAN
YOU EVER SWUNG IN YOUR LIFE.
ON THE GOLF COURSE, YOU MEAN,
NOT THE DRIVING RANGE.
AND ALSO IF YOU CAN KEEP
YOUR HEAD DOWN, THE BALL'S
GOING NOWHERE.
YOU KIND OF KNOW WHERE IT'S
GOING.
KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN WHEN
YOU'RE SWINGING, COUNT TO
TWO.
BECAUSE WHAT YOU'RE DOING,
AND I SEE 95 percent OF GOLFERS DO
THIS I HIT THE BALL, I WANT
TO SEE WHERE IT'S GOING, I
LIFT UP.
SO SLOW IT DOWN.
EVEN DEEP BREATHS.
I MEAN, IF YOU'VE GOT TO
TAKE SOME BREATHS BECAUSE
THE TENSION GETS IN HERE,
THE GOLF SWING, WHEN YOU
WATCH THOSE GENTLEMEN ON
TOUR AND THE LADIES ON TOUR,
THEY ARE SO SMOOTH.
WE GO “HOW CAN THEY HIT IT
280 YARDS OFF THE TEE WITH
THAT SMOOTH A SWING?”
BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT?
THEY'RE NOT TIGHT LIKE WE
ARE.
SO PLEASE, SLOW THE SWING
DOWN, AND I MEAN, PHYSICALLY
SLOW IT DOWN TO THE POINT
WHERE YOU'VE NEVER BEEN THAT
SLOW IN YOUR LIFE ON THE
COURSE.

Maureen says AND MAYBE HAVE
SOMEBODY WATCH YOU AS YOU'RE
SWINGING, BECAUSE THEY'RE
ALWAYS THE ONES TO TELL ME
“YOU LIFTED YOUR HEAD.”
“I DID NOT.”
BUT THEY ALL SAY YES YOU DO.

Kevin says RIGHT,
IT'S ONE OF THESE THINGS
WHERE WE ALL PLAY AND GIVE
EACH OTHER LESSONS.
AND MAYBE THAT'S NOT RIGHT
BUT IF THERE'S A COUPLE
THINGS LIKE KEEPING YOUR
HEAD DOWN OR SLOW YOUR SWING
DOWN A LITTLE, YOUR FRIENDS
WHO PLAYS WITH YOU SAYS OH,
YEAH, THAT WAS A BETTER
SWING.
YEAH, AFTER IMPACT YOUR HEAD
WAS DOWN.
REDO, YOU WANT TO SEE, IT'S
GOLF.
LIKE BASEBALL, ANY SPORT,
YOU WANT TO SEE WHERE THE
BALL WENT.
SO ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU HIT
IT AND YOU'RE UP AND NOW
YOUR BODY INSTEAD OF DOING
THIS AND THEN FOLLOWING
THROUGH, WHAT YOU'RE DOING
IS YOU'RE LIFTING UP NOW.
SO EVERYTHING'S CHANGED.

Maureen says YOU SAY YOU GOLF
WITH YOUR WIFE?

Kevin says YES.

Maureen says DOES THAT WORK
OUT ALL RIGHT?

Kevin says WORKS OUT GREAT.

Maureen says DO YOU GIVE HER
A LOT OF TIPS?

Kevin says I DON'T
AND WHAT IS FUNNY, IT'S
BECAUSE SOMEONE'LL SAY TO
HER “HEY, YOU'RE MARRIED TO
A GOLF PRO, YOU MUST BE A
GREAT GOLFER?” AND SHE'LL
SAY “NO, I DON'T GET MANY
LESSONS OFF HIM.”
WE HAVE A LOT OF COUPLES
NIGHTS WHERE WE PLAY WITH
OUR FRIENDS AND OTHER
COUPLES AND STUFF AND YOU
KNOW WHAT?
WE HAVE FUN.
AND IF IF SHE SAYS TO ME IN
THE CAR “HEY, WHAT AM I
DOING WRONG?
I'M GOING TO HELP HER,
BUT --

Maureen says BUT IF SHE
DOESN'T ASK, DON'T HELP HER.

Kevin says EXACTLY.
WE'RE OUT THERE FOR FUN.

Maureen says TOM IN
COLLINGWOOD IS NEXT.
HI TOM.

The Caller says HI.

Maureen says HI.

The Caller says HOW ARE YOU?

Maureen says GOOD THANKS.

The Caller says KEVIN, IT'S BEEN
A LONG TIME SINCE I'VE
TALKED TO YOU.

Kevin says HOW ARE
YOU?

The Caller says GOOD.
TOM SUMMERS.

Kevin says HEY TOM!
GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU.

The Caller says COUPLE QUESTIONS.
WHAT'S THE AVERAGE RATE FOR
AN HOURLY LESSON.

Kevin says YOU KNOW
WHAT?
TOM AND I GO WAY BACK, TOM'S
FATHER OWNS SEAT TON GOLF
CLUB WHERE I USED TO WORK,
TOM'S NOW THERE, HE'S NOW UP
IN COLLINGWOOD.
DEPENDING AT GOLF PRO BEEN
THERE THREE, FOUR YEARS
MIGHT BE 30, 35 dollars.
ONCE YOU GET AN A-CLASS PRO,
BEEN THERE FIVE OR SIX YEARS,
I'M THINKING OF THE PEOPLE
WORKING AT ANGUS GLEN OR
SEAT TON, THAT SORT OF THING,
PROBABLY AROUND 50 dollars.
USUALLY THAT'LL INCLUDE
BALLS.
THEN YOU GET SPECIALISTS,
SPECIALISTS LIKE PAUL WILSON
WHO WORKED WITH US, PERRY
KIRSTEN, DAVE KAUFMAN, I CAN
GO ON, THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO
MAKE THEIR LIVING AT
TEACHING.
THEY'RE FABULOUS PEOPLE.
THEY MIGHT BE 80 dollars FOR A HALF
AN HOUR, THEY MIGHT BE 115 dollars
FOR 45 MINUTES BUT I WOULD
SAY THE AVERAGE LESSON FEE
WOULD BE BETWEEN 35 AND 50 dollars
FOR A HALF HOUR.

Maureen says AND WHAT ELSE
DID YOU WANT TO KNOW, TOM?

The Caller says WELL I
NEED AN HONEST OPINION FROM
Kevin.

Maureen says OKAY.

The Caller says HE KNOWS
WHAT KIND OF GOLFER I AM AND
I KNOW WHAT KIND OF GOLFER
HE IS, BUT I WANT TO KNOW
HIS HONEST OPINION ON WHAT
IS THE MOST -- OR WHAT
SHOULD BE THE MOST PENSIVE
CLUB IN THE BAG.

Kevin says THE MOST
EXPENSIVE CLUB IN THE BAG?
I THINK IT SHOULD BE YOUR
PUTTER, BUT BECAUSE THAT'S
THE ONE YOU TAKE THE MOST
SHOTS WITH.
BUT LOOKING AT THEM, YOU
KNOW WHAT?
I'M LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, I'M
LIKE YOU, BECAUSE YOU HIT IT
FAR AND YOU AND I HAVE
TALKED ABOUT DRIVERS ALL THE
TIME.
I THINK THE DRIVER WITH WILL
BE THE MOST EXPENSIVE CLUB
IN THE BAG, BUT I REALLY
FEEL IT SHOULD BE THE
PUTTER.
YOU KNOW, I'VE GOT A PUTTER
I'VE USED FOR 20 YEARS, IT
COST ME 50 dollars SO I'M NOT ONE
TO TALK BUT THE PUTTER IS
THE ONE YOU USE ALL YOUR
SHOTS WITH.

Maureen says NOT FOR ME.
WHAT DO YOU THINK, TOM?

Kevin says THAT'S
EXACTLY WHAT I THINK.

The Caller says I HAVE THREE
PUTTERS IN MY TRUNK,
DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF
GREEN I'M GOING TO BE
PLAYING ON, I CHOOSE MY
PUTTER ACCORDINGLY.

Kevin says EXACTLY,
AND HE'S TRUE.
BECAUSE TOM, WHEN YOU PLAY
FAST GREENS, WHEN YOU PLAY
SLOW GREENS IT'S A DIFFERENT
SET-UP.
THE DRIVER'S A DRIVER.
SURE, THERE'S SOME TEE
GROUNDS CUT A LITTLE TIGHTER
BUT YOU GET THE TEE IN THE
GROUND, IT'S THE PUTTER
WHERE YOU MAKE OR BREAK YOUR
SCORE.

The Caller says EXACTLY, BECAUSE
WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT, NO
MATTER WHAT COURSE IT IS
AROUND THE COUNTRY OR WORLD
YOU MAY PULL YOUR DRIVER OUT
MAYBE 14 TIMES AT THE MOST.

Kevin says MAXIMUM.
THAT'S IF YOU HIT EVERY PAR
FOUR AND PAR FIVE.

The Caller says EXACTLY.
NOW HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU
PULL YOUR PUTTER OUT?

Kevin says YOU'RE
USUALLY putting... IF YOU PUTT
TWICE ON EVERY HOLE IT'S 36 PUTTS.

Maureen says WOW YOU GUYS
REALLY GIVE THIS A LOT OF
THOUGHT!
I'M ALWAYS BORROWING A
PUTTER.
ANYWAY, THANKS A LOT FOR THE
CALL, TOM.

The Caller says NICE
TALKING TO YOU KEV.

Kevin says SEE YOU
SOON, TOM.
BYE-BYE.

Maureen says WE WERE TALKING
ABOUT HOURS OF GOLF LESSONS.
HOW MANY HOURS WOULD THE
AVERAGE PERSON NEED?

Kevin says I USUALLY
LIKE TO THINK THAT, YOU KNOW,
A HALF HOUR LESSON,
SERIOUSLY, WITH ALMOST EVERY
GOLF PRO I KNOW GETS TO 40
MINUTES.
WE DON'T CUT SOMEONE OFF.
I MEAN, WE'RE SITTING THERE
WATCHING BUT I WOULD SAY A
SERIES OF FOUR IF YOU'RE
STARTING.
IF YOU'VE PLAYED 20 YEARS
AND YOU JUST WANT A TUNE-UP,
ONE OR TWO ARE FINE.
I WOULD SAY A SERIES OF FOUR,
BECAUSE YOU GET A LITTLE
BETTER A PRICE WITH A SERIES
BUT YOU GO ON A WEDNESDAY
NIGHT AT 7:00 AND THEN
PRACTICE ONCE OR TWICE
DURING THE WEEK, GO BACK
NEXT WEDNESDAY AT WHATEVER
TIME YOU WOULD LIKE, I WOULD
SAY ONCE A WEEK FOR FOUR
WEEKS FOR THE PERSON WHO
REALLY WANTS TO LEARN THE
GAME.

Maureen says OKAY.
ALL RIGHT, EVELYN IS IN
HAVILOCK.
HELLO, EVELYN.

The Caller says YES.

Maureen says HI.

The Caller says HELLO?

Maureen says YES, GO AHEAD.

The Caller says I WONDER IF YOU
CAN TELL ME HOW I DO FIGURE
OUT MY HANDICAP, AND WHAT DO
THEY MEAN BY A SCRATCHED
PLAYER.

Kevin says I'LL START
WITH A SCRATCH PLAYER FIRST.
A SCRATCH MEANS A ZERO
HANDICAP.
NO HANDICAP.
USUALLY PGA PLAYERS OR KEN
HAS SOME GREAT AMATEURS WHO
ARE SCRATCH PLAYERS AND I
ANSWER THAT ONE FIRST
BECAUSE I USE SCRATCH IN MY
ANALOGY OF THE ANDY CAP.
HOW YOU FIGURE OUT YOUR
HANDICAP IS EVERY GOLF
COURSE, ALMOST EVERY GOLF
COURSE HAS A COURSE REIGN.
DOESN'T MARRY THE PAR, PER
SE, AND THE PGA HAS SATURDAY
WAY OF DOING THIS.
IF THE PAR'S 712.
THE COURSE RATING MIGHT BE
70 OR 71 AT SOME COURSES SO
IN SIMPLE TERMS IF YOU SHOT
81 AND THE COURSE RATING WAS
71, YOU GET YOUR HANDICAP
CARD AND YOU PUT A 10 ON IT.
AND THEN YOU PLAY, YOU KNOW,
YOU PLAY FIVE GAMES, 10
GAMES, 20 GAMES.
BUT ONCE YOU GET TO 20 GAMES
IS THE REAL KEY.
YOU TAKE YOUR BEST TEN SCORE,
WHICH LET'S SAY YOU SHOT 81
TEN TIMES AND 91 TEN TIME,
81 LESS THE COURSE RATING IS
A TEN, YOU'D PUT IT ON YOUR
HANDICAP CARD ASK THEN YOU
ADD THAT UP AND THERE'S A
LITTLE CHART.
ANY PRO SHOP CAN GIVE YOU
THIS ADVICE, BUT I WOULD SAY
NOW YOU'RE AROUND A NINE OR
TEN HANDICAP.
SO IT'S PRETTY CLOSE TO HOW
MANY SHOTS YOU'RE
CONSISTENTLY OVER THE COURSE
RATING AND THAT'S A LITTLE
SIMPLE ANSWER.
IF I HAD IT TO SHOW YOU, I'D
GO INTO A LITTLE MORE DEPTH
BUT EVERY PRO SHOP CAN GIVE
YOU A HANDICAP CARD OR AT
LEAST SHOW YOU THE SYSTEM
THEY'RE USING, THEIR COURSE
RATING.
SO WHEN YOU PLAY KEEP EVERY
SCORECARD WHERE YOU PLAY AND
MAKE SURE IF IT'S NOT ON THE
SCORE CARD WRITE DOWN THE
COURSE RATING.
AND IF 71'S THE COURSE
RATING, AND YOU SHOOT 71
EVERY SECOND TIME YOU PLAY,
YOU'RE A SCRATCH GOLFER.
THAT MEANS YOU CARRY A ZERO
HANDICAP.

Maureen says AND SO THE LOWER
THE NUMBER THE BETTER.

Kevin says RIGHT.

Maureen says OKAY, FIRST TIME
I UNDERSTOOD THAT.
WHAT'S YOUR HANDICAP?

Kevin says I FLY
ABOUT A THREE I'D SAY, A TWO
OR THREE.

Maureen says OH, THAT'S GOOD.

Kevin says YEAH, IT'S
NOT BAD.
IT'S NOT A SCRATCH THOUGH.

Maureen says WHEN YOU'RE
GOLFING AND YOU'RE TERRIBLE,
HOW MANY -- HOW LONG BEFORE
YOU SHOULD JUST TAKE THE
MAXIMUM NUMBER OF STROKES ON
THAT HOLE?

Kevin says I THINK WE
SAY DOUBLE PAR.
LIKE ON A PAR THREE, IF
YOU'VE TAKEN SIX SHOTS --

Maureen says THAT'S ENOUGH?

Kevin says YEAH, OR
EVEN LIKE ON A PAR FOUR IF
YOU'VE HAD EIGHT SHOTS I
DON'T SAY PICK IT UP.
IF YOU'RE 40 YARDS FROM THE
GREEN, PICK UP THE BALL,
THREE IT ON THE GREEN
SOMEWHERE, BECAUSE YOU'RE
PLAYING WITH YOUR PARTNERS
AND AT LEAST HIT A COUPLE
PUTTS.
YOU MIGHT HIT A 20 FOOT PUTT
AND IT GOES IN, YOU'RE HAPPY
YOU SALVAGED THE HOLE.

Maureen says BUT ON YOUR SCAR
CARD YOU PUT DOUBLE THE PAR.

Kevin says DOUBLE PAR.

Maureen says OKAY.
WAYNE IS IN MISSISSAUGA.
HI WAYNE.

The Caller says HI MAUREEN.

Maureen says HI.

The Caller says HI KEVIN, I'M
ENJOYING YOUR TIPS SO FAR.
IT'S HELPED ME A LOT.

Kevin says THANKS
WAYNE.
THAT'S GREAT.

The Caller says I HAD A QUESTION.
I'M OVER 6 foot 4 AND I'VE BEEN
PLAYING WITH THE SAME SET OF
CLUBS FOR, YOU KNOW, 10 OR
15 YEARS.
I DON'T PLAY ALL THAT OFTEN.
I'M WONDERING WHAT YOUR
OPINION IS ON CUSTOM CLUBS
AND WHETHER IT'S APPROPRIATE
FOR SOMEBODY WHO'S REALLY
TALL?

Kevin says RIGHT.
YOU'RE 6 foot 4, I'M PROBABLY
ABOUT 6 foot 1 TO 6 foot 2, YOU KNOW
WHAT?
I THINK YOU NEED CUSTOM
CLUBS.
YOU MAY GET FITTED AND THEY
MIGHT SAY YOU KNOW WHAT?
BECAUSE YOU'VE GOT LONGER
ARMS, ET CETERA, HERE'S
STANDARD.
BUT I FEEL BECAUSE OF YOUR
HEIGHT YOU DEFINITELY WILL
USE CUSTOM-FITTED CLUBS.
WHAT'LL HAPPEN, 6 foot 4, YOU
MIGHT NEED IT AN INCH LONGER
AND WHAT HAPPENS IS WHEN
IT'S AN INCH LONGER IT
CHANGES THE LIE OF THE CLUB
AND I'LL JUST PICK IT THIS
OUT REAL QUICK.
THIS IS THE LOFT ON THE FACE
BUT THIS IS THE LIE, THE
ANGLE HERE.
SO WHAT'LL HAPPEN IS WHEN
YOU'RE TALLER, YOU'RE
BENDING OVER A LOT MORE, SO
NOW IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE IT
AT ADDRESS BUT WHEN YOU COME
IN AND HIT BALL, I'LL BET
THE TOE OR THE HEEL'S
GETTING INTO THE GROUND, SO
I BELIEVE IN CUSTOM FITTING
CLUBS A LOT, AND THE NICE
THING IS TEN YEARS AGO YOU
DIDN'T HEAR A LOT ABOUT IT
UNLESS YOU WERE A PGA TOUR
PLAYER.
NOW EVERYONE, PIN, COBRA,
TITUS, EVERYONE HAS CUSTOM
FITTED AND I WOULD
RECOMMEND -- FROM
MISSISSAUGA?

The Caller says YES.

Kevin says A LOT OF
THE GOLF COURSES AND EVEN,
YOU KNOW, THE LARGE GOLF
STORES, THEY ALL HAVE
FITTING SYSTEMS.

Maureen says OKAY.
WHAT CAN WAYNE EXPECT TO PAY
FOR THAT?

The Caller says YOU KNOW WHAT?
YOU CAN GET FITTED PRETTY
WELL ANY SET OF CLUBS.
IF HE WALKS IN AND LIKE
ASSET OF CLUBS THAT ARE 60 dollars
THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO GO IN
AND SAY I NEED TO GET FITTED,
I'M A LEEJ YOU ARELY GOLFER
BUT HERE ARE MY SPECS,
MEANING AN INCH LONGER AND
CHANGE THE DEGREE TWO OR
THREE DEGREES UPRIGHT AND
THAT CAN BE APPLIED TO ANY
SET OF CLUBS.

Maureen says AND YOU WOULD
RECOMMEND THIS FOR PEOPLE
OVER WHAT HEIGHT?
DO YOU HAVE THEM AT 6foot 2.

Kevin says I DO, YES AND IF YOU HAVE
THE TIME AND YOU LOVE THE
GAME, EVERYONE SHOULD BE
CUSTOM FIT.
I THINK IF YOU'RE REALLY
INTERESTED, THE STORE OR THE
GOLF PRO SHOULDN'T REALLY
CHARGE YOU FOR THE CUSTOM
FIT.
THEY MIGHT CHARGE YOU FOR
THEIR TIME, MAYBE 30 dollars FOR
CUSTOM FIT BUT IF YOU WERE
TO BUY THE SET OF CLUBS OFF
THEM I THINK THEY'D GIVE YOU
THAT MONEY BACK.

Maureen says SHOW US A PROPER GRIP.
HOW TO GRIP THE CLUB.

Kevin takes out another club and says SURE.
GREAT.
WHAT WE'VE GOT HERE, THERE'S
PRETTY WELL THREE DIFFERENT
TYPES OF GRIP.
I'M GOING TO TAKE THE
10-FINGER GRIP.
BECAUSE IN ESSENCE THAT'S
WHAT I USE.
I'M NOT SAYING IT'S RIGHT OR
WROVELT YOU CAN'T SEE THE
FACE IN THE SQUARE.
HERE'S THE TOP OF THE GRIP.
THERE'S A FATTY PART ON MY
LEFT HAND.
I'M DOING IT FOR RIGHT
HANDED GOLFERS.
THAT SHOULD LAY SORT OF ON
TOP OF THE CLUB SO YOU CAN
SEE THE BACK OF MY HAND IS
DIRECTLY AT THE TARGET.
IT'S VERY SQUARE.
IT'S NOT A STRONG GRIP, IT'S
NOT A WEAK GRIP.
IT'S SQUARE TO THE BACK.
NOW SEE THE THUMB, MY LEFT
THUMB IS PRETTY WELL DOWN
THE TARGET LINE, TO THE
HEAD.
NOW I JUST TAKE MY RIGHT
HAND, PUT IT IN THE FINGERS.
YOU WANT TO PUT IT IN THE
FINGERS.
YOU DON'T WANT TO PUT IT ON
THE FINGERTIPS.
YOU DON'T WANT TO PUT IT IN
YOUR PALM, YOU WANT TO JUST
PUT IT IN THE FINGERS AND
THE EASIEST THING IS TO WRAP
THE RIGHT THUMB OVER THE
LEFT THUMB AND THEY'RE
PRETTY STRAIGHT.
NOW THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS
THIS IS SORT OF A 10-FINGER
GRIP WHERE I'M NOT
AIRLOCKING.
THIS IS AN INTERLOCKING GRIP
AND THIS IS AN OVERLAP GRIP
AND BELIEVE ME, ALL THREE
ARE FINE.
IT'S WHATEVER YOU'RE
COMFORTABLE WITH.

Maureen says IS THAT THE GRIP
FOR DRIVING AND CHIPPING BUT
NOT PUTTING I SUPPOSE?

Kevin says YES, GOOD.
CHIPPING, DRIVING,
EVERYTHING.
I USE THE SAME GRIP FOR
EVERYTHING, EXCEPT FOR
PUTTING.

Maureen says OKAY, ALL RIGHT.
MAYBE SOMEBODY ELSE'LL ASK
ABOUT THE PUTTING GRIP.
KATHLEEN IS IN COLLINGWOOD.

The Caller says MORNING, LOVE THE
SHOW, ALWAYS WATCHING IT.

Maureen says THANK YOU.

The Caller says I'M AN AT-HOME,
SINGLE MOM WITH TWO BOYS.
ONE FIVE-YEAR-OLD WHO'S JUST
ABOUT TO PUT THE VOLUME ON
THE TV...

Maureen says OH, NO, TURN
THAT DOWN.

The Caller says AND I WANTED TO
GET MY FIVE-YEAR-OLD OUT.
MYSELF, I'VE ONLY EVER
GOLFED A COUPLE OF TIMES,
KIND OF CHARITY FUNCTION
THINGS.
WENT TO THE LOCAL SHOP AND
SAID, YOU KNOW, WHAT SHOULD
I DO?
GET HIM A DRIVER OR AN IRON,
A WOOD, WHAT?
TO GET HIM STARTED?
SEE IF HE LIKES IT, FIRST OF ALL.

Kevin says RIGHT.

The Caller says AND THEN PROCEED
FROM THERE.
MAYBE TO LESSONS IF --

Kevin says RIGHT.

Maureen says OKAY, IS FIVE A
GOOD AGE TO START?

Kevin says FIVE'S A
GREAT AGE TO START.
I REALLY FEEL THAT THE
YOUNGER YOU GET THEM IN --
AND YOU KNOW WHAT?
WHEN WE'RE FOUR OR FIVE, I'M
NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE
LESSONS SO MUCH.
MAYBE GOLF PROS WILL SAY I'M
TAKING MONEY OUT OF THEIR
POCKET BUT REALLY THEY HAVE
SUCH A NATURAL SWING.
WHAT I WOULD RECOMMEND IS AN
IRON.
IF YOU WANT TWO CLUBS, LIKE
A SEVEN IRON RIGHT OFF THE
BAT, ANYTHING LIKE A SIX TO
SEVEN TO EIGHT IRON BECAUSE
IT HAS SOME LOFT SO IT GETS
IN THE AIR.
THE YOUNG GIRLS AND GUYS
LOVE WATCHING THE BALL GO IN
THE AIR AND I LOVE IT, TOO
WHEN I SEE A LITTLE GUY
HITTING THE BALL IN THE AIR.
THE SECOND CLUB IS A 2 OR 3
OR FIVE WOOD.
SO THEY SEE YOU HEY, THE
GENTLEMEN ON TV WITH HAVE
WOODS AND NOW I HAVE WOODS.
I WOULD SAY IT'S AS SIMPLE
AS ASKING AN OLD LOST AND
FOUND CLUB TO CUT IT DOWN,
HAVE THEM RE-GRIP IT.
IT'S VERY INEXPENSIVE THAT
WAY.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO OUT AND
BUY CUSTOM FIT CLUBS AS WE
TALKED ABOUT YOUR YOUR
FIVE-YEAR-OLD.
I SAY GET HIM OUT ON THE
RANGE, LET HIM HAVE FUN.
HE'LL START WITH A
CROSS-HANDED GRIP, THEN
HE'LL GRIP IT FUNNY, BUT YOU
KNOW WHAT?
THEY'RE SO TALENTED AT THAT
AGE, HE'LL HAVE FUN AND HIT IT.
I REALLY THINK GET HIM TO
THE DRIVING RANGE.
IF YOU WANT TO GET HIM ONE
CLUB, GET THE SEVEN IRON,
TWO OR THREE, YOU THEN GET A
WOOD AND A PUTTER.
I THINK FIVE'S GREAT AGE TO
START.

Maureen says WONDERFUL.
SO IT'S NOT THE -- WHAT DO
YOU CALL THIS PART HERE?

She points at the fat tip of the club.

Kevin says THE HEAD.

Maureen says THE HEAD DOESN'T
HAVE TO BE SMALLER FOR KID'S
CLUBBED.

Kevin says NO, THE
HEADS ARE ACTUALLY
CONVENTIONAL.
IT'S NEAT BECAUSE IN THE
LAST COUPLE YEARS, SAY FIVE
YEARS, THERE IS COMPANIES
OUT THERE THAT BUILD JUST
KIDS CLUBS NOW AND THEY'RE
SPECIFICALLY WEIGHT, THE
GRIPS ARE SMALLER, THE
LENGTHS ARE PERFECT, AND IT
REALLY IS KIND OF NICE THAT
THEY'RE TAKING ATTENTION TO
THE Jr. GOLFERS.

Maureen says YES.
BUT YOU'LL PAY FOR THAT.

Kevin says YOU'LL PAY
FOR THAT.
AND THAT'S WHY I SAID, FOR A
SINGLE MOTHER, I KNOW, AND
IT DOESN'T MATTER IF WE HAVE
LOTS OF MONEY OR NOT, I
THINK AN OLD CLUB, JUST CUT
IT DOWN, BECAUSE AT THAT AGE
THE SHAFT'S NOT REALLY
IMPORTANT, PUT A NEW GRIP ON
IT, A SMALLER GRIP FOR HIM
AND HE'LL REALLY ENJOY IT.

Maureen says SPEAKING ABOUT
MONEY, WHAT ABOUT THE FEES
TO GO GOLF IF YOU DON'T
BELONG TO A CLUB OR
WHATEVER?
ANY ADVICE FOR HOW WE CAN
SORT OF MAKE THIS A LESS
EXPENSIVE SPORT?

Kevin says SURE.
I THINK A NICE THING IS, IT
DEPENDS ON YOUR PLAY
ABILITY.
LIKE I'M SAYING ANGUS GLEN
OR OTHER COURSES ARE
EXPENSIVE THAT COULD BE
SOMEWHERE YOU SAVE UP AND
YOU PLAY ONCE A YEAR.

Maureen says ONCE A YEAR.

Kevin says RIGHT?
IF YOU'RE A GOOD LITTLE
GOLFER AND YOU WANT TO PLAY
OTHER COURSES THAT ARE 35
TO 45 dollars OR 60 OR 70 dollars, A LOT
OF PEOPLE PLAY THOSE ONCE A
WEEK AND THEY DON'T MIND.
YOU'RE OUT THERE FOR FOUR OR
FIVE HOURS' ENJOYMENT AND
35 TO 50 dollars ISN'T BAD.
THE MUNICIPAL COURSES ARE
REALLY GREAT.
IF YOU'RE JUST BEGINNING, A
NINE HOLE SHORT COURSE, PAR
THREE COURSE, VERY
INEXPENSIVE.
COULD BE 12 TO 15 dollars.
THE MUNICIPAL COURSES COULD
BE 30 TO 40 dollars.
YOU KNOW, 25 TO 35 dollars.
FOR AN 18 HOLE GOLF COURSE
IT'S VERY REASONABLE AND
THEY'RE GOOD GOLF COURSES,
GOOD TESTS OF GOLF.

Maureen says GOOD.
TERRY'S IN PICKERING.
HELLO, TERRE.

The Caller says HELLO, TERRY
JAMES, PICKERING.

Kevin says TERRY
JAMES, HELLO, SIR!
GREAT PLAYER, A TERRY.

The Caller says NICE TO SEE MY
OLD BUDDY'S NOW A TV STAR.
I HAVE QUESTION, I'M SITTING
HOME HERE DURING SOME WORK
ON A TOURNAMENT COMING UP
FOR THE DURHAM SENIOR GAME.
I HAVE QUESTION ON FAIRWAY
BUNKERS.
AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW A
FAIRWAY BUNKER IS PROBABLY
ABOUT 140, 150, SOMETIMES
200 YARDS TO THE GREEN.
I LIKE TO HIT WOODS OUT OF
THE FAIRWAY BUNKERS.
I THINK JACK NICKLAUS
RECOMMENDS THAT.
I'M ASKING A QUESTION AS TO
THE DISTANCE VERSUS THE
CLUB.
IF YOU NORMALLY HIT A FIVE
WOOD SAY 170, AND YOU'RE IN
THE BUNKER AND YOU'RE 170
FROM THE GREEN, SHOULD YOU
DROP DOWN TO A THREE WOOD SO
THAT YOU GET A LITTLE BIT OF,
A LITTLE BIT OF EXTRA POWER
COMING OUT OF THE SAND?

Kevin says RIGHT.
BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOURSELF
THAT IN THE SAND YOU CAN'T
REALLY TAKE AS HARD A SWING
AS YOU NORMALLY -- BECAUSE
THE SAND'S SHIFTING.
YOU KNOW, YOU WANT TO MAKE
SURE IN THE SAND THAT YOU
TAKE IT BACK NICE AND EASY
AND YOUR FEET ARE PLANTED SO
I WOULD SAY ADD TWO CLUBS.
SURE, GO TO THE THREE WOOD,
OR EVEN IF, LET'S SAY YOU'VE
GOT A SHOT THAT USUALLY
REQUIRES A SEVEN IRON.
I'D GO TO EVEN A FIVE IRON,
BECAUSE WHEN YOU'RE FEET ARE
PLANTED IN THE SAND, YOU
KNOW THAT YOU'RE REALLY NOT
FOLLOWING THROUGH THE WAY
THAT YOU SHOULD, BECAUSE
YOU'RE ALWAYS STOPPING HERE.
SO YOU'RE GOING TO HIT IT
ABOUT 20 YARDS LESS, SO ADD
TWO CLUBS AND THAT'S A GREAT
QUESTION.
AND I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING
YOU.
HE'S AN OLD BUDDY OF MINE.

The Caller says I'M PROUD OF YOU, PAL.
YOU TAKE CARE.

Maureen says OKAY, AND A
BUNKER IS SAND?

Kevin says SAND TRAP.
AND JUST TO GO FOR THAT
POINT, SOMETIMES YOU'RE IN A
FAIRWAY BUNKER, AND YOU'RE
LET'S SAY 150 YARDS FROM THE
GREEN.
BUT YOUR BALL'S UP AGAINST
THE LIP.

Maureen says OH, YEAH, I HATE THAT.

Kevin says YEAH,
YOU'VE GOT TO--YOU KNOW
WHAT?
JUST TAKE YOUR PITCHING
WEDGE ASK JUST GET IT OUT.
A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK WELL,
IF I MOVE MY SEVEN IRON AND
MOVE MY HANDS I MIGHT BE
ABLE TO LIFT IT OUT.
YOU CAN'T.
THE THING IS, IF THERE'S NO
LIP, HIT WHATEVER CLUB YOU
WANT.
WHEN THERE'S A LIP, TAKE
YOUR PITCHING OR SAND WEDGE,
JUST ADVANCE THE BALL.

Maureen says YOU'RE GOING TO
TAKE AN EXTRA STOKE BUT IN
THE LONG RUN --

Kevin says IT'S GOING
TO SAVE YOU SHOTS BECAUSE
NOW YOUR NEXT SHOT MIGHT BE
70 YARDS, BUT AT LEAST IT'S
NOT IN THE BUNKER STILL.

Maureen says A COUPLE OF
OTHER TERMS.
WHAT IS A “SUDDEN DEATH” IN GOLF?

Kevin says SUDDEN
DEATH IS A SUDDEN DEATH
PLAYOFF.
PLAYED, YOU KNOW, COULD BE
AN 18 HOLE MATCH AND WE'RE
ALL TIED OR COULD BE A 72
HOLE MATCH LIKE THE PGA TOUR
AND WE'RE ALL TIED.
SUDDEN DEATH MATCH MEANS WE
PLAY ONE HOLE AND THE WINNER
TAKES ALL.
IF WE TIE, WE GO TO THE NEXT
HOLE.
AND IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS ALL
THE TOURNAMENTS USED TO HAVE
18 HOLE PLAYOFFS.
SO THE SUNDAY WE TIED, WE
SHOW UP MONDAY, WE'VE GOT TO
PLAY 18 HOLES HEAD ON HEAD.
NOW BECAUSE OF TV AND THE
TOUGH SCHEDULES AT THE PGA
TOURS AND THE LPGA --

Maureen says THEY DO SUDDEN DEATH.

Kevin says SUDDEN DEATH.
THEY GO BACK TO A HOLE AND
THE FIRST PERSON TO BEAT
THEM ON ANY HOLE WINS.

Maureen says OKAY, AND WHAT'S
A GIMME.

Kevin says A GIMME IS
NOT TO BE USED IN
PROFESSIONAL TOURNAMENTS BUT
A GIMME IS WHERE'S CLOSE TO
THE HOLE, MAYBE THREE OR
FOUR INCHES AND IT'S A
GIMME.
I'LL GIVE IT TO YOU.

Maureen says BECAUSE NO ONE
WOULD MISS IT.

Kevin says WE'VE SEEN
PEOPLE MISS IT BUT WE'RE
GIVING IT TO YOU ANYWAYS.

Maureen says OKAY, ROGER IS
IN TORONTO.
HI ROGER.

The Caller says HI.

Maureen says HI.

The Caller says I HEARD YOUR
GUEST SAY THAT HE HITS A
SEVEN IRON, OR ANYBODY HITS
A SEVEN IRON 140 YARDS, THAT
MUST MEAN, OF COURSE, THEY
HIT THEIR DRIVER 250.

Kevin says RIGHT.

The Caller says I'M A SENIOR
GOLFER, I MEAN A REAL SENIOR
GOLFER AND I HAVE NICE
FLEXIBLE GRAPHITE SHAFTS AND
ALL THAT AND ON A GOOD DAY I
CAN HIT A DRIVER 195 YARDS
AND A SEVEN IRON ABOUT 110.

Kevin says EXACTLY.
YEAH, DEFINITELY.

The Caller says I'M WONDERING, IS
THERE SOMETHING I SHOULD BE
DOING TO GET MORE DISTANCE
OR WHAT?

Kevin says YOU KNOW WHAT?
IT DEPENDS.
NOT REALLY AS MUCH DISTANCE.
YOU'VE GOT THE FLEXIBLE
GRAPHITE SHAFTS AND YOU'VE
GOT THE LEADING TECHNOLOGY
THERE.
IF YOU'RE FLEXIBLE, YOU
MIGHT WANT TO DO SOME
STRETCHING.
THE AVERAGE PERSON, BELIEVE
ME, DOES NOT HIT A SEVEN
IRON 140.
THAT'S SORT OF MAYBE SOMEONE
WHO HITS THE DRIVER ALONG
AND HITS THEIR PITCHING
WEDGE 80 OR 90 YARDS.
IF YOU'RE HITTING YOUR SEVEN
IRON THAT DISTANCE, THAT'S A
GREAT DISTANCE.
TO GET A LITTLE MORE
DISTANCE YOU MIGHT WANT TO
DO SOME STRETCHING BEFORE
YOU TEE OFF.
PUT A CLUB ONTO YOUR
SHOULDERS AND DO SOME
STRETCHING, BECAUSE THE
FURTHER YOU COIL YOUR
SHOULDERS, A LITTLE FURTHER
IT'LL GO.
AND I WOULD NEVER SAY HIT
THE BALL HARDER, WHERE
YOU'RE GOING TO SAVE SHOTS
IS IN THE SHORT GAME.
IT'S CHIPPING AND PITCHING
AND PURTING.
AND IF YOU HIT YOUR DRIVER
190, THAT'S GREAT.
BELIEVE ME, I PLAY WITH MY
DAD AND HE'D LOVE TO HIT HIS
DRIVER 170.
SO 190'S A GOOD DISTANCE.

Maureen says IS THERE A CLUB
YOU FIND YOU NEVER USE IN A GAME?
IT JUST KIND OF SITS THERE?

Kevin says DEPENDS ON
THE GOLF COURSE.
THERE'S SOME GOLF COURSES
ARE THAT -- LET'S SAY ALL
THE PAR FOURS ARE WHERE YOU
HIT THE DRIVER OFF THE TEE
AND YOU'VE GOT SHORT IRONS
IN.
PAR THREE'S MIGHT BE 150
YARDS SO MAYBE A LOT OF
TIMES YOU DON'T USE YOUR
LONG IRONS.
LIKE THE THREE IRON AND THE
FOUR AND THE FIVE IRON.
DEPENDS ON THE GOLF COURSE.
AND THEN AGAIN, IF IT'S
MAYBE A LITTLE SHORTER
COURSE, YOU DON'T WANT TO
HIT THE DRIVER SO MUCH, SO
YOU'RE USING THE THREE IRON
AND THE FOUR AND THE FIVE
IRON A LOT AND YOU'RE NOT
HITTING YOUR WOODS SO MUCH.

Maureen says I SEE YOU HAVE
AN EIGHT IRON IN THERE.
I DON'T KNOW IF I'VE EVER
SEEN ONE BEFORE IS THAT VERY
COMMON?

Kevin says FOR A FULL
SET OF CLUB, YES.
BUT YOU'RE RIGHT BECAUSE A
LOT OF THE HALF SETS OR
RENTAL SETS ARE THREE, FIVE,
SEVEN, NINE IRONS.

Maureen says OKAY, BUT HE'S
GOT EIGHT IN THERE.
JUNE IS IN TORONTO.
HI JUNE?

The Caller says HI.

Maureen says HI.
GO AHEAD.
YOUR QUESTION FOR KEVIN?

The Caller says YEAH, I HAVE A
QUESTION FOR KEVIN.
HI KEVIN.

Kevin says HI HOW ARE
YOU?

The Caller says GOOD.
I HAVE A DRIVER THAT'S
GRAPHITE.

Kevin says RIGHT.

The Caller says AND I CAN HIT MY
THREE WOODS STRAIGHT NO
PROBLEM, BUT I'M ALWAYS
HAVING A PROBLEM ON MY
DRIVER IS IT POSSIBLE TO
SHORTEN THE DRIVER?

Kevin says YES IT IS,
AND DEPENDING ON WHAT DRIVER
YOU HAVE, YES IT IS.
IT ALSO COULD BE MAYBE THAT
THE SHAFT IN THE DRIVER'S
NOT RIGHT FOR YOU.
YEARS AGO WHEN YOU BOUGHT
11-PIECE SET, EVERY CLUB WAS
THE SAIP, THE DRIVER, THE
THREE WOOD, THE FIVE WOOD,
THE WEDGES, EVERYTHING.
SO YOU KNEW THE SHAFT WAS
RIGHT FOR YOU.
NOW WITH THE ADVENT OF THE
BIG DRIVERS AND STUFF, AND
EVEN SPECIALIZED SAND WEDGES,
YOU MIGHT IN YOUR BAG HAVE A
TOTALLY DIFFERENT SETS OF
CLUBS.
SO THE DRIVER, THE SHAFT
MIGHT BE WRONG FOR YOU.
YOU'RE RIGHT.
TAKE IT INTO YOUR LOCAL
REPAIR SHOP OR THE PRO SHOP
OR THE GOLF STORE AND THEY
CAN CUT IT DONE.
OR YOU MAY JUST WANT TO SAY
LOOK, THIS IS A PRETTY GOOD
DRIVER, WHY DON'T I TRADE IT
IN ON SOMETHING ELSE AND
ONCE AGAIN TEST THE DRIVER
BEFORE YOU BUY IT.
BUT WE CAN, BY TAKING THE
GRIP OFF, WE CAN CUT THE
SHAFT DOWN, BY CUTTING THE
SHAFT DOWN, MAKES IT A
LITTLE STIFFER.
BUT IF YOU'RE ONLY CUTTING
IT DOWN AN INCH OR TWO, IT'S
NOT GOING TO CHANGE IT THAT
MUCH BUT IT DOES MAKE THE
SHAFT A LITTLE STIFFER WHEN
YOU CUT IT DOWN.

Maureen says DO YOU SEE
PEOPLE PLAYING WITH CLUBS
THAT ARE EITHER TOO SHORT OR
TOO LONG FOR THEM SOMETIMES?
I MEAN, DOES IT HELP TO SORT
OF -- WHAT DO YOU CALL
THAT --

Kevin says GRIP DOWN?

Maureen says YEAH, GRIP DOWN
ON THE CLUB?
OR IS IT JUST TOO LONG FOR
YOU SOMETIMES?

Kevin says RIGHT, A
LOT OF TIMES WITH THOSE NEW
DRIVERS THEY'RE TOO LONG FOR
PEOPLE OR YOU SEE SOMEONE --
WE ALL GET HAND-ME-DOWN SETS.
I STARTED THERE, OF COURSE.
SO YOU GET A SET, THE SHAFT
MIGHT BE WRONG FOR, YOU
MEANING IT'S TOO WHIPPY OR
STIFF FOR YOU, THE GRIP
MIGHT BE TOO BIG, DEPENDING
ON THE SIZE OF YOUR HANDS.
THERE'S SO MANY LITTLE
THINGS.
IF THEY'RE HAND-ME-DOWNS
THEY'RE PROBABLY NOT RIGHT
FOR YOU BUT HEY, GREAT TO
GET STARTED WITH MSTZ OKAY,
DOUG IS NEXT AND WE'LL HAVE
TO MAKE IT QUICK.
HI DOUG.

The Caller says HI.
HOW ARE YOU?

Kevin says HOW ARE
'YA DUG DAUG?

The Caller says NOT BAD.
I HEARD YOU MENTION THE
STARTER SET IS THREE, FIVE,
SEVEN, NINE.
I HAVE GIRLFRIEND WHO'S
GETTING INTO THE SPORT AND
WONDERING MAYBE SHE SHOULD
START OFF WITH THAT SET OR
GO ON TO THE FULL SET.
DO YOU THINK SHE MISSES OUT
WITH THE SHORT SET?

Kevin says NO, I
THINK START WITH THE SHORT
SET.
THE THREE, FIVE, SEVEN, NINE
HAS EVERY SHOT SHE NEEDS.
WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN IS AS
SHE GETS A LITTLE BETTER,
YOU PICK UP THE SAND WEDGE
FOR HER.
AND A DEPENDING ON WHAT SET
YOU GET, AND THERE'S A LOT
OF SETS OUT THERE YOU CAN
ADD THE FOUR, SIX, EIGHT AND
PITCHING WEDGE LATER BUT I'
AGREE 10 percent WITH YOU.
FOR THE GAME OF GOLF, MAYBE
A DRIVER AND A THREE WOOD OR
MAYBE JUST A THREE WOOD.
THE THREE, FIVE, SEVEN, NINE
AND PUTTER.

Maureen says OKAY, AND A
COUPLE OF JUST -- IN THE
TIME WE HAVE LEFT, WHAT'S AN
EAGLE?

Kevin says AN EAGLE,
YOU KNOW PAR?
IF IT'S A PAR FIVE, IF IT'S
TWO UNDER PAR, LIKE YOU MAKE
IT THREE, WHICH IS A GREAT
SHOT, THAT'S AN EAGLE.
TWO UNDER PAR.

Maureen says AND A BIRDIE IS
ONE UNDER PAR?

Kevin says ONE UNDER PAR.

Maureen says AND THEN YOU'VE
GOT PAR AND A BOGEY IS ONE
OVER.

Kevin says BOGEY, RIGHT.

Maureen says AND THEN YOUR
BUBBLE BOGEYS, TRIPLE BOGEYS,
THAT SORT OF THING.

Kevin says ALBATROSSES.

Maureen says AND A DUB IS...?

Kevin says TWO
CONNOTATIONS.
YOU DUB YOUR TEE SHOT OR YOU
SAY I'M PLAYING WITH MY BEST
FRIEND, HE'S A DUB.

Maureen says HE'S NOT THAT
GREAT.
(LAUGHING)
WELL YOU WERE GREAT.
THANK YOU, KEVIN.

Kevin says ENJOYED
BEING HERE.

Maureen says KEVIN THISTLE,

ANGUS GLEN GOLF COURSE IN
MARKHAM, ON THE ONTARIO, IF
