Transcript: Show #8 | Nov 16, 1999

Maureen stands in a studio with windows and sofa chairs in the background. She is in her forties, has short, side-parted, curly blond-highlighted brown hair in a bob, and wears a black blazer with a red bandana.

She says WELCOME TO "YOUR
HEALTH."
I'M MAUREEN TAYLOR.

(music plays)
The opening sequence begins.

Clips of people of different ages flash on screen one by one against an animated blue sky background. First a baby boy, then a 10-year-old boy with short brown hair, a teenage girl with curly brown hair, a man in his thirties with middle-parted brown hair and glasses, and finally a woman in her sixties with long gray hair.

The title appears: "Your Health."

Clips from the episode flash on screen.

Maureen says THIS WEEK, CAN FIDO'S KISSES
MAKE YOU SICK?

A clip of a teenage girl with curly dark brown hair scratching and kissing a brown dog appears on screen.

Maureen continues YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT AND
WHAT YOU AVOID EATING.

A clip of Maureen interviewing Liz Pearson and Dr. Rob MYERS in the studio appears on screen.

Maureen continues DIET AND HEART HEALTH.

Liz Pearson says WE'VE BEEN SO BUSY TEEING
DON'T EAT THIS, DON'T EAT

Several prescription medicines appear on screen and Maureen says THAT, AND MAI DRAIN MEGS,
HOW TO GET YOUR HEADACHE TO
BACK OFF.

Standing in the studio, Maureen says YOU PROBABLY CONSIDER
YOUR DOG OR CAT YOUR BEST
FRIEND AND CONSTANT
COMPANION.
CUDDLED WITH YOU ON THE
COUCH, SLOPPY KISSES WHEN
YOU COME HOME.
YOU KEEP UP ON HIS SHOTS SO
YOU KNOW HE'S NOT GOING TO
GET SOME NASTY DISEASE,
THINK AGAIN.
IT'S NOT YOUR ANIMAL THAT'S
GOING TO GET SICK.
IT MIGHT BE YOU.
OUR PETS MOUTHS CLAWS AND
OTHER BODY PARTS ARE TEAMING
WITH BACTERIA.
AND SOMETHING AS INNOCENT AS
LICKING A CUT ON YOUR HAND,
STOOPING AND SCOOPING OR A
SMALL BITE COULD LEAD TO A
SERIOUS INFECTION.

Clips of house dogs and cats appear on screen and fade out to Kate and her 3-year-old son. Kate has shoulder-length, curly dark brown hair, and wears a turquoise shirt.

Kate holds her son, plays with their dog, and says NO PULLING, OUCH!
HURTS, DOING GIVE.

Maureen says KATE IS A MOTHER, A PET
OWNER AND A VETERINARIAN
WITH FIRST-HAND KNOWLEDGE OF
HOW SERIOUS A BITE CAN
BECOME.
SHE WAS BITTEN BY A
DISTRESSED AND FRIGHTENED
DOGED A HER CLINIC.

Kate sits in her living room and a caption reads "Dr. Kate Hall, Veterinarian."

Kate says I KNEW THAT MY BITE WAS
BAD BECAUSE IT WAS A PAINFUL
BITE AS OPPOSED TO JUST A
SURFACE SCRATCH AND IT
STARTED TO SWELL
VERY QUICKLY.
I HAD DIFFICULTY AND PAIN
WHEN I WAS TRYING TO BEND MY
FINGER SO I KNEW THE BITE
WAS SERIOUS.

Maureen says DR. HALL KNEW BETTER BUT
DIDN'T HAVE THE BITE LOOKED
LIKE RIGHT AWAY.

Kate says THERE WERE STILL
APPOINTMENTS TO BE DONE AND
SURGERIES TO BE DONE AND I
WAS THE ONE WHO DID THE
SURGERY, SO FOOLISHLY I WENT
AND DID A SURGERY AFTER THE
BITE WITH GLOVES ON OF
COURSE, AND EVERYTHING WENT
FINE FOR THE PET, BUT MY
FINGER WAS REALLY SORE AND
BY THE TIME I FINISHED THAT
AND DID THE TREATMENTS AND
FINISHED MY RECORDS, I
PHONED MY HUSBAND AND SAID,
I KNOW THIS IS BAD, IT'S
TIME TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL,
AND HE TOOK ME TO THE
EMERGENCY ROOM.

Maureen says SHE WAS GIVEN ANTIBIOTICS
BUT DR. HALL KNOWS HOW CLOSE
SHE CAME TO SERIOUS
COMPLICATIONS.
EVEN A SMALL BITE OR SCRATCH
SHOULDN'T BE DISMISSED.

Now Paul Arnold appears on screen holding a person’s hand in the hospital. He is in his fifties, has balding, short dark gray hair, is clean-shaven, and wears a pin-striped white shirt.

Dr. Paul Arnold says ANY PAIN WHEN I PRESS UP
HERE.

Maureen says DR. PAUL ARNOLD IS AN
EMERGENCY CARE PHYSICIAN WHO
TREATS BITES BY PET.

A caption reads "Dr. Paul Arnold, Toronto Western Hospital" and Dr. Arnold says THE FIRST THING YOU
SHOULD REALIZE IS SOME OF
THE CONCERNS YOU SHOULD HAVE
ARE NOT BASE ODD WHAN YOU
SEE AND IF YOU'RE WAITING
UNTIL YOU SEE A PROBLEM
YOU'VE PROBABLY WAITED A BIT
TOO LONG.

Maureen says HE SAYS THE FIRST STEP
AFTER A BITE OR SCRATCH IS
TO THOROUGHLY WASH THE WOUND
AND APPLY AN ANTISEPTIC
CLEANSER AND WATCH FOR SIGNS
OF INFECTION.

Dr. Arnold says ANYBODY WHOSE INJURY IS
GETTING MORE PAINFUL AS THE
DAYS GO BY, THEY'RE
EXPERIENCING ANY INCREASED
IN REDNESS AND SWELLING AT
THE SITE OF THE INJURY, IF
THEY SEE PUSS COME OUT OF
THE WOUND, A THICK YELLOW
DISCHARGE RATHER THAN A
CLEAR FLUID WHICH IS NORMAL
TISSUE FLUID THAT ANYONE
WOULD HAVE COMING OUT OF ANY
SCRAPE OR INJURY.
I THINK WE SHOULD PROBABLY
MAKE SURE, OTHER THING TO
WATCH FOR IF YOU'RE STARTING
TO FEEL ILL, FEVER, CHILLS,
IF YOU FEEL LOSS OF APPETITE,
IF YOU'RE STARTING TO FEEL
WEAK AND STIRD AND AT THE
SAME TIME YOUR INJURY IS
GETTING MORE AS MANY ATTIC
THESE ARE INDICATORS THAT
YOU MAY BE GETTING AN
INFECTION.

Maureen says IN A STUDY PUBLISHED THIS
YEAR, RESEARCHERS FOUND THAT
18 percent OF DOG BITES TREATED IN
EMERGENCY ROOMS WERE
INFECTED COMPARED TO 80 percent OF
CAT BITES.

Dr. Arnold says IN GENERAL A CAT BITE IS
ABOUT TEN TIMES MORE LIKELY
TO BE INFECTED THAN A DOG
BITE AND THIS HAS TO DO WITH
THE FACT THAT CATS HAVE
CERTAIN GERMS IN THEIR MOUTH
MORE COMMONLY THAN DOGS DO
AND ALSO PART TO THE DUE
THAT DADS HAVE LONG THIN
TEETH THAT CAUSES DEEP
INJECTION INTO THE TISSUE
WHEN THEY BITE YOU.
DOG BITES ARE MORE LIKELY TO
CAUSE TEARING OF THE SKIN
AND NOT ALWAYS AS DEEP.
AND ALSO BECAUSE THE WOUNDS
ARE MORE OPEN BECAUSE OF THE
TEAR, IT'S EASIER FOR THE
WOUND TO DRAIN AND TO YOUR
BODY TO CLEAN UP AFTER.
IT'S COMMON TO GIVE
ANTIBIOTICS TO PEOPLE WHO
GET CAT AND DOG BILTS.
I WOULD SAY MOST BITES GET
TREATED WITH ANTIBIOTICS, IF
HEY LOOK THERE'S A DEEP
PUNCTURE OF THE SKIN.

Maureen says WALT IS A VETERINARIAN,
ILLNESS TRANSMITTED FROM
PETS TO PEOPLE.

Now Walt Ingwersen appears on screen examining the eyes of a golden retriever. He is in his forties, has short, side-parted dark brown hair, and wears a white lab coat.

Walt says I GUESS THE RULE OF THUMB
WE ALWAYS USE IS THAT IF IT
TRULY PENETRATES RIGHT ANY
INJURY, A SCRATCH, OR A BITE
WOUND, IF IT PENETRATES
RIGHT THROUGH THE SKIN, THEN
IT'S PROBABLY A REASONABLE
TO GIVE SOME THOUGHT TO
SEEING YOU PHYSICIAN.

A caption reads "Dr. Walt Ingwersen, Veterinarian."

Walt continues IF THERE IS A HISTORY OF
INDIVIDUALS THAT HAVE
CHRONIC ILLNESSES, DIABETES,
CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE,
ALCOHOLISM, CIRRHOSIS OF THE
LIVER.
OR INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE
HAVING CURRENTLY ARE
UNDERGOING CANCER
CHEMOTHERAPY, ALL OF THOSE
SITUATIONS IN PEOPLE WE KNOW
INTERFERES WITH THE ABILITY
WITH THE IMMUNE SYSTEM TO
FUNCTION PROPERLY.
AND SO ANY TYPE OF INJURY
THAT POTENTIALLY COULD
INTRODUCE AN INFECTION,
SHOULD BE FELT WITH
AGGRESSIVELY RIGHT FROM THE
START.
AND THAT MEANS CALLING YOUR
FAMILY PHYSICIAN.

Clips of cats appear on screen.

Maureen says YOUR PET DOESN'T HAVE TO
BITE YOU TO INFECT YOU.
OUR PETS CARRY A CORN COPEIA
OF BACTERIA IN THEIR MOUTHS
AND UNDER THEIR CLAWS.
CATS CLAWS CAN EFFECTIVELY
INJECT OUR BODIES WITH
EVERYTHING FROM SALIVA TO
FECAL MATTER AND WITH IT A
GARDEN VARIETY OF GERMS.

Walt says WHEN THEY DO SCRATCH US,
WHEN IT PENETRATES THE SKIN
IT CAN DEPOSIT BACTERIA.
AND IF WE LOOK AT IT, IT'S
SPECIALLY FOR ANIMALS THAT
DO SPEND THEIR TIME OUTDOORS,
THOSE FEET, CLAWS HAVE BEEN
THROUGH A FAIR BIT OF
DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS OVER
THE COURSE OF THEIR TRAVELS
THAT DAY.
THEY COULD HAVE PICKED UP A
NUMBER OF THINGS AND THOSE
THINGS COULD BE DEPOSITED ON
OR UNDER OUR SKIN.

Maureen says AN INNOCENT SCRATCH CAN
LEAD TO CAT SCRATCH FEVER.
SAYS THIS CONDITION IS NOT
USUALLY A PROBLEM IN HEALTHY
PEOPLE, BUT CAN BE FATAL IN
THOSE WITH A WEAKENED
IMMUNED SYSTEM.
THERE ARE SIGNS EVERYONE
SHOULD WATCH FOR.

Walt says THIS ORGAN CAN GET A FOOT
HOLD AND IF IT DOES IT DOES
CREATE A FAIRLY
CHARACTERISTIC LEGION AT ITS
SPOT OF ENTRY, AND USUALLY
IT WILL ALSO HAVE FLU LIKE
SYMPTOM WITS.
MALAISE, JUST BEING
LETHARGIC.
PERHAPS A LITTLE BIT OF
FEVER AND OFTEN
CHARACTERISTICLY THE LOCAL
OR DRAINING LYMPH NODE.
FOR INSTANCE IF THERE WAS A
SCRATCH ON THE HAND, THE
LYMPH NODE IN THE ARMPIT
AREA WILL BECOME ENLARGED AS
THE IMMUNE SYSTEM KICKS IN
AND TRYS TO HANDLE OR DEAL
WITH THE BACTERIAL
INFECTION.

Maureen says ANOTHER COMMON PROBLEM
PETS TRANSMIT TO PEOPLE ARE
PARASITES.
YOUNG CHILDREN AND ADULTS
WHO GARDEN ARE MOST AT RISK.

Dr. Arnold says NO I THINK WITH DOGS AND
CATS, A MAJOR CONCERN WITH
FECAL MATERIAL IS THE
TRANSMISSION OF PARAIS ITIC
INFECTIONS RATHER THAN
BACTERIAL INFECTIONS.
DOGS AND CATS ARE BOTH PRONE
TO HAVE PARASITES IN THEIR
DIGESTIVE TRACT AND THEY CAN
EXCRETE ONE FORM OR ANOTHER
OF THESE PARASITES IN THEIR
STOOL.
VERY COMMON FOR CHILDREN WHO
PLAY IN SANDBOXS TO PICK UP
CERTAIN KINDS OF WORMS FROM
DOG FECES.

Maureen says SURE THERE ARE POTENTIAL
RISKS TO OWNING A PET, BUT
THEY DON'T OUTWEIGH THE
BENEFITS.
STUDIES SHOW PET S ARE GOOD
FOR YOUR HEAR.
THEY LOW YOU ARE YOUR BLOOD
PRESSURE, AND BESIDES, THEY
LOVE YOU.
NO MATTER WHAT.

Back in the studio, Maureen says AND BEFORE WE START FEELING
BACTERIALY SUPERIOR TO
ANIMALS, WE SHOULD NOTE THAT
THE TYPICAL HUMAN MOUTH
CONTAINS MORE THAN 40
DIFFERENT SPECIES OF
BACTERIA AND VIRUSES.
FIGURES SAY HUMAN BITES CAN
BE EVEN MORE DANGEROUS THAN
ANIMAL BITES AND ARE MORE
LIKELY TO BECOME ININFECTED.
LOTS MORE TO COME BUT FIRST
THIS WEEK'S QUIZ.

On screen a title reads "Your Health Quiz."

Maureen reads the question on screen and says YOUR HOME FROM WORK WITH
RHINITIS.
DO YOU HAVE
1, A SORE NOSE,
2, A COLD IN YOUR NOSE,
OR, 3, A BROKEN NOSE.
THE ANSWER LATER ON YOUR
HEALTH.

Back in the studio, Maureen sits at a desk with two guests and says ONE OF THE THINGS WE'RE
TRYING TO DO HERE IS LOOK AT
DIET AND HOW IT RELATES TO
OUR HELL.
SO WE'VE ALREADY LOOKED AT
THE FOODS THAT CAN HELP
PREVENT CANCER.
TODAY WE WANT TO TACK THE
NUMBER ONE KILLER OF
CANADIAN MEN AND WOMEN,
HEART DISEASE.
MOST OF US KNOW THAT THINGS
LIKE FAT AND CHOLESTEROL ARE
BAD FOR THE HEART, BUT IS IT
JUST A MATTER OF SWITCHING
FROM BUTTER TO MARGARINE?
HERE TO HELP US SORT THROUGH
THE RESEARCH ARE DR. ROB
MYERS AND REGISTERED
DIETICIAN LIZ PEARSON.
OF THE THINGS WE CAN CONTROL,
HOW IMPORTANT IS DIET IN
PREVENTION OF HEART DISEASE.

Dr. Rob Myers appears on screen with a caption that reads "Dr. Rob Myers, Cardiologist." He is in his forties, has short, feathery dark brown hair, is clean-shaven, and wears thin glasses, and a beige suit, a blue shirt, and a patterned dark tie.

Dr. Myers says IT'S VERY IMPORTANT.
AND THE REASON IS THERE'S
ONLY SO MANY THINGS WE CAN
DO.
WE CAN STOP SMOKING.
WE CAN EXERCISE AND WE CAN
CONTROL WHAT WE PUT IN OUR
MOUTH TO REDUCE OUR RISKS.
VERY IMPORTANT.

Maureen says I KNOW THAT CHOLESTEROL
IS SUPPOSED TO BE BAD FOR ME
BUT I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S
BECAUSE FOODS CONTAIN
CHOLESTEROL, OR THEY
CONTAINS THINGS THAT BLOOS
MY CHOLESTEROL.

Now Liz Pearson appears on screen with a caption that reads "Liz Pearson, Registered Dietician." Liz is in her forties, has short, feathery, dark blond hair, and wears a blue blazer over a green turtleneck.

Liz says CERTAINLY THE CHOLESTEROL
IN FOOD WE HAVE TO LOOK AT.
IT IS KERNGS BUT WE HAVE TO
KEEP IN MIND THE KEY THINGS
THAT CAUSE THE CHOLESTEROL
IN YOUR BLOOD TO INCREASE
WHICH IS THE KEY PROBLEM,
ARE THE SATURATED FATS LIKE
FOUND IN FATTY MILKS LIKE 1 percent
OR 2 percent OR A FATTY MEATS OR
THE SO THOSE ARE THE ONES WE
WANT TO AVOID IN TERMS OF
CAUSING THE CHOLESTEROL IN
OUR BLOOD TO INCREASE.

Maureen says WHAT'S THE
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OUR
CHOLESTEROL AND HEART
DISEASE?

Dr. Myers says CHOLESTEROL FROM A LOT OF
STUDIES THAT DATE BACK 10 TO
20 YEARS HAVE SHOWN IN
STUDIES THAT PEOPLE IN A
POPULATION THAT HAVE HIGHER
LEVELS OF CHOLESTEROL ARE
ARE MOREICALLY TO DIE OF
HEART DISEASE AN HEART
ATTACKS.
LOOKED AT IN INTERESTING
WAYS.
A STUDY CALLED THE SEVEN
COUNTRIES STUDY THAT SHOWED
JAPAN THAT HAD A VERY LOW
INSTANCE OF HEART DISEASE
HAD LOW LEVELS OF
CHOLESTEROL, WHERE AREAS
LIKE FINLAND IN PARTICULAR
AND OTHER EUROPEAN COUNTRIES
THAT HAD REALLY HIGH RATES
OF HEART DISEASED THAT
HIGHEST LEVELS OF
CHOLESTEROL.

Maureen says YOU'VE EXPLAINED
WE SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR
GOODS THAT HAVE NONHIGH DROJ
NATED FATS, RIGHT?
AND I THINK OF MARGARINES
FOR EXAMPLE.
WHAT SHOULD WE BE LOOKING
FOR IN A MARGARINE.

Liz says WHEN YOU'RE LOOKING AT A
MARGARINE YOU GO WITH THE
SOFT TUB MARGARINE AS
OPPOSED TO THE HARD STICK
MARGARINE BECAUSE THOSE ARE
MUCH MORE SATURATED.
YOU CAN TAKE IT ONE STEP
FURTHER AND GO FOR THOSE
MARGARINES THAT ARE SO THIS
WOULD HAVE THE HEART
HEALTHIEST PROFILE, FOR
EXAMPLE PRESIDENT'S CHOICE,
SEVEN REASONS WOULD BE
ANOTHER ONE.
EVEN MORE INTERESTING
THERE'S VERY NEW MARGARINES
THAT HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED IN
FINLAND AS WELL AS THE U.S.
AND CURRENTLY UNDER REVIEW
IN CANADA AND THEY CONTAIN
PLANT THAT ACTUALLY LOWER
BLOOD CHOLESTEROLS
SIGNIFICANTLY.
LIKE TAKE CONTROL AND WE
WILL SEE THEM PROBABLY IN
CANADA WITHIN THE NEXT YEAR.

Maureen says IS THAT GOOD
NEWS, FOODS THAT CAN LOWER
OUR BLOOD CHOLESTEROL.

Dr. Myers says WELL IT'S GOOD, I DON'T
HAVE ANY PROPS SO I CAN'T
SHOW YOU THE... THE THING
ABOUT THOSE MARGARINES THAT
I'M AWARE OF IS YOU HAVE TO
HAVE THEM THREE TIMES A DAY,
FOR YOUR ENTIRE LIFE IF IT'S
GOING TO HAVE ANY EFFECT ON
REDUCING YOUR CHOLESTEROL
TO.
TAKE THEM LIKE A DRUG IS
PROBABLY THE WRONG THING TO
DO.
THE OTHER THING WE EMPHASIZE
MARGARINE A LOT BECAUSE IT'S
A GOOD EXAMPLE OF WHAT THIS
IS ALL ABOUT.
WE LOOK AT THE SIDES OF
PACKAGES AND SEE VEGETABLE
OIL, THAT'S GOT TO BE GOOD
FOR ME.
THE WHOLE HIGH DROJ NATION
THING IS A PROCESS THAT
CHANGES THAT FAT INTO
SOMETHING THAT CAN BECOME
MORE SHELF FRIENDLY THAT'S
WHY THE SOFTER MARGARINES
ARE THE ONES THAT ARE LESS
LIKELY TO HAVE THE HIGH DROJ
NATED FAT IN THEM.
CRACKERS AND COOKIES HAVE
HIGH DROJ NATED OILS IN THEM
SO THEY CAN STAY ON THE
SHELF LONGER AND THAT MAKES
THEM EXTREMELY UNHEALTHY.

Liz says AND REALLY
ALMOST EVERY PROCESSED FOOD
OUT THERE IS HYDROGENATED,
AS LONG AS YOU GO TO THE
LOWER FAT BRANDS.

Maureen says YOU MENTIONED LOW FAT
LABELS ARE CONFUSING FOR
CONSUMERS.
AREN'T YOU CYNICAL OF THINGS
THAT ARE LABELED LOW IN
CHOLESTEROL?

Dr. Myers says THERE ARE SPECIFIC RULES.
I THINK FDA IN THE UNITED
STATES, THEY HAVE RULES YOU
CAN'T MAKE A CLAIM ABOUT THE
NUTRITIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF A
PRODUCT UNLESS YOU LIST
EVERYTHING IN THAT PRODUCT.
IN CANADA AS I THINK LIZ
WILL AGREE, I THINK I'M
CORRECT ON THIS, FATTY ACIDS
CONTINUE DON'T HAVE TO BE
LISTED.
ANOTHER TYPE OF FAT, VERY,
VERY BAD FOR YOU IN TERMS OF
RAISING YOUR BLOOD
CHOLESTEROL BECAUSE THERE'S
BLOOD CHOLESTEROL AND THEN
THERE'S FOOD CHOLESTEROL.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO EAT FOOD
CHOLESTEROL TO RAISE YOUR
BLOOD CHRES ROMT...
CHOLESTEROL.

Maureen says AND TRANSFATS ARE BAD.
SO AVOID THE PROCESSED FOODS,
I GUESS YOU WOULD WANT TO
EAT A LOT OF NATURAL TYPE
FOODS FRUITS AND VEGETABLE.

Liz says IT'S FASCINATING BECAUSE
I THINK THE MOST RECENT
RESEARCH RELATED TO HEART
DISEASE SHOWS JUST AS
IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU
SHOULDN'T EAT IS WHAT YOU
SHOULD EAT.
AND THE FOCUS I THINK IS
REALLY CHANGING BECAUSE
WE'VE BEEN SO BUSY TELLING
PEOPLE DON'T EAT THIS FAT,
DON'T EAT THAT FAT AND NOW I
THINK WE'RE REALLY LOOKING
AT YOU KNOW WHAT, IF YOU EAT
WHOLE GRAINS, FRUITS,
VEGETABLES, BEANS, ALL THESE
OTHER THINGS IT'S JUST AS
IMPORTANT AND REALLY KEY TO
HELPING REDUCE THE RISK OF
HEART DISEASE.

Maureen says LET'S TALK ABOUT SOME OF
THOSE THEN, FIBER, I GUESS
WHOLE GRAINS, HOW IMPORTANT
IS FIBER?
PREVENTING HEART DISEASE.

Dr. Myers says DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU'RE
EXPECTING FROM YOUR SOCIAL
LIFE.
IN TERMS OF THE IMPORTANCE,
IT'S EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.
I ALSO CANNOT OVEREMPHASIZE,
HARD TO BE PASSIONATE ABOUT
FIBER.
BUT FIBER WILL FUNCTION IN A
LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS.
THERE'S TWO WAYS THAT ARE
REALLY IMPORTANT.
FIRST TAKE THE PLACE OF
OTHER FOODS.
IF YOU'RE EACH EATING FINE
TORE FILL UP YOUR STOMACH,
LIKELY TO EAT OR I DON'T
COOK KISS.
ACTS LIKE A BOWEL BOUNCER.
PASSES RIGHT THROUGH YOUR
SYSTEM.
THERE ARE BACTERIA IN YOUR
BOWELS AND ALL OF OUR
INTESTINES THAT ACT ON THAT
FIBER TO PRODUCE GAS.
THAT'S WHY YOU HAVE SIDE
EFFECTS.
WHAT THE FIBER CAN DO IS
ACTUALLY BIND SOME OF THOSE
EVIL CHOLESTEROL MOLECULES
SO YOU DON'T ABSORB THEM.
INCLUDING CONTROL OF
DIABETES FOR EXAMPLE.

Maureen says WHAT ARE WEIGHING WE
COULD BOOST THE FINENER OUR
DIET.

Liz says LOTS OF WAYS MORE BEANS
PLEASE.
I'M ALWAYS A PUSHING MY
BEANS BUT THEY'RE AN
EXCELLENT SOURCE OF FIBER.
PSYLLIUM WHICH IS FOUND IN
BRAN SERIAL A VERY POTENT
SOURCE OF FIBER AND GETTING
A LOT OF EXCITEMENT OVER
WHAT IT MAY DO IN TERMS OF
REDUCING THE RISK OF HEART
DISEASE AS WELL AS POSSIBLY
CANCER AND FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES OF COURSE OF.
YOU KNOW, A RECENT STUDY
FOUND THAT FIVE SERVINGS OF
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES A DAY
INCREASED THE STROKE RISK BY
ABOUT 15 percent.

Maureen says IT'S NOT A FOOD BUT WE
SHOULD TALK ABOUT VITAMIN E,
AT ONE TIME WE THOUGHT IT
WAS A REAL WAY TO PREVENT,
LATEST STUDY SAYS MAYBE NOT.
I'D LIKE BOTH YOUR OPINIONS.

Dr. Myers says WELL VITAMIN ENKS IS
SOMETHING THAT I HAD HOPED
WOULD BE A PANACEA TO SOME
EXTENT BECAUSE IT'S NATURAL
AND DOESN'T TEND TO CAUSE
SIDE EFFECTS BUT THAT'S A
RECENT STUDY OUT, THE HOPE
TRIAL OUT OF HAMILTON AND AS
PART OF THE STUDY THEY TOOK
PEOPLE WITH HEART DISEASE,
THOUSANDS OF THEM, THERE WAS
10,000 PEOPLE IN THIS STUDY,
PAT OF THAT POPULATION HAD
VITAMIN E AND PART OF THE
POPULATION HAD A PLACEBO
TABLET THAT LOOKED LIKE
VITAMIN E, THE PATIENT
DIDN'T KNOW, THE DR. DIDN'T
KNOW, ONLY THE CENTRAL
OFFICE NEW.
THEY FOLLOWED THE TWO GROUPS
AND FOUND THERE WAS
UNFORTUNATELY NO DIFFERENCE
AT ALL.
SO PEOPLE THAT TOOK VITAMIN
E HAD THE SAME RATE OF HEART
DISEASE AS PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T
TAKE VITAMIN E.

Maureen says ARE YOU DISMISSING IT YET
LIZ.

Liz says I DON'T TAKE VITAMIN E.
I DON'T RECOMMEND PEOPLE
TAKE HAVE IT MINUTE E.
CERTAINLY OTHER STUDIES HAVE
SHOWN BENEFITS FOR VITAMIN E
AND HELPING TO REDUCE THE
RISK OF HEART DISEASE AT 100
TO 400 INTERNATIONAL UNITS
IN TERMS OF AMOUNTS.
I THINK THAT WE NEED TO
CONTINUE TO LOOK AT IT
CLOSER AND THIS FALL AN
EXPERT FRANL THE U.S. AND
CANADA WILL BE REVIEWING THE
RECOMMENDED INDAYS FOR
VITAMIN E AND WE WILL HAVE A
NEW RECOMMENDED INTAKE AND
WILL BE VERY INTERESTING TO
SEE WHAT THE GENERAL CON
CENSUS IS IN TERMS OF
WHETHER WE NEED TO INCREASE
THE CURRENT RECOMMENDED
INTATION.

Maureen says LAST QUESTION TO BOTH OF
YOU, IF PEOPLE WERE TO
CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT THEIR
DIETS IN ORDER TO HELP THEIR
HEARTS WHAT WILL THEY DO.

Dr. Myers says ONLY ONE THING?
.

Maureen says ONE THING.

Dr. Myers says WE TALKED ABOUT FIBER I
DON'T EMPHASIZE THAT
FURTHER.
I WOULD SAY THAT IF YOU'RE
GOING TO HAVE FAT IN YOUR
DIET MAKE SURE IT'S GOOD
OILS AND FISH AS A SOURCE OF
FAT WITHOUT THE SAUCE AND
REPLACE YOUR SATURATED FATS
AND CHOLESTEROL WITH THAT
TYPE OF FOOD.

Maureen says AND LIZ, YOUR TIP.

Liz says I WOULD SAY THE MORE
PLANT-BASED THE DIET THE
BETTER SO WHOLE GRAINS,
FRUITS, VEGETABLES ARE THE
BEST WAY TO GO.

Maureen says GREAT.
HERE'S TO A HEALTHY HEART.
THANK YOU BOTH.

Dr. Myers says THANK YOU.

Maureen says DR. ROB MYERS AUTHOR OF
"TAKE IT TO HEART."

Dr. Myers’s book appears on screen featuring a picture of him with a lab coat on the front and the title.

Maureen continues AND LIZ PEARSON'S BOOK
ENTITLED "WHEN IN DOUBT, EAT
BROCCOLI."

Now Liz’s book appears on screen featuring a picture of her holding several stalks of broccoli.

Maureen continues COMING UP THE LATEST
TREATMENTS FOR MIGRAINE
HEADACHES.

Back in the studio, Maureen says BUT FIRST, SHOULD DOCTORS
HELP PEOPLE COMMITMENT
SUICIDE?
SHOULD IT BE LEGAL FOR
TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS TO
CHOOSE WHEN TO DIE?
CYNTHIA ST. JOHN SAYS YES.
THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF
DYING WITH DIGNITY.
A GROUP THAT WANTS
PHYSICIAN-ASSISTED SUICIDE
OUT OF THE SHADOWS AND INTO
THE LAW BOOKS.
HERE'S HER SECOND OPINION.

Cynthia St. John stands in the studio with a blue screen in the background that reads "Second Opinion." She has dark brown hair pulled into a ponytail, and wears a black velvet shirt.

Cynthia says PHYSICIAN-ASSISTED SUICIDE
IS HAPPENING EVERY DAY IN
THIS COUNTRY.
IT'S CURRENTLY HAPPENING IN
CLOSET AND WITHOUT
GUIDELINES IN PLACE TO
ENSURE THAT IT'S MONEY TERD
AND PRACTICED SAFELY.
AND CORRECTLY.
A BAD DEATH IS DYING
WITHOUT DIGNITY.
THE INDIVIDUAL'S DEFINITION
OF NOT HAVING DIGNITY AT THE
END OF LIFE.
A BAD DEATH CAN INCLUDE A
NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE LOVED
ONES, FAMILY MEMBERS,
FRIENDS, A CLERGY AROUND AN
INDIVIDUAL WHEN THEY'RE
DYING.
ANOTHER BAD DEATH COULD BE A
BOTCHED ASSISTED DEATH.
OR A BOTCHED ASSISTED
SUICIDE WHERE IN FACT THE
MEDICATION HAS BEEN INGESTED
AND THE IN FACT DIDN'T WORK
AND LEFT THE INDIVIDUAL IN A
WORSE STATE THAN WHEN THEY
BEGAN.
DYING WITH DIGNITY WOULD
LIKE TO SEE REGULATIONS IN
TERMS OF LEGALIZING
PHYSICIAN-ASSIST AED SUICIDE
THAT INCLUDE A NUMBER OFS.
FIRST OF ALL THE INDIVIDUAL
SEEKING A
PHYSICIAN-ASSISTED DEATH
MUST REPEATEDLY REQUEST THIS
IS HOW THEY WANT TO DIE.

A caption reads "Cynthia St. John, Dying with Dignity."

Cynthia continues THIS CAN'T BE A FLEETING
MOMENT OF CHOICE THAT TODAY
I WANT TO AN ASSISTED DEATH
BECAUSE MY PAIN IS
UNMANAGEABLE.
IT MUST BE THE PRESCRIPTION
CANNOT BE OFFERED UNTIL AT
LEAST 15 DAYS AFTER THE
INITIAL REQUEST.
THE PERSON HAS TO BE
TERMINALLY ILL IN OUR
OPINION.
ALSO INCLUDE THAT ANOTHER
PHYSICIAN CONFIRM THAT
INDIVIDUAL IS TERMINALLY ILL
SO THERE ARE NO MACE TAKES
MADE IN TERMS OF THE DYING
NO SAYS.
THE INDIVIDUAL MUST BE
COMPETENT.
THEY MUST BE AN ADULT AND
THAN THE GUIDELINES WOULD
ALSO INCLUDE THE PHYSICIAN
BEING PRESENT.
THAT PHYSICIANS HAVE A
CHOICE WHETHER IN FACT THEY
BE INVOLVED IN THE SITUATION
FROM THE BEGINNING BECAUSE
THERE ARE SOME PHYSICIANS NO
DOUBT ABOUT IT, THAT DON'T
WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS
KIND OF THING.
AND IMPORTANT THAT THE
PHYSICIANS HAVE A CHOICE AND
THE GUIDELINES WOULD INCLUDE
THAT.
IT WOULD ALSO INCLUDE THE
JUSTICE MINISTER BEING
INVOLVED BY REVIEWING EACH
CASE, PARLIAMENT REVIEWING
EACH CASE ON A QUARTERLY
BASIS AND THEN A COUNCIL OF
OBJECTIVE PHYSICIANS, AND
OTHER HEALTH CARE FROM
VIDORS AND GOVERNMENT
OFFICIALS TO ENSURE THAT
EVERY SINGLE CASE HAS BEEN
FOLLOWED TO THE LETTER.
IN TODAY'S DAY AND AGE IT'S
UNACCEPTABLE THAT PEOPLE ARE
DYING BAD DEATHS AND IT'S
UNACCEPTABLE THAT WE CAN'T
DIE THE WAY WE WANT TO.
WHEN WE'RE FACING A TERMINAL
ILLNESS.
IT COMES DOWN TO A NUMBER OF
THINGS.
COMES DOWN TO AUTONOMY.
TO CONTROL, IT COMES DOWN TO
THE DIING THE WAY WE WANT TO
DIE.
AND IF WE LOOK AT DYING, AS
THE LAST SPECTRUM OF OUR
LIFE, WHERE THROUGHOUT OUR
LIFE WE MAKE TONS OF CHOICES,
THAT ARE RIGHT FOR US OR
WRONG FOR US, WHY CAN CAN'T
WE CHOOSE OUR DYING PROCESS
AND LOOK AT THAT AS THE LAST
SPECTRUM OF OUR LIFE.
DYING WITH DIGNITY WANTS TO
SEE PHYSICIAN-ASSISTED
SUICIDE AND VOLUNTARY
EUTHANASIA LEGAL IN COUNTRY
BECAUSE IT'S ABOUT CHOICES
AND IT'S ABOUT IF JANE DOUGH
WANTS TO DIE THAT WAY, JANE
DOE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DIE
THAT WAY.
IF BOB SMITH WANTS TO DIE
ANOTHER WAY, THEN BOB SMITH
SHOULD DIE THAT WAY.

Back in the studio, Maureen says THE ANSWER TO
OUR HEALTH QUIZ NOW, IF RYAN
IT'S IS KEEPING YOU HOME
FROM WORK YOU HAVE AN
INFULLY FLAMATION OF NASAL
MUCOSA OR A COMMON COLD.
NOW STORIES FROM THE HEALTH
FILES.

Maureen stands in the studio with a screen in the background that reads "Health Digest."

Maureen says WOMEN WHO WEAR FAKE NAILS
ARE BEING WARNED ABOUT
THERIESING OF INFECTION
MOSTLY TO OTHER PEOPLE.

The screen changes to "Manicure."

Maureen says A STUDY OF NURSES WHO WEAR
THE GLUED ON NAILS SHOWED
THEY COULD BE BREEDING
GROUNDS FOR FWERMS AND HAND
WASHING DOESN'T GET RID OF
THE PROBLEM.
NURSES AND OTHER HEALTH CARE
WORKERS SHOULD BE
DISCOURAGED FROM WEARING
FAKE NAILS OR ENCOURAGED TO
WEAR RUBBER GLOVES AND WASH
THEIR HANDS MORE THOROUGHLY.

Now the screen changes to a picture of a baby and a caption that reads "preemies."

Maureen says IF YOU HAVE ONE BABY BORN
PREMATURELY YOU'RE AT HIGHER
RISK OF HAVING THE SECOND
CHILD EARLY TOO.
RESEARCHERS LOOKED AT ALMOST
250,000 WOMEN AND FOUND THAT
A MOTHER WHOSE FIRST CHILD
WAS BORN BEFORE THE EIGHTH
MONTH OF PREGNANCY WAS 12
TIMES MORE LIKELY THAN OTHER
WOMEN TO DELIVER A ANOTHER
CHILD PREMATURELY.
THE STUDY CONFIRMED EARLIER
RESEARCH THAT WOMEN WHO
SMOKE FACE EVEN GREATER RISK
OF PRE MATURE DELIVERRY.

Now the screen changes and reads "Hangovers."

Maureen says SOME PEOPLE SAY DRINKING A
LOT OF WATER HEMS.
OTHERS TRY A COUPLE OF
ASPIRIN.
NOW THERE'S AN ANTIHANGOVER
PILL YOU CAN BUY AT YOUR
LOCAL PHARMACY.
EACH CAPSULE CONTAINS 280
MILLIGRAMSS OF CHINESE
HERBS.
THE PACKAGE DIRECTIONS
ADVISE YOU TO TAKE TWO TO
THREE CAPSULES DURING
ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION.
OF COURSE THERE'S ALWAYS THE
OTHER LESS EXPENSIVE OPTION.
DON'T DRINK SO MUCH.

A blue slide appears with a fact that reads "Early Romans cure their hangovers by eating the raw eggs of owls and sheep lungs. Source: the Internet."

Back in the studio, Maureen says IF IT'S A MIGRAINE THAT'S
KEEPING YOU IN BED, THERE IS
HELP IN THERE.
HERE'S VALERIE SOUTH WITH A
PRESCRIPTION FOR HEADACHE
RELIEF.

Valerie South sits at a desk with a caption that reads "Valerie South, World Headache Alliance." She is in her forties, has short, side-parted reddish blond hair cut in the shape of a bob, and wears a navy blue suit and a pearl necklace.

Valerie says THERE'S GOOD NEWS FROM
THE WORLD OF MEDICINE FOR
PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM
MIGRAINE.
RESEARCH IN THE LAST TEN
YEARS LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT
OF NEW MEDICATIONS THAT ARE
MADE SPECIFICALLY TO ABORT A
MIGRAINE ATTACK.
WE JUST DON'T HAVE THE
PAINKILLERS WE HAVE IN THE
PAST, NOW WE HAVE MEDICATION
THAT'S JUST FOR MIGRAINES.
THERE'S A WHOLE NEW CLASS OF
MEDICATION CALLED THE TRIP
TAN MEDICATIONS.
IMTREX, SO BIG, EMERGE AND A
COUPLE MORE AROUND THE
HORIZON.
IN ADDITION TO THIS, THERE
ARE NEW DELIVERY SYSTEMS FOR
THESE MEDICATIONS.
PEOPLE WITH MIGRAINE OFTEN
HAVE NAUSEA THAT ACCOMPANIES
THEIR ATTACK.
MAY HAVE VOMITING AND FOR
MOST PEOPLE ABSORBING
MEDICATION THROUGH THE
STOMACH CAN BE A PROBLEM
FROM TIME TO TIME.
SO RESEARCHERS HAVE
DEVELOPED TWO NEW DEVICES.
ONE AN AUTO INJECTER.
ALLOWS A PERSON IN THEIR OWN
HOME OR OFFICE TO GIVE AN A
INJECTION OF MEDICATION JUST
UNDER THE SKIN OF THE THIMT
NEEDLE SITS INSIDE OF THIS,
YOU DON'T HAVE TO SEE NEEDLE
AND ONCE YOU PRESS A BUTTON
THE MEDICATION IS DELIVERED
TO YOU INTO YOUR BLOODSTREAM
AND COMPLETELY BY PAS THE
STOMACH.
BUT FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT
FOND OF NEEDLES THERE IS
ANOTHER OPTION AVAILABLE.
THIS IS A NASAL SPRAY.
THIS DEVICE ALLOWS THE
MEDICATION TO BE DELIVERED
THROUGH NOSTRILS AND LAY ON
THE CAPILLARY BEDS THAT LINE
THE NASAL PASSENGERS.
AGAIN ABSORB INTO THE
BLOODSTREAM.
IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN A DOCTOR
FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND STILL
SUFFERING FROM MIGRAINE OR
IF YOUR CURRENT MEDICATION
ISN'T WORKING CORRECTLY FOR
YOU IT MAY BE TIME FOR YOU
TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO
SEE THE DOCTOR AGAIN.
THESE NEW TREATMENTS ARE
AVAILABLE AND HOPE IS
AVAILABLE.
BEST OF LUCK.
