Transcript: Show #2 | Oct 05, 1999

Maureen stands in a studio with windows and sofa chairs in the background. She is in her forties, has short, side-parted, curly blond-highlighted brown hair in a bob, and wears a lilac suit.

She says HELLO, I'M MAUREEN
TAYLOR, AND WELCOME TO "YOUR HEALTH."

(music plays)
The opening sequence begins.

Clips of people of different ages flash on screen one by one against an animated blue sky background. First a baby boy, then a 10-year-old boy with short brown hair, a teenage girl with curly brown hair, a man in his thirties with middle-parted brown hair and glasses, and finally a woman in her sixties with long gray hair.

The title appears: "Your Health."

Clips from the episode flash on screen. The first one shows a male doctor touching a woman's throat.

Maureen says THIS WEEK... HYPOTHYROIDISM.
HOW ONE GLAND AFFECTS MILLIONS OF WOMEN.

Now a clip shows a woman slicing a tomato.

Maureen continues AND EATING RIGHT.
THOUSAND PREVENT CANCER THROUGH DIET.

Now a clip shows a woman sitting at a desk and moving her head in circles, as if stretching her neck muscles.

Maureen continues TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF THE DESK JOB.

Now Maureen stands in the studio next to a screen that shows a circular array of pills, and the caption "The pill."

Maureen says FIRST, THE LATEST HEALTH
NEWS... IF YOU'RE ONE OF THE
60 percent OF WOMEN WHO FORGETS TO TAKE
HER BIRTH CONTROL PILL EVERY
DAY, YOU MAY BE A CANDIDATE NOT
BIRTH CONTROL PATCH.

A banning sign appears on the pills and the caption changes to "The patch."

Maureen continues IT'S IN ITS FINAL TESTING PHASE
AND COULD BE APPROVED IN THE
U.S. BY ARE MARCH.
THE CONTRACEPTIVE PATCH IS
EFFECTIVE FOR UP TO ONE WEEK
AND WON DRUG IS ABSORBED
THROUGH THE SKIN, WORKS JUST
LIKE ARE ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES.

Now the image changes to a brain scan and the caption changes to "The brain."

Maureen continues AGING BRAINS SEEM TO HAVE A
STORAGE SPACE PROBLEM.
THAT ACCOUNTS FOR DIMINISHED
MEMORY.
RESEARCHERS SAY OUR WORKING
MEMORY ABILITIES PEAK AT AGE
45.
AFTER THAT, THERE'S A STEADY
DECLINE.
HEALTHY SENIORS HAVE THE MEN
TALL CAPACITY TO RETAIN
INFORMATION, BUT HAVE LESS ROOM
TO STORE IT AS MEMORY, ONCE
THEY'RE PRESENTED WITH NEW
INFORMATION.

Now the caption changes to "Contacts."

Maureen continues AND BETTER TAKE THOSE CONTACT
LENSES OUT BEFORE YOU GO TO BED.
NO MATTER HOW COMFORTABLE THEY FEEL.
RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT
SLEEPING IN THEM, EVEN THE NEW
DISPOSABLE KIND, CAN INCREASE
YOUR CHANCE OF DEVELOPING A
POTENTIALLY BLINDING EYE INFECTION.
DUTCH SCIENTISTS HAVE FOUND
THAT PEOPLE WHO ROUTINELY SLEEP
IN THEIR SOFT CONTACT ARE 2
TIMES NOR LIKELY TO DEVELOP
BACTERIAL INFECTIONS THEIR
CORNEAS COMPARED TO PEOPLE THAT
USE HARD LENS THAT IS HAVE TO
BE REMOVED EVERY NIGHT.

A slate reads "Contact lenses float on the tears on top of the cornea. The surface layer of oil and tears holds them in place.
Source: The complete health guide by June Engel."

Maureen says IT'S A POTENTIALLY FATAL
CONDITION THAT OFTEN GOES
UNDIAGNOSED.
IT'S CALLED HYPOTHYROIDISM AND
UP TO HALF A MILLION OF WOMEN
MAY HAVE IT.
FATIGUE AND WEIGHT GAIN ARE
COMMON SYMPTOM AND MANY DOCTORS MISS IT.
PLACING THE WOMEN AT GREATER RISK.

Now music plays and a clip shows a woman in her early fifties.

A female voice says I HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS
HAPPENING TO MY BODY, OR MY
MIND QUITE FRANKLY.
I MEAN, IF YOU REALLY WANT TO
KNOW THE TRUTH, PROBABLY I WAS
ARE FAR MORE WORRIED ABOUT MY
MIND THAN MY BODY.

Another woman, in her forties, says
IT'S AN EXHAUSTION.
IT'S-- IT'S A FEELING OF NOT
BEING ABLE TO COPE ANYMORE WITH
THE DAY.
THAT YOU JUST WANT IT TO END.
YOU JUST LIKE TO GO TO SLEEP.

A woman in her late thirties says
VERY, VERY TIRED.
VERY, AH, VERY LETHARGIC.
COULDN'T GET OUT OF THE BED IN
THE MORNING.
JUST REALLY DOWN.
AND NOT ABLE TO LOSE WEIGHT.
VERY COLD ALL THE TIME.
YOU KNOW, IT TOOK ME ABOUT FOUR
MONTHS TO FINALLY REALIZE THAT
THERE'S REALLY SOMETHING WRONG.

Now in a doctor's office, a male doctor in his sixties speaks to the blond woman and a man in his forties.

The doctor says HYPOTHYROIDISM IN MILD FORM
IS PREVALENT.
IN WOMEN OVER 50, ABOUT 14 percent
WILL BE FOUND TO HAVE HYPOTHYRO
HYPOTHYROIDISM TO SOME DEGREE.

A caption appears on screen. It reads "Doctor Robert Volpe. Endocrinologist."

Robert continues IT MEANS THAT INSUFFICIENT ARE
HORMONE OF THE THYROID IS NOT
BEING PRODUCED OR NOT ENOUGH
THYROID HORMONE IS BEING
DISTRIBUTED TO THE VITAL ORGANS
OF THE BODY.
FOR EXAMPLE, THE HEART RATE
WILL SLOW UP.

Clips show Robert examining the woman's throat and measuring her blood pressure.

Robert continues THE SKIN WILL-- WOULD NOT BE
WARM AND MOIST AS IT IS
NORMALLY BUT COULD BE COOL ASK DREI.
FOR EXAMPLE, THE PERSON COULD
BE CONSTIPATED AND BLOATED AND
SEEMINGLY FULL OF GAS.
UM, THE MUSCLE WOULD BE SLOW.
AND-- AND STIFF.
AND-- AND THEN THEREBY-- THERE
SOB SOME SPECIFIC THINGS IN
SEVERE HYPOTHYROIDISM... THERE
MIGHT BE SLOW THINKING, SLOW
BRAIN FUNCTION AND ALSO IN
INCOORDINATION.

In his office, he says BLOOD PRESSURE'S NORMAL.

Then the blond woman says
AND I KEPT GOING TO DOCTORS,
DIFFERENT DOCTOR AND THEY KEPT
SAYING THIS IS BECAUSE YOU'VE
JUST GIVEN BIRTH.
IT WAS FOUR MONTHS LATER THAT I
FINALLY THOUGHT NO, I HAVE TO
GO TO ANOTHER DOCTOR.
SO HE DEVELOPED-- HE DID ALL
THE BLOOD WORK.

Now the woman in her fifties reappears and says I FINALLY HAD TO SEE A
DOCTOR BECAUSE I WASN'T SURE IF
IT WAS JUST STRESS.
IT WAS SO OVERWHELMING.
IT HAD LASTED FOR SUCH A LONG
TIME.
I DIDN'T-- THERE WAS NOTHING I
COULD DO TO FEEL BETTER.
UM, LIKE I TRIED TO GET HUGE
SLEEPS, LIKE 12 OR 13-HOUR
SLEEPS, UM, AND IT DIDN'T MAKE
MY DIFFERENCE.
I'D STILL FEEL THE SAME WAY
WHEN I WOKE UP IN THE MORNING
AS IF I HAD SLEPT THREE OR FOUR
HOURS.
IT JUST DIDN'T MAKE ANY
DIFFERENCE AT ALL.
WE CHANGED OUR DIET.
TO-- TO GET RID OF FATS AND...
AND ALL KINDS OF THINGS THAT
DRAG YOU DOWN.
UM, NUTRITIONALLY, THAT DIDN'T WORK.

The woman in her forties, with long brown hair, says UM, I WAS ADMITTED TO
EMERGENCY.
I WAS THERE FOR FIVE HOURS.
I WAS TESTED.
WITH A CAT SCAN AND-- AND, AH,
MACHINE WHERE THEY JUST SWIVEL
YOU AROUND.
AND I GUESS, AH, THEY WERE
TESTING FOR BRAIN PROBLEMS.
AND THEN WHEN I WAS RELEASED
AFTER FIVE HOURS, I STILL
COULDN'T WALK.
I WAS VERY, VERY GROGGY.

The woman in her fifties says I WAS EXPERIENCING ALL OF
THESE SYMPTOMS, INCLUDING THE
TAKING OF OF ANTI DEPRESS ANTS
AND-- AND HYPNOTIC SLEEPING
PILLS.
FOR-- FOR, AH, ABOUT TWO
AND-A-HALF YEARS BEFORE, AH, A
BLOOD TEST SHOWED THAT I HAD H
HYPOTHYROIDISM.

The woman in her forties says MY UNDERSTAND FROM THE
HOSPITAL'S EXPLORATIONS WAS
THAT THEY REALLY DIDN'T KNOW
WHAT WAS WRONG.
FROM ALL THE TESTING THAT THEY
DID, THEY COULD NOT PUT THEIR
FINGER ON THE PROBLEM.
SO, AH, I-- THAT WAS FIVE HOURS
WORTH OF TESTING.
AND IT WAS VERY, VERY THOROUGH.
SO I-- I FRANKLY DIDN'T KNOW
WHAT TO DO AFTER THAT.

Robert says THE REASON THAT MANY WOMEN
ARE NOT, AH, DIAGNOSED IS THAT
THIS-- THE SYMPTOMS ARE NOT
ONLY MILD, BUT THEY ARE ALSO
NON-SPECIFIC.
THERE ARE MANY OTHER CONDITIONS
THAT ARE NOT DUE TO
HYPOTHYROIDISM WHERE THE
SYMPTOMS CAN BE QUITE SEVERE.
PERHAPS, UM, MORE OBVIOUS THAN
WHAT WE SEE IN HYPOTHYROIDISM,
AT LEAST IN THE EARLY STAGES.
THE DIAGNOSIS IS MADE BY BLOOD
TESTING.

A clip shows a female assistant extracting blood from the blond woman's arm.

Robert continues TEST IS-- THAT IS GENERALLY
DONE FOR SCREENING IS JUST A
SINGLE TELS THAT-- THE TSH.
AH, OR THYROID STIMULATING
HORMONE.
BECAUSE IT WILL RISE EVEN LONG
BEFORE THE-- THE LEVEL OF
THYROID HORMONE DECLINE.
WELL, IF IT'S NOT TREATED AND
IT GOES ON TO A MORE SYMPTOM
SYMPTOMATIC STAGE, THEN IT CAN
CAUSE VERY SERIOUS HEART
DISEASE.
AH, HARDENING OF THE ARTERIES.
HYPERTENSION.
UM, AND A GREAT DISABILITY.
AND DEATH.
ULTIMATE DEATH.
TREATMENT IS SO SIMPLE.
IT'S A MATTER OF TAKING THYROID
MEDICATION.
THYROID MEDICATION THAT WE
ALMOST ALWAYS PRESCRIBE IS TH
THYROXIN OR T-4.
RIGHT NOW THE PRACTICE IS TO
SEE PATIENTS FOR SYMPTOMS.
WE DON'T GO OUT AND SCREEN
THE-- THE POPULATION.
UM, IT-- IT-- IF PATIENTS DON'T
GO TO DOCTORS, THEN THEY DON'T
GET SCREENED.
THEY DON'T GET TESTED.
NOTHING HAPPENS TO THEM.
AND THEY COULD GO ALONG FOR
YEARS VARYING THE DISEASE IN A
MILD FORM, AH, WITHOUT BEING
TESTED-- WITHOUT BEING TESTED
OR TREATED.
SO WHAT WE WOULD LIKE OF COURSE
IS TO SCREEN THE POPULATION.
DO SOMETHING TO ACTUALLY ENSURE
THAT ALL WOMEN OVER THE AGE OF
50 HAVE A-- HAVE A BLOOD TEST
EVERY TWO OR THREE YEARS, AH,
WITH THIS IN MIND.
WE'RE NOT ANYWHERE NEAR THAT.

A clip shows the woman in her fifties walking outside.

She says AFTER I TOOK THE HORMONES, I
NOTICED THAT I HAD AN-- AN
AMAZING INCREASE IN ENERGY.
I-- I DIDN'T TAKE ME EVERY BIT
THAT I POSSESSED TO-- TO GET
MYSELF OUT OF BED ANY LONGER.
UM, AND I COULD SUSTAIN
ACTIVITY THROUGHOUT-- THROUGH
AN ENTIRE DAY WITHOUT HAVING TO
HAVE A NAP.
UM, AND I DIDN'T HAVE TO SLEEP
IN IN ORDER TO GET THAT AMOUNT
OF ENERGY TO GET ME THROUGH THE DAY.

A clip shows the woman in her forties working in an office.

She says I WOULD CONSIDER IT AN-- AN
IMPROVEMENT JUST THE FACT THAT
I'M ABLE TO FUNCTION AT ALL.
AND TO WORK, SPEND AN
EIGHT-HOUR DAY, AND I DO HAVE
LONGER DAYS.
AND SO I CAN-- I CONSIDER IT A
BENEFIT FOR ME TO BE ABLE TO BE
ABLE TO COPE WITH ALL OF THAT.
AND-- AND, YOU KNOW, GET ON
WITH MY LIFE.

The woman in her thirties says says I HAVE TO ACCEPT MA-- THAT
MY BODY IS NOT, UM, IS NOT
PERFORMING PROPERLY AND THAT...
SOMETHING I'VE GOT ACCUSTOMED
TO AND IT'S SOMETHING I'LL
ACCEPT.
I WON'T DWELL ON IT.

Back in the studio, Maureen says IF YOU WANT MORE INFORMATION
ON HYPOTHYROIDISM, CONTACT the Thyroid Foundation of Canada, 1-800-267-8822.
LOTS MORE TO COME, INCLUDING
THIS WEEK'S HEALTH QUIZ.
YOUR DOCTOR SAYS YOU HAVE TINNITUS.
DO YOU HAVE...

A slate reads "1. An earache, 2. A tin ear, 3. A ringing in your ears."

Maureen continues THE ANSWER LATER ON "YOUR HEALTH."
ONE DAY IT'S BROCCOLI, THE NEXT
DAY IT'S SOY.
AND NOW THE BEST THING TO
PREVENT CANCER, WE'RE TOLD, IS
TOMATOES.
THE GENERAL PUBLIC'S INTEREST
IN THE CONNECTION BETWEEN WHAT
WE PUT IN TO OUR BODIES AND HOW
THAT AFFECTS OUR HEALTH HAS
FUELED THE PUSH FOR RESEARCHERS
TO DEFINE THE FOOD THAT HEAL.
WE'RE BOMBARDED WITH HYPE ABOUT
FOOD FADS THAT PER PORT TO
PREVENT CANCER, FROM ANTI
OXIDANTS TO ANTI CARCINOGENIC
COCKTAILS, THERE ARE FOODS THAT
ARE GAINING A REPUTATION FOR
CANCER PREVENTION OR EVEN
CANCER THERAPIES.
WHAT ARE WE TO BELIEVE?
MORE IMPORTANTLY , WHAT SHOULD
WE BE EATING AND WHAT DOES
SCIENCE SAY ABOUT ALL OF THIS?
DR. NEIL FLESHER IS AN
ONCOLOGIST AT THE SUNNYBROOK
REGIONAL CANCER CENTRE IN TORONTO.
AND ANNETTE MOORE IS A REGISTERED DIETICIAN AND WELCOME BOTH OF YOU.

Neil is in his late thirties, clean-shaven, with short wavy black hair. He's wearing glasses, a black suit, gray shirt, and black tie.
Annette is in her forties, with shoulder-length auburn hair and bangs. She's wearing a black suit.

Neil says THANK YOU.

Annette says THANK YOU.

Neil says THERE ARE SO MANY FOODS OUT
THERE THAT CLAIM TO BE CANCER
PREVENTING.
DR. FLEISHER, HOW DO WE KNOW
WHICH ONES ARE REAL AND WHICH
ONES ARE JUST HYPE?

A caption appears on screen. It reads "Doctor Neil Fleshner. Oncologist."

Neil says WELL, UNFORTUNATELY, THERE
IS A LOT OF HYPE IN THE FIELD.
I THINK WHAT I'D LIKE TO DO AS
A TRADITIONAL ALOPATHIC DOCTOR
AND AS A SCIENTIST IS LOOK AT
WHICH NUTRIENTS ARE BEST BASED
IN SCIENCE.
LOOK AT A CULMINATION OF
EVIDENCE FROM LABORATORY
STUDIES AND HUMAN CLINICAL
STUDIES TO KNOW IF THESE
PRODUCTS REALLY ARE BENEFICIAL.

Maureen says AND WHAT HAVE FOUND SO FAR?

Neil says WELL, WE'RE DOING A LOT OF
WORK, PARTICULARLY MY INTEREST
IS IN PROSTATE CANCER AND WE'RE
DOING WORK WITH A HOST OF MICRO
NUTRIENTS AND IN PARTICULAR THE
TOMATO BASED LICOPEN WHICH ARE
WHAT TURNS THE TOMATO RED.
MAY HAVE INTERESTING PROPERTIES
THAT MAY DELAY THE PROGRESSION
OF CANCER AND WE'RE DOING A LOT
OF WORK WITH THE SOY BEAN AND
ITS DERIVITIVE INSIDE
PREVENTING CANCER AND DOING
WORK WITH VITAMIN E AND OTHER
THINGS.
THEY LOOK INTERESTING.

Maureen says AS DIETICIAN, YOU PROBABLY
WATCHED THIS IN SOME RATHER NEW
SURGING INTEREST IN FOODS THAT
CAN HEAL.
WHAT DO YOU TELL CLIENTS OF
YOURS ABOUT WHAT TO EAT TO
PREVENT CANCER?

The caption changes to "Anet Mor. Dietician."

Annette says I STILL BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE
NEED TO GET BACK TO MOTHER
NATURE TYPES OF FOODS.
SO NATURAL FOOD.
UM, BECAUSE THE RESEARCH IS ONE
DAY BROCCOLI AND ONE DAY SOY,
UM, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT
YOU GET A WHOLE WELL-ROUNDED,
UM, VARIETY OF FOOD AND MAY BE
KEEPING IT DOWN TO PLANTS OR...
PLANTS SOURCES OF FOODS SO
THAT'S OUR SAFEST BET.
THE OLD MOTHER NATURE'S NATURAL
FOOD SOURCES.

Maureen says LET'S TALK ABOUT SOY,
BECAUSE WOMEN ESPECIALLY ARE...
ARE TOLD TO TRY TO BRING MORE
SOY INTO THEIR DIET.
WHAT DO WE KNOW THAT SOY DOES?

Neil says WELL, SOY HAS SOME
INTERESTING PROPERTIES.
FIRST OF ALL, SOY LIKE ANY
OTHER FOOD PROBABLY HAS
HUNDREDS OF COMPOUNDS THAT MAY
BE A BENEFICIAL IN PREVENTING,
AH, YOU KNOW, ILL HEALTH.
BUT, AH, THE INTERESTED...
INTEREST OF SOY AT LEAST IN
PART THEY HAVE FIDO ESTROGEN
IN EFFECTS AND BREAST CANCER IN
THE FEMALE AND PROSTATE CANCER
IN THE MALE ARE ESTROGEN
CANCERS.
ONE THINKS IF THEY HAVE
FIDOESTROGEN THAT IS-- THAT'S A
WAY TO AVOID THOSE CANCERS.
LOOK AT-- YOU LOOK AT JAPAN AND
CHINA, HUGE AMOUNTS OF SOY WERE
TAKEN IN DAILY AND PROSTATE
CANCERS AND BREAST CANCER ARE
RARE DISEASES OVER THERE.
AND FIDOESTROGENS IS IMPORTANT.
AND THERE'S SOMETHING WITH
MENOPAUSE AND THE AGING WOMAN.
WHEN YOU GO THROUGH THE
ESTROGEN WITHDRAWAL, YOU GO
THROUGH HOT FLASHES AND THIS
MAY BE A NATURAL WAY TO REPLACE
HORMONES BECAUSE THERE'S SO
MUCH INTEREST IN AGING TODAY.
SO THAT'S BASICALLY, AH, THE
INTEREST.
THERE ARE OTHER PROPERTIES,
HOWEVER, OF SOY THAT-- THAT ARE
INTERESTING, AH.
THERE ARE COMPOUNDS IN IT THAT
CAN EFFECT CANCER CELL
MOBILITY.
AS TO HOW THEY SPREAD AND CAN
EVEN KILL ESTABLISHED CANCER
CELLS.
SO THERE ARE OTHER-- PROBABLY
OTHER PROPERTIES LESS WELL
KNOWN BUT AGAIN CONTINUING TO
DO WORK ABOUT THAT.

Maureen says SO WHAT YOU'RE SAYING IS
THAT SOME OF THESE CAN'T ONLY
PREVENT CANCER IN PEOPLE THAT
DON'T HAVE IT BUT CAN HELP SLOW
CANCER IN PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN
DIAGNOSED?

Neil says IT'S POTENTIALLY POSSIBLE.
CERTAINLY IN THE ANIMAL MODELS
THAT WE WORK WITH, AH, IT SEEMS
THAT IT MAY HAVE THOSE
PROPERTIES.

Maureen says ALL RIGHT.
ANNETTE, GETTING SOY IN MY
DIET.
I HAVE NOT BEEN THAT SUCCESSFUL
YET.
I DO NOT LIKE TOFU.
WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO?

Annette says THE LATEST ONE THAT IS
COMING OUT IS SOY NUTS A LOT OF
ROASTED SOY NUTS ARE ON THE
MARKET NOW, READILY AVAILABLE
FOR INDIVIDUALS SO THEY CAN DO
THAT.
UM, AND USE THAT FOR A SNACK,
UM, TYPE OF FOOD.
THE OTHER THING ARE-- SOY
SOYISOLETS WHERE THEY LOOK LIKE
MEAT BUT ACTUALLY ARE MADE FROM
SOY PRODUCTS.
USING SOY ISOLETE VERSUS BEEN
VERY POPULAR IN THE LAST LITTLE
WHILE.
AND NOT ONLY VEGETARIANS ARE
USING THEM BUT OTHER PEOPLE.
INSTEAD OF HAVING AN ACTUAL HOT
DOG FOR A CHILD, PEOPLE ARE
GIVING CHILDREN HOT DOG
SUBSTITUTES MADE BY SOY
PRODUCT.
THAT'S A DIFFERENT TYPE OF
THING.
IF I CAN JECT FOR A SECOND....
IF I CAN INTERJECT FOR A
SECOND.
REMEMBER, SOY IS ALSO A LOW
FAT.
PEOPLE COOK, THEY COOK AT LOW
FAT.
THAT'S ANOTHER THING BESIDES
JUST THE FIDOESTROGEN.
WE HAVE LOW FAT AND THAT COULD
BE ANOTHER REASON WHY-- WHY
IT'S A POSSIBILITY THAT IT
COULD BE PRESENTTIVE FOR
CANCER.

Maureen says ALL RIGHT....
PREVENTIVE FOR CANCER.
LET'S GO TO THE LICOPENS.
YOU SAY IT'S THE RED PIGMENT IN
THE TOMATOES.
IT IS THE SAME THING THAT PINK
FRUIT HAS?

Neil says ANYTHING IN MOTHER NATURE
THAT'S NATURAL RED HAS
LICOPENS.
THE PROCESSING OF THE TOMATOES
PRODUCTS.
KETCHUP AND SAUCE, THEY'RE MORE
LICOPENS BECAUSE THE PROCESSING
RELEASES THE LICOPENS AND...

Maureen says SO IT'S BETTER TO HAVE IT IN
MY SPAGHETTI SAUCE THAN TO EAT
A RAW TOMATO?

Neil says ABSOLUTELY.

Maureen says YOU-- YOU PROBABLY DON'T
LIKE THE PROCESSED FOODS...

Annette says NO, I DON'T, AS A MATTER OF
FACT.
I LIKE THE FACT THAT IF A
TOMATO, YOU CAN GET THE FIBER
COMPONENT AS WELL.
AND THERE'S BEEN RESEARCH
LINKING FIBER AS WELL TO
PREVENTING SOME KIND OF CANCERS
AS WELL SO IF YOU CAN'T GET THE
TOMATO, OBVIOUSLY YOU GET THE
TOMATO JUICE OR THE TOMATO
SAUCE, ABSOLUTELY.
UM, SO-- SO KEEPING
EVERYTHING-- BECAUSE WHEN WE
PROCESS, WE ALSO BREAK DOWN
SOME OF THE AVAILABILITY OF
SOME OF THE FIDO CHEMICALS AS
WELL.

Maureen says ALL RIGHT.
LET'S MOVE ON THEN TO FLAX.
WHAT SPECIFIC CANCER HAS FLAX
BEEN FOUND TO PREVENT?

Neil says AGAIN, SIMILAR STORY IS SOY.
AH, REALLY BREAST AND PROSTATE
WOULD PROBABLY BE THE MAJOR TWO.
AND AGAIN, SIMILAR, THESE
NATURAL FIDOESTROGEIN
PROPERTIES IN FLAXSEED.
ALSO THE-- THE BREAK DOWN OR
DISTRIBUTION OF THE TYPES OF
FATTY ACIDS IN FLAXSEED ARE
ALSO BENEFICIAL.
BUT IT SEEMS TO BE PRIMARILY
THE FIDOESTROGEN EFFECT.

Maureen says HOW DO YOU GET PLAKS INTO THE DIET?

Annette says I WOULD LOVE TO SAY SPRINKLE
INTO THE CEREAL AND SPRINKLE IT
ON THE YOGURT.
THEY FOUND NOT JUST THE WHOLE
SEED, THE FLAX ITSELF, BUT
HAVING IT GROUND UP SO GRINDING
IT IN UP A COFFEE GRINDER
REQUIRES SPRINKLE IT ON TO THE
FOODS IS ABSOLUTELY THE WAY TO
GO.
UM, YOU MANAGE TO BREAK DOWN
THE LITTLE BIT OF THE
COMPONENT.
AND IT'S THE POWDER WITHIN THE
PRODUCT THAT-- OF THE FLAXSEEDS
THAT HELP TO HAVE THE CHEMICALS
THAT WE NEED.

Maureen says NOW WE KNOW THESE ARE THE
THINGS WE WANT TO TRY AND
INCORPORATE INTO THE DIET, BUT
PEOPLE DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH.
CAN I GET ALL OF THE AMOUNTS OF
THESE THINGS I NEED IN MY DIET
IN YOUR OPINION?

Neil says IN MY OPINION, NO.
I THINK, AH, IN A TYPICAL
WESTERN DIET, IT'S-- FOR
EXAMPLE, VERY DIFFICULT TO
CONSUME THE AMOUNTS OF SOY, FOR
EXAMPLE, OR ISOFLAVINS OR THE
FIDOESTROGENS THAT ARE
NECESSARY TO DO WHAT WE DO IN
THE LABORATORY.
IF YOU WANT TO GO TO THAT
EXTENT, IN MY OPINION, YOU HAVE
TO SUPPLEMENT.
AH, PARTICULARLY AS WELL
BECAUSE WE ALSO BELIEVE A
LOW-FAT DIET IS IMPORTANT SO TO
TAKE THINGS LIKE VITAMIN E
WHICH COMES FROM PLANT-BASED
FATS, IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THE
FAT CONDOWN, AGAIN, IT'S PRETTY
HARD TO GET IT UNLESS YOU TAKE A
SUPPLEMENT OF VITAMIN E.
AND THE SAME THING WITH
SOLINIUM.
THERE ARE SOLINIUM-ENRICHED
FOODS, BUT IT VARIES.
THERE ARE SOLINIUMDEFICIEN
AREAS.
IN FACT CANADA IS LIKE THAT.
IF WE EAT-- IT-- WE MAY NOT GET
THE SOLINIUM YOU NEED TO
PREVENT...

Maureen says YOU'RE SAYING SUPPLEMENTS,
WE HAVE TO GO TO THEM.
ANNETTE, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Annette says WELL, I-- I DON'T RECOMMEND
SUPPLEMENTS FOR MY CLIENTS.
DEPENDING AGAIN, UM, IF-- WHEN
I-- WHEN I DO SUGGEST, UM,
LOW-FAT DIETS THAT, MAY BE
VITAMIN E.
MAY BE THE ONLY ONE I RECOMMEND
FOR A CLIENT.
UM, JUST LIKE THE DOCTOR SAID,
WHEN YOU DO HAVE THE WESTERN
DIET HERE, IT IS DIFFICULT TO
GET A LOT OF THE FOODS AND...
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES THAT WE
NEED TO GET.
I HAVE TO TAKE INDIVIDUALS'
LIFESTYLE INTO CONSIDERATION
PRIOR TO RECOMMENDING ANY
SUPPLEMENTS.
I REALLY DO LIKE HAVING
INDIVIDUALS TAKE, UM, THE-- THE
NATURAL WAY OF THINGS.
BECAUSE WE DON'T KNOW WHEN WE
SUPPLEMENT-- WHEN WE ISOLATE
CERTAIN VITAMINS AND MINERALS,
WE DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE
MISSING OUT.
UM, SO THEREFORE YOU'RE
ISOLATING-- THE COMBINATION
IT-- THE BINGS OF FIDO KHEL
KALS WE STILL DON'T KNOW ABOUT
AND THEREFORE WHEN WE ISOLATE
THEM INTO A SUPPLEMENT FORM, WE
MAY LOSE THE BENEFICIAL EFFECT
OF PREVENTING CANCER OR
REDUCING OF RISK OF CANCER.

Neil says I WOULDN'T DISAGREE.
IF WE COULD DO IT WITH THE
REGULAR DIET, THAT'S PREFERABLE.
I WOULD MAKE THE PUSH HERE
SUPPORTING THE RESEARCH STUDIES
WHAT WE'RE DOING WHICH AIMS TO
DO THAT.
WE TAKE A PARTICULAR VITAMIN
AND TEST THAT IN A RANDOMIZED
TRIAL AND SEE IF THAT WORKS.
THERE IS ALREADY DATA FROM TWO
RANDOMIZED TRIALS, WHICH IS
REALLY THE ULTIMATE FORM OF OF
AN EXPERIMENTATION, SUGGESTING
BENEFITS TO SUPPLEMENTAL ANTI
OX DANLTS.
ONE FOR VITAMIN A AND ONE FOR
SOLINIUM PREVENTING CERTAIN
FORMS OF CANCER.

Maureen says WE ONLY HAVE 30 SECONDS LEFT.
ARE THESE PLANT COMPOUNDS GOING
TO REPLACE CHEMOTHERAPY AND
TREATING CANCER?

Neil says I DON'T KNOW IF IT WILL GO
THAT FAR.
I THINK CHEMOTHERAPY WILL BE
REPLACED BY MORE SOPHISTICATED
GENE BASED AND BIOLOGICALLY
BASED THERAPIES.
I THINK THIS WILL HAVE A ROLE
IN PREVENTION AND PROBABLY HAVE
SOME ROLE AS A-- AS A
SUPPLEMENTARY OR COMPLIMENTARY
TYPES OF THERAPIES ALONG WITH
TRADITIONAL, AH, UM,
CHEMOTHERAPY, RADIATION
THERAPY, SURGERY THAT WE'RE
GOING TO HAVE IN THE COMING
DECADE OR TWO.

Maureen says INTERESTING.
THANK YOU BOTH FOR THIS.

Annette says YOU'RE WELCOME.

Neil says THANK YOU.

Maureen says DON'T GO AWAY.
IN A MOMENT, HOW TO WORK FOR
HOURS AT YOUR COMPUTER PAIN
FREE.
THAT'S LATER ON "YOUR HEALTH."

(music plays)
A clip shows a woman stretching her neck muscles.

Then, Maureen says WHEN VIAGRA HIT THE
MARKET, MORE THAN 55,000
CANADIAN MEN GOT A PRESCRIPTION
IN THE FIRST MONTH ALONE.
BUT IS THIS LATEST TREATMENT
FOR IMPOTENCY THE CURE FOR
SAGGING SEX LIVES OR A QUICK
FIX THAT ONLY WORKS ON PART OF
THE PROBLEM?
HERE'S DR. RICHARD CASEY WITH A
SECOND OPINION.

Richard appears next to a slate that reads "Second opinion."
He's in his late forties, clean-shaven, with short brown hair.
A caption reads "Doctor Richard Casey. Urologist."

Richard says VIAGRA HAS MADE THE
TREATMENT OF ERECTILE
DYSFUNCTION EASIER FOR THE
PHYSICIAN AND NOT THE PATIENT.
BEFORE WE HAD A MAGIC PILL OF A
PATIENT COMPLAINING OF SEXUAL
PROBLEMS, WE TOOK TIME EXPLORING
THE RELATIONSHIP AND TALKING TO
THE PARTNER AND OFTEN
SUGGESTION THAT IS MIGHT HELP
IMPROVE THEIR SEX LIVE.
NOW MEN ARE QUITE WILLING TO
ACCEPT A QUICK FIX.
COME TO THE OFFICE AND TELL THE
PHYSICIANS THEY'RE HAVING
PROBLEMS WITH THE ERECTION THEY
GET THE PILL.
WE WANT THE ERECTION TO BE HARD
AND LONG ENOUGH AND IF A DOCTOR
GIVES A PRESCRIPTION AND
PROMISES TO DO THAT, WE'RE
HAPPY WITH THAT.
AS A PHYSICIAN, WE HAVE TO BE
CAREFUL NOT TO TAKE THAT EASY
SOLUTION.
BECAUSE IT'S NEVER AS EASY AS
THAT.
AND IN FACT, WE CAN MAKE PEOPLE
WORSE GIVING THEY WILL A PILL
AND RAISING THEIR EXPECTATIONS
AND NOT INFORMING THEIR PARTNER.
DON'T WANT THEM ALL DRESSED UP
WITH NOWHERE TO GO.
SOME PHYSICIANS SAY WE SHOULD
GET THEIR PARTNER'S CONSENT.
WE USED TO TELL PATIENT WHEN IS
THEY HAD-- THAT THEY SHOULD GO
HOME AND HAVE ENTER COURSE
THREE TIMES A WEEK.
A REMINDER OF A PATIENT THAT
SAID "HONEY, THE DOCTOR SAID I
HAVE TO HAVE SEX THREE TIMES A
WEEK."
SHE SAID "THAT'S GREAT.
PUT ME DOWN FOR TWO."

A slate reads "Is Viagra the answer for women?"

Richard says VIAGRA'S THE ANSWER TO WOMEN IF
THEIR PARTNERS ARE HAVING A PROBLEM.
BUT IS SOMETHING VIAGRA CAN
TAKE FOR WOMEN TO IMPROVE THEIR
SEX LIVES?
PROBABLY NOT.
THERE'S A SIMILAR PHYSIOLOGY
BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN.
AND PENIAL BLOOD FLOW IS LIKE
AN INCREASE IN THE VAGINA BLOOD
FLOW.
AND THE VIAGRA CAN MAKE THEM
MORE EROUSED.
BUT THAT DOESN'T TRANSLATE INTO
A SEX LIFE.
THE COMMON DISCOURSE FOR WOMEN
SEXUAL PROBLEMS ARE MAIFRPBLG.
WOMEN PROBABLY DON'T HAVE
HORMONAL OR ATOMIC PROBLEMS.
IT'S A RELATIONSHIP ISSUE.
IF SHE'S WITH A PARTNER THAT'S
UNINEVENT-- UNINVENTIVE FOR 0
YEARS, SHE MAY NOT BE AROUSED.
IT'S HARD TO TREAT THESE
PATIENTS AND THEY NEED
COUNSELLING AND HE NEEDS TO
READ A COUPLE OF BOOKS AND TALK
TO A-- TALK TO A COUNSELLOR TO
IMPROVE HIS LOVE TECHNIQUES.
MOST WOMEN DON'T HAVE PHYSICAL
PROBLEMS THAT ENTER VEER WITH
THEIR SEX LIVES.

A slate reads "What's the downside to Viagra?"

Richard says DRUGS LIKE VIAGRA MAKE FORCE
SOME PHYSICIANS TO FOCUS ON THE
ORGAN AND NOT THE PERSON.
RECENTLY IN MY OFFICE, I HAD A
PARENT WHO-- I HAD A PATIENT
WHO-- A COUPLE THAT HAD SEXUAL
PROBLEMS FOR A LONG TIME AND
USING THE NEW INJECTION
AVAILABLE FOR ABOUT TEN YEARS
BUT RECENTLY WERE INTRODUCED TO
AN INJECTION WHERE-- HE GIVES
HIMSELF A SHOT IN THE PENIS AND
HAS AN EYEKS FOR ONE OR TWO
HOURS.
ON DEMAND AND DOESN'T REQUIRE
FORE PLAY AND HE JUST GIVES
HIMSELF A SHOT.
HE HAD A PROBLEM GETTING AN
EJECTION FOR A-- ERECTION FOR A
LONG TIME.
YET THEY WERE UNHAPPY WITH
THEIR SEX LIVE AND I DIDN'T
UNDERSTAND WHY.
AND THE WIFE SAID I LIKED HIM
BETTER WHEN HE WAS IMPOTENT
BECAUSE HE TRIED HARDER.
HE SPENT TIME CARESSING ME AND
TOUCHING ME AND NOW HE'S SO
PENAL ECCENTRIC I DON'T ENJOY
SEX WITH HIM ANY ARE MORE.

A slate reads "So, is there sex after 50?"

Richard says YOU CAN BE MARRIED FOR 30 OR 40
YEARS AND STILL HAVE A
SATISFYING SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP
WITH YOUR PARTNER.
BUT YOU HAVE TO REALIZE THAT
SEX WHEN YOU'RE MARRIED IS...
WHEN YOU'RE FIRST MARRIED IS A
LOT DIFFERENT WHEN-- THAN SEX
WHEN YOU'RE IN YOUR 70'S.
WHEN WE THINK OF SEX, AH, WHEN
WE FIRST-- IT INVOLVES
PENETRATION AND MAYBE A
70-YEAR-OLD COUPLE AREN'T
HAVING PENETRATION BUT HAVING
JUST AS GOOD SEX IN THEIR 07'S.
IN FACT, SOMETIMES BETTER THAN
THEY ARE IN THEIR-- WHEN THEY
WERE HAVING IT IN THEIR TEENS OR 20'S.

Now Maureen says
THE ANSWER TO OUR HEALTH QUIZ...
YOU MAY BE ABLE TO CARRY A
TUNE, BUT IF YOU'RE DIAGNOSED
WITH TINNITUS YOU HAVE A
RINGING IN YOUR EARS.
NECK ACHE, EYESTRAIN, CARPAL
TUNNEL SYNDROME.
SITTING FOR HOURS AT A COMPUTER
CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH.
HERE'S PHYSICAL OWE THERAPIST
KAREN WEBB TO SHOW US HOW TO
AVOID THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED
WITH A DESK JOB.

Karen stands in an office. A caption reads "Karen Webb. Physiotherapist."
Karen is in her late forties, with long blond hair in a ponytail.

She says MANY OF US SIT FOR LONG
HOURS AT DESKS AND COMPUTERS,
COMMON COMPLAINTS INCLUDE LOW
BACK PAIN, STIFF NECKS, MUSCLE
TENSION IN THE SHOULDER-NECK
AREA AND WRIST AND HAND
PROBLEMS.
THERE ARE SOME SIMPLE STEPS WE
CAN TAKE TO HELP MINIMIZE AND
TO PREVENT MANY OF THESE
PROBLEMS.
OUR SPINES HAVE A NATURAL
INWARD CURVE IN OUR NECK AND IN
OUR LOWER BACK.
WHEN SITTING, YOU NEED TO
ENSURE THAT YOU SUPPORT THAT
NATURAL INWARD CURVE IN YOUR
LOWER BACK.
IF YOUR CHAIR DOES NOT PROVIDE
ADEQUATE SUPPORT, THEN YOU NEED
TO ADD SUPPORT.
THIS CAN BE IN THE FORM OF A
LOWER BACK ROLL, WHICH IS A FOAM
CYLINDER.
THAT'S PLACED RIGHT IN THE BACK
AREA.
OR A PORTABLE BACK SUPPORT,
SUCH AS THIS

She shows a small cylindrical pillow and continues
OR EVEN A ROLLED UP TOWEL.
WHEN SITTING IN CHAIR, MAKE
SURE THE SEAT OF THE CHAIR
SUPPORTS YOU FROM YOUR HIPS TO
YOUR KNEES AND THAT YOUR FEET
FLAT ON THE FLOOR.
IF SITTING ON A COMPUTER, YOU
WANT TO SIT APPROXIMATELY AN
ARM'S LENGTH BACK FROM THE
COMPUTER.
AND YOU WANT THE TOP LINE OF
PRINT LEVEL WITH YOUR EYES.
KEEP YOUR HEAD AND YOUR NECK IN
AN UP RIGHT POSITION.
IF YOU FIND YOURSELF POKING
YOUR HEAD FORWARD, THEN YOU
NEED TO ALTER THE POSITION OF
YOUR MONITOR.
TO POSITION YOUR KEYBOARD,
RELAX YOUR SHOULDERS, HAVE YOUR
ARMS BY YOUR SIDE, BEND YOUR
ELBOW TO ABOUT 90 DEGREES, AND
YOUR FOREARMS PARALLEL TO THE
FLOOR.
AND FINALLY, INTERRUPT SITTING.
GET UP EVERY HOUR OR SOONER TO
TAKE A STRETCH BREAK.
STRETCH YOUR ARMS, AND YOUR
HANDS, STRETCH YOUR NECK AND
YOUR BACK AND DON'T FORGET TO
STRETCH YOUR EYES BY LOOKING
AWAY FROM YOUR MONITOR.
