Transcript: Terri Hawkes "Mrs. Finn" | May 17, 1999

A caption against a black background reads "Terri Hawkes a.k.a. 'Sailor Moon'. Actor."

Terri is in her thirties, has short brown hair in a bob, and is wearing a blue blazer over a blue blouse.

She says THE FIRST TEACHER THAT
I REMEMBER SO STRONGLY
WAS MY GRADE 2 AND GRADE 3
TEACHER, Mrs. FINN.
IN PARTICULAR, I REMEMBER
ONE DAY WHERE I WAS DOING
AN ORAL READING IN
FRONT OF THE CLASS,
AND SHE TOOK MY HAND
AND TOOK ME ALL THE WAY
DOWN THE LONG HALL
TO THE GRADE 6 CLASS.
AND STOOD ME UP ON
THE DESK, BECAUSE I
WAS THE SHORTEST STUDENT
IN CLASS, AND SHE ASKED ME
TO READ THIS PIECE
FOR THE GRADE 6s.
I WAS VERY NERVOUS,
BUT I READ IT.
AND IT WENT OKAY.
AND THEY REALLY LIKED
IT, AND THEY VALIDATED
WHAT I DID.
AND IT WAS A WAY OF ME
SHARING MY NEWFOUND KNOWLEDGE
AND THE STORY THAT I WAS
SO FOND OF WITH THESE
OTHER PEOPLE.
SO SHE REALLY, I THINK,
STARTED GIVING ME
A SENSE OF SELF-CONFIDENCE
AND A LOVE OF THE WRITTEN WORD
AND THE SPOKEN WORD.
AND I'M VERY SURE THAT THAT
WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN
LEADING ME TO THE VARIOUS
CAREERS THAT I'VE HAD AS
AN ACTOR, WRITER, DIRECTOR
BECAUSE THESE ARE
OTHER WAYS OF STORYTELLING.

A quote appears against a black background. It reads "Successful teachers are surpassed by their pupils. Anonymous."
