Harumi sits in an office. She’s in her early thirties, with long wavy black hair and bangs. She’s wearing a black pullover with a diamond pattern and a credential around her neck.

Harumi says HI, MY NAME IS HARUMI.
AND I'M A USER INTERFACE
DESIGNER FOR NORTEL NETWORKS.

A caption appears on screen. It reads “Harumi Takeshita. Interface Designer.”

Harumi continues SO A USER INTERFACE
DESIGNER, WE COME FROM
ALL SORTS OF DIFFERENT
BACKGROUNDS.
I COME FROM INDUSTRIAL
ENGINEERING.
MY COLLEAGUES, WE HAVE
ABOUT FIVE OR SIX OF THEM,
THEY COME FROM INDUSTRIAL
DESIGN, HUMAN FACTORS,
COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY.
SO THE PROJECT THAT
I'VE BEEN INVOLVED IN
SINCE I GOT HERE IS
CALLED CALL PILOT.
IT WAS ACTUALLY STARTED AT
LEAST FIVE OR SIX YEARS AGO.
IT'S A WHOLE UNIFIED
MESSAGING PRODUCT.
MOST PEOPLE HAVE VOICE
MESSAGING AT HOME,
BUT CALL PILOT WHICH
IS DESIGNED FOR SMALL
TO MEDIUM BUSINESSES LETS YOU
VIEW ALL OF YOUR VOICE MESSAGES
THROUGH YOUR DESKTOP,
SO IF YOU HAVE A COMPUTER
YOU CAN GET ACCESS
TO YOUR VOICEMAIL.

Harumi points to her computer screen to show a list of Window folders.

Harumi continues AND WHAT IT DOES IS IT'LL
LIST ALL OF YOUR MESSAGES
SO YOU CAN IN A SINGLE GLANCE
GET A SENSE OF HOW MANY
MESSAGES YOU'VE GOT,
WHICH ONES ARE IMPORTANT,
WHICH ONES ARE MARKED URGENT,
HOW LONG EACH MESSAGES ARE.
AND YOU CAN PRIORITIZE
AND LISTEN TO THE ONES
YOU ONLY NEED TO
HEAR RIGHT AWAY.
SO IT'S A REALLY EXCITING TIME
IN THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS
INDUSTRY BECAUSE YOU'VE
GOT THE COMPUTER, YOU'VE GOT
THE TELEPHONE, YOU'VE GOT
THE INTERNET AND INTRANET.
ALL THESE THINGS ARE
STARTING TO MERGE TOGETHER.
THIS IS WHAT CALL
PILOT IS DOING.

A colourful world map appears on the computer screen.

Harumi continues NORTEL NETWORKS HAS
OVER 75,000 PEOPLE
WORKING IN OVER 500 LOCATIONS.
CALL PILOT HAS MORE THAN
200 PEOPLE WORKING
ON THE PROJECT.
BUT IT'S A VIRTUAL TEAM,
WHICH MEANS ALL THE PEOPLE
ARE PHYSICALLY DISPERSED
ACROSS THE GLOBE.
SO NORMALLY WHAT
HAPPENS AT THE BEGINNING
OF THE PROJECT IS MARKETING
AND THE PRODUCT LINE MANAGEMENT
THEY COME UP WITH THE LIST
OF REQUIREMENTS AND FEATURES,
AND I WOULD GET
ASSIGNED TO A FEATURE.
WHAT I HAVE TO DO IS TRANSLATE
IT INTO A SOFTWARE PROGRAM.
I HAVE TO ENVISION WHAT
THE SOFTWARE PROGRAM IS
GOING TO LOOK LIKE, WHAT
FEATURES IT HAS TO SUPPORT,
WHAT BUTTONS, WHAT CONTROLS
ARE GOING TO NEED TO BE
PUT IN PLACE TO
MAKE THAT HAPPEN.
AND I ALSO HAVE TO MAKE IT
EASY TO LEARN, EASY TO USE
FOR THE END USER.

Harumi walks around the office and says SO THIS IS THE LAB.
JUST WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT --
TELEPHONES, SWITCHES,
A LOT OF WIRES, LOTS OF
COMPUTERS, BASICALLY A MESS.
THIS IS WHERE WE DO
MOST OF OUR TESTING.
AND HERE I CAN SHOW YOU
ON THE MONITOR ONE OF
THE SCREENS THAT I WORKED
ON, WHICH IS MAINTENANCE.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT
I CAN DO NOW IS TAKE
THE TELEPHONE AND MAKE SURE
THAT WHEN I'M USING SOMETHING,
WHEN I'M USING THE PHONE,
THAT ONE OF THE CHANNELS
BECOME ACTIVE.

Harumi points to the screen and continues SO YOU CAN SEE THAT
BECAUSE I'M USING THIS PHONE
THIS CHANNEL AND THIS
CHANNEL HAS BECOME ACTIVE,
JUST LIKE THE WAY I DESIGNED.
SO TYPICALLY IF THAT
DIDN'T HAPPEN, OR ONE OF
THESE CHANNELS BECOME FAULTY,
I WOULD WORK WITH THE DESIGNERS
TO GET THE BUG OUT.
BUT THIS IS WHERE I ACTUALLY
COME AND SEE WHAT I'VE DESIGNED,
HOW IT'S ACTUALLY IMPLEMENTED,
AND I CAN PLAY WITH IT
TO MAKE SURE IT'S
WHAT I INTENDED.
I THINK I'M VERY FORTUNATE
TO BE ABLE TO WORK
IN A JOB THAT I LIKE.
I ENJOY WAKING UP EVERY MORNING
AND COMING INTO THE OFFICE.
EVERY DAY THERE'S
SOMETHING NEW TO DESIGN.
I GET TO USE MY TECHNICAL
SKILLS, AS WELL AS WORKING
WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
I WORK WITH OTHER CODE
DESIGNERS, OTHER ENGINEERS,
I WORK WITH THE MARKETING
PEOPLE, I WORK WITH MANAGEMENT
TO BRING IT ALL TOGETHER.
AND FOR USER INTERFACE
DESIGNERS THIS IS A FIELD
THAT'S JUST STARTING TO GROW.
THERE'S A LOT OF
OPPORTUNITIES FOR US.
ESPECIALLY WITH WEB
INTERFACE DESIGN,
WITH THE INTERNET, WITH THE
COMPUTERS BECOMING UBIQUITOUS.
A LOT OF ORDINARY PEOPLE
ARE GOING TO HAVE TO USE
COMPUTERS, AND THAT'S
WHERE WE COME IN AS
USER INTERFACE DESIGNERS.
