Transcript: Exploring Emerging Careers | Mar 31, 1999

The opening slate pops up with a countdown timer from 10 seconds. The slate reads “To log on: Pick up handset, press pound. Key in I.D. number, then pound. Press 1 to confirm. Hang up.”

A title reads “TVO’s Virtual Classroom. Get connected.” The “V” in “Virtual” is a tick, the “A” in “classroom” is an at sign with an extended loop that turns into a power cord with a plug at the end, and the first “O” in “classroom” is a spinning globe.

The opening slate changes to “Exploring Emerging Careers. With Jeff Williams.
Missus UJ appears on screen. She’s in her forties, with shoulder-length curly blond hair. She’s wearing a pastel yellow blazer and a necklace.

(Theme music plays)

Jeff appears on screen. He’s in his thirties and has blond hair. He’s wearing a blue button-up shirt and sits in a studio.

He says HELLO, I'M
JEFF WILLIAMS.
WELCOME TO TV ONTARIO'S
VIRTUAL CLASSROOM.
AND TODAY'S TOPIC:
EXPLORING EMERGING CAREERS.
THE WORK WORLD
IS CHANGING.
IT'S AN
EXCITING TIME.
IT'S A
FASCINATING TIME.
IT CAN ALSO BE SOMEWHAT
OF A TERRIFYING TIME.
SO WHAT WE'VE DONE
IS WE'VE ASSEMBLED
TEN DIFFERENT SEGMENTS.
AND THESE ARE SEGMENTS
CONCERNING DIFFERENT
OCCUPATIONS THAT ARE NOT
NECESSARILY ON WHAT
THEY WOULD CALL THE TOP
TEN HOT OCCUPATIONS
FOR THE FUTURE.
BUT THEY CERTAINLY
FALL UNDER CATEGORIES
THAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED
AREAS OF GROWTH,
FOR AREAS OF WORK YOU
MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER,
CERTAINLY, THEY
HAVE POTENTIAL.
NOW, WITHIN THOSE
OCCUPATIONS,
YOU'RE GOING TO BE
SEEING PEOPLE NOT MUCH
OLDER THAN YOURSELVES,
WHO HAVE GONE THROUGH
DIFFERENT PROGRAMS TO GET
TO WHERE THEY ARE NOW.
AND I'LL MAKE A POINT: NOT
NECESSARILY
THE
PROGRAM
THEY WENT THROUGH IN
COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY
WAS THE TYPE OF OCCUPATION
THEY ENDED UP WITH,
WHICH KIND OF
REINFORCES THE NOTION
THAT WHEN YOU PURSUE POST
SECONDARY EDUCATION,
THE CHOICE THAT YOU MAKE
FOR THAT MAY, IN FACT,
BE SOMETHING THAT GETS
YOU FURTHER AHEAD,
PROVIDES YOU WITH
CERTAIN SKILLS,
BUT YOU MAY
CHANGE YOUR MIND.
AND BECAUSE OF THE WAY THE
WORK WORLD IS CHANGING TODAY,
THAT WORKS OUT TO BE
QUITE ALL RIGHT.
I'LL TELL YOU WHAT YOU
WILL BE LEARNING AT SCHOOL,
AND THAT IS SOME OF
THESE TYPES OF SKILLS.

A cream sheet of paper pops up. The title reads “Important Skills to Have” Beneath it reads “1) Willingness to learn 2) Interpersonal, teamwork 3) Communication: written, verbal 4) Adaptability 5) Computer Skills 6) Analysing skills.”

Jeff continues
YOU'RE LEARNING
THEM NOW.
YOU'LL CONTINUE TO LEARN
THEM OUT IN SUMMER JOBS,
VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE, AND
YOU'LL ALSO CONTINUE
TO BE LEARNING THEM IN YOUR
POST SECONDARY EDUCATION: 1) THE ABILITY TO LEARN AND HAVING THE WILLINGNESS TO LEARN. 2)INTERPERSONAL SKILLS, TEAMWORK SKILLS WHEN YOU WORK ON A GROUP PROJECT. 3) COMMUNICATION SKLLS: BOTH VERBAL WITH ASSIGNMENTS THAT YOU ARE WORKING ON, SOMETIMES YOU THINK BOY, I’VE GOT ALL OF THESE ORAL PRESENTATION IN CLASS WILL EMPLOYERS WILL LOOK FOR.
EMPLOYERS CAN TEACH YOU A LOT
OF THE TECHNICAL SKILLS.
THEY DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO
TEACH YOU THESE SKILLS.
THESE ARE THE SKILLS YOU
LEARN OUT ON YOUR OWN,
EITHER IN WORK
OR IN SCHOOL.
THE ABILITY TO BE
ABLE TO BE FLEXIBLE.
THE WORK WORLD
IS CHANGING,
BUT WE NEED YOU TO BE
ABLE TO BE FLEXIBLE
SO WHEN YOU GO OUT
INTO THE WORK WORLD,
YOU HAVE THINGS CHANGE
WITHIN A COMPANY,
AND THEY NEED YOU TO
DO SOMETHING ELSE,
THEN YOU'RE ABLE TO GO
IN THERE AND PICK UP
THE SKILLS THAT ARE REQUIRED
TO DO THAT TYPE OF WORK.
SO IN FINDING OUT
WHO'S OUT THERE TODAY,
I'M GOING TO ASK A SIMPLE
QUESTION, AND THAT BEING,
HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE
A PRETTY CLEAR IDEA
AS TO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO
FOR YOUR FUTURE CAREER?
AND TO ANSWER THAT, I
INVITE YOU TO PICK UP
YOUR HANDSET AND
PRESS #8 IF YOU- TO RESPOND
TO THAT, THEN HANG
UP YOUR HANDSET.

A hand-written document shows an arrow pointing to a red circle.

Jeff says WE ARE GOING TO BE
LOOKING AT THE DIFFERENT
OCCUPATIONS TODAY THAT
WILL SPARK DIFFERENT
IDEAS FOR YOU.
AND WITHIN SOME
OF THOSE IDEAS,
YOU'RE GOING TO
HAVE YOUR INTUITION,
YOUR SENSES
WORKING FOR YOU,
MEMORIES OF OTHER THINGS
YOU'VE DONE - AGAIN,
VOLUNTEER WORK, PART-TIME
JOBS, OR JUST IDEAS,
YOUR IMAGINATION OF WHAT
YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE DOING.
SOME OF THE DIFFERENT
COURSES YOU'RE LEARNING
AND WHEN YOU ARE
DOING THOSE COURSES,
YOU'RE FINDING,
WOW, THAT MATH,
THAT'S REALLY HOLDING
MY ATTENTION; I LOVE MATH.
ENGLISH, EHHH -
OR VICE VERSA.
SO THINGS THAT COME TO
MIND THAT YOU EITHER
HEAR OR SEE IN THESE
DIFFERENT SEGMENTS,
I'D LIKE YOU TO MAKE
A LIST LIKE THIS.

A clip shows Jeff’s hands on a piece of paper that is divided into Likes and Dislikes. Then it changes to a complete list. Under Like: Help people, teamwork, computers, engineer, fixing problems. Dislike: noisy, work outside. He appears on a small window at the right bottom of the screen.

Jeff says THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT
BECAUSE WHAT IT'S GOING TO DO,
WHEN YOU LEAVE
THIS SHOW TODAY,
YOU ARE GOING TO BE
ABLE TO COME AWAY WITH
A NICE LIST THAT TALKS
ABOUT WHAT YOU LIKE,
WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR,
WHAT WOULD BE IDEAL
FOR YOU, WHAT
YOU DISLIKE.
AND AGAIN, YOU CAN ALSO
PUT ON THE LIKE SIDE WHAT
YOU'RE GOOD AT, WHAT YOU
REMEMBER YOU LIKE TO DO.
I JUST GENERATED A
LITTLE LIST THAT LOOKS
SOMETHING LIKE THIS:
HELPING PEOPLE.
AGAIN, ONCE YOU'VE
WATCHED A SEGMENT.
HELPING PEOPLE,
TEAMWORK, COMPUTERS.
I NOTICED THAT
ENGINEER, YEAH,
I'D LIKE TO BE
AN ENGINEER.
I LIKE THAT ONE.
I'M GOING TO PUT
THAT ONE DOWN.
A COUPLE OF DISLIKES.
SUCH AS A NOISY
WORK ENVIRONMENT.
I DON'T REALLY
WANT THAT.
I'LL PUT THAT DOWN.
I WANT TO REMEMBER THAT
WHEN I'M GOING OUT AND
DECIDING WHAT TYPE OF
JOB I WANT TO GET INTO
AFTER SCHOOL, OR
WHAT TYPE OF PROGRAM
I WANT TO GET INTO TO
LEAD TO THAT TYPE OF JOB.
OKAY, SO IT APPEARS THAT
48 PERCENT OF THE PEOPLE
HAVE AN IDEA AS TO WHAT
YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO
WHEN YOU COMPLETE SCHOOL.
SO THAT CERTAINLY LEAVES
LOTS OF OPPORTUNITY
FOR YOU TO BE LEARNING
AND CLARIFYING FURTHER
WHAT IT IS PRECISELY THAT
YOU WANT TO BE DOING.
AND AGAIN, THERE IS GOING
TO BE A REQUIREMENT
THERE IS ADAPTABILITY
AND FLEXIBILITY,
WHICH KIND OF TAKES
THE PRESSURE OFF.
BECAUSE THERE'S ENOUGH
PRESSURE IN DECIDING WHAT
TO DO AFTER HIGH SCHOOL
WITHOUT THINKING
I'VE GOT TO MAKE
THE RIGHT DECISION.
WHAT IF I CHOOSE
THE WRONG PROGRAM?
NOT TO WORRY.
YOU WILL LEARN A LOT OF THOSE
TEAMWORK SKILLS IN SCHOOL.
YOU WILL LEARN ANALYSING
SKILLS, PROBLEM SOLVING,
THAT WILL HELP YOU
FOR NUMEROUS JOBS
AND NUMEROUS
TYPES OF CAREERS.
AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THE
WILLINGNESS TO LEARN
NEW TECHNICAL SKILLS, THE
EMPLOYERS WILL GLADLY
HIRE YOU SO YOU CAN EXPRESS
YOUR AREAS OF INTEREST
WITHIN A PARTICULAR
ORGANIZATION,
OR PERHAPS YOU WANT
TO BE SELF-EMPLOYED.
SO NOW, TO START, WE'RE
GOING TO GO TO JANE SPENCE.
AND JANE WENT THROUGH
FOR ENGINEERING.
SHE'S A PAINT PROCESS
ENGINEER AT TOYOTA CANADA
IN CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO.
SO LET'S GO TO
JANE NOW.

The caption changes to “Jane Spence. Mechanical Engineer.”

Jane is in her twenties and has blonde curly hair that is pulled back into a ponytail. She wears a blue shirt with the label Jane, glasses with a yellow band at the top and a white shirt underneath.

Jane stands in a factory and behind her is a car that is being serviced.

Jane says THIS IS THE PVC AREA
OF THE PAINT SHOP.
BASICALLY, WHAT PVC
DOES IS IT SEALS
ALL THE UNDERBODY
SEAMS OF THE CAR,
DOES SOME OF THE
RUST PROTECTION,
PREVENTS WATER LEAKS,
AND IS A GENERAL
ROAD NOISE REDUCTION,
WHAT WE USE
FOR ROAD NOISE.
SO WHAT WE'RE DOING HERE
IS THERE ARE ACTUALLY ROBOTS
THAT SPRAY THE
UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR.
AFTERWARDS, TEAM MEMBERS
APPLY THE BEADS.
THEY TAKE A SMALL BRUSH,
AND FIX THE SEAMS,
INSPECT THE CAR, AND MAKE
SURE EVERYTHING IS OKAY.
SO THAT'S BASICALLY
WHAT'S HAPPENING
IN THIS PARTICULAR AREA
OF THE PAINT SHOP.
MY ROLE IN THIS IS
BASICALLY I COORDINATE
WITH MAINTENANCE AND
PRODUCTION IN TRYING
TO IMPROVE THE PROCESSES.

A clip shows cars in an assembly line with robots making changes, then a worker painting the underside of the car. After Jane is shown pointing to a car on the assembly line.

Jane continues SO INITIALLY, ENGINEERING
HELPED SET UP THE PROCESS.
SO WE SET ALL THE
STANDARDISED WORK
OF HOW THEY DO
THEIR WORK.
WE LOOK AT THE ROBOTS,
DECIDE HOW THEY'RE GOING
TO BE TAUGHT, HOW WE CAN
IMPROVE HOW THEY ACTUALLY
APPLY THOSE BEADS, AND
CONTINUALLY WORK ON REDUCING
THE COST OF
DOING THIS PROCESS.
REDUCE HOW MUCH MATERIAL
WE HAVE TO USE,
HOW MUCH WASTE WE
HAVE IN THE PROCESS.
SO THAT'S OUR GENERAL
ROLE IN THIS AREA.
WE'RE CURRENTLY WORKING
ON EVERY TIME THE BEAD
TURNS A CORNER TO REDUCE
THE AMOUNT OF MATERIAL
ON THAT CORNER.
BECAUSE ESSENTIALLY,
YOU'RE OVERLAPPING
THE MATERIAL AND
USING TOO MUCH.
IN THE TEACHING
OF THE ROBOT,
WE'RE ACTUALLY SPEEDING
UP THE ROBOT THROUGH
THAT PROCESS, AND REDUCING
THE FLOW OF MATERIAL.
SO THAT'S SOMETHING WE'RE
WORKING ON CURRENTLY.
ALSO, THE
MATERIAL, ITSELF,
WE'RE WORKING WITH
DIFFERENT KINDS TO TRY
TO IMPROVE HOW IT
GOES ON THE CAR.
SO WHAT VISCOSITY DOES IT
HAVE TO BE THAT'S IDEAL,
AND WHAT SPRAY SPEED
AND WHAT TEMPERATURE
WE SHOULD BE
RUNNING AT.
SO WE'RE TRYING TO
TIGHTEN UP PARAMETERS
AND IMPROVE THE PROCESS.

A clip shows Jane walking in the factory.

Jane says YOU MAY BE WONDERING HOW
I ENDED UP IN A CAREER
IN ENGINEERING.
BASICALLY, IN HIGH SCHOOL,
I WAS ALWAYS INTERESTED
IN MATHS AND SCIENCES.
SO I ENDED UP TAKING THEM
THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL.
AND IT WASN'T UNTIL I WAS
APPLYING FOR UNIVERSITIES
THAT I DECIDED TO
INTO APPLIED SCIENCE.
ORIGINALLY, I WAS THINKING
OF JUST GOING INTO STRAIGHT
SCIENCES, BUT MY
GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR
SUGGESTED THAT I MIGHT
BE MORE INTERESTED
IN THE APPLIED SCIENCES.
SO I CHANGED MY APPLICATION
AND ENDED UP LIKE THAT.
AFTER FOUR YEARS
OF UNIVERSITY,
I WORKED IN MANUFACTURING,
AND I ENDED UP HERE.
SO BASICALLY, THERE
ARE A LOT OF EMERGING
CAREERS IN ENGINEERING.
NEW TECHNOLOGY IS
ALWAYS DEVELOPING.
WE ARE ALWAYS INTERESTED
IN NEW ROBOTICS,
NEW THINGS THAT WILL
IMPROVE OUR PROCESSES.
AND IT'S ALWAYS AN
EXCITING MOVE
TO TRY OUT NEW THINGS.

A clip shows the cream sheet of paper with the title, “Growth Areas.” Underneath it reads, “Information technology, manufacturing, tourism and hospitality, health care, financial planning, communication.” Another cream sheet of paper with the title “Factors,” it reads “Global economy, baby boomers, computer technology.”

Jeff says OKAY, NOW THAT WE'VE
HEARD FROM JANE,
I'M JUST GOING TO
MAKE A POINT HERE.
SOME OF THE AREAS THAT
ARE SUGGESTED TO BE AREAS
OF GROWTH BY MANY OF
THE RESEARCH THAT'S
CONDUCTED BY STATS
CANADA, MANUFACTURING.
SO JANE SPENCE HAS BEEN IN
THE MANUFACTURING SECTOR,
AND THAT'S CERTAINLY
CONSIDERED TO BE AN AREA
OF GROWTH, PARTICULARLY
WITH ROBOTICS,
AS YOU'VE SEEN
BEING USED THERE.
THERE IS ANOTHER
FACTOR IN HERE.
WE HAVE THE GLOBAL ECONOMY
BECOMING VERY, VERY COMPETITIVE.
SO MANUFACTURING
COMPANIES SUCH AS TOYOTA
HAVE TO BE THINKING
ABOUT EFFICIENCY.
SO I'M GOING TO
GO TO A CALL NOW.
OUR FIRST CALLER IS THERE,
SO I'M GOING TO SAY HELLO.
FROM USBORNE.
HELLO, USBORNE.

Female voice says HELLO.

Jeff says HI, THERE.
WHAT'S YOUR QUESTION?

Female voice says I'M WONDERING, ARE YOU
GOING TO SHOW US LIKE
SOME CAREER CHOICES
IN THIS VIDEO?

Jeff says YES.
THANKS VERY MUCH
FOR THAT QUESTION.
THE DIFFERENT SEGMENTS
THAT WE ARE SHOWING
ARE THE IDEAS THAT CAN
INSPIRE YOU TOWARDS
THOSE SPECIFIC CAREERS,
SUCH AS JANE'S
WHERE SHE'S AN ENGINEER.
SHE STUDIED ENGINEERING
AT UNIVERSITY.
YOU CAN ALSO STUDY
ENGINEERING AT COLLEGE.
AND ANY OF THE OTHER
SEGMENTS YOU WILL
BE SEEING WILL DO THE
SAME TYPE OF THING
TO GIVE YOU IDEAS.
GREAT QUESTION.
NEXT WE HAVE SOMEBODY
FROM SOUTHWOOD.
HELLO THERE.
HI THERE FROM
SOUTHWOOD?

Male voice says HELLO?

Jeff repeats HI, WHAT'S YOUR
QUESTION?
OKAY, NEXT CALLER PLEASE
IS FROM SOUTHWOOD.
HI THERE.
FROM USBORNE, HELLO THERE?
HI, YOU HAVE
A QUESTION?

Male voice says NO.

Jeff says OKAY.
WE HAVE ANOTHER
QUESTION.
OKAY, TO CALL IN, I'M
GOING TO JUST GIVE YOU
A FEW QUICK
INSTRUCTIONS HERE.

A panel pops up and next to the title “To Call” There is a handset. Below it reads, “Pick up your handset, press pound 9, put handset down, wait for instructor. To cancel call, press pound then 0.”

Jeff says YOUR GOING TO PICK UP YOUR HANDSET, AND THEN YOUR GOING TO PRESS THE POUND SIGN THEN NINE AND THEN YOUR GOING TO PUT THE HANDSET DOWN AND WAIT FOR THE INSTRUCTOR, OKAY?
SO NOW I’M GOING TO INTRODUCE YOU
TO THE NEXT OCCUPATION.
THAT IS A NETWORK
ANALYST IN THE FIELD
OF TELECOMMUNICATIONS
FOR A COMPANY CALLED
NORTEL NETWORKS.
NORTEL NETWORKS HAS
MOVED INTO THE WORLD
OF INTERNET AND
WEB DEVELOPMENT
AND COMMUNICATIONS
WITH TELEPHONE TO WEB.
AND YOU'LL SEE SOME
VERY INTERESTING
NEW DEVELOPMENTS
THAT DEAN FERNANDES,
THIS NETWORK
ANALYST IS DOING.
SO HERE IS DEAN
FERNANDES.

The caption changes to “Dean Fernandes. Network Analyst.”

Dean is in his thirties and has short brown hair. He wears a blue button-up shirt and sits in a cubicle next to a computer.

Dean says HI, MY NAME IS
DEAN FERNANDES,
AND I'M A
NETWORK ANALYST,
NETWORK ENGINEER FOR
NORTEL NETWORKS.
I STARTED AT NORTEL
IN ABOUT 1988.
I GRADUATED FROM A SALES
AND MARKETING PROGRAM
WITH SHERIDAN COLLEGE.
AND MY FIRST JOB WITH
NORTEL WAS A JUNIOR POSITION
WHERE I WAS RESPONSIBLE
FOR CHANGING PAPER,
AND MAKING SURE
PRINTERS WERE FILLED
WITH INK FOR ONE OF
THE PRODUCTS
THAT NORTEL MANUFACTURED
AT THAT TIME.
IN ORDER TO MOVE UP
THROUGHOUT THE COMPANY,
I TOOK IT UPON MYSELF TO
BE A SELF-STARTER AND READ
TECHNICAL DOCUMENTS,
AND BECOME FAMILIAR
WITH THE PRODUCTS THAT
NORTEL NETWORKS MADE.
AND ALSO, NORTEL NETWORKS
WAS A VERY GOOD COMPANY
IN THE ASPECT THEY GAVE
ME A LOT OF FORMAL TRAINING.
SO I GOT A LOT OF TRAINING
ON THE VOICE PRODUCTS
AND DATA PRODUCTS, AND
TAKING THAT TRAINING,
I WAS ABLE TO ACTUALLY
START DOING SOME NETWORK
ENGINEERING FOR
NORTEL NETWORKS.

A clip shows a computer screen that displays Nortel Networks’ voice and data communications and then the intranet.

Dean continues AS A NETWORK ANALYST,
NETWORK ENGINEER,
PART OF MY ROLE IS TO
LOOK AT THE INDUSTRY TRENDS
THAT ARE ON THE
INTERNET, AND LOOK AT
STANDARDS ON
THE INTERNET.
EVERYONE KNOWS THAT THE
INTERNET IS THE PUBLIC WAY
OF ACCESSING VOICE AND
DATA ACROSS THE WORLD.
AND I TAKE WHAT WE
FIND IN THE INTERNET,
THE STANDARDS, AND
THE TECHNOLOGY,
AND I TRY TO APPLY THEM
WITHIN NORTEL'S INTRANET.
NOW WHAT AN INTRANET IS,
IT'S BASICALLY THE SAME
CONCEPT AS A INTERNET,
BUT IT'S A PRIVATE NETWORK.
SO BECAUSE NORTEL
IS A GLOBAL COMPANY,
AND WE HAVE A PRESENCE
GLOBALLY ACROSS
THE WORLD, WE USE OUR
PRIVATE INTRANET,
SO OUR PRIVATE
NETWORK, TO TRANSFER
OUR VOICE AND DATA.
ONE OF THE SPECIFIC
TECHNOLOGIES THAT
WE'RE LOOKING AT IS
VIDEO CONFERENCING.
BECAUSE NORTEL NETWORKS
IS A GLOBAL COMPANY,
AND WE HAVE PEOPLE IN
MANY COUNTRIES AROUND
THE WORLD, WE NEED A TOOL TO
TALK TO ALL THESE PEOPLE.
SO WHAT WE CAN DO RIGHT
NOW IS I CAN MAKE A CALL
TO DALLAS, TEXAS, WHERE I
HAVE A FRIEND IN DALLAS,
ANDREW, AND WE CAN TALK
ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON
IN THE NETWORK.
AND I'LL MAKE A
CALL RIGHT NOW.
[Ringing]

Dean uses his computer to make a video phone call.

Dean says HI, ANDREW.

Andrew says MORNING, DEAN.
HOW ARE YOU? I'M PRETTY GOOD.

Dean says WHAT'S THE WEATHER
LIKE IN DALLAS TODAY?

Andrew says IT'S EXTREMELY
HOT AND DRY.

A clip shows Andrew on the video call in Dallas. Then changes to Dean working on a machine and later in a room with a white board and a work colleague.

Dean says SO WHAT WE'RE DOING HERE
IS I CAN TALK TO ANDREW
IN DALLAS, AND WE CAN
TALK ABOUT SPECIFIC
PROJECTS HE'S DOING,
AND SPECIFIC PROJECTS
THAT I HAVE.
SO AS YOU CAN SEE ON
A VIDEO CALL TODAY,
IT'S NOT REALLY
REAL LIFE.
YOU CAN SEE HIM MOVE,
BUT YOU CAN SEE
IT'S VIDEO CONFERENCING
BECAUSE WHEN HE MOVES,
EXACTLY LIKE ANDREW DID,
IT'S A LITTLE BIT JERKY.
WHAT OUR JOB IS TO IMPROVE
THE VIDEO QUALITY,
AND IMPROVE THE NETWORK,
SO IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE
ACTUALLY TALKING TO
ANDREW FACE TO FACE.
SO WHEN HE SPEAKS AND HE
MOVES, IT'S REAL LIFE.
AND YOU SEE WHEN
ANDREW WAS DRINKING,
IT IS A LITTLE JERKY.
SO BY TAKING THE
INFORMATION WE FIND
IN THE INTERNET, AND SOME
OF THE NEW STANDARDS
COMING OUT, WE BRING
IT INTO THE INTRANET,
SO WE CAN IMPROVE
VIDEO CONFERENCING
SO WE CAN ACTUALLY
TALK A LOT BETTER,
AND OUR JOB WILL BE
A LOT EASIER TO DO.
ALTHOUGH MY SCHOOLING AT
SHERIDAN COLLEGE FOR SALES
AND MARKETING DIDN'T
REALLY PREPARE ME
FOR THE TECHNICAL
PART OF THE JOB,
IT DID GIVE ME ASPECTS OF
THE JOB THAT I REALLY NEED.
THEY WERE
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS;
THEY SHOWED ME HOW
TO WORK IN A TEAM.
IT GAVE ME SOME ANALYTICAL
AND PROBLEM SOLVING.
SO TAKING THAT, AND THE
FORMAL SCHOOLING
THAT NORTEL GAVE ME, IT
ALLOWED ME TO PROGRESS UP
THROUGH NORTEL, AND REALLY
WORK ON THE NETWORK
ENGINEERING, AND NETWORK
ANALYST JOB THAT I HAVE TODAY.

The sheet of paper appears with the likes and dislikes list and a small window at the bottom right of the screen with Jeff.

Jeff says OKAY, SO YOU CAN SEE
WITH DEAN FERNANDES,
THE NETWORK ANALYST
WORK HE DOES
INVOLVES VERY MANY
INTERESTING ELEMENTS.
THE VIDEO CONFERENCING
THAT HE'S BEEN WORKING ON
IMPROVING WITH HIS
JOB, AS YOU CAN SEE,
KIND OF EXCITING.
SO I'M JUST GOING TO
INVITE YOU TO HAVE A LOOK
AT THE LIKES,
DISLIKES LIST,
THAT YOU'RE MAKING
A POINT OF ADDING.
IF YOU LIKE THE
NETWORK ANALYST JOB,
WRITE IT DOWN.
IF YOU LIKE THE IDEA OF
WORKING ON COMPUTERS
A LOT, WRITE IT DOWN.
AND IF YOU SAY I REALLY
DON'T WANT TO WORK ON
COMPUTERS A LOT, WRITE THAT
DOWN ON THE DISLIKE SIDE.
ANYTHING YOU NOTICE IN
THESE SEGMENTS THAT YOU
FEEL IS RIGHT FOR YOU,
OR NOT RIGHT FOR YOU,
MAKE A POINT OF
JOTTING THAT DOWN.
THAT WILL HELP YOU WITH
DECIDING YOUR FUTURE.
SO WE'RE GOING TO GO
TO A QUESTION NOW.
WE HAVE SOMEBODY
FROM HOMELAND.
HELLO THERE.
Female voices says HELLO.
THIS IS RENA.

Jeff says HI.

Rena says HI.
WHAT KIND OF A JOB WOULD
YOU RECOMMEND TO PEOPLE
WHO LIKE TO HELP
OTHER PEOPLE?

Jeff says AND WHICH WAYS DO YOU LIKE TO HELP -YOU LIKE TO HELP
OTHER PEOPLE?
WHAT KIND OF WAYS DO YOU
LIKE TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE?
OR COULD YOU IMAGINE
YOURSELF WORKING?

Rena says IF THEY'RE SICK OR
THEY HAVE PROBLEMS?

The sheet of paper titled “Growth Areas” appears.

Jeff says OKAY, GREAT.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
THE WHOLE AREA OF HEALTHCARE
IS A REAL GROWING AREA,
AND THAT'S SOMETHING
TO BE CONSIDERING.
I'LL JUST BRING
THAT UP THERE.

Jeff says HEALTHCARE IS ONE OF THE
TOP AND GROWING AREAS,
PARTICULARLY WITH ALL THE
PEOPLE GETTING OLDER,
WHAT THEY CALL
BABY BOOMERS,
PEOPLE BETWEEN THE
AGES OF 35 AND 55,
AS THEY GET
OLDER AND OLDER,
THEY'RE GOING TO NEED
LOTS OF HELP IN TERMS
OF CONTINUING ON
LIVING A HEALTHY LIFE.
SO IF YOU WANT TO LOOK
INTO THE HEALTHCARE AREA,
YOU MIGHT CONSIDER
AREAS SUCH AS NURSING
OR HOME HEALTHCARE.
YOU CAN READ ABOUT THAT.
WE WILL GIVE YOU SOME MORE
INFORMATION ABOUT
WHERE YOU CAN FIND INFORMATION
ABOUT THE HEALTHCARE AREA
AT THE END OF THE
SESSION TODAY.
OKAY, WE HAVE SOMEBODY
FROM ST. PATRICK'S.
HELLO THERE
DOWN IN SARNIA.

Female voice says HI.

Jeff says HI.

Female voice says I WAS WONDERING, WHAT
KIND OF COURSES SHOULD
YOU TAKE TO GET INTO
THE ENGINEERING?

Jeff says ENGINEERING, OKAY
SO ARE YOU REFERRING
NOW TO PLANNING WITH
YOUR HIGH SCHOOL
COURSES YOURSELF?

Female voice says NO, NO.
WHEN YOU GO OFF
TO UNIVERSITY.
FOR THE LAST CAREER YOU
DID, WHAT KIND OF COURSES
SHOULD YOU BE TAKING?

Jeff says OKAY, SO WHEN YOU GO
OFF TO UNIVERSITY, YOU’RE GOING TO BE OBVIOUSLY
WITH ENGINEERING, YOU'RE
GOING TO BE TAKING A LOT
OF MATHS AND SCIENCES
AND COMPUTER COURSES.
AND ONE OF THE THINGS
YOU MIGHT WANT TO DO
IS START, PERHAPS, LOOKING
AT SOME OF THE CALENDARS
THAT WILL BE AVAILABLE
IN YOUR GUIDANCE OFFICE.
AND THOSE CALENDARS WILL
OUTLINE THE SPECIFIC COURSES
THAT YOU'LL TAKE WHEN YOU
GO INTO ENGINEERING.
AND THAT WILL GIVE
YOU A CLEARER IDEA.
ALSO, ALWAYS FEEL
FREE TO SURF THE NET,
WHERE YOU CAN
GET INFORMATION.
I'LL COME BACK TO THAT
AT THE END OF THE SHOW.
AND IN ADDITION, CALL
A SCHOOL LIKE WESTERN.
ASK TO SPEAK TO SOMEBODY
IN THEIR COUNSELLING SERVICES. OKAY?
NOW WE HAVE SOMEBODY
FROM USBORNE.
CAN WE HAVE YOUR
QUESTION, PLEASE?
HELLO.

Male voice says HI,
WHAT'S YOUR QUESTION?

Male voice WHAT OTHER ENGINEERING
JOBS ARE THERE?

Jeff says OKAY, SO IN ENGINEERING,
IT COMES INTO A NUMBER
OF DIFFERENT AREAS.
YOU HAVE ELECTRICAL
ENGINEERING,
YOU HAVE MECHANICAL
ENGINEERING.
AND THE DIFFERENT TYPES
OF ENGINEERING
DEPENDS ON WHAT KIND
INTERESTS YOU.
SO IF YOU HAVE A LOOK AT
SOME OF THE CALENDARS,
IN OTHER WORDS,
BOOKS BY, SAY,
WESTERN OR UNIVERSITY
OF TORONTO OR GUELPH,
OR MCMASTER, LOOK AT
THEIR ENGINEERING PROGRAMS,
AND YOU'LL
BE ABLE TO SEE,
THERE'S CHEMICAL
ENGINEERING,
COMPUTER SCIENCES
ENGINEERING.
SO THOSE ARE SOME
OF THE AREAS.
AND THEY WILL GO INTO GREATER
DETAILS IN THOSE BOOKS.
GREAT QUESTION.
OKAY, NOW, WE'RE GOING TO
GO TO TIM LUKIAN WHO IS
A GRAPHICS DESIGNER,
WORKING IN THE WHOLE FIELD
OF WEB DEVELOPMENT.
AND YOU'LL SEE SOME
VERY INTERESTING USE
OF CREATIVITY COMBINED WITH
COMPUTERS WITH TIM'S JOB.
SO HERE IS TIM LUKIAN.

The caption changes to “Tim Lukian. Graphics Designer.”

Tim appears on screen at his desk. He is in his twenties, has a short beard, and has brown short hair. He wears a blue shirt, a necklace and tennis shoes.

He says HOW ARE YOU DOING?
I'M TIM LUKIAN.
I'M A GRAPHICS DESIGNER
OVER AT THE MODEM MEDIA
POPPE TYSON CANADA.
AND THAT, INCIDENTALLY,
IS ALSO MY JOB TITLE.
I'M A GRAPHIC
DESIGNER BY TRADE.
A LOT OF WHAT I STUDIED AT
THE ACADEMY OF DESIGN
WAS REALLY RELATED TO
HOW TO CONVEY IDEAS AND
HOW TO CONVEY INFORMATION,
AND HOW TO JUST BASICALLY
TALK TO PEOPLE USING
VARIOUS DIFFERENT MEDIUMS,
ONE OF WHICH WAS
THE INTERNET.
A LOT OF THE OTHER
SKILLS THAT WERE HEAVILY
TECHNOLOGICALLY RELATED.
THERE'S A LOT OF HIGH
LEVEL COMPUTER SKILLS
THAT YOU'VE GOT TO SORT
OF LEARN TO BE ABLE
TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY
IN THE DIGITAL REALM.

A clip shows several computers in an office with graphic designers, then changes to a board room with a white board, computer screen and a white poster, as well as a long table with several graphic designers, some of them with toy light savers in their hands. Then a collie dog is shown running around the board room.

Tim says IT'S ACTUALLY REALLY INTERESTING
WORKING IN THIS SORT OF
A TEAM ENVIRONMENT WHEN
PROJECTS DO COME ACROSS.
IT'S A LOT DIFFERENT
FROM IF I WAS WORKING
INDEPENDENTLY, I'D
PROBABLY END UP
SPEARHEADING THE PROJECT
FROM START TO FINISH;
WHEREAS IN THIS
ENVIRONMENT,
ONE A PROJECT
COMES ACROSS,
IT USUALLY GOES THROUGH
DIFFERENT LEVELS
AND DIFFERENT GROUPS THAT
PERFORM DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS.
ONE OF THE MOST RECENT
SITES THAT WE'VE HAD
THE PRIVILEGE OF WORKING
ON HAS BEEN FOR CP HOTELS,
CANADIAN PACIFIC HOTELS.
NOW, THE SORT OF PROCESS THAT
WOULD HAPPEN IS ORIGINALLY,
THE CLIENT WOULD END UP
COMING TO THE COMPANY
AND TALKING TO
SOMEONE AND SAYING,
THESE ARE OUR NEEDS.
THIS IS WHAT WE'D
LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH.
AND FROM THERE, A BIG
COLLABORATIVE WOULD FORM
IN THE COMPANY THAT
WOULD SORT OF DECIDE
HOW WE COULD BEST
SERVE THOSE NEEDS.
AND AFTER WE
FIGURED THAT OUT,
IT WOULD COME TO THE
CREATIVE DEPARTMENT,
WHICH IS ME, AND I GUESS MY
SUPERVISORS,
THE CREATIVE DIRECTORS,
SENIOR ART DIRECTORS,
AND MYSELF, THE GRAPHIC
DESIGNER, AND WE WOULD,
AS A GROUP, DEVELOP A
VISUAL REPRESENTATION
OF HOW WE WOULD LIKE TO
ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS.

A clip shows a computer screen that shows a website as Tim points to several graphics on the screen then it changes to a graphic designer editor of the website.

Tim continues WHEN YOU'RE SETTING OUT
TO BUILD A GOOD WEBSITE,
THERE ARE A LOT OF
CONSIDERATIONS
FOR THE CLIENT AND
FOR THE END CONSUMER.
YOU HAVE TO THINK A LOT
ABOUT HOW INTUITIVE
THE NAVIGATION IS.
ARE THEY GOING TO
UNDERSTAND WHAT
THEY'RE LOOKING AT?
ARE THEY GOING TO BE
ABLE TO FIND OUT
HOW THEY'RE GETTING TO
WHERE THEY'RE GOING?
CAN THEY READ THE TYPE YOU
ARE USING TO ILLUSTRATE THAT?
FOR THE ACTUAL CLIENT
THAT'S SOLICITING
THE WORK FROM YOU, WHAT'S
IMPORTANT TO THEM
IS THE BRANDING JUST SO
YOU'RE DEVELOPING BRAND
RECOGNITION FOR THEM.
SOMEONE IS GOING TO SEE
THEIR BRAND ON THE NET AGAIN,
AND THEY'RE
GOING TO SAY, OH,
I HAD A GOOD EXPERIENCE
WITH THEIR PRODUCT
BEFORE, THEIR
PRODUCT OR SERVICE.
A LOT OF WHAT MY ROLE IS,
AFTER ALL IS SAID AND DONE
IN TERMS OF THE CREATIVE
AND STRATEGIC PROCESS
IS MAKING SURE THESE
GRAPHICS COME TO LIFE,
AND ACTUALLY WORK TOGETHER TO
FORM THE GREATER WHOLE.
SO A LOT OF WHAT YOU'RE
LOOKING AT RIGHT HERE
WAS HOURS UPON HOURS
OF SORT OF TEDIOUS,
REALLY SPECIFIC LABOUR.
THESE ALL HERE, EVERY ONE
OF THESE LITTLE ROLLOVERS,
AND THE PICTURES THAT
ARE SWAPPING OUT
DOWN HERE ARE A
SEPARATE GRAPHIC
THAT TAKES A LOT OF
PAINSTAKING DESIGN
AND CONSIDERATION TO GET
THEM DOWN, BOTH IN SIZE,
AND TO MAKE THEM
VISUALLY IMPACTFUL.
SEVEN YEARS AGO, THIS
JOB DIDN'T EVEN EXIST.
WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL,
I NEVER WOULD HAVE EVEN
HAD A CLUE THIS IS WHERE
I WOULD HAVE ENDED UP.
FOR SOMEONE WHO IS
CREATIVE, AND SOMEONE
WHO LIKES TO PLAY
WITH COMMUNICATION,
AND PLAY WITH IDEAS
AND TALK TO PEOPLE,
THIS IS A GREAT PLACE
TO BE BECAUSE
IT EMBRACES ALL OF IT.

Jeff says YOU CAN SEE THAT TIM HAS A
VERY EXCITING CAREER
AS A GRAPHICS DESIGNER
INCORPORATING CREATIVITY
WITH THE USE OF
COMPUTER SOFTWARE
HE HAD TO LEARN
IN HIS SCHOOLING.
SO NOW WE'RE GOING TO GO
TO SOME MORE QUESTIONS.
WE HAVE ANOTHER CALLER
FROM FLAMBOROUGH.
SO HELLO THERE,
FLAMBOROUGH.
Female voice HELLO?
Jeff says HI.
YOU HAVE A QUESTION.

Female voice continues YES, HOW HARD IS IT TO GET
A GOOD PAYING JOB
IN THE WORKING WORLD
TODAY THAT YOU LIKE?

Jeff says OKAY, NOW, THAT'S
A GOOD QUESTION.
THANKS VERY MUCH
FOR THAT.
A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE
CONCERNED WITH MONEY TODAY.
AND IT'S ESSENTIAL THAT
YOU DO THINK ABOUT THAT.
NOW, WHAT'S PROBABLY
WILL EASE THE PRESSURE
FOR YOURSELF IS GOING BACK
AND FOCUSSING ON WHAT
YOU LIKE TO DO FIRST,
AND KEEPING IN MIND YOU
WANT A JOB THAT PAYS MONEY,
THAT PAYS GOOD MONEY,
THERE ARE LOTS OF
OPPORTUNITIES FOR
MAKING LOTS OF
MONEY OUT THERE.
SO TAKE THE TIME TO
FOCUS ON WHAT, AGAIN,
I'LL REFER YOU BACK
TO THIS LIST
THAT WE'RE MAKING NOW.
AS YOU'RE WATCHING THESE
SEGMENTS AND YOU'RE
WRITING WHAT YOUR LIKES
AND DISLIKES ARE,
YOU CAN CREATE A SENSE OF
WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE
TO BE DOING WITH YOUR
JOB, WHAT STRENGTHS,
WHAT YOU REALLY LIKE.
YOU REALLY LIKE
DESIGNING THINGS.
YOU REALLY LIKE
WORKING WITH NUMBERS.
THOSE ARE SOME OF
YOUR STRENGTHS.
WITH THOSE STRENGTHS,
YOU CAN GO OUT
IN THE WORK WORLD AND FIND
OPPORTUNITIES THAT WILL
PAY YOU THE KIND OF MONEY
THAT YOU'D LIKE TO MAKE.
OKAY, WE HAVE ANOTHER
CALLER FROM HOMELAND.
HELLO THERE.

Female voice says OKAY, HELLO.

Jeff says HI.

Female voice continues I JUST WANTED TO ASK,
WHAT ARE REALLY
GOOD UNIVERSITIES?
EVEN THOUGH I'M
STILL IN GRADE 7,
I'M WONDERING WHAT ARE SOME
REALLY GOOD UNIVERSITIES
FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE
INTERESTED IN TECHNOLOGY?

Jeff says OKAY NOW, IN TERMS OF- THANKS VERY MUCH
FOR THAT QUESTION.
IN TERMS OF TECHNOLOGY,
EVERY UNIVERSITY
WILL HAVE THEIR KIND
OF AREA OF SPECIALTY.
BUT IN GENERAL, THEY
WILL HAVE ALL AREAS,
MORE AND MORE, PARTICULARLY
WITH UNIVERSITY,
THEY'RE FOCUSSING ON
TECHNOLOGY TYPES OF TRAINING
BECAUSE THERE IS CERTAINLY
A SHORTAGE IN CANADA
FOR PEOPLE WITH THAT
TYPE OF EXPERTISE.
SOME OF IT, OF
YOUR CHOICE,
WILL HAVE TO DO WITH
HOW FAR AWAY FROM
YOUR HOMETOWN YOU WANT
TO GO AWAY TO SCHOOL.
YOU CAN MAKE USE OF SOME
OF THE RESOURCES
THAT ARE OUT THERE.
MACLEANS MAGAZINE,
FOR EXAMPLE,
RIGHT NOW HAS AN ISSUE
OUT THAT TALKS ABOUT
THE DIFFERENT UNIVERSITIES,
AND DISCUSSES
THEIR AREAS OF SPECIALTY.
IT'S A SPECIAL
ISSUE THAT'S OUT.
IT'S ON THE RACK
NOW, IN THE STORES,
AND YOU MIGHT WANT TO
HAVE A LOOK AT THAT.
OKAY, SO NEXT QUESTION
IS FROM USBORNE.
HELLO THERE, USBORNE.
Male voice says HI.
I'M REALLY INTERESTED
IN COMPUTER ANIMATION
AND GRAPHICKING.
AND I WAS WONDERING,
WHAT KIND OF COURSES
WOULD I HAVE TO TAKE TO
GET INTO SHERIDAN COLLEGE
IN TORONTO, AND TO GET A
DECENT JOB LIKE THAT?

Jeff says OKAY, SHERIDAN COLLEGE CERTAINLY
HAS A VERY POPULAR PROGRAM
WITH THEIR
ANIMATION PROGRAM.
INCIDENTALLY, I LEARNED
THAT SENECA ALSO
HAS A VERY
POPULAR PROGRAM.
YOU JUST DON'T HEAR ABOUT
IT QUITE AS MUCH AT
THIS POINT AS YOU
DO SHERIDAN.
NOW, SOME OF THE QUESTIONS
THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE
CONCERNING YOUR FUTURES
AS IT PERTAINS TO WHAT
COURSES YOU SHOULD
TAKE IN HIGH SCHOOL,
I ALWAYS SAY THE BEST
PLACE TO GO IS TWO PLACES:
ONE, YOUR GUIDANCE
COUNSELLOR, AND SECOND,
CALL SHERIDAN THEMSELVES,
AND ASK THEM SPECIFICALLY
WHAT TYPES OF COURSES
SHOULD I BE TAKING NOW
TO PREPARE ME FOR THAT TYPE
OF COURSE AT YOUR SCHOOL?
OKAY, SO NOW, WE ARE GOING
TO GO TO WAYNE BEATON.
AND WAYNE BEATON HAS
CHOSEN A CAREER
THAT INVOLVES HELPING
THE ENVIRONMENT.
THROUGH HIS OWN
EXPLORATION TRYING OUT
DIFFERENT JOBS, HE'S
COME TO THE CONCLUSION
HE WANTED TO STUDY FURTHER
ABOUT DIFFERENT WAYS,
DIFFERENT SCIENCES
THAT HELP HIM DEAL
WITH IMPROVING SITUATIONS
WITH THE ENVIRONMENT.
SO NOW WE ARE GOING
TO GO TO WAYNE BEATON.

The caption changes to “Wayne Beaton. Terrain and Water Resources.”

Wayne appears, he stands in a greenhouse. Wayne is in his thirties and has short blond hair. He wears a pink button-up shirt and a black, blue and orange tie.

Wayne says HI, MY NAME'S
WAYNE BEATON.
I'M IN THE TERRAIN and WATER
TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM.
I'M HERE BECAUSE
I'M INTERESTED
IN THE ENVIRONMENT
AND ECOLOGY.
WHEN I WAS IN HIGH
SCHOOL, I DIDN'T SEEM
TO WANT TO DO ANYTHING ELSE
BUT HAVE FUN AND PARTY.
I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I
WANTED TO DO AFTER THAT.
SO, I TRAVELLED FOR
A NUMBER OF YEARS.
I DID ALL SORTS OF JOBS.
I'VE WORKED SELLING MAGAZINE
SUBSCRIPTIONS DOOR TO DOOR,
I'VE FARMED; I
DID EVERYTHING.
THEN ONE TIME I GOT A
JOB IN A PROVINCIAL PARK
AND I THOUGHT, I COULD
ACTUALLY WORK OUTSIDE
IN THE ENVIRONMENT,
AND I CAN HELP PEOPLE
IN THE ENVIRONMENT
DOING THIS.
AND I THOUGHT I CAN COME TO
SIR SANFORD FLEMING COLLEGE.
AND I CAN TAKE FISHERIES
AND WILDLIFE BIOLOGY.
WELL, WHEN I GOT
HERE I QUICKLY REALIZED
IT WASN'T QUITE THE
AREA I WANTED TO BE IN.
I WANTED TO MAKE MORE OF A
DIFFERENCE IN THE ENVIRONMENT.
I WANTED TO BE INVOLVED
WITH RESTORATION
AND RESOURCES AND HOW WE
CAN WISELY USE THOSE.
ONE OF THESE PROJECTS WAS
A POND HERE ON CAMPUS.
WHAT WE TRIED TO DO
WAS RECONSTRUCT A POND
SO IT WOULD BE
BETTER FOR WILDLIFE,
JUST TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF
SPECIES WE COULD HAVE THERE,
AND SO THAT WE COULD
SEE A REAL DIFFERENCE
INSTEAD OF JUST HAVING
THIS BIG HOLE ON CAMPUS.

A clip shows Wayne with his seedlings in several miniature pots.

Wayne says WELL ONE OF THE THINGS
WE'VE DONE WITH THAT
IS WE'VE RECONSTRUCTED
ALL THE SHORELINES
AND CREATED WHAT WE
CALL A REPAIRIENT ZONE.
SO, WE'VE TAKEN
THESE STEM CUTTINGS;
WE'VE PLANTED
THEM IN THE SOIL.
WE'VE COVERED THEM UP SO THAT
NO LIGHT CAN GET AT THEM.
THEY START TO ROOT IN
THESE LITTLE POTS,
AND AFTER THAT WE
TAKE THE COVER OFF,
WE ADD A LITTLE
BIT OF WATER,
WE LET THE LIGHT GET TO IT,
AND THEY START TO GROW.
AND THEY BECOME EXACT
CLONES OF THE PARENT TREE.
WHAT WE'RE GOING
TO USE THESE FOR
IS WE'RE GOING TO PLANT
THEM ALL AROUND THE POND
THAT WE'VE RECONSTRUCTED.
THIS CREATES WHAT WE
CALL A REPAIRIENT ZONE.
IT BENEFITS WILDLIFE
BY ADDING HABITAT.
THIS IS THE SORT
OF THING WE LEARN
HERE IN TERRAIN and WATER,
AND IT'S PART OF WHAT WE CALL
LAND RECLAMATION, WHICH IS
BASICALLY RESTORING SITES
THAT HAVE BEEN ALTERED
FROM MINING OR FORESTRY
OR HAZARDOUS SPILLS OR EVEN
SOMETIMES WHEN THERE'S
AN INDUSTRY THAT'S CLOSED
DOWN AND THEY WANT TO CHANGE
IT TO A MORE NATURAL AREA;
MAYBE IT'S ON THE SIDE
OF A RIVER OR ON A LAKE.
A LOT OF PLACES
ON LAKE ONTARIO,
THEY'RE RESTORING
MARSHES AND WETLANDS,
BECAUSE WE NOW REALISE HOW
IMPORTANT THEY REALLY ARE
IN THE NATURAL
ENVIRONMENT.
IN FIVE WEEKS I'LL
BE GRADUATED FROM
THE TERRAIN and WATER PROGRAM,
AT WHICH TIME I'LL DO
A TWO-WEEK PLACEMENT
DOWN AT THE TORONTO REGENT
CONSERVATION AUTHORITY,
WHERE I'LL WORK WITH
DOING STREAM REHAB
AND WORKING WITH AQUATIC
SITES AS WELL AS WORKING WITH
ANOTHER SOLAR ECOLOGY WASTE
WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM.
AFTER THAT I'D LIKE TO GET
INVOLVED WITH LAND RESTORATION,
ECOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT AND
TRY TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC
AS TO HOW WE CAN
USE OUR RESOURCES
TO THE BEST OF
OUR ABILITIES
WITHOUT DESTROYING
THE ENVIRONMENT.

Jeff says OKAY, WE'VE
HEARD FROM WAYNE,
AND HIS CONCERN
FOR THE ENVIRONMENT,
AND HOW HE'S GOING ABOUT
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
IN A WAY THAT'S GOING TO
SATISFY HIS OWN NEEDS.
SO AGAIN, I'M GOING TO
REINFORCE THE NOTION
THAT AS YOU'RE LOOKING
AT THESE SEGMENTS,
AND YOU'RE THINKING
ABOUT YOUR CAREERS AND
WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IN
YOUR WORLD OF WORK,
YOU THINK ABOUT WHAT YOUR
LIKES AND DISLIKES ARE,
AND CONTINUE TO LOOK AT
DEVELOPING THAT LIST.
ANYTHING THAT JUST KIND
OF JUMPS OUT AT YOU,
COMES TO MIND, JOT
THOSE THINGS DOWN.
OKAY, SO WE HAVE A
QUESTION FROM FLAMBOROUGH.
I'M INTERESTED IN
KNOWING WHAT SOME OF
YOUR LIKES AND
DISLIKES ARE, AS WELL,
IN TERMS OF THE SEGMENTS
THAT YOU'RE SEEING.

Male voice says WHAT AGE DO YOU HAVE TO
BE TO START A REAL JOB,
LIKE A FIREMAN OR
A POLICE OFFICER?

Jeff says OKAY.
WHAT WOULD BE SOME
OF YOUR LIKES
ABOUT DOING THAT
TYPE OF WORK?

Male voice says HEY?

Jeff says HI, WHAT DO YOU THINK
YOU WOULD LIKE ABOUT
BEING A FIREMAN?
IS IT THE EXCITEMENT?
THE ADVENTURE?

Male voice says PARDON?

Jeff says WOULD THE EXCITEMENT AND
ADVENTURE BE INTERESTING
FOR YOU, IN TERMS OF
BEING A FIREMAN OR POLICEMAN?

Male voice Umm,YEAH.
Jeff says YEAH.
SO IN TIME, YOU'RE GOING
TO BE ABLE TO EXPLORE FURTHER.
GENERALLY SPEAKING, THOSE
KIND OF OCCUPATIONS
REQUIRE THAT YOU
HAVE YOUR GRADE 12.
SO NOW IN TERMS OF AGE,
YOU'RE LOOKING AT 18, 19.
AND YOU CAN CALL YOUR
LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT,
CALL YOUR LOCAL POLICE
DEPARTMENT TO SEE HOW OLD
YOU HAVE TO BE TO DO THOSE
KINDS OF OCCUPATIONS.
AND THEY'RE ONLY
TOO GLAD TO TELL YOU.
OKAY, USBORNE, WE HAVE
A QUESTION FROM YOU.
HELLO, THERE.

Female voice says HELLO.
I WAS WONDERING ABOUT HOW
MANY YEARS OF UNIVERSITY
WOULD YOU HAVE TO TAKE
FOR A JOB LIKE TEACHING
IN THE FUTURE?

Jeff says OKAY A JOB LIKE TEACHING.
WELL, YOU'RE GOING TO
HAVE A THREE-YEAR DEGREE
IN WHATEVER AREA
OF SPECIALTY
YOU'RE GOING TO GO INTO.
MAYBE YOU WANT TO WORK IN AN
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAM,
SO THAT WILL
TAKE THREE YEARS,
PLUS ANOTHER YEAR OF
TEACHER'S COLLEGE,
WHICH IS ANOTHER
YEAR OF UNIVERSITY.
SO THERE'S FOUR YEARS.
SOME PEOPLE MIGHT WANT
TO TEACH IN HIGH SCHOOLS,
WHERE YOU'RE GOING
TO GO TO FOUR YEARS
OF UNIVERSITY, PLUS ANOTHER
YEAR OF TEACHER'S COLLEGE, OKAY?
WE HAVE ANOTHER CALLER.
WE HAVE SOMEBODY
FROM HOMELANDS.
HELLO, THERE.OKAY. SO
AS YOU CAN SEE, THERE ARE
LOTS OF LITTLE DETAIL QUESTIONS
THAT ARE VERY IMPORTANT.
SOME OF THE QUESTIONS THAT
I'M GOING TO PROBABLY
DIRECT YOU TO ARE THE
RESOURCES TO EXPLORE FURTHER,
SO THIS WILL HELP YOU
FIND OUT AND IDENTIFY,
AND GIVE YOU IDEAS ABOUT
WHAT YOU WANT TO DO,
AND THEN YOU'LL GO
AFTER THE SHOW AND
START TO DO SOME OF THAT FUN
EXPLORATION ON YOUR OWN.
OKAY, HELLO THERE.
Female voice says HI.
Jeff says HI, HOMELANDS, CAN
I HEAR YOUR QUESTION?

Female voice says OKAY.
I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS.
HOW DID YOU GET
INTO THIS JOB?
AND DID YOU COME UP WITH THE
IDEA OF THE VIRTUAL CLASSROOM?

Jeff says THE SECOND QUESTION,
NO, IT WASN'T MY IDEA,
THE VIRTUAL CLASSROOM.
BUT I THINK IT'S A
WONDERFUL WAY TO INTERACT
WITH STUDENTS AND
COMMUNICATE IDEAS
ON INFORMATION
SUCH AS THIS.
AND WITH REGARD TO
YOUR FIRST QUESTION,
I DID A LOT OF VOLUNTEER
WORK IN COMMUNITY TV.
AND I REALLY REINFORCED THE
IDEA OF DOING VOLUNTEER WORK.
BECAUSE IT IS THERE
YOU CAN DEVELOP
A LOT OF
DIFFERENT SKILLS.
SO I HOSTED SHOWS THAT
ARE SIMILAR TO THIS
AT ROGERS TV 10.
AND THAT GAVE ME A LOT
OF EXPERIENCE THAT HAS
LED TO FURTHER
EXPERIENCES, PROFESSIONAL,
WHERE I'M GETTING
PAID TO BE ON TV.
SO HOPEFULLY THAT
ANSWERS SOME OF THAT.
SO NOW, WE'RE GOING TO GO
TO ALEJANDRA ENRIQUEZ.
ALEJANDRA IS STUDYING
BAKERY AND PASTRY ARTS
AT GEORGE BROWN COLLEGE.
IT'S AN APPRENTICESHIP
PROGRAM,
WHICH IS AN
AREA OF SKILL,
AND ALSO AN AREA YOU
CAN GET TRAINING FOR
THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE
COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY.
IT'S MORE ON THE JOB.
IN THIS CASE, SHE'S
GETTING AN APPRENTICESHIP
AND SHE IS
GOING TO SCHOOL.
SO IT'S A KIND OF DUAL
THING IN THAT WAY.
SO NOW, LET'S
GO TO ALEJANDRA.

A caption appears it reads “Alejandra Enriquez. Baking and Pastry Arts.”

Alejandra is in her twenties and has brown hair. She wears a white chef’s hat and white chef’s apron. She stands in a kitchen and whips a batter in a bowl. Then Alex is shown placing the batter on a board and then squeezing a bag filled with icing. Later she pours the icing out into an aluminium pan.

Alex says HI, MY NAME IS ALEX,
AND I'M STUDYING
BAKING and PASTRY ARTS
AT GEORGE BROWN COLLEGE.
AND I'M HERE BECAUSE
I
LOVE
BAKING.
THE WAY I DECIDED TO BECOME
A BAKER IS THROUGH GOING
THROUGH SCHOOL FIRST.
ANOTHER WAY OF BECOMING
A BAKER IS ACTUALLY
SECURING EMPLOYMENT WITH
A PLACE THAT DOES BAKING
AND GOING THROUGH
AN APPRENTICESHIP.
THE COURSE THAT I'M TAKING
NOW IS ONLY A YEAR LONG.
AND AFTERWARDS I DO
GAIN 900 HOURS TOWARD
MY APPRENTICESHIP
AFTER THIS COURSE.
AND THEN YOU CAN WRITE YOUR
PAPERS AFTER ACCUMULATING
YOUR HOURS THAT YOU NEED.
I LOVE TO PLAY WITH FOOD.
IT'S REALLY FUN.
I GET TO BE CREATIVE.
I GET TO BE ARTISTIC.
AND I GET TO SHOW OFF MY
TALENTS IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE.
AND I GET TO EAT
WHAT I MAKE.
ONCE I GRADUATE, I'VE
ALREADY FOUND AN OPPORTUNITY
TO WORK IN A HIGH-END
RESTAURANT IN TORONTO
WORKING AS AN APPRENTICE
PASTRY CHEF.
ALONG THE LINES, AS WELL,
WITHIN A FEW YEARS
I'M DREAMING TO MOVE DOWN
TO THE CARIBBEAN AND
OPENING MY OWN
HIGH-END PATISSERIE.
IN ADDITION TO ALL THE SKILLS
THAT I'VE LEARNED HERE
OTHER SKILLS THAT I'VE LEARNED
IS DEDICATION, PATIENCE,
ABILITY TO WORK WITH OTHERS
IN ANY TYPE OF SITUATION.
I'VE LEARNED TO
BE VERY TENACIOUS,
AND I HAVE TO SEEING AS WE HAVE TO BE
HERE AT SEVEN EVERY MORNING,
I'VE LEARNED THAT SCHOOL
IS IMPORTANT, SO YOU
HAVE TO GO TO BED EARLY.
[Chuckling]

Alex places cream between layers of cake and then decorates the cake with icing, cherries and chocolate shavings.

Alex continues I WOULD DEFINITELY
RECOMMEND THIS PROGRAM,
WHATEVER WALK OF LIFE
YOU'D LIKE TO TAKE.
IT TEACHES YOU A LOT
ABOUT YOURSELF,
ABOUT YOUR DEDICATION
TO WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
IT TEACHES YOU HOW
TO MAKE GREAT DESSERTS.
IF YOU HAVE COMPANY OVER
YOU CAN SURPRISE THEM.
YOU CAN MAKE YOUR
KIDS BIRTHDAY CAKES.
YOU CAN GO ON TO WORK
ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD.
YOU CAN WORK FOR BIG
FACTORIES, YOU CAN WORK FOR
LITTLE BAKERIES, YOU CAN WORK
FOR HIGH-END RESTAURANTS,
OR YOU CAN EVEN RUN IN
ANY HOTEL IN THE WORLD.
IT'S A BIG LINE.
YOU CAN WORK IN CRUISE SHIPS,
YOU CAN WORK IN RESORTS.
IT'S A VERY BIG
MARKET RIGHT NOW.
SO HERE'S MY CAKE.

Jeff says NOW, THERE'S A VERY
INTERESTING OCCUPATION,
AND ONE THAT'S
MAKING ME HUNGRY.
OKAY, SO WE'RE NOW
GOING TO GO TO SOME
MORE CALLERS, AND WE
HAVE, HELLO THERE,
A CALLER FROM
FLAMBOROUGH.
OKAY, WE'RE JUST WAITING
TO CONNECT ON THIS ONE.
AS YOU CAN SEE, THIS WAS
AN APPRENTICESHIP-TYPE
OF PROGRAM, AND THERE
ARE LOTS OF OTHER
APPRENTICESHIPS OUT THERE
THAT ARE AVAILABLE.
SOME THAT ARE IN
BIG DAY RIGHT NOW,
THEY TALK ABOUT TOOL AND
DYE MAKING, FOR EXAMPLE.
FLAMBOROUGH,
HELLO THERE.

Male voice says HI.
IF YOU WORKED AT
A FAST FOOD PLACE,
HOW LONG WOULD
YOU SURVIVE?

Jeff says OKAY, NOW, IS THIS
SOMETHING YOU'RE DOING NOW,
OR SOMETHING YOU'RE
WANTING TO DO?

Male voice says NO, I'M JUST
WONDERING.

Jeff says OKAY.
THANKS VERY MUCH
FOR THAT CALL.
SOME OF THE JOBS THAT YOU
MIGHT TAKE WHILE GOING
TO SCHOOL, PERHAPS, TO
GIVE YOU EXPERIENCE,
WHICH IT WILL, BECAUSE,
AGAIN, FAST FOOD TYPE
OF WORK WOULD TEACH YOU
ABOUT TEAMWORK SKILLS,
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS,
BEING ABLE TO WORK
WITH OTHER PEOPLE, BEING
ABLE TO DEAL WITH PROBLEMS,
BEING ABLE TO
BE FLEXIBLE.
THOSE ARE ALL IMPORTANT
SKILLS THAT WILL HELP YOU
LATER ON WITH OTHER JOBS,
PERHAPS ONCE YOU'VE GONE
AND GOT MORE EXPERIENCE.
AND IT GIVES YOU DIFFERENT
IDEAS ABOUT THE TYPES
OF WORK YOU MAY LIKE,
OR NOT LIKE DOING.
SO IT'LL BE INTERESTING
TO SEE IF YOU'RE GOING INTO
THAT TYPE OF WORK, HOW
LONG YOU GO INTO THAT.
OKAY, SO WE HAVE ANOTHER
CALL FROM SOUTHWOOD PARK.
HELLO THERE.

Male voice says HELLO.

Jeff says HI THERE.
WHAT'S YOUR QUESTION?

Male voice continues HI, I JUST HAVE
ONE QUESTION.
HOW MANY YEARS DO YOU
HAVE TO GO TO UNIVERSITY
TO BE A CHILD
PSYCHOLOGIST?

Jeff says CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST, OKAY.
IS THIS SOMETHING YOU'VE
BEGUN TO EXPLORE ALREADY?

Male voice says NO.

Jeff says BUT YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY
THINKING ABOUT IT.

Male voice says YES.

Jeff continues SO OBVIOUSLY YOU'VE
GOT A FEW YEARS OF
UNDERGRADUATE WORK, WHICH
IS B.A. TYPE OF WORK,
OR B.Sc, BACHELOR WORK.
AND THEN YOU'RE GOING
TO HAVE OTHER WORK
THAT'S GOING TO REQUIRE
LIKELY A MASTERS DEGREE- SO THATS A
ANY MASTERS DEGREE CAN BE
ONE YEAR, IT CAN BE TWO,
MAYBE A FEW YEARS,
DEPENDING ON HOW LONG
IT TAKES SOMEBODY TO GET
THROUGH A MASTERS PROGRAM.
AND TO BE A FULL PSYCHOLOGIST
GENERALLY REQUIRES,
AS WELL, TO GET FURTHER
EDUCATION BELONG THAT.
SO IT'S A FAIRLY
LENGTHY CAREER,
BUT IF IT'S SOMETHING
YOU WANT TO DO,
I ENCOURAGE YOU TO LOOK
INTO IT FURTHER AND GO FOR IT.
OKAY, FROM HOMELANDS,
HELLO THERE.
AND WE ARE JUST
CONNECTING ON THIS ONE.
AGAIN, SOME OF THE DREAMS
YOU HAVE ARE GOING
TO REQUIRE A FAIR BIT
OF WORK TO GET THERE,
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT, IF IT'S
SOMETHING THAT EXCITES YOU
AND YOU WANT TO
DO THAT AND LIVE IT.
CAN YOU IMAGINE YOURSELF
BEING 80 YEARS OLD
AND LOOKING BACK AND
SAYING, I COULD HAVE,
I WAS YOUNG ENOUGH,
I HAD LOTS OF TIME.
WHY DID I THINK I WAS
IN SO MUCH OF A HURRY.
ANYWAY, GO FOR
THOSE DREAMS.LETS GO FOR THIS ONE
THIS QUESTION IS?
HOMELAND, HOW ARE YOU?

Rena says HI, THIS IS
RENA AGAIN.
DO YOU THINK THAT THE JOBS OF
TOMORROW WOULD NEED PEOPLE
WHO WORK WITH
COMPUTERS OR WORK
WITH LIKE
COMPUTER-RELATED THINGS?

Jeff says YES.
ARE YOU WORRIED IT'S
GOING TOO MUCH COMPUTERS,
OR ARE YOU GLAD THERE'S
GOING TO BE A LOT OF COMPUTERS?

Rena says I'M WORRIED BECAUSE
PEOPLE MIGHT BE
OUT OF JOBS, AND
STUFF LIKE THAT,
AND THERE WOULDN'T BE
ENOUGH JOBS FOR PEOPLE.

Jeff says OKAY, NOW, YOU'VE
GOT A POINT THERE,
AND THANK YOU
VERY MUCH.
COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY IS
JUST GOING TO CONTINUE.
THERE'S NO SLOWING
IT DOWN NOW.
AND THE FACT OF THE MATTER
IS IT'S GOING TO OPEN
A LOT OF DOORS, AND ALLOW
YOU A LOT OF DIFFERENT
NEW JOBS THAT WILL
CONTINUE TO SPRING UP
FROM DIFFERENT IDEAS
THAT PEOPLE HAVE,
AND THE WAY
TECHNOLOGY CHANGES.
AT THE SAME TIME,
IT IS GOING TO -
AND IT ALREADY HAS -
ELIMINATED A LOT
OF DIFFERENT JOBS.
SO IN THE SAME
SENSE IT TAKES AWAY,
IT'S GOING TO ALSO
HELP AND PROVIDE
A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES.
OKAY, WE HAVE NOW,
WITH US, STEVE STONE.
AND STEVE STONE IS AN
ARBORICULTURE STUDENT.
AND HE IS UP AT SIR
SANFORD FLEMING SCHOOL.
AND I'M GOING TO LEAVE
THIS UP TO YOU
TO DISCOVER WHAT AN
ARBORICULTURE STUDENT
IN THAT TYPE OF
FIELD IS ALL ABOUT.
SO HERE IS STEVE STONE.

Steven appears in a snowy park with scattered trees. He is in his twenties and has short brown hair. He wears a purple sweatshirt with orange suspenders and an orange hat.

The caption changes to “Steven Stone. Arboriculture Program.”

Steve says MY NAME IS
STEVEN STONE.
I'M HERE AT SIR SANDFORD
FLEMING COLLEGE.
I'M A STUDENT TAKING THE
ARBORICULTURE PROGRAM.
EVENTUALLY I WILL
BE AN ARBORIST.
ARBORISTS ARE PEOPLE WHO
TAKE CARE OF TREES
IN ALMOST EVERY WAY, WHETHER
IN AN URBAN SETTING OR A RURAL SETTING.
IF THE TREE HAPPENS TO HAVE
ANY DEADWOOD OR DISEASE,
IT WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF
EITHER THROUGH CERTAIN APPLICATIONS.
AND BASICALLY ON A JOB
SITE WHAT WE'LL DO
IS LOOK FOR THE
DAMAGE ON THE TREE.
IF IT HAS TO COME DOWN,
WE LOOK FOR TARGETS.
IN AN URBAN ENVIRONMENT YOU'RE
OBVIOUSLY GOING TO HAVE HYDRO LINES,
OTHER TREES, HOUSES,
PEDESTRIANS,
THINGS SUCH AS THIS,
SO EVERYTHING MUST BE
TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION.
THE REASON I GOT INTO
THIS PROGRAM MYSELF
WAS BECAUSE I ENJOY
THE OUTDOORS.
I WAS JUST BASICALLY
LOOKING FOR A JOB
WHERE I CAN WORK OUTSIDE FOR
THE NEXT 10, 15, 20 YEARS.
I'M AN OUTDOORS
PERSON AND DO THINGS
IN MY SPARE
TIME OUTSIDE.
I ALSO ENJOY HARD WORK, AND
THAT'S WHAT A LOT OF IT IS
WHEN YOU'RE CLIMBING
AND DEALING WITH BRUSH.
ANOTHER ATTRACTION TO
THIS SORT OF VOCATION
IS THE SETTING; EVERY
JOB IS DIFFERENT.
EVERY SITUATION
IS DIFFERENT.
YOU MAY COME BACK TO THE SAME
TREE TWO, THREE YEARS LATER
BUT THE WEATHER IS
GOING TO BE DIFFERENT,
THE TREE MAY BE LEANING
A DIFFERENT WAY.
SO, AGAIN, FOR ME,
IT'S NOT MONOTONOUS.
IT'S A DIFFERENT JOB
EVERY TIME YOU COME BACK.
THERE IS AN EXCITEMENT
TO CLIMBING ITSELF.
OBVIOUSLY IT'S NOT
MADE FOR EVERYBODY.
YOU'RE TALKING 80, 100
FOOT SOMETIMES UP A TREE
RELYING ON NOTHING BUT
A HARNESS AND A ROPE;
HOWEVER, THERE IS A WAY TO
DO IT AND DO IT SAFELY.
THEY TEACH THAT AT
THE COLLEGE HERE,
AND IT'S DRILLED
INTO OUR HEADS
OVER AND OVER AGAIN
TO DO IT RIGHT.

A clip shows Steve supporting as a man climbs a tree wearing a green sweatshirt and a yellow hat. Then an upward view of a man climbing between trees.

Steve continues THERE ARE A LOT OF
ADVANCES THAT THE FIELD
OF ARBORICULTURE
HAS GONE THROUGH,
EVERYTHING FROM KNOWING
WHAT TYPES OF SOIL
REACTS WITH CERTAIN
TYPES OF SITUATIONS.
AND EVEN THE
CLIMBING GEAR;
YEARS AGO IT WAS
ALL FREE-CLIMBING:
NO ROPES, NO HARNESSES,
NO NOTHING.
OBVIOUSLY VERY UNSAFE.
NOWADAYS, WE USE FULL
HARNESSES WITH GEAR
AND DO IT VERY SAFELY.
THE DEMAND IN THIS
FIELD IS GROWING
WITH THE AMOUNT OF
URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL
STRESSES PUT ON TREES.
WITH BUILDINGS PUTTING
STRESSES ON ROOTS,
WITH ROADS, ASPHALT
PUTTING STRESSES ON SOILS,
TREES ARE SOMEWHAT
SICK IN CERTAIN
SITUATIONS IN URBAN
ENVIRONMENTS.
SO WE HAVE TO
TAKE CARE OF THEM
AND THAT'S WHAT
I'M HERE TO DO.

Jeff says OKAY, SO AN
ARBORICULTURE PERSON.
THAT'S THE KIND OF
PERSON THAT OBVIOUSLY
LIKES TO DEAL WITH RISKY
TYPES OF ACTIVITY.
IN SOME OF THE TRAINING
THEY GO THROUGH
AT SIR SANFORD FLEMING,
THEY CLIMB TREES
UP TO A HUNDRED FEET.
AND FOR THE PERSON WHO HAS
THAT KIND OF ADVENTUROUS SPIRIT
IN THAT REGARD, LIKES
DOING PHYSICAL WORK,
YOU CAN SEE THAT'S A VERY
INTERESTING OCCUPATION.
AND AGAIN, SOMETHING YOU
MIGHT WANT TO THINK ABOUT
IN TERMS OF YOUR LIKES
AND DISLIKES LIST.
WRITING DOWN PERHAPS
WORK OUT DOORS,
IF YOU LIKE IT, WORK THAT
INVOLVES RISKY BUSINESS,
AS IT WERE.
OKAY, NOW, WE'RE
GOING TO GO TO,
WE'VE GOT A
LOT OF CALLERS,
AND I'M GOING TO GET TO
AS MANY OF YOU AS I CAN.
WE'RE GOING TO GET TO
ANOTHER SEGMENT FIRST.
AND THAT FIRST ONE IS
OF KATRINA VAN OSCH.
SHE'S IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL
PEST MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
AT SIR SANFORD FLEMING.
AND SHE'S GOING TO
TELL YOU ABOUT
A VERY INTERESTING TYPE
OF WORK THAT AGAIN
IS INVOLVING CONCERN
FOR THE ENVIRONMENT,
AND SOME NEAT ANALYSIS
THAT IS SHAPING UP TO BE
A VERY LUCRATIVE CAREER, AND
ONE THAT'S ALSO IN DEMAND.
IT'S SURPRISING AND
IT'S INTERESTING.
SO HERE WE HAVE KATRINA.

Katrina appears in a lab looking into a microscope. She is in her twenties and has shoulder length blond hair. She wears a blue long-sleeved shirt and earrings.

The caption changes to “Katrina Van Osch. Environmental Pest Management.”

A clip shows several cockroaches and then Katrina in a lab in front of a microscope.

She says HI, MY NAME IS
KATRINA VAN OSCH.
I STUDY HERE AT SIR
SANFORD FLEMING COLLEGE
IN LINDSAY, AND I'M IN
THE ENVIRONMENTAL PEST
MANAGEMENT COURSE.
I FIRST CAME TO SIR
SANFORD FLEMING FROM
THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH
WHERE I STUDIED FOR
THREE YEARS, AND THAT'S
WHERE I BECAME INTERESTED
IN THE STUDY OF ENTOMOLOGY,
WHICH IS THE STUDY OF INSECTS.
THIS PROGRAM
AT THE SCHOOL,
ENVIRONMENTAL
PEST MANAGEMENT,
REALLY BECAME
INTERESTING FOR ME,
SO I APPLIED
AND HERE I AM.
RIGHT NOW I'M STUDYING A
COCKROACH THAT YOU CAN SEE
IN THIS AQUARIUM
BESIDE ME.

A clip shows cockroaches crawling around in the aquarium, and then changes to a cockroach on a circular glass tray, followed by a close-up of cockroaches, and an insect trap and monitor.

Katrina says YOU CAN SEE THEM ALL
MOVING AROUND IN THERE.
WHAT WE DO HERE IS
RAISE THE COCKROACHES
SO THE STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO
STUDY THEM AT A LATER DATE
IN A LARGE AMOUNT,
SO THEY CAN SEE WHAT
THEY'RE GOING TO BE COMING
UP AGAINST IN THE JOB FORCE.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE
STUDY HERE AT FLEMING
IS A PROGRAM CALLED
INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT,
WHICH DEALS WITH MANY
DIFFERENT FACETS
THAT ALL YOU COMBINE TO
CONTROL AN INSECT.
SO THE LAST OPTION WOULD
BE CHEMICAL CONTROL;
IT KIND OF INVOLVES MONITORING,
AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
WITH USE OF THINGS
LIKE THE TRAPS,
YOU CAN GO AND WEEKLY
CHECK THEM TO SEE
IF THERE ARE
INSECTS INVOLVED.
AND ONCE YOU DO HAVE
INSECTS INVOLVED,
THEN YOU CAN LOOK TO
OTHER THINGS LIKE WHERE
THEY WOULD COME IN, AND
YOU WOULD TREAT THE AREA.
MAYBE CRACKS AND
CREVICES, YOU WOULD TREAT
THEM BEFORE SPRAYING.
IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTS,
MAYBE YOU WOULD LOOK
TO CHEMICAL TREATMENT.
BUT BECAUSE OF THE
ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS,
WE TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM
THAT AND STRESS MORE
PHYSICAL CONTROLS THAT
THE CONSUMER CAN USE
ASIDE FROM CHEMICALS.

The clip shows several types of traps for a wide variety of animals like a metal cage and a plastic cage.

Katrina continues HERE AT THE COLLEGE,
STUDENTS HAVE ABOUT
THREE OPTIONS THAT
THEY CAN GO INTO.
FROM THE INSECT
POINT OF VIEW,
THEY CAN GO INTO EITHER
STRUCTURAL OR LANDSCAPE.
THE OTHER OPTION WOULD
BE WILDLIFE CONTROL,
WHICH IS THE CONTROL OF
MICE, BATS, RACCOONS,
SKUNKS, OF THAT SORT.
SO HERE ARE JUST A FEW
TRAPS WE WOULD USE
FOR BIRDS AND LARGER
ANIMALS, SKUNKS, RACCOONS,
AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
THE SCHOOL ALSO PROVIDES
TRAPS FOR RATS AND MICE
AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
BECAUSE URBAN POPULATIONS
ARE GROWING AT SUCH
A QUICK RATE TODAY,
PEOPLE THAT GRADUATE
FROM THE ENVIRONMENTAL
PEST MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
ARE IN HIGH DEMAND
RIGHT NOW.
WE HAVE A JOB BOARD HERE
AT THE SCHOOL WHERE YOU
CAN GO AND LOOK AT ALL
THE POTENTIAL JOBS
THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO
STUDENTS LIKE US,
AND THERE ARE NUMEROUS,
NUMEROUS POSITIONS
THAT HAVEN'T BEEN FILLED.
OUR SKILL DOESN'T EVEN
GRADUATE ENOUGH PEOPLE
TO FILL THESE POSITIONS.
ONE OF THE
BONUSES, I GUESS,
THAT COME WITH THESE
POSITIONS ARE THAT
SOME COMPANIES WILL GIVE
YOU A SIGNING BONUS,
OFFER YOU MONEY
JUST FOR SIGNING.
THE STUDENTS HERE AT THE
COLLEGE LEARN PROBLEM SOLVING
AND OTHER THINGS
LIKE THAT THAT MAKE
THEM UNIQUE, AND
THAT'S WHY EMPLOYERS
WANT TO HIRE PEOPLE
LIKE MYSELF.
AND THAT'S WHY I'M SO
EXCITED BECAUSE
I REALLY ENJOY THE
STUDY OF ENTOMOLOGY,
AND I FEEL I CAN
BENEFIT THIS, I GUESS,
JOB MARKET WITH NEW IDEAS
AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

Jeff says OKAY, GREAT.
SO WE'VE HEARD ANOTHER
TYPE OF OCCUPATION THAT,
AS I SAY, CONCERNS
THE ENVIRONMENT.
IT'S ONE THAT'S
A LITTLE UNIQUE,
BUT YOU CAN SEE THAT
TYPE OF OCCUPATION
IS IN DEMAND WORLDWIDE.
I SAW THE JOB
BOARD MYSELF,
AND SAW POSITIONS BEING
OFFERED FOR ALL THE WAY
DOWN TO AUSTRALIA.
OKAY, SO NOW WE'RE GOING
TO GO TO ONE MORE,
AND THEN WE'RE GOING TO
DEAL WITH SOME QUESTIONS.
SO WE HAVE SARAH SCOTT WHO
IS A RECREATION THERAPIST
AT SUNNYBROOK
HOSPITAL, AND SHE'S
IN THE FIELD OF
HEALTHCARE.
SARAH SCOTT.

The caption changes to “Sarah Scott. Recreation Therapist.”

Sarah appears in a room with several clients who are preparing food. She is in her thirties and has short brown hair. She wears a blue turtleneck short-sleeved sweater and black skirt as well as a nametag.

Sarah says I'M SARAH SCOTT, AND I'M
A RECREATION THERAPIST
HERE AT SUNNYBROOK
AND WOMEN'S HEALTH
COLLEGE SCIENCE CENTRE.
THIS PROGRAM HERE
IS THE LUNCH GROUP.
AND TODAY WHAT WE'RE
MAKING ARE WESTERN SANDWICHES.
YOU OKAY?
WHAT I DO IS I MEET
WITH THE PATIENTS
AFTER I'VE RECEIVED A
REFERRAL FROM THE DOCTOR.
I GO IN AND ASSESS
THEIR NEEDS,
AND SEE WHERE THEIR
INTERESTS LIE,
WHAT THEIR NEEDS ARE,
WHAT'S PREVENTING THEM
FROM DOING THEIR CURRENT
LEISURE INVOLVEMENT,
AND THEN I TRY AND
GET THEM INVOLVED
IN A PROGRAM OF
THEIR INTEREST.
FOR EXAMPLE, PEOPLE LIKE
MENTAL STIMULATION
OR NEWSPAPERS, I WOULD
PUT THEM INTO A GROUP
CALLED MIND GAMES.
THAT'S A PROGRAM
WE'RE RUNNING;
CURRENTLY WE'RE
DOING JEOPARDY.
OTHER PROGRAMS,
FOR EXAMPLE,
IS THE LUNCH GROUP,
WHERE PEOPLE WHO -
YOU DON'T ALWAYS
HAVE TO LIKE FOOD,
BUT THEY'RE INTERESTED IN
MAKING FOOD AND GETTING BACK
TO A LEVEL WHERE THEY
CAN GO BACK INTO THEIR
OWN HOMES AND PREPARE
THEIR OWN MEALS.

A clip shows several people cutting up vegetables on cutting boards, then to an elderly woman grating a carrot, later another elderly woman placing the cut green onions in a bowl. The clip changes to a bowl filled with egg batter and vegetables being poured into a skillet on a stove.

Sarah continues I NEVER KNEW THAT I WANTED
TO DO RECREATION THERAPY
SPECIFICALLY, BUT I CAME
OUT OF BROCK UNIVERSITY
WITH A FOUR-YEAR DEGREE.
AND I HEARD OF THE
GEORGIAN PROGRAM,
AND IT INTRIGUED ME
BECAUSE I KNEW IT WAS
EIGHT MONTHS' SCHOOLING
AND THEN A FOUR-MONTH
INTERNSHIP, WHICH IS
REALLY WHAT I WANTED.
SOME HANDS ON
EXPERIENCE.
I KNEW I WANTED A CAREER
THAT WAS CHALLENGING,
BUT ALLOWED ME TO BE
CREATIVE, AS WELL.
AND I WANTED A FAIR
AMOUNT OF AUTONOMY
AND INDEPENDENCE
IN MY ROLE.
AND THIS IS EXACTLY
WHAT I HAVE.
I THINK, HERE AT
SUNNYBROOK ESPECIALLY,
RECREATION THERAPISTS ARE
VERY WELL RECOGNISED.
I'M PART OF THE
TEAM ROUNDS.
OTHER TEAM MEMBERS COME
TO ME WITH THEIR CONCERNS
FOR THE PATIENTS
AND SAY, SARAH,
HOW CAN YOU HELP THIS
PERSON MEET THIS NEED?
WE WORK WELL
TOGETHER AS A GROUP,
AND WE TRY TO MEET THE
NEEDS OF THE PATIENTS
FROM A TEAM PERSPECTIVE.

The caption changes to “Dave Baldock. Intern.”

Dave appears on screen. He is in his thirties and has short brown hair. He wears a blue t-shirt.

Dave says AS AN INTERNSHIP,
PRIMARILY,
YOU'RE INVOLVED IN SUMMER
EXPERIENCES WHERE YOU
GET TO UTILISE THE
SKILLS YOU WERE TAUGHT,
BUT THIS COMPLETES
THE PROGRAM.
IT'S A YEAR PROGRAM.
EIGHT MONTHS
OF CLASS TIME,
AND FOUR MONTHS OF
VOLUNTEER TIME
IN A HOSPITAL OR INSTITUTION
OR COMMUNITY RE-ENTRY PROGRAM.
BY AND LARGE, IT
FINALISES THE PROGRAM,
AND YOU CAN'T GRADUATE
UNTIL YOU'VE ACCUMULATED
600 HOURS OR SO IN TERMS
OF PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE.
SO IT'S A GOOD
OPPORTUNITY TO BRING
YOUR CLASSROOM
EXPERIENCES TO LIFE.
AND BRING THE CLASSROOM
INTO THE PRACTICAL SETTING.

A clip shows Sarah at a table with a piece of silk with a painted flower, an elderly man sits beside her.

Sarah says AS WELL AS
GROUP PROGRAMS,
WE ALSO RUN ONE-TO-ONE
INTERVENTIONS.
SOMETIMES A PATIENT WOULD
LIKE TO MEET A SPECIFIC GOAL
THAT'S NOT BEST MET IN
A GROUP SETTING.
FOR EXAMPLE,
PAINTING ON SILK.
THERE MIGHT NOT BE THE
DEMAND OF A WHOLE GROUP
OF PEOPLE WANTING
TO DO THAT.
SO IT'S APPROPRIATE THEN
TO DO IT ON A ONE-TO-ONE BASIS
WITH THAT PATIENT
SO THEY CAN MEET
THAT GOAL OF WHATEVER
PARTICULAR PROJECT
IT IS THEY WANT
TO WORK ON.
AS A THERAPIST,
IT'S VERY REWARDING.
I'VE ALWAYS KNOWN THAT I
ENJOYED WORKING WITH PEOPLE,
BUT TO HELP THEM
MOVE ALONG SO THEY
CAN GET BACK HOME
AND BE WELL,
OR WHEREVER
THEY'RE GOING,
IS VERY WE REGARDING.
THE ONLY DOWNFALL IS THAT
I DO MISS THEM WHEN THEY GO.

A cream piece of paper pops up, under the title “Youth Resource Network. www.youth.gc.ca.”

Jeff says OKAY, BEFORE WE GO
TO SOME QUESTIONS,
I WANT TO POINT OUT TO YOU A
WEBSITE THAT'S VERY HELPFUL,
CAN GIVE YOU SOME IDEAS
ABOUT THE LABOUR MARKET,
TRAINING AND
EDUCATION PROGRAMS THAT
ARE OUT THERE FOR YOU, WE WILL PUT THIS UP AT THE END SO YOU CAN WRITE THIS DOWN AFTER. IT’S WWW.YOUTH.GC.CA. AND
SOME SELF-ASSESSMENT.

The clip changes to a computer screen that is a youth resource for Canadian students, who are displayed on the screen. The screen changes to information on jobs and training.

Jeff says WHAT THIS ALLOWS YOU TO DO
IS GO THROUGH AND FIND OUT
SOME VERY SPECIFIC
INFORMATION TO QUESTIONS
YOU HAVE THAT ARE RELATED
TO SOME OF THE IDEAS YOU HAVE.
SO IT ALL STARTS WITH
A BIT OF A VISION.
SO AS YOU COLLECT
INFORMATION, YOU GET,
OKAY, I THINK I WANT TO
GO IN THIS DIRECTION,
I NEED SOME MORE
INFORMATION.
THE WONDERFUL THING
ABOUT THE INTERNET,
IT'S GOING TO ALLOW
YOU THAT OPPORTUNITY,
AND THAT WILL HELP
SHAPE YOUR CAREER GOAL.
OKAY, SO NOW WE'LL
GO TO SOME QUESTIONS.
FIRST OF ALL, WE HAVE SOMEBODY
CALLING IN FROM FLAMBOROUGH.
HELLO THERE, FLAMBOROUGH.

Male voice says HELLO.

Jeff says HI.
WHAT'S YOUR QUESTION?

Male voice says HOW LONG WOULD IT TAKE
TO GET YOUR DEGREE
IN COMPUTER SCIENCE?

Jeff says OKAY, THANK YOU.
SO A COMPUTER SCIENCE
DEGREE COULD BE ANYWHERE
FROM THREE TO FOUR YEARS,
AND IF YOU GO ON
TO GRADUATE WORK, IT
COULD BE MORE THAN THAT.
OKAY? THERE ARE ALSO COLLEGE
PROGRAMS THAT WILL BE
SHORTER THAN THAT.
HOMELANDS?
Female voices says HELLO?

Jeff says HI THERE.
WHAT'S YOUR QUESTION?

Female voice says WHAT WOULD YOU
SUGGEST FOR SOMEONE
WHO LIKES TO HELP ALL
KINDS OF ANIMALS,
BUT DOESN'T LIKE TO
DO SURGERY ON THEM?

Jeff says OKAY, THANK YOU
FOR THAT QUESTION.
AND FROM WHAT I KNOW,
THERE'S VETERINARY
ASSISTANTS PROGRAMS.
AND YOU MIGHT WANT TO CALL
YOUR VET AND HAVE A TALK -
A VETERINARIAN'S
OFFICE IN YOUR AREA,
AND EXPLORE THAT WAY.
AND AGAIN, MAKE USE
OF THAT WEBSITE.
IT WILL HELP YOU FIND
RELATED OCCUPATIONS TO THAT.
OKAY, NEXT PLEASE.
FROM HOMELANDS.
HELLO THERE.

Male voice says HELLO.

Jeff says HI, AND YOUR
QUESTION IS?

Male voice continues I HEARD ALL THOSE PEOPLE,
AND I LIKE THOSE JOBS.
WHAT IF YOU DON'T
LIKE YOUR JOB,
BUT YOU GET A
LOT OF MONEY;
IS THAT RIGHT
OR WRONG?

Jeff says THAT'S A GOOD
QUESTION.
THANK YOU.
EVENTUALLY, OVER TIME, IF
YOU'RE ABLE TO PERHAPS
SHAPE YOUR JOB,
FIND DIFFERENT
RESPONSIBILITIES THAT
ALLOW YOU TO GO INTO AREAS
THAT YOU DO FEEL
MORE COMFORTABLE WITH,
THAT'S PROBABLY
THE BEST WAY.
BECAUSE IT'S
VERY STRESSFUL,
AND CAUSES A LOT OF
ANGUISH, A LOT OF PAIN,
WHEN PEOPLE ARE DOING
WORK THAT THEY GET UP
EVERY DAY THINKING,
OKAY, THE MONEY'S GOOD,
BUT I DON'T REALLY
LIKE MY JOB.
THAT CREATES A
LOT OF STRESS.
AND A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE
GOING THROUGH THAT THESE DAYS.
SO IT'S IMPORTANT, AND
IT'S A GREAT POINT.
OKAY SO LAST CALL IS FROM ST. PAT'S
HIGH SCHOOL IN SARNIA.
HI THERE.
Female voice says HI, I WAS WONDERING IF
YOU COULD SHOW THE LIST
AGAIN OF JOBS THAT ARE
GOING TO BE IN NEED.

A clip shows the piece of paper again under the title “Growth Areas.”

Jeff says OKAY, I CERTAINLY CAN. I CAN HAVE A LOOK AT THE
GROWTH AREAS AS
THEY'RE DESCRIBED
IN SOME OF THE RESEARCH. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND ALL OF THE AREAS AROUND COMPUTERS AND MANUFACTURING, TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY DUE TO A LOT OF BABY BOOMERS, HEALTHCARE KIND OF RELATES TO BABY BOOMERS AS WELL, FINANCIAL PLANNING, AND THE COOL FIELD OF COMMUNICATIONS, WE LOOK AT WEB AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND THAT TYPE OF THING.
SO THANK YOU FOR JOINING
US TODAY HERE
ON EXPLORING
EMERGING CAREERS.
IT'S BEEN ABSOLUTELY
WONDERFUL.
YOU'VE HAD EXCELLENT
QUESTIONS.
AND I'M GOING TO LEAVE
YOU WITH THIS QUOTE
TO THINK ABOUT.

A cream piece of paper pops up and it reads, “Believe in your dream, act on it and your dream will become your reality.” The animation on the paper shows a professor giving a student a scroll.

Jeff continues BYE FOR NOW.

The cream piece of paper pops up under the title “Youth Resource Network.www.youth.gc.ca.”
