(music plays)

The opening slate pops up with a countdown timer from 7 seconds and the title “TVO’s Virtual Classroom. Get connected.”
The “V” in “Virtual” is a tick, the “A” in “classroom” is an at sign with an extended loop that turns into a power cord with a plug at the end, and the first “O” in “classroom” is a spinning globe.

When the countdown finishes, Carla appears on screen. She’s in her early thirties and has short dark hair. She wears a purple shirt over a black t-shirt, round-rimmed glasses and earrings.

Carla says GOOD MORNING.
WELCOME TO THE
VIRTUAL CLASSROOM.
TODAY WE HAVE
GOOD NEWS.
ALL THE PHONES
ARE WORKING.
SO YOU GET TO TALK TO ME
ON YOUR OWN PHONE TODAY.
YOU DON'T HAVE
TO LINE UP.
WE'RE GOING TO START
OFF BY LOOKING
AT THAT WORD THAT WE
LEARNED LAST WEEK.
DOES ANYBODY
REMEMBER WHAT IT IS?
IT STARTS WITH AN S.
IT'S STRUCTURES.
I JUST LOVE THAT
WORD, SO I'D LIKE US
TO SAY IT
TOGETHER AGAIN.
BUT WHAT I'M
GOING TO DO
IS I'M GOING TO
CALL SOMEBODY FIRST
SO EVERYBODY AT
THEIR SCHOOL
CAN SAY THE WORD
INTO THEIR PHONE.

As she speaks, she picks up a phone and pretends she is talking to someone.

Carla continues SO WHEN YOU HEAR
YOUR PHONE RING,
REMEMBER, JUST PICK
IT UP AND SAY, HELLO.
SAY HELLO AS SOON AS
YOU PICK THE PHONE UP
SO I CAN HEAR YOU.

Jessica says HI.

Carla says HI.
IS THIS JESSICA?

Jessica says YEAH.

Carla says HI, JESSICA.
HOW ARE YOU TODAY?

Jessica says GOOD.

Carla says HAVE YOU GOT SNOW
AT YOUR SCHOOL TODAY?

Jessica says NO.

Carla says NO SNOW.
OKAY, I HEARD SOME
PEOPLE HAD SNOW,
BUT NOT YOU GUYS.
CAN YOU HOLD YOUR
PHONE OUT LIKE THIS.
BECAUSE I WANT TO
HEAR EVERYBODY
AT YOUR SCHOOL SAY
STRUCTURES TOGETHER.

Carla picks up the phone as she speaks.

Carla continues SO HOLD IT OUT
LIKE THAT.
IS EVERYBODY READY?
I'M GOING TO
COUNT TO THREE,
AND WE'LL ALL SAY
THE WORD TOGETHER.
REALLY LOUD SO
I CAN HEAR YOU.
ONE, TWO, THREE.
STRUCTURES.
I DIDN'T HEAR
ANYBODY.

Jessica says HI.

Carla says IS EVERYBODY THERE?

Jessica says YEAH.

Carla says CAN YOU HOLD YOUR
PHONE UP LIKE THIS?
SEE HOW I'M
HOLDING MINE?
DO THAT WITH YOURS.
NOW, EVERYBODY IN
YOUR CLASSROOM,
ARE YOU ALL PAYING
ATTENTION NOW?
ON THE COUNT OF THREE.
ONE, TWO, THREE.

Jessica’s classmates say STRUCTURES!

Carla says VERY GOOD.
I HEARD YOU THAT TIME.
THANKS, JESSICA.
YOU CAN HANG UP NOW.
THAT'S GREAT.
NOW, LET'S CALL
SOMEBODY ELSE.
HMM, I'LL GO TO A
DIFFERENT SCHOOL THIS TIME.
IF YOU HEAR
YOUR PHONE RING,
PICK IT UP RIGHT
AWAY AND SAY HELLO.
WE'RE GOING TO SPELL THE
WORD STRUCTURES THIS TIME.
I'M GOING TO GO TO
A DIFFERENT CAMERA
SO YOU CAN SEE IT.

The whole screen turns blue and a caption reads “structures.”

Carla says CAN YOU SEE THE WORD
STRUCTURES UP THERE?
DON'T FORGET, AS SOON AS
YOU PICK UP YOUR PHONE,
SAY HELLO.
HI, IS THIS SHANE?

Shane says YEAH.

Carla says HI, SHANE.
NOW, EVERYBODY
AT YOUR SCHOOL
IS GOING TO SPELL
STRUCTURES WITH ME.
CAN YOU SEE ME DOWN
THERE IN THE CORNER?

Carla appears on the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

Shane says YEAH.
Carla says IF YOU HOLD YOUR PHONE
OUT LIKE JESSICA DID
AND EVERYBODY WILL SPELL
IT TOGETHER, OKAY?
WATCH THE SCREEN 'CAUSE
I'M GOING TO PUT
THE LETTERS UP
ON THE SCREEN.
ARE YOU ALL READY?
HERE WE GO.

Shane’s classmates spell the word S-T-R-U-C-T-U-R-E-S!
YAY!

Carla says VERY GOOD.
WELL DONE.
ALL RIGHT, YOU GUYS
ARE GOOD SPELLERS.
THANKS, SHANE.
NOW, WE'VE GOT SOME
STUFF YOU GUYS SENT IN,
SOME OF YOUR WORK
FROM LAST WEEK.
I'M VERY EXCITED
ABOUT THAT,
AND I CAN'T
WAIT TO SHOW IT.
BUT BEFORE WE SHOW THAT,
WE'RE GOING TO TRY
SOMETHING WE DIDN'T
GET TO TRY LAST WEEK.
IT'S CALLED A MULTIPLE
CHOICE QUESTION.
NOW, MULTIPLE CHOICE
QUESTION MEANS
YOU HAVE MULTIPLE
CHOICES.
YOU HAVE A WHOLE BUNCH
OF CHOICES YOU CAN MAKE,
AND YOU HAVE TO
PICK ONE, OKAY?
SO I'M GOING TO PUT
TWO STRUCTURES
HERE UNDER THE CAMERA.
AND YOU HAVE TO
PICK ONE OF THEM.
THE STRUCTURE I WANT YOU
TO PICK IS THE ONE
YOU THINK IS MADE
BY NATURE, OKAY?
SO CONCENTRATE
VERY HARD.
LET ME SHOW YOU
UNDER THE CAMERA
WHAT YOU DO WITH
YOUR PHONE
TO MAKE YOUR DECISION.

The phone appears on screen.

Carla continues WATCH CAREFULLY.
AND YOUR TEACHER CAN
HELP YOU WITH THIS.
YOU PICK UP THE
PHONE LIKE THAT.
SET THAT DOWN.
YOU DON'T HAVE
TO USE IT.
AND WHEN YOU DECIDE
WHICH ONE YOU THINK
IS THE RIGHT ANSWER, LET'S
SAY YOU THINK NUMBER 1
IS THE RIGHT ANSWER,
PRESS NUMBER 1.
DON'T DO IT RIGHT NOW,
'CAUSE I HAVEN'T EVEN ASKED
THE QUESTION
YET, HAVE I?
BUT IF YOU THINK NUMBER 2
IS THE RIGHT ANSWER,
YOU WOULD PRESS
NUMBER 2.
THAT'S ALL YOU
HAVE TO DO.
IS THAT PRETTY EASY?
I THINK SO.
OKAY, SO I'M GOING TO
GET TWO STRUCTURES,
AND I'M GOING TO PUT
THEM UNDER THE CAMERA.
AND WE'LL SEE WHICH ONE
YOU THINK IS MADE BY NATURE.
I'VE GOT THIS
STRUCTURE.

Carla shows a big rock.

Carla continues I'LL PUT IT
UNDER THE CAMERA
SO YOU CAN SEE
IT BETTER.
AND I'VE GOT
THIS STRUCTURE.

Carla shows a pair of scissors.

Carla continues SO HERE'S TWO
STRUCTURES.
YOU PICK THE ONE YOU
THINK IS MADE BY NATURE.
I'LL PUT THEM
UNDER THE CAMERA,
AND I'LL PUT A
NUMBER WITH THEM.

A piece of paper appears on screen with numbers 1 and 2.

Carla continues IF YOU THINK THIS
IS MADE BY NATURE,
PRESS NUMBER 1.
IF YOU THINK THIS
IS MADE BY NATURE,
PRESS NUMBER 2.
ALL RIGHT?
PRESS NUMBER 1
FOR THIS ONE,
AND NUMBER 2
FOR THIS ONE.
EVERYBODY IS RACING
TO THEIR PHONES.
I HAVE A COMPUTER HERE.
I CAN SEE HOW MANY
PEOPLE ARE ANSWERING.
YOU'VE GOT TO THINK
ABOUT YOUR ANSWERS FIRST
BECAUSE YOU CAN'T CHANGE
YOUR MIND, ALL RIGHT?
IF YOU HAVE A PARTNER,
DECIDE TOGETHER
BEFORE YOU PRESS
THE BUTTONS.
SO NUMBER 1 IF YOU
THINK IT'S THIS ONE
MADE BY NATURE.
NUMBER 2 IF YOU THINK
THIS ONE'S MADE BY NATURE.
WOW.
WE'RE GETTING
LOTS OF ANSWERS.
ALMOST EVERYBODY'S
ANSWERED.
SO LET'S TAKE A LOOK
AND SEE WHAT YOU SAID.

A graph titled “Question No:2” shows the results on screen.

On the left side of the graph a column reads “This structure is made by: 1. Nature, 2. Human.”

Carla says SEE THIS CHART?
ISN'T THAT NEAT?
I CAN SHOW YOU ON THIS
CHART WHO GUESSED WHAT.
SO THIS BAR HERE, THIS
GREEN BAR SAID 37 PEOPLE
THOUGHT THE ROCK
WAS MADE BY NATURE.
AND ONE PERSON
THOUGHT THE SCISSORS.
THE SCISSORS WERE
ACTUALLY MADE BY PEOPLE.
WE MADE THEM SO WE
CAN CUT THINGS UP.
AND THE ROCK IS
MADE BY NATURE.
SO THIS ONE IS CORRECT.
YOU HAVE TO THINK
CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU MAKE
YOUR ANSWER BECAUSE YOU
CAN'T CHANGE YOUR MIND.
DO YOU WANT TO
TRY ANOTHER ONE?
YEAH, WE'LL TRY
ANOTHER ONE.
NOW, BE VERY CAREFUL
BEFORE YOU GUESS.
LET'S GET RID OF
THAT QUESTION
AND PUT UP ANOTHER ONE.
OKAY, NOW, I'VE
GOT TWO THINGS.
LET'S LOOK UNDER
THE CAMERA.
IF YOU THINK THIS ONE
IS MADE BY NATURE,
PRESS NUMBER 1.

The white sheet of paper shows up on screen. Carla places a pencil by number 1, as she speaks.

Carla continues IF YOU THINK THAT THAT
ONE IS MADE BY NATURE,
PRESS NUMBER 2, OKAY?

Carla places a small branch by number 2.

Carla continues THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE
YOU PRESS THE BUTTONS.
REMEMBER, IF YOU'VE
GOT A PARTNER,
DECIDE BEFORE YOU PRESS.
SO IF YOU THINK THIS ONE
IS NATURE, PRESS ONE.
IF YOU THINK THIS ONE
IS NATURE, PRESS TWO.
YOU'RE RACING
TO THE PHONES.
EVERYBODY IS GOING
REALLY FAST NOW.
YOU'RE GETTING
GOOD AT THIS.
THAT'S GREAT.
OKAY, LET'S TAKE
A LOOK AND SEE
WHAT PEOPLE ARE
ANSWERING.

A chart shows on screen. The background is colored aqua. It is titled “Question No. 3.

Carla continues THERE'S THE QUESTION.
AND HERE ARE THE ANSWERS.

As Carla speaks she shows the results on screen.

Carla says OKAY, WE'VE GOT 36
PEOPLE THINK NUMBER 2,
THE STICK, IS
MADE BY NATURE.
AND THAT'S
ACTUALLY CORRECT.
THREE PEOPLE SAID
NUMBER 1 IS MADE
BY NATURE, AND
THAT'S THE PENCIL.
NOW, THIS IS A
TRICKY ONE, ISN'T IT?
LET'S GO TO THIS CAMERA.
THIS IS A TRICKY
ONE BECAUSE
PENCIL IS MADE FROM WOOD.
BUT HUMANS MAKE A PENCIL.
THEY TAKE SOME WOOD AND
THEY SHAPE IT INTO
A SPECIAL SHAPE, AND THEY
PUT SOME GRAPHITE IN IT
AND AN ERASER ON THE END,
AND NOW IT'S A PENCIL.
IT'S MADE BY HUMANS.
SO IT STARTS OUT MADE BY
NATURE, LIKE A STICK,
BUT WHEN WE'RE
FINISHED WITH IT,
IT'S SOMETHING
HUMANS MADE, OKAY?
SO THAT'S AN INTERESTING
PROBLEM BECAUSE SOMETIMES
WE TAKE NATURE AND CHANGE
IT INTO HUMAN-MADE
SOMETHING OR OTHER.
THAT'S GREAT.
YOU'RE DOING REALLY WELL
WITH THOSE QUESTIONS.
WE'RE GOING TO GO ON AND
WE'RE GOING TO LOOK
AT SOME OF YOUR WORK.
ISN'T THAT EXCITING?
SO I HAVE SOME NAMES HERE.
I'M GOING TO CALL SOME
PEOPLE AND I'M GOING TO ASK
THEM ABOUT THEIR
PICTURES THAT THEY SENT ME.
LAST WEEK YOU WERE DRAWING
PICTURES OF STRUCTURES
THAT YOU SAW
AROUND YOUR SCHOOL,
OR AROUND YOUR HOUSE THAT
WERE MADE BY NATURE,
OR MADE BY HUMANS.
AND WHEN YOU HEAR
YOUR PHONE RING,
PICK IT UP AND SAY HELLO
SO I CAN HEAR YOU.
HELLO?
ARE YOU THERE?
OH, IT LOOKS LIKE
YOU'RE CONNECTED,
BUT I CAN'T HEAR YOU.
NICHOLAS, CAN YOU PICK
UP YOUR PHONE, PLEASE?
AT ELGIN SCHOOL.
HI.

Nicholas says HELLO.

Carla says IS THIS NICHOLAS?
HI, NICHOLAS.
YOU HAVE TO SPEAK REALLY
CLOSE INTO YOUR PHONE
BECAUSE I CAN'T
HEAR YOU VERY WELL.
ARE YOU THERE?
NICHOLAS?

Nicholas says YEAH.

Carla says THERE YOU ARE.
STAY ON THE PHONE 'CAUSE
I'M GOING TO ASK
YOU A QUESTION.
DON'T HANG UP, OKAY?
I'M GOING TO SHOW SOME
OF YOUR STUFF UNDER
THE CAMERA, ALL RIGHT?
AND I'M GOING TO ASK
YOU A QUESTION ABOUT IT.
SO DON'T HANG UP.
ARE YOU READY?
HERE'S NICHOLAS' WORK
SHEET THAT HE SENT
WITH SOME PICTURES THAT HE
DREW OF SOME STRUCTURES.

As Carla speaks, Nicholas’s works shows on screen.

Carla says CAN EVERYBODY
SEE THAT OKAY?
NOW, NICHOLAS, I WANT TO
ASK YOU WHAT THIS ONE
IS RIGHT HERE?
DO YOU REMEMBER?

Nicholas says A JACK O'LANTERN.

Carla says A JACK O'LANTERN,
THAT'S GREAT.
AND WHO MADE THAT
JACK O'LANTERN?

Nicholas says ME.

Carla says YOU DID?
SO YOU'RE A HUMAN, RIGHT?
SO IT'S A HUMAN
MADE JACK O'LANTERN.
THAT'S RIGHT.
I HAVE A QUESTION.
WHAT WAS THE JACK O'LANTERN
BEFORE YOU MADE IT
INTO A JACK O'LANTERN?

Nicholas says A PUMPKIN.

Carla says A PUMPKIN.
AND WHAT'S A
PUMPKIN MADE BY?
HUMANS OR NATURE?

Nicholas says NATURE.

Carla says RIGHT.
SO YOU TOOK SOMETHING
MADE BY NATURE,
AND YOU MADE IT INTO
SOMETHING MADE BY HUMANS.
THAT'S VERY GOOD.
THANKS, NICHOLAS, FOR
SENDING IN YOUR PICTURE.
I'M GOING TO CALL
SOMEBODY ELSE NOW, OKAY?

Nicholas says OKAY.

Carla says THANKS, BYE.

Nicholas says BYE.

Carla says OKAY, NOW I'M CALLING
ANOTHER SOMEBODY
AT ELGIN SCHOOL.
I THINK I'M
CALLING SOMEBODY.
LET'S SEE.
OH, I'M SORRY, I THOUGHT
IT WENT TO THE NEXT PERSON.
I'M LEARNING HOW TO
USE THE PHONES, TOO.
SOMETIMES THEY DO THINGS
I DIDN'T KNOW THEY DID.
JUST LIKE YOU GUYS
ARE LEARNING, TOO.
WE'RE ALL LEARNING
TOGETHER.
I'M CALLING NATHAN
AT ELGIN SCHOOL.
ARE YOU THERE, NATHAN?

Nathan says YES.

Carla says HI, HOW ARE YOU?

Nathan says GOOD.

Carla says LET'S LOOK AT YOUR
PICTURES UNDER THE CAMERA
AND SEE WHAT YOU DREW.

As Carla speaks, Nathan’s works shows up on screen.

Carla says YOU'VE GOT SOME GREAT
THEY THINKS HERE.
UNFORTUNATELY, THERE'S A
LITTLE BLACK LINE
THROUGH YOUR PICTURE.
THAT CAME FROM
THE FAX MACHINE.
BUT LET'S SEE,
YOU'VE GOT -
WHAT'S THAT
ONE UP THERE?

Nathan says BIKE.

Carla says A BIKE.
IS THAT YOUR BIKE?

Nathan says YEAH.

Carla says AND THAT'S MADE BY
HUMANS, ISN'T IT?

Nathan says YEAH.

Carla says WHAT ABOUT THIS
ONE OVER HERE?

Nathan says NATURE.

Carla says AND THAT'S
A FISH.
DO YOU HAVE A
FISH AT HOME?

Nathan says NO.

Carla says NO, YOU DON'T.
YOU JUST LIKE
TO DRAW A FISH.

Nathan says YEAH.

Carla says THOSE ARE GREAT
DRAWINGS.
THANK YOU FOR
SENDING THOSE IN.
BYE FOR NOW.

Nathan says YUP.

Carla say OKAY.
WE'RE GOING TO THE
NEXT STUDENT AT ELGIN
WHO SENT US SOMETHING.
AND THAT'S
MICHAEL CROSBY.
ARE YOU THERE,
MICHAEL?

Michael says YES.

Carla says HI, MICHAEL,
HOW ARE YOU?

Michael says GOOD.

Carla says LET'S LOOK AT
YOUR PICTURES.
LET'S SEE WHICH ONE,
OH, THERE'S A GOOD ONE.
YOU PROBABLY
NEEDED THAT TODAY.
WHAT IS THAT?
DO YOU REMEMBER?

As Carla speaks Michael’s work shows up on screen.

Michael says FINGERS?

Carla says IT'S A GLOVE,
YOU'RE RIGHT.
IT'S GOT FINGERS.
WHY DID THEY
MAKE A GLOVE?
WHY DID HUMANS
MAKE A GLOVE?
WHEN DO YOU WEAR
YOUR GLOVES?

Michael says TO KEEP YOUR
HANDS WARM.

Carla says YEAH, YOU WEAR IT WHEN
IT'S COLD OUTSIDE
TO KEEP YOUR HANDS WARM.
THAT'S RIGHT.
THAT'S A GOOD PURPOSE.
WHERE WOULD
YOU FIND HANDS?
ARE THEY MADE BY HUMANS
OR MADE BY NATURE?

Michael says HUMANS.

Carla says HUMANS?
WELL, HUMANS HAVE HANDS,
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT?
THEY'RE MADE MY NATURE.
NATURE MAKES OUR HANDS.
YEAH.
BUT WE MAKE THE
GLOVES TO COVER THEM.
VERY GOOD.
THOSE ARE GREAT
PICTURES.
THANKS FOR
SENDING THEM IN.
AND I'M GOING TO GO
TO ANOTHER STUDENT
AT A DIFFERENT
SCHOOL NOW.
WE'RE GOING TO GO
TO ST. JOHN SCHOOL.
ST. JOHN BREBEUF,
PARDON ME.
AND I'VE GOT SOMETHING
HERE BY ERIN.
ERIN, PICK UP YOUR PHONE AS
SOON AS YOU HEAR IT RINGING.
HI, ERIN.

Erin says HI.

Carla says HOW ARE YOU TODAY?

Erin says GOOD.

Carla says I'M GOING TO SHOW YOUR
PICTURE UNDER THE CAMERA.

Erin’s works shows up on screen.

Erin says OKAY.

Carla says AND I'M GOING TO ASK YOU
ABOUT SOMETHING HERE.
WHAT'S THIS ONE UP HERE?

Erin says A DINOSAUR.

Carla says A DINOSAUR.
AND THAT'S MADE BY WHO?
NATURE OR HUMANS?

Erin says NATURE.

Carla says BY NATURE, RIGHT.
WE DON'T HAVE ANY
AROUND ANYMORE,
THANK GOODNESS.
THEY'RE QUITE
LARGE, AREN'T THEY?
THEY TAKE UP A
LOT OF SPACE.
YOU'VE ALSO GOT GLASSES.
THEY'RE MADE BY HUMANS.
WHY DO HUMANS
MAKE GLASSES?

Erin says UM...
SO PERSONS CAN SEE.

Carla says SO PEOPLE CAN SEE BETTER.
THAT'S RIGHT.
I HAVE GLASSES ON
SO I CAN SEE BETTER.
IF I DIDN'T
HAVE MY GLASSES,
I COULDN'T SEE
VERY WELL.
YOU ALSO HAD
PENCIL ON HERE.
BUT REMEMBER, WE JUST
TALKED ABOUT PENCIL.
THAT ACTUALLY, IT'S
MADE BY HUMANS.
BUT IT'S MADE
FROM A STICK.
THIS IS VERY GOOD.
THANKS FOR SENDING
THAT IN TO US.
AND I'M GOING TO GO ON TO
DEAN AT YOUR SCHOOL NOW.
HI, DEAN.
THAT WAS FAST.
YOU PICKED UP
VERY QUICKLY.

Dean says YUP.

Carla says LET'S LOOK AT YOUR
PICTURE AND SEE
WHAT WE'VE GOT HERE.
WE'VE GOT, HMM...
THERE'S A GOOD ONE.

Dean’s work shows up on screen.

Dean says A CHAIR.

Carla says WHAT'S THE
PURPOSE OF A CHAIR?

Dean says TO HOLD THINGS AND
YOU CAN SIT ON IT.

Carla says YOU CAN SIT
ON IT, EXACTLY.
THAT'S THE JOB
OF A CHAIR.
EVERY STRUCTURE
HAS A JOB.
IS THIS YOUR CAT?

Dean says I DON'T HAVE A CAT.

Carla says YOU DON'T HAVE A CAT.
I HAVE A CAT.

Dean says I CAN'T HAVE A CAT.

Carla says OH, THAT'S TOO BAD.

Dean says 'CAUSE MY SISTER'S
ALLERGIC.

Carla says OH, OKAY.
SOME PEOPLE THINK THE
PURPOSE OF A CAT
IS TO MAKE PEOPLE
ALLERGIC, BUT IT'S NOT.
I HAVE A CAT AT HOME.
AND CATS ARE VERY NICE.
DO YOU KNOW MY DAUGHTER,
WHO IS ONLY EIGHT MONTHS OLD,
HER FIRST
WORD WAS ANGUS.
THAT'S THE NAME
OF OUR CAT.
SHE SAID THAT THIS WEEK.
SHE SAID ANGUS 'CAUSE
SHE LOVES THE CAT.
I'M CALLING
SOMEBODY ELSE NOW.
THANKS FOR TALKING
TO ME, DEAN.
IS TREVOR THERE?

Trevor says HI.

Carla says HI, TREVOR,
IT'S CARLA.
LET'S LOOK AT
YOUR PICTURES.
THIS IS THE LAST ONE WE'RE
GOING TO LOOK AT TODAY.
WHAT HAVE WE GOT THERE?
THERE'S A GOOD
ONE RIGHT THERE.
REMEMBER WHAT
THAT ONE IS?

Trevor’s works shows up on screen.

Trevor says COMPUTER.

Carla says COMPUTER.
THAT'S DEFINITELY MADE
BY PEOPLE, ISN'T IT?
WHAT ABOUT
THESE ONES HERE?
REMEMBER WHAT THAT IS?

Trevor says BIRDS.

Carla says BIRDS.
AND WHAT ARE
BIRDS MADE BY?

Trevor says BY NATURE.

Carla says BY NATURE,
THAT'S RIGHT.
OKAY, THANKS FOR
SENDING YOUR STUFF IN.
IT'S REALLY GREAT
TO SEE YOUR WORK.
OKAY, THANK YOU.
THANKS VERY MUCH
FOR CALLING IN.
THAT WAS REALLY GREAT.
AND ONE THING WE'VE
LEARNED THAT IS REALLY
IMPORTANT IS THAT EVERY
STRUCTURE HAS A JOB,
AND WHEN YOU ARE
LOOKING AT STRUCTURES,
TRY AND THINK, WHAT IS
THE JOB OR THE PURPOSE
OF THIS STRUCTURE?
AND ESPECIALLY
STRUCTURES THAT WE MAKE.
WE ALWAYS MAKE
STRUCTURES WITH
A SPECIFIC PURPOSE IN MIND.
NOW, WE'RE GOING TO
STOP FOR A FEW MINUTES,
AND WHAT WE'RE GOING
TO DO IS SEPARATE
STRUCTURES INTO
TWO PILES.
STRUCTURES MADE
BY NATURE,
AND STRUCTURES
MADE BY HUMANS.
NOW, LAST WEEK YOU WERE
CUTTING UP SOME MAGAZINE
PICTURES OF STRUCTURES.
AND I'VE GOT SOME HERE.
AND I'M GOING TO SHOW
YOU HOW I'D LIKE YOU
TO SEPARATE THEM.
AND THEN WE'LL
TAKE A BREAK,
AND YOU CAN
START DOING THAT.
SO I'M GOING TO CALL
SOMEBODY, MAYBE,
WHO CAN HELP ME.
I'M JUST GOING TO PICK
SOMEBODY AT RANDOM
AND SEE WHO WE'VE GOT.
I'M CALLING SOMEBODY.
AND WHEN YOUR PHONE
RINGS, PICK IT UP, OKAY?
YOUR TEACHER IS GOING TO
HAVE SOME MASKING TAPE
OR SOME OTHER
TAPE IN THE ROOM
SO WE CAN DIVIDE
THE ROOM UP.

Carla grabs some tape.

Carla says OKAY, DON'T FORGET TO
SAY HELLO AS SOON
AS YOUR PHONE RINGS.

Josie says HELLO?

Carla says HI.
IS THIS JOSIE LEE?

Josie says YES.

Carla says HI, JOSIE LEE,
IT'S CARLA.
OH, YOU KNEW THAT
BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE ME.
NOW, YOU'RE GOING TO
HAVE SOME MASKING TAPE.
WE'RE GOING TO
PUT IT ACROSS.
LET'S LOOK AT THIS
GRAPHICS' CAMERA
SO YOU CAN SEE
WHAT I'M DOING.
SO I'VE GOT SOME A
PIECE OF MASKING TAPE.
CAN YOU SEE THAT OKAY?

Josie says YEAH.

A blue paper shows on screen with a caption that reads “Nature” and a caption that reads “Humans.” Carla divides the paper into two columns by putting tape in the middle.

Carla says ON ONE SIDE
I'VE GOT NATURE,
AND ON THE OTHER
SIDE I'VE GOT HUMANS.
NOW, JOSIE LEE, I WOULD
LIKE YOU TO HELP ME
DIVIDE SOME PICTURES
UP HERE, IF YOU WOULD.
JUST TELL ME WHICH
SIDE YOU THINK -
CAN YOU SEE
WHAT THAT IS?

Josie says YEAH.

Carla says WHAT IS THAT?

Josie says A BULL.

Carla says WHAT SIDE WOULD THAT GO
ON NATURE OR HUMANS?
IS THAT MADE BY
NATURE OR HUMANS?

Josie says NATURE.

Carla says MADE BY NATURE.
SO WE PUT THAT
ON THIS SIDE.
HMM, HOW ABOUT THIS ONE?
OH, THAT'S PRETTY SMALL.
CAN YOU SEE THAT?

Josie says YUP.

Carla says WHAT IS IT?

Josie says A WATCH.

Carla says YUP.
AND WHICH SIDE
WOULD THAT GO ON?

Josie says HUMAN.

Carla says BY HUMANS, YOU'RE RIGHT.
YOU'RE RIGHT.
SO WE'LL PUT THAT
ON THAT SIDE.
AND I'M GOING TO CALL
SOMEBODY ELSE TO HELP ME NOW.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.
THAT'S GREAT.
OKAY, WHILE YOU'RE
LISTENING FOR YOUR PHONE,
TAKE A LOOK AT THIS ONE
AND THINK ABOUT THAT.
I'M CALLING USBORNE.
SO IF YOUR PHONE
RINGS, PICK IT UP.
I'M ACTUALLY
CALLING STEPHEN.
HI, STEPHEN.

Stephen says HI.

Carla says CAN YOU TELL ME
WHERE THIS GOES?
WHAT IS THAT,
FIRST OF ALL?
DO YOU KNOW WHAT
THAT IS?

Stephen says YEAH.

Carla says WHAT IS IT?

Stephen A HOT DOG.

Carla says A HOT DOG.
IS THAT MADE BY
NATURE OR BY HUMANS?
THAT'S A HARD ONE.

Stephen says HUMANS.

Carla says PARDON?

Stephen says HUMANS.

Carla says HUMANS, YOU ARE RIGHT.
THAT'S GREAT.
DO YOU WANT TO
DO ANOTHER ONE?

Stephen says YES.

Carla says OKAY.
WHAT'S THAT ONE?

Stephen says A TOMATO.

Carla says A TOMATO.
WHAT'S THAT MADE BY?

Stephen says NATURE.

Carla says BY NATURE.
SO WE'LL PUT THAT
ON THAT SIDE.
OKAY, THAT'S GREAT.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.
I'M GOING TO CALL, LET'S
SEE, SOMEBODY AT ELGIN.
I'M CALLING CONNOR.
I DON'T THINK YOUR PHONES
ARE RINGING THERE.
SO CONNOR, PICK YOUR
PHONE UP AND SAY HELLO.
WE'LL FIND SOMETHING
HERE WE HAVEN'T HAD YET.
OH, HERE'S ONE.
I LIKE THIS ONE.
ARE YOU THERE, CONNOR?
PICK UP YOUR PHONE.
CONNOR PETERSON?
ARE YOU THERE?

Connor says YES.

Carla says HI.

Connor says HI.

Carla says WHAT'S THAT?

Connor says A DOG.

Carla says AND WHICH SIDE
DOES THAT GO ON?
NATURE OR HUMANS?
MADE BY NATURE,
OR MADE BY HUMANS?

Connor says NATURE.

Carla says NATURE, VERY GOOD.
OKAY, WHAT YOU'RE GOING
TO DO IN YOUR CLASSROOMS
WITH YOUR TEACHER, WHEN
YOU GO ON THIS BREAK FOR
A FEW MINUTES, IS YOU ARE
GOING TO DIVIDE ALL
OF THE PICTURES YOU'VE
CUT UP INTO NATURE
VERSUS HUMANS, OKAY?
SO ONE SIDE OR THE
OTHER OF THE TAPE.
AND THEN YOU'RE GOING TO
MATCH THEM LIKE THIS.
ONE NATURE, ONE HUMANS,
ONE NATURE, ONE HUMANS.
UH OH, I'VE GOT ONE
LEFT OVER, ONE NATURE.
BUT THAT'S GOOD, 'CAUSE I
WANT TO KNOW HOW MANY
ARE LEFT OVER, OKAY?
DO YOU KNOW HOW
THAT WORKS, CONNOR?
HOW MANY DID I
HAVE LEFT OVER?
DO YOU WANT TO
SEE THAT AGAIN?
HOW MANY DO I
HAVE LEFT OVER?
THOSE TWO MATCH,
AND THOSE TWO MATCH,
AND THEN I HAVE THIS
ONE ALL BY ITSELF.
SORRY?

Connor says FIVE.

Carla says YOU HAVE HOW
MANY LEFT OVER?

Connor says FIVE.

Carla says I HAVE FIVE ALTOGETHER,
YOU'RE RIGHT.
BUT WHEN I
MATCH THEM UP,
THESE TWO GO
TOGETHER, OKAY?
AND THOSE TWO
GO TOGETHER.
THEY CANCEL EACH
OTHER OUT, SORT OF.
I DON'T HAVE IN TO
GO WITH MY DOG, DO I?
I DON'T HAVE ONE
TO MATCH MY DOG.
SO I HAVE ONE
LEFT OVER.
THAT'S RIGHT.
OKAY?
THAT'S KIND OF HARD, BUT
YOUR TEACHER IS GOING
TO HELP YOU WITH THAT.
IT'S CALLED ONE-TO-ONE
MATCHING.
NOW, WHAT WE'RE GOING
TO DO IS STOP FOR
ABOUT FIVE MINUTES, OKAY?
SO YOU HAVE TO
WORK VERY QUICKLY.
BUT TRY TO WORK VERY
WELL TOGETHER, OKAY?
SO COOPERATE AND TRY TO
NOT DO IT TOO LOUDLY
SO YOU CAN ALL
HEAR EACH OTHER.
AND YOU'RE GOING
TO SEPARATE.
STRUCTURES
MADE BY NATURE,
AND STRUCTURES
MADE BY HUMANS,
AND THEN YOU'RE GOING TO
MATCH THEM UP ONE TO ONE.
SO ONE STRUCTURE
MADE BY NATURE,
AND ONE MADE BY HUMANS.
AND THEN WHEN YOU
GET TO THE BOTTOM,
SEE WHICH ONES YOU
HAVE LEFT OVER,
SO YOU KNOW WHICH
ONES YOU HAVE MORE OF.
DO YOU HAVE MORE
MADE BY NATURE,
OR MORE MADE BY HUMANS?
THAT'S WHAT WE
WANT TO KNOW.
AND YOU HAVE A REPORTER.
IF YOUR TEACHER HASN'T
ASSIGNED A REPORTER,
THEY'LL ASSIGN ONE NOW.
AND THE REPORTER WILL
PHONE US AS SOON
AS YOU'RE FINISHED, OKAY,
SO WE CAN GET GOING.
ONCE WE'VE GOT
ALL OUR CALLS IN,
WE'LL COME BACK AND WE'LL
TALK ABOUT THE RESULTS, OKAY?
SO GO SORT YOUR
STRUCTURES.
AND WE'LL GO TO BREAK.

A blue screen appears on screen. A title reads “Brainstorm Break:” with an icon of a lightbulb on the left. Beneath the title a set of instructions read “Sort your structure into two piles: natural and human-made. One-to-one match the structures. Count how many you have leftover. Write this number on the board. Have your Reporter dial #9 when you are finished.”

Carla says HI, EVERYONE.
I HOPE YOU CAN
HEAR ME.
I JUST WANTED TO
LET YOU KNOW
WE'RE ALMOST
FINISHED.
YOU'VE GOT ABOUT
30 SECONDS LEFT.
SO TRY TO FINISH
UP YOUR SORTING,
AND HAVE YOUR
REPORTER CALL ME.
AND THEN WAIT FOR
ME TO CALL BACK.
THANKS.
HI, WE'RE BACK.
WE'RE STILL
WAITING FOR A CALL
FROM USBORNE TO MAKE
SURE YOU'RE FINISHED,
BUT WE'RE
RUNNING OUT OF TIME,
SO WE'VE GOT TO GET
FINISHED UP, OKAY?
SO I'M GOING TO
CALL SOMEBODY
FROM ST. JOHN
BREBEUF.
STEFANO I'M
CALLING.
SO PICK UP
YOUR PHONE.

Stefano says HELLO?

Carla says HI, IS THIS
STEFANO?

Stefano says YES.

Carla says HI.
WHICH STRUCTURES DID
YOU HAVE MORE OF?
DID YOU HAVE MORE
MADE BY NATURE,
OR MORE MADE
BY HUMANS?

Stefano says NATURE.

Carla says MADE BY NATURE.
DID YOU HAVE LOTS
MORE MADE BY NATURE?

Stefano says YEAH.

Carla says HOW MANY.
DID YOU COUNT THEM?

Stefano says TEN.

Carla says TEN MORE MADE BY
NATURE IN YOUR CLASS.
WELL, OKAY,
THANKS VERY MUCH.
I'M GOING TO CALL
SOMEBODY ELSE NOW.
I'M CALLING DANA
AT ELGIN.
SO DANA, IF YOU COULD
PICK UP YOUR PHONE.

Dana says HELLO.

Carla says HI, DANA.
WHICH DID YOU HAVE
MORE OF AT YOUR SCHOOL?
MADE BY NATURE,
OR MADE BY HUMANS?

Dana says NATURE.

Carla says MADE BY NATURE.
AND DO YOU KNOW
HOW MANY MORE?

Dana says ONE LEFT OVER.

Carla says YOU ONLY HAD
ONE LEFT OVER.
OKAY.
THAT'S GREAT.
THANKS VERY MUCH.
AND I DON'T HAVE
ANYBODY WHO HAS
CALLED ME
FROM USBORNE.
SO WE'RE GOING TO
HAVE TO GO ON, OKAY?
BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW
WHO YOUR REPORTER IS.
IF YOU REMEMBER TO
CALL ME FROM USBORNE,
THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
OH, HERE IT IS.
SO WE'LL GET CONNECTED
WITH YOU FROM USBORNE.
WHO IS IT?
IT'S STEPHEN.
SO STEVEN, PICK
UP YOUR PHONE
WHEN YOU HEAR
IT RING.
SHOULD BE
CONNECTING NOW.
STEPHEN, ARE
YOU THERE?
PICK UP YOUR PHONE.

Steven says HI.

Carla says HI.
I CAN BARELY HEAR YOU.
TALK REALLY LOUD INTO
YOUR PHONE, OKAY?
WHICH DID YOU
HAVE MORE OF?
MADE BY NATURE,
OR MADE BY HUMANS?

Steven says HUMANS.

Carla says MADE BY HUMANS.
OKAY.
AND HOW MANY MORE?
DID YOU COUNT THEM?

Steven says TWO.

Carla says TWO MORE MADE
BY HUMANS.
WELL, LET'S SEE NOW.
THANKS FOR
CALLING, STEVEN.
WE HAD ONE SCHOOL HAD
MORE MADE BY NATURE,
AND ANOTHER SCHOOL HAD
MORE MADE BY NATURE,
AND ANOTHER SCHOOL AND
MORE MADE BY HUMANS.
SO OVERALL, I THINK
WE HAD MORE MADE
BY NATURE THAN
HUMANS.
BUT DOES THAT MEAN
IN THE WHOLE WORLD
THERE'S MORE MADE
BY NATURE?
WELL, NOT NECESSARILY.
IT WOULD TAKE A LOT OF
WORK TO COUNT UP HOW
MANY WERE MADE BY NATURE
IN THE WHOLE WORLD,
AND HOW MANY WERE MADE
BY HUMANS IN THE WHOLE WORLD.
I DON'T THINK WE'LL GET
INTO THAT ONE BECAUSE
THAT'S A BIG PROJECT.
BUT FOR OUR GROUP, IT
SEEMS LIKE WE HAD
MORE MADE BY NATURE.
I WONDER IF IT'S BECAUSE
WE LIKED CUTTING OUT
PICTURES OF STRUCTURES
MADE BY NATURE BETTER?
SO WE'VE BEEN
SORTING STRUCTURES
INTO TWO
DIFFERENT GROUPS,
THOSE MADE BY NATURE, AND
THOSE MADE BY HUMANS.
BUT THERE ARE LOTS OF
OTHER WAYS TO SORT STRUCTURES.
DID YOU KNOW THAT?
YOU COULD SORT THEM
BY THEIR PURPOSE.
LET'S LOOK AT SOME
STRUCTURES THAT I BOUGHT,
AND WE'LL SEE HOW ELSE
WE CAN SORT STRUCTURES.
I'LL PUT MYSELF DOWN
HERE IN THE CORNER.
NOW, I'VE GOT
TWO STRUCTURES.

Carla places two bars of soap on the blue sheet of paper.

Carla says I HOPE YOU CAN
SEE THAT ONE.
IT'S KIND OF THE SAME
COLOUR AS THE PAPER.
THOSE ARE BOTH
BARS OF SOAP.
SO THEY HAVE THE SAME
PURPOSE, DON'T THEY?
OR THE SAME JOB.
WE USE BOTH OF THOSE
TO WASH OUR HANDS
OR OUR BODIES WITH, SO
THEY HAVE THE SAME JOB.
BUT THEY ARE
DIFFERENT COLOURS.
SO THAT'S A WAY WE COULD
SORT OUR STRUCTURES.
WE COULD SORT THEM INTO
WHITE STRUCTURES
AND BLUE
STRUCTURES, RIGHT?
YOU KNOW WHAT?
THESE BARS OF SOAP ALSO
SMELL DIFFERENTLY.
SO WE COULD SORT THEM
INTO STRUCTURES THAT
SMELL LIKE IVORY SOAP,
AND STRUCTURES THAT
SMELL LIKE IRISH
SPRING SOAP, OKAY?
AND LET'S SEE, WE COULD
ALSO SORT THEM BY SIZE.
BECAUSE THIS ONE, THIS
IVORY SOAP IS BIGGER
THAN THE IRISH SPRING.
SO WE COULD SORT THEM
INTO LARGE STRUCTURES
AND SMALLER STRUCTURES.
ALL RIGHT?
YOU KNOW WHAT
ELSE WE COULD DO?
HMM, LET'S LOOK
AT ANOTHER ONE,
AND THEN WE'LL GO BECAUSE
WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME.
THIS WEEK, YOU'RE GOING TO
BE SORTING STRUCTURES
BY ALL THOSE DIFFERENT
TYPES OF THINGS.
BY THEIR JOBS, BY THEIR
COLOURS, BY THEIR SIZES.
LOTS OF DIFFERENT
WAYS, OKAY,
OF SORTING STRUCTURES.
LET'S LOOK AT ONE MORE,
AND THEN WE'LL GO.
HERE'S ONE.
HERE'S A STRUCTURE, AND
THERE'S ANOTHER STRUCTURE.

Carla places a yellow saw and a yellow marker on the blue sheet of paper.

Carla says NOW, THOSE STRUCTURES
HAVE THE SAME COLOUR,
DON'T THEY?
THEY'RE BOTH SORT OF AN
ORANGEY YELLOWY COLOUR
LIKE A SCHOOL BUS.
BUT THEY ARE DEFINITELY
NOT THE SAME SHAPE,
ARE THEY?
NO.
THIS ONE IS LONG, AND
THIS ONE HAS GOT A
REALLY NEAT SHAPE.
THIS IS A SAW.
AND THEY DON'T HAVE
THE SAME JOB, DO THEY?
BECAUSE THIS ONE
IS A SAW.
THIS IS FOR
CUTTING WOOD.
AND THIS ONE IS
A MARKER.
IT'S FOR WRITING.
I CAN'T WRITE WITH THE
SAW VERY WELL, CAN I?
NO, DOESN'T WORK.
SO THEY HAVE
DIFFERENT JOBS,
AND DIFFERENT SHAPES,
AND DIFFERENT SIZES.
THIS ONE'S BIG AND
THIS ONE'S SMALLER.
BUT THEY HAVE
THE SAME COLOUR.
ISN'T THAT
INTERESTING?
SO WE COULD SORT THEM INTO
LOTS OF DIFFERENT WAYS.
WE COULD SORT THEM INTO
YELLOW THINGS ON ONE SIDE,
AND NOT YELLOW
THINGS OVER HERE.
OR WE COULD SORT THEM
INTO SAWS AND MARKERS.
OR BIG THINGS AND
LITTLE THINGS.
OKAY, AS YOU CAN SEE,
THERE ARE LOTS OF WAYS
TO SORT STRUCTURES, AND
YOU'RE GOING TO BE
SORTING THEM IN ALL
DIFFERENT KINDS OF WAYS.
AND I CAN'T WAIT TO
SEE YOU NEXT WEEK.
IT'S GOING TO
BE VERY FUN.
SO GET TO WORK, AND I
THINK YOU'LL BE SENDING ME
SOME OF YOUR WORK AGAIN SO
I CAN SHOW IT ON TV.
I REALLY HAD FUN TODAY.
I HOPE YOU DID.
IT WAS FUN TO ACTUALLY
TALK TO YOU ON THE PHONE.
AND YOU GOT TO USE THE
PHONE TO DO SOME
MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS,
AND THAT'S GREAT.
AND WE'LL SEE
YOU NEXT WEEK.
BYE FOR NOW.

As Carla speaks she picks up the phone.

Carla says DON'T FORGET TO
LOG OFF, OKAY?
I FORGOT TO
TELL YOU THAT.
WHEN YOU GO, YOU HAVE TO
PICK UP YOUR PHONE
AND DIAL #7, OKAY?
AND THEN SOMEONE WILL
SAY, ARE YOU SURE
YOU WANT TO LOG OFF, OR
SOMETHING LIKE THAT,
AND YOU PRESS 1 TO SAY
YES, I REALLY DO WANT
TO LOG OFF, OKAY?
YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE YOU
LOG OFF BEFORE YOU GO.
I'LL PUT THE INSTRUCTIONS
UP ON THE SCREEN
TO REMIND YOU.
BYE FOR NOW.

A blue slate appears on screen. It shows a human outline holding a big phone and a text that reads “Please remember to log off! Pick up handset. Press number sign then seven. Press 1 to confirm. Hang up headset. See you next time!”

WELCOME BACK TO THE
VIRTUAL CLASSROOM.
IT'S GREAT TO BE
HERE THIS WEEK.
AND THIS WEEK, I'M
VERY EXCITED BECAUSE
WE CAN USE THE PHONES THAT
ARE ON YOUR DESK THIS WEEK.
THE INTERNET IS FIXED,
AND WE DON'T HAVE TO
WORRY ABOUT THAT.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO LINE
UP FOR A PHONE NOW.
SO IF YOU HEAR
YOUR PHONE RING,
IT'S IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO
PICK IT UP RIGHT AWAY
AND SAY HELLO, SO
I CAN HEAR YOU
AND KNOW YOU'RE CONNECTED.
BECAUSE OTHERWISE, I HAVE
TO WAIT AND SEE IF
YOU ARE CONNECTED, AND I
LIKE TO HEAR YOUR VOICE.
SO BE VERY STRONG
AND SAY HELLO.
AND I THINK FLAMBOROUGH
IS LOGGING IN,
SO KEEP UP THE
GOOD WORK.
NOW, WHAT WE'RE GOING
TO DO TODAY IS WE'RE
GOING TO DO MORE STUFF
WITH STRUCTURES.
AND I'D LIKE TO
START BY SAYING THAT
BEAUTIFUL WORD AGAIN.
IT'S LOVELY.
STRUCTURES.
ALL THOSE S'S.
I LOVE THAT.
SO I'M GOING TO CALL
SOMEBODY FIRST.
AND WHAT I WANT YOU TO
DO IS PICK UP YOUR PHONE
RIGHT AWAY AS SOON AS
YOU HEAR IT RINGING
AND SAY HELLO.
SO PICK UP THAT PHONE.
BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO
SAY STRUCTURES TOGETHER.
AND WE'RE GOING TO SAY IT
SO EVERYBODY CAN HEAR.
SOMEBODY THERE?
IS THIS TIMOTHY?

Timothy says HELLO.

Carla says HI.

Timothy says HI.

Carla says IS THIS TIMOTHY?

Timothy says YES.

Carla says HI, TIMOTHY.
HOW ARE YOU TODAY?

Timothy says GOOD.

Carla says HAVE YOU GOT
SNOW THERE TODAY?

Timothy says YES.

Carla says YOU DO?
LUCKY YOU.
WE DON'T HAVE
ANY SNOW YET.
LOTS OF SNOW?

Timothy says ONLY A LITTLE BIT.

Carla says ONLY A LITTLE BIT.
ENOUGH TO MAKE A
SNOWMAN MAYBE?

Timothy say NO.

Carla says NO, NOT REALLY?
OKAY.
BUT IT'S NICE TO SEE
SNOW ANYWAY, ISN'T IT?
FIRST SNOW IS ALWAYS FUN.

As Carla speaks she shows the phone.

Carla says OKAY, TIMOTHY, WHAT
I WANT YOU TO DO IS
I WANT YOU TO TAKE YOUR
HANDSET OF YOUR PHONE,
AND I WANT YOU TO HOLD IT
OUT LIKE THIS TOWARDS
THE CLASSROOM, THE REST OF
THE STUDENTS IN YOUR CLASS
BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO
SAY STRUCTURES TOGETHER.
IS EVERYBODY READY IN
YOUR CLASS, DO YOU THINK?

Timothy says YES.

Carla says OKAY.
LET'S DO THAT NOW.
YOU HOLD THE PHONE OUT,
AND I'LL COUNT TO THREE.
ONE, TWO, THREE.

Timothy’s classmates say STRUCTURES!

Carla says VERY GOOD.
YOU GUYS ARE ALL
AWAKE THIS MORNING.
I COULD HEAR
THAT VERY WELL.
THAT'S EXCELLENT.
NOW, I'M GOING TO GO
TO ANOTHER SCHOOL NOW.
I'M GOING TO CALL
SOMEBODY ELSE BECAUSE
WE'RE GOING TO SPELL
THE WORD STRUCTURES.
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU
REMEMBER HOW WE DID THAT.
BUT IT'S SUCH
A GREAT WORD,
I THINK WE SHOULD
SPELL IT TOGETHER.
SO PICK UP YOUR
PHONE RIGHT AWAY,
SOON AS YOU HEAR IT
RING, AND SAY HELLO.
I HEAR SOMEBODY COMING.
HELLO?

Robbie says HI.

Carla says HI.
WHO'S THIS?

Robbie says ROBBIE.

Carla says HI, ROBBIE.
HAVE YOU GOT SNOW
AT YOUR SCHOOL?

Robbie says A LITTLE BIT.

Carla says OH, THAT'S GREAT.
WE DON'T HAVE ANY
SNOW HERE IN TORONTO.
I HAVEN'T LOOKED
OUTSIDE FOR A WHILE,
MAYBE IT'S
SNOWING OUT THERE NOW.
OKAY, ROBBIE, SAME
INSTRUCTIONS I GAVE TIMOTHY.
I WANT YOU TO HOLD YOUR
PHONE OUT LIKE THIS.
BUT INSTEAD OF
SAYING STRUCTURES,
WE'RE GOING TO SPELL IT.
SO I'M GOING TO
DISAPPEAR FOR A SECOND
AND WE'RE GOING TO LOOK
AT A DIFFERENT SCREEN.
THERE'S THE WORD
STRUCTURES.

A blue slide appears on screen with a caption that reads “structures.”

Carla says SO HOLD YOUR
PHONE OUT, ROBBIE,
AND WE'LL SPELL
STRUCTURES TOGETHER.
IS EVERYBODY READY
AT SOUTHWOOD SCHOOL?
PEOPLE AT OTHER SCHOOLS
CAN DO THIS, TOO.
HERE WE GO.
STARTING WITH-

Robbie’s classmates spell the word S...
T...
R...
U...
C...
T...
U...
R...
E...
S!

Carla says ALL RIGHT.
YOU GUYS ARE
GOOD SPELLERS.
AND YOU'RE ALL SO
LIVELY THIS MORNING.
I CAN HEAR YOU
VERY WELL.
THAT'S GREAT.
OKAY, BEFORE WE GET GOING,
WE'RE GOING TO TAKE SOME
TIME AND DO SOMETHING WE
DIDN'T GET TO DO LAST TIME
BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HAVE
THE PHONES WORKING.
SO THERE'S SOMETHING YOU
CAN DO WITH YOUR PHONE.
IT'S CALLED A MULTIPLE
CHOICE QUESTION,
WHICH MEANS YOU HAVE
A COUPLE OF CHOICES,
AND YOU DECIDE WHICH ONE
YOU THINK IS THE RIGHT ANSWER,
AND YOU PRESS THE
NUMBER ON YOUR PHONE
THAT YOU THINK IS
THE RIGHT ANSWER.
SO LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT
YOU'RE GOING TO DO
WITH YOUR PHONE.
LOOK AT THIS.

The phone shows on screen.

Carla continues I'M GOING TO GIVE
YOU TWO CHOICES.
YOU'RE GOING TO PICK UP
YOUR PHONE LIKE THAT.
JUST PUT IT OFF TO
THE SIDE BECAUSE
YOU DON'T HAVE TO
TALK FOR THIS ONE.
AND IF YOU THINK NUMBER 1
IS THE RIGHT ANSWER,
YOU WOULD PRESS
NUMBER 1.

Carla shows a big rock.

Carla continues DON'T DO IT NOW 'CAUSE
WE'RE NOT READY YET.
BUT WHEN YOU
SEE THE CHOICES,
YOU CAN EITHER
PRESS NUMBER 1,
OR IF YOU THINK NUMBER 2
IS THE RIGHT ANSWER,
YOU PRESS
NUMBER 2, OKAY?

Carla shows a pair of scissors.

Carla continues AND THEN YOU JUST HANG
YOUR PHONE BACK UP.
SO THAT'S
WHAT YOU DO.
NOW, I'M GOING TO
GIVE YOU YOUR CHOICES.
LET ME GET THE
QUESTION READY.
I'VE GOT A COMPUTER
THAT KEEPS TRACK
OF ALL THE ANSWERS SO WE
KNOW HOW WE ANSWERED, OKAY?
LET'S SEE.
I'VE GOT TWO THINGS.
SO THE FIRST THING,
NOW THINK ABOUT THIS
CAREFULLY BECAUSE YOU
CAN'T CHANGE YOUR MIND
ONCE YOU'VE PRESSED THE
BUTTONS, YOU'RE STUCK.
SO THE FIRST
THING IS THIS.
I HOPE YOU CAN
SEE THAT OKAY.
I'M GOING TO PUT IT
UNDER THE OTHER CAMERA
SO YOU CAN SEE IT BETTER.

Carla places both structures on a piece of paper with numbers one and two.

Carla says AND THE QUESTION IS, IF
YOU THINK THIS IS
MADE BY NATURE,
PRESS NUMBER 1.
AND IF YOU THINK THESE
ARE MADE BY NATURE,
PRESS NUMBER 2.
LOOK AT THEM UNDER
THE OTHER CAMERA,
AND YOU CAN START
PRESSING WHEN YOU
THINK YOU KNOW THE
RIGHT ANSWER.
SO IF YOU THINK THIS IS
MADE BY NATURE, PRESS 1.
IF YOU THINK THIS IS MADE
BY NATURE, PRESS 2.
I SEE PEOPLE ARE RACING
TO THE PHONES, SO GOOD.
LOTS OF PEOPLE ANSWERING.
PICK UP THE PHONE AND
PRESS THE NUMBER THAT
YOU THINK IS
MADE BY NATURE.
THIS ONE, NUMBER 1, OR
THIS ONE, NUMBER 2.
HALF THE PEOPLE HAVE
ANSWERED SO FAR.
I CAN TELL THAT
FROM A COMPUTER
I'VE GOT HERE
THAT SHOWS ME.
AND I'M GOING TO SHOW YOU
WHAT THE COMPUTER LOOKS LIKE.
WE'LL WAIT FOR COUPLE
MORE PEOPLE TO ANSWER.
SO NUMBER 1,
OR NUMBER 2.
WHICH ONE IS
MADE BY NATURE?
THIS ONE, OR
THIS ONE?
HMM...
OKAY, ALMOST EVERYBODY
HAS ANSWERED,
SO WE'RE GOING TO
TAKE A LOOK NOW.
THIS THING HERE IS
CALLED A BAR GRAPH.

A bar graph appears on screen titled “Question No: 2.”
The left column reads “The structure is made by: !. nature, 2. Humans.”

Carla says AND THIS GREEN ONE
IS ALL THE ANSWERS,
ALL THE PEOPLE WHO
ANSWERED NUMBER 1.
SO EVERYBODY WHO THOUGHT
THIS WAS MADE BY NATURE.
AND EVERYBODY WHO THOUGHT
THE SECOND ONE WAS MADE
BY NATURE IS RIGHT HERE.
SO THIS IS 5 PEOPLE.
NOT AS MANY.
AND 36 PEOPLE SAID THIS
ONE WAS MADE BY NATURE.
AND IN FACT, THIS ONE
IS CORRECT BECAUSE,
THE ROCK IS
MADE BY NATURE.
YOU'RE RIGHT.
THIS IS A ROCK, AND
IT'S MADE BY NATURE.
AND THE SCISSORS
ARE MADE BY HUMANS.
AND WE MAKE THESE SO WE
CAN CUT PAPER WITH THEM,
OKAY.
LET'S TRY THAT
ONE AGAIN.
WE'LL DO A DIFFERENT
QUESTION THIS TIME, OKAY?
NOW REMEMBER, YOU'VE GOT
TO THINK CAREFULLY.
I WANT TO GO TO A
DIFFERENT QUESTION
AND SEE WHICH ONE
IS MADE BY NATURE.
NOW, THIS ONE IS A
BIT TRICKY, OKAY?
YOU'VE GOT TO THINK
REALLY CAREFULLY, OKAY?
SO LET'S LOOK
UNDER THE CAMERA.
IF YOU THINK THAT THIS
ONE IS MADE BY NATURE,
YOU PRESS NUMBER 1.

Carla places a pencil by number 1.

Carla says BUT IF YOU THINK THIS
ONE IS MADE BY NATURE,
YOU PRESS NUMBER 2.

Carla places a small branch by number 2.

Carla continues OKAY, SO THINK ABOUT IT
BEFORE YOU PRESS
BECAUSE YOU CAN'T
CHANGE YOUR MIND.
IF YOU'VE GOT A PARTNER,
YOU BETTER CHECK
WITH YOUR PARTNER AND
SEE WHAT YOU THINK.
SO IF YOU THINK THIS
IS MADE BY NATURE, PRESS 1.
IF YOU THINK THIS IS MADE
BY NATURE, YOU PRESS 2.
AND EVERYBODY IS RACING
TO THE PHONES AGAIN.
WE'VE GOT QUITE
A FEW ANSWERS.
THAT'S VERY GOOD.
OKAY, LET'S TAKE A LOOK
BECAUSE WE'VE GOT
ALMOST EVERYBODY
FINISHED ANSWERING.
SO WE'LL TAKE A LOOK.
THERE'S THE QUESTION.

An aqua-colored slide appears titled “Question No:3.”

Beneath that there is a bar graph and a caption reads “This structure is made by: 1.humans, 2.nature.”

Carla says 83 PERCENT OF THE
PEOPLE HAVE ANSWERED.
THAT'S ALMOST EVERYBODY.
AND HERE WE GO.

Another bar graph appears on screen showing the results.

Carla says WE'VE GOT 3
PEOPLE SAID THAT
THE PENCIL WAS
MADE BY NATURE.
AND 36
PEOPLE SAID
THE STICK IS
MADE BY NATURE.
IN FACT, THE STICK
IS MADE BY NATURE,
AND THE PENCIL IS
MADE BY HUMANS.
THAT'S A TRICKY
ONE, ISN'T IT?
SO LET'S GO OVER HERE.
AND WE'LL LOOK AT THOSE
AND THINK ABOUT THAT.
THIS IS MADE BY NATURE.
THIS STICK
GROWS ON A TREE.
IT'S PART OF A TREE.
I JUST BROKE IT OFF.
ACTUALLY, I FOUND
IT ON THE GROUND.
I DIDN'T BREAK
IT OFF THE TREE.
BUT IT CAME
FROM A TREE.
THIS PENCIL, THIS
IS THE TRICKY PART,
IS MADE FROM A STICK.
SO SOMEBODY TOOK A STICK,
AND THEY SHAPED IT
AND PAINTED IT AND PUT
SOME GRAPHITE IN IT,
AND PUT AN ERASER
ON THE END,
AND THAT'S MADE
BY HUMANS NOW.
SO WE USED SOMETHING
MADE BY NATURE
TO MAKE THE PENCIL.
BUT THIS IS REALLY
MADE BY HUMANS.
AND THIS IS
MADE BY NATURE.
THAT'S TRICKY,
ISN'T IT?
LOTS OF THINGS WE MAKE
AS HUMANS START
OUT AS SOMETHING
MADE BY NATURE.
AND WE CHANGE THEM SO
WE CAN USE THEM FOR
A DIFFERENT PURPOSE.
WE CAN'T USE A STICK,
REALLY, FOR WRITING,
BUT WE CAN USE A PENCIL
FOR WRITING, CAN'T WE?
THAT'S GREAT.
ALL RIGHT, I'M REALLY
EXCITED BECAUSE
I HAVE SOME OF YOUR
ARTWORK TODAY.
SOME OF THE WORK
YOU DID LAST WEEK.
AND I'M GOING TO SHOW
IT UNDER THE CAMERA.
SO WHEN I CALL YOU TO
ASK YOU ABOUT YOUR WORK,
PLEASE ANSWER YOUR PHONE
RIGHT AWAY BECAUSE
WE'VE GOT LOTS OF
THINGS TO LOOK AT.
AND I WANT TO GET THROUGH
THEM FAIRLY QUICKLY
BECAUSE WE HAVE LOTS
OF STUFF TO DO TODAY.
SO I'M GOING
TO PHONE FIRST,
ANDREW AT
FLAMBOROUGH SCHOOL.
LET'S SEE IF I CAN
FIND ANDREW'S PICTURE,
AND I'LL PUT IT
UNDER THE CAMERA.

Andrew work appears on screen.

Carla says LET'S LOOK AT
ANDREW'S PICTURE.
HI, ANDREW.
HOW ARE YOU TODAY?

Andrew says GOOD.

Carla says BEFORE I FORGET TO ASK
YOU, IS KELLY SICK TODAY?
SHE'S NOT HERE?

Andrew says WHAT?

Carla says IS KELLY NOT
AT SCHOOL TODAY?

Andrew says NO, SHE'S AT SCHOOL.

Carla says OH, 'CAUSE SHE'S
NOT LOGGED ON.
'CAUSE I HAVE HER
PICTURE, TOO.
MAYBE SHE CAN CALL ME,
AND THEN I'LL KNOW
WHERE SHE IS, AND THEN I
CAN CALL HER BACK, OKAY?

Andrew says OKAY.

Carla says CAN'T SEEM TO FIND HER.
BUT ANYWAY, ANDREW,
THIS IS YOUR STUFF.
THIS IS GREAT.
VERY GOOD PICTURES.
LET ME SEE NOW.
THIS ONE HERE, THAT'S
A COMPUTER, RIGHT?

Andrew says RIGHT.

Carla says AND WHO'S THAT MADE BY?
NATURE OR HUMANS?

Andrew says HUMANS.

Carla says HUMANS.
DO YOU HAVE A COMPUTER
AT YOUR SCHOOL?

Andrew says YEAH.

Carla says YEAH, YOU DO.
OKAY, LET'S LOOK AT ONE
OF THESE OTHER ONES HERE.
LET'S SEE, THAT
ONE THERE.
WHAT'S THAT?

Andrew says A TURTLE?

Carla says A TURTLE.
AND WHO MAKES THAT?
NATURE OR HUMANS?

Andrew says NATURE.

Carla says NATURE.
THAT'S RIGHT.
THAT'S GREAT.
THANKS VERY MUCH FOR
SENDING THAT IN.
THAT'S WONDERFUL
TO SEE THAT.
I'M GOING TO CALL
STEPHANIE AT FLAMBOROUGH.
I'LL PUT STEPHANIE'S
PICTURE UNDER THERE.

Stephanie’s work appears on screen.

HI, STEPHANIE.

Stephanie says HI.

Carla says HOW ARE YOU?

Stephanie says GOOD.

Carla says GOOD.
LET'S LOOK AT YOUR
PICTURES HERE.
I LIKE THIS ONE HERE.
THAT'S A FRIDGE.
WHAT'S THE JOB
OF A FRIDGE?
WHAT DO WE USE
A FRIDGE FOR?

Stephanie says I DON'T KNOW.

Carla says WHAT'S THE TEMPERATURE
LIKE IN A FRIDGE?
WHAT'S THE TEMPERATURE
IN A FRIDGE?
IS IT WARM OR COLD?

Stephanie says COLD.

Carla says COLD.
WE USE A FRIDGE TO KEEP
OUR FOOD COLD, RIGHT?
ALL STRUCTURES HAVE
A PURPOSE, OR A JOB.
SO WE HAVE TO
REMEMBER THAT.
LET'S SEE WHAT
OTHER STRUCTURES?
YOU'VE GOT A BEE.
THAT'S A GREAT BEE.
I LIKE THAT.
DON'T WANT TO HAVE THAT
BUZZING AROUND MY HEAD.
THANKS FOR SENDING
IN YOUR PICTURE.
SOMEONE AT FLAMBOROUGH, CAN
YOU HAVE KELLY CALL ME
SO I CAN TALK TO KELLY
ABOUT HER PICTURE?
MEANWHILE, I'M GOING TO
GO TO SOMEBODY ELSE.
I HOPE THIS IS RIGHT.
IT WAS HARD TO
READ THE NAME.
I THINK IT WAS LATIFAH.

Latifah’s work shows up on screen.

Carla says SO HELLO?

Latifah says HI.

Carla says IS THIS LATIFAH?

Latifah says YES.

Carla says HI, IS THIS YOUR PICTURE?

Latifah says YEAH, IT IS.

Carla says YOUR NAME GOT CUT OFF A
LITTLE BIT AT THE TOP THERE.
YOU'VE GOT LOTS
OF PICTURES HERE.
LET'S PICK ONE.
A GATE.
THAT'S A GOOD ONE.
WHAT'S A GATE FOR?
WHAT'S THE
PURPOSE OF A GATE?

Latifah says I DON'T KNOW.

Carla says YOU DON'T KNOW?
WHERE DID YOU
SEE A GATE?
IS THERE ONE
AT YOUR HOUSE?
SPEAK UP, 'CAUSE I CAN'T
HEAR YOU VERY WELL.

Latifah says AT A HOUSE.

Carla says AT YOUR HOUSE?
I HAVE A GATE AT
MY HOUSE.
YOU KNOW WHAT I
USE MY GATE FOR?
TO KEEP MY BABY FROM
FALLING DOWN THE STAIRS.
YEAH, SO GATES ARE TO
KEEP PEOPLE OR ANIMALS
INTO THE RIGHT PLACE, AND
OUT OF THE WRONG PLACE,
I GUESS, IS A GOOD
WAY TO PUT IT.
THAT'S A GOOD ONE.
AND HERE'S ONE HERE.
I LIKE THIS ONE.
YOU REMEMBER
WHAT THAT ONE IS?

Latifah says AN ACORN.

Carla says THAT COMES OFF OF
A TREE, DOESN'T IT?
THAT'S GREAT.
THANK YOU.
OKAY, NOW, LET'S
SEE, WHO HAVE I GOT?
OH, KELLY'S CALLED ME.
SO I'M GOING TO
CALL KELLY BACK.
PUT KELLY'S
PICTURE UNDER.

Kelly’s work appears on screen.

Carla says KELLY COMES FROM
FLAMBOROUGH SCHOOL.
SAY HELLO WHEN YOU
PICK UP THE PHONE.
IS THIS KELLY?

Kelly says YEAH.

Carla says HI, KELLY.
THERE'S YOUR PICTURE
UNDER THE CAMERA.
LET'S SEE WHAT
WE'VE GOT HERE.
THERE'S ONE THAT
NOBODY ELSE PUT.
WHAT'S THAT ONE,
DO YOU REMEMBER?
CAN YOU SEE IT
VERY WELL?

Kelly says NO.

Carla says IT SAYS HERE, PAPER.
WHO MAKES PAPER?
IS IT HUMANS OR NATURE?

Kelly says HUMANS.

Carla says HUMANS MAKE PAPER.
AND WHY DO WE MAKE PAPER?

Kelly says TO WRITE ON.

Carla says TO WRITE ON,
OR TO DRAW ON.
THIS IS A PIECE OF
PAPER, ISN'T IT?
AND YOU'VE DRAWN ON IT.
LET'S SEE,
ALSO A SNAIL.
THAT'S A VERY GOOD
EXAMPLE OF A STRUCTURE
MADE BY NATURE.
GOOD PICTURE, TOO.
VERY GOOD DRAWINGS.
THANKS VERY MUCH FOR
SENDING THESE IN.
OKAY, I'M GOING TO
GO TO MY NEXT CALLER.
AND I THINK THIS
ONE IS VANESSA.
THIS NAME GOT CUT
OFF THE TOP, TOO.
I HOPE THIS IS
VANESSA'S PICTURE.

Vanessa’s work shows up on screen.

Carla says I COULD ON THE SEE A
COUPLE OF S'S AT THE END.
SO PICK UP YOUR
PHONE AND SAY HELLO
AS SOON AS IT RINGS.
HELLO, IS THIS
VANESSA?

Vanessa says YEAH.

Carla says IS THIS YOUR
PICTURE, VANESSA?

Vanessa says YEAH.

Carla says IT IS, GOOD, OKAY.
IT GOT CUT OFF
A LITTLE BIT.
LET'S SEE WHAT
YOU'VE GOT HERE?
OH, WHAT'S THIS ONE?
DO YOU REMEMBER
THAT ONE?
IT'S HARD TO SEE.
IT'S A CLOCK, ISN'T IT?
AND THAT'S MADE BY
HUMANS, ISN'T IT?

Vanessa says YEAH.

Carla says WHY DO WE MAKE A CLOCK?

Vanessa says SO WE CAN TELL TIME.

Carla says SO WE CAN TELL TIME.
OVER HERE, YOU'VE
GOT A BEAR.
THAT'S VERY GOOD.
WHAT DO YOU THINK THE
PURPOSE OF A BEAR IS?

Vanessa says I DON'T KNOW.

Carla says YOU DON'T KNOW?
I'M NOT SURE, EITHER,
BUT SOMETIMES I THINK
IT'S JUST TO SCARE PEOPLE
WHEN THEY'RE CAMPING.
YOU THINK SO?
OKAY.
WELL, LET'S SEE, WE'LL
GO TO OUR NEXT CALLER,
WHICH IS MCKENZIE.
SO MCKENZIE IS
AT SOUTHWOOD.
AND IF YOU PICK UP THE
PHONE RIGHT AWAY.
HI, MCKENZIE, I HAVE
YOUR PICTURE HERE.

McKenzie’s works shows up on screen.

Carla says DO YOU WANT TO
TAKE A LOOK AT IT?
LET'S SHOW IT UP
ON THE BIG SCREEN.
THIS IS A GOOD
ONE HERE.
DO YOU REMEMBER
WHAT THAT ONE IS?
CAN YOU SEE IT?

McKenzie says A BAG.

Carla says A BAG.
THAT'S A GREAT
EXAMPLE OF SOMETHING
THAT'S MADE BY HUMANS.
WHY WOULD WE MAKE A BAG?

McKenzie says SO YOU CAN
CARRY THINGS IN.

Carla says SO YOU CAN
CARRY THINGS IN.
THAT'S RIGHT.
WHAT'S THIS OTHER ONE
ON THE BOTTOM HERE,
ON THE OTHER SIDE?

McKenzie says DIRT.

Carla says DIRT.
WHAT'S DIRT MADE BY?
HUMANS OR NATURE?

McKenzie says NATURE.

Carla says NATURE.
AND WHAT'S THE
PURPOSE OF DIRT?

McKenzie says SO YOU CAN PLANT THINGS.

Carla says THAT'S RIGHT.
YOU CAN PLANT
THINGS IN DIRT.
THAT'S GREAT.
YOU KNOW WHAT, SOMETIMES I
THINK DIRT IS JUST TO GET
YOU DIRTY, BUT YOU KNOW,
ONLY AFTER YOU'VE BEEN
PLANTING THINGS, YOU COME
OUT AND YOU HAVE DIRT
ALL OVER YOUR
HANDS, DON'T YOU?
THANKS FOR
CALLING, MCKENZIE.
NOW, I'M GOING TO CALL
JEREMY BECAUSE
I'VE GOT JEREMY
ON MY LIST.
LET'S SEE, PICK
UP YOUR PHONE.
IS THIS JEREMY?

Jeremy says HI.

Carla says HI.
LET'S LOOK AT YOUR
PICTURE, JEREMY.
YOU'VE GOT A GOOD ONE
HERE AT THE BOTTOM.
WHAT'S THAT ONE THERE?

Jeremy’s work shows up on screen.

Jeremy says A TOY.

Carla says A TOY.
WHAT KIND OF TOY IS THAT?

Jeremy says A BAT.

Carla says PARDON ME?

Jeremy says A BAT.

Carla says THAT'S A NEAT TOY.
AND YOU KNOW WHAT?
TOYS HAVE A
PURPOSE, DON'T THEY?
WHAT'S THE
PURPOSE OF A TOY?

Jeremy says YOU CAN PLAY WITH IT.

Carla says YOU CAN PLAY WITH IT.
THAT'S RIGHT.
LET'S SEE WHAT ELSE
YOU'VE GOT OVER HERE.
HOW ABOUT THIS
ONE RIGHT UP HERE?

Jeremy says THE WORLD.

Carla says THE WORLD.
WHAT'S THE PURPOSE
OF THE WORLD?

Jeremy says IT'S MADE BY NATURE.

Carla says IT'S MADE BY NATURE.
YOU'RE RIGHT.
THAT'S GREAT.
AND WE LIVE ON THE
WORLD, DON'T WE?
IT'S A GOOD THING
WE HAVE THE WORLD.
OTHERWISE, WHERE
WOULD WE LIVE
IF WE DIDN'T HAVE
THE WORLD?
I'M GOING TO CALL
PAGE NOW AT SOUTHWOOD.
LET'S SEE WHAT
PAIGE HAS GOT.
HI, PAIGE.

Paige’s work shows up on screen.

Paige says HI.

Carla says THIS IS YOUR
PICTURE UP ON THE TV.
LET'S SEE WHAT
YOU'VE GOT HERE.
THERE'S A GOOD ONE.
WHAT'S THAT ONE?

Paige says A CUP.

Carla says A CUP.
WHAT'S THE
PURPOSE OF A CUP?

Paige says YOU CAN DRINK OUT OF IT.

Carla says YOU CAN DRINK OUT OF IT.
AND I LIKE THIS ONE HERE.
IS THAT A MOUSE?

Paige says AHA.

Carla says A MOUSE.
YOU KNOW WHAT I
LIKE ABOUT THIS ONE?
MOUSE IS MADE BY
NATURE, ISN'T IT?
WHAT ABOUT THIS
ONE HERE?

Carla places a white computer mouse on the table.

Carla says THAT'S A MOUSE, TOO.
CAN YOU GUYS SEE THAT?
LET'S LOOK AT THE HOST
CAMERA, AND WE'LL SEE.
SEE THAT?
THAT'S A MOUSE, TOO.
THAT'S A COMPUTER MOUSE,
AND THAT'S MADE BY HUMANS.
BUT WE ONLY CALLED IT A
MOUSE BECAUSE IT KIND
OF LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE
MOUSE, BUT IT'S NOT.
IT'S MADE BY HUMANS.
SO WE SOMETIMES HAVE
THINGS THAT HAVE
THE SAME NAME, MADE BY
HUMANS AND MADE BY NATURE,
BUT THEY WERE
DIFFERENT, AREN'T THEY?
'CAUSE THAT'S NOT
A REAL MOUSE.
THAT'S JUST A MOUSE THAT
WE USE ON OUR COMPUTER.
THANKS FOR CALLING AND
SENDING IN ALL YOUR PICTURES.
I LOVE TO SEE THIS.
I'VE GOT TWO MORE TO SHOW,
THEN WE'RE GOING TO GO ON.
I'VE GOT SO MANY
PICTURES, THAT'S GREAT.
I'M CALLING MATTHEW
AT ST. JOHN BREBEUF.
MATTHEW K.
I'M CALLING.
SO PICK UP YOUR
PHONE, MATTHEW.
IS THIS MATTHEW?

Matthew says HI.

Carla says HI, HOW ARE YOU?

Matthew says GOOD.

Carla says DO YOU GUYS HAVE
ANY SNOW THERE?

Matthew says YEAH.

Carla says YOU DO?
OKAY.
SO EVERYBODY'S
GOT SNOW, TODAY,
I THINK, EXCEPT ME.
THAT DOESN'T
SEEM QUITE FAIR.
I MIGHT HAVE TO GO FOR
A DRIVE THIS AFTERNOON,
SEE IF I CAN
FIND SOME SNOW.
LET'S LOOK AT
YOUR PICTURE.
THERE'S A GOOD
ONE; WHAT'S THAT?

Matthew’s work shows up on screen.

Matthew says I CAN'T REMEMBER.

Carla says YOU CAN'T REMEMBER?
I THINK IT SAYS ROCKET.
WAS THERE A ROCKET
WENT UP LAST WEEK?

Matthew says YEAH.

Carla says AND WHERE DID IT GO?

Matthew says UP IN SPACE.

Carla says UP IN SPACE.
IT JUST SORT OF WENT
AROUND THE EARTH.

Matthew says YEAH.

Carla says AND THERE WAS A VERY
FAMOUS ASTRONAUT ON IT.
DO YOU REMEMBER
WHAT HIS NAME WAS?

Matthew says NO.

Carla says HIS NAME WAS JOHN GLENN.
HE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST
ASTRONAUTS TO GO UP INTO SPACE.
WHAT ABOUT THIS HERE?
WHAT'S THAT?

Matthew says MOUNTAIN.

Carla says MOUNTAIN.
THOSE ARE GOOD MOUNTAINS.
VERY GOOD DRAWINGS.
THANKS FOR
SENDING THOSE IN.
AND I'M GOING TO
CALL MY LAST PERSON.
IS MATTHEW M.
AND I DON'T THINK
MATTHEW M. IS THERE.
LOOKS LIKE HE'S
NOT THERE.
NOT CONNECTED.
OKAY, MATTHEW M.,
IF YOU'RE THERE,
YOU CAN CALL ME LATER AND
I'LL PUT YOUR PICTURE UP,
AND I'M GOING TO SHOW
ONE OTHER PICTURE
THAT DOESN'T HAVE
A NAME ON IT,
BUT I'M GOING TO SHOW
IT ANYWAY, BECAUSE
I LIKE IT VERY
MUCH, ALL RIGHT?
SO THERE'S ONE.
IT GOT CUT OFF
WITH THE FAX,
BUT THERE'S SOME
PEOPLE, AND A WORM.
THOSE ARE MADE BY NATURE.
AND A PLATE,
AND AN ERASER.
THAT'S A GOOD ONE.
WE DIDN'T HAVE
ANY OTHER ERASERS.
AND THAT'S MADE
BY HUMANS.
AND THE PURPOSE OF AN
ERASER IS SO YOU CAN
WIPE OUT YOUR
MISTAKES, RIGHT?
THAT'S GREAT.
I'M GLAD WE HAVE ERASERS
BECAUSE SOMETIMES
I MAKE MISTAKES, AND
I LIKE TO BE ABLE
TO WIPE THEM OUT SO
NOBODY CAN SEE THEM.
NOW, WE'VE BEEN TALKING
ABOUT STRUCTURES
THAT ARE MADE BY
NATURE, AND STRUCTURES
THAT ARE MADE BY HUMANS,
AND THAT ALL
STRUCTURES HAVE JOBS.
IT'S IMPORTANT WHEN
YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT
STRUCTURES TO TRY AND
THINK WHAT'S THE JOB
OF THIS STRUCTURE?
NOW, LAST WEEK, YOU CUT
OUT LOTS OF PICTURES
OF STRUCTURES OUT
OF MAGAZINES.

Carla shows the structures.

Carla continues I'VE GOT SOME HERE.
AND WHAT YOU ARE GOING
TO DO IN A FEW MINUTES,
WE'RE GOING TO STOP
AND YOU'RE GOING TO
SORT THEM INTO
PILES, OKAY?
I'M GOING TO SORT THESE
INTO PILES RIGHT NOW,
AND THEN WE'RE GOING
TO STOP FOR ABOUT FIVE
MINUTES, AND YOU'RE
GOING TO SORT YOURS.
SO I'M JUST GOING
TO DEMONSTRATE
WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO.
YOUR TEACHER HAS SOME
MASKING TAPE LIKE MINE.
THEY'RE GOING TO TAKE A
BIG PIECE OF MASKING TAPE,
AND YOU'RE GOING TO
DO THIS ALTOGETHER.
EVERYBODY IN THE CLASS
IS GOING TO PUT ALL
THESE PICTURES TOGETHER.
AND I'LL SHOW YOU HERE,
THEY'RE GOING TO PUT
THE MASKING TAPE DOWN THE
MIDDLE OF THE FLOOR, PROBABLY.

A blue paper shows on screen with a caption that reads “Nature” and a caption that reads “Humans.” Carla divides the paper into two columns by putting tape in the middle.

Carla says ON ONE SIDE, YOU'LL HAVE
STRUCTURES MADE BY NATURE,
AND ON THE OTHER
SIDE, MADE BY HUMANS.
I'LL PUT MY PICTURE THERE
SO YOU CAN SEE ME, STILL.
I'VE GOT A WHOLE
BUNCH OF THINGS HERE.
LET'S SEE.
OH, HERE'S ONE.
NOW, THAT'S A COW, OR
ACTUALLY, THAT'S A BULL.
IT'S GOT BIG HORNS.
AND THAT STRUCTURE
IS MADE BY NATURE,
SO I'LL PUT THAT
ON THIS SIDE.
AND THERE'S A CLOCK.
IT'S HARD TO SEE.
AND IT'S MADE BY HUMANS.
SO I'M GOING TO PUT
IT ON THIS SIDE.
IF I PUT ONE ON
THE WRONG SIDE,
YOU SHOULD PHONE ME AND
LET ME KNOW BECAUSE
I DON'T WANT TO
MAKE ANY MISTAKES.
THERE'S A HOT DOG, AND
THAT'S MADE BY HUMANS.
THERE'S A TOMATO, AND
THAT'S MADE BY NATURE.
AND LET'S SEE,
HERE'S SOME PEAS.
AND THOSE ARE
MADE BY NATURE.
NOW, I'M GOING
TO STOP THERE.
LET ME TAKE MY PICTURE
OUT OF THE WAY.
WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO
DO IN YOUR CLASS
IS AFTER YOU'VE SORTED
ALL YOUR PICTURES,
LET'S SAY THAT'S ALL
THE PICTURES I HAD,
YOU'RE GOING TO MATCH
THEM UP, ONE TO ONE.
SO ONE NATURE, MATCHES
WITH ONE MADE BY HUMANS,
SO THOSE TWO MATCH UP.
THEY KIND OF
CANCEL OUT, OKAY?
AND THERE'S A HOT
DOG AND A TOMATO.
THOSE WILL MATCH UP.
I'VE GOT TWO
THAT MATCH UP.
THEN I'VE GOT ONE
LEFT OVER, OKAY?
SO I HAVE MORE NATURE,
MORE STRUCTURES
MADE BY NATURE, THAN I
HAVE MADE BY HUMANS.
AND I'VE GOT
HOW MANY MORE?
I'VE GOT ONE MORE.
SO THAT'S WHAT WE'RE
GOING TO BE DOING.
YOU'RE GOING TO PUT ALL
YOUR PICTURES IN EACH
SIDE OF THE TAPE, AND
THEN YOU'RE GOING TO
MATCH THEM UP ONE TO ONE.
SO ONE NATURE MATCHES
WITH ONE MADE BY HUMANS.
AND THEN WHEN YOU
GET TO THE END,
SEE WHICH ONE
YOU HAVE MORE OF?
WHICH ONE'S LEFT OVER.
MAYBE YOU'LL HAVE LOTS
OF NATURE PICTURES
LEFT OVER, OR MAYBE
YOU'LL HAVE LOTS OF
HUMAN-MADE STRUCTURES
LEFT OVER.
THEN YOUR REPORTER IS
GOING TO CALL ME AND TELL
ME YOU'RE FINISHED, AND
I'M GOING TO ASK THEM
WHICH YOU HAVE MORE OF.
SO DON'T FORGET TO CALL
ME AS SOON AS YOU'RE FINISHED.
LET'S GET STARTED.
THE INSTRUCTIONS WILL
BE ON THE SCREEN.
CALL ME WHEN YOU'RE DONE.
ALL RIGHT.
LET'S SET THIS UP.
BYE NOW.

Carla says HELLO, EVERYBODY.
I JUST WANTED TO
LET YOU KNOW
WE'VE GOT ABOUT
30 SECONDS LEFT.
SO DON'T FORGET TO GET
THE REPORTER TO CALL ME
WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED.
A COUPLE OF SCHOOLS
ARE FINISHED.
WE'RE JUST WAITING
FOR ONE MORE.
BYE BYE.
SEE YOU SOON.
GREAT, YOU'RE
ALL BACK.
AND WE'RE READY
TO GET GOING.
SO YOU'VE HAD A
CHANCE TO SORT
ALL THOSE STRUCTURES, AND
I'M GOING TO CALL YOU
AND FIND OUT
WHICH YOU HAD MORE OF.
OKAY, I'M CALLING
FIRST DYLAN AND EMILY
FROM ST. JOHN
BREBEUF SCHOOL.
WHO'S ON THE PHONE?

Emily says EMILY.

Carla says HI, EMILY, HOW
ARE YOU?

Emily says GOOD.

Carla says GOOD.
NOW, WHICH DID
YOU HAVE MORE OF?
DID YOU HAVE
MORE STRUCTURES
MADE BY NATURE, OR
MORE MADE BY HUMANS?

Emily says MORE MADE BY HUMANS.

Carla says AND DO YOU KNOW
HOW MANY MORE?
DID YOU COUNT THEM?

Emily says NINE.

Carla says NINE MORE MADE
BY HUMANS.
OKAY, THAT'S GREAT.
THANKS VERY MUCH
FOR CALLING IN.
I'M GOING TO CALL SOMEBODY
FROM SOUTHWOOD NOW.
I'M CALLING CATHARINE
AND VANESSA.
HI, WHO'S THIS?

Catharine says CATHARINE.

Carla says CATHARINE.
OKAY, GOOD.
CATHARINE, WHICH DID
YOU HAVE MORE OF?
MADE BY NATURE,
OR MADE BY HUMANS?

Catharine says NATURE.

Carla says NATURE.

Vanessa says I HAVE THE
SAME AMOUNT.

Carla says THE SAME AMOUNT.
NINE?
NINE MORE MADE
BY NATURE.
WOW, OKAY,
THAT'S GREAT.
OR DID YOU HAVE
THE SAME BY NATURE,
AND THE SAME
BY HUMANS?

Catharine says I HAVE TWO.

Carla says YOU HAVE TWO
MADE BY NATURE?
TWO MORE MADE
BY NATURE?

Catharine says AND TWO MADE
BY HUMANS.

Carla says OH, YOU HAVE EXACTLY
THE SAME AMOUNT OF BOTH.
OH, THAT'S TRICKY.
OKAY, THANKS VERY
MUCH FOR CALLING.
I DON'T THINK I HAVE A
CALLER FROM MY OTHER SCHOOL,
SO LET'S TAKE A LOOK AND
SEE IF I CAN FIND
SOMEBODY FROM, WHO
DID I TALK TO ALREADY?
FLAMBOROUGH.
I'M GOING TO CALL
DARREN FROM FLAMBOROUGH.
DARREN, PICK
UP YOUR PHONE.
I HOPE YOU GUYS ARE
FINISHED YOUR SORTING.
SEE IF DARREN'S THERE.
HMM, I HOPE SO.
IS DARREN THERE?
NO ANSWER.
OH, DARREN, IS
THAT YOU?

Darren says YEAH.

Carla says HI, DARREN.
WHICH DID YOU HAVE
MORE OF AT YOUR SCHOOL?
DID YOU HAVE MORE
MADE BY NATURE?
OR MADE BY HUMANS?

Darren says MORE MADE FROM
HUMANS.

Carla says HUMANS.
OKAY.
AND DO YOU REMEMBER
HOW MANY MORE?

Darren says FIVE.

Carla says FIVE MORE MADE
BY HUMANS.
THAT'S GREAT.
THANKS FOR CALLING IN.
OR THANKS FOR
ANSWERING.
I CALLED YOU.
I FORGOT.
OKAY, NOW, WE
HAD, LET'S SEE,
TWO SCHOOLS HAD
MORE MADE BY HUMANS,
ONE SCHOOL HAD THE SAME
AMOUNT BY BOTH, HMM.
IT WOULD SEEM THERE ARE
MORE MADE BY HUMANS,
WOULDN'T IT?
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT?
I BET IF WE COUNTED
ALL OF THE STRUCTURES
MADE BY HUMANS IN
THE WHOLE WORLD,
AND ALL OF THE STRUCTURES
MADE BY NATURE IN
THE WHOLE WORLD, I WONDER
WHICH WE'D HAVE MORE OF?
THAT'S A REALLY HARD
QUESTION BECAUSE
THERE ARE JUST SO
MANY STRUCTURES.
AND YOU KNOW WHAT?
IT WOULD JUST
TAKE TOO LONG.
SO WE'RE NOT
GOING TO BOTHER.
WE'RE JUST GOING TO
SAY, IT DOESN'T MATTER.
WHEN WE DID OUR LIST
WE HAD MORE MADE
BY HUMANS, OKAY?
BUT IF YOU REALLY FEEL
LIKE YOU HAVE
NOTHING BETTER TO
DO THIS WEEKEND,
YOU COULD GO AND COUNT
ALL THE STRUCTURES
IN THE WORLD THAT ARE
MADE BY HUMANS,
AND ALL THE STRUCTURES
MADE BY NATURE,
AND CALL US NEXT WEEK
AND TELL US WHICH ONE
THERE IS MORE OF.
THAT'S IF YOU
HAVE ENOUGH TIME.
NOW, YOU KNOW WHAT, WE'VE
RUN OUT OF TIME FOR THIS
WEEK, SO WHAT YOU'RE
GOING TO DO BEFORE
NEXT WEEK IS YOU'RE GOING TO
DO LOTS MORE SORTING
OF STRUCTURES.
BUT YOU'RE GOING TO SORT
THEM IN DIFFERENT WAYS,
NOT JUST WHETHER THEY ARE
MADE BY NATURE OR MADE
BY HUMANS, YOU'RE GOING
TO SORT THEM BY JOB,
BY COLOUR, BY SIZE,
ALL DIFFERENT
KINDS OF WAYS.
LET'S LOOK AT A COUPLE
OF THINGS RIGHT NOW,
AND I'LL GIVE
YOU AN EXAMPLE.
HERE WE HAVE TWO
BARS OF SOAP,
IVORY AND IRISH SPRING.

Carla places two bars of soap on a sheet of paper.

Carla says NOW, THOSE ARE BOTH SOAPS.
SO I COULD PUT THEM BOTH
ON ONE SIDE IF I WANTED TO
DIVIDE THINGS THAT
HAVE THE SAME JOB
BECAUSE SOAP IS MADE
FOR WASHING WITH.
BOTH OF THESE ARE
MADE FOR WASHING WITH.
BUT MAYBE I WANTED TO SORT
BY SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
MAYBE MY RULE WOULD BE
THINGS THAT ARE WHITE,
AND THINGS THAT
ARE BLUE.
THEN THEY'D BE ON
DIFFERENT SIDES.
BECAUSE THIS
IS WHITE SOAP,
AND THIS IS
BLUE SOAP.
MAYBE I'D WANT TO SORT BY
THINGS THAT SMELL LIKE GRASS,
AND THINGS THAT SMELL
LIKE FLOWERS, OKAY?
BECAUSE THIS SOAP
SMELLS LIKE FLOWER,
AND THIS SMELLS
LIKE GRASS.
I THINK THAT'S PRETTY
MUCH ALL THE WAYS -
OH, HOW ABOUT BIG THINGS
AND SMALLER THINGS?
BECAUSE THIS ONE IS A BIT
SMALLER THAN THE
OTHER ONE, ISN'T IT?
SO BIG THINGS
ON THIS SIDE,
SMALL THINGS ON THIS SIDE.
YOU SEE, THERE ARE TONS OF
WAYS WE CAN SORT THINGS.
SO THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE
GOING TO BE DOING ALL WEEK.
AND I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO
SEE YOU AGAIN NEXT WEEK.
DON'T FORGET TO LOG
OFF BEFORE YOU GO.
HAVE I TOLD YOU HOW
TO LOG OFF YET?

Carla picks up the phone.

Carla says I DON'T THINK SO
BECAUSE WE DIDN'T
HAVE TO LOG
OFF LAST WEEK.
SO LET ME TELL YOU.
YOU HAVE TO PICK
UP YOUR PHONE,
AND YOU HAVE
TO DIAL #7.
BUT THEN LISTEN TO YOUR
PHONE BECAUSE IT'S GOING
TO SAY, ARE YOU SURE
YOU WANT TO LOG OFF?
OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
I CAN'T REMEMBER
EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAY.
AND YOU PRESS NUMBER 1
BECAUSE YOU'RE SURE
YOU WANT TO LOG OFF.
SO DO THAT BEFORE
YOU LEAVE, OKAY?
DON'T FORGET TO LOG OFF.
AND I'LL SEE
YOU NEXT WEEK.
BYE FOR NOW.

A blue slate appears on screen. It shows a human outline holding a big phone and a text that reads “Please remember to log off! Pick up handset. Press number sign then seven. Press 1 to confirm. Hang up headset. See you next time!”
