Transcript: Student Session 6B | Aug 24, 1998

(music plays)

The opening slate pops up with a countdown timer from 10 seconds. A title reads "TVO’s Virtual Classroom. Get connected." The "V" in "Virtual" is a tick, the "A" in "classroom" is an at sign with an extended loop that turns into a power cord with a plug at the end, and the first "O" in "classroom" is a spinning globe.

Missus UJ appears on screen. She’s in her forties, with shoulder. She says length curly blond hair. She’s wearing a black blazer over a striped blue shirt with a white collar.

She says HI, AND WELCOME BACK
TO LANGUAGE ALIVE.
I'M SORRY TO SAY THAT
TODAY IS OUR LAST SESSION.
BUT TODAY IS GOING TO BE GREAT
BECAUSE WE HAVE SO MUCH
LINED UP FOR YOU.
AND WITH THE THEME BEING
SUMMERTIME, AND THIS HAVING
BEEN LANGUAGE ALIVE, MY REAL
FOCUS TODAY IS TO MAKE SURE
YOU'RE GOING TO KEEP LANGUAGE
ALIVE ALL SUMMER LONG.
AND THAT'S REALLY,
REALLY IMPORTANT.
BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO GO
THIS FAR AND HAVE TO START
OVER IN SEPTEMBER.
SO WE WANT TO KEEP
IT GOING ALL SUMMER.
SO WHAT YOU SHOULD DO, BECAUSE
THERE IS GOING TO BE A LOT OF
IDEAS COMING IN FRONT OF YOU,
IS HAVE YOUR AGENDA IN FRONT.
YOU'VE GOT IT ALL SET UP WITH
THE LAST SESSION, NUMBER SIX,
AND TODAY'S DATE IS JUNE 12th.
AND AS WE GO ALONG, YOU JUST
WRITE DOWN ALL THE IDEAS THAT
COME UP, SO THIS SUMMER YOU
CAN BE VERY, VERY BUSY.
NOW, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT'S
LIKE FOR YOU WHERE YOU LIVE,
BUT CERTAINLY THIS MORNING
WHEN I WOKE UP AND IT WAS
POURING RAIN, I THOUGHT, OH,
WOULDN'T THIS JUST BE A GREAT
DAY FOR A VIDEO OR
TO GO TO A MOVIE?

A handwritten blue sheet of paper pops up. It reads "Buzz. What do you do and your friends ‘talk about’ after you see a movie or video?"

She continues
NOW, ONE OF THE THINGS WE'VE
BEEN DOING IN OUR WRITING
PROMPT WITH THE VIDEO CLIP IS
TO TEACH YOU THINGS YOU CAN
GET OUT OF MOVIES.
SO THE FIRST THING I
WANT YOU TO DO IS TO BUZZ

She remains silent for a moment and then continues.

She says
JUST FOR A MOMENT.
I'LL GIVE YOU ABOUT 30
SECONDS TO TALK TO THE PEOPLE
THAT ARE NEAR TO YOU.
AND I WANT YOU TO DO THIS:
SO TALK ABOUT THAT
JUST FOR A MOMENT.
NOW, ONE OF THE THINGS WE'VE
REALLY TRIED TO FOCUS ON WAS
IN EACH OF THE VIDEO CLIPS
WE'VE SHOWN YOU, WE'VE TRIED
TO GET YOU TO START THINKING
ABOUT DIFFERENT THINGS.
IT'S IMPORTANT WHEN YOU GET TO
BE THE AGE YOU ARE THAT YOU
DON'T COME OUT OF A MOVIE OR
SEE A VIDEO, AND IT'S JUST,
YEAH, LIKED IT, IT WAS OKAY.
BUT WHAT WE SHOULD BE DOING
IS BEING ABLE TO COMMUNICATE
AND BEING ABLE TO TALK ABOUT
THINGS, HOW DID THAT MOVIE
MAKE YOU FEEL?
OR WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT?
DID YOU LIKE THE CHARACTER?
WHAT DID YOU THINK
OF THE STORY LINE?
SO WE'VE BEEN PLAYING WITH A
LOT OF THOSE THINGS ON THE
LANGUAGE ALIVE SERIES, AND
HOPEFULLY YOU'VE PICKED UP
SOME THINGS SO THAT YOUR
COMMUNICATION WITH YOUR FRIENDS
AFTER A VIDEO OR GOING
TO A MOVIE HAS IMPROVED.
NOW, WE'RE GOING
TO DO A REVIEW.
IN THE VIDEO CLIP TODAY, YOU
ARE GOING TO SEE FOUR OF THE
VIDEOS THAT WE'VE SEEN.
NOW, LET'S TAKE A LOOK, I WANT
YOU TO SET UP FOR THE WRITING
PROMPT, SO GET OUT
A PIECE OF PAPER.
AND WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO IS,
FIRST OF ALL, FOLD THE PAPER
IN HALF.
FOLD IT IN HALF AGAIN.
AND LASTLY, THE LAST FOLD.
SO YOU HAVE A RECTANGLE THERE.
AND OPEN IT OUT, AND I'LL GIVE
YOU JUST A MOMENT TO WRITE DOWN.

She folds a pink paper sheet three times. The sheet has a list to the left that reads "Rollercoaster, Dog show, Orangutan, Octopus."

She continues
THESE ARE THE FOUR WE
ARE GOING TO REVIEW.
REMEMBER THE ROLLER COASTER.
REMEMBER THAT
FRIGHT WIG OF MINE?
WASN'T THAT RIDICULOUS?
THEN THERE WAS THE DOG
SHOW WITH THE CRAZY HAT.
THEN THERE WAS THE ORANGUTAN.
REMEMBER WE LEARNED
HOW TO SPELL THAT ONE.
AND LASTLY, WE
DID THE OCTOPUS.
SO I'LL JUST GIVE YOU A MOMENT
TO WRITE DOWN THE FOUR VIDEOS
WE ARE GOING TO REVIEW.

Again she remains silent for a moment. Next, she appears on a small window at the right bottom of the screen.

She continues
NOW, HERE'S THE TASK:
YOU ARE GOING TO APPOINT
SOMEONE AS YOUR LEADER.
NOW, THIS LEADER, YOU ARE
GOING TO, AS WE WATCH THE
VIDEO, CALL OUT WORDS.
THE PERSON THAT IS YOUR LEADER
IS GOING TO WRITE DOWN ALL
THE WORDS THAT YOU CALL OUT.
SO YOU HAVE TO SELECT SOMEONE
THAT CAN LISTEN TO YOU.
REMEMBER, ONE PERSON AT A
TIME, SO HE OR SHE CAN GET
THEM DOWN.
THAT PERSON IS GOING TO
WRITE DOWN ALL THE WORDS,
THE CHUNKS OF WORDS THAT
YOU GIVE HIM OR HER.
NOW, YOU ARE GOING TO BE
GIVING WORDS FROM THE VIDEO,
THINGS THAT MADE YOU FEEL.
YOU ARE GOING TO BE WRITING
DOWN ANYTHING THAT COMES TO
YOUR MIND OF THINGS WE
ACTUALLY DID WITH THE VIDEOS.
SO DID YOU LIKE IT?
HOW DID IT MAKE YOU FEEL?
WHAT ARE SOME REALLY GOOD
WORDS THAT COME FROM YOU TO
DESCRIBE EACH AND
EVERY ONE OF THEM.
NOW, I'M GOING TO HAVE ALL
OF THOSE LEADERS CALL IN.
SO I WANT TO HEAR FROM
ALL OF THE SCHOOLS.
AND WE HAVE COLLEGE AVENUE,
KING GEORGE, ELGIN AVENUE,
USBORNE, I WANT ONE CALL
FROM EACH ONE OF THEM.
SO GET THOSE WORDS,
AND CALL THEM IN.
SO WATCH THE VIDEO.
I THINK YOU'RE GOING
TO LOVE THE REVIEW.
[clattering and rumbling]

A video plays on screen. It shows a rollercoaster followed by a dog at a show where he collects tennis balls and carries them inside its mouth; Next, a huge tree falls after being cut in the base a man. Then, a couple of orangutans descend from a treetop while a group of men has captured one of them. The animal remains on the floor immobilized by a net. Following, in deep waters a camera follows an octopus that tries to escape.

The clips end and she appears back in the studio.

She says
WEREN'T THEY TERRIFIC?
WE HAD A LOT OF FUN
WITH THOSE, DIDN'T WE?
OKAY, I HAVE MY FIRST
CALLER ON THE LINE.
KING GEORGE, GOOD MORNING.

Malcolm says HELLO.

She says HI.
WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

Malcolm says MALCOLM.

She says OKAY, MALCOLM, WHICH ONE ARE
YOU GOING TO DO SOME WORD
COLLECTING ON?

Malcolm says THE ORANGUTAN.

She says OKAY, THE ORANGUTAN.
GIVE ME SOME WORDS YOUR
GROUP CALLED OUT TO YOU.

Malcolm says TREES.

She says OKAY.

Malcolm says LANDSCAPE.

She says OKAY.

Malcolm says DESTROYED HOME.

As Malcolm says the words she writes them on the blank space next to Orangutan.

She says GOOD.

Malcolm says ENDANGERED.

She says YES, GOOD.

Malcolm says CUTE.

She says YES, THE LITTLE
ORANGUTAN'S FACE WAS GREAT.
YOU GOT A LOT.
GOT ANY MORE?

Malcolm says CAPTURED.

She says GOOD.

Malcolm says HAIRY.
AND THEN NET.

She says GOOD, OKAY, THANKS VERY
MUCH FOR CALLING IN.
OKAY, WE'RE GOING TO HEAR.

Malcolm says THERE'S ONE MORE.
SHARP.

She says SHARP?
NO, I DON'T THINK SO.
OKAY, THAT WAS TERRIFIC.
OKAY, SO WE'VE GOT A LOT
OF REALLY GOOD WORDS.
I THOUGHT SOME OF THE GOOD
ONES HERE WERE DESTROYED,
ENDANGERED, CAPTURED.
OKAY, THAT WAS CERTAINLY SOME
OF THE THINGS WE TRIED TO
GATHER FROM THAT ONE IN OUR
THINKING OF, YOU KNOW, HOW WE
FELT AFTER THE ORANGUTAN CLIP.
OKAY, USBORNE AVENUE, WHICH
VIDEO DID YOU WANT TO FOCUS ON?
HELLO, GOOD MORNING?
JUSTIN OR COREY?

Corey says HELLO.

She says HI.
IS THIS JUSTIN?

Corey says NO, THIS IS COREY.

She says OKAY, COREY, WHICH VIDEO
DID YOU WANT TO FOCUS ON?

Corey says THE OCTOPUS.

She says OKAY.
WHAT ARE THE WORDS YOU
COLLECTED FROM YOUR TEAM?

WATER.

She says YES.

Corey says THE INKY STUFF.

She says THE INK, RIGHT.
THAT WAS TO KEEP THE
PREDATOR'S AWAY.
THAT WAS GOOD.
ANYTHING ELSE?

Corey says SUCTION CUP.

She says GOOD.

Corey says EIGHT LEGS.

She says YES.

Corey says VERY FLEXIBLE.

She says FLEXIBLE IS GOOD.
ANYTHING ELSE?

Corey says CAMO.
IT HAD CAMOUFLAGE.

She says CAMOUFLAGE, GOOD.
ANY MORE?

Corey says PREDATOR.

She says PREDATOR, GOOD.
OKAY, I'M RUNNING OUT OF
SPACE, YOU HAD SO MANY.
OKAY, GOOD.
THANK YOU FOR
CALLING THAT IN.
THERE WE'VE HEARD FROM
TWO OF OUR SCHOOLS.
WE'RE GOING TO
CONNECT AGAIN.
I THINK IT WAS FABULOUS WHAT
WE DID WITH ALL OF OUR CLIPS
WHEN WE TALKED ABOUT HOW
DID IT MAKE YOU FEEL?
WHAT DOES IT MAKE
YOU THINK OF?
AND WORDS ARE THE THINGS WE
WANT TO GET ROLLING HERE.
OKAY, NOW WE ARE GOING TO
HEAR ON THE ROLLER COASTER
AND THE DOG SHOW.
AND IF YOU HAVE ANY YOU WANT
TO CALL IN LATER, REMEMBER WE
HAVE THE 15 MINUTES AT THE END
OF THE SHOW THAT YOU COULD
CALL IN.
OKAY, JACK MINOR,
GOOD MORNING.

Jesse says HELLO.

She says HI, WHO AM I SPEAKING TO?

Jesse says JESSE.

She says OKAY, JESSE.
THE ROLLER COASTER
OR THE DOG SHOW?

Jesse says THE ROLLER COASTER.

She says GREAT.
HOW DID IT MAKE YOU FEEL?

Jesse says SUSPENSE.

She says OKAY.

Jesse says DIZZY.

She says YES.
I THINK THAT'S
TWO Z's, ISN'T IT?
REMEMBER, SPELLING DOESN'T
COUNT ON WORD COLLECTING.
EVEN IF YOU'RE THE TEACHER.
OKAY.

Jesse says EXCITEMENT.

She says THERE'S A GOOD ONE.

Jesse says FEAR.

She says GOOD.

Jesse says THRILL.

She says GOOD.

Jesse says SOMETIMES YOU CAN GET SICK.

She says SICK, YEAH.
OKAY, GOOD.
HAVE YOU GOT ANY MORE?

Jesse says YES, ONE MORE.
ADRENALINE.

She says ADRENALINE.
THAT'S A GOOD ONE.
WONDER HOW YOU
SPELL THAT ONE.
GREAT, THANKS.
THOSE WERE TERRIFIC.
OKAY, THE DOG SHOW.
WE HAVE ONE MORE SCHOOL THAT
WE WANT TO HEAR FROM HERE.
WE'LL SEE IF WE
HAVE ONE CONNECTED.
OKAY, THAT'S GOOD.
WE'VE GOT A LOT OF WORDS HERE.
WE WANT TO HEAR THE DOG SHOW.
REMEMBER WE TALKED ABOUT YOU
CAN'T TEACH AN OLD DOG
NEW TRICKS.
THAT DOG SHOW, WE DID.
OKAY, ELGIN AFTER,
GOOD MORNING.

As the callers say the words she keeps on writing them next to the main word in the board.

The Caller says HELLO.

She says HI.
HOW ABOUT SOME WORDS
ON THE DOG SHOW?

The Caller says CUTE.

She says YES.

The Caller says FUNNY.

She says YES.

The Caller says TALENTED.

She says YES, THAT'S GOOD.

The Caller says FLUFFY.
INTERESTING.

She says YES.

The Caller says BIG MOUTH.

She says YEAH, VERY.
IMAGINE PUTTING
THREE BALLS IN.
THAT'S GREAT.
OKAY, BIG MOUTH.

The Caller says CANINE.

She says YES.

The Caller says OLD.

She says VERY.
OKAY, REMEMBER THAT OLD FACE?
THAT WAS SO CUTE.
OKAY, WE WILL TAKE ONE
MORE FROM COLLEGE AVENUE.
THIS HAS BEEN A
REALLY GOOD IDEA.
WE'LL HAVE TO DO THIS NEXT
YEAR WHERE WE APPOINT ONE
PERSON, AND RIGHT OFF THE BAT
WE GET TO HEAR FROM EACH AND
EVERY SCHOOL.
BECAUSE ALL OF YOU, I KNOW
YOU'VE HAD SO MANY CALLS YOU
HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO GET
THROUGH, AND THAT'S WHY
WE STAY ON IN THE END.
BOY, THIS IS A GOOD IDEA.
I'VE HEARD FROM EVERYBODY.
OKAY, COLLEGE AVENUE?
HI, GOOD MORNING.

Chris says HELLO.

She says HI.
WHO AM I SPEAKING TO?

Chris says CHRIS.

She says HI, CHRIS.
OKAY, SINCE WE'VE HEARD, WE'VE
GOT ALL THE BOXES FILLED,
WHY DON'T YOU GIVE ME
ONE WORD FROM EACH ONE?
HOW ABOUT ROLLER COASTER?

Chris says I GOT LOOPY.

She says THAT CERTAINLY WAS.
AND THE DOG SHOW?

Chris says LEAPY.

She says LEAPY, OKAY.
AND THE ORANGUTAN?

Chris says SAD.

She says YEAH.
THAT WAS REALLY SAD
AT THE END, WASN'T IT?
AND WHAT ABOUT THE OCTOPUS.

Chris says EIGHT.

She says EIGHT.
OKAY, GOOD.
OKAY, THANKS
FOR CALLING IN.
OKAY, WE'VE HEARD
FROM ALL OF YOU.
AND THAT'S TERRIFIC WE'RE ALL
CONNECTED AND WE'RE ALL WITH
US, AND LANGUAGE IS ALIVE,
AND WE'VE HAD A GOOD REVIEW.
NOW, THIS WHOLE SHOW IS
GOING TO BE ABOUT INITIALLY
REVIEWING WHAT WE HAVE DONE
THROUGHOUT THE SESSIONS.
NOW, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU CAN
SEE ALL BEHIND ME, BUT BEHIND
ME I HAVE A WHOLE COLLECTION
OF ALL THE FABULOUS THINGS
THAT YOU HAVE SENT IN.

She turns around to see the many drawings and letters sticked to the wall behind her.

She continues
NOW, WE HAVE THE ORANGUTAN, WE
HAVE ALL KINDS OF THINGS THAT
CAME IN THIS WEEK FROM THE
PINES, AND YOU CAN SEE ALL
THE BOOK BURGERS THEY HAVE
SENT IN, AND THERE'S A WHOLE
SPACE RIDE HERE ON SPACE
MOUNTAIN, GOING UP IN A VERY
LARGE DISPLAY.
AND YOU CAN STILL SEE SOME
THINGS FROM ELGIN AVENUE,
AND USBORNE'S IDEAS,
THEY'RE ALL THERE.
WE'VE ENJOYED THEM SO MUCH.
I GET TO KNOW YOU A LITTLE BIT
ON THE PHONES, BUT I GET TO
KNOW YOU A WHOLE LOT BETTER
WHEN YOU SEND THINGS IN.
AND I THINK THAT'S BEEN PART
OF THE SUCCESS OF THIS SERIES.
YOU HAVE BEEN GETTING ACTIVE
IN THE CLASSROOM AND SENDING
THINGS IN.
AND WE'VE REALLY ENJOYED ALL
THE THINGS YOU HAVE SENT.
SO CONGRATULATIONS FROM ALL OF
YOU, AT ALL OF THESE SCHOOLS.
WE HAVE REALLY ENJOYED THEM.
NOW, WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO
IS REVIEW SOME OF THE VIRTUAL
CHALLENGES, AND AT CERTAIN
POINTS, I WILL ASK YOU TO CALL
IN AND SAY, OKAY, WHAT
WORKED IN YOUR CLASSROOM?
WHAT WAS IT FROM THE SHOW THAT
YOU DID, FROM THAT SPECIFIC
SHOW, WHAT WORKED FOR YOU?
AND I HAVE A NUMBER OF
THINGS I'LL SHARE WITH YOU
AS WE GO ALONG.
SO LET'S TAKE A LOOK, AND
REMEMBER THE FIRST ONE
FOLLOWING THE VIDEO ON THE
ROLLER COASTER, WE HAD A LOT
OF SUCCESS WITH THAT ONE.

A blue paper sheet appears on screen. It reads "Video: Where, What, Who" and it connects with "Book: Setting, Plot, Character," respectfully. Again, she appears in a small window at the bottom of the screen.

She says
AND THAT WAS ALL ABOUT
READING FOLLOW-UPS.
AND REMEMBER WE STARTED
TALKING ABOUT, FIRST OF ALL,
THE THREE W's.
WHEN YOU LOOK AT A VIDEO, OR
WHEN YOU LOOK AT ANYTHING, YOU
HAVE TO ESTABLISH, AS SOMEONE
THAT'S REVIEWING SOMETHING,
WHO'S INVOLVED, WHERE ARE
THEY, AND WHAT'S HAPPENING?
AND THEN WE APPLIED THAT TO
SETTING, PLOT AND CHARACTER.
REMEMBER THAT VIRTUAL
CHALLENGE I GAVE YOU WAS TO
ACTUALLY CREATE A BOOK BURGER.

A new sheet shows the drawing of a burger. To the left, a list of the ingredients and to the right a list of the information to include.

She continues
WHICH SEEMED LIKE A CRAZY
IDEA, BUT BOY, WE SURE HAD A
LOT OF RESPONSE FROM THAT.
NOW, THE PINES AVENUE SENT A
WHOLE PACKAGE, PINES SENIOR
PUBLIC, THEY SENT IN A WHOLE
PACKAGE, AND I THINK MOST KIDS
IN THE GRADE SEVEN CLASS THERE
COMPLETED A BOOK BURGER.
AND THEY ARE ALL ON DISPLAY
BEHIND ME, AND WE REALLY
ENJOYED THEM.

She shows a series of small pieces of paper the size and shape of the ingredients for a burger that contain different information.

She continues
AND I THOUGHT I WOULD JUST
SHARE A COUPLE WITH YOU ON THE
GRAPHICS CAMERA THIS MORNING.
REMEMBER WHEN WE DID MAKING
PRESENTATIONS, AND YOU SAW A
NUMBER OF MY KIDS THAT WERE
ACTUALLY ROLE-PLAYING.
THE REASON I'M SHOWING YOU
THIS IS KIND OF A FOLLOW-UP
TO THAT.
AND THIS IS FROM RUSSELL.
AND RUSSELL, THIS IS GREAT.
WHAT RUSSELL DID, INSTEAD OF
DOING A BOOK BURGER, HE DID
LET'S CALL IT A VIDEO BURGER
BECAUSE HIS STORY CAME FROM
THE VIDEO ON THE
ROLLER COASTER.
THIS IS REALLY CUTE.
HE WROTE IT IN ROLE, AS IF
HE WAS, IT SOUNDS LIKE
A HILLBILLY.
I THINK I'M RIGHT ON THAT ONE.
AND THE TITLE OF HIS BURGER
IS CALLED THE DARNED TOOTINGS
RIDE THAT EVER WAS.
AND THROUGHOUT HIS BURGER, HE
TALKS ABOUT THE CHARACTERS
AND THE SETTING AND SO ON.
IT'S REALLY CRAZY.
AND JOE IS FROM THE COUNTRY
AND HE LIVES IN THE BOONS,
AND HIS NAME IS JOE, AND
HE'S THE MAIN CHARACTER.
AND HE WRITES ALL
ABOUT THE RIDE.
AND EVEN IN HIS
RECOMMENDATION, HE WRITES AT
THE END, I GIVE THIS A TEN
BECAUSE I WAS PRETTY GOSH DARN
CLOSE TO THE HEART, IF
YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.
I RECKON THIS HERE BOOK TO
YOU, IF YOU WAS A COUNTRY TIME
BOY LIKE MYSELF.
AND HE SIGNED IT, BILLY BOB.
SO I THINK YOU HAD A LOT OF
FUN WITH THAT, RUSSELL, AND I
THINK A LOT OF THE OTHER
KIDS IN YOUR CLASS DID.
HERE'S ANOTHER NEAT ONE.
HERE IS A VERY NICE ONE ALSO
FROM THE PINES SENIOR PUBLIC.
THIS IS FROM MANDY.

Now she shows a fake burger that came in with a script she reads.

She continues
MANDY ACTUALLY CONSTRUCTED A
3-D BURGER AS I HAD SUGGESTED.
AND THEN SHE INCLUDED ALL THE
THINGS IN WRITING ALONG WITH IT.
HERE IN WRITING IS ALL THE
THINGS THAT WENT WITH IT FOR
THE SETTING, PLOT
AND CHARACTERS.
THAT WAS WELL DONE.
SO PINES, CONGRATULATIONS,
YOU DID A GREAT JOB,
AND WE'VE ENJOYED
ALL OF THEM.
OKAY, WE HAVE A
CALL FROM USBORNE.
GOOD MORNING.

The Caller says HELLO.

She says HI, DID YOU HAVE A
COMMENT OR A QUESTION?

The Caller says YEAH.
THE BEST ACTIVITY THAT WORKED
FOR ME WAS THE BOOK BURGER.

She says OH, YOU ENJOYED THE
BOOK BURGER, TOO.
OH, GOOD.
WHY DID IT WORK FOR YOU?
MAYBE YOU COULD SHARE THAT?

The Caller says
IT WAS A WHOLE LOT EASIER
THAN MOST BOOK STUDIES
THAT YOU DO.

She says AHA.
SO IT WAS FUN TO MAKE?

The Caller says YEAH.

She says DID YOU DO ONE THAT WAS ONE
DIMENSION OR THREE DIMENSION?

The Caller says THREE DIMENSION.

She says OH, GOOD.
WHAT DID YOU
MAKE IT OUT OF?

The Caller says STYROFOAM.
IT WAS A SUB BUN.

She says OH, GOOD.
IT WAS A SUB.
THAT'S GREAT.
THANKS FOR CALLING THAT IN.
AND I'M REALLY HAPPY AT
USBORNE THAT ACTIVITY WORKED
FOR YOU.
THAT'S GREAT.
OKAY, NOW, WE'RE GOING TO MOVE
ON QUICKLY AND TALK A LITTLE
BIT ABOUT SOME OF THE
OTHER THINGS THAT WE DID.
AFTER THE READING FOLLOW-UPS,
WE TALKED ABOUT WRITING TIPS.
AND I THINK THE KEY THING WE
REALLY WANTED TO PICK UP IN
LANGUAGE ALIVE WAS NOT BEING
HAPPY WITH JUST THE FIRST
THING THAT YOU WRITE, BUT
TO TRY TO KEEP BUILDING ON
AND ADDING ON.
AND THAT WAS THE TIP.

A new handwritten blue paper sheet appears on screen. It reads "The street was crowded with cars!" And is signed Partner.

She says
SO WE TALKED ABOUT ADJECTIVES
AND ADVERBS AND SO ON.
AND THE WAY TO GET IT
GOING WAS REALLY TO USE
THE CONCEPT BUILDER.
SO WE STARTED SLOW, REMEMBER
WE STARTED WITH SOMETHING AT
THE TOP, AND WHAT DOES THE
LEFT MAKE YOU FEEL, THE RIGHT,
AND THEN TOGETHER, HOW
DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL?

She now covers the paper sheet with a new one that has a graphic in the center that connects four blank boxes. Next, a new paper sheet has six blank boxes. Then, a new one, increases the number to a total of ten. The annotations in it read "What, benefits, why, career, where, hazards, solutions."

She continues
BUT WE KEPT BUILDING, AND
HOPEFULLY YOU'LL BE ABLE TO
USE THIS IDEA NEXT YEAR.
MAYBE IN WRITING A SPEECH OR
DOING A PRESENTATION, AND
MAYBE DOING A PROJECT, AS WE
ADDED ON THE BOXES AND KEPT
BUILDING AND BUILDING AND
BUILDING OUR WORDS AND OUR
LANGUAGE TO BUILD IT THROUGH.
SO THAT SEEMS LIKE A
VERY SUCCESSFUL ONE.

A new paper sheet with the title Spelling appears on screen. It reads "word play, tricky words, generalizations, problem words."

She says
COLLEGE AVENUE,
GOOD MORNING.

Victoria says HI.

She says HI.
WHO AM I SPEAKING TO?

Victoria says VICTORIA.

She says HI, VICTORIA.
DID YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT
SOMETHING THAT WORKED FOR YOU
IN THE CLASSROOM?

Victoria says WELL, THE PHONE JUST
RANG, SO WE WEREN'T SURE.

She says OH, OKAY.
DID YOU DO A BOOK BURGER?

Victoria says NO.
WE WEREN'T THERE FOR THAT.
WE'VE ONLY SEEN
THE OCTOPUS ONE.

She says OH, THAT'S TOO BAD.
WELL, NOW YOU'VE SEEN THE BOOK
BURGER, MAYBE YOU COULD DO IT
IN SEPTEMBER.
WOULD BE A GREAT IDEA IF THE
TEACHER ASSIGNED YOU TO DO A
BOOK REPORT, NOW YOU'VE GOT
AN IDEA UP YOUR SLEEVE
THAT WORKS.
OKAY, THANKS FOR CALLING IN.
BYE.
THEN WE MOVED ON TO SPELLING.
AND THE KEY ON LANGUAGE
ALIVE WAS FOR YOU TO TAKE
RESPONSIBILITY
FOR YOUR SPELLING.
WE TALKED ABOUT SOME OF THE
WAYS WE COULD DO THAT THROUGH
WORD PLAY, TRICKY WORD, MAKING
GENERALIZATIONS, AND SO ON.
AND IN ORDER TO GET YOUR IDEA
ACROSS, WE TALKED ABOUT IF
YOU SPELL THINGS CORRECTLY,
YOU WOULD HAVE A BETTER
CHANCE OF REALLY
MAKING AN IMPACT.
OF COURSE WITH YOUR WRITING,
YOU HAVE AN AUDIENCE
AND A PURPOSE, YOU WANT
TO MAKE AN IMPACT.

A new sheet has a circle in the center divided in 4 pieces. Each one has a number and they read "1. See, 2. Feel, 3. Think and 4. Do."

She continues
NOW, A LOT OF KIDS SENT SOME
FABULOUS THINGS IN, WHICH WAS
GREAT, AND I BROUGHT SOMETHING
TO SHOW YOU THAT ONE OF MY
STUDENTS DID BECAUSE IT SEEMED
TO BE A FOLLOW-UP TO WHAT
WE DID ON THE RESPONSE
WHEEL AND WITH POACHERS.
NOW, THIS IS ROBIN IN
MY GRADE SEVEN CLASS.
AND WE'RE ACTUALLY RIGHT NOW
DOING A PROJECT ON, WE'RE
CALLING IT BIOGRAPHY DAY,
AND THAT'S ON MONDAY.
AND ROBIN READ DIAN FOSSEY.

She shows a small picture of Dian Fossey on the cover of a jungle themed box.

She says
AND THE REASON I BROUGHT
THIS IN IS DIAN FOSSEY WAS
CERTAINLY A WELL KNOWN PERSON
WHO WANTED TO GET RID OF
SOME OF THESE POACHERS.
SO SHE'S CREATED A WHOLE BOX.
IT LOOKS LIKE THE RAINFOREST,
YOU CAN SEE IN THE TREE
CONSTRUCTION, AND SHE'S GOT
TREES AND THINGS ON THE SIDE,
BUT IT'S REALLY NEAT BECAUSE
INSIDE, EVERYTHING TO DO WITH
DIAN FOSSEY, THIS IS
LIKE HER TREASURE BOX.
OKAY?
SO SHE'S GOT ALL THE ROPES
AND THINGS THAT SHE HAS TAKEN
FROM PEOPLE THAT WERE
POACHING THE ORANGUTANS.
SHE'S GOT THE PET,
HER PET MONKEY, KIMA.
SHE HAS HER DOG THAT WAS TAKEN
AWAY BY POACHERS, AND SHE
THREATENED TO KILL THE NATIVE
COWS IF CINDY HER DOG
WASN'T RETURNED.
SHE HAS ALL THE DIFFERENT
JOURNALS THAT DIAN FOSSEY...
JUST MAKE BELIEVE ONES, OF
COURSE -- THAT DIAN FOSSEY
WOULD HAVE KEPT ON HER THREE
FAVOURITE GORILLA GROUPS.
HERE'S ALL THE
NOTES AND THINGS.

She opens the box and finds inside a series of objects like puppets, small notebooks, notes and pictures.

She continues
SHE'S GOT HER GRADUATION HAT.
AND WITH EACH LITTLE PIECE
SHE HAS IN THE TREASURE BOX,
SHE'S WRITTEN THINGS THAT
RELATE TO DIAN FOSSEY.
THIS IS WHERE SHE GRADUATED
FROM COLLEGE AND WHAT SHE DID.
HERE WE HAVE A WONDERFUL
LITTLE, A HEART.
THIS WAS HER BOYFRIEND,
BOB CAMPBELL.
THIS WAS THE BOOK THAT WAS
WRITTEN, GORILLAS IN THE MIST,
WHICH I'M SURE YOU
KNOW ABOUT.
AND BECAUSE THERE WAS A MOVIE
MADE ABOUT IT, ROBIN ACTUALLY
CONSTRUCTED A VIDEO COVER THAT
SIGOURNEY WEAVER WAS IN WITH
PLAYING THE PART IN
GORILLAS IN THE MIST.
MAYBE YOU'VE SEEN THAT.
SO THIS IS LIKE A FILLED BOX,
IT'S LIKE A TREASURE BOX.
AND WHAT WE ARE DOING IN MY
CLASS THIS WEEK, WE'RE HAVING
ON BIOGRAPHY DAY, YOU HAVE TO
COME DRESSED AS THE PERSON.
SO ROBIN WILL HAVE TO BE
DIAN FOSSEY ON MONDAY
AS SHE OPENS UP
THE TREASURE BOX.
I THOUGHT I'D SHARE THAT WITH
YOU AS THAT'S ANOTHER IDEA
ABOUT THE POACHING.
OKAY, GOOD MORNING,
KING GEORGE.

Kate says HI.

She says HI.
WHO AM I SPEAKING TO?

Kate says KATE BURGESS.

She says OKAY.
WHAT WORKED IN YOUR CLASS?

Kate says I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT
BOX, THAT DIAN FOSSEY THING,
I THINK IT'S A
REALLY COOL IDEA.

She says THANK YOU.
I'LL TELL ROBIN THAT.
MAYBE YOU COULD MAKE
ONE ABOUT ANY BOOK.
HERE'S ANOTHER IDEA, NOW THAT
WE'VE GOT A BOOK BOX OUT,
HERE'S ANOTHER COOL IDEA.
FOR LOTS OF GIRLS, OR GUYS,
YOU CAN MAKE WHATEVER YOU WANT
TO MAKE, TOO.

She shows a new object. It’s a house-shaped box that contains books, pens and notes inside.

She continues
BUT A LOT OF GIRLS OVER
THE SUMMER LIKE TO READ
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES.
SO CATHY IN MY CLASS, SHE'S
GOING TO BE ANNE ON MONDAY
ON BIOGRAPHY DAY.
AND SHE HAS ACTUALLY
RECONSTRUCTED THE HOUSE OF
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES,
AND THAT'S HER BOX.
AND SHE HAS THINGS INSIDE

- SHE'S ACTUALLY GOT THE
CLASSROOM WHERE SHE
DID HER WORK AND SO ON.
THE BOOK IS INCLUDED ALSO.
THE ANNE OF GREEN
GABLES BOOK IS INSIDE.
AND ALL THE THINGS
INSIDE RELATE TO ANNE.
FOR EXAMPLE, SHE'S GOT A
FLAG IN HERE, AND IT'S GOT
A PEEKABOO BACK ON IT.
SHE LIVED IN PEI, LOVED EVERY
SINGLE MINUTE WHEN SHE WAS
OUT WITH BEAUTIFUL SCENERY.
BECAUSE SHE LIKED TO TAKE
NOTES, SHE'S RECONSTRUCTED
A LITTLE NOTE PAD.
AND ON THE BACK SHE WRITES,
SHE LOVED TO WRITE.
AT AGE NINE, SHE HAD BEEN
KEEPING A DAILY DIARY.
AND THERE'S ALL KINDS
OF THINGS IN HERE.
THERE'S EVERYTHING IN HERE
RELATES TO THE LIFE OF ANNE.
HER LITTLE PICTURE OF HER CAT
WITH INFORMATION ON THE BACK
AND SO ON.
SO THAT IS A COOL IDEA.
AND MAYBE NEXT YEAR, WHEN YOU
HAVE TO DO A BOOK REPORT,
HERE'S ANOTHER BOOK REPORT
IDEA THAT THE KIDS JUST LOVE
TO DO.
IT'S REALLY, REALLY FUN,
AND IT'S A GOOD SUMMERTIME
ACTIVITY, TOO.
ON A RAINY DAY LIKE TODAY,
WOULDN'T IT BE FUN TO MAKE A
BOOK BOX, AND PUT ALL
THE THINGS THAT RELATE
TO THE BOOK INSIDE?
SO THAT'S GREAT.
HI, COLLEGE AVENUE,
GOOD MORNING.

Elizabeth says HELLO.

She says HI.
WHO AM I SPEAKING TO?

Elizabeth says ELIZABETH.

She says HI, ELIZABETH.
DID YOU HAVE A
COMMENT OR A QUESTION?

Elizabeth says I THINK THE BOXES
ARE REALLY NICE.

She says GOOD, GOOD.
MAYBE THAT'S SOMETHING YOU
CAN DO OVER THE SUMMER.

Elizabeth says AND YOU CAN USE
THEM FOR BABYSITTING.

She says OH, THAT'S A GREAT IDEA.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING THAT.
WHAT A GREAT IDEA.
TO TAKE -- ACTUALLY, WHAT YOU
COULD ACTUALLY MAKE IS A BOX
ABOUT A LITTLE STORY.
YOU COULD TAKE A STORY WHEN
YOU'RE BABYSITTING, AND YOU
COULD MAKE ALL THE STUFF AND
TELL THE STORY, AND IT CAN
ACTUALLY BE A STORY BOX.
AND THAT'S ANOTHER
THING WE USE BOXES FOR IS
MAKING A STORY BOX.
WHAT A GOOD IDEA IF YOU'RE
A CAMP COUNSELLOR OR YOU'RE
WORKING WITH KIDS OVER THE
SUMMER, OR VOLUNTEERING OR
BABYSITTING, TO HAVE A
CHARACTER BOX OR STORY BOX
THAT YOU COULD USE.
GREAT IDEA.
OKAY, LET'S MOVE ON NOW
BECAUSE THE NEXT LESSON THAT
WE DID, REMEMBER THIS,
RESHAPING IDEAS.
AND WE LEARNED ALL ABOUT DRAFT
COPIES, AND HOW TO RESHAPE
OUR IDEAS.
AND THE VIRTUAL CHALLENGE THAT
I LEFT YOU WITH, REMEMBER,
WAS THE EDITING KIT.
AND HOPEFULLY MANY OF YOU HAVE
MADE THE EDITING KIT BECAUSE
IT'S FUN TO MAKE, AND IT
CERTAINLY IS FUN TO DO.

The screen shows yet a new paper sheet. The page has a sentence that reads "The octopus swims in the sea and can squeeze through holes because of its body and it can hide in coral." The original text is edited and corrected using a red pen.

She explains
AND REMEMBER, WHEN YOU PULL
THAT EDITING KIT OUT, THE KEY
PART OF THAT LESSON WAS THAT
IT REALLY MEANT BUSINESS.
AND ALL THE THINGS YOU NEEDED
INSIDE TO DO THE JOB OF
EDITING, INCLUDING ALL THE
TOOLS, MATERIALS, THESAURUS,
ALL OF YOUR WORK ON SPELLING
GENERALIZATION, THE LIST OF
PROBLEM WORDS, YOUR EDITING
SYMBOLS, REMEMBER EVERYTHING
WAS THERE.
THAT WAS A GREAT LESSON.
AND IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS
LATER YOU WANT TO CALL IN
ABOUT, THINGS THAT WORKED FOR
YOU IN THE EDITING LESSON,
I'D REALLY LIKE TO
HEAR THOSE, TOO.

She shows a red folder labelled under "Editing" that contains a series of paper sheets and books used to edit.

She says
NOW, WE'RE GOING TO GO ON TO
REMEMBER THE LAST SHOW WE SAW
LAST WEEK, AND THAT
WAS SO FUN FOR ME BECAUSE
IT WAS MY KIDS.
NOW, FOR SOME OF YOU, IF YOU
MISSED THE LESSON, I'M JUST
GOING TO SHOW YOU A LITTLE
SNIPPET OF ONE OF THE SPEAKERS.
REMEMBER JOSEPH?
HE WAS THE LAST SPEAKER.
HE WAS IN GRADE SEVEN, AND
JOSEPH WAS ON HIS WAY TO A
PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST THAT
I WAS RUNNING AT MY SCHOOL
ON WEDNESDAY.
LET'S JUST WATCH JOSEPH.
THEN I HAVE A SPECIAL
SURPRISE FOR YOU.

A video plays. In it, a kid of a about 8 years old appears on screen. He has short curly dark hair and wears a blue T-shirt.

Joseph says THE TOPIC I HAVE CHOSEN
TO DO MY SPEECH ON IS SPECIAL
FOR A REASON.
NOBODY IN THIS ROOM COULD DO
THE SAME TOPIC AS WELL AS ME.
I AM VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE,
AND I'VE HAD 13 YEARS OF
FIRSTHAND EXPERIENCE.
AS A MATTER OF FACT, YOU
CAN EVEN SAY I'M AN EXPERT.
YOU'RE PROBABLY WONDERING
WHAT IT COULD BE?
SO I WON'T LEAVE YOU
HANGING ANY LONGER.
SO HERE IT GOES.
BEING DEAF.
IF YOU LOOK UP THE WORD DEAF
IN THE DICTIONARY, YOU WILL
FIND THIS DEFINITION.
BEING DEAF MEANS PARTLY OR
COMPLETELY UNABLE TO HEAR.
IN MY OWN WORDS, BEING DEAF
MEANS NOT BEING ABLE TO HEAR.
I CAN TELL YOU IT IS VERY
IMPORTANT TO COMMUNICATE WITH
PEOPLE EVERYWHERE, NO
MATTER WHO THEY ARE.
BEING DEAF IS NO DIFFERENT.

The clip ends and she appears back in the studio sitting next to Joseph.

She says WELL, HERE WE HAVE IT,
I'VE BROUGHT MY GUEST.
AND I'VE BROUGHT JOSEPH
BECAUSE JOSEPH IS GOING TO
TELL YOU ABOUT, WE
HAD SUCH A BUSY WEEK.
WHAT WAS SPECIAL ABOUT THIS
WEEK, JOSEPH, AT SCHOOL FOR YOU?

Joseph says
WELL, THE SPECIAL WEEK I HAD
WAS I WON THE PUBLIC SPEAKING
CONTEST, WHERE TWO PEOPLE IN
EACH CLASS DID PUBLIC SPEAKING.
AND WE DID IT IN
THE AUDITORIUM.
SO I WON.
THAT WAS SPECIAL FOR ME.

She says THAT'S GREAT.
WE'RE GOING TO TAKE
SOME CALLS FOR JOSEPH.
IF YOU'D LIKE TO CALL IN AND
ASK JOSEPH ANYTHING ABOUT THE
PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST, OR
ANYTHING ABOUT HIS PREPARATION
OF HIS SPEECH, OR ANY QUESTION
YOU MIGHT HAVE FOR JOSEPH,
I'M SURE HE'D BE VERY
HAPPY TO ANSWER THEM.
NOW, JUST WHILE I'M WAITING
FOR SOME CALLS TO COME IN,
JOSEPH, LET'S TALK A LITTLE
BIT ABOUT HOW WE ORGANIZED THAT
PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST AT OUR
SCHOOL BECAUSE MAYBE SOME OF
THE KIDS, LAST WEEK WHEN THEY
CALLED IN AFTER WATCHING ALL
THE KIDS, THEY THOUGHT SOME
OF THEIR SPEECHES HAD BEEN
KIND OF CRUMMY.
NOW BECAUSE YOUR SPEECH TURNED
OUT SO WELL BECAUSE THERE WAS
GOING TO BE A CONTEST, DID
THAT MAKE YOU WANT TO DO A
BETTER JOB IN WRITING THE
SPEECH AND EVERYTHING?

Joseph says YEAH.

She continues OKAY.
DO YOU THINK IT WAS A GOOD
IDEA TO HAVE A CONTEST?

Joseph says WELL, IT WOULD PROBABLY BE A
GOOD IDEA BECAUSE IF THERE IS
A CONTEST, A LOT OF PEOPLE
WON'T WANT TO DO IT,
THEY WANT TO TRY AND WIN.

She says RIGHT.

Joseph continues
PROBABLY IT'S A GOOD IDEA
BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL
DO IT.

She says RIGHT.
THAT'S RIGHT.
AT OUR SCHOOL, WE HAVE SEVEN
GRADE SEVENS, AND ALL THE
GRADE SEVENS HAD TO DO A
SPEECH, AS THEY DO ALMOST
EVERYWHERE IN ONTARIO, BUT TWO
KIDS WOULD BE SELECTED FROM
EACH CLASS.
AND THEY WENT TO
THE AUDITORIUM.
SO WE HAD, HOW
MANY DO YOU THINK?
HOW MANY WOULD WE HAVE HAD
IN THE AUDITORIUM THAT DAY?

Joseph says MAYBE 230 PEOPLE.

She says
WOW, THAT'S A LOT, ISN'T IT?
OKAY, I THINK WE HAVE
A CALLER CALLING IN.
HI, GOOD MORNING.

Amanda says HELLO.

She says HI, THIS IS ELGIN AVENUE.

Amanda says HI.

She says WHO AM I SPEAKING TO?

Amanda says AMANDA.

She says HI, AMANDA.
DID YOU HAVE A
QUESTION FOR JOSEPH?

Amanda says YES.

She says GREAT, OKAY.

Amanda says I WAS JUST WONDERING
IF HE EVER GETS NERVOUS?

She says SURE, OKAY.
JOSEPH, DO YOU
EVER GET NERVOUS?

Joseph says YEAH.

She says WERE YOU NERVOUS ON THE
DAY WE DID THE SPEECH?

Joseph says YEAH, VERY NERVOUS.

She says AND HOW DID YOU FEEL
WHEN IT WAS ALL OVER?

Joseph says RELIEF.

She says BUT WAS EVERYBODY
ELSE NERVOUS, TOO?

Joseph says YEAH, I THINK SO.

She says EVERYBODY.
I REMEMBER WHEN WE WERE
REHEARSING IT ON STAGE THE DAY
BEFORE, ONE OF THE GIRLS SAID,
WHEN THEY WERE ALL SITTING IN
THEIR 14 CHAIRS, SHE
SAID, IS THERE EVERYONE HERE
THAT'S NERVOUS?
AND EVERYONE PUT
UP THEIR HAND.
SO THAT'S A VERY NORMAL
RESPONSE TO BE NERVOUS.
BUT ANYWAY, YOU ALL OVERCAME
IT, AND YOU WERE VERY
CONFIDENT WHEN
YOU WERE UP THERE.
WE DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE
NERVOUS, OR ANYBODY ELSE.
HI, KING GEORGE?

The Caller says HI.

She says DID YOU HAVE A
QUESTION OR COMMENT?

The Caller says I HAD A QUESTION.

She says SURE.

The Caller says WERE YOU REALLY EXCITED WHEN
THEY TOLD YOU THAT YOU WON?

She says HOW DID YOU FEEL
WHEN YOU WON?
WERE YOU REALLY EXCITED?

Joseph says YEAH, I WAS REALLY EXCITED.

She says TELL EVERYBODY WHAT ALL THE
KIDS DID FROM YOUR CLASS?
THE ENGLISH CLASS YOU
COME FROM, WHAT THEY DID
ON THAT DAY?
WHEN YOU WON -- WE HAD A BIG
DRUM ROLL AND EVERYTHING AND
JOSEPH WON.
AND WHAT HAPPENED?

Joseph says WELL, WHAT HAPPENED WAS A
LOT OF PEOPLE DID DIFFERENT
TOPICS, AND WHEN THEY NAMED
ME, LOTS OF PEOPLE GETTING
REALLY EXCITED.

She says THEN THEY ALL STOOD
UP, DIDN'T THEY?
JOSEPH ACTUALLY HAD
A STANDING OVATION.
THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS
AT OUR SCHOOL.
WHEN SOMEBODY WINS FROM A
CLASS, THEN EVERYBODY IN THAT
CLASS, IT'S QUITE
A GOOD THING FOR TEAM SPIRIT,
AND IT'S NICE TO HAVE
AN ACADEMIC ASSEMBLY.
IT'S NICE BRINGING YOUR KIDS
TOGETHER, AND BRINGING THE
STUDENTS TOGETHER FOR
SOMETHING THAT'S NOT A SPORTS'
AWARD, THAT KIND OF A
THING, AN ARTS' AWARD.
THIS IS AN ACADEMIC AWARD.
AND CERTAINLY NOW WITH ORAL
VISUAL COMMUNICATION BEING
SUCH A BIG PART OF OUR
LANGUAGE ON OUR REPORT CARDS,
IT'S GOOD TO HAVE A FOCUS AND
SOMETHING TO BUILD TOWARDS.
SO THAT WAS GREAT.
OKAY, USBORNE, GOOD MORNING.

Julie says HELLO.

She says HI.
WHO AM I SPEAKING TO?

Julie says JULIE.

She says HI, JULIE.
DID YOU HAVE A
QUESTION OR COMMENT?

Julie says A QUESTION.

She says SURE.

Julie says IS IT NICE WHEN YOU GET IN
TROUBLE BY YOUR MUM AND YOU
DON'T HAVE TO LISTEN TO HER?

She says OH, OKAY.
IT IS NICE -- REMEMBER LAST
WEEK ALL THE KIDS REMEMBER
YOUR SPEECH BECAUSE THEY WERE
SO INTERESTED IN WHAT THE
ADVANTAGES TO BEING
DEAF WOULD BE.
SHE WANTED TO KNOW IS IT
GOOD WHEN YOU DON'T GET IN
TROUBLE, WHEN YOU CAN
TURN OFF YOUR MOTHER?
IS THAT GOOD?

Joseph says YES.
IF I TURNED IT OFF, MUM WOULD
PROBABLY GET EVEN MADDER.

She says YEAH.
DOES SHE KNOW WHEN
YOU TURN IT OFF?

Joseph says SOMETIMES.

She says DO YOU EVER TURN ME OFF?

Joseph says YEAH.

She says OH, MY GOODNESS.
HE TURNS HIS TEACHER OFF.
THAT'S GOOD.
THAT'S A REAL
ADVANTAGE, RIGHT?
OKAY, ELGIN AVENUE,
GOOD MORNING.

Angela says MORNING.

She says HI.
WHO AM I SPEAKING TO?

Angela says ANGELA.

She says HI, ANGELA.
DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION
OR COMMENT FOR JOSEPH?

Angela says I HAVE A COMMENT.

She says SURE.

Angela says I LIKED HIS SPEECH.
AND I REALLY ENJOYED IT.

She says GOOD, GOOD.
SHE LOVED YOUR SPEECH,
AND SHE REALLY ENJOYED IT.
WHAT DID YOU LIKE
BEST ABOUT IT?
BECAUSE WE LEARNED
SO MUCH FROM ALL THE KIDS
WITH THEIR SPEAKING.
WHAT DID YOU LEARN?

Joseph says
THE ADVANTAGES THAT HE HAS.

She says OKAY, GOOD, GOOD.
ISN'T IT NICE WHEN PEOPLE
CAN TURN THINGS AROUND?
IT'S LIKE LOOKING AT THE
GLASS HALF FULL INSTEAD OF
HALF EMPTY.
JOSEPH WAS ABLE TO TURN IT
AROUND AND SAY THESE ARE THE
REALLY GOOD THINGS.
THAT WAS GREAT.
GOOD, OKAY.
WE'VE HAD A LOT OF KIDS
THAT ARE COMMENTING.
WE'RE GOING TO MOVE ON TO THE
NEXT -- OKAY, I'LL TAKE ONE
MORE CALL TO TALK TO JOSEPH.
THEN I'M GOING TO GET ON TO
ALL THE SUMMERTIME ACTIVITIES.
THEN THE LAST PART OF THE
SHOW, WE'LL HAVE 15 MINUTES
WHERE YOU CAN CALL IN ANY
QUESTIONS OR ANY COMMENTS,
IF YOU WANT TO ASK JOSEPH
SOMETHING, WE CAN GO BACK
TO THAT.
MAYBE YOU WANT TO TALK
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS
WONDERFUL TROPHY THAT HE WON.
YOU WERE SO LUCKY.
HE GOT THE BIGGEST ONE.
HI, COLLEGE AVENUE.

The Caller says HELLO.

She says HI.
DID YOU HAVE A
COMMENT OR QUESTION?

The Caller says WELL, ACTUALLY, I CALLED
EARLIER ABOUT THE EDITING KIT.

She says OKAY.
I'D LIKE TO HEAR ABOUT IT.
DID YOU MAKE AN EDITING KIT?

The Caller says NO, I DIDN'T.
BUT I WAS JUST WONDERING,
WHAT KIND OF STUFF
DO YOU ACTUALLY PUT IN IT?
IS IT JUST SPELLING WORDS?

She says OKAY.
WHY DON'T I PULL THE KIT OUT
BECAUSE THAT'S A VERY GOOD
QUESTION, AND I'LL
SHOW YOU THAT AGAIN.
BECAUSE I'M HOPING EVERYONE,
IF THEY HAVEN'T MADE THEIR
EDITING KIT YET, WILL
CERTAINLY MAKE ONE OVER
THE SUMMER.
NOW REMEMBER, THESE ARE
THE THINGS THAT ARE IN IT.
YOU CAN MAKE IT YOURSELF.
THIS IS MADE OUT
OF BRISTOL BOARD.

She shows the Editing kit from the red folder yet again.

She explains
THINGS THAT ARE IN IT ARE,
FIRST OF ALL ON THE LEFT WE
HAVE THE MATERIALS
YOU NEED TO EDIT.
AND ONE OF THE KEY THINGS
YOU CAN BE LOOKING FOR THIS
SUMMER IS THIS
DRAFT STAMP, OKAY?
AND THAT'S THE STAMP YOU WANT
TO PUSH TO SHOW THAT IT'S
JUST A DRAFT.
SOME OF THE OTHER THINGS
WERE WITE-OUT AND POST-ITS.
AND POST-ITS WERE KEY BECAUSE
THE POST-ITS WE WANTED TO BE
ABLE TO, IF YOU COULDN'T JUST
INSERT A WORD, YOU MIGHT WANT
TO INSERT A SENTENCE, YOU
COULD POST IT OVER THE SPOT.
SO THAT WAS KEY.
THE OTHER THING THAT WAS
REALLY IMPORTANT WAS THIS
DRY ERASE MARKER.
AND THE DRY ERASE MARKER
BECAUSE WHEN YOU ARE ON THE
ACETATE, AND YOU WANT TO
WRITE ON IT, AND YOU WANT TO
COMMENT ON PERHAPS THEY
NEEDED A CAPITAL THERE, THAT
YOU CAN ERASE IT AFTER.
OKAY?
SO THAT WAS IMPORTANT.
AND YOU CAN BUY THESE AT ANY
OF THE BUSINESS STORES
AND SO ON.
SO BE LOOKING FOR THAT.
NOW, AS FAR AS THE WORD THINGS
THAT ARE IN IT, WE TRIED TO
PUT IN ALL THE THINGS THAT
WE HAD DONE, SUCH AS EDITING
SYMBOLS SHOULD BE THERE
TO HELP YOU AND YOUR
EDITING PARTNER.
SOME OF THE SPELLING
GENERALIZATIONS THAT WE WERE
IMPORTANT, EXAMPLES OF THOSE,
ALSO THE PROBLEM WORDS
THAT YOU HAVE.
AND PERHAPS ANOTHER THING
TO PUT IN HERE MIGHT BE FOR
VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT MIGHT
BE THE CONCEPT BUILDERS THAT
WE PLAYED WITH ON THE
SERIES IN BUILDING IDEAS.
SO THOSE WERE SOME
OF THE THINGS.
I'M GLAD YOU CALLED
IN THAT QUESTION.
BECAUSE I'M HOPING THAT WHEN
YOU GET BACK TO SCHOOL IN
SEPTEMBER, WHEN YOU MOVE ON,
IF YOU'RE IN GRADE SEVEN, AND
YOU MOVE ON TO GRADE EIGHT OR
WHATEVER, THAT YOU HAVE THIS
EDITING KIT.
BECAUSE IT'S SO FUN WHEN
YOU'VE GOT THE RIGHT TOOLS TO
DO A REALLY GOOD JOB.
OKAY, NOW WE'RE GOING TO MOVE
ON TO THE SUMMER ACTIVITIES.
I'LL JUST HAND YOU THIS
EDITING KIT OVER HERE, JOSEPH.
AS WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT
THROUGH THE WHOLE SERIES,
WE'VE TALKED ABOUT HAVING
REASONS FOR DOING THINGS.
THAT'S WHY ALL THE THINGS ON
THE POACHER AND SO ON WERE SO
TERRIFIC BECAUSE YOU WANTED
TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT GETTING
RID OF ME AS
THAT BAD POACHER.
NOW, ALL OF THE THINGS I'M
GIVING YOU TO DO FOR THE
SUMMER, IF YOU HAVE A REASON
FOR DOING IT, LET'S THINK
ABOUT ONE.

A new paper sheet reads "Organize a class reunion."

She continues
AND I THOUGHT PERHAPS, IF
YOU DO ANY OR ALL OF THESE
ACTIVITIES, AND YOU DO A
REALLY GOOD JOB OVER THE
SUMMER, YOU WANT SOME
PLACE TO BRING THEM BACK.
SO I THOUGHT AN IDEA MIGHT
BE FOR YOU TO HAVE A CLASS
REUNION WITH ALL THE KIDS IN
YOUR CLASS, AND ON THE FIRST
WEEK BACK, YOU KIND OF GET
TOGETHER AND YOU BRING THE
STUFF THAT YOU MADE FROM THE
VIRTUAL CLASSROOM TO SHARE
WITH EVERYONE.
BECAUSE YOU ARE GOING TO ENJOY
TO DO ONE OR PROBABLY ALL OF
THESE ACTIVITIES,
THEY ARE SO NEAT.
NOW, I HAVE A WHOLE SERIES
OF THEM TO SHOW YOU.
I WANT YOU TO QUICKLY
WRITE STUFF DOWN.
ANY IDEA, THINGS THAT JOG THAT
YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN.
I HOPE YOU ALREADY HAVE THAT
BOOK BOX, THE CHARACTER BOXES
DOWN BECAUSE THAT WAS A REALLY
GOOD ONE TO GET STARTED.
NOW, THINGS THAT YOU
CAN DO OVER THE SUMMER.
FIRST OF ALL, I THINK THE
FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO IS
MAKE YOURSELF A BOX OF '98, A
SUMMER BOX, AND DECORATE IT.
DECORATE IT SO IT LOOKS
LIKE SUMMER, OKAY?

A small box appears on screen. The cover on top has colourful feathers and confetti mixed with small pieces of wood.

She continues
WE'VE GOT LOTS OF FEATHERS,
AND THINGS YOU CAN COLLECT OFF
THE GROUND AND SO ON.
WE'VE GOT BARK.
JUST MAKE IT LOOK
FUN AND ALIVE.
AND THEN YOU'VE GOT A
PLACE TO PUT THINGS.
NOW, LET'S LOOK AT ALL THE
THINGS YOU CAN PUT IN YOUR
SUMMER OF '98 BOX.
NOW, THE FIRST THING IS, I'LL
SHOW YOU AN EXAMPLE OF ONE OF
MY ABSOLUTELY FAVOURITE BOOKS.
AND IT'S CALLED THE
LITTLE VAMPIRE'S DIARY.
LET'S JUST TAKE
A LOOK AT THAT.

She shows a small book with the title "The little vampire’s diary." The book cover is mainly yellow with a pattern based on bats and the drawing of a little kid and a small dragon wearing eye masks. She opens up the book and goes through the interior.

She continues
AND ON HERE, THIS IS A DIARY
THE LITTLE VAMPIRE HAS WRITTEN.
AND HERE IS HER
LITTLE PET BAT FANG.
IT'S CALLED A 3-D DIARY.
THE REASON I'M SHOWING IT TO
YOU IS IF YOU TAKE THIS AS A
SPRING BOARD, AS AN IDEA,
YOU FOR SURE WILL WANT TO
RECREATE YOUR OWN SUMMER
DIARY NOT UNLIKE THIS.
SO LET'S LOOK AT A 3D,
WHAT IT COULD LOOK LIKE.
EVEN OPENING THIS ONE'S FUN.
BECAUSE IT HAS A VELCRO
OPENING, WHICH IS NEAT, OKAY?
NOW, INSIDE BECAUSE IT
IS SPECIAL, IT HAS ALL
SORTS OF POCKETS.
NOW, YOU CAN MAKE POCKETS.
AND THIS ONE ACTUALLY HAS SOME
CRAZY GLASSES IN IT THAT YOU
CAN LOOK, LITTLE VAMPIRE
CLASSES TO GO THROUGH THE
DIARY, BUT YOU CAN SEE THAT
THE POCKETS, YOU CAN MAKE
THESE BY PUTTING A PIECE OF
BRISTOL BOARD AND TAPING THEM
ON, AND POCKETS ARE A NEAT
WAY TO STORE THINGS IN YOUR
SUMMER DIARY.
NOW, MAKING PAGES FUN AND
ALIVE -- I WON'T HAVE TIME TO
READ YOU ALL THIS, BUT I'M
JUST GOING TO SHOW YOU THE
THINGS THAT MAKE IT 3D,
AND THIS CAN BE FOR YOU
AND YOUR SUMMER.
SO YOU MIGHT
START OFF JULY 1.
NOW, HAVING FOLD
DOWN PAGES ARE NEAT.
SO YOU HAVE SOME PAGES THAT
ARE CUT LONGER, AND YOU CAN
FOLD THEM UP.
AND YOU CAN HAVE SPECIAL
MESSAGES BEHIND.
THIS ONE SAYS
HANDS OFF, OKAY?
SO YOU MIGHT HAVE
SOMETHING NEAT BEHIND IT.
YOU CAN ALSO HAVE GLUE ON,
OR TAPE ON LITTLE CARDS AND
THINGS WITH SPECIAL NOTES
BEHIND IT SECRET CODES
AND SO ON.
THIS ONE HERE IS
ANOTHER POCKET.
I LOVE POCKETS.
YOU MIGHT GO ON A SPECIAL
TRIP OR DAY TRIP OR SOMETHING
SPECIAL THAT HAPPENED AT CAMP
OR WHATEVER, MAYBE IT'S A
DIARY TO YOUR TREEHOUSE,
SOMETHING NEAT.
THIS IS A LITTLE PLACE TO
STORE SPECIAL MAPS AND THINGS.
AND ALSO IN THE 3D DIARY
IS ALL SORTS OF REALIA.
HERE'S LIKE A BAND-AID.
MAYBE YOU CUT YOURSELF.
MAYBE YOU WERE RUNNING
AFTER SOMETHING.
ANY PEEKABOO SPECIAL THINGS,
YOU CAN GLUE ON LITTLE CARDS
AND CUT THEM IN DIFFERENT
SHAPES AND THINGS.
HERE'S A SPECIAL DAY, SO YOU
MIGHT HAVE A SPECIAL PAGE
FOR IT.
THIS LOOKS LIKE IT
MIGHT BE A FISHING DAY.
AND HERE'S A LITTLE
FISH THAT'S HANGING.
THIS IS A LITTLE POCK UP,
WHICH IS LIKE A LITTLE POCKET
THAT POPS UP, WHICH IS NEAT,
AND LITTLE TICKET STUBS AND
THINGS YOU CAN SAVE THAT MIGHT
BE STORED BEHIND, AND SO ON.
THIS IS A GAME BOARD PAGE.
YOU MIGHT MAKE THIS IN THE CAR
WHEN YOU ARE GOING SOMEWHERE,
OR YOU'VE BEEN SOMEWHERE
SPECIAL, THIS IS ACTUALLY, IF
YOU PEEK BEHIND, HERE'S THE
SPINNER FOR THE GAME BOARD.
YOU CAN KEEP ALL YOUR
LITTLE COUNTERS IN HERE.
THAT'S A NEAT THING.
YOU CAN INVENT YOUR
OWN GAMES AND SO ON.
LITTLE PEEKABOO THINGS.
HERE'S SOME SNAKE EARRINGS.
THERE'S LOTS OF THINGS IN
HERE IN THE VAMPIRE DIARY.
NOW, WHAT YOU MIGHT LIKE TO
DO IS CREATE YOUR OWN SUMMER
DIARY THAT WOULD BE 3D.
AND WHEN YOU HAVE IT ALL
FINISHED, YOU CAN PUT IT IN
YOUR SUMMER BOX.
AND THAT WOULD BE
SOMETHING NEAT TO DO.
NOW, HERE'S ANOTHER NEAT IDEA.
AND I CALL THIS, FOR THE
SUMMER, MY CAR AND MY CAMP KIT.

Now she shows a new journal with blank pages. Inside, she uses colourful posting sticky notes in different pages. It was all inside a plastic bag labelled under "Car and Camp kit."

She continues
NOW, I KNOW BECAUSE I HAVE A
NUMBER OF CHILDREN OF MY OWN,
AND IF WE GO ON A CAR TRIP,
IT'S ALWAYS GOOD IF KIDS HAVE
SOMETHING TO DO
IN THE BACK SEAT.
AND I'M SURE YOUR PARENTS WILL
BE REALLY HAPPY ABOUT THAT.
NOW, I USE ZIPLOC
BAGS FOR LOTS OF STUFF.
AND INSIDE THE ZIPLOC
BAG, YOU CAN BUY THESE
HARD-COVERED JOURNALS.
THEY'RE NOT TOO EXPENSIVE.
THEY'RE MAYBE 4 DOLLARS.
YOU CAN BUY THEM IN THE
DRUGSTORES AND SO ON.
YOU CAN BUY A LINED
ONE, OR IT CAN BE BLANK.
AND YOU CAN KEEP THIS.
THIS COULD BE A 3D
ONE OF YOUR OWN.
AND IF YOU HAVE IN YOUR KIT,
ALL SORTS OF POST-IT NOTES AND
STICKERS, AND THINGS THAT YOU
MIGHT WANT TO USE AND PLAY
WITH AND WRITING UTENSILS AND
SO ON, YOU CAN SEE YOU CAN
JUST POST THEM ON.
YOU CAN WRITE THINGS.
YOU CAN PUT THINGS UNDERNEATH,
AND YOU CAN WRITE THINGS.
THIS MIGHT BE ONE DAY,
AND ANOTHER, AND SO ON.
SO THAT'S -- THIS IS CALLED
THE CAR KIT, OR CAMP KIT.
AND I KNOW WHEN KIDS GO TO
CAMP, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU DO,
BUT WHEN KIDS GO TO CAMP,
OFTEN THE CAMP ASKS YOU TO
BRING A WRITING KIT FOR RAINY
DAYS, AND WRITING HOME AND SO
ON, WOULDN'T IT BE NICE FOR A
SPECIAL TRIP, OR WHEN YOU ARE
DOING NOTHING TO DO A
WONDERFUL LITTLE KIT LIKE THIS.
SO THAT'S THE SECOND IDEA.
GET THEM ALL DOWN, BECAUSE
YOU'LL FORGET ABOUT THEM IF
YOU DON'T.

She shows a series of diaries and boxes made of different materials.

She continues
NOW, ANOTHER IDEA IS
TO DO SOME JOURNALS.
NOW, I'VE BROUGHT
SOME GREAT SUMMER JOURNALS
TO SHARE WITH YOU.
THIS ONE I CALL THIS
MY ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNAL.
AND YOU CAN SEE THE JOURNAL
IS A BOX, AND IT'S MADE
OF THINGS FROM
THE ENVIRONMENT.
THE ONLY THING IS
YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL.
DON'T TAKE THINGS OFF TREES.
YOU HAVE TO GET THINGS
FROM THE GROUND AND SO ON.
THIS IS ALL BIRCH BARK, AND
IT'S GOT SORT OF GLUED ON IT
SOME DOWN AND SOME FEATHERS
AND SO ON, AND THEN INSIDE THE
BOX, YOU CAN PUT THINGS,
EITHER JOURNAL PAGES,
THINGS THAT YOU'VE DONE.
YOU CAN COLLECT THINGS
FROM THE ENVIRONMENT.
ALL THE THINGS THAT ARE FUN
FOR YOU TO DO THIS SUMMER.
SPECIAL DAYS, ORDINARY
DAYS, AND SO ON.
THAT'S A NEAT BOX.
THIS ONE'S ALL BEEN COVERED
WITH ALMOST LIKE A RICE PAPER.
AND YOU CAN SEE THE
COVER, FRONT AND BACK.
THIS PERSON REALLY SPENT A
LONG TIME CREATING THIS,
JUST GETTING IT READY.
SO THERE'S ANOTHER IDEA.
NOW, MAKING A SUMMER JOURNAL,
IT'S IMPORTANT TO TRY TO KEEP
THAT JOURNAL, MAKE
IT LOOK ALIVE.
HERE'S AN EXAMPLE OF A
COUPLE OF OTHER ONES.
LANGUAGE ALIVE, AND THIS ONE
MIGHT BE MAKING YOUR DIARIES
LOOK ALIVE.
IT'S FUN TO MAKE THINGS THAT
ARE ATTRACTIVE AND FUN
AND FUN TO MAKE.
SO HERE, THIS IS A
VERY NATURAL ONE.
THIS IS MADE OF BEESWAX.
THIS IS AMANDA.
REMEMBER, AMANDA DID THE
SIAMESE, WHAT WAS IT,
THE FIGHTING FISH?
WAS THAT THE ONE
SHE DID, JOSEPH?
YEAH, SHE DID THAT ONE
ON THE SHOW LAST WEEK.
THIS IS HER JOURNAL.
SHE'S GOT IT ALL READY.
AND IT'S GOT ALL SORTS OF
DRIED FLOWERS AND THINGS
ON IT, SO THAT'S FUN.
HERE'S ANOTHER NEAT ONE.
DIARY, SECRET, KEEP OUT.
AND THIS IS A SHOE LACE THAT'S
TIED ON IT, AND IT HAS SOME
FEATHERS AND THINGS ON IT.
SO YOU WANT TO MAKE THINGS,
YOU KNOW, LOOK FUN, HAVE FUN
DOING IT, AND
THAT'S IMPORTANT.
NOW, SOME OTHER IDEAS THAT YOU
MIGHT TRY OVER THE SUMMER IS
ACTUALLY TO DO A
MOVIE TALK BOOKLET.
YOU CAN SEE THE BOOKLET I HAVE
HERE, I'VE SORT OF MADE IT
LOOK A LITTLE
BIT LIKE A MOVIE.
IT'S REALLY A SUMMER
MOVIE JOURNAL.
BUT YOU CAN MAKE IT ALMOST
THREE DIMENSIONAL, AND YOU CAN
PUT TONS OF STUFF IN IT
TO MAKE IT REALLY FUN.
BECAUSE MAYBE THAT'S SOMETHING
YOU'LL DO A LOT OF MOVIES
OR, YOU KNOW, WATCH A LOT OF
VIDEOS THIS SUMMER WITH YOUR
FRIENDS AND SO ON.
NOW, INSIDE HERE, FOR MOVIES
THAT YOU ARE SEEING, OR
THINGS THAT HAVE COME TO
VIDEO, CUT OUT ALL SORTS OF
THINGS, ADVERTISEMENTS AND SO
ON, FROM THE NEWSPAPERS AND
PASTE THEM IN, AND MAKE
LITTLE, YOU KNOW, YOU CAN
PASTE PART OF THEM IN, MAYBE
JUST THE PHOTO OR TITLE,
THAT'S A RECORD OF ONES THAT
YOU WANT TO SEE, OR YOU WILL
BE SEEING, AND SO ON.
YOU CAN COLLECT ALL YOUR
TICKET STUBS, AND YOU CAN
PASTE THEM ALL IN, AND
UNDERNEATH YOUR TICKET STUB,
LIKE THE VAMPIRE DIARY, YOU
MIGHT WANT TO MAKE A RECORD
OF STUFF.
HERE'S MOVIE REVIEWS.
SO YOU MIGHT USE POST-IT
NOTES, AND YOU MIGHT WRITE HOW
YOU ENJOYED THE VIDEO,
WHAT YOU LIKED ABOUT IT,
WHAT YOU DIDN'T.
USING SOME OF THE IDEAS.
HOW DID YOU FEEL?
HOW DID IT MAKE YOU FEEL?
WE TALKED A LOT ABOUT
THAT IN THE SERIES.
AND YOU CAN ALSO, PERHAPS,
MAKE A POCKET WHERE YOU CUT
OUT SOME OF THE REVIEWS
FROM THE NEWSPAPER.
WHAT DID THE CRITICS
SAY ABOUT IT?
WHAT THEY SAY, AND WHAT YOU
SAY, ARE THEY DIFFERENT?
YOU MIGHT ALSO WANT TO DO
A RUBRIC SCALE AND RATE.
YOU CAN DO IT WITH HAPPY
FACES, SAD FACES, I LOVED IT
WITH A HAPPY FACE, IT WAS
OKAY, OR I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE
THAT ONE.
AND WRITE SOME
OF YOUR COMMENTS.
SO THAT'S A MOVIE, A SUMMER
JOURNAL, THAT'S AN IDEA.
AND LASTLY, WE HAVE
THE READING ROLL.

A white paper rolled contains sticky notes and comments all along.

She continues
WE CAN'T FORGET TO READ.
AND THE NICE THING ABOUT THE
SUMMER IS SUMMERTIME READING
CAN BE VERY, VERY DIFFERENT.
YOU DON'T HAVE TEACHERS
TELLING YOU WHAT YOU HAVE
TO READ.
YOUR SUMMERTIME READING
MIGHT BE COMIC BOOKS.
IT MIGHT BE THINGS FROM
THE NEWSPAPERS, THINGS
FROM MAGAZINES.
SO I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE KIND
OF FUN TO MAKE A READ AND ROLL.
WHAT I'VE DONE IS JUST PUT
STRIPS OF PAPER, AND I'VE
TAPED IT ALL TOGETHER
TO MAKE A GIANT ROLL.
AND I JUST ROLLED IT UP TO
UNROLL IT AS YOU RECORD
YOUR READING.
YOU COULD USE THE ACTUAL TAPE
FROM, SAY, AN OLD ADDING
MACHINE TAPE, IF YOU HAVE ANY
OF THOSE HANGING AROUND YOUR
HOUSE, OR YOU CAN
MAKE YOUR OWN.
AND THEN WHAT YOU DO IS YOU
PUT READ AND ROLL AT THE TOP,
AND THEN YOU START YOUR
SUMMER READING LIST.
SO FIRST DAY YOU MAY HAVE READ
AN ARCHIE COMIC BOOK THAT YOU
FOUND AROUND.
SECOND ONE YOU MAY HAVE
READ A GOLF MAGAZINE, SPORTS
ILLUSTRATED, AND YOU RECORD
WHAT YOU'VE READ, HOW YOU
LIKED IT, WHAT YOU DIDN'T LIKE
ABOUT IT, OR MAYBE JUST WRITE
DOWN THE TITLE AS A
RECORD THAT YOU READ IT.
OKAY?
NOW, WHAT YOU COULD DO IS PUT
ALL THESE THINGS THAT YOU
HAVE DONE, AND GET YOUR
SUMMER READING BOX OUT, AND
STORE EVERYTHING IN YOUR
SUMMER READING BOX.
OKAY?
NOW, THAT REALLY IS THE
END OF OUR LAST SERIES.
I'M SORRY TO SAY.
BUT I'M VERY HAPPY TO STAY FOR
15 MINUTES AND ANSWER ANY OF
YOUR QUESTIONS, TALK TO
JOSEPH, AND WE'LL JUST CARRY ON.
I KNOW SOME OF YOU HAVE TO
GO BECAUSE YOUR CLASSES ARE
CHANGING, AND I SURE
KNOW WHAT THAT'S LIKE.
FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT ARE
LEAVING, IT'S A WRAP.
I'VE REALLY ENJOYED
IT, AND HOPE WE'LL BE
CONNECTING AGAIN IN SEPTEMBER.
SO HAVE A WONDERFUL SAFE
SUMMER, AND WE'LL CONTINUE.
SO KING GEORGE,
GOOD MORNING.

Andrea says HI.

She says HI, WHO AM I SPEAKING TO?

Andrea says ANDREA.

She says HI, ANDREA.
DID YOU HAVE A
COMMENT OR A QUESTION?

Andrea says A COMMENT.

She says SURE.

Andrea says HELLO?

She says HI, I'M HERE.

Andrea says I HAVE A QUESTION FOR JOSEPH.

She says OKAY.

Andrea says HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU
TO PRACTICE YOUR SPEECH?

She says OKAY, THAT'S A
VERY GOOD QUESTION.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU
TO PRACTICE YOUR SPEECH?
FROM THE TIME IT
WAS WRITTEN, RIGHT?
TO ACTUALLY THE
DELIVERY PART?

Joseph says YES.

She says
HOW LONG FROM THE TIME YOU
HAD WRITTEN IT UNTIL YOU HAD
TO SPEAK, HOW MUCH TIME DID
IT TAKE YOU TO REHEARSE AND
PRACTICE TO MAKE
IT REALLY GOOD?

Joseph says PROBABLY TOOK, A
COUPLE OF DAYS, A WEEK.

She says OKAY, GOOD.
MAYBE YOU COULD TELL THE
KIDS ALL THE STEPS YOU TOOK
TO GET IT AS GOOD AS IT
WAS ON TV LAST WEEK.
WHAT DID YOU HAVE TO DO?
AFTER YOU WROTE IT, WHAT WERE
THE STEPS THAT YOU TOOK?

Joseph says
AFTER I WROTE IT, I USED
FLASH CARDS, AND I PUT NOTES.
AND THEN AFTER I'VE DONE THAT,
I READ IT, UNTIL IT MADE SENSE.
AND THEN AFTER THAT, I
SAY IT IN FRONT OF MY DAD.
AND HE LOOKED TO SEE
IF I MADE ANY MISTAKE,
THEN I WOULD, LIKE, SAY
IT IN FRONT OF MY DAD
UNTIL I COULD DO IT.
LIKE MEMORIZE IT.

She says GOOD.
DID YOU DO IT IN FRONT OF A
MIRROR, ON A TAPE RECORDER,
ANY OF THOSE IDEAS?

Joseph says YEAH, I DID IT IN
FRONT OF A MIRROR.

She says GOOD.
THAT'S HARD TO
DO, ISN'T IT?
YEAH, THAT'S
REALLY HARD TO DO.
THAT'S WHEN YOU SORT OF LOOK
RIDICULOUS, AND YOU WANT
TO CHANGE THINGS.
BUT CERTAINLY DOING IT IN
FRONT OF THE MIRROR IS WHEN
YOU SORT OF PRACTICE
SOME OF THE GESTURES.
AND WE TALKED ABOUT LAST
WEEK, THAT WAS A GOOD WAY TO
IMPROVE YOUR PRESENTATION IS
TO HAVE SOME GESTURES
AND SOME EXPRESSION.
SO IF YOU STAND IN FRONT
OF THE MIRROR, AND YOU SEE
YOURSELF DOING IT, THEN MAYBE
YOU'LL REMEMBER TO DO IT WHEN
YOU ARE ACTUALLY
GIVING YOUR SPEECH.
SO THAT WAS A VERY
GOOD QUESTION.
OKAY, ELGIN AVENUE,
GOOD MORNING.

Angela says GOOD MORNING.

She says HI.
WHO AM I SPEAKING TO?

Angela says ANGELA.

She says HI, ANGELA.
DID YOU HAVE A QUESTION?

Angela says YEAH.
WHERE DOES JOSEPH
KEEP HIS TROPHY?
DOES HE TAKE IT HOME OR
DOES HE LEAVE IT AT SCHOOL?

She says THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION.
JOSEPH -- WHAT WAS YOUR NAME?
ANGELA?

Angela says YEAH.

She says ANGELA WANTS TO KNOW WHAT
DO YOU DO WITH YOUR TROPHY?
DID YOU HAVE TO LEAVE IT
AT THE SCHOOL, OR WERE YOU
ALLOWED TO TAKE IT HOME?

Joseph says
I WAS ALLOWED
TO TAKE IT HOME.
SO I PUT IT IN MY
ROOM, NEAR MY BED.

She says RIGHT BESIDE HIS BED.
THAT'S A VERY GOOD QUESTION.
BECAUSE THAT MUST BE
DISHEARTENING IF SOMEONE WINS
A TROPHY AND THEN THEY
KEEP IT AT THE SCHOOL.
NO, WE LIKE TO GIVE THE
TROPHIES TO THE KIDS
'COS IT'S A KEEPER.
THAT'S HIS FOREVER
AND EVER.
OKAY, USBORNE,
GOOD MORNING.

Holly says HELLO?

She says HI, DID YOU HAVE A
COMMENT OR QUESTION?

Holly says I HAD A QUESTION.

She says OKAY.

Holly says WHAT WAS HIS TOPIC
OF THE SPEECH?

She says OKAY, WERE YOU NOT
WITH US LAST WEEK?

Holly says NO.

She says OH, OKAY.
JOSEPH -- WHAT WAS THE
TOPIC OF YOUR SPEECH?
BECAUSE THIS STUDENT

- WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
JUSTIN?

Holly says THIS IS HOLLY.

She says HOLLY, OKAY.
HOLLY WANTED TO KNOW WHAT THE
TOPIC OF YOUR SPEECH WAS?
SHE DIDN'T SEE THE
TV SHOW LAST WEEK.

Joseph says MY TOPIC WAS
ABOUT BEING DEAF.

She says RIGHT.
THAT'S A POSITIVE THING.
AND WHAT WE TRY TO DO,
CERTAINLY IN MY CLASSROOM,
WE TRY TO TURN THINGS
AROUND A LOT, TO LOOK
AT THE POSITIVE SIDE.
SO JOSEPH DECIDED HE WOULD
WRITE HIS ON ALL THE POSITIVE
THINGS ABOUT BEING DEAF.
AND HE CERTAINLY HAD
A LOT OF POSITIVES.
ESPECIALLY TURNING OFF
Mrs. UJ IN THE CLASSROOM.
I THOUGHT THAT WAS
REALLY TOP NOTCH.
OKAY, WE WILL TAKE
SOME MORE CALLS.
OKAY.
SO JOSEPH, HOW DO YOU
LIKE BEING ON TELEVISION?

Joseph says UM, IT'S FUN.

She says IT'S FUN, EH?
YEAH.
BOTH OF US ARE OUT OF THE
CLASSROOM FOR AN HOUR.
IT'S KIND OF FUN, EH?
OKAY, GOOD MORNING,
KING GEORGE?

The Caller says HELLO.

She says HI.
DID YOU HAVE A
QUESTION OR A COMMENT?

The Caller says I HAVE A QUESTION.

She says OKAY.

The Caller says HOW DID YOU BECOME
INTERESTED IN ORAL SPEAKING?

She says THIS IS FOR JOSEPH, RIGHT?

The Caller says YES.

She says OKAY, HOW DID YOU BECOME
INTERESTED IN ORAL SPEAKING?

Joseph says UM...
HOW DID I BECOME
INTERESTED...

She says MAYBE SHE MEANS LIKE HOW DID
YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN IT?
WELL, YOU'VE HAD TO BE
INTERESTED IN IT ALL ALONG
BECAUSE ORAL SPEAKING IS SO
IMPORTANT TO YOU, RIGHT?

Joseph says YEAH.

She says SO HOW DID YOU BECOME
INTERESTED IN IT?

Joseph says
WHEN YOU SAID TO DO PUBLIC
SPEAKING, I JUST THOUGHT, I
GOT REALLY INTERESTED DOING IT
BECAUSE I THOUGHT TO DO IT
ON BEING DEAF.
I WAS REALLY INTERESTED IN
SPEAKING IN FRONT OF THE CLASS.

She says THAT'S RIGHT.
THAT'S RIGHT.
JOSEPH REALLY WANTED TO GET
UP IN FRONT OF THE CLASS AND
HAVE TO SAY HIS SPEECH.
THAT'S PRETTY WEIRD, EH?
THAT'S GREAT.
AND IT WAS SUCH A GOOD
CONFIDENCE BUILDER, FOR,
I THINK, EVERYONE.
AND THE MORE AND MORE YOU DO
IT, BY THE TIME YOU PEOPLE DO
YOUR SPEECH WHEN YOU ARE OAC,
YOU'LL JUST HAVE IT DOWN PAT
BECAUSE NOW, WITH THE FOCUS
BEING ORAL VISUAL, IT'LL JUST
GET EASIER, EASIER AND
EASIER, THE MORE WE DO IT.
OKAY, COLLEGE
AVENUE, GOOD MORNING.

Sarah says HI.

She says HI.
WHO'S THIS?

Sarah says I HAVE A QUESTION FOR JOSEPH.

She says WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

Sarah says SARAH.

She says OKAY, SARAH.

Sarah says HOW DID HE LEARN TO TALK
IF HE COULDN'T HEAR PEOPLE?

She says THAT'S A REALLY
GOOD QUESTION.
OKAY, HOW DID YOU LEARN TO
SPEAK WHEN YOU COULDN'T HEAR?
HOW DID YOU LEARN THAT?
WE'LL JUST MOVE THIS.
I'M NOT STEALING
IT, DON'T WORRY.

Joseph says
WELL, I DIDN'T LEARN
TO SPEAK WITHOUT THIS.
I HAVE A SPECIAL FIT, I WENT
TO A SPECIALIST EAR DOCTOR,
AUDIOLOGIST, AND HE
GAVE ME A HEARING AID
SO I CAN HEAR SOME STUFF.
AND THAT HELPS ME SPEAK.
SO I DIDN'T SPEAK
WITHOUT HEARING.
IT WOULD BE ALMOST
IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO LEARN.

She says RIGHT.
SO JOSEPH, YOU HAD TO HAVE THE
SPECIAL, THE THINGS IN YOUR
EAR SO YOU COULD
HEAR A BIT, RIGHT?
BECAUSE YOUR PRONUNCIATION
IS EXCELLENT.
IT IS.
OKAY, JACK MINOR,
GOOD MORNING.

Nick says HELLO.

She says HI.
WHO AM I SPEAKING TO?

Nick says NICK.

She says HI, NICK.
DID YOU HAVE A
QUESTION OR COMMENT?

Nick says WHAT DOES HE FIND INTERESTING
ABOUT ORAL SPEAKING?

She says OKAY, NICK WANTS TO KNOW
WHAT YOU FIND INTERESTING
ABOUT ORAL SPEAKING?
NICK, DO YOU FIND ORAL
SPEAKING NOT THAT INTERESTING?

Nick says NOT REALLY.

She says OKAY.
SO NICK WANTS TO KNOW WHAT
YOU FOUND INTERESTING ABOUT
HAVING TO DO A SPEECH?
BECAUSE NICK WASN'T TOO KEEN
ABOUT HAVING TO DO ONE.
HE DOESN'T FIND IT
THAT INTERESTING.
WHAT'S INTERESTING?
WE HAVE TO ENCOURAGE HIM TO
BE AS INTERESTED AS YOU ARE.

Joseph says WELL, I WAS INTERESTED
BECAUSE WE CAN KNOW WHAT OTHER
PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THEM,
I WAS INTERESTED IN WHAT
OTHER PEOPLE ARE SAYING, TOO.
THAT'S WHY I WAS INTERESTED.

She says OKAY, OKAY.
THAT'S GOOD.
I THINK JOSEPH REALIZED ORAL
COMMUNICATION FOR HIM IS
SOMETHING HE'S HAD TO REALLY
LEARN HOW TO DO BECAUSE HE HAD
A LITTLE BIT OF A
STUMBLING BLOCK.
SO THAT'S WHY IT'S SO
IMPORTANT TO HIM SO EVERYBODY
CAN COMMUNICATE WITH HIM.
BUT I THINK THE FUN THING IS,
DID YOU FIND BECAUSE WE HAD A
CONTEST THAT WAS REALLY
SOMETHING THAT MOTIVATED YOU?
WE KNEW RIGHT OFF THE
BAT, 'COS WE HAD SEEN,
Mrs. USHER-JONES, SHE
BOUGHT THE TROPHIES.
SO YOU KNEW THERE WAS GOING
TO BE THIS CARROT AT THE END.
WAS IT THE TROPHY YOU FOUND,
WAS THAT SOMETHING, OR DID YOU
REALLY WANT TO GO SPEAK IN
FRONT OF ALL THE GRADE SEVENS?

Joseph says I DIDN'T REALLY WANT TO
'COS I WAS REALLY NERVOUS.
BECAUSE I HAD TO SPEAK IN
FRONT OF EVERYBODY.
I DIDN'T REALLY LIKE TO SPEAK
IN FRONT OF A LOT OF PEOPLE
BECAUSE I WAS REALLY NERVOUS.
BUT THEN I GOT OVER IT.

She says SURE.
ONCE YOU OVERCOME THAT,
IT'S LIKE ANYTHING, RIGHT?
IT'S LIKE YOUR FIRST TIME AWAY
TO GO TO CAMP, AND YOU'RE
REALLY NERVOUS, THEN THE NEXT
YEAR YOU HARDLY SAY GOOD-BYE
TO YOUR PARENTS.
OKAY, COLLEGE
AVENUE, GOOD MORNING.

The Caller says HELLO.

She says HI.
DID YOU HAVE A
QUESTION OR COMMENT?

The Caller says
I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS.
ONE, WHERE DID YOU GET
THAT VAMPIRE DIARY THING?

She says OKAY.
IT'S GREAT, ISN'T IT?
WOULDN'T YOU JUST LOVE
TO HAVE ONE OF THOSE?
THIS, I THINK, CAME FROM THE
TORONTO CHILDREN'S BOOKSTORE.
AND I'LL JUST TELL YOU, THE
AUTHOR IS PLEXI WISHBONE.
I'LL PUT IT DOWN
UNDER HERE FOR YOU.
AND I THINK YOU CAN PROBABLY
GET IT IN BOOKSTORES.
RAINCOAST BOOKS
IS THE PUBLISHER.
OKAY?
THAT'S A POPULAR ONE.
I THINK EVERYBODY IS GOING
TO WANT TO MAKE THAT.
IT SOUNDS LIKE A REALLY FUN
THING TO DO OVER THE SUMMER.
OKAY, WE HAVE A COUPLE MORE
MINUTES, AND WE WILL TAKE SOME
MORE -- OKAY, WELL, JOSEPH,
YOU KNOW, THIS SUMMER,
WHAT I'M GOING TO BE DOING
IS, FIRST OF ALL, I'M GOING TO
PUT ON MY HAT.

She puts on a headpiece made of white flowers.

She continues
AND MAYBE YOU CAN TELL ME WHAT
MY SUMMER IS SHAPING UP LIKE.
I'VE USUALLY BROUGHT SOMETHING
IN TO SHOW EVERYBODY LIKE
SORT OF HAD A LITTLE BIT
OF A GIMMICK OR A PROP OR
SOMETHING, AND THIS IS MY SORT
OF GOOD-BYE HAT TO THE KIDS
OUT IN THE VIRTUAL CLASSROOM.
SO AFTER YOU SEE ME WITH MY
SUMMER HAT ON, WHAT DOES THIS
TELL YOU I MIGHT BE DOING IN
THE SUMMER WHEN ALL THE KIDS
ARE GOING TO BE DOING
THEIR SUMMER BOXES?

Joseph says
YOU'RE GOING TO BE
PLANTING, RELAXING.

She says YES, YES.
IS THERE SOMETHING ON MY HAT
THAT TELLS YOU I MIGHT BE
DOING SOME PLANTING?

Joseph says YEAH.
THERE ARE FLOWERS, AND THERE
IS WATER THAT POURS WATER OUT.

She says THAT'S RIGHT.
IT'S A WATERING CAN.
SO I HAVE MY OWN
WATERING CAN HERE.
AND I HOPE YOU ENJOY
YOUR SUMMER BOXES.
HAVE A LOT OF FUN.
I HOPE YOU GOT ALL
THOSE IDEAS DOWN.
IF YOU DIDN'T GET THEM ALL
DOWN, THEN MAKE SURE YOU GET
THEM BEFORE YOU LEAVE
YOUR VIRTUAL CLASSROOM.
AND HAVE A TERRIFIC SUMMER.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR COMING
TO VISIT US TODAY, JOSEPH.
AND THAT'S IT.
WE'LL SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER.
BYE FOR NOW.
