Colourful geometric shapes slide slowly on the screen with the title “ARTS AND YOUTH” on a grey textured background.

A clip appears of a male and female dancer in a dance studio dancing.

A female voice says FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT!

(Theme music plays)

A caption reads Rick Benedict. Rick is a teen and has long brown hair and fringe.
He wears a black shirt. Rick sits in a dance studio.

Rick says DANCE IS LIKE, I GUESS YOU
WOULD SAY, MY PASSION.
AND THERE'S NOTHING
ELSE I'D RATHER DO.
I DECIDED TO TAKE
DANCE IN SCHOOL
BECAUSE I WAS JUST TIRED
OF STAYING AT HOME
AND TEACHING MYSELF.
I FELT LIKE THAT I JUST
WASN'T GETTING ANYWHERE.
AND THEN WHEN I HEARD ABOUT
THIS, IT WAS A GOOD IDEA.
I WANTED TO FURTHER MY
EDUCATION IN DANCE
AND TRY AND BECOME
A PERFORMER.

A clip shows Rick on the dance floor with a dance instructor.

Rick says WHEN I FIRST GOT
INTO THE PROGRAM,
I WAS LIKE IN A
CORNER, AND I'M LIKE,
OH, WHAT AM I
DOING HERE?
BUT AFTER A COUPLE OF
WEEKS, I WAS LIKE TOTALLY OPEN.
AND EVERYONE WAS
SO FRIENDLY.
I MADE SO MANY FRIENDS.
AND I JUST
OPENED RIGHT UP.
AND IT'S JUST LIKE ONE BIG
HAPPY FAMILY IN HERE.
I GOT INVOLVED THROUGH DANCE
THROUGH LIKE FAMILY MEMBERS.
THEY'D TAKE ME TO POWWOWS AND
SOCIALS AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
ONE TIME I WAS REALLY
YOUNG AND I REMEMBER THIS,
I WAS AT A POWWOW
AND IT WAS AT NIGHT.
I WAS WATCHING THEM
SING AND EVERYTHING.
AND THEN MY UNCLE CAME UP AND HE
SAID, GO UP THERE AND DANCE.
AND I SAID, I DON'T
KNOW HOW TO DANCE.
AND I WENT UP THERE AND
WATCHED OTHER PEOPLE,
AND IT CAME NATURALLY.

A clip shows Rick and several dancers dancing in unison. Then a clip of Rick sitting at a bench in a park.

A female instructor says FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, GO!
ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR,
FIVE, SIX, SEPARATE.
EIGHT, SEVEN, SIX,
FIVE, FOUR...

Rick says IT TAKES A LONG TIME
TO BECOME A DANCER.
THERE'S A LOT OF
DISCIPLINE INVOLVED.
AND YOU REALLY HAVE
TO PUSH YOURSELF
BEYOND YOUR LIMITS, AND
REALLY UNDERSTAND AND FEEL
THE DANCE THAT YOU'RE DOING
INSTEAD OF JUST DOING IT.
I THINK LIKE IT'S A RELIEVER.
WHEN YOU'RE DOING MATH, IT'S
REAL TENSE AND EVERYTHING.
BUT WHEN YOU CAN SWITCH
TO ANOTHER THING,
LIKE SPORTS OR DANCE, OR SOMETHING
IT'S LIKE AN OUTLET
AND YOU'LL JUST RELAX AND
WON'T GET ALL STRESSED OUT
AND BURNT OUT.
BESIDES THIS CLASS, I
HAVE THREE OTHERS.
AND BESIDES THOSE THREE OTHERS,
I GET HOMEWORK AND EVERYTHING.
AND WHEN I'M DONE HERE I GO
AND TEACH AND THEN I GO HOME.
LIKE I DON'T REALLY HAVE
TIME FOR MUCH ELSE,
OTHER THAN JUST DANCING.
I GOT INTO TEACHING -LIKE I
JOINED THIS DANCE SCHOOL.
I WAS JUST LEARNING
NEW STUFF.
AND MY DANCE TEACHER SHE
NOTICED THAT I'VE IMPROVED
A LOT, LIKE A LOT A LOT AND SHE SAID, DO YOU
WANT TO TRY A COUPLE CLASSES?
SO I SUBSTITUTED FOR HER
FOR A COUPLE OF CLASSES
AND SHE WATCHED ME.
AND SHE SAID, OH, YOU'RE
DOING PRETTY GOOD.
DO YOU WANT YOUR
OWN CLASSES?
I WAS LIKE, WHAT?
SHE JUST GAVE ME CLASSES AND THAT'S HOW I GOT INTO TEACHING.
THROUGH DANCING I TRY TO EXPRESS
THAT NOT JUST I CAN DANCE.
AND GUYS CAN DANCE TOO.
I JUST WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW
THAT DANCE IS IN AN ART.
AND ANYBODY CAN DO IT
IF THEY REALLY TRY.

(Theme music plays)
A clip shows Rick on stage dancing solo and then spinning around with a female partner.

Rick says I WANT TO PURSUE DANCE
AS A CAREER, BECAUSE
I WANT TO BECOME
A PERFORMER.
AND EVEN THOUGH YOU CAN
DANCE, DOESN'T MEAN
YOU'LL AUTOMATICALLY GO
INTO A COMPANY RIGHT AWAY
AND BECOME A DANCER.
THERE'S A LOT OF
COMPETITION.
I'M NOT GOING TO
LET IT STOP ME.
I STILL WANT
TO GO INTO IT.
WHEN I'M REALLY
SAD OR SOMETHING,
I JUST TURN TO
DANCE AND JUST GO NUTS.
I LIKE IT WHEN I'M ALONE IN
THIS ROOM, LIKE THE DANCE ROOM,
BECAUSE I CAN DO WHATEVER
I WANT AND FEEL FREE,
AND I KNOW NOBODY'S
WATCHING ME,
SO I FEEL REALLY
COMFORTABLE IN HERE.
AND IT JUST CLEARS MY MIND AND
RELAXES ME AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
THAT’S USUALLY- THAT'S HOW I USE IT FOR
NOW, JUST GETTING AWAY
FROM EVERYBODY AND
THINKING ABOUT OTHER THINGS.
LIVING.
