A clip shows a boy walking through the forest with books in hand. Then it changes to a painting of a dog and her puppy next to a tractor followed by a baby in a brown frame with a blue jumper and white shirt.

A caption reads Kris Pearn. Kris is a teenager and has glasses and brown hair. He wears a black long sleeved shirt and a white shirt. Kris sits in an art studio surrounded by paintings.

Kris says I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED NATURE,
EVER SINCE I WAS A LITTLE KID.
GROWING UP IN THE COUNTRY, WE
HAD A BUSH BEHIND OUR LOT.
ALWAYS HAD ANIMALS LIKE DOGS
AND CATS AND NOW WE HAVE GOATS AND WHAT HAVE YOU.
I'VE ALWAYS BEEN AROUND
THAT SORT OF ENVIRONMENT,
SO IT'S NATURAL FOR ME TO
PAINT THAT KIND OF ENVIRONMENT.
ART'S PRETTY MUCH ALWAYS
BEEN A PART OF ME.
I'VE ALWAYS LOVED DRAWING
AND DOODLING AND SKETCHING.
AND PLAYING AROUND WITH
PENCIL AND THE PAPER,
JUST WHENEVER I
HAD SPARE TIME.
EVER SINCE I WAS
PROBABLY IN THE WOMB, YOU KNOW
I WAS ALWAYS
INTERESTED IN IT.
THERE WAS REALLY NO SET DAY
WHEN I WOKE UP IN THE MORNING
AND SAID I WANT TO
BE INTERESTED IN ART.
IT'S A GRADUAL THING THAT'S
ALWAYS BEEN PART OF ME.
I GUESS IT'S NATURAL.
I DON'T REALLY KNOW
HOW IT STARTED.

A clip shows Kris as he walks into school, then concentrating on painting a reproduction in an art classroom with several other students at long tables.

Kris continues ART HAS ROUNDED
OUT MY EDUCATION.
I ENJOY GOING TO SCHOOL
MOST OF THE TIME.
I THINK BECAUSE IT IS OF
ART AND COURSES LIKE ART
THAT I ENJOY TO DO.
OTHERWISE, SCHOOL WOULD JUST
BE A BORING, MONOTONOUS THING.
EVERY DAY GETTING
UP IN THE MORNING
TAKING SUBJECTS THAT YOU
DON'T REALLY WANT TO TAKE,
BUT YOU HAVE TO TAKE.
I THINK ART REALLY PROVIDES
A NICE BALANCE IN MY LIFE,
AND MAKES SCHOOL A
LITTLE MORE ENJOYABLE.
I THINK MY ART HAS ALWAYS
OPENED MY MIND TO EXPLORING
DIFFERENT ASPECTS.
EVEN IN WRITING I FIND I
ENJOY WRITING CREATIVE PIECES
IN ENGLISH AND OTHER
COURSES LIKE THAT.
I THINK ART IS A BIG
REASON WHY I ENJOY IT,
BECAUSE IT'S ALL PART
OF THE CREATIVE IDEA.

A clip shows the art teacher with the blender filled with red recycled paper. Then, the paper sits in a large aluminum tin filled with water and recycled paper. The teacher pours the contents of the blender into the tin. Then, he uses a wooden block and a sifter to lift it out of the tin and place the newly formed paper on the table.

Kris says TODAY WE WERE
MAKING PAPER. THAT WAS FOR A-
WE WERE GOING TO TAKE THIS
PAPER, WHICH WAS RECYCLED,
AND MAKE THEM INTO
A STORYBOOK.
AND IT'S GOING TO BE
A CHILDREN'S STORY.
AND WE'RE GOING TO PUT OUR
STORY ON IT THAT WE CREATED
ON OUR OWN AND
ILLUSTRATE IT.
IT TEACHES YOU
DIFFERENT THINGS.
IT TEACHES YOU THE WRITING PART
AND IT'S DEFINITELY TEACHING
US HOW TO RECYCLE PAPER
WHICH IS A FACT OF OUR
ENVIRONMENT TODAY,
BECAUSE IT IS IN
SUCH BAD SHAPE.
WE'RE LEARNING RECYCLING AND
HOW TO START FROM SCRATCH
WHICH IS SOMETHING
THAT'S INTERESTING.
YOU MAKE YOUR OWN PAPER
AND THEN YOU PAINT ON IT
SO IT'S DEFINITELY
YOUR BOOK.
YOU MADE THAT RIGHT
FROM THE GROUND UP.

A clip shows Kris feeding goats on the farm next to a fence. Then changes to a painting of a goat, followed by a painting of a chipmunk. Then sketches of Kris’s cartoons.

Kris continues BESIDES ART, I ALSO
WORK AT A GAS STATION;
THAT GIVES ME MONEY TO
SUPPORT MY ART HOBBY.
ALSO WE LIVE ON A FARM SO THERE'S
WORK TO DO AROUND THERE AND THAT KIND OF STUFF.
I FEATURE SOME ANIMALS
BECAUSE I ENJOY ANIMALS.
AS I'VE SAID BEFORE, I'VE
GROWN UP AROUND ANIMALS.
AND I LOVE ANIMALS.
I LOVE WATCHING THEM.
I LOVE PETTING THEM.
I HAVE TWO DOGS AT HOME.
I THINK ANIMALS ARE JUST AN
ENJOYMENT TO THE WORLD.
A LOT OF PEOPLE TAKE
THEM FOR GRANTED.
AND I ENJOY
PAINTING THEM.
I GOT INTERESTED IN CARTOONING
JUST BY WATCHING CARTOONS,
AND READING SATURDAY
MORNING COMICS
AND SEEING THEM AROUND ME
AND I'D TRY TO IMITATE THEM.
AND THAT'S HOW I STARTED.
BECAUSE WHEN I WAS A LITTLE
KID, I ENJOYED WATCHING THEM
AND I ENJOYED TRYING
TO COPY THEM.
IT'S FUN.
IT'S SOMETHING I CAN
DO IN MY SPARE TIME.
YOU CAN PUT SUSPENSE
AND HUMOUR IN IT.
THERE'S NO LAWS
IN CARTOONING.
YOU CAN DO
WHATEVER YOU WANT.
YOU CAN MAKE YOUR CHARACTERS
HOWEVER BIG, HOWEVER SMALL,
WHAT COLOUR YOU WANT; IT
DOESN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
SOMETHING TO DO FOR FUN.
I THINK ART ALWAYS GIVES
ME SOMETHING TO DO,
SOMETHING TO
LOOK FORWARD TO.

A clip shows Kris as he paints underneath his own painting in his bedroom.

Kris continues CAUSE I THINK WE ALL HAVE TO
FEEL THAT WE'RE IMPORTANT
AND HAVE A ROLE, AND
THAT'S WHAT ART IS FOR ME.
IT'S WHAT I'M GOOD AT
SO AND I ENJOY DOING IT.
IT MAKES ME FEEL BETTER- GOOD,
ESPECIALLY WHEN I'M DONE
A PAINTING OR IN THE
PROCESS OF A PAINTING
BECAUSE I'M BUSY,
I'M DOING SOMETHING.
THAT'S BASICALLY
WHAT ART IS FOR ME.
I'D LIKE TO GET A CAREER IN
SOMETHING LIKE ANIMATION,
OR JUST STRAIGHT PAINTING
LIKE I'M DOING RIGHT NOW.
I ENJOY THAT VERY MUCH TOO,
OR COMMERCIAL ART,
OR WHATEVER HAPPENS.
I'M NOT REALLY SURE.
MY DOORS ARE ALL
OPEN TO ANYTHING.
ART'S NOT MY
ONLY CAREER.
I HAVE OTHER OPTIONS.
BUT ART'S DEFINITELY ONE
OF MY FIRST CHOICES.
I THINK TO BE A GOOD
ARTIST, YOU
HAVE TO HAVE DEFINITELY HAVE TO HAVE A
TALENT TO WORK WITH
AND YOU ALSO HAVE TO BE
WILLING TO WORK AT IT.
BUT I THINK TO
BECOME SUCCESSFUL,
YOU HAVE TO HAVE THAT
DISCIPLINE THERE.
BECAUSE THERE ARE A LOT
OF PEOPLE WITH TALENT
IN THIS WORLD, BUT THEY
DON'T GO ON WITH IT.
YOU HAVE TO NURTURE
YOUR TALENT,
YOU HAVE TO
STICK WITH IT.
AND IF YOU HAVE THE TALENT
BUT YOU DON'T ENJOY IT,
THEN YOU'RE NOT GOING
TO GO ANYWHERE,
BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO
ENJOY WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
BECAUSE IF YOU
ENJOY PAINTING IT,
THEN PEOPLE WILL ENJOY
LOOKING AT IT, I THINK.
THAT ENJOYMENT SHINES
THROUGH ON YOUR WORK.
