Colourful geometric shapes slide slowly on the screen with the title “ARTS AND YOUTH” on a grey textured background.

[Playing jazz music]

A clip shows a boy playing on the piano in a music room. A caption reads Michael Doherty. Michael has brown hair and wears a plaid green button up shirt. He is in a music room with guitars behind him. Then Michael is shown composing music at his piano and then playing.

Michael says I FIRST GOT STARTED IN
MUSIC WHEN I WAS ABOUT
SIX YEARS OLD WHEN MY
PARENTS BOUGHT ME A PIANO,
AND I STARTED FOOLING
AROUND WITH IT.
I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE IT;
I DIDN'T LIKE PLAYING OR
PRACTICING OR ANYTHING.
BUT GRADUALLY, I GOT INTO
DOING MUSIC FESTIVALS
AND PLAYING MORE
CHALLENGING PIECES,
AND I JUST GOT TO
LIKE IT MORE AND MORE.
AND YOU KNOW THROUGH SCHOOL
AND EVERYTHING,
I'VE BEEN ABLE TO HAVE A
GREATER INVOLVEMENT IN MUSIC.
I PLAY PIANO IN STAGE BAND
AND JAZZ COMBO AT SCHOOL,
AND I WRITE PIECES
FOR BOTH OF THEM.
AND ALSO, I DO
COMPOSING ON THE SIDE.
I COMPOSE PRETTY WELL
FROM JUST FRAGMENTS
THAT TEND TO
APPEAR IN MY HEAD.
YOU KNOW I GET INSPIRED FROM
WHATEVER - NOTHING
NECESSARILY VERY CONSCIOUS,
BUT JUST WHEN I HAVE
SOMETHING RUNNING
THROUGH MY HEAD
AND I'LL NOTICE THAT IT'S
INTERESTING AND I MIGHT
PLAY AROUND WITH IT ON
THE PIANO FOR A WHILE.
IT'S A LONG PROCESS
OF ACTUALLY WRITING
EVERYTHING DOWN, BUT
IT'S A REALLY SATISFYING
EXPERIENCE TOO, JUST TO
BE ABLE TO HEAR WHAT'S
IN YOUR HEAD AND ALSO TO HAVE
OTHER PEOPLE ENJOY IT AS WELL.

[Practicing trumpet]

A clip shows students in white shirts and black pants and skirts as they arrange the stage, moving the piano and reviewing their music. Then students arranging the drums, the saxophones, and the trumpets. Finally each section is shown playing their instruments: trumpets, cello, and saxophones.

Michael says STAGE BAND HAS AROUND
20 PEOPLE IN IT: SAX,
TROMBONE, TRUMPET,
AND RHYTHM SECTIONS.
IT'S GOOD TO WORK WITH A
LARGE BAND BECAUSE THERE
ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT
SECTIONS OF PEOPLE,
AND YOU CAN GET A REALLY
BIG SOUND OUT OF IT.
LIKE, IT TAKES A LOT OF
REHEARSAL TIME OF GOING
THROUGH PIECES OVER
AND OVER AGAIN,
BUT WHEN YOU FINALLY GET
TO PERFORM AND YOU GET
THAT BIG SOUND, IT'S REALLY
FUN TO GET EVERYTHING
HAPPENING, AND EVERYONE
PLAYING TOGETHER.
BEING ABLE TO BE A PART OF
THAT KIND OF A BIG BAND IS FUN.

Male instructor says ONE, TWO, THREE.

[Playing big band music]

Michael says THERE ARE TRIPS INVOLVED
WITH THE STAGE BAND,
DEPENDING ON WHAT
YOU FEEL LIKE DOING.
LIKE, THIS YEAR WE'RE
GOING TO THE MUSIC FEST
IN HALIFAX, BUT YOU CAN
MANAGE TO GET INVITED TO
MANY PLACES, IF YOU FEEL
LIKE IT - ANYWHERE
FROM HAWAII TO AMSTERDAM.
YOU KNOW IT'S A REALLY WIDE
FIELD OF EXPERIENCE,
AND YOU CAN TAKE IT TO
MANY DIFFERENT PLACES TO
LEARN HOW OTHER CULTURES
APPRECIATE MUSIC AS WELL.
I MEET A LOT OF PEOPLE
WHO HAVE SOME OF THE SAME
INTERESTS AS YOU, AND
YOU'RE TOGETHER FOR SUCH
A LONG TIME THAT YOU REALLY
GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER WELL,
AND YOU CAN
MAKE FRIENDS,
AND YOU KNOW DO OTHER
THINGS AS WELL.

(Theme music plays)

A clip shows Michael on the piano, Andrew on bass and Hari on the drums in the music room, playing music.

Michael says OUR JAZZ COMBO CONSISTS OF
MYSELF ON PIANO AND ANDREW
PLUMB ON BASS AND HARI
VISWANATHAN ON DRUMS.
AND WE PLAY AROUND DIFFERENT
AREAS OF TOWN SOMETIMES,
WE GET GIGS TO DO
SHOWS, AND IT'S JUST
A FUN THING TO BE
ABLE TO EVEN JAM OUT.
JUST SOME DAYS, EVERYBODY
SEEMS TO REALLY BE ON,
AND IT'S JUST A REALLY FUN
EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYONE
TO BE SPONTANEOUSLY CREATING
AND PLAYING AND GETTING
INTO A GROOVE, SO THE
MUSIC SOUNDS REALLY GOOD.

[Playing jazz music]

A close up of Michael playing the piano, extends to the group playing their instruments.

Michael says I THINK GETTING INVOLVED IN
ARTS IS A REALLY GOOD IDEA,
EVEN IF YOU JUST PICK
ONE LITTLE PART OF IT
TO GET INVOLVED IN.
IF YOU PLAY A
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT,
OR IF YOU PAINT, OR IF
YOU ACT OR WHATEVER,
IT'S JUST A WHOLE NEW WORLD
THAT IS OPENED UP TO YOU.
AND EVEN IF YOU DON'T
THINK THAT YOU'RE TALENTED
AT FIRST, YOU CAN START
GETTING INTO IT AND
LEARNING TECHNIQUES
AND THINGS,
AND I THINK YOU'LL DISCOVER
MORE ABOUT YOURSELF.
AND I THINK MOST PEOPLE
DON'T QUITE KNOW EXACTLY
HOW MUCH THEY CAN DO; THEY
HAVEN'T REALLY TAPPED
THEIR FULL POTENTIAL
UNTIL THEY REALLY
TRY SOMETHING
AND GET INTO IT.
