A young man in a tuxedo juggles a few pins as he walks past a shop that reads “The Science Cafe” on the window. Another man hops up the stairs and waves his magic wand as he produces a bunch of flowers in his left hand.
The door opens. The man turns and hands the flowers to a woman dressed in white as she leaves the cafe.
A few people drink coffee at the counter. A server puts a menu on the counter and smiles.
A white slate with a black polka dotted diamond in the center appears. It reads “The Science Cafe” in light blue and pink.
The menu of the cafe appears. It reads “appetizers; Tidbits of discovery, simmering with excitement; slices of knowledge seasoned with perception; Tangy delights of wisdom and intelligence. Entrées; Chunks of scholarship laced with enchantment; nourishing morsels of science facts and breakthroughs; Sustaining portions of education and information; Fascinating helpings of philosophy and Learning.

The Science cafe proudly offers food for thought; Fragile Nature Forum, Environmental Action; a passing fancy? Producer and director Michael Kushner, Researcher Nadine Galszcchy.”

Ruth appears on screen. She’s in her thirties; has short wavy brown hair and wears large square glasses and a blue coat. A caption below her reads “Ruth McKlusky, Solar energy society of Canada Inc.”

She says I SINCERELY HOPE THAT THE
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES OF TODAY
AREN'T A FAD, BECAUSE THEY'RE
NOT GOING TO GO AWAY.
THE MEDIA AND THE
POLITICIANS HAVE ALL
JUMPED ON THE BANDWAGON.
I DON'T THINK THAT'S ENTIRELY
BAD BECAUSE THE PUBLIC NEEDS
TO BE INFORMED AND BE MADE
AWARE ABOUT THE PROBLEMS WE'RE
FACING SINCE THE FIRST STEP
OF SOLVING A PROBLEM IS
RECOGNIZING ITS EXISTENCE.

Peter appears on screen. He’s in his fifties; has short gray hair and wears a moustache. He’s dressed in a suit and tie. A caption below him reads “Peter Scott Smith, Canadian Earth Energy Association.”

He says WE DON'T SEE MANY POSITIVE
SOLUTIONS COMING FROM THE
ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS AT
THE MOMENT, WHICH I FIND
TO BE A LITTLE BIT OF A SHAME.
EVERYTHING IS NEGATIVE.
AND I THINK THE CONSUMER
AND THE PUBLIC AT LARGE IS
BECOMING A LITTLE BIT
FED UP OF READING ALL
THE NEGATIVE APPROACHES.
AND I THINK, AGAIN, I COME
BACK TO THIS THEORY WE HAVE
TO BRING IN STRONG AND
RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP,
POSITIVE LEADERSHIP TO SHOW
IT'S NOT ALL NEGATIVE.
IT DOESN'T NEED
TO BE NEGATIVE.
IT CAN BE VERY, VERY
POSITIVE, FOR BOTH THE
CONSUMER AND THE
CANADIAN ECONOMY.

Stephen appears on screen. He’s in his forties; has gray hair and is clean-shaven. A caption below him reads “Stephen Carpenter, Enermodal Engineering Limited.”

He says I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT
WE KEEP THE ENVIRONMENT
IN THE FOCUS OF
THE PUBLIC EYE.
THOSE OF US WHO HAVE BEEN
THROUGH THE ENERGY CRISIS HAVE
SEEN WHEN THE ENERGY CRISIS
WAS ON THE DAILY NEWS,
PEOPLE WENT OUT
AND DID THINGS.
AND AS SOON AS IT WASN'T ON
THE NEWS, PEOPLE BASICALLY
WENT BACK TO THEIR OLD
WAYS OF USING MORE ENERGY.

Tom appears on screen. He’s in his fifties; has receding blond hair and wears a trimmed beard and glasses. A caption below him reads “Tom Lyons, C.I.D.A Global Education Project.”

He says I THINK THE MEDIA IS
ONSIDE FOR THE FIRST TIME.
I WAS LOOKING THROUGH MY
BASEMENT THROUGH OLD MAGAZINES
AND I CAME ACROSS
THE
RAVAGED PLANET,
WHICH WAS A
NEWSWEEK
MAGAZINE FOR 1970.
IT WAS OUT THERE AND
ISOLATED ON ITS OWN.
TIME MAGAZINE
HAVE PROBABLY
DONE THE SAME THING.
MACLEANS
HAVE
DONE THE SAME THING.
NOW THEY ARE ALL ONSIDE.
YOU CANNOT PICK UP A SINGLE
JOURNAL, OR A SINGLE MAGAZINE
WITHOUT SOME KIND OF
ENVIRONMENTAL REFERENCE.
I THINK, TOO, THE REASON THE
ENVIRONMENT IS SO IMPORTANT IS
THAT IT'S FOCUSED US
TO THINK GLOBALLY.
AND I THINK PEOPLE ARE
STARTING TO PERCEIVE
THEMSELVES AS PERHAPS
ALONE IN THIS UNIVERSE,
AND THIS IS THE HOME PLANET,
AND THAT WE CAN'T DESTROY IT.
SO I THINK YOU'VE GOT THE
ENVIRONMENT ONSIDE, AND A
GENERAL CONCERN, A
GENERAL CONSENSUS.

Monte appears on screen. He’s in his forties; has straight brown hair and is clean-shaven. A caption below him reads “Monte Hummel, World Wildlife Fund.”

He says I THINK PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED
IN THE ENVIRONMENT BECAUSE THEY
HAVE VISIBLE EVIDENCE OF
DETERIORATION ALL AROUND THEM.
IT'S IN THEIR FOOD, IT'S IN
THEIR LUNGS, IT'S IN THEIR
DRINKING WATER.
AS I TRAVEL ACROSS CANADA, AND
I DO A LOT, AND I SPEAK ON A
LOT OF TALK SHOWS, I TALK
WITH A LOT OF CANADIANS EVERY
YEAR, THERE ISN'T A SINGLE
CANADIAN WHO CAN'T REMEMBER
A PLACE THAT HE OR SHE USED
TO GO TO THAT HASN'T BEEN
WRECKED IN SOME WAY.
AND WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THAT,
THAT THAT DYNAMIC IS ACTIVE
IN THE MIND OF EVERY CANADIAN,
THAT'S PRETTY POWERFUL.
AND THERE'S ALSO A SENSE OF
OUTRAGE, OR A SENSE THAT
THAT JUST ISN'T RIGHT.
YOU KNOW, A SOCIETY THAT IS
TAKING US IN THAT DIRECTION
HAS GOT TO REORIENT.

Joanna appears on screen. She has short wavy brown hair and wears a striped gray and black sweater.
A caption below her reads “Joanna Kidd, LURA Group.”

She says I THINK PEOPLE EVERYWHERE
ARE WAKING UP AND STARTING
TO TALK ABOUT IT.
WHY DON'T WE HAVE A
RECYCLING PROGRAM?
WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH
SPRAYING YOUR LAWN,
AND ALL THESE
KIND OF THINGS.
SO PEOPLE ARE TALKING TO EACH
OTHER, AND THAT'S A GOOD MODE
OF COMMUNICATION, I SUPPOSE.

Tyler appears on screen. He has short blond hair and is clean-shaven. He wears a suit, brown tie and white shirt. A caption below him reads “Tyler Norris, The Windstar Foundation.”

He says PEOPLE ARE A BIT MOTIVATED
BY FEAR TO KNOW A LITTLE BIT
MORE ABOUT WHAT'S GOING
ON WITH THE ENVIRONMENT.
I PERSONALLY DON'T
THINK THAT IT'S A FAD.
I THINK OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH
OUR ENVIRONMENT HAS ALWAYS
EXISTED, AND RIGHT NOW IT'S
JUST REACHED A PROPORTION
WHERE WE CAN NO LONGER IGNORE
THE RELATIONSHIP WE ALREADY
HAVE WITH THE ENVIRONMENT.
SO I THINK IT'S SOMETHING THAT
JUST AS THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER
MOVEMENTS IN HISTORY, AS WE
BEGAN TO INCLUDE MINORITY
POPULATIONS INTO SOCIETY, AND
WOMEN'S ISSUES, AND JUST AS
WE FACED IN THE UNITED STATES
ISSUES AROUND THE VIETNAM
WAR, THAT SOCIETY ACTUALLY
MOVED TO TAKE MORE OF AN
INCLUSION OF THESE ISSUES
IN OUR EVERYDAY LIFE.
AND I THINK THE ENVIRONMENT
WILL BE THAT, TOO, TO WHERE
WE'LL MOVE BACK TO POSSIBLY
WHERE WE WERE EARLIER,
IN HISTORY, WHERE PEOPLE
JUST ASSUMED AND TOOK
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR
RELATIONSHIP WITH THE
ENVIRONMENT AS A PART OF THEIR
LIFE, INSTEAD OF A DISPOSABLE
SOCIETY WHERE IF YOU THROW
SOMETHING AWAY, THERE'S AN
ASSUMPTION THAT
IT'S GONE ELSEWHERE.
AND WE'VE HIDDEN FROM THE
REALITY THAT THAT'S NOT TRUE
FOR A FEW DECADES.

Ben appears on screen. He’s in his early thirties; has short brown hair and is clean-shaven. He wears large glasses and a suit and tie. A caption below him reads “Ben Benninger, Marsland Centre, Waterloo.”

He says I DON'T BELIEVE THAT WE CAN,
IN FACT, PROVIDE TOO MUCH
INFORMATION TO THE PUBLIC
ON THE ENVIRONMENT.
I FURTHER DON'T BELIEVE THAT
THE PUBLIC IS GOING TO BE
TURNED OFF
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES.
GRANTED, THEY MAY HEAR A LOT,
A LOT ABOUT WATER ISSUES, FOR
EXAMPLE, HOWEVER, IN GOING
TO THE TAP, AND IF THE WATER
ISN'T THERE, OR THE WATER
QUALITY THEY EXPECT ISN'T
THERE, THEN CERTAINLY THEY
ARE GOING TO BE BACK
ON THE BANDWAGON.

Tracy appears on screen. She has short brown hair and wears a dark sweater. A caption below her reads “Tracy Patterson, Ontario Waste Management Corporation.”

She says THE PROBLEMS AREN'T
GOING TO GO AWAY.
THEY'LL KEEP REAPPEARING.
AND I THINK WE'RE MORE AWARE
OF THEM NOW THAN EVER BECAUSE
WE ARE SEEING THE EFFECTS.
WE'RE SEEING IT IN OUR
LAKES AND OUR RIVERS.
WE'RE SEEING THE SMOG OVER OUR
CITIES THAT DOESN'T DISAPPEAR.
WE'RE HEARING ABOUT POLLUTION
INDEXES AND TOLD NEVER TO GO
OUT OF THE HOUSE INTO THE
SUN WITHOUT SUNSCREEN ON.
AND I THINK BECAUSE OF THINGS
LIKE THAT INDIVIDUALS WILL
ALWAYS BE CONCERNED AND AWARE.

An image of the sun shining appears on a black slate. A caption below it reads “For more information write to Canadian Earth Energy Association, 228 Barlow Crescent Dunrobia, Ontario K.O.A.1.T.O.”

The caption changes to “For more information write to “World Wildlife Fund 60 Saint Clair Avenue, E Suite 201, Toronto, Ontario M.4.T.1.N.5.”
