(music plays)

Outside a diner, a man reads the paper, another man juggles and a magician plays tricks. The name “The science Café” appears in neon lights on one of the windows. Inside, the waitress shows a menu that reads “The Science Café proudly offers food for thought. Science demonstration from Ontario Science Centre. Back in circulation. Presented by Cathie Spencer. Producer and director: Michael Kushner. Researcher: Lisa-Ann Dunley.”

A caption reads “Cathie Spencer. Ontario Science Centre.”

Cathie stands next to an anatomical model. She’s in her thirties, with mid-length curly brown hair with bangs. She wears blue circle skirt, a blue T-shirt and a belt.

She says HUMAN BEINGS ARE
CONSTANTLY PUTTING AIR,
FOOD AND WATER
INTO THEIR BODIES.
BUT, NONE OF THAT STUFF
IS GOING TO DO ANY GOOD
UNLESS YOU HAVE A WAY
TO MOVE IT AROUND
TO EVERY PART OF
YOUR BODY.
AND THAT'S THE
JOB OF YOUR HEART
AND YOUR
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM.
YOUR HEART, CONTRARY
TO POPULAR OPINION,
IS NOT LOCATED ON THE
LEFT SIDE OF YOUR BODY.
IT'S ACTUALLY LOCATED IN
THE CENTRE OF YOUR BODY,
BUT IT'S TIPPED OVER A
LITTLE BIT TO THE LEFT.
AND WE CAN TAKE A LOOK
AT THE HEART HERE.
AND YOU CAN SEE EXACTLY
WHERE IT'S SITUATED.
YOUR HEART IS ABOUT THE
SAME SIZE AS YOUR FIST.
THIS PART OF THE HEART
IS CALLED THE APEX
AND WHEN A DOCTOR
LISTENS TO YOUR HEART,
THAT'S THE BEST
HEART SOUND TO HEAR.

She removes the lungs from the model to expose the heart.

She say SO, THAT'S WHY IT SEEMS
THAT HE'S ALWAYS LISTENING
ON THE LEFT SIDE
OF YOUR BODY.
NOW, YOUR HEART
IS ACTUALLY DOING
AN INCREDIBLE JOB.
YOU HAVE TWO
UPPER CHAMBERS,
WHICH ARE CALLED ATRIA,
AND TWO LOWER CHAMBERS
WHICH ARE CALLED
VENTRICLES.
WHAT HAPPENS IS, AS
I'M STANDING HERE,
MY BODY IS USING ENERGY
AND THAT BLOOD PICKS UP
THE GARBAGE FROM THE
ENERGY PRODUCTION
AND IT BRINGS IT INTO THE
RIGHT SIDE OF THE HEART.
THEN, IT GOES INTO
THE LOWER PART,
YOUR HEART SQUEEZES AND
IT SENDS ALL THAT BLOOD
INTO THE LUNGS.
INSIDE YOUR LUNGS, YOUR
BLOOD PICKS UP MORE OXYGEN
AND IT DROPS OFF
THE CARBON DIOXIDE
IT DOESN'T WANT.
THAT BLOOD COMES BACK INTO
THE LEFT SIDE OF YOUR HEART,
LOWER LEFT SIDE SQUEEZES
AGAIN AND IT SENDS
ALL THAT OXYGEN-RICH BLOOD
TO THE REST OF YOUR BODY.
NOW, THIS SYSTEM HERE
WORKS REALLY WELL BUT
YOU DON'T WANT YOUR
BLOOD TO FLOW BACKWARDS.

An animation shows the process of blood circulation.

She continues SO, IN-BETWEEN
THE CHAMBERS,
WE HAVE VALVES AND THOSE
VALVES ARE LIKE LITTLE DOORS;
THEY ALLOW THE BLOOD TO
GO THROUGH AND THEN
THEY SLAM SHUT BEHIND
THE BLOOD SO THAT
YOUR BLOOD DOESN'T
GO THE WRONG WAY.
NOW, IT'S KIND OF NEAT
BECAUSE YOU CAN ACTUALLY
LISTEN TO THESE
CHAMBERS WORKING.
A DOCTOR WILL
LISTEN TO THEM
WHEN HE USES A
STETHOSCOPE.
WHAT I'M GOING TO USE
IS SOMETHING CALLED
A CARDIO TONE AND
WHAT IT'LL DO,
IS IT'S GOING TO ALLOW ME
TO LISTEN TO THOSE VALVES
SLAMMING SHUT
BEHIND THE BLOOD.

She uses a device similar to a stethoscope but with the chest piece attached to a large speaker-like box.

She says THE HEART SOUND, NORMALLY,
IS CALLED LUB-DUB,
LUB-DUB, LUB-DUB AND IF
YOU LISTEN CAREFULLY,
YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO
HEAR THOSE TWO SOUNDS.

(Heart beating sounds)

She says BUMP, BUMP, BUMP.
MAYBE A LITTLE FAST,
BUT IT'S STILL
A HEALTHY HEART.
NOW, THAT'S THE
SOUND OF MY HEART
WHEN I'M NOT
DOING VERY MUCH,
BUT IF I WERE GOING
TO EXERCISE,
THEN THAT SOUND WOULD
BE EVEN STRONGER
AND IT WOULD BE FASTER.
BECAUSE WHEN YOU
EXERCISE, YOU'RE PUTTING
AN EXTRA STRAIN
ON YOUR BODY.
YOUR HEART IS A MUSCLE AND
LIKE ANY OTHER MUSCLE
IN YOUR BODY, IT
NEEDS EXERCISE.
IF I DON'T EXERCISE,
MY LEG MUSCLES,
MY ARM MUSCLES, THEY GET
WEAK, THEY GET FLABBY.
SAME THING WITH
YOUR HEART,
YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE
THAT YOU KEEP IT
NICE AND HEALTHY.
EATING GOOD
FOOD, GOOD AIR,
WATER IS ALSO
VERY IMPORTANT.
BUT THAT HAS TO BE
COMBINED WITH SOMETHING
ELSE AND THAT
IS EXERCISE.
