Transcript: Heartbeat - Who's Sorry Now | Oct 15, 2021

(Cheery music plays)

A train travels down a track. A police car travels down a road.

Over a large field, clouds pass through a blue sky.

A person sings, HEARTBEAT.
WHY DO YOU MISS
WHEN MY BABY KISSES ME?
HEARTBEAT
WHY DOES A LOVE KISS
STAY IN MY MEMORY?

Goats wander near a bench. Text reads, who’s sorry now, by Candy Denman. A woman with her hair tied back searches through a cupboard in the doctor’s office. A blond woman walks in.

Jenny asks, WHAT ON EARTH DO YOU THINK
YOU'RE DOING?

Jenny looks mad. The woman with her hair tied back looks surprised.

She says, JUST HAVING A LOOK AT
WHAT'S, YOU MUST BE JENNY.
I'VE HEARD SO MUCH…

Jenny says, YOU CAN'T DO THAT.

Jenny reaches past the woman.

She says, ONLY DR. MERRICK AND MYSELF
ARE ALLOWED IN THAT CUPBOARD.

Jenny closes the cupboard.

She says, AND HOW DID YOU GET THE KEYS?

The woman looks taken aback.

She says, I’M SORRY.
WE SEEM TO HAVE GOT OFF ONTO
THE WRONG FOOT.
I'M HELEN TRENT,
DR. MERRICK'S REPLACEMENT.

Jenny asks, WHERE IS SHE?
WHAT'S HAPPENED?

Jenny looks worried.

Dr. Trent says, NOTHING.
SHE'S JUST MEETING A FRIEND
BEFORE SURGERY STARTS.

Jenny says, AND YOU'RE CHECKING UP ON ME.

Dr. Trent says, NO.
I JUST WANTED TO SEE WHAT YOU
HAD IN STOCK.

Jenny says, YOU'LL NOT FIND ANYTHING
WRONG WITH THE DRUG CUPBOARDS.

Dr. Trent says, I'M SURE I WON'T.

Jenny says, HAVE EVERYTHING EXACTLY
WHERE I WANT THEM, SO I CAN PUT
MY HAND ON THEM STRAIGHT AWAY.
IT'S VERY IMPORTANT.

Jenny opens the cupboard again. Elsewhere, Bernie and Rosie look in an engine of a car.

Bernie says, WELL, IT'LL TAKE A WHILE TO
GET THE PARTS, MR. TRENT.

Mr. Trent says, I'M JUST AMAZED IT GOT US UP
HERE.

Mr. Trent has short brown hair. He wears a brown jacket.

He says, I SHOULD NEVER HAVE LET HELEN
TALK ME INTO BRINGING HER
CAR UP FIRST.

Bernie says, IT COULD DO WITH A BIT OF A
GOING OVER.

Mr. Trent says, YEAH, WELL, I'M NOT PICKING
UP THE JAG FROM LONDON FOR A
COUPLE OF DAYS.
I'VE ARRANGED TO VIEW SOME
PROPERTIES THIS MORNING.
I'M GOING TO NEED TRANSPORT.

Vernon joins Bernie and Mr. Trent. David follows a few steps behind.

Vernon says, NOT A PROBLEM.

Mr. Trent turns towards Vernon.

Mr. Trent says, I BEG YOUR PARDON.

Vernon says, VERNON SCRIPPS.

Vernon shakes hands with Mr. Trent.

He says, PROPRIETOR
OF SCRIPPS EXECUTIVE CARS.
THIS IS ONE OF MY DRIVERS,
DAVID.

David removes his hat and nods.

Vernon says, IT JUST SO HAPPENS THAT WE HAVE
A CAR FREE AT THE MOMENT, AND
AND I'D BE DELIGHTED TO RUN YOU
'ROUND THE HOUSES, SHOW YOU SOME
OF THE AREA AT THE SAME TIME.

Mr. Trent turns around. He faces a car.

Mr. Trent says, WHAT A SPLENDID IDEA.
I WAS ODDS ON TO HAVE GOT LOST
ANYWAY.
AND UH, THERE'S NOTHING LIKE A BIT
OF LOCAL KNOWLEDGE, IS THERE,
MR. SCRIPPS?

Vernon laughs. Elsewhere, Sergeant Dennis Merton and Dr. Liz Merrick sit across from each other at a table.

Dennis says, I COULDN'T SPEAK TO YOU
AT THE SURGERY, NOT THE WAY
JENNY'S BEEN LATELY.

Liz says, YOU'RE STILL WORRIED ABOUT
HER?

Dennis says, SHE CAN'T KEEP STILL.
SHE TALKS NON-STOP ONE MOMENT
AND THEN SHE WON'T SPEAK AT ALL.
SHE HARDLY SLEEPS.

Liz says, SHE'S BEEN UNDER A LOT OF
STRAIN.

Dennis says, THIS IS MORE THAN JUST
NERVES, LIZ.

Dennis shakes his head.

He says, SHE'S SPENDING MONEY LIKE
THERE'S NO TOMORROW.

Liz says, AH.

She puts down a tea cup.

Dennis says, WELL, I WOULDN'T MIND IF SHE
WAS BUYING THINGS SHE ACTUALLY
NEEDS, BUT SHE BOUGHT TWO PAIRS
OF SHOES FOR YOUR WEDDING, THEN
DECIDED NEITHER OF THEM WAS
RIGHT AND JUST THREW THEM IN THE
BIN.

Liz says, WE'VE ALL BOUGHT THINGS WE
REGRET, DENNIS.
LOOK, I'LL HAVE A CHAT WITH
HER, BUT MAYBE WHEN THE
WEDDING'S OVER AND DR.
TRENT HAS SETTLED IN, YOU SHOULD
THINK ABOUT A HOLIDAY.
TAKE HER AWAY SOMEWHERE RESTFUL.
BIT OF SUN AND SEA AIR WILL DO
THE WORLD OF GOOD.
I REALLY SHOULD HEAD BACK TO
SURGERY.
BUT, SHE'LL BE FINE, DENNIS,
DON'T WORRY.

Liz stands and leaves. Dennis looks worried.

(Coughing)

At the doctor’s office, Jenny sits on the floor.

She says to herself, HERE WE ARE.
OKAY.

People sit in a waiting area. A young man in a white shirt stands and walks towards Jenny. On the floor, Jenny sits with a collection of bottles. She runs her finger down a list in an open book

Jenny says to herself, NOW,
I THOUGHT I HAD TWO OF THOSE.

Jenny looks worried. She reaches up for a bottle resting on an open double Dutch door where the young man in the white shirt looks down at Jenny. He puts his fist up to his mouth and clears his throat. Jenny ignores him.

The young man says, EXCUSE ME.

Jenny says, I'M BUSY.

The man says, I’M HERE FOR MY APPOINTMENT,
JEFF LLOYD, 11:30.

Jenny says, JUST SIT DOWN, MR. LLOYD.
THE DOCTOR WILL SEE YOU IN A
MINUTE.

Jeff sighs and walks away. Jenny returns to her organizing.

Dr. Merrick says, TAKE ONE THREE TIMES A DAY.

In an office, Dr. Merrick sits at a desk facing Jeff. Dr. Trent leans against a window sill behind her.

Dr. Merrick says, IF YOU GIVE THE PRESCRIPTION TO
JENNY, SHE'LL GET YOU THE PILLS.
OKAY?

Jeff takes a prescription from Dr. Merrick. He stands and leaves. Dr. Merrick puts a paper in an envelope. Dr. Trent follows Jeff through the office.

Dr. Trent says, LAST ONE, THANK GOODNESS.

She closes the office door.

Dr. Trent says, STRANGE TIME TO CHOOSE TO
RE-ORGANIZE THE DRUG CABINET.

Dr. Merrick faces Dr. Trent.

Dr. Merrick says, TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH, I
THINK ME LEAVING HAS THROWN
JENNY.
I'LL HAVE A CHAT WITH HER WHEN
I'M FINISHED MY ROUNDS.

Dr. Merrick takes her hanging coat from the back of the door.

She asks, AND WHAT ABOUT YOU?
WILL YOU BE ALL RIGHT FOR AN
HOUR OR TWO?

Dr. Trent says, FINE.

She smiles.

Dr. Trent says, I'M GOING TO HAVE LUNCH WITH
MATTHEW, SEE HOW THE HOUSE
HUNTING IS GOING.

Dr. Merrick leaves. At the double Dutch Jeff watches Jenny

Jenny says, IT MUST BE HERE
SOMEWHERE.

Jeff asks, DO YOU WANT ME TO COME BACK
LATER?

Jenny doesn’t face Jeff.

She says, NO, JUST GIVE ME TIME.

Dr. Merrick says, I'LL DROP THEM BY WHILE I'M
DOING MY VISITS.

Jeff sighs.

He says, NO, IT'S, IT’S OKAY.
I'M, I’M NOT GOING BACK JUST YET.

Jeff glances at Jenny, who looks away.

Jeff says, I'LL COME BACK THIS AFTERNOON.

Jeff leaves. Dr. Merrick steps towards Jenny.

Dr. Merrick says, I KNOW I SAID TO DO A STOCK
CHECK FOR HELEN, BUT I DIDN'T
MEAN DURING SURGERY, JENNY.

Jenny ignores Dr. Merrick.

Dr. Merrick says, RIGHT, I'LL SEE YOU BOTH LATER.

Dr. Trent stands in the doorway to Dr. Merrick’s office. Dr. Merrick leaves. Jenny turns to face Dr. Trent. She looks angry.

Jenny says, IT WAS RATHER FORCED ON ME BY
SOMEONE MEDDLING.

Dr. Trent says, I DIDN'T MOVE ANYTHING.

(Door closing)

Dr. Trent asks, CAN I HELP?

Jenny says, I CAN MANAGE.

Dr. Trent says, I'M SURE YOU CAN.
IT'S JUST THAT IF I CAUSED THE
PROBLEM...

Jenny removes bottles from shelves in the cupboard.

She says, …RIGHT.
WELL, I'M GOING TO THE PUB TO
MEET MY HUSBAND.
PERHAPS YOU'D LIKE TO JOIN US
WHEN THIS IS DONE?

Jenny doesn’t look at Dr. Trent.

Dr. Trent says, OR NOT, YOUR CHOICE.

Dr. Trent returns to Dr. Merrick’s office. She grabs a purse and opens a door.

(Door closing)

Jenny holds a bottle from the cupboard.

She says, HERE IT IS, PENICILLIN.

Jenny opens the doubld dutch door to leave. In doing so, she knocks off bottles that were sitting on it. She runs through the office.

A person sings, SATURDAY SUN.

Jenny opens the door to the doctor’s office and runs out. She leaves the door open

The person sings, CAME EARLY ONE MORNING.

A red car drives past Jenny who holds a bottle close to her. She walks past a telephone booth. Gina steps out of a store.

She says, HI, JEN.

Jenny walks past Gina without acknowledging her.

Gina says, JEN?

The person sings, SO CLEAR AND BLUE.

Gina asks, YOU COMING OVER FOR SOME
LUNCH?

Jenny faces Gina but looks confused.

Jenny says, NO.
I WANT TO TELL HER THAT I FOUND
THE ANTIBIOTICS I WAS LOOKING
FOR.

Gina asks, WHO?

Jenny says, DR. TRENT.

Gian says, OH, IS THAT LIZ'S
REPLACEMENT?

Jenny nods.

She says, SHE INTERFERED, MESSED UP MY
SYSTEM, BUT I'VE, 'VE FOUND
THEM NOW.

Gina says, WELL, IS IT REALLY THAT
URGENT?

Jenny looks down. She shakes her head.

She says, NO.
I DON'T SUPPOSE IT IS.
I'M JUST BEING SILLY.

Jenny looks up at Gina and smiles.

Jenny says, SHE WON'T WANT TO KNOW, ANYWAY.

Gina says, WHY DON'T YOU COME OVER THE
PUB FOR A CUPPA?
GIVE ME THE LOWDOWN ON OUR NEW
DOCTOR, EH?
COME ON.

Jenny walks beside Gina. Elsewhere, Dr. Trent sits beside Mr. Trent.

Dr. Trent says, SO, NOTHING THAT'S LEAPT OUT
AND SAID "BUY ME", THEN?

Mr. Trent says, NO, OR NOT YET.

Mr. Trent looks to his right.

Vernon says, BUT WE HAVE GOT SEVERAL MORE
PLACES TO SEE THIS AFTERNOON.

Vernon sits beside Mr. Trent.

He says, I'D BETTER SORT OUT SOME LUNCH.

Vernon starts to stand

Mr. Trent says, OH, YOU MUST LET ME GET YOU
AND DAVID LUNCH, AFTER ALL THE
HELP YOU'VE GIVEN ME.

Mr. Trent stands.

Vernon says, THAT'S VERY KIND OF YOU,
MR. TRENT.

Mr. Trent says, NOT AT ALL.
AND YOU MUST CALL ME MATTHEW.
HAVE YOU DECIDED YET, DARLING?

Gina steps in with Jenny behind her.

Dr. Trent says, OH, I'LL JUST HAVE
A PLOUGHMAN'S.
AND SOME ORANGE JUICE,
PLEASE.

Matthew says, AN ORANGE JUICE, A
PLOUGHMAN'S, PLEASE, AND
WHATEVER THESE GENTS ARE HAVING.

Gina and Jenny walk past Dr. Trent at her table, and Matthew and Vernon leaning against a counter with David.

Vernon says, THAT'S GINA, THE LANDLADY.
UM, THE OTHER LADY'S JENNY MERTON,
MARRIED TO THE POLICE SERGEANT.

Matthew laughs.

He says, POINT TAKEN.
I WOULDN'T WANT TO GET ON THE
WRONG SIDE OF THE LAW, WOULD I?

(Chucking)

Dr. Trent looks annoyed. Matthew is handed a beer.

He says, THANK YOU.

Vernon says, THANKS VERY MUCH.

Matthew returns to the table beside Dr. Trent.

Dr. Trent asks, DID YOU SEE THE GIRL WHO
WALKED THROUGH AND WENT OUT THE
BACK WITH THE LANDLADY JUST NOW?

Matthew sits at the table.

He says, I SAW SOMEONE COME THROUGH.
I DIDN'T SEE WHO IT WAS.

Dr. Trent says, SHE'S MY PHARMACIST, AND
THINGS HAVE NOT GOT OFF TO
A GOOD START.

(Dramatic music plays)

Dr. Trent sips a glass of orange juice.

Matthew says, RIGHT.

Back at the Doctors office, Dr. Merrick steps through the open door. She looks worried and closes the door.

A person sings, DON'T YOU HAVE A WORD
TO SHOW WHAT MAY BE DONE?

Dr. Merrick walks through the waiting area towards the mess Jenny made.

The person sings, HAVE YOU NEVER HEARD…

Dr. Merrick calls, JENNY?
HELEN?

The person sings, …THE WAY TO FIND THE SUN?

Dr. Merrick looks around. She turns.

The person sings, TELL ME….

Back at the pub, Gina pours a cup of tea.

She says, WITH A BIT OF LUCK, THAT'LL
BE THE LAST OF THE LUNCHES, SO
WE CAN HAVE A BIT OF A NATTER.
THAT DR. TRENT'S JUST LEAVING
WITH HER HUSBAND.
I RECKON HE'S A BIT OF A LADIES
MAN.
MAYBE THAT'S WHY SHE'S BEING SO
HARD ON YOU.

Jenny says, I DON'T THINK SHE WANTS A
PHARMACIST.

Jenny holds the medication bottle.

Gina says, SHE CAN'T JUST SACK YOU,
THOUGH, CAN SHE?

Jenny says, IT'S HER PRACTICE; SHE
DOESN'T WANT ME, SHE DOESN'T
HAVE TO KEEP ME ON.

Gina says, OF COURSE SHE WANTS YOU.
YOU'RE GOOD AT YOUR JOB;
I'M SURE LIZ HAS TOLD HER.

Jenny says, IT'S ALL VERY WELL FOR LIZ,
RUNNING OFF TO AFRICA WITH BEN,
BUT I END UP LEFT HERE, AND
PROBABLY NOW WITH NO JOB.

Jenny looks upset.

Jenny says, I'VE GOTTA GET BACK.
I WAS IN SUCH A STATE, I LEFT
THE SURGERY IN A MESS.

Jenny looks worried. She runs out

Gina calls, JENNY!

At the doctor’s office, Liz, Dr. Merrick, returns bottles to the cupboard.

(Door closing)

Helen, Dr. Trent, steps into the pharmacy with Liz.

(DOOR CLOSING)

Liz looks shocked.

She says, I'M SO SORRY, HELEN.
SHE'S ISN'T NORMALLY LIKE THIS,
HONESTLY.

Helen says, SHE CAN'T BE OR YOU WOULDN'T
HAVE KEPT HER ON.

Liz puts a bottle on a shelf in the cupboard.

Liz says, THERE SEEMS TO BE SOME DRUGS
MISSING.
HERE, LOOK AT THE DDA BOOK.
IT SAYS I SHOULD HAVE TWO
BOTTLES OF NEMBUTAL AND I CAN
ONLY FIND ONE.

Helen says, HERE, LET ME HAVE A LOOK.

Helen puts down her purse and looks down on a counter.

She says, MAYBE THE BOOK'S WRONG?

Liz says, NO, I WENT THROUGH EVERYTHING
LAST WEEK.
I WANTED TO HAND THE PRACTICE
OVER TO YOU IN GOOD ORDER.

Helen says, COULD JENNY HAVE DISPOSED OF
THEM?
OUT OF DATE PERHAPS?

Liz says, NO, SHE ALWAYS EVERYTHING IN
THE BOOK AND I WITNESS THEIR
DISPOSAL.

She takes a deep breath.

Liz says, THERE'S NO WAY I COULD HAVE
PRESCRIBED THAT NUMBER SINCE
LAST WEEK.

(Page flipping)

Helen crosses her arms.

She asks, COULD JENNY HAVE A PROBLEM?

Liz asks, HOW DO YOU MEAN?

She looks up to Helen.

Liz says, OH, NO, NO, NOT JENNY.
THOUGH SHE HAS BEEN BEHAVING
RATHER STRANGELY RECENTLY.

Outside, Jenny runs through town. She carries the bottle of medication. She steps into the doctor’s office.

She calls, I WAS JUST SORTING THOSE!

Liz and Helen look up towards Jenny.

Liz says, YOU LEFT THEM OUT.

Helen says, AND THE DOOR WAS WIDE OPEN.
DO YOU ANY IDEA HOW
IRRESPONSIBLE THAT WAS?

Jenny looks angry.

She says, HOW DARE YOU!

Jenny walks toward the doctors.

Liz says, JENNY!

Jenny says, DON'T JUST STAND THERE
AND LET HER CRITICIZE ME.
YOU KNOW I'M GOOD AT MY JOB.

Liz says, THERE ARE DRUGS MISSING.

Jenny says, I DIDN'T TAKE THEM.

Liz says, NO, OF COURSE NOT, BUT--

Jenny says, IT'S HER!
SHE DOESN'T WANT ME TO STAY ON,
SO SHE'S MAKING IT UP.

Helen looks away.

Liz says, JENNY...

Jenny says, SHE'S GOT IT IN FOR ME, LIZ.
SHE SAID TO LEAVE THEM, JOIN HER
FOR LUNCH.

Liz looks away. Helen looks back at Jenny. Liz turns back to Jenny.

Liz says, JENNY, STOP THIS.
YOU ARE NOT YOURSELF AT THE
MINUTE.
WILL YOU GO HOME, PLEASE, AND
HAVE A REST?

Jenny slowly backs up. She looks nervous.

Jenny says, YOU'D RATHER BELIEVE HER THAN
ME?
FINE FRIEND YOU ARE.

Jenny turns and runs.

Liz says, JENNY!

Liz follows Jenny. She looks worried.

(Door opening)

Liz looks worried.

Elsewhere, someone picks up papers from a desk.

(Knocking)

Dennis says, COME IN.

Liz steps opens a door and steps into an office.

She says, CAN I HAVE A WORD, PLEASE,
DENNIS?

Dennis says, YES, LIZ.
I'VE BEEN GIVING A LUNCHTIME
TALK - POLICING IN THE BUSINESS
COMMUNITY.

Liz gives a slight nod but doesn’t look interested, rather, she looks worried. She steps towards Dennis.

Dennis asks, HAS SOMETHING HAPPENED?
IS IT JENNY?

Liz says, YES.
SHE WAS CERTAINLY ACTING ODDLY
WHEN I GOT BACK.
AND THEN, A LITTLE LATER, WE
ENDED UP ARGUING.

Dennis asks, IS SHE OKAY?

Liz says, SHE WENT HOME.
AT LEAST, I ASSUME SHE WENT
HOME.
SHE STORMED OFF.

Dennis says, MAYBE I SHOULD GO…

Dennis starts to leave.

Liz says, DENNIS, THERE'S MORE.
THERE ARE DRUGS MISSING.
QUITE A FEW, IN FACT.
BARBITURATES.

Dennis asks, YOU THINK JENNY'S TAKEN THEM?

Liz says, I DON'T KNOW.
THE DRUGS ARE GONE, THERE'S NO
DOUBT ABOUT THAT, BUT JENNY LEFT
THE SURGERY OPEN AND THE DRUGS
OUT; ANYONE COULD HAVE TAKEN
THEM.

Dennis says, BUT GIVEN HER RECENT
BEHAVIOUR, IT'S NOT OUT OF
THE QUESTION THAT JENNY'S TAKEN
THEM.

Liz says, WHATEVER ELSE, I HAVE TO
REPORT IT.
THE LAW SAYS I HAVE TO REPORT
THE LOSS OF ANY DANGEROUS DRUGS.

Dennis says, YES, AND YOU HAVE.

He looks frustrated.

Liz says, YOU'RE TOO CLOSELY INVOLVED.
I SHOULD REPORT IT TO SOMEONE
ELSE.

Dennis says, OH, LIZ, YOU'RE HER FRIEND.
I'M ONLY ASKING FOR ENOUGH TIME
TO TALK TO JENNY AND FIND OUT
IF SHE HAS TAKEN THEM.

Dennis pulls on a jacket.

Liz says, WHAT IF SHE HASN'T?
WHAT IF A CHILD WANDERED IN AND
TOOK THEM?

Liz looks upset.

Dennis says, YOU'VE GOT TO GIVE ME TIME,
LIZ.
IF JENNY HAS TAKEN THEM, IF SHE
HAS A PROBLEM.

Liz looks annoyed.

Liz says, LOOK, I DON'T THINK JENNY'S
BEEN TAKING DRUGS, DENNIS.
I WOULD HAVE NOTICED BEFORE.

Dennis says, LET ME TALK TO HER.
I'LL FIND THE DRUGS, I'LL GET
THEM BACK TO YOU.
THEN, MAYBE WHEN JENNY'S HAD A
HOLIDAY, LIKE YOU SUGGESTED,
SHE'LL BE OKAY AGAIN.

Dennis starts to leave.

Liz says, YOU COULD LOSE YOUR JOB
COVERING THIS UP, WE BOTH COULD.

Dennis closes his office door.

He says, I'M NOT ASKING YOU TO COVER
ANYTHING UP.
YOU'VE DONE YOUR DUTY,
YOU'VE REPORTED IT.
ONLY MY NECK IS ON THE LINE.
NOW, LET ME SORT THIS OUT,
PLEASE.

(Ringing)

Liz asks, AND WHAT IF JENNY HASN'T GOT
THEM?

Dennis says, I'M SURE SHE HAS.
IT'S THE ONLY RATIONAL
EXPLANATION.
BUT DON'T WORRY.
I'LL GET SOMEONE ELSE ONTO
CHECKING OTHER POSSIBILITIES, AS
WELL.

Liz nods.

Dennis says, AND LIZ?

Liz steps out of the office. She looks up at Dennis.

Dennis says, THANKS.

Liz briefly nods, then leaves.

(Calm music plays)

(Farm animals)

Helen says, IT'S IRONIC.
HERE WE ARE, MOVING TO THE
COUNTRY TO GET AWAY FROM THE
LONDON DRUG ADDICTS, FIND A
QUIETER, SAFER PLACE TO START
AGAIN.

Helen walks through a field with Matthew.

Matthew says, ONE INCIDENT DOESN'T MAKE IT
A HOT BED OF VICE.

Helen says, I KNOW.
IT'S JUST THAT I WANTED IT TO BE
PERFECT, A SLEEPY LITTLE
VILLAGE.

Matthew says, SO, NOW YOU'RE HAVING SECOND
THOUGHTS?

Helen says, BIT LATE FOR THAT.

Matthew says, WE CAN GO BACK TO LONDON
ANYTIME YOU LIKE.

Helen says, NOT AFTER...

Helen hesitates. Her and Matthew stop walking.

Helen says, I'D ALWAYS BE IMAGINING YOU WERE
WITH HER.

Helen looks away from Matthew.

Matthew says, I MADE YOU A PROMISE, HELEN,
AND I MEANT IT.
THAT'S ALL FINISHED.

Helen looks back at Matthew.

Matthew says, IT'S YOU I WANT TO BE WITH,
WHERE EVER YOU ARE.

Helen looks thoughtful.

Matthew says, SO, LONDON, NEW YORK, PARIS,
YORKSHIRE?

Helen smiles.

Matthew says, THE CHOICE IS YOURS.
WE JUST NEED TO LET THE ESTATE
AGENTS KNOW ABOUT THE VIEWINGS
THIS AFTERNOON.

Matthew puts his arm around Helen’s shoulder’s.

Helen says, IT IS VERY PRETTY HERE.

Matthew says, HMM.

Elsewhere, Jenny says, I MIGHT'VE KNOWN THEY'D BE
'ROUND TRYING TO SHIFT THE BLAME
ONTO ME.

Dennis says, LIZ HAS TO REPORT THE DRUGS
MISSING; SHE HAS NO CHOICE.

Jenny says, YOU THINK I STOLE THEM?

Jenny looks confronted.

Dennis says, I DON'T KNOW, THAT'S WHY I'M
ASKING.

Jenny asks, YOU HONESTLY THINK I'D DO
THAT?

Dennis says, NOT WHEN YOU'RE YOURSELF, NO.
BUT YOU HAVE TO ADMIT, YOU'VE
BEEN UNDER STRAIN LATELY.

Jenny says, I DIDN'T TAKE THEM.
IT IS NOTHING TO DO WITH ME.
LOOK, LIZ HAS MADE A MISTAKE.
THEY MUST BE AT THE SURGERY.

Dennis says, SHE SAYS NOT.

Jenny says, AND YOU'D RATHER BELIEVE HER
THAN YOUR OWN WIFE?

Dennis looks away.

Jenny says, THEY HAVE CONJURED UP THIS
STUPID STORY BETWEEN THEM, CAN'T
YOU SEE THAT?

Dennis looks up at Jenny.

Dennis says, JENNY, WHY WOULD THEY DO
THAT?

Jenny says, MAYBE HELEN TRENT TOOK THE
DRUGS, TO GIVE HER A REASON TO
GET RID OF ME, AND, AND LIZ HAS
BEEN DUPED INTO BELIEVING THAT
I'M TO BLAME.
I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY'VE GOT TO
YOU, TOO.

Jenny looks terrified.

Dennis says, TAKE IT EASY, DARLING.
I'M ONLY TRYING TO HELP.

Dennis tries to put his arms around Jenny.

Jenny says, OH BY ACCUSING ME OF THEFT?
THAT'S A FUNNY WAY OF HELPING.

Dennis says, THIS IS SILLY.

Jenny breathes heavily.

She says, MAYBE YOU'RE IN IT, TOO.
THAT'S IT, ISN'T IT?

Jenny looks panicked.

Dennis says, LOOK, JENNY, PLEASE.
YOU'RE NOT WELL!

He tries to hold Jenny’s wrists.

Dennis says, JENNY!
JENNY!

Jenny escapes Dennis’ hold. She runs to a staircase.

Dennis calls, JENNY!

Jenny runs up the staircase.

Dennis says, JENNY...

Dennis runs up the staircase after Jenny.

(Door closing)

Dennis says, JENNY?

Dennis tries to open the door, but it’s locked.

He says, JENNY, LET ME IN.

Jenny looks terrified.

Dennis pounds on the door.

He says, JENNY, OPEN THE DOOR.

Dennis sighs. He walks down the stairs. He breathes heavily and picks up a phone. At the top of the stairs, Jenny steps out of the room.

(Phone dialing)

In her office, Liz holds a phone to her ear.

She says, I'LL BE RIGHT OVER, DENNIS.
IF IT'S AS BAD AS YOU SAY,
WE MAY HAVE TO HOSPITALIZE HER.

Dennis says, HOSPITAL?
I DON'T KNOW, LIZ.
MAYBE IF YOU CAN JUST GIVE HER
SOMETHING TO HELP HER SLEEP FOR
A WHILE, THEN IT WILL BE EASIER
AND WE CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT TO
DO WITH HER.

Jenny looks worried

She whispers, DENNIS?

Jenny looks terrified. She runs back up the stairs and into the room. She slams the door closed and locks it. She stands with her back against it

Jenny says to herself, LIZ AND DENNIS.

Her hands shake.

She says, DENNIS AND LIZ.

Jenny walks towards a bed.

She says, ALL THIS TIME, I NEVER KNEW.

(Banging)

Jenny glances at the door.

Dennis says, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE
TO OPEN THE DOOR SOMETIME,
JENNY.

(Exciting music plays)

(Rattling)

Dennis says, JENNY, ARE YOU ALL RIGHT?

Jenny steps to a window in the room. She looks scared

(Clattering)

Jenny puts her hands on either side of an open window. She sticks her head out and looks at the ground below her where there is a box between two garbage cans. Jenny lowers a leg down the side of the house. She lowers her other leg and carefully starts to lower herself out the window. Jenny looks beside her, then falls out the window.

(Clattering)

From outside the bedroom, Dennis runs. Outside, Jenny carefully stands beside a garbage can that’s been knocked over. Her knees are bleeding. She runs. Dennis reaches a door as she runs past.

Dennis calls, JENNY!

Dennis manages to open the door and runs after Jenny.

(Whistle blowing)

Jenny runs up a hill.

She yells, HELP ME, PLEASE!

(Whistle blowing)

Jenny runs past different people.

She yells, STOP HIM!

(Phone ringing)

A person answers a phone.

Alf answers, ASHFORDLY POLICE STATION, CAN
I HELP…

Alf pauses.

He says, ER, RIGHT, SIR.
IN MARKET STREET.
RIGHT, WE'LL GET SOMEBODY DOWN
THERE STRAIGHT AWAY.

Alf hangs up the phone and turns behind him.

He says, PHIL?

Alf faces Phil.

Alf says, OH.
UH, THERE'S A DISTURBANCE
IN MARKET STREET.
YOU'D BEST GET DOWN THERE.

Phil puts down some papers.

Alf says, AND I'LL GET ONTO ROB AND
HE'LL GIVE YOU SOME BACK UP.

Alf starts to walk away.

Phil says, RIGHT.
THANKS, ALF.

Elsewhere, Jenny runs towards a market crowded with people.

She yells, YOU HAVE TO STOP HIM!
HELP ME!

Jenny runs through the market. Elsewhere, a red car screeches to a stop in front of Dennis. A man at the market glances in his direction. Dennis runs towards the market.

The man says, HEY, HEY, HEY, HEY, HEY!

He grabs Dennis.

Dennis says, LET GO, YOU STUPID…

Dennis throws the man off. The man stumbles, knocks over a crate of fruit and falls. A car rushes towards the market. Liz sits in the driver’s seat. She grabs a case.

(Siren)

A motorcycle drives through the market. A police car pulls up behind it. Liz rushes through the market. She reaches the man that fell. She kneels beside him.

Liz asks, ARE YOU ALL RIGHT?

The man says, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH.

A police officer climbs off the motorcycle. Another steps out of the police car. Liz holds gauze to the man’s bleeding nose. The police officer from the bike and Phil, the other officer, reach Liz and the man.

The man says, HE WENT THAT WAY.

The officers run past the man and through the market. Elsewhere, Jenny runs through an alley way. She reaches a dead end.

Dennis says, JENNY.

Dennis stops and tries to catch his breath. He puts his hands up.

He says, IT'S OKAY.
I'M NOT GONNA HURT YOU, I
PROMISE.

The other officers reach the alleyway. Jenny looks terrified.

She says, GET AWAY FROM ME, ALL OF YOU!

One of the officers says, SARGE, WHAT'S GOING ON?

Jenny sobs. At the police station, Phil walks through a door. Jenny follows him. She looks scared.

Alf asks, SARGE, WHAT'S GOING ON?

Dennis says, JENNY...

Jenny says, DON'T TOUCH ME.

Jenny steps away from Dennis when he tries to put his hand on her shoulder. Jenny looks up at Alf.

She whispers, DON'T LET HIM HURT ME AGAIN.

Alf says, ROB, WILL YOU TAKE HER INTO
THE OFFICE.

Dennis closes his eyes and looks down.

Alf says, PHIL, MAKE A CUP OF TEA.

Rob says, JENNY...

Rob leads Jenny away. Phil leaves with them. Dennis steps towards Alf.

Dennis says, I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING
TO HER.

Alf says, NO.
WELL, I'LL HAVE A CHAT
WITH HER, AND THEN WE CAN FIND
OUT WHAT'S BEST TO DO.

Dennis gives a small nod and Alf leaves. Dennis looks worried. In an office, Jenny sits in a chair. Her knees are bloody.

Alf says, ALL RIGHT, JENNY, LOVE, PHIL
WILL BRING US IN A CUP OF TEA IN
A MOMENT.

Jenny says, THEY'RE IN IT TOGETHER.
PLANNING TO HAVE ME LOCKED UP.
I NEVER SUSPECTED, NOT 'TIL
TODAY WHEN SHE ACCUSED ME OF
STEALING SOME DRUGS.

Alf glances up towards Rob.

Jenny says, DENNIS HURT ME, HE EVEN WANTED
ME SEDATED, TO MAKE IT EASIER
FOR THEM.
I WAS SO FRIGHTENED.

Jenny looks terrified.

Jenny says, I HAD TO ESCAPE, SO I, I CLIMBED
OUT OF THE WINDOW.
I'M NOT GOING TO LET THEM PUT ME
AWAY.
I KNOW WHAT THEY'RE UP TO,
YOU SEE?

Jenny looks up at Alf. Alf looks unsure.

He says, WHY DON'T WE GET THE DOCTOR
IN TO HAVE A LOOK AT YOUR CUTS
AND BRUISES?

Jenny nods.

Alf says, I'M SURE THAT LIZ…

Jenny says, NOT LIZ.
DON'T YOU SEE?
SHE'S IN IT WITH HIM.

Rob says, HOW ABOUT DOCTOR TRENT?
I'M SURE, UNDER THE
CIRCUMSTANCES, SHE WON'T MIND.

Alf says, I'LL GO AND CALL HER.

He stands to leave.

Alf says, AND ROB WILL STAY WITH YOU,
MAKE SURE YOU'RE ALL RIGHT.

Jenny says, DON'T LEAVE ME, ALF,
PLEASE.

Alf turns back to Jenny.

He says, ALL RIGHT, JENNY, LOVE.
YOU GO AND GET THE DOCTOR.

Jenny looks worried. Rob leaves. He talks on the phone.

He says, CUTS AND BRUISES, REALLY.
IT'S MORE A CASE OF HER, UM,
PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE.

Liz joins Rob.

Rob says, RIGHT, THANKS, DR. TRENT.
WE'LL SEE YOU SOON.

Rob puts down the phone.

Liz says, WAS THAT ABOUT JENNY?

The man from the market walks in with a cloth to his nose.

Liz says, CAN YOU CALL HELEN BACK AND TELL
HER NOT TO WORRY, AS I'M HERE
ALREADY.

Rob says, SHE WON'T SEE YOU, LIZ.

Liz asks, WHAT DO YOU MEAN, SHE WON'T
SEE ME?

The man from the market asks, HAVE YOU CHARGED HIM, THEN?

Dennis looks up at the man.

Rob says, SORRY, WHO?

Phil brings out a mug.

He says, THERE YOU GO, SARGE.

The man from the market says, SARGE!
OH, I SEE.
WELL, DON'T THINK I'M GOING TO
LET IT DROP.

Phil and Dennis look at the man. Phil steps towards the man.

He asks, WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT?

The man from the market says, HE MAY BE A COPPER, BUT HE
CAN'T GO AROUND ATTACKING WOMEN
AND THUMPING ANYONE WHO TRIES TO
STOP HIM.
I WANT HIM CHARGED.

Phil yells at the man.

He says, LOOK, WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW
WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT, IT'S
BEST TO KEEP QUIET, ALL RIGHT?

Dennis says, BELLAMY!
A WORD.

Dennis leaves with Phil. The man from the market watches them leave. He turns and looks back and looks at Rob and Liz. He looks disbelieving.

Phil says, I'M REALLY SORRY, SARGE.

Dennis says, I KNOW BELLAMY, BUT YOU'LL
ONLY MAKE THINGS WORSE, FOR ME,
AS WELL AS FOR YOU.

Phil says, WELL, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO
DO?

Dennis says, FIRST THING IS THAT HAVE TO
INFORM DIVISION.

Phil says, NO, SARGE.
WE CAN GET HIM TO DROP…

Dennis says, NO.
IT'S NOT JUST THAT.
DR. MERRICK REPORTED SOME DRUGS
MISSING AND I DIDN'T TAKE THE
APPROPRIATE ACTION.

Dennis looks defeated.

Phil asks, HOW DO YOU MEAN?

Dennis says, I THOUGHT JENNY MIGHT HAVE
TAKEN THEM.
SHE LEFT THE DRUG CUPBOARDS AND
THE SURGERY OPEN WHEN SHE WENT
OUT FOR LUNCH.
I SUPPOSE ANYONE COULD HAVE
WANDERED IN AND TAKEN THEM.

Phil says, RIGHT, WELL, ROB AND I CAN
FIND THEM, SARGE.

Dennis says, OH, IT'S TOO LATE.
YOU'VE GOT TO DO THINGS BY
THE BOOK.
YOU HAVE TO INFORM DIVISION
OR WE COULD BOTH END UP LOSING
OUR JOBS.

(Sad music plays)

Phil gives a slight nod. A car drives away from the police station.

Rob says, IF THERE'S ANYTHING YOU'D
LIKE TO ADD TO YOUR STATEMENT,
MR. LEWIS, JUST LET ME KNOW.

Mr. Lewis, the man from the market, says, JUST MAKE SURE HE'S CHARGED
LIKE ANY OTHER BLOKE.

Rob says, IT'S ALL IN HAND.

Mr. Lewis leaves and Rob turns away.

Gina asks, ROB, WHAT'S GOING ON?
HOW IS JENNY?
CAN I SEE HER?

Rob says, DR. TRENT'S WITH HER AT
THE MOMENT.

Gina follows Rob inside.

(Door closing)

Helen joins Phil and Alf. Alf stands and they look up at Helen.

Helen says, NOTHING MAJOR ON THE PHYSICAL
SIDE.

Helen smiles.

She says, GINA, HELLO.
LIZ SAID SHE'D CALL YOU.
WOULD YOU MIND SITTING WITH
JENNY?
I, I DON'T REALLY WANT TO LEAVE HER
ON HER OWN AT THE MOMENT.
SHE NEEDS A FRIEND.

Gina says, YEAH, OF COURSE.

She smiles and walks past Helen.

Helen says, IT'S NOT GOOD NEWS.
SHE'S CLEARLY DISTURBED, BUT I
HAVE TO SAY, HER STORY SEEMS
COHERENT ENOUGH.
WE'LL HAVE TO TAKE HER
COMPLAINTS ABOUT HER HUSBAND AND
DR. MERRICK SERIOUSLY.

Dennis joins the group. Alf and Phil look away. Alf sits down. Dennis looks worried. He sighs and looks down. Elsewhere, Gina faces Jenny and holds her hand.

Gina says, JEN, LOVE, I'M SURE IT'S ALL
GOING TO BE OKAY.

Jenny shakes her head.

Gina says, PLEASE DON'T WORRY.

Jenny says, THEY WANT TO HAVE ME PUT IN A
PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL.

Gina says, NO-ONE'S GOING TO DO THAT.

Jenny nods. Gina rubs Jenny’s arm.

Jenny says, THEY'VE BEEN PLOTTING IT FOR
AGES.
LIZ AND DENNIS HAVING THEIR
LITTLE AFFAIR AND PLOTTING TO
HAVE ME PUT AWAY.

Gina looks worried. At the door, Detective Inspector Shiner walks in. Phil and Rob stand.

Rob says, SIR.

Shiner says, PCS WALKER AND BELLAMY, THIS
IS DS RANKIN, DRUG SQUAD.
YOU'LL BOTH BE WORKING WITH
DS RANKIN ON THE STOLEN DRUGS,
WHILST I SORT OUT THE OTHER
ASPECTS.
SHALL WE GO INTO YOUR OFFICE?

Alf says, OH JENNY, ER, MRS. MERTON'S
IN THERE WITH A FRIEND, SIR.

Shiner says, WELL, THE INTERVIEW ROOM,
THEN, PERHAPS.
DON'T THINK WE NEED TO PUT YOU
IN A CELL JUST YET.

Dennis, Phil, Rob and Alf glance at one another.

(Phone ringing)

Dennis follows Shiner past DS Rankin and out of the room

The ringing stops and Alf says, ASHFORDLY POLICE STATION.
CAN I HELP YOU?

Rankin says, RIGHT.
FIRST UP, WE NEED TO SPEAK TO
THE DOCTOR, FIND OUT HER SIDE OF
THE STORY, AND THEN WE'LL SEARCH
SERGEANT MERTON'S HOUSE.

On the phone, Alf asks, DO WE KNOW WHAT THE
LAD'S TAKEN?

Rob says, HIS HOUSE?
I HARDLY THINK WE'LL FIND THE
DRUGS THERE.
SERGEANT MERTON'S ALREADY
LOOKED.

Rankin says, I'M NOT INTERESTED IN WHAT
YOU THINK.
SOME HEAVY-DUTY DRUGS HAVE GONE
MISSING...

Alf says, THANK YOU.

He hangs up the phone.

Rankin says, ...AND YOUR SERGEANT'S
MISSUS IS THE PRIME SUSPECT.

Alf says, DS RANKIN…

(Paper ripping)

Rankin says, EVEN SERGEANT MERTON BELIEVES
HIS WIFE TOOK THEM.

Alf says, UH, THAT WAS THE HOSPITAL.
THERE'S BEEN A DRUG OVERDOSE.

Alf hands DS Rankin a note.

Rankin says, SHE MUST HAVE HIDDEN THEM
SOMEWHERE.
THE SURGERY,
THE HOUSE.
SO, WE SHALL START AT THE
SURGERY.

Rankin leaves. Phil looks annoyed. Elsewhere, Dennis steps away from a window.

(Drawer opening)

He says, OF COURSE, I SHOULD HAVE MADE
AN OFFICIAL REPORT AS SOON AS I
HEARD THAT THE DRUGS WERE
MISSING.
I JUST MADE THINGS WORSE.

Shiner says, YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE ACTING
FOR THE BEST.

Dennis looks at Shiner.

Shiner says, WELL, I'M GOING TO GO AND
INTERVIEW YOUR WIFE, SEE WHAT WE
CAN SALVAGE FROM THIS.

Dennis walks back towards the window.

Shiner says, YOU WON'T OBJECT IF WE SEARCH
YOUR HOUSE?

Dennis looks at Shiner who stands near a door.

Dennis says, NO, SIR.

Shiner opens the door.

Dennis says, IF I'D ONLY REALIZED HOW
DISTURBED JENNY WAS, IF I'D GOT
HER HELP EARLIER, WE WOULDN'T
BE IN THIS MESS NOW.

Shiner raises his eyebrows and leaves. He closes the door behind him.

Rankin says, NOW, WE KNOW EXACTLY WHAT'S
MISSING, LET'S GO AND SEARCH
MERTON'S PLACE.

Outside, Rankin walks in between Rob and Phil.

Rob says, I THINK WHAT DR. MERRICK SAID
WAS RIGHT, SOMEONE CAME IN AND
STOLE THE DRUGS WHILST THE
SURGERY WAS STILL OPEN.

Rankin says, VERY CONVENIENT.

Rob asks, SHOULDN'T WE FOLLOW UP ON THE
OVERDOSE?
VISIT THE HOSPITAL?

Rankin asks, DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY
OVERDOSES THERE ARE EVERY DAY?

Rob says, THAT'S NOT THE POINT.

Rankin says, AND I'M IN CHARGE HERE,
CONSTABLE.
LET'S GO AND PICK UP YOUR
SERGEANT AND GET THIS SEARCH
OVER AND DONE WITH.

Phil says, WHAT?
SARGE HAS TO BE THERE WHILE WE
SEARCH THROUGH HIS STUFF?

Rankin says, THOSE ARE THE RULES,
PC BELLAMY.
I ASSUME YOU HAVE NO PROBLEM
WITH THAT?

Phil looks annoyed. Rob scratches his chin. Elsewhere, Jenny looks sad. Gina has her hand on Jenny’s.

Jenny says, YOU SEE, I HADN'T REALIZED
THEY WERE HAVING AN AFFAIR, LIZ,
DR. MERRICK THAT IS, AND DENNIS.

Shiner asks, WHY WOULD THEY STEAL THE
DRUGS AND TRY TO MAKE IT SEEM
LIKE YOU WERE TO BLAME?

Jenny has a sad smile.

She says, HASHFORDLY IS DENNIS'S LIFE.
THEY COULDN'T STAY HERE, NOT
WITH THE SCANDAL.
BUT IF I WERE CARTED OFF TO
HOSPITAL AND HE BECAME CLOSE TO
THE DOCTOR WHO HELPED HIM
THROUGH HIS TROUBLES, THEN...
THAT WOULD BE ALL RIGHT.

Shiner says, BUT I UNDERSTAND DR. MERRICK
IS ENGAGED TO BE MARRIED.

Jenny nods.

She says, THEY HAD TO COVER THEIR
TRACKS.
POOR BEN, SHE JUST USED HIM,
TOO.

Shiner looks disbelieving.

He says, I CAN'T SERIOUSLY BELIEVE
THAT SERGEANT MERTON WOULD GO TO
THESE LENGTHS.
HE'S ALWAYS SEEMED TO CARE FOR
YOU.

Jenny looks down.

She says, DO THESE LOOK LIKE HE CARES
FOR ME?

Jenny’s wrists are red, where Dennis held them when he tried to stop her from running off back at their house.

Jenny says, I HAD TO CLIMB OUT OF A WINDOW TO
ESCAPE HIM.
WOULD I DO THAT IF I WASN'T
SURE?

Jenny looks close to tears.

She says, LIZ AND DENNIS.
ALL THIS TIME,
MAKING A FOOL OUT OF ME AND BEN.

Jenny looks down.

Elsewhere, Rob looks behind a row of books on a shelf. Rankin lifts a pile of book, magazines and a small box onto a table. Rankin turns and faces Dennis who stands in front of cupboards.

Rankin says, EXCUSE ME, PLEASE.

Dennis takes a step to move out of the way. One of the officers searches a drawer and pulls out some flyers.

Dennis says, THAT'S OUR HONEYMOON.

Phil looks at Dennis. Dennis takes the flyers from Phil.

Dennis says, THOSE ARE THE BOOKING DETAILS.

Dennis looks sad.

He says, I DON'T QUITE KNOW WHY I KEPT
THEM.

He hands the flyers back to Phil.

Phil says, I'M REALLY SORRY, SARGE.

Rob watches Dennis and Phil.

Dennis says, AYE, YOU AND ME BOTH.
BUT IT'S GOT TO BE DONE, SO YOU
MIGHT AS WELL GET ON WITH IT.

Sad music plays.

A person sings, SHOW ME.
WHAT YOU HAVE TO SHOW.

Elsewhere, Bernie sits on a bench.

Rosie says, RIGHT I'M OFF.
NIGHT, MR. SCRIPPS.

Rosie pauses and looks at Bernie who doesn’t seem to be paying attention.

She says, HEY.

Rosie kneels beside Bernie.

She asks, ARE YOU ALL RIGHT?

Bernie says, WHAT?

He looks at Rosie.

Bernie says, OH, YES, YES.

He tries to smile.

Rosie says, YOU WERE THINKING ABOUT
JENNY, WEREN'T YOU?

Bernie says, IT'S JUST SO AWFUL.
I HAD A SOFT SPOT FOR HER ONCE.
EVER SO SILLY IT WAS.
BUT SHE WERE WONDERFUL ABOUT IT
AND NEVER MADE ME FEEL BAD OR
ANYTHING.

Rosie says, I CAN IMAGINE HER DOING THAT.
SHE'S LUCKY TO HAVE SUCH
GOOD FRIENDS.
SHE'LL NEED THEM ALL TO HELP
HER.

Rosie stands and leaves. Back the Merton house, Phil and Rob stand outside.

(Door squeaking)

Rankin says, RIGHT, SERGEANT MERTON, WE'LL
RETURN TO THE STATION.
YOU TWO CAN GO OFF DUTY.

Rankin and Dennis walk past the two officers.

Rob says, SARGE.

Phil says, HE'S MADE HIS MIND UP AND
HE'S NOT EVEN GOING TO LOOK AT
ANY OTHER POSSIBILITIES.

Rob says, WHICH LEAVES IT DOWN TO US.
I THINK WE SHOULD GO TO THE
HOSPITAL.

Phil says, COME ON, LET'S GO.

Elsewhere, Ben and Liz walk down a path together. Liz has her arm in Ben’s.

Ben says, YOU LOOK EXHAUSTED.
WHY DON'T WE GO YOU OUT FOR
DINNER, OR AT LEAST LET ME TAKE
YOU TO THE PUB FOR A DRINK?

Liz says, I COULDN'T.

Ben says, YOU DON'T THINK ANYONE
'ROUND HERE REALLY BELIEVES ALL
THAT STUFF ABOUT YOU AND DENNIS
FRAMING JENNY, DO YOU?

Liz says, OH OF COURSE NOT.
I'M SURE THEY ALL REALIZE BY NOW
THAT JENNY'S NOT VERY WELL.

Ben says, WELL, THEN, WHAT ABOUT
DINNER?

Liz says, I'D REALLY RATHER STAY IN,
BEN.
I JUST FEEL SO BAD FOR HER.

Ben says, IT'S OKAY.
I UNDERSTAND.
WELL, LET'S HOPE YOU'VE GOT A
CAST-IRON STOMACH, DR. MERRICK,
I'M TAKING YOU BACK TO MY PLACE
FOR SOME NORTON CLASS CUISINE.

Liz laughs. Elsewhere, Dennis sits, looking down.

(Knocking)

Dennis looks up.

Alf faces Dennis who sits at his desk.

Alf says, I WAS THINKING, SARGE, UH, WITH
JENNY AND GINA AT YOUR
PLACE, WELL, I'VE GOT A SPARE
ROOM AT MY HOUSE.
AND I’M UM, I'M SURE THAT MRS. VENTRESS
WOULDN'T OBJECT.

Dennis looks down and smiles.

He says, THAT'S KIND OF YOU, VEN…

Dennis takes a deep breath.

He says, ALF, BUT I'VE ARRANGED A ROOM
AT THE PUB.

Alf says, OH, ALL RIGHT, THEN.
I'LL BE OFF.

Alf passes Shiner in the door way to Dennis’ office. He sits in a chair across from Dennis. Dennis opens a drawer in his desk and pulls out a bottle that he places on his desk.

Shiner says, I'M SURE WE COULD
BOTH DO WITH ONE.

Dennis pulls out two glasses from his desk drawer and unscrews the cap from the bottle.

Dennis asks, WHAT'S THE SITUATION?

Shiner says, SHE SAYS YOU ASSAULTED HER,
IMPRISONED HER, FRAMED HER WITH
THE DRUGS TO HAVE HER PUT AWAY.

Dennis looks surprised.

He says, WELL, THAT'S JUST RIDICULOUS.

Shiner says, SHE DOES HAVE BRUISES.
SHE DID CLIMB OUT OF THE WINDOW
TO GET AWAY FROM YOU,
THAT'S PRETTY DESPERATE.

Dennis says, I WOULD NEVER HURT JENNY.

Shiner says, IT'S HER WORD AGAINST YOURS.
AND YOU ADMIT YOU CONCEALED
THE DRUG THEFT.

Dennis says, I WAS JUST BUYING TIME.

Shiner says, THEN, THERE'S MR. LEWIS,
YOU ASSAULTED HIM.
THERE WERE WITNESSES.

Dennis says, I WANTED TO GET TO JENNY
BEFORE SHE DID HERSELF AN
INJURY.
HE JUST GOT IN THE WAY;
IT WAS AN ACCIDENT.
WHAT A MESS.

Dennis looks into his glass.

Shiner says, I'M AFRAID I HAVE NO CHOICE,
DENNIS.

Shiner puts his hand out. Dennis sighs and puts down his glass. He reaches into his jacket and pulls out a card. He hands the card to Shiner. Text on the card reads, warrant card.

Shiner says, YOU'LL GET IT BACK WHEN THIS
IS SORTED OUT.

Dennis says, IF IT GETS SORTED OUT.

Dennis holds up his glass. Elsewhere, a nurse has her back on a blond woman

The nurse says, HE'LL SEE YOU SOON.

Rob calls, LISA?
LISA BURROWS?

The blond woman, Lisa, stops walking.

Rob says, WHY DON'T YOU SIT DOWN AND
TELL US WHAT HAPPENED?

Lisa says, I'VE GOT TO GET HOME.

Phil stands from a seat against a wall.

Lisa says, I TOLD MUM I'D BE BACK BY TEN
AT THE LATEST.

Phil says, WELL, WE CAN GIVE YOU A LIFT
BACK.
COME ON, WHY DON'T TELL US WHAT
HAPPENED?

Lisa says, OKAY.

Lisa sits. She looks sad.

Lisa says, TERRY'S BEEN WORRYING ABOUT
HIS EXAMS, RIGHT?
NOT SLEEPING VERY WELL, AND A
FRIEND SAID THAT HE HAD SOME
SLEEPING TABLETS FROM THE
DOCTOR, AND HE OFFERED TO SELL
TERRY A COUPLE.

Phil and Rob sit near Lisa. Phil uncrosses his arms.

He asks, WHO'S THE FRIEND?

Lisa says, I DON'T WANT TO GET HIM IN
TROUBLE OR ANYTHING.

Rob says, HE DIDN'T TELL TERRY NOT TO
TAKE MORE THAN ONE OR TWO,
THOUGH, DID HE?

Lisa shakes her head.

She says, TERRY MUST'VE JUST GOT
CONFUSED, FORGOTTEN THAT HE'D
ALREADY HAD SOME.

Phil says, AND HE WASN'T TOLD NOT TO
TAKE THEM WITH ALCOHOL.

Rob says, YOUR BOYFRIEND NEARLY DIED.

Lisa looks down.

Rob says, THE NEXT PERSON MIGHT NOT BE SO
LUCKY, UNLESS WE GET THOSE PILLS
BACK.

Lisa nods.

Lisa says, IT WAS JEFF.
HE'S IN THE SIXTH FORM.
JEFF LLOYD.

Phil and Rob nod. Phil looks at Rob.

Lisa says, I'D BETTER TELL THE OTHERS, TOO,
IF THESE PILLS ARE AS DANGEROUS
AS YOU SAY.

Elsewhere, Jenny paces. Gina sits on a couch.

Gina says, JENNY LOVE, WILL YOU SIT
DOWN?

Jenny says, YOU SEE IT, DON'T YOU?
THEY'RE ALL IN IT.

Jenny looks agitated.

Gina asks, ALL IN WHAT?

She looks confused.

Jenny says, I JUST WISH I COULD THINK
STRAIGHT, THEN I COULD STOP
THEM.

Jenny puts her hands on her head.

Gina says, LOOK, HOW 'BOUT I MAKE YOU
SOMETHING TO EAT, EH?
OR A NICE CUP OF TEA.

Jenny glares at Gina.

Jenny says, I TOLD YOU, I'M NOT HUNGRY.

Gina looks at Jenny.

Jenny asks, WHY ARE YOU HERE?
DID THEY SEND YOU?

Gina looks confused.

She says, I'M HERE BECAUSE I'M YOUR
FRIEND, JEN.

Jenny looks away. She looks sad. Jenny sits on the couch beside Gina. Gina puts her hand on Jenny’s back.

Jenny says, I DON'T KNOW WHO TO TRUST
ANYMORE.

Jenny looks devastated.

She says, I DON'T KNOW WHO'S ON MY SIDE.

Gina rubs Jenny’s back.

Jenny says, OH, GINA, I'M SO FRIGHTENED.

Gina says, I KNOW.
IT MUST BE AWFUL FOR YOU, JEN,
BUT I'M HERE FOR YOU.
YOU'VE GOT TO TRUST ME.

Jenny says, PROMISE ME YOU WON'T LET THEM
PUT ME AWAY, PROMISE ME.

Gina says, I PROMISE.

Gina tucks Jenny’s hair behind her ear.

Gina says, I'M GOING TO LOOK AFTER YOU,
RIGHT?
DON'T WORRY, YEAH?

Elsewhere, Rob searches a room. A man wears a yellow cardigan.

The man says, YOU'VE GOT NO RIGHT TO JUST
BARGE IN HERE AND GO THROUGH ALL
MY SON'S THINGS!

Rob says, ONE LAD'S IN HOSPITAL WITH A
DRUG OVERDOSE; WE'RE TRYING TO
STOP ANY OTHERS FROM LANDING IN
THERE, AS WELL.

The man says, IT'S GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH
JEFFREY.

Phil says, WE THINK JEFFREY MIGHT HAVE
STOLEN SOME DRUGS FROM THE
DOCTORS' SURGERY THIS MORNING.

The man says, THAT'S RIDICULOUS.
JEFFREY, TELL THE CONSTABLE
YOU DID NO SUCH THING.

Jeffery, the young man from the doctor’s office earlier that day, looks nervous.

He says, ERM...

The man says, THAT OTHER LAD, THE ONE WHO
TOOK THE OVERDOSE, HE PROBABLY
STOLE THEM.
TELL THEM, JEFFREY.

Phil asks, WHAT'S THIS THEN?

Phil holds up a bottle.

Phil says, EH?

Phil shakes the bottle.

(Pills clanging)

The man looks at Jeffery.

The man says, JEFFREY?

Jeffery looks away. In the interview room at the police station, Jeffery sits at a table. His father stands behind him with his hand on Jeffery’s shoulder. DI Shiner walks in. He places the bottle of pills in front of Jeffery. Jeffery looks worried.

Jeffery’s father says, I'VE TOLD HIM TO TELL YOU
EVERYTHING, MAKE A CLEAN
BREAST OF IT.
IT'S THE ONLY THING TO DO UNDER
THE CIRCUMSTANCES.’

Rankin and Rob sit across from Jeffery and his father.

Rankin says, VERY WISE, MR. LLOYD.

Mr. Lloyd sits beside his son.

Rankin says, SO, YOU ADMIT THAT YOU STOLE
THE DRUGS?

Jeffery says, I HAD TO GO BACK TO THE
SURGERY TO COLLECT MY
ANTIBIOTICS.
THE DOOR WAS OPEN, THERE WERE
ALL THESE BOTTLES JUST LYING
THERE.

Rankin asks, HOW DID YOU DECIDE WHICH ONES
TO TAKE?

Jeffery says, I RECOGNIZED SOME NAMES.
NEMBUTAL.

He glances at his father.

Jeffery says, I KNOW THAT'S A
DOWNER.

Rankin says, SO, YOU TOOK THE DRUGS TO SCHOOL
AND THEN YOU FLOGGED THEM TO
YOUR MATES.

Jeffery says, A FEW, YES.

Rob asks, WHO TO, JEFF?

Jeff looks hesitant.

Rob says, WE NEED TO KNOW, TO BE SURE
THAT NO ONE ELSE ENDS UP IN
HOSPITAL, OR WORSE.

Rob stares at Jeff.

He says, NAMES AND ADDRESSES, IF YOU
KNOW THEM.

Rob pulls out a note pad and places it before Jeff. Jeff takes a deep breath, opens the note pad and reaches for a pen.

Rob says, PC BELLAMY AND I CAN GO 'ROUND,
UH, MAKE SURE THEY'RE ALL OKAY AND
GET ANY PILLS BACK THAT WE CAN.
MINIMIZE THE DAMAGE.

Jeff writes in the notepad. Rankin leans forward.

Rankin says, YOUR SON HAS BEEN A VERY
SILLY BOY, MR. LLOYD.

Mr. Lloyd asks, WILL HE BE CHARGED?

Rankin nods.

He says, THEFT, OFFENCES UNDER THE
DANGEROUS DRUGS LEGISLATION.

Mr. Lloyd says, IF YOU GET ALL THE PILLS
BACK, COULDN'T YOU DROP IT?
I'M SURE HE'LL NEVER DO ANYTHING
LIKE THIS AGAIN.

Rankin says, I HAVE NO CHOICE, MR. LLOYD.
HE HAS TO BE CHARGED.
DRUG DEALING IS A SERIOUS
MATTER.

Mr. Lloyd says, HE WAS GOING TO GO TO
UNIVERSITY, TO STUDY LAW.

Rankin says, WELL, PERHAPS HE SHOULD HAVE
CONSIDERED THAT.

Jeff looks embarrassed and disappointed. Rankin picks up and notepad.

Rankin says, HMM, THAT'S QUITE A LIST.
YOU'LL HAVE YOUR WORK CUT OUT.
YOU BEST GET STARTED.

Rob says, THANKS, SARGE.

Jeff glances at his father.

(Door opening and closing)

At the pub, Dennis sits at the bar with Oscar Blaketon as bartender.

Dennis says, I KEEP LOOKING BACK,
THINKING, WAS IT SOMETHING I
DID, SOMETHING I SAID.

Oscar says, THERE'S NO POINT LOOKING FOR
REASONS.

Dennis says, I HAVE TO TRY AND MAKE SOME
SORT OF SENSE OUT OF IT.

Oscar says, MAYBE THERE IS NO SENSE.

Dennis says, WELL, THEN, THERE'S NOTHING I
CAN DO TO CHANGE IT, TO HELP
JENNY.

Oscar says, OF COURSE THERE IS.
YOU CAN BE THERE, SUPPORT HER.

Dennis says, HOW CAN I?
SHE WON'T LET ME NEAR HER.

Oscar says, THERE'LL COME A TIME WHEN SHE
REALIZES SHE'S GOT IT WRONG,
THAT SHE'S NOT BEEN IN HER RIGHT
MIND.
THAT'S THE TIME SHE'S GOING TO
NEED YOU.

Dennis asks, AND UNTIL THEN?

Oscar says, HMM.

Outside, Helen walks with Gina

Helen says, YOU'VE MADE HER A PROMISE YOU
CAN'T KEEP, GINA.

Jenny watches Helen and Gina from inside her house.

Helen says, JEN IS IN NO FIT STATE TO MAKE
DECISIONS ABOUT HERSELF, SO WE
HAVE TO MAKE THEM FOR HER, AND
THAT MAY WELL MEAN SECTIONING
HER TO A PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL.

Gina says, SHE'LL THINK I'VE BETRAYED
HER.

Jenny says, ONCE SHE'S HERSELF AGAIN,
SHE'LL KNOW YOU ACTED IN HER
BEST INTERESTS, I'M SURE.

Gina looks sad. Jenny stares out a window. At the police station, Rob carries two mugs. He places one beside Phil who sits at a desk. Phil stands as DI Shiner enters. Shiner sighs.

Shiner says, I THINK WE CAN TIE UP ANY
LOOSE ENDS, NOW THAT DS RANKIN
HAS GONE BACK TO DIVISION, CAN'T
WE, LADS?

Rob and Phil say, YES, SIR.

Shiner says, RIGHT, THAT SEARCH YOU MADE
OF THE LAD'S HOUSE WAS ILLEGAL.
YOU SHOULD HAVE COME BACK FOR A
WARRANT.

Phil says, WAS MY FAULT, SIR.
I PERSUADED PC WALKER.

Rob says, NEITHER OF US WANTED THOSE
DRUGS ON THE LOOSE, SIR, WITH
ONE LAD ALREADY IN HOSPITAL
ALREADY.

Shiner says, BUT NO REAL HARM DONE, EH?
HAVE YOU CONTACTED THE OTHER
KIDS WHO BOUGHT DRUGS OFF YOUNG
MR. LLOYD?

Rob says, YES, SIR, WE'RE DEALING WITH
THAT.

Shiner says, GOOD.
I'LL GO AND SPEAK TO SERGEANT
MERTON, TELL HIM THAT, THANKS TO
YOU TWO, HE'S FACING ONE LESS
CHARGE.

Shiner leaves. Outside the Merton house, two cars are parked. One is the car from Bernie’s garage. Bernie and David stand with Helen.

Helen says, WE THOUGHT AN AMBULANCE MIGHT
FRIGHTEN JENNY; MUCH BETTER TO
HAVE A FRIEND TAKE HER TO
HOSPITAL.

Bernie says, I WANTED TO COME ALONG, IF
THERE'S ANYTHING I CAN DO.

Helen says, WELL, I'VE SEDATED HER, SO
SHE'S QUIET, BUT PERHAPS YOU AND
GINA COULD SIT IN THE BACK WITH
HER, JUST IN CASE.

Bernie says, OF COURSE.

David removes his hat.

(Footsteps)

Gina says, HERE'S DAVID AND BERNIE
WAITING FOR YA.

Gina and Jenny approach the cars. Jenny looks uneasy. Bernie steps over to Jenny.

(Relaxing music plays)

Bernie says, JENNY, LOVE, ARE YOU…

Jenny asks, WHERE ARE WE GOING?

Helen says, JUST FOR A LITTLE
DRIVE.

Gina says, DON'T WORRY, JEN.

David opens a back seat of the car from the garage. Helen walks around the car. Jenny climbs into the car with Gina behind her.

A person sings, I SEE MY LIGHT COME SHINING…

David tries to smile. Helen and Bernie climb in the car from the other side.

The person sings, …FROM THE WEST
DOWN TO THE EAST.

(Car doors closing)

The person sings, ANY DAY NOW,
ANY WAY NOW,
I SHALL BE RELEASED.

Jenny sits between Gina and Bernie. Elsewhere, Liz walks past Oscar in a hall.

Liz says, DENNIS, I'VE COME TO TELL YOU
THAT JENNY'S ON HER WAY TO
ASHFORDLY GENERAL.
HELEN HAS ARRANGED FOR HER TO
HAVE A PSYCHIATRIC ASSESSMENT
THERE.

Dennis nods.

He asks, WILL THEY LET ME SEE HER?

Liz says, ONLY IF SHE AGREES, BUT I
THINK IT'S IMPORTANT YOU'RE
THERE, IN CASE.
ALSO, THE PSYCHIATRIST WILL WANT
TO TALK TO YOU.

Dennis says, ABOUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH HER.

Liz says, ABOUT THAT AND ABOUT BEST TO
PROCEED.

Dennis says, OKAY, I'LL GET MY JACKET.

Dennis leaves.

Oscar asks, WILL SHE BE ADMITTED OR
SECTIONED?

Liz says, WELL, THAT'S FOR THE
PSYCHIATRIST TO DECIDE.

Dennis returns and pulls on a jacket.

He asks, DO I GO TO CASUALTY?

Liz says, NO.
SHE'S BEING ASSESSED ON THE
MEDICAL WARD, B3; THEY HAVE
SOME PSYCHIATRIC BEDS THERE.

Dennis starts to smile but breaks down. He covers his face with his hand.

Liz says, I'M SO SORRY, DENNIS.

Elsewhere, Mr. Lewis stands in a doorway facing a man who’s smoking.

Mr. Lewis says, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO CHARGE
HIM, ARE YOU?
JUST 'COS HE'S A COPPER HE'S
GOING TO GET AWAY WITH WHAT HE
DID.

Alf faces the Mr. Lewis.

Alf says, IF YOU REALLY AND HONESTLY WANT
SERGEANT MERTON CHARGED, HE WILL
BE, REST ASSURED OF THAT.

Mr. Lewis says, WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
"REALLY AND HONESTLY"?

Alf says, WELL, I WAS HOPING WHEN YOU
HEARD ALL THE FACTS, YOU WOULD UH,
FIND IT IN YOUR HEART TO
RECONSIDER.
DO YOU THINK I COULD I COME IN?
JUST FOR A MINUTE?

Mr. Lewis nods at Alf and steps back. Alf drops his cigarette and follows Mr. Lewis inside. Elsewhere, Gina paces in a hallway. She sits on a bench with Bernie and David. They all look worried. David looks over Bernie and Gina and down the hall. Dennis walks down the hall towards the group. Gina stands.

Gina says, DENNIS, I'M SO SORRY.

Dennis asks, HOW IS SHE, GINA?

Gina says, THE DOCTORS ARE WITH HER NOW.
HELEN GAVE HER A SEDATIVE, BUT…

Gina pauses. She looks upset.

Gina says, …I DON'T KNOW.
I'VE NEVER SEEN HER LIKE THIS
BEFORE.

Dennis looks down. He looks worried.

Gina says, I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYONE BEHAVE SO
STRANGELY.

Bernie says, THE DOCTORS'LL KNOW WHAT TO
DO, HOW TO HELP.

Dennis looks down the hall. The others turn to look down the hall. David stands. Helen walks towards the group.

Helen says, SERGEANT MERTON.

Bernie stands.

Helen says, PERHAPS WE COULD HAVE A WORD?

Gina turns back to face Dennis.

She says, WE'LL LEAVE YOU TO IT.

Dennis says, THANKS, GINA.

Gina steps towards Bernie and David.

She says, COME ON, LET'S GO.

Gina, Bernie and David leave. Back at Mr. Lewis’ house, Alf sits on a chair.

Alf says, SO, YOU SEE, SERGEANT
MERTON WASN'T CHASING HIS WIFE
TO HURT HER; HE WAS DESPERATELY
TRYING TO SAVE HER FROM HARMING
HERSELF.

Mr. Lewis says, I THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO
KILL HER, THAT'S WHY I STOPPED
HIM.

Alf says, OH, VERY BRAVE OF YOU.
I MEAN, IF HE HAD BEEN, YOU
MIGHT HAVE GOT AN AWARD.

Mr. Lewis says, INSTEAD, I'VE JUST MADE
THINGS WORSE.

Alf says, OH, YOU MUSTN'T BLAME
YOURSELF.
HOW WERE YOU TO KNOW?

Mr. Lewis says, THAT POOR MAN, HE MUST BE
GOING THROUGH HELL.

Alf says, HIS WIFE, HIS JOB, EVERYTHING
GONE, ALL IN THE BLINK OF
AN EYE.

Mr. Lewis looks thoughtful.

He says, I CAN'T HELP WITH HIS WIFE,
OF COURSE, BUT IF I WERE TO DROP
THE CHARGES, HE WOULDN'T LOSE
HIS JOB THEN, WOULD HE?

Alf says, NO, MR. LEWIS, HE WOULDN'T.
IF YOU'D BE SO KIND.

Mr. Lewis says, RIGHT THEN, WHAT DO I HAVE TO
DO?

Alf says, WELL UH, YOU UH,

Alf pulls a paper out from his jacket.

He says, YOU JUST SIGN HERE,
ON THE DOTTED LINE, WITHDRAWING
YOUR COMPLAINT, AND I CAN HANDLE
THE REST.

Mr. Lewis signs the paper. Elsewhere, Helen and Dennis sit outside on a bench. A car drives past.

Helen says, THE DUTY PSYCHIATRIST
HAS SEEN JENNY.

Dennis says, AND?

Helen says, IN HIS OPINION, SHE'S
SUFFERING FROM AN ACUTE
HYPOMANIC STATE WITH PARANOID
FEATURES.

Dennis says, AND WHAT DOES THAT MEAN IN
PLAIN ENGLISH?

Helen says, WELL, IT'S EARLY DAYS, BUT
JENNY PROBABLY HAS A SEVERE FORM
OF MANIC DEPRESSION.

Dennis says, WELL, THAT CAN BE TREATED,
CAN'T IT?

Helen says, JENNY'S GOING TO NEED
ADMISSION TO A PSYCHIATRIC
HOSPITAL, AND BECAUSE SHE'S
CONFUSED AND FRIGHTENED AND
DOESN'T WANT TO GO, SHE MAY HAVE
TO BE SECTIONED.

Dennis closes his eyes and sighs. He looks away and covers his face. He looks worried.

Helen says, SHE'S GOING TO GET THE TREATMENT
SHE NEEDS IN HOSPITAL.

Dennis sighs.

Helen says, BUT I'M
NOT GOING TO LIE TO YOU, DENNIS,
THERE'S NO MIRACLE CURE.
THIS IS GOING TO TAKE A LONG
TIME, MONTHS.
IT'S NOT GOING TO BE EASY FOR
EITHER OF YOU, BUT IT WILL BE
EASIER FOR JENNY IF SHE CAN RELY
ON YOUR HELP AND SUPPORT
THROUGHOUT.

Dennis says, BUT THE NEAREST RESIDENTIAL
PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL'S MILES
AWAY, ISN'T IT?

Helen says, YES.

Dennis says, I COULDN'T BE WITH JENNY AND
WORK HERE, COULD I?

Helen says, THAT'S NOT A DECISION YOU
HAVE TO FACE YET.
LET'S TAKE THIS STEP BY STEP.

Dennis looks worried. Elsewhere, someone hangs up a phone. Ben sits close by.

Liz says, ACUTE HYPOMANIA - IT'S BAD,
BEN.

Ben says, POOR JENNY.

Ben stands and steps towards Liz.

Ben says, AT LEAST SHE'S BEING CARED FOR
NOW, AND THE DRUGS HAVE BEEN
FOUND.

Liz looks down.

Ben says, YOU CAN STOP BLAMING YOURSELF.

Liz says, I'M A DOCTOR, I SHOULD HAVE
SEEN IT COMING.

Liz looks frustrated.

Ben asks, WELL, HOW COULD YOU HAVE?

Liz shakes her head.

She says, THERE WERE SIGNS.
IF I HADN'T BEEN SO PREOCCUPIED
WITH THE WEDDING, I...

Ben says, HMM, HINDSIGHT'S A WONDERFUL
THING.

Liz says, I KNOW, BUT SHE'S MY BEST
FRIEND.

Ben says, AND WOULD KNOWING HAVE
CHANGED ANYTHING?
COULD YOU HAVE PREVENTED HER
BREAKDOWN?

Liz says, NO.

Ben says, WELL, THEN.

Liz says, YEAH, BUT MAYBE I COULD HAVE
MADE IT LESS TRAUMATIC FOR HER
OR FOR DENNIS.

A person sings, NOT IF MY LOVE
CAN BIND YOUR HEART.

Elsewhere, Jenny sleeps in a bed.

A person sings, AND THERE'S NO NEED
TO TAKE A STAND
FOR IT WAS I WHO
CHOSE TO START.

Dennis watches Jenny through a window in a door.

The person sings, I SEE NO REASON
TO TAKE HER HOME.

At the pub, Oscar wears a yellow vest

He says, SO, YOUR HUSBAND'S LOOKING AT
ANOTHER HOUSE TODAY, THEN IS HE?

Helen smiles.

She says, SEEMED QUITE EXCITED ABOUT
IT.

Oscar says, WOULDN'T HAVE SURPRISED ME IF
YOU CHANGED YOUR MIND ABOUT
MOVING HERE, AFTER ALL THIS.

Oscar leaves.

At the bar, Phil says, WELL, AT LEAST THE SARGE'LL
BE ALL RIGHT, WITH THE CHARGES
BEING DROPPED.

Phil sits with Rob and Gina. Gina looks annoyed.

She says, ALL RIGHT?
WHAT WITH JENNY IN HOSPITAL?

Phil says, I JUST MEANT AT LEAST HE'S
STILL GOT A JOB.

Gina says, I'M NOT SURE THAT'S GOING TO
MEAN THAT MUCH TO HIM AT THE
MOMENT, PHIL.

Phil looks embarrassed. At Helen’s table, Matthew and Vernon join her.

Matthew says, HAVE WE FOUND THE HOUSE FOR
YOU!

Vernon says, I THINK WE HAVE.

Matthew says, I THINK THIS CALLS FOR DRINKS
ALL ROUND.

Helen doesn’t look interested. Matthew sits beside her.

Matthew asks, HAVE YOU CHANGED YOUR MIND OR
SOMETHING?

He puts his hand on Helen’s shoulder.

Helen says, NO.
SURPRISINGLY, I HAVEN'T.

Helen looks thoughtful.

She says, IF ANYTHING, TODAY HAS
STRENGTHENED MY FEELING THAT
MOVING HERE IS THE RIGHT THING
TO DO.

Matthew says, WELL, THAT'S ALL RIGHT THEN.

Helen says, YES, IT IS...

Matthew stands and leaves.

Helen says, …FOR US, ANYWAY.

Elsewhere, Dennis and Shiner walk outside of the police station.

Shiner says, I KNOW IT'S NOT GOING TO BE
EASY FOR YOU, BUT HEAD DOWN,
WORK HARD, AT LEAST YOU CAN
SALVAGE YOUR CAREER.

Dennis says, IF NOT MY MARRIAGE, EH?

Shiner says, WELL, YOUR WIFE, JENNY, ISN'T
GOING TO BE A GREAT DEAL OF
HELP TO YOU, IS SHE?

Dennis says, WELL, IS THAT THE WAY IT HAS
TO BE?
DOESN'T A HUSBAND HAVE A DUTY TO
HELP HIS WIFE, AS WELL?

Dennis and Shiner stop walking.

Shiner says, WELL OF COURSE, BUT SHE'S BEING
LOOKED AFTER IN HOSPITAL, A LONG
WAY AWAY.

Dennis says, I COULD ASK FOR A TRANSFER.

Shiner says, I'M SURE A PLACE WOULD BE
FOUND FOR YOU, ONE OF SEVERAL
SERGEANTS IN A BIGGER STATION.
YOU'D LOSE YOUR OWN PATCH,
DENNIS; IT'D BE A BIG STEP DOWN.

Dennis looks down.

Shiner says, DON'T DO ANYTHING RASH.
YOU'D EFFECTIVELY BE TURNING
YOUR BACK ON YOUR CAREER.

Dennis looks up at Shiner.

He says, I HAVE TO TURN MY BACK ON ONE
OF THEM, DON'T I?
EITHER MY WIFE OR MY CAREER.

(Bright music plays)

A person sings, JUST CALL ME ANGEL OF THE
MORNING, ANGEL

Shiner gets in a car outside the station.

The person sings, THEN SLOWLY TURN AWAY
FROM ME.

Dennis turns to walk back towards the police station.
