Transcript: America Divided: A Perspective | Nov 05, 2018

Steve sits in the studio. He's slim, clean-shaven, in his fifties, with short curly brown hair. He's wearing a blue suit, white shirt, striped blue tie, and a red poppy pin.

A caption on screen reads "America divided: A perspective. @spaikin, @theagenda."

Steve says IN RESPONSE TO A TWEET
ABOUT DEPLATFORMING LAST WEEK
AHEAD OF THE MUNK DEBATES HELD
IN THIS CITY,
CHRISTINA HOFF SOMMERS TWEETED:
"THE GREAT NATION OF CANADA IS
AT RISK OF DEVOLVING INTO AN
ELITE LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE
CAMPUS."
NO STRANGER TO BEING SHOUTED
DOWN HERSELF FOR VIEWS
CHALLENGING, AMONG OTHER THINGS
LEFT-LEANING FEMINISM, SHE'S
EXPERIENCED SOME OF THE
DIVISIONS IN HER NATIVE USA
FIRST HAND.
CHRISTINA HOFF SOMMERS IS A
RESIDENT SCHOLAR AT THE AMERICAN
ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE AND AUTHOR
OF SEVERAL BOOKS, INCLUDING "THE
WAR AGAINST BOYS" AND "WHO STOLE
FEMINISM?" AND SHE JOINS US NOW
TO TALK ABOUT A POLARIZED AMERICA.

Christina is in her fifties, with shoulder length straight blond hair. She's wearing a black cardigan over a printed white blouse, and a red poppy pin.

Steve continues SO NICE TO MEET YOU.

Christina says
NICE TO MEET YOU.

Steve says SHALL WE SHARE WITH
OUR GOOD VIEWERS HERE ABOUT
SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED TO YOU
NOT TOO LONG AGO AT
LEWIS and CLARK COLLEGE IN
PORTLAND, OREGON.
SOMEBODY GAVE A SPEECH AND IT
KIND OF GOT UGLY.
SHELDON, GO.

A clip plays on screen with the caption "March 5, 2018."
In the clip, protesters interrupt a speech in a university classroom holding signs and chanting.

Christina, standing behind a lectern, crosses her arms and watches.

A female leader chants
WE CHOOSE TO PROTEST MALE
SUPREMACY, NOT GIVE IT A
PLATFORM!
CHRISTINA HOFF SOMMERS HAS
REPEATEDLY DELEGITIMIZED THE
SUFFERING OF WOMEN WORLD WIDE!

The clip ends. Christina laughs.

The caption changes to "Politically ostracized."

Steve says YOU LAUGH, BUT AT
THE MOMENT, WHEN YOU'RE IN THE
MIDST OF ALL THAT...

The caption changes to "Christina Hoff Sommers. American Enterprise Institute."

Christina says BEWILDERING.
I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO BECAUSE
THEY WERE SO ADAMANT AND THERE
WERE... TO BE FAIR, THE
MAJORITY... THIS IS A LAW
SCHOOL.
DID NOT EXPECT THAT.
I'VE HAD THIS SORT OF THING
HAPPEN AT OBERLAND COLLEGE.
THE MAJORITY OF STUDENTS CAME TO
LISTEN.
A LOT DISAGREED WITH ME BUT THEY
WANTED TO HEAR WHAT I HAD TO SAY.

Steve says YOU COULD SEE A GUY
IN THE FRONT ROW LOOKING EMBARRASSED.

Christina says IT WAS EMBARRASSING AND THE SCHOOL APOLOGIZED.
BUT THIS IS THE SITUATION.
AND I WAS THERE SPEAKING.
I AM A FEMINIST.
I'M A LIBERAL FEMINIST.
I JUST TAKE EXCEPTION TO SOME OF
THE EXCESSES OF MY MORE RADICAL
COLLEAGUES.
SO I WAS THERE TO ARGUE FOR
MODERATION.
ARGUING FOR MODERATION WAS
CONSIDERED A FORM OF VIOLENCE.

Steve says EXPLAIN THAT TO ME.

Christina says WELL, BECAUSE I QUESTION WHAT
I FEEL ARE SOME EXAGGERATED
STATISTICS ABOUT WOMEN'S
VULNERABILITY IN THE UNITED
STATES, AND THEY THOUGHT THAT BY
QUESTIONING THE STATISTICS, I
WAS IMPLYING THAT THE PROBLEM
DIDN'T MATTER AND THEREFORE I
WAS DENYING THE PROBLEM, AND
WHAT I SAY IS THE PROBLEM
MATTERS GREATLY.
VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, ECONOMIC
INJUSTICE... THESE ARE SERIOUS
ISSUES THAT NEED SOBER RESEARCH,
NOT HYPE AND SPIN AND, YOU KNOW,
HYPERBOLE AND WE HAVE TOO MUCH
OF THAT.
WELL, THAT IS WHAT I WAS GOING
TO SAY BUT I WASN'T REALLY
ALLOWED TO GIVE ME SPEECH.

Steve says DID YOU GET TO GIVE
THE SPEECH EVENTUALLY?

Christina says NO, I REALLY DIDN'T.
I JUST HAD TO BASICALLY... THEY
KEPT COMING BACK AND THEY HAD
PEOPLE OUTSIDE THAT YOU COULDN'T
SEE, AND FINALLY THE DEAN OF
STUDENTS CAME AND JUST ASKED ME
TO WRAP IT UP AND TAKE
QUESTIONS.
SO I TOOK A FEW QUESTIONS AND
THEN LEFT BY POLICE ESCORT.

Steve says SO THEY SUCCESSFULLY
SHOUTED YOU DOWN.

Christina says YES.

Steve says SILENCED YOU IN SOME RESPECTS.

Christina says IT GOT A LOT OF PUBLICITY
BECAUSE WE SEE THAT THIS SORT OF
INTOLERANCE IS ESCALATING.
YOU'RE IN A LAW SCHOOL.
I THOUGHT THE PURPOSE WAS TO
LEARN HOW TO ARGUE, YOU KNOW?
AND I EXPECTED AND WELCOMED
ARGUMENTATION AND CHALLENGE FROM
THE STUDENTS, AND I LOVE THAT.
I MEAN, SOMETIMES I HOPE THEY
CHANGE THEIR MINDS, SOMETIMES I
CHANGE MY MIND.
THAT WAS WHAT WAS SUPPOSED TO
HAPPEN.
THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN.

Steve says THE CLIP GOES ON FOR
SEVERAL MINUTES AND WE JUST
SHOWED A SNIPPET OF IT.
LATER ON IN THAT EPISODE, SOME
STUDENTS DID SAY TO THE
PROTESTING STUDENTS, STOP IT.
WE WANT TO HEAR HER SPEAK AND
ASK QUESTIONS AFTERWARDS AND NOT
EVEN THAT HAPPENED, EH?

Christina says YOU KNOW, I'VE BEEN SPEAKING
ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES FOR MANY
YEARS.
IN THE PAST, IF STUDENTS HAD
SAID THAT, THEY WOULD HAVE
SUBSIDED.
WHAT'S CHANGED IS THEY DON'T ANY
LONGER BECAUSE I THINK THIS NEW
IDEOLOGY THAT SPEECH IS
VIOLENCE, THAT I AM DENYING...
I'M OTHER-IZING.
I'M GUILTY OF SOMETHING TO WHICH
THEY THINK THE PROPER RESPONSE
IS TO SILENCE ME.

Steve says IS THAT THE WORST
SITUATION YOU'VE BEEN IN LIKE
THAT?
IN OTHER WORDS, HAS THIS
HAPPENED ON OTHER CAMPUSES WHEN
YOU GO ELSEWHERE?

Christina says AT OBERLUND COLLEGE, THEY
WERE POLITE BUT INDIGNANT.
THERE WERE A LOT OF STUDENTS
WITH PROTEST SIGNS.
THEY HAD A SAFE PLACE THEY COULD
FLEE IN CASE SOMEONE WAS
TRAUMATIZING BY WHAT I SAID.
AND 30 STUDENTS AND A THERAPY
DOG FLED TO A SAFE ROOM.
I FEEL BAD ABOUT THAT DOG.

Steve says 30 STUDENTS LEFT
YOUR SPEECH AND WENT TO A
SO-CALLED SAFE ROOM WHERE THEY
WOULD BE PROTECTED FROM WHATEVER
IT WAS YOU WERE SAYING.

Christina says RIGHT, WHERE THEY COULD FEEL SAFE.

Steve says WHAT DID YOU THINK
OF THAT?

Christina says I THOUGHT IT WAS RIDICULOUS.
AND THAT I HAD A POLICE ESCORT?
I DON'T KNOW IF THEY WERE
PROTECTING ME FROM THE STUDENTS
OR THE STUDENTS FROM ME, AND IT
HAPPENED AT GEORGETOWN, IT
HAPPENED AT UMASS.
THERE WAS A YOUNG WOMAN GOING F
YOU, F YOU, AS I WAS SPEAKING,
AND LOTS OF OTHER PEOPLE.
I'VE SEEN THESE ANTICS BEFORE.
BUT THAT ABOUT THREE YEARS AGO.
SO SOMETHING THAT CHANGED.

Steve says WHAT?

The caption changes to "Christina Hoff Sommers, @CHSommers."

Christina says OH, WELL, THE CAMPUS IS A
STORY UNTO ITSELF.
AND PART OF IT I THINK COMES
FROM THEORIES THAT ARE POPULAR,
THAT ARE TAUGHT BY THE... I
DON'T KNOW, BY THE GENDER
STUDIES DEPARTMENT IN THIS CASE.
THERE WAS A PROFESSOR WHO
SUPPORTED THE STUDENTS
PROTESTING ME AT OBERLUND AND HE
CALLED MY DISCUSSION DISCURSIVE
VIOLENCE.
SOME PEOPLE SAY, OH, IT'S JUST
YOUTHFUL, YOU KNOW, FOLLY AND
THEY'RE EXCITED AND IMPASSIONED.
BUT THERE'S A THEORY BEHIND THIS
YOUTHFUL FOLLY AND A RATHER
INTOLERANT THEORY.
A THEORY THAT DOES NOT REALLY
RESPECT FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND
OUR CONSTITUTIONAL FREEDOMS IN
GENERAL BECAUSE THEY SEE IT AS
ALL PART OF A PATRIARCHAL
OPPRESSIVE SYSTEM AND WE HAVE TO
TEAR DOWN THE SYSTEM AND START
ANEW.

The caption changes to "Connect with us: Twitter: @theagenda; Facebook, agendaconnect@tvo.org, Instagram."

Steve says I'M TRYING TO FIGURE
OUT WHAT YOUR POLITICS ARE.
YOU'RE AT THE AMERICAN
ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE, WHICH IS
KIND OF A CONSERVATIVE
THINK-TANK.
YOU SAY YOU'RE A SMALL-L
LIBERAL.
WHERE IS YOUR POLITICAL HOME
THESE DAYS?

The caption changes to "Politically homeless."

Christina says I THINK LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE
I'M HOMELESS, POLITICALLY
HOMELESS.
I'M A REGISTER DEMOCRAT, OUT OF
RESPECT FOR MY 94-YEAR-OLD
MOTHER, THAT'S THE FAMILY
RELIGION.
AND I CONSIDER MYSELF SORT OF
MODERATE POLITICALLY, AND THERE
USED TO BE LIBERAL REPUBLICANS I
LIKED OR CONSERVATIVE DEMOCRATS,
AND THAT WAS FINE.
BUT NOWADAYS, BOTH SIDES, BOTH
PARTIES ARE BECOMING HIGHLY
POLARIZED...

Steve says THEY HAVE RETREATED
TO THEIR CORNERS.

Christina says THEY HAVE RETREATED TO THEIR
CORNERS.
AND WHAT'S VERY WORRISOME IS THE
ANGER BOTH GROUPS HAVE TO ONE
ANOTHER.
I DON'T HATE PEOPLE BECAUSE OF
THEIR POLITICS, UNLESS IT WAS
SOMETHING EXTREME AND HATEFUL.
A REPUBLICAN?
A DEMOCRAT?
MY FAMILY IS POLITICALLY QUITE
DIVERSE.
AND WE ALL GET ALONG.

Steve says QUITE DIVERSE.
YOUR MOTHER, YOU'RE SAYING, WAS
JUST... YOU JUST REFERENCED YOUR
MOTHER.

Christina says MY MOTHER IS SOCIALIST.

Steve says SHE IS VERY LEFT WING.
AND DAD?

Christina says MY SISTER SORT OF GOES ALONG
WITH HER.
I HAVE UNCLES WHO ARE
CONSERVATIVE.
ON MY HUSBAND'S SIDE, ORTHODOX
JEWS IN BOROUGH PARK, NEW YORK.
SOME OF WHOM ARE TRUMP
SUPPORTERS.
I GET ALONG WITH A LOT OF THEM.
YOU FIND A WAY TO WORK WITH
THEM.
BUT I'VE READ POLLS, WHAT PEOPLE
WOULD FEAR MOST IS IF THEIR
CHILD WOULD MARRY... A
REPUBLICAN FAMILY WOULD BE
HORRIFIED IF YOU MARRIED A
DEMOCRAT.
AND APPARENTLY PREJUDICE AGAINST
THE PARTIES, BETWEEN THOSE TWO
PARTIES, IS FAR MORE EXTREME
THAN RACIAL PREJUDICE...

Steve says THAT'S HILARIOUS.
I HADN'T HEARD THAT BEFORE.
NEVER MIND MARRYING OUTSIDE THE
FAITH NOW, IT'S MARRYING OUTSIDE
THE POLITICAL FAITH THAT'S MORE
IMPORTANT.

Christina says THAT'S RIGHT.

Steve says YOU DID MENTION YOU
HAVE PRO-TRUMP PEOPLE IN YOUR
BROADER FAMILY.

Christina says YES.

Steve says HOW DO YOU HAVE A
CONVERSATION WITH THEM ABOUT
POLITICS IN AMERICA TODAY?

Christina says AVOID IT.

Steve says REALLY?
THAT'S WHAT IT'S COME DOWN TO?

Christina says YEAH.
AND WITH THE OTHER SIDE OF MY
FAMILY WHO ARE FAR MORE LEFT
THAN I AM, I TRY AND FIND COMMON
GROUND ON SOME ISSUES...

Steve says SO YOU'RE THE ONE.
YOU'RE THE ONE AMERICAN TRYING
TO FIND COMMON GROUND THESE
DAYS.
ACTUALLY THERE'S PROBABLY A LOT
MORE OUT THERE.
WE JUST DON'T HEAR FROM YOU.
IS THAT FAIR TO SAY?

Christina says I THINK WE'RE THE MAJORITY.
THE PEOPLE ON THE FAR LEFT AND
EVEN ON THE CAMPUS, I THINK
THEY'RE A MINORITY.
THEY'RE JUST MORE CONFIDENT AND
MORE VOCAL.
SO ONE OF THE THINGS I TELL
COLLEGE AUDIENCES IS THAT
FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION AND, YOU
KNOW, COMMON SENSE, IT NEEDS A
LOBBY.
BECAUSE WE'RE TOO POLITE.
EVERYONE SHOULDN'T BE POLITE AND
CIVIL, BUT WE SHOULD BE A LITTLE
MORE OUTSPOKEN.

Steve says YOU LIVE JUST
OUTSIDE OF WASHINGTON, D.C.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN
WASHINGTON FOR?

Christina says SINCE 1997.

Steve says SO YOU'VE SEEN A FEW
DIFFERENT ADMINISTRATIONS COME
TO TOWN, AND EVERY TIME ONE
DOES, IT CHANGES THE CITY A
LITTLE BIT.
HOW IS WASHINGTON, D.C. AS A
CITY DIFFERENT NOW THAT DONALD
TRUMP AND HIS TEAM ARE IN?

Christina says OH.
THERE'S MORE POLARIZATION, AND
I'VE SEEN GROUPS OF FRIENDS...
YOU KNOW, PEOPLE STOP SPEAKING
TO ONE ANOTHER AND THERE ARE NEW
ALLIANCES.
YOU KNOW, PEOPLE ARE VERY
NERVOUS AND EVERYTHING IS
FRAUGHT.

Steve says FRAUGHT MEANING... I
CAN'T GO TO THAT PARTY WITH
THOSE PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY'RE
NEVER TRUMPERS OR ONLY TRUMPERS
AND THAT KIND OF THING?

Christina says THAT'S RIGHT.

Steve says THIS HAPPENS, RIGHT?
THIS HAPPENS.
WE HAD IT IN CANADA IN QUEBEC
OVER THE ISSUE OF SEPARATION OF
QUEBEC.
YOU KNOW, FAMILIES GET BROKEN UP
OVER THIS KIND OF THING.
HAVE YOU LOST FRIENDS OVER IT?

Christina says NO, I DON'T THINK I HAVE, ALTHOUGH MAYBE I DON'T KNOW.
YOU KNOW WHEN I LOST FRIENDS IS
WHEN I FIRST STARTED YEARS AGO
PROTESTING SOME OF THE RADICAL
DIRECTIONS THAT FEMINIST THEORY
WAS TAKING, AND THEN I WAS SORT
OF EXCOMMUNICATED FROM A
RELIGION I DIDN'T KNOW EXISTED.
SO THAT WAS WHERE I SORT OF GOT
USED TO IT.
SO NOW I REFUSE TO LOSE FRIENDS
OVER POLITICS.
I HAVE A FEW PEOPLE... I'M A
LITTLE... SOME OF THEM ARE
PUNDITS AND I HEAR WHAT THEY SAY
AND I'M A LITTLE ALARMED.

Steve says NAME NAMES.

Christina says LAURA INGRAM.

Steve says VERY CONSERVATIVE
RADIO AND TELEVISION HOST.

Christina says RIGHT.

Steve says YOU THINK SHE HAS
GONE OFF THE DEEP END NOW?

Christina says A LITTLE BIT.
AND MAYBE DANESH de SOUSA.
HE JUST HEAR THINGS.
I'VE KNOWN HIM FOR YEARS.
I HEAR THINGS AND THEY'RE
JUST... I WANT HIM TO CALM DOWN.
THE BOTH OF THEM ARE VERY SMART,
BUT MAYBE THAT'S HOW YOU GET
CELEBRITY, IS TO TAKE...

Steve says DIDN'T HE JUST GET A
PARDON FROM THE PRESIDENT?

Christina says YES.

Steve says THE PRESIDENT HAS
JUST PARDONED HIM.
WE'VE HAD HIM ON THIS PROGRAM.
I REMEMBER INTERVIEWING HIM 15,
20 YEARS AGO, AND HE WAS SORT OF
CONSIDERED A MAINSTREAM
CONSERVATIVE BACK THEN.
AND NOW HE'S WHERE?

Christina says I THINK HE'S... WELL, I
WOULDN'T SAY ALT-RIGHT.
I'M NOT EVEN SURE WHAT THAT
MEANS ANYMORE.
BUT PRETTY FAR TO THE RIGHT.

Steve says HAVE YOU FIGURED OUT
HOW DONALD TRUMP BECAME YOUR
PRESIDENT?

Christina says NO.
I NEVER THOUGHT IT WOULD HAPPEN.
I LAUGHED AT FRIENDS.
I WAS AT A PARTY AND ANDREW
SULLIVAN WAS THERE, BEFORE THE
ELECTION, AND HE SAID, "HE'S
GOING TO WIN.
HE'S GOING TO WIN."
AND I THOUGHT, THERE'S ANDREW
BEING...

Steve says DRAMATIC AGAIN.

The caption changes to "Watch us anytime: tvo.org, Twitter: @theagenda, Facebook Live."

Christina says DRAMATIC.
AND CATASTROPHIZING.
I'VE SEEN SO MANY DIFFERENT
ANALYSIS.
ONE THING WE'VE LEARNED,
PARTICULARLY PEOPLE IN
WASHINGTON, D.C., LEADERSHIP
THAT... THERE'S A LARGE GROUP OF
PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES THAT
WE'RE NOT WINNERS IN
GLOBALIZATION, DIDN'T FIND A
PLACE FOR THEMSELVES IN THE NEW
ECONOMY, AND, YOU KNOW, THEY
SPOKE.

Steve says I DON'T MEAN THIS TO
SOUND AS CRITICAL AS IT'S GOING
TO SOUND, BUT FOLKS LIKE YOU
DIDN'T KNOW ANY FOLKS LIKE THAT,
RIGHT?
BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THERE'S THIS
OLD LINE IN 1972, HOW DID NIXON
WIN... I DON'T KNOW ANYBODY WHO
VOTED FOR HIM, RIGHT?

Christina says I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I VOTED.
I WAS IN NEW YORK CITY IN
GREENWICH VILLAGE VOTING FOR
GEORGE McGOVERN, AND EVERYBODY
IN THE GREENWICH VILLAGE POST
OFFICE WAS VOTING FOR HIM AND
THEN HE LOST.
I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT.

Steve says EVERY STATE.
IT WAS A ROUT.

Christina says I'M NOT IN TOUCH, YOU KNOW,
WITH... BUT I WAS SURPRISED AT
THE... AND NOW I DO TRY TO PAY
ATTENTION.

Steve says LET'S SEE ABOUT
THIS.
DECISION DAY IS TOMORROW.
DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU'RE GOING TO
VOTE FOR?

Christina says NOT REALLY.
BECAUSE I LIVE IN MARYLAND.

Steve says YOU LIVE IN MARYLAND
SO YOU'RE GOING TO GET TO VOTE
FOR...

The caption changes to "Politically hopeful?"

Christina says WELL, THE GOVERNOR IS POPULAR
AND A REPUBLICAN.
I DON'T REALLY KNOW... I MEAN...

Steve says ALL THE HOUSE
RACES... OBVIOUSLY IT'S NOT A
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
BUT YOU'VE GOT ALL THE HOUSE
RACES AVAILABLE.
A THIRD OF THE SENATE IS UP FOR
GRABS.
I DON'T KNOW IF MARYLAND IS ONE
OF THOSE STATES.

Christina says I WOULD BE SATISFIED IF THE
HOUSE WERE... GOES TO THE
DEMOCRATS, MAYBE THE SENATE
STAYS WITH THE REPUBLICANS.

Steve says YOU'D BE CONTENT
WITH THAT?

Christina says I WOULD.

Steve says HOW WOULD THINGS
CHANGE IF THAT HAPPENED?

Christina says YOU KNOW, NOT MUCH.
ALTHOUGH THE CONGRESS WOULD HAVE
POWER TO DO A LOT OF
INVESTIGATIONS.
BUT I DON'T THINK THAT'S A BAD
THING IN THIS CASE.

Steve says YEAH, THE DEMOCRATS
AND THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES, IF THEY HAVE
THE MAJORITY, WOULD BE ABLE TO
UNDERTAKE NUMEROUS
INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE
PRESIDENT.
WOULD THAT BE GOOD?

Christina says HERE'S THE THING.
IT WOULD FEEL GOOD TO ME BECAUSE
I DON'T... I DON'T THINK HE'S A
MACHIAVELLIAN WITH AN ELABORATE
POLITICAL PLAN TO TAKE OVER THE
WORLD BECAUSE I DON'T THINK HE
THINKS THAT MUCH ABOUT POLITICS.
I JUST WORRY ABOUT CORRUPTION
AND CHAOS.
AND SO THE HOUSE MIGHT BE ABLE
TO HELP THAT.
ON THE OTHER HAND I WORRY ABOUT
THE LEFT AND I WORRY ABOUT
LIBERALS AS WELL.

Steve says WHAT DO YOU WORRY ABOUT?

Christina says BECAUSE A LOT OF THE KIND OF
CRAZY POLITICS, POLITICAL
CORRECTNESS, JUST RECKLESS VIEWS
ON IMMIGRATION OR GOVERNMENT
REGULATION THAT WE USED TO
ASSOCIATE WITH THE FAR LEFT ARE
NOW MAINSTREAM POSITIONS OF MANY
DEMOCRATS OR THEY GO ALONG WITH
THEM, EVEN IF THEY DON'T CARE TO
DO THAT.

Steve says YOU'RE A LONG WAY
FROM BILL CLINTON'S DEMOCRATIC
PARTY TODAY.

Christina says YOU KNOW, I MISS BILL
CLINTON... NOT THE
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.
BUT THAT WAS THE KIND OF
DEMOCRAT THAT I WAS COMFORTABLE
WITH.

Steve says MORE CENTRIST...

Christina says AND I THINK HE WAS A GOOD LEADER.
AND PEOPLE SEEM TO HAVE
FORGOTTEN THAT WE ARE A
PLURALISTIC DEMOCRACY, AND THAT
MEANS THAT YOU HAVE TO
COMPROMISE.
AND THE LANGUAGE OF COMPROMISE
IS JUST GONE FROM BOTH PARTIES.
AND SO WE'RE GOING TO GET
EXTREME POSITIONS THAT ARE
DAMAGING TO THE COUNTRY.

Steve says COMPROMISE IS A
DIRTY WORD IN THE UNITED STATES
RIGHT NOW.

Christina says IT IS.

Steve says IT REALLY IS.
DO YOU HAVE A SENSE ABOUT HOW
THE COUNTRY IS GOING TO COME
BACK FROM THE... YOU KNOW, WE
SAID EARLIER THEY'VE GONE TO
THEIR RESPECTIVE CORNERS.
HOW DO WE GET MORE PEOPLE
SNUGGLING INTO THE MIDDLE AND
PROGRESS ACTUALLY HAPPENS THAT
HAS A BROAD CONSENSUS?

Christina says IT MAY BE THAT THE REASON
WE'RE GETTING AWAY WITH NOT
COOPERATING, NOT ACCOMPLISHING
MUCH, CREATING CHAOS, MAYBE
WE'RE GETTING AWAY WITH IT
BECAUSE OVERALL THINGS ARE
PRETTY GOOD.
THEY'RE NOT GREAT AND THEY'RE
CERTAINLY NOT GREAT FOR A LOT OF
PEOPLE.
BUT OVERALL, COMPARED TO OTHER
SOCIETIES AND OTHER PERIODS OF
HISTORY, THERE IS... I MEAN,
MOST AMERICANS, CRIME IS WAY
DOWN, EMPLOYMENT IS WAY UP, AND
OVERALL PEOPLE ARE SAFE AND
SECURE.
SO IT MAY BE BECAUSE OF THAT
WE'RE INDULGING IN THIS SORT OF
PERFORMATIVE POLITICS AND MAYBE
WE DON'T MEAN IT AND I DON'T
WANT IT TO HAPPEN BUT IT'S BOUND
TO HAPPEN THERE IS REALLY A
CRISIS AND THAT COULD HAVE A,
YOU KNOW, A GOOD IMPACT ON
PEOPLE AND THEY WOULD BE FORCED
TO SOLVE PROBLEMS BECAUSE THE
PROBLEMS ARE SO CRITICAL.

Steve says I'VE GOT A MINUTE
LEFT HERE TO ASK YOU TWO MORE
QUESTIONS: DO YOU THINK DONALD
TRUMP IS GOING TO RUN FOR
REELECTION IN TWO YEARS?

Christina says YES.

Steve says YOU THINK HE WILL.
QUESTION 2: DO YOU THINK HE WINS
AGAIN?

Christina says YOU KNOW, I CAN'T BELIEVE
THAT HE WOULD, EXCEPT WHEN I SEE
SOME OF THE ANTICS OF THE FAR
LEFT, THEN I THINK... YOU KNOW,
PEOPLE... IT'S TIRESOME BECAUSE
PEOPLE SAY, OH, WELL, THAT'S WHY
DONALD TRUMP WON, THE LEFT DID
SOMETHING CRAZY.
BUT IT MAY BE THAT HE CAN WIN.
IF WE HAVE A DISCIPLINED,
REASONABLE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, I
THINK THEY COULD BEAT HIM
EASILY.
BUT IF THEY CHOOSE A CANDIDATE
THAT, YOU KNOW, I DON'T KNOW,
YOU SEE SOME OF THE CANDIDATES,
IT'S NOT REASSURING.
SO I WORRY IF THE COUNTRY HAD TO
CHOOSE BETWEEN THE FAR RIGHT AND
FAR LEFT, THEY'LL PROBABLY GO TO
THE FAR RIGHT.

The caption changes to "Producer: Wodek Szemberg, @wodekszemberg."

Steve says YOU REALLY ARE
POLITICALLY HOMELESS, AREN'T YOU?
CHRISTINA HOFF SOMMERS RESIDENT
SCHOLAR AT THE AMERICAN ENTERPRISE
INSTITUTE IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
NICE OF YOU TO COME IN TO TVO TONIGHT.

Christina says NICE TO MEET YOU.
