John is in his fifties, with short wavy white hair and wears a blue half-buttoned shirt.

He says MY NAME IS JOHN
KASTNER.
I'M THE DIRECTOR
OF A FILM CALLED
"OUT OF MIND,
OUT OF SIGHT."

(music plays)

A caption reads "Out of Mind, Out of Sight: Inside the Brockville Psych."

The caption changes to "John Kastner. Director."

John says IT'S ABOUT AN INSTITUTION
THAT USED TO BE CALLED
AN ASYLUM FOR THE
CRIMINALLY INSANE,
TODAY CALLED A FORENSIC
PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL.
AND THESE PLACES HAVE KEPT THE
MEDIA OUT FOR GENERATIONS.
THEY HIDE AWAY
THESE PATIENTS.
BUT, "OUT OF MIND, OUT OF
SIGHT," IT'S A REAL SLICE
OF WHAT LIFE IS LIKE
IN THOSE INSTITUTIONS.

A woman with short brown hair lies on a bed with a white teddy bear.

She says THIS IS WHAT I CALL
MY IMAGINARY FRIEND.

A female voice says CAROL WAS FOUND NCR ON
ACCOUNT OF MENTAL DISORDER.
CAROL HAS BEEN ESTRANGED
FROM HER FAMILY.
THERE ARE NO NEXT OF KIN
NOTED IN HER CLINICAL CHART.

John says THEY CANNOT CURE PARANOID
SCHIZOPHRENIA AT LEAST;
IT'S A LIFELONG CONDITION.
PEOPLE NEED MEDICATION FOR
THE REST OF THEIR LIVES,
FOR THE MOST PART.
BUT THAT SAID, PEOPLE SEEM TO
THINK THE PEOPLE WHO COMMIT
THESE HORRIBLE ACTS OF
VIOLENCE REMAIN THE MONSTERS-
THE SO-CALLED MONSTERS THAT THEY
SAW WHEN THE STORIES FIRST BROKE
IN THE HEADLINES, BECAUSE THAT'S
THE LAST THEY SEE OF THEM.

A woman with straight white hair with bangs says SHE EVENTUALLY DIED FROM SEVERE
BLUNT TRAUMA TO THE HEAD.

John says IN FACT, THEY CAN DO AMAZING
THINGS WITH THESE PEOPLE.
THAT WAS THE FIRST THING I
SAW WHEN I WENT IN TO DO
MY RESEARCH; I SAW - WHAT I
CALL THE JEKYLL-AND-HYDE
TRANSFORMATION.

(music plays)

Michael is in his thirties, with short wavy brown hair.

A male voice says MARCO IS A WARM, INTELLIGENT
YOUNG MAN STRUGGLING
WITH A DEVASTATING ILLNESS
WHICH IS SCHIZOPHRENIA.

John says THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR
ME WAS DEALING WITH PEOPLE
WITH ADVANCED MENTAL ILLNESS
WHO WERE FRAGILE.
SO I WAS WALKING ON
EGGSHELLS FOR QUITE A WHILE
WHEN I WAS IN THE INSTITUTION,
TERRIBLY AFRAID
THAT I WOULD SET THE PATIENTS
OFF IN SOME NEGATIVE WAY.

John says LET ME JUST ASK YOU BEFORE
WE CONTINUE, ARE YOU OKAY?

Marco says UM, I THINK I'M
FINE, YEAH.

John says OKAY, YOU'LL SAY SOMETHING
IF YOU NEED TO STOP,
IF YOU WANT TO STOP
IT, IT'S COOL, MAN.

Marco says OKAY.

John says OKAY?
AND TO BE PERFECTLY
HONEST, I WAS SPOOKED
WHEN I WENT IN THERE.
I HAD ALL THE PREJUDICES
THAT EVERYBODY HAS.
THE FIRST TIME I WENT IN
THERE I SAW PATIENTS
SITTING ON THE LAWN
SMOKING AND LOOKING AT ME.
AND I'VE DONE A LOT
OF STUFF IN PRISONS.
I KNOW A LOT OF PEOPLE
WHO HAVE KILLED PEOPLE
AND DONE ALL KINDS
OF THINGS.
BUT I WAS SPOOKED.

A care taker says YOU'RE YELLING.

A patient says I'M ANGRY!

The care taker says CALM DOWN.

The patient says HE WON'T TURN THE
RADIO DOWN!
JUST PUT THE-

The care taker says SHHH, JUST
COME WITH ME.
THAT'S NOT GOING
TO HELP YOU.

John says MY GOAL WAS TO SHOW
THE HUMAN BEING
BENEATH THE
SO-CALLED MONSTER.
AND OFTEN THE
HURTING HUMAN BEING
BENEATH THE
SO-CALLED MONSTER.
BECAUSE OFTEN THESE PEOPLE
COME TO THEIR SENSES,
REALIZE THEY'VE DONE
THIS TERRIBLE THING,
AND ARE OVERCOME
WITH REMORSE.

Another care taker says WHAT KIND OF THOUGHTS ARE
YOU HAVING RIGHT NOW?

Carol says "That I want to kill myself, that I want to hang myself."

The care taker says AND WE'RE HERE TO
TAKE CARE OF YOU.
RIGHT.
AND WE'RE HERE TO
KEEP YOU SAFE.

Carol says "I know that but I don’t feel loved."

John says I THINK RIGHT NOW IN
CANADA, PEOPLE WHO COMMIT
THESE TERRIBLE ACTS OF
VIOLENCE ARE PROBABLY THE MOST
UNPOPULAR PEOPLE IN
THIS COUNTRY RIGHT NOW.
AND WE SET OUT TO SHOW
NO, YOU KNOW.
THEY'RE NOT EVIL;
THEY'RE ILL.

Carol says "And I used the palm of my, the ball of my hand to smuck right into the wall and I went like that until I punched a hole about that deep."

She puts his hands in a circle.

John says MY GOAL ABSOLUTELY WAS
TO BRING MORE COMPASSION
FOR THESE PATIENTS.
THE CANADIAN PUBLIC ARE
HUGELY DIVIDED ABOUT THEM.
THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE
OUT THERE WHO THINK
THEY ARE CRIMINALS, WHO CANNOT
GET IT THROUGH THEIR HEAD;
THEY'RE ILL.
HEY, CAROL,
HEY.

A man says SHE CAN BE KIND.
SHE CAN COME UP AND
GIVE YOU COMPLIMENTS.

John says WAS IT POSSIBLE TO GO BEYOND
AN UNDERSTANDING OF ILLNESS
TO ACTUALLY MAKE PEOPLE
FEEL FOR HIM, CARE FOR HIM?
AND FINALLY, WAS IT
POSSIBLE TO DO ALL OF THAT
WITHOUT IN ANY WAY
DIMINISHING THE HORRIFIC
ORDEAL OF THE VICTIMS.
THAT'S THE CHALLENGE
WE SET OUT TO DO.
AND YOU CAN JUDGE FOR YOURSELF
WHEN YOU WATCH THE FILM
IF WE SUCCEEDED OR NOT.

(music plays)
