Transcript: Alternate Route: Thinking | Feb 26, 1988

The scene opens with a map of the United States and Canada against a blue background. Colourful copies of the map twirl across the screen in rapid succession and lay on top of the original. A random assortment of States and Provinces are highlighted.

Narrator says THE FOLLOWING
COOPERATIVE PROJECT
IS SUPPORTED BY STATE
AND PROVINCIAL AGENCIES
WORKING THROUGH
THE AGENCY
FOR INSTRUCTIONAL
TELEVISION.

A black slate appears. It reads "On the Level."

The scene changes to an aerial view of a lodge.

Kate narrates I'D ONLY BEEN WORKING
AT LAKESIDE LODGE FOR A FEW
DAYS WHEN I MET LISA.
WHAT AN EXPERIENCE
THAT WAS.
ONE AFTERNOON, SHE OFFERED
TO SHOW ME THE TOWN.
I MADE THE MISTAKE
OF SAYING YES.

The scene fades to a waiter playing chess against a waitress. The waiter is in his twenties, with a brown bear, short, brown hair, and is wearing a white shirt, black tie, and black slacks.

Kate and Lisa walk up to Charlie. Lisa ruffles Charlie’s hair and says SEE YOU, CHARLIE.

Charlie calls out
HEY, LISTEN YOU TWO, I WANT
YOU BACK IN TIME FOR THE
DINNER SHIFT TONIGHT.
WE'RE SHORT.

Lisa says SURE, CHARLIE.
WE'RE JUST GOING INTO
TOWN FOR A WHILE.

Charlie says I MEAN
IT THIS TIME.
5 O'CLOCK SHARP.
I MEAN IT!

Kate says WE'LL BE BACK IN PLENTY
OF TIME, Mr. JACKSON.
I PROMISE.

Charlie says AND DON'T PARK THAT PIECE
OF JUNK IN THE FRONT LOT.

The title of the episode reads "Alternate Route: Thinking." The two girls enter a yellow Beatle. Lisa is in her late teens with shoulder length, wavy black hair. She is wearing a floral top with short-shorts. Kate is in her late teens and have chest length, straight, dirty blond hair. She is wearing a white blouse and jeans. Lisa drives off.

Kate narrates
WE GOT ALONG FINE
ON THE DRIVE THERE.
LISA SEEMED NICE ENOUGH.
A LITTLE FLIGHTY MAYBE, BUT
WHO WAS I TO CRITICIZE?
IT WASN'T UNTIL LATER THAT
I BEGAN TO HAVE MY DOUBTS.

A clip shows Lisa driving onto a one-way street.
[Tires screeching]

Kate continues
DIDN'T TAKE ME LONG TO
REALIZE I WAS WITH A DINGBAT.
BUT SO WHAT?
AS LONG AS I GOT BACK
TO THE LODGE IN TIME.

A clip shows the girls walking out of a store. The clerk runs up to Lisa and hands Lisa her purchases. Lisa shakes her head and smiles. A moment later, the girls are eating ice cream cones. They enter Lisa’s car and Lisa drives off. Their purchased goods fall off the roof of the car as Lisa drives away.

Now the girls pull up to a gas station.

Lisa says SURE IS HOT.

Kate says HURRY, OKAY?
WE'VE ALREADY SPENT
TOO MUCH TIME IN TOWN.

Lisa says IT ONLY TAKES AN
HOUR TO DRIVE BACK, KATE.
RELAX.

Two teenage boys are standing by a truck. Boy 1 is in his early twenties, clean-shaven, with short, black hair. He is wearing a white shirt, jeans, and sneakers. Boy 2 is in his early twenties, clean-shaven, with wavy, blond hair. He is wearing a green shirt, jeans, and sneakers.

Boy 1 says OH, YEAH.

Boy 2 says OH, LOOK AT THAT.
HEY, HOW ARE YOU TODAY?
YOU'RE LOOKING GOOD.
LET ME HELP YOU
FILL IT UP.

Kate walks out of the store and says READY?

Boy 1 looks at his friend and says COME ON,
COME ON.

The two boys approach the girls as they are entering their car.

Boy 1 says HI, BABY.

Lisa says HI.

Johnny says YOU GUYS DON'T
WANT TO LEAVE.
YOU'LL BREAK
MY HEART.

Lisa sarcastically says GEE, I'D HATE
TO DO THAT.

Kate says LET'S GO, LISA.

Boy 1 says LISA.
THAT'S A NICE NAME.

Johnny says NICE CAR
YOU GOT HERE, LISA.

Lisa says YEAH, IT GETS ME
WHERE I WANT TO GO.

Boy 1 says HEY, YOU WANT TO PARTY WITH
ME AND JOHNNY TONIGHT?

Lisa says ARE YOU SERIOUS?

Boy 1 says HE'S A SERIOUS MAN.
HA!

Lisa drives off. The boys try to hang on to the car but fall off.

Boy 1 calls out
I LOVE YA!

Now, the girls are driving on the road.

Kate says YOU REALLY THINK WE'RE
GOING THE MAKE IT BACK TO
THE LODGE ON TIME?

Lisa says I SAID DON'T
WORRY, OKAY?
DON'T WORRY.

Kate narrates I HAD TO
BELIEVE HER.
SHE'D WORKED THERE AS A
WAITRESS FOR TWO SUMMERS.
BUT WHAT IF WE DIDN'T SHOW
UP UNTIL TIME FOR DESSERT?

Lisa looks in her rearview mirror and says YOU KNOW, I THINK THOSE
GUYS ARE FOLLOWING US.

Kate narrates THAT WASN'T THE
GREATEST NEWS I HEARD ALL
DAY, AND I LET HER KNOW IT.

Kate looks at Lisa and says YOU KNOW IT'S YOUR FAULT.
YOU ENCOURAGED THEM.
NOW WHO KNOWS
WHAT THEY'LL DO?

Lisa says DO?
WHAT CAN THEY DO?
ATTACK US?
The two boys approach the girls in their truck. Boy 1 leans out of the truck and waves.

Kate narrates SHE HAD A POINT.
THEY DIDN'T LOOK MEAN,
BUT THEY SURE WERE DRUNK.

Boy 1 shouts
WOO!

Kate says LISA, WE'VE GOT TO
THINK OF A PLAN TO GET
RID OF THEM.

Lisa says YOU'RE RIGHT.

Lisa turns the car around and drives in the opposite direction.

Kate narrates SOME PLAN THAT WAS.

Kate looks at Lisa and says LISA, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
ARE YOU CRAZY?

Lisa says NO.
YOU JUST SAID TO
GET RID OF THEM.

Kate says OKAY, WELL, LET'S FIND A
PHONE AND CALL THE LODGE,
OR MAYBE WE COULD...

Lisa says NO, I'VE GOT
A BETTER IDEA.
I KNOW A SHORTCUT
BACK TO THE LODGE.
IT'S RIGHT UP AHEAD.

Kate says YOU'VE ALREADY
TAKEN IT?

Lisa says NO, BUT IT MUST
GO AROUND THE LAKE.

Kate says LET'S AT LEAST
FIND A MAP.

Kate rummages through the glove compartment and narrates
THINGS WERE BEGINNING
TO GET OUT OF CONTROL.

Lisa says IT'S NOT GOING TO
BE ON A MAP, KATE.
I KNOW
IT GOES TO THE LAKE.
I'M PRETTY SURE ANYWAY.
JUST RELAX.

Kate narrates
RELAX SHE TOLD ME.
HERE WE WERE WITH TWO DRUNKS
OR OUR TAIL, HEADING FOR
A SHORTCUT SHE'D NEVER
TAKEN, AND SHE SAID RELAX.
THERE WAS A GOOD
CHANCE WE'D GET LOST.
I FIGURED WE SHOULD GO
BACK TO TOWN AND CALL
Mr. JACKSON.

Lisa suddenly swerves and says HERE IT GOES.

Kate exclaims
LISA, HOLD ON...

Kate narrates
I COULDN'T BELIEVE HER.
LITTLE DID I KNOW SHE WAS
JUST GETTING STARTED.
[engine sputtering]
DIDN'T TAKE LONG BEFORE
DISASTER STRUCK,
AND WE REALLY
NEEDED A PLAN.

The girls are shown on the side of the road with a flat tire.

Kate slams the boot of the car and exclaims
LISA, THERE'S
NO SPARE!

Lisa says WELL, DON'T
LOOK AT ME.

Kate asks
WELL, WHAT ARE
WE GONNA DO?

Lisa says I DON'T KNOW.

Kate says SOMEONE'S COMING.
OH, NO.

They watch as Boy 1 and Johnny drive up in their truck. The truck splashes mud on Lisa.

She exclaims
WATCH IT!
STUPID CREEPS!
The boys park the truck on the side of the road.

Kate says I DON'T BELIEVE THEM.
YOU THINK THEY'RE
COMING TO HELP US?

Boy 1 calls out
YOU GOT A FLAT
TIRE NEEDS FIXING?

Lisa exclaims
I'M GETTING
OUT OF HERE.

She runs off.

Kate calls out
WAIT, LISA.

The boys exit the truck. Boy 1 is carrying a pole while Johnny holds a rifle.

Kate narrates
IT SEEMED TO ME THAT
IF WE KEPT RUNNING,
THEY'D KEEP CHASING.
THE SMART THING TO DO MIGHT
BE TO QUIT PLAYING THE GAME.
BUT I KNEW THE WORST THING
WE COULD DO WAS SPLIT UP.
SO I FOLLOWED HER.

Kate turns to chase Lisa.

Boy 1 calls out
HEY, LISA!

Kate and Lisa run through a field as the boys stalk them from behind.

Kate narrates TRY COMING UP WITH
A PLAN WHEN YOU'RE BEING
CHASED BY TWO MANIACS.
IT WASN'T EASY.
THE WAY I SAW IT WE
HAD THREE OPTIONS.
WE COULD HEAD FOR THE LAKE,
BUT LISA DIDN'T REALLY KNOW
WHERE IT WAS.
WE COULD TRY TALKING TO
THE GUYS, BUT IN THEIR
CONDITION, THAT
SEEMED CHANCY.
OR WE COULD RUN THROUGH THE
WOODS BACK TO THE HIGHWAY
AND FIND SOMEONE
TO HELP US.
THAT SEEMED THE SAFEST PLAN
TO ME, BUT LISA WOULDN'T
STOP LONG ENOUGH TO LISTEN.

The girls climb down a rocky cliff into a river below.

Boy 1 says YOU SEE 'EM ANYWHERE?

Johnny says NO.

Boy 1 crouches at the river’s edge. Lisa and Kate are waist deep in water, hiding underneath a hanging cliff.

Boy 1 says THEY'RE OUT
HERE SOMEWHERE.
WA HOO!

Johnny says SURE COULD USE MORE
WHERE THAT CAME FROM.

He throws an empty bottle into the river. It lands next to the girls.

Boy 1 says SUPPOSE YOU GET
YOUR OWN NEXT TIME.
SEE THEM ANYWHERE?

Johnny responds
NAH, THEY AIN'T
OVER THERE.

Boy 1 says AH, LET'S GET
OUT OF HERE.
LISA!
WHERE ARE YOU, LISA?

The boys turn to leave.

Boy 1 sings
PICKED A FINE TIME
TO LEAVE ME LISA

The girls wade through the water.

Kate narrates WE FOLLOWED THE
CREEK FOR HALF AN HOUR.
LISA OBVIOUS DIDN'T KNOW
IF THIS CREEK WAS RUNNING
TOWARD THE LAKE
OR AWAY FROM IT.
IT WAS TIME TO GO BACK.

The girls are shown walking over rocks in the pond.

Kate says I THINK WE'RE LOST.

Lisa retorts
WE'RE NOT LOST,
COME ON.

She continues forward.

Kate says LISA, WAIT.

Lisa says WHAT?
YOU WANT THOSE
GUYS TO CATCH YOU?
OKAY, FINE WITH ME,
I'M GOING TO THE LAKE.

Kate says YOU DON'T KNOW
WHERE THE LAKE IS.
I'VE HAD IT
WITH YOU, LISA.
I'M NOT FOLLOWING
YOU ANYMORE.

Lisa says HEY, WOULD YOU
COME ON?

Kate places her hand on her head.

Kate says LISA, JUST SHUT UP AND
LET ME THINK ABOUT THIS.

Lisa says THOSE GUYS WOULD HAVE
GRABBED US IF I'D WAITED
AROUND FOR YOU TO THINK.

Kate says OH, YEAH?
WELL LET ME TELL YOU
SOMETHING, THOSE MEN
WOULDN'T HAVE FOLLOWED US
IN THE FIRST PLACE IF
YOU'D USED YOUR HEAD.
YOU NEVER STOP TO
THINK, YOU JUST GO.

Lisa says DON'T TRY TO
BLAME ME, KATE.
YOU DIDN'T HAVE
TO FOLLOW ME.

Kate explains
I THOUGHT IT WAS IMPORTANT
FOR US NOT TO BE SPLIT UP,
LISA, YOU'RE LIKE AN
IMPULSIVE FIVE-YEAR-OLD.

Lisa exclaims
YOU THINK THAT?!
OKAY, FINE, YOU'RE SO SMART,
YOU FIND YOUR OWN WAY BACK.

Lisa and Kate head off in opposite directions.

Kate narrates I FORCED MYSELF TO
TRY AND ANALYZE WHAT TO DO.
THE PROBLEM WAS TO FIND HELP
BEFORE THOSE GUYS FOUND ME.
I THOUGHT OF GOING BACK
TO THE HIGHWAY AND TRYING
TO HITCHHIKE.
BUT THAT DIDN'T
SEEM TOO SAFE.
I COULDN'T BE SURE
WHO'D PICK ME UP.
MAYBE THE CAR
WAS THE SOLUTION.
BUT I WASN'T SURE HOW
TO GET BACK TO THE CAR,
OR WHAT I COULD DO
THERE IF I DID.
THE BEST I COULD THINK
OF WAS FINDING HELP.
AND THAT MEANT
FINDING A HOUSE.
AS IT TURNED OUT, I
DIDN'T HAVE FAR TO GO.

Kate stumbles out of the forest and runs towards a two story white house.

Kate narrates
IT LOOKED LIKE MY
LUCK HAD CHANGED.
ON THE OTHER HAND, I'D HAD
ENOUGH TROUBLE FOR ONE DAY,
I DECIDED TO CHECK
THE PLACE OUT.

She walks up the front stairs and surveys the house.

Kate narrates
THE RADIO WAS ON.
THERE HAD TO BE
SOMEBODY AROUND.

She creeps around the corner and sees Boy 1 standing by his truck.

Kate turns around and exclaims
OH, NO!

Johnny grabs hold of Kate’s wrists and says WELL, NOW.
GOTCHA, BABY.
COME ON.

The scene changes to inside of the house at night. Kate sits on the couch while Johnny sits on a chair in front of her.

Johnny says WE WASN'T GONNA
HURT YOU.
AIN'T THAT
RIGHT, A.J?

AJ says YEAH.

Johnny says WE JUST WANT TO SCARE
YOU, THAT'S ALL.
AIN'T THAT RIGHT?

Lisa is shown crouching outside of a window. She stops to observe the scene and then moves away.

AJ crouches next to Johnny and says YEAH.
[laughing]

He holds up a beer bottle and asks
YOU GOT AN OPENER?
Johnny says YEAH.

He cracks open the beer.

Kate mumbles
I'VE GOT TO
CALL THE LODGE.
CAN I USE THE PHONE?

AJ says YOU WANT TO USE THE PHONE,
YOU CAN USE THE PHONE.
YOU CAN CALL
ANYONE YOU WANT TO.

Kate stands up and says WELL, WHERE IS IT?

Johnny says YOU FIND IT.

Kate gets up creeps to the front door. She jiggles the handle.

Johnny calls out
HEY, BABY, IN
CASE YOU GOT ANY IDEAS,
THE DOOR IS LOCKED.

Lisa says PSST.
KATE, KATE COME HERE.

She stands in front of a window.

Kate rushes over and says LISA, GO SEE IF THE
KEYS ARE IN THE TRUCK.

Lisa says OKAY.

Johnny says HEY, HONEY,
WHAT'S TAKING SO LONG?

Kate says I DON'T THINK YOU
GUYS HAVE A PHONE.

She turns to Lisa and says LISTEN, HERE'S WHAT
YOU'VE GOT TO DO.

Back in the living room, Johnny and AJ are laughing.

Johnny says WE HAVEN'T
GOT A PHONE.
WELL, I GUESS WE'RE NOT
GONNA CALL ANYONE THEN,
ARE WE BABY?

Back at the window, Kate says FIND A WAY TO GET
ME OUT OF HERE.

Johnny calls out
HEY, I'M
COMING IN THERE.

Lisa says TRUST ME.
JUST LEAVE IT TO ME.

She runs off.

Kate narrates LEAVE IT UP
TO HER, SHE SAID.
OH, GREAT, MY FATE IN THE
HANDS OF A CERTIFIED FLAKE.

Kate stands up and says GUESS WHAT,
NO PHONE.

An image shows Lisa out in the truck.

Back in the house Kate says I THINK I'LL HAVE
THAT BEER AFTER ALL.

Johnny says OH, YEAH?

Kate slowly walks backwards and says IT'S RIGHT IN
HERE, RIGHT?

Johnny moves towards the fridge and says YEAH, SURE, BABY,
I'LL GET IT FOR YOU.

Outside, Lisa is placing glue on the steps leading up to the front door. She accidently drops a metal pipe.
[bang]

Back in the house, Johnny calls out
HEY, WHAT'S THAT?

Kate says I DIDN'T
HEAR ANYTHING.
SAY, WHY DON'T WE
TURN ON THE RADIO?
A LITTLE MUSIC.
DO YOU LIKE MUSIC?

Kate sits on the couch. Johnny sits next to her.

Kate narrates
I HAD TO STALL FOR TIME.

The scene changes to Lisa outside rolling out wire.

Back in the house Kate says SO WHAT KIND OF
MUSIC DO YOU LIKE?

Johnny says LITTLE DANCING MUSIC
WOULD BE ALL RIGHT BY ME.

Kate narrates OH, TERRIFIC.

Johnny says HA HA!

The scene changes to Lisa. She glances over her shoulder looking unsure. A moment later, she shrieks.

Back in the house, Johnny says WHAT'S THAT?

AJ says LISA.
COME ON.

The boys get up to exit the house.

Johnny looks at Kate and says I WANT YOU TO SIT
TIGHT, OR ELSE.

As the boys exit the house they trip over the stairs and fall forward. Lisa gestures to Kate from a window. Kate locks the front door and climbs out the window in the living room. The boy approach the locked door.

A moment later, the girls are shown running across the lawn.

Lisa says WATCH OUT
FOR THE WIRE.

They jump over the wire fence Lisa laid out. Kate and Lisa climb into the truck. Lisa turns the key but the engine stalls.

Kate hisses
LISA, THEY'RE COMING.

Lisa says I ALREADY
THOUGHT OF THAT.

Johnny and AJ rush towards the truck and trip over the wire.

Kate exclaims
LISA, HURRY, START
IT, COME ON, LET'S GO.

Lisa turns the key again. The engine hesitates.

Lisa tries again and says OH, IT WORKED.

Kate exclaims
LET'S GET
OUT OF HERE.

The girls drive off.

Johnny screams
I WANT MY TRUCK BACK!

Johnny pushes AJ.

AJ shouts
I DIDN'T LEAVE THE
KEYS IN YOUR TRUCK!

The boys continue to wrestle.

The scene turns to Lisa and Kate driving away.

Kate says LISA, I TAKE IT BACK.
EVERYTHING I SAID.
YOU'RE A MINI GENIUS.

Lisa says YOU KNOW, IT'S AMAZING WHAT
YOU CAN COME UP WITH IF YOU
JUST TAKE THE TIME
TO THINK THINGS OUT,
YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?
I MEAN, FIRST I THOUGHT
MAYBE I'D SET FIRE TO THE
BACK OF THE HOUSE BUT
THEN I THOUGHT, NO,
I MIGHT BURN YOU UP.
BUT THEN I THOUGHT THE REST
OF THE PLAN WORKED OUT WELL.
FIRST I GAVE THAT GREAT
SCREAM OUTSIDE THE HOUSE.
THAT MADE THEM
COME RUNNING OUT.
THEN I PUT THE OIL ON THE
STAIRS SO THEY SLIPPED ALL
OVER THAT, AND THAT REALLY
SLOWED THEM UP A LOT.
THEN THE TRIP WIRE,
EVERYTHING WORKED SO WELL.
IT WAS SO GREAT.
I'M SO SMART.

Kate narrates WELL, WHAT
COULD I SAY?

Kate laughs.

A black slate appears. It reads "Alternate Route: Thinking."
Music plays as the end credits roll.
