The title of the episode reads "Side by Side. Prejudice."

Nancy unloads her car trunk as Jen cleans the windows of a hair salon.

Nancy is in her late teens, with long curly black hair in a half-do. She wears jeans, a cream top with white rims, a cream unbuttoned shirt and a chain necklace.

Jen is in her late teens, with long slightly wavy blond hair in a low ponytail. She wears denim overalls and plaid shirt.

Nancy says WELL, I WANT TO GET
BACK TO MY PROM DRESS.
I WAS ABOUT TO START
PUTTING IT TOGETHER.

Jen says OH, REALLY?
SO THEN WHAT HAPPENED?

Nancy says WELL, BRENDA SAID
THERE WEREN'T ENOUGH SENIORS
WORKING ON THE PROM
DECORATING COMMITTEE
AND THEY'D NEVER
FINISH IN TIME.

Jen says AND?

Nancy says SO I TOLD HER WE'D
VOLUNTEER TO HELP OUT.

Jen says THAT'S RIGHT, 'WE'.
THAT'S TERRIFIC, NANCE.
Nancy says AH, COME ON, JEN, I
THOUGHT IT'D BE FUN.
AND BESIDES, RICHARD'S
A SENIOR AND I FIGURED
YOU WOULDN'T MIND DOING
SOMETHING NICE FOR HIM.

Jen says NANCY, I JUST MET HIM.

Nancy says YOU'D NEVER KNOW THE
WAY YOU ACT AROUND HIM.

Jen says YEAH, WELL, IT'S NOT
LIKE WE DON'T HAVE MUCH
TO DO AROUND HERE.

Nancy picks up a pile of boxes and says HEY, JEN, HELP!
[chuckling]

Jen helps her with the boxes and says NANCY.

Nancy says THANKS.

Jen says YOU IN SOME
KIND OF HURRY?

Nancy says I WANT TO GET BACK
TO MY PROM DRESS.
HEY, CAN YOU COME
UP AND SEE IT?

Jen says OH, I GOT TO
FINISH FIRST.

Nancy says WELL COME WHEN YOU'RE
DONE THEN, OKAY?

Jen says YEAH, SURE.

(music plays)

Jen goes inside the salon.

[door opens-closes]

Jen’s mom is doing a client’s hair.

She has long wavy blond hair in a bun and she wears a smock.

Mom says RICHARD CALLED.

Jen says MOM, WHY DIDN'T
YOU CALL ME?

Mom says I DIDN'T SEE YOU, AND
HE WAS IN A HURRY.
HE SAID HE'D TALK
TO YOU TOMORROW.
DO YOU THINK IT
WAS ABOUT THE PROM?

Jen shrugs, raises her eyebrows and pouts. Then sighs and goes outside.

[sighing]

(music plays)

She walks to the store next door, Nancy’s parents’ toy store.

Missus Pong is in her forties, with mid-length wavy black hair with bangs. She wears cream shirt.

Jen says HI, MISSUS PONG.

Missus Pong says HI, JEN.
GO ON UP.

Jen says OKAY.
HI, MISTER PONG.

Mister pong is in his forties, clean-shaven and with short wavy black hair. He wears a glasses and a blue Polo-shirt.

Mister Pong says HI, JEN.

(music plays)

Jen says HI, EUGENE.

Eugene is in his early twenties, with short curly black hair. He wears a red and white striped T-shirt.

He says HI.

(music plays)

Jen goes up to Nancy’s room.

Nancy is sawing.

Jen says HI.

Nancy says HI.

Jen says BOY, YOUR BROTHER SURE
IS FRIENDLY, YOU KNOW?

Nancy says OH, FORGET HIM.
HE'S A GROUCH THESE
DAYS, JUST LIKE MY DAD.
NOW ME, I TAKE
AFTER MOM.

Jen says YEAH, YOUR
MOM'S GREAT.
OH, NANCY, THIS IS
REALLY BEAUTIFUL.

Nancy says THANKS.
I THOUGHT THE BLUE WOULD
LOOK GOOD AGAINST YOUR
BURGUNDY DRESS...
AND SO WILL THIS.

She shows Jen a golden necklace.

Nancy says AH.
YOU LIKE IT?

Jen says OH, NANCY, YOU
SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE THIS.

Nancy says HEY, PENNY WANTS TO KNOW
WHERE YOU AND RICHARD
WANT TO GO FOR DINNER
BEFORE THE PROM.
COULD WE GET THEM TOGETHER
ONE NIGHT THIS WEEK?

Jen says YEAH, SURE.

Nancy arrives at the school cafeteria.

A boy says SO WHERE ARE YOU TAKING
THE GIRLS BEFORE THE PROM?

Nancy approaches Kenny and says WELL, YOU CAN'T TALK
TO HIM RIGHT NOW.

Kenny is in his late teens, with short wavy black hair. He wears jeans and a red T-shirt.

Kenny says SO THAT'S RICHARD.

They spot Richard hugging Jen.

Richard is in his late teens, with short curly blond hair. He wears a white shirt.

(music plays)
[chuckling]

Nancy says UH-HUH.
THAT'S RICHARD.

Brenda is in her late teens, with short curly brown hair. She wears jeans and a striped T-shirt.

Brenda says HEY, NANCY, WHERE'S
YOUR OTHER HALF?
WHERE'S JENNIFER AT?

Nancy says OH, SHE'S BUSY.

Brenda says WELL, WE GOT A LOT
OF STUFF TO DO.
LET'S GO FIND
HER, OKAY?

Nancy says SEE YOU, KENNY.

Brenda says WE'RE RUNNING BEHIND
SCHEDULE, YOU KNOW.
HELP ME WITH THIS
THING, WILL YOU?

Nancy overhears a conversation between Richard and Jen.

Richard says WELL, YOU SURE
WANTED TO DO IT BEFORE.

Jen says WELL, WHY DIDN'T YOU
TELL ME THE FIRST TIME
YOU BROUGHT IT UP THAT
NANCY COULDN'T GET IN?

Richard says I DIDN'T
THINK ABOUT IT.

Jen says WELL, THAT'S
JUST GREAT.

Richard says LOOK, JEN, THERE'S
NOTHING MY DAD CAN DO
ABOUT THE RULES.
IT'S JUST THAT
SOME PEOPLE...

Jen says LIKE NANCY AND KENNY?

Richard says LIKE NANCY AND KENNY,
ARE JUST NOT ALLOWED IN.
THAT'S HOW THE
COUNTRY CLUB IS.

Jen says YEAH, WELL I DIDN'T
THINK
YOU
WERE LIKE THAT.

Richard says WELL, I GUESS YOU FOUND
THE CHINK IN MY ARMOUR.

Jen laughs.

Richard says COME ON, JENNIFER, IT WOULD
PUT A WHOLE NEW SLANT
ON THE DINNER PARTY.
I MEAN, HOW YOU FEEL
WHEN YOU TAKE OFF SHOE
AND SIT ON FLOOR?

Jen says RICHARD, THAT'S NOT
FUNNY AND BESIDES,
YOU'VE PUT ME IN
AN AWFUL SPOT.

Richard kisses her and says JEN, I DID
WHAT I COULD.
NOW, DO YOU WANT
TO GO OR NOT?
IT'LL BE OKAY.

Brenda says NANCY, DON'T LET HER
GET AWAY WITH THAT.

Nancy says NO.
I'LL HANDLE IT.

(music plays)

Nancy takes a walk outside. She walks past some little girls playing rope.

A girl says TED, TED
TURNED ON RED.
TED, TED TOUCH
THE GROUND.
TED...

(music plays)

Old pictures of Jen and Nancy appear on screen.

Nancy says NO, IT'S JENNIFER'S.
KEEP TURNING.
REMEMBER, YOU
HAD A TURN.

Jen says YEAH.

Nancy says YOU'LL GET ONE LATER.
COME ON, JENNIFER.

(music plays)

Nancy spots Jen’s mom trying to open the salon door with her hands full of groceries. She gives her a hand with the bags.

Jen’s mom says THANKS.
HEY, NANCY, WHY
DON'T YOU COME IN?
JEN'LL BE HOME SOON.

Nancy says UH, NO.
I GOT TO GO.

In Nancy’s bedroom, Missus Pong says BUT WHY?
TELL ME WHY.

Nancy says MOM, IT'S BECAUSE
I'M CHINESE.
I DON'T KNOW
WHAT TO DO.

Eugene says WELL I KNOW
WHAT YOU CAN DO.

Nancy says WHAT?
LIKE YOU USED TO, GETTING
IN FIGHTS ALL THE TIME?

Eugene says YEAH, WELL WHEN YOU'RE A
KID AND YOU GET TIRED OF
BEING DUMPED ON, YOU
LEARN TO FIGHT BACK
INSTEAD OF
CRAWLING, LIKE YOU!

Nancy says HMM, I REALLY
NEED THIS.
LOOK, I CAN DEAL
WITH MY OWN FRIEND!

Eugene says FACE IT, NANCY,
YOUR REAL FRIENDS
DON'T LOOK
LIKE JENNIFER.

Missus Pong says THAT'S
ENOUGH, YOUNG MAN.
JUST LEAVE US ALONE.
NANCY, LISTEN TO ME.
THERE ARE ALWAYS GOING TO BE
PEOPLE LIKE THIS RICHARD.
YOU JUST HAVE TO LEARN TO
BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE.

Nancy says BUT JENNIFER...

Missus Pong says NOW, LISTEN TO ME.
YOU HAVE TO TALK TO HER.

(music plays)

Nancy decorates the school windows.

Brenda comes in and says HEY, LOOK, I'LL
TALK TO YOU LATER, OKAY?

A boy says OKAY.

Another boy says LATER, BREN.

Brenda says WORKING OVERTIME, HUH?

Nancy says NO, JUST HIDING.

Brenda says YOU KNOW YOU ONLY
GOT THREE MORE DAYS
TO DEAL WITH THIS.

Nancy says OH, BRENDA, I DON'T
EVEN WANT TO GO TO
THE STUPID PROM.

Brenda says THAT'S RIGHT,
PUNISH YOURSELF.
LOOK, NANCY, YOU'RE
NOT THE PROBLEM.
SHE'S THE PROBLEM.

Jen says HEY, NANCY!
NANCE, WHERE YOU
HAVE YOU BEEN?

Nancy turns around and gives Jen a dirty look.

Nancy says BUSY.

(music plays)

Brenda says I'LL SEE YA.

(music plays)

At the hair salon, Jen’s mom is on the phone.

She says OKAY, TOMORROW
AFTERNOON, 4:30.
BYE-BYE.
[door squeaks open]

Jen comes in.

Mom says YOU'RE AWFUL QUIET.
YOU TOLD NANCY.

Jen says NO.
SHE ACTED SO FUNNY.
SHE COULDN'T HAVE
HEARD ANYTHING.

Mom says OH, SHE
PROBABLY DIDN'T.

Jen says MAYBE I SHOULD
JUST MEET RICHARD
AFTER THE DINNER.

Mom says JENNIFER, IS THAT
WHAT YOU WANT TO DO?

Jen says NO.
YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I
WANT TO GO TO THIS.

Mom says WELL THEN, TELL
NANCY THAT.

Jen says OH, COME ON, MOM.

Mom says RICHARD IS A VERY
SPECIAL BOY, JEN.
YOU CAN'T GO THROUGH LIFE
SHUTTING OUT SPECIAL PEOPLE
JUST BECAUSE MAYBE THEY
DON'T LIKE A FRIEND OF YOURS.

Jen says IT'S NOT THAT HE
DOESN'T LIKE HER.
IT'S JUST BECAUSE...

Mom says JENNIFER, YOU'RE
NOT LIKE THAT.
NANCY WILL UNDERSTAND.

Richard meets Nancy outside Jen’s house.

Richard says WELL, IF IT ISN'T
LITTLE SUZY WONG.

Nancy turns around and walks past her brother.

Jen’s mom says IT'S NICE TO HAVE
YOU DROP BY, RICHARD.
I'M GOING TO LEAVE
YOU TWO ALONE.

Jen says OKAY, MOM.
I DIDN'T EXPECT YOU.

Richard says I MISSED YOU.
WE ALL SET
FOR SATURDAY?

Jen says NO.

Richard says YOU'RE NOT SERIOUS?

Jen says RICHARD, I JUST WANT TO
GO TO A NICE RESTAURANT
SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Richard says JENNIFER, THIS IS MY
GRADUATION AND MY SENIOR
PROM, SO IT'S MY
DINNER PARTY.

Jen says AND NANCY IS
MY
FRIEND.

Richard says LOOK, JENNIFER, 10 OF US
ARE GOING TO THE CLUB
FOR DINNER.
IF YOU WANT TO
MAKE IT NINE...

He kisses her on the forehead and says I'LL COME BY
TOMORROW.
[door opens-closes]

Eugene sees Nancy tearing up a picture of her and Jen and crying in her bedroom.

(music plays)

In the salon, Jen says OKAY, THANK
YOU VERY MUCH.

A customer says THANKS.
[door opens-closes]
MOM, I'M GOING
OVER TO NANCY'S.
IF RICHARD COMES,
HAVE HIM WAIT, OKAY?

Mom says BUT WHAT'LL
I TELL HIM?

Jen says JUST TELL HIM I
WANT TO TALK TO HIM.
[door creaks open]

Jen enters the toy store and says HI, MISSUS PONG, IS
NANCY UPSTAIRS?

Missus Pong says ER, YEAH,
GO ON UP.

Eugene gives her a dirty look.
Nancy is in the kitchen with two other girls.

One of the girls says REMEMBER HE'S ABOUT
THIS TALL WITH ROUND,
FUNNY GLASSES.

Nancy says OH, I REMEMBER HIM.

The other girl says AND HE USED TO GET
YOUR BROTHER IN TROUBLE
ALL THE TIME.
[laughing]

Jen arrives and says I'M SORRY, NANCE,
I'LL COME BACK LATER.

Missus Pong says GIRLS, WHERE ARE
YOUR MANNERS?
NANCY, GET JENNIFER
SOMETHING TO EAT.
COME ON, JEN,
SIT DOWN.

Richard leaves the hair salon and spots Eugene looking inside his car.

Richard says LOOKING FOR SOMETHING?

Eugene says YOU GOTTA
MOVE THIS.
YOU'RE IN MY WAY.

Richard says IN A FEW MINUTES.
YOU CAN WAIT.

Eugene says NO, NOW.
YOU CAN USE A
PARKING SPACE.
IT'S JUST A LITTLE RULE
WE HAVE AROUND HERE.

Richard says GET LOST, BOY.

Eugene says I'LL MOVE IT
MYSELF THEN.

Richard says HEY, GET OUT
OF THERE!
I SAID GET
OUT OF THERE!

[punch]

Eugene arrives home with a black eye and a bleeding mouth.

Nancy says EUGENE, WHAT
HAPPENED?

Eugene says I'M ALL RIGHT.
JUST HELPING YOUR
BOYFRIEND MOVE HIS CAR.
[panting]

Jen storms out.

Nancy runs after her.

Nancy says LOSE SOMETHING,
JENNIFER?

Jen says NANCY, I WAS JUST...

Nancy says WHEN WERE YOU GOING
TO TELL ME ABOUT IT,
THE NIGHT OF
THE PROM?

Jen says NO.

Nancy says OR NOT AT ALL?

Jen says I WAS COMING OVER
TO TELL YOU NOW.

Nancy says OH, THAT'S
JUST GREAT!
YOU CAME OVER TO TELL ME
THAT I'M NOT GOOD ENOUGH
FOR YOU AND THAT
BIGOTED BOYFRIEND!

Jen shakes her and says LISTEN TO ME!
I WASN'T GOING TO
GO TO THE DINNER!
I WAS GOING TO TELL RICHARD
IF YOU COULDN'T GO,
THEN NEITHER WOULD I.

Nancy says WELL, IT'S REAL EASY
TO SAY THAT NOW!

Jen says NANCY, PLEASE
BELIEVE ME.

Jen tears up. Nancy goes inside.
