An animated map of North America divided into the states and provinces of the United States and Canada appears on screen against a blue background. Individual states and provinces are coloured in red.

The announcer says THE FOLLOWING
COOPERATIVE PROJECT IS
SUPPORTED BY STATE AND
PROVINCIAL AGENCIES
WORKING THROUGH THE AGENCY
FOR INSTRUCTIONAL TELEVISION.

The screen fades to black and a yellow title swirls in the middle that reads "On The Level."

The opening scene features a boat harbour. At sunrise, a large blue and white boat comes into port.
[birds chirping]

A man on the boat says OKAY, LET'S TIE
IT UP AND GET READY.
[horn honking]
[car door shutting]

Now Bethel leans into a black car with a white roof and hands a drink to sleeping Javier. Bethel is in his twenties, has bouncy, dark brown curly hair, is clean-shaven, and wears a black and white plaid shirt, and jeans. Hector is in his twenties, has short, dark brown hair, is clean-shaven, and wears a gray button down shirt with a gold cross necklace.

Bethel says HEY.
COME ON, HECTOR.
BETHEL SALAZAR'S FOOLPROOF
REMEDY FOR HANGOVERS.

Bethel hands Hector a V-8 juice can.

Hector pushes it away and says NAH.

Suddenly, Javier walks out from a garage and says HECTOR!
BETHEL!

Bethel stands, hides the juice can behind his back, and Javier yells. Javier is in his forties, has short, black hair, a black goatee, and wears a white shirt, and a black apron.

Javier continues BETHEL, THE BOATS ARE HERE.
BETHEL SALAZAR, DO I PAY
YOU TO STAND AROUND
AND SHINE YOUR CAR?

Bethel says OH, NO,
TIO JAVIER.
I'LL GET TO WORK.

Bethel pushes Hector’s head down in the car.

Javier says WHERE IS YOUR
FRIEND IN CRIME, HECTOR?

Bethel says HECTOR?
OH, HE'S LONG GONE.
HE'S ALREADY AT THE BOAT.

Javier says HMM.
GOOD.
[car door opening]

Bethel says STAND UP, MANO.

Bethel helps Hector out of the car and says TRY TO LOOK SOBER.
WE DON'T WANT THEM TO KNOW
WE WERE OUT ALL NIGHT.
[boat horn honking]

They both walk out to the boat.

Hector says I'M TRYING.
I'M TRYING.

The episode title appears on screen and reads "A Little Help from My Friends, FRIENDSHIP."

Bethel says WELL, DO WHAT YOU
CAN AND I'LL COVER FOR YOU.

Now Hector and Bethel wear leather aprons by the loading dock and carry a gray tray full of fish.

Hector says THANKS.
BETHEL, CAN YOU SAVE THE
RABBIT FOOD FOR LATER, HUH?

Bethel says I CAN'T.
IT'S HOW I STAY
IRRESISTIBLE.

Hector says WHY DO YOU NEED
TO BE IRRESISTIBLE?
YOU'VE ALREADY GOT
A NUMBER ONE GIRL.

Bethel says TRUE, BUT I CAN'T
FORGET ABOUT NUMBERS TWO
THROUGH 99, CAN I?
[birds chirping]
[chuckling]

Bethel says WHAT DO YOU HEAR
FROM JOLI GONZALEZ?

Hector says THE SAME
THING, NOTHING.

Bethel says WELL, WHY DON'T YOU
ASK HER TO GERALDO'S PARTY?

Hector says SHE'D NEVER GO.

Bethel says PARTY'S IN TWO WEEKS.
GIVES US 14 DAYS TO PUT
SOME MUSCLES ON YOU.

Hector says BETHEL, COME ON!

Bethel stops holding the bin, looks at his reflection in his sunglasses, and says JOGGING, LITTLE
BIT OF WEIGHT LIFTING.
[panting]

Bethel says OH.

Hector drops the bin of fish and Bethel helps him put the fish back.

Hector says OH, GOD.
[laughter]

Now Bethel and Hector bring the fish into a restaurant.

Bethel says TIME FOR LUNCH?

Hector says UH-HUH.

Hector shoves his plate into Bethel’s face and Bethel says HECTOR, HOW DO YOU
EXPECT TO GET INTO SHAPE
WITH ALL THAT JUNK FOOD?
[car horn honking]

A woman in her twenties with short, side-parted dark brown hair cut in the shape of a bob drives a white car and stops in front of them.

The woman says EXCUSE ME.
I'M LOOKING FOR SAN
PEDRO BOULEVARD.
CAN EITHER OF
YOU GUYS HELP ME?
YEAH, HI.

Bethel runs over and says SAN PEDRO
BOULEVARD, HUH?

The woman says YEAH, I'M
REALLY LOST.

Bethel says AH, WELL I CAN
HELP YOU, NO PROBLEM.

The woman CAN YOU?

Bethel runs back to Hector and grabs his things.

Bethel says YEAH, SURE.
HEY, I'M GOING TO GO SHOW HER
HOW TO GET WHERE SHE'S GOING.

Hector says HEY.
NO WAY, I SAY.

Bethel says BUT SHE'LL GET LOST.

Hector says AND WHAT DO I TELL
TIO JAVIER WHEN HE ASKS ME
WHERE YOU'RE AT?

Bethel says HE WON'T MISS ME.

Hector says TERESA GETS
OFF WORK AT TWO.
SHE'LL BE HERE IN A MINUTE.

Bethel says WELL YOU'LL
THINK OF SOMETHING.

Hector says YOU MEAN LIE FOR YOU?

Bethel says COVERING FOR YOUR
BUDDY IS NOT LYING, MANO.
BE BACK IN 30 MINUTES.

Bethel looks at the woman and the woman smiles back.

Hector says HOW'S TERESA
GOING TO FEEL?

Bethel says YOU'LL
TAKE CARE OF IT.

Bethel hops in the woman’s car.

Now Teresa appears on screen driving a white Volkswagen. She is in her twenties, has shoulder-length, curly brown hair, and wears a white dress. Teresa drives by and sees Bethel in the other woman’s car.

Now Teresa walks over to Hector as he puts on rubber boots.

Hector says AH.

Teresa says HI, HECTOR.

Hector says HI, TERESA.

Teresa says WHERE'S BETHEL GOING?

Hector says WHO?

Teresa says ALL RIGHT,
WHO'S HE WITH NOW?

Javier walks out of the storage and says HECTOR!
HECTOR!
TERESA, HAVE YOU SEEN
THAT GOOD-FOR-NOTHING
NEPHEW OF MINE?

Hector shakes his head at her and she shakes her head no.

Javier walks over to Hector and says HECTOR, WHERE
IS BETHEL?

Hector says UH,
WHERE IS BETHEL?
WHERE IS BETHEL?
UH, YOU WANT TO KNOW
WHERE BETHEL IS.
BETHEL IS, UH... MAKING
A SPECIAL DELIVERY.

Javier says WHEN HE COME
BACK, SEND HIM TO ME.

Javier walks back inside.

Hector says I'M
SORRY, TERESA.

Teresa says IT'S
ALL RIGHT.

Teresa walks away.

Now Hector stands on the dock alone and throws his rubber gloves on the dock.
[rushing water]
[boat horn]

Later Bethel talks to Hector as he piles fish into a box.

Bethel says DON'T WORRY ABOUT
THE OLD MAN OR TERESA.
HEY, I CAN HANDLE THEM.

Hector says THEN DO IT!
I'M TIRED OF
LYING FOR YOU.

Bethel says LET ME HELP YOU BEFORE
YOU BUST A GUT OR SOMETHING.

Hector says HEY, I'VE GOT IT.

Bethel says HEY, COME ON,
WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?

Hector says JUST GO FIND
SOMETHING ELSE TO DO, BETHEL.

Bethel says OKAY.
I'M GUILTY.
I ADMIT IT.
COME ON.
COME ON.
[chuckling]

Bethel hits Hector’s chest and they arm wrestle. Hector pushes Bethel into a pile of boxes.

Bethel says FRIENDS?

Hector says OKAY.
BUT FROM NOW ON,
YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN.

Later that night at a party, Bethel and Hector stand next to a white chimney in a living room and Teresa walks over with a white tray serving food.
[music and chatter]

Teresa says CAN I GET
YOU GUYS ANYTHING?

Hector says NO.

Bethel says NO THANKS,
IT'S OKAY.

Bethel kisses Teresa and she walks away.

Hector hits Bethel’s chest and says I CAN'T
DO IT, BETHEL.
TERESA BOUGHT THOSE
TICKETS TWO WEEKS AGO.

Bethel says WHAT ARE
YOU, MY MOTHER?

Hector says BUT YOU'RE
THE ONE WHO WANTED
TO GO TO THAT CONCERT
TOMORROW NIGHT.

Bethel says HEY, GET
OFF MY BACK, HUH?
I'M NOT ASKING YOU FOR YOUR
HELP OR YOUR ADVICE ANYMORE.
[chatter]

Bethel walks over to Teresa and says YOU WANT
TO DANCE, TERESA?

Teresa says SURE.

They start dancing.

Bethel says LISTEN, ABOUT THE
CONCERT TOMORROW NIGHT,
I CAN'T MAKE IT.
SOMETHING'S COME UP.
I'M SORRY.

Teresa pushes him away and says FORGET IT.

Teresa walks furiously into the kitchen and Irma walks out. Irma is in her twenties, has short, shoulder-length brown hair, and wears a green and white dress.

Bethel says IRMA, YOU
WANT TO DANCE?

Irma says SURE.

They start dancing and Hector sits in a floral armchair.

Later on, Hector knocks on Teresa’s door and hides a white flower behind his back.
[birds chirping]
[knocking]

Teresa opens the door and says HI, HECTOR.

Hector gives her the flower and says HI, TERESA.

Teresa says YOU'RE A REAL FRIEND.

Teresa and Hector walk down the porch stairs.

Hector says IT REALLY BUGS ME THE
WAY BETHEL TREATS HIS FRIENDS.

Teresa says YEAH,
TELL ME ABOUT IT.

Later, Bethel and Hector finish playing basketball and Bethel says AND YOU TOLD
HER ABOUT RHONDA?
WHAT ARE YOU, CRAZY?
[panting]

Hector says LET ME TELL YOU, YOU
DUMPED ON HER ONCE TOO OFTEN.

Bethel tosses Hector the ball as he gets into their car and says OH, MAN.
DON'T MANITO ME.
MAN, YOU'RE A TRAITOR.

Hector throws the ball back and says I DON'T LIE TO YOU,
AND I DON'T LIE TO HER.
[panting]

Bethel throws the ball in the car and says YOU'RE NUTS.

Later on, Hector loads boxes into a truck and Bethel speaks to Teresa on the other side.

Bethel says COME
ON, TERESA.

Teresa says NO, BETHEL.

Bethel says JUST GIVE
ME ONE MORE CHANCE.
I DON'T WANT
TO LOSE YOU.

Teresa says IF YOU LIE TO
ME AGAIN, IT'S OVER.

Bethel hugs Teresa and says IT'LL NEVER
HAPPEN AGAIN, I KNOW IT.
I LOVE YOU,
TERESA.

Javier says HECTOR!
BETHEL!
COME HERE.

Bethel kisses Teresa and Bethel and Hector run into the storage house after Javier.

Javier continues A NEW ACCOUNT IN
L.A. AND A BIG ONE.
I WANT YOU TO SCRUB THE TRUCK
DOWN, GAS HER UP AND GET IT
READY TO PACK BY SEVEN
TOMORROW MORNING.

Both say YES, SIR.

Javier says I GAVE THEM MY
PERSONAL GUARANTEE THAT
EVERYTHING WILL BE
FIRST CLASS AND FRESH.
DON'T LET ME DOWN.

Both say YES, SIR.

Javier says I EXPECT YOU
HERE AT 5 says 5 A.M.
SO YOU BETTER TAKE THE
REST OF THE DAY OFF.
YES?
YOU HEAR WELL.
COME ON, WHAT ARE
YOU WAITING FOR?
[laughter]

Javier says GET OUT OF HERE.
HAVE SOME FUN.

Now Hector and Bethel run down a sand dune to the rocky beach.
[chuckling]
[birds squawking]
[waves splashing]

They take off their shirts and run straight into the waves with blue bathing suits.

On shore, Joli says HI, HECTOR.
[splashing waves]

Joli is in her twenties, has short, brown hair in a ponytail, and wears a brown and white one-piece swimsuit.

Later, Hector runs over and says UP, UP, BETHEL.
BETHEL, HEY, HEY, BETHEL.
HEY, JOLI GONZALEZ, SHE'S HERE.
AND I'M LEAVING WITH HER.

Bethel says WELL WHAT DID
I TELL YOU, HECTOR?

Hector says I'M GOING TO TAKE HER
OUT ON THE TOWN TONIGHT, LATE
NIGHT, SO COVER FOR ME IF I'M
NOT THERE TOMORROW AT FIVE.

Bethel says OH, HEY, MAN.

Hector says BETHEL,
YOU OWE ME ONE.
YOU MY FRIEND OR NOT?

Bethel says ALL RIGHT,
ALL RIGHT.

Hector says PROMISE?

Bethel says I PROMISE.

They shake hands and Bethel sunbathes.

Hector says ALL RIGHT!
[laughter]

The next day, Hector runs over to the loading truck.

Hector says BETHEL!

Hector says BETHEL!
BE... THEL.

Javier loads boxes and says HECTOR,
COME BACK HERE.

Hector says I'M SORRY
I'M LATE, SIR.

Javier says TWO HOURS LATE.

Hector says UM, I'LL
MAKE UP FOR IT.

Javier says I DIDN'T EXPECT
YOU TO DO THIS TO ME.
I GAVE HIM MY
PERSONAL GUARANTEE.

Hector says I'M REALLY VERY SORRY.

Javier says YOU ARE FIRED,
THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE!

Hector says BUT, BUT TIO,
BUT I NEED THIS JOB.

Javier says I KNOW
YOU NEED THE JOB!
YOU NEED FIRING!

Bethel pulls up in his car.

Bethel says HECTOR.
TIO JAVIER,
SORRY I'M LATE.

Javier says THIS IS THE LAST
TIME YOU LET ME DOWN.
YOU'RE FIRED!

Bethel says WHAT?

Javier says BOTH OF YOU!
[birds chirping]

Hector and Javier walk down the dock and Hector says I SET THE
ALARM FOR 4:30,
BUT I NEVER
HEARD IT GO OFF.

Bethel says THESE THINGS
HAPPEN, YOU KNOW?
SOMETIMES, THAT'S JUST
THE WAY IT GOES, HECTOR.
LOOK AT IT
THIS WAY...
NOW WE HAVE THE REST
OF SUMMER VACATION.

Hector says I GOTTA START LOOKING
FOR ANOTHER JOB TODAY.

Bethel says HEY, COMPADRE,
I'M REALLY SORRY ABOUT HOW
IT WORKED OUT, YOU KNOW?
BUT YOU KNOW HOW I AM.

Hector says YEAH, I KNOW
HOW YOU ARE, COMPADRE.
[splash]

Hector pushes Bethel into the water.

Bethel says WHAT
ARE YOU, CRAZY?
[splashing]
WHAT DO YOU THINK
YOU'RE DOING?
HECTOR!
COME BACK HERE, MAN!
HECTOR!

Hector walks off the dock.

The show ends and the title reads "A Little Help from My Friends, FRIENDSHIP."
