Against a black screen, the MK2 Mile End logo appears. Then, a sign that reads "Neon" flashes red.

Three Sundance logos appear.

[wind blowing]
(mystical music plays)

An aerial view shows Hatidze Muratoya with a yellow shirt, a green headscarf with flowers and a long patterned brown skirt walking up the edge of a mountain. She is in her mid fifties.

[rock breaking and bees buzzing] With a bee hat now, Hatidze removes a honeycomb from a side of the mountain and wraps it in a cloth.

Then, in a path by a tree, she calls the bees holding a type of ball.

Now, Hatidze feeds a dog outside her cave-like hut in the desolate countryside.

Hatidze says JACKIE YOU'RE GREEDY.
One-eyed Nazife sits in a dark room eating. She is in her eighties with a headscarf. Hatidze sits next to her.

Hatidze says EAT SLOWLY!
Nazife says EH?

Hatidze says AND STRETCH YOUR LEGS OUT.
I SAID 'STRETCH' THEM OUT.
AND EAT PROPERLY.
STRETCH.
STRETCH YOUR LEGS
OUT LIKE THIS, MUM.
JUST STRETCH THEM OUT
STRETCH THEM OUT, WOMAN!
STRETCH.
Nazife says I CAN'T.
Angry, Hatidze says WHY NOT?
STRETCH THEM OUT.
Nazife says THEY HURT.
Hatidze says SO?
STRETCH THEM OUT.
OUT.
LIKE THAT.
OUT, SO THEY DON'T GO NUMB.
Nazife says I CAN'T.
Hatidze says OKAY, OKAY.
HAVE IT YOUR WAY.
THERE'S NO REASONING WITH YOU!

Nazife says THIS LEG MOVES SLOWLY.
Hatidze says OF COURSE
IT MOVES SLOWLY.
YOU MADE IT MOVE SLOWLY.
I SAID 'STRETCH'.
YOU DON'T LISTEN.
Nazife says OH DEAR...
I'M DYING FOR WATER.
MY DEAR DAUGHTER...
Hatidze places a lantern near Nazife.

Hatidze says MUM.
MUM.
Nazife says EH?
Hatidze says CAN YOU SEE THE LIGHT?
Nazife says I CAN.
THERE IT IS.
I CAN SEE WITH THIS EYE
BUT NOT WITH THE OTHER.
Hatidze says DO YOU WANT ME
TO TAKE YOU OUT
INTO THE SUN TOMORROW?
Nazife says I CAN'T GO OUT.
YOU CAN'T TAKE ME OUT.
I'VE BECOME LIKE A TREE.
I'M NOT DYING.
I'M JUST MAKING YOUR LIFE A MISERY.
NOT DYING.
AND I DON'T INTEND TO DIE.
I EAT BREAD. I DRINK WATER.
I EAT WHATEVER I WANT.
The next day, Hatidze checks the bees living among the stones of crumbling walls.

[bee smoker puffing and bees buzzing]
Hatidze says MASHALLAH! MASHALLAH!

She pours honey on a rock.

Talking to herself, she says ONE HALF FOR ME,
ONE HALF FOR YOU.

Bees gather in the spread honey.

Next, Hatidze feeds her mother.

Hatidze says TAKE A BIT.
A SPOONFUL OR TWO.
OPEN YOUR MOUTH.
Nazife says DON'T GIVE ME HONEY.
Hatidze says JUST A BIT.
IT'S HONEY. JUST HONEY.
TRY SOME. TRY IT.
JUST A BIT, WOMAN.
Nazife says WAIT.
I DON'T WANT TO.
Hatidze says A TINY BIT.
JUST A TINY BIT.
[flowing water and crickets chirping]
[train horn honking]

Hatidze takes the train to a city.
[traffic jam sound]
In a street market, Hatidze says I SELL IT FOR 16 EUROS.
IT'S STRAIGHT FROM THE BEEHIVE,
WITH HONEYCOMB IN IT.

Shop Seller 1 says VERY GOOD!
TASTE IT.
Hatidze says WHY IS YOURS SO CHEAP?
Shop Seller 1 says THE PRICES
ARE LOWER BECAUSE
THE DEMAND HAS FALLEN.
IT'S NOT SELLING WELL.
Hatidze says I SEE.
MINE SELLS WELL, EVEN
THOUGH IT'S MORE EXPENSIVE.
SOMETIMES UP TO 20 EUROS.
OTHER TIMES DOWN TO 10 OR 15.
ARE YOU BOSNIAN?
Shop Seller 1 says ALBANIAN ON
MY FATHER'S SIDE,
BOSNIAN ON MY MOTHER'S.
Hatidze says VERY GOOD.
ALL THE ALBANIANS AND TURKS
LEFT OUR VILLAGE
EXCEPT FOR US,
AND WE'RE TURKS.
I DON'T REMEMBER
THOSE FAMILIES.
I WAS BORN IN 1964.
RIGHT. RIGHT.
NOT ALL HONEY IS A REMEDY,
ESPECIALLY IF IT'S MIXED.
PEOPLE ADD SUGAR TO MAKE MORE
OF IT. BUT MINE IS RAW.
THANK YOU.
IT'S A RED HONEYCOMB,
MADE AS A CURE.

Shop Seller 2 says TO CURE?

Hatidze says YES, SPECIALLY MADE TO CURE.
Shop Seller 2 says VERY NICE.
Hatidze says WE'LL MAKE A DEAL,
DON'T WORRY.
NORMALLY IT'S 16 EUROS,
BUT I'LL CUT THE PRICE FOR YOU.
DON'T WORRY, I'LL LOWER
THE PRICE.
I HAVE PURE HONEY AT HOME.
ONLY IN WINTER, THOUGH.
I'LL COME BACK THEN.
AND I'LL BRING YOU A JAR
AS A PRESENT.
DON'T WORRY, I'LL FILTER IT.
FOR YOU TO PUT IN YOUR TEA
AND ENJOY.
THANK YOU.
Stall Seller says HAVE YOU FOUND
ANYTHING?
Hatidze says I'M LOOKING FOR HAIR DYE.
CHESTNUT COLOUR.
Stall Seller says CHESTNUT?
Hatidze says YES.
Stall Seller says THIS IS CHESTNUT.
Hatidze says THAT'S WHAT I NEED.
THIS IS A NICE ONE.
Stall Seller says YES, THAT ONE.
Hatidze says HOW MUCH IS IT?
Stall Seller says 2.5 EUROS.
Hatidze says THAT'S VERY EXPENSIVE, ISN'T I?
Stall Seller says TAKE THE CHESTNUT.
IT'S REALLY NICE.
Hatidze says YES, IT IS.
Stall Seller says THIS ONE'S NICE.
CHESTNUT.
Hatidze takes a silver fan.

Hatidze says I'LL BUY THIS TOO.
FOR MY MOTHER. SHE'S ILL.
SHE'S 85.
Stall Seller says HOW OLD? 85?
AND ILL, TOO?
Hatidze says FOUR YEARS IN BED NOW.
Stall Seller says DON'T PAY THEN.
IT'S FOR YOUR MOTHER.
MAY SHE BE SOUND AND SAFE.
IT'S A SOUVENIR FROM SKOPJE.
Hatidze says THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Back in her house, Hatidze says MUM.
GET UP.
GET UP.
I'M BACK FROM SKOPJE.
LET'S EAT.
Nazife says EH?
YOU WENT TO SKOPJE?
Hatidze says UH-HUH.
I WENT AND SOLD
SOME HONEY THERE.
Nazife says EH?
Hatidze says I WENT THERE
AND SOLD THE HONE.
Nazife says WHY?

Hatidze yells I WENT TO SELL SOME HONEY!

Nazife says AHA.
Hatidze says AND I BOUGHT
SOME BANANAS.
Nazife says WHAT'S THIS?
Hatidze says IT'S A FAN TO
COOL YOU DOWN
AND CHASE THE FLIES AWAY.
THAT'S RIGHT.
Nazife coughs.

Hatidze says YOU'LL CHOKE!
WAIT A BIT.
TAKE IT EASY.
SMALLER BITES.
IS IT GOOD?
HOLD THIS AND FEEL.
CAN YOU FEEL IT?
Nazife says IT'S BEAUTIFUL.
Hatidze says IT'S A TAIL, MUM.
A PEACOCK'S TAIL!
BE CAREFUL NOT TO
POKE YOUR EYE.
WAIT. LIKE THIS.
NOT LIKE THAT.
YOU'LL POKE YOUR EYE OUT.
LIKE THIS.
THIS WAY MUM, THIS WAY.
Nazife says DID YOU SELL THE HONEY?
Hatidze says UH-HUH.

Nazife says HOW MUCH FOR?

Hatidze says AS MUCH AS I COULD.
TEN EUROS A JAR.
Nazife says EH?

Hatidze says TEN EUROS A JAR.
Later, Hatidze takes care of a conic structure with bees.

[truck rumbling]
[indistinct shouting]

A poor family with seven children arrives in a motor home. Hatidze observes them.

Hatidze says THEY'RE TURKISH.
[hammering and saying something indistinctly in the background]
Hussein builds a metal roof as Hatidze feeds Nazife.

Hatidze says OPEN YOUR MOUTH.
OPEN AGAIN.
[Children shouting and baby cry]
[cows mooing in the distance]
[Alcho saying something indistinctly]

Ljutvie calls the cows. She is in her forties, with brown tied-up hair. She wears a dark sweater and patterned trousers.
The kids and Ljutvie gather the cattle.

Ljutvie yells BRING IT HERE.
ALCHO!
TURN IT!
SO THEY CAN COME BACK.
[Agitated cow mooing]

One of the kids takes a calf.

[Hatidze shooing the calf]
[thundering]
[dog barking]
[baby crying and Hatidze singing]

As kids play in the background, Hatidze collects water. Then, she has fun with a little girl touching a calf.

Five year-old Gamze walks into Hatidze's house.

Hatidze says WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
DID YOU COME TO SEE MY MOTHER?
SHE'S ASLEEP.
SEE?
DO YOU WANT A KITTEN?
WANT TO TAKE ONE?
WHICH ONE DO YOU WANT?
WHITE? GINGER?
OR THIS ONE?
ARE WE GOING OUT?
YOU WANT TO STAY HERE
OR GO OUTSIDE?
EH?
WANT TO GO OUTSIDE?
LET'S GO.

Hatidze and Ljutvie sit on the ground near Alit and Gamze who are playing when Gamze falls onto a log. Alit is around 9 years old.

Ljutvie says WAY TO GO!
YOU'VE ALREADY BROKEN
SOMETHING?
Gamze holds her chest and cries.
Ljutvie says HE PUSHED HER AND
SHE FELL ON HER CHEST.

Alit says SHE FELL BY HERSELF
AND BROKE MY LEG.
Ljutvie says MAY YOUR HEAD FALL OFF, ALIT!

Hatidze says IT'S NOTHING. NOTHING.

Ljutvie says HE INJURED HER CHEST.

Hatidze says COME HERE, GAMZE, LET ME SEE.
GAMZE, COME! LET ME SEE YOU.

Ljutvie says SHE'S HURT BADLY.
DON'T MAKE A FUSS!
SHUT UP, WILL YOU!
JUST SHUT UP.
SEE WHAT HE DID.
YOU'LL GET WHAT'S COMING
TO YOU AT HOME!
YOU'VE NO IDEA WHAT'S
WAITING FOR YOU.
THIS STICK WILL
COME DOWN HARD ON YOU.
YOU'LL SEE AT HOME.
I'LL MAKE YOU BLACK AND
BLUE ALL OVER.
SO YOU FEEL HER PAIN.
Alit says SHE BROKE MY TEETH.
Ljutvie says I'LL KNOCK EVERY ONE OF
YOUR TEETH OUT. YOU'LL SEE.

Hussein and a few of his kids hammer something on a plate. Hussein is in his fifties, clean-shaven with graying hair. He wears a beige shirt and dark trousers.

Alit says I HIT MY HAND BADLY.
Hussein says BRING ANOTHER NAIL.

A kid says THERE. IT'S GOOD.
Hatidze and the family listen to the radio near a tree.

A Radio Host says CLOUDY WEATHER IN MACEDONIA WIH
MORE SUN IN THE SOUTH EAST... WITH MODERATE WINDS FROM
THE NORTH BECOMING STRONGER... ..TOMORROW IT WILL BE UNSTABLE
WITH...
[radio tuning]
Alit says IS IT A DIFFERENT STATION?
[radio playing music]

Hatidze says IT SAYS RADIO SKOPJE. LISTEN.
GO ON, SING.
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
COME ON.
COME ON.

Hatidze sings and dances for the kids. Then, she wings on a swing hanging from a tree.

Now, Hatidze washes her mother's face.

Hatidze says YOU'LL FEEL PRETTY.
A TREAT FOR YOUR HAIR TOO!
JUST A BIT.
[Nazife tapping her foot]

Hatidze places a bandage on her mother's face.

Hatidze says HOLD IT!
EASY!
I'LL GET YOU YOUR MEDICINE NOW.
AND A BANANA TO EAT.
Nazife says ONLY IF THERE ARE
STILL SOME LEFT.
Hatidze says THERE'S ONE LEFT.

Nazife says WHO BROUGHT THEM?
Hatidze says I BOUGHT THEM.
WHO ELSE?

Nazife says I'VE ALREADY EATEN.
Hatidze says JUST EAT! THERE ARE PLENTY OF
BANANAS
FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW.
THIS IS FOR TODAY,
THE REST ARE FOR TOMORROW.
I'LL BUY NEW ONES
WHEN I GO TO THE CITY.
Alit tries to catch a cow.

Alit says GO ON! STAY IN THERE!
SHE'S GETTING UP.
PRAY TO GOD IT'S NOT MALE.
HERE! HERE!

He checks a calf lying on the ground.

Alit says IT'S A MALE.
GET OUT OF HERE!
The cow licks the calf.

[cows mooing]
On another day, Hatidze kneels by her beehive wearing a bee hat. Hussein approaches her.

Hussein says WHAT ARE YOU
USING IN THE SMOKE?
Hatidze says DRY DUNG.
THE HONEYCOMB'S READY.
SOON THERE'LL BE LARVAE.

Hussein says ARE THOSE LARVAE?

Hatidze says I JUST APPLY A LAYER OF DUNG
AND THEY MAKE IT THEMSELVES.

Hussein says HOW MUCH HONEY
IS THERE? 20-30?

Hatidze says NO MATTER HOW
MUCH THERE IS -
THERE'S ENOUGH FOR ALL OF US.
Hussein says HOW MUCH
HONEY DOES
THIS HIVE MAKE?
Hatidze says IN A GOOD YEAR,
TEN KILOS.
DEPENDS ON THE YEAR
AND THE BEES.
ANYWAY I HAVE TO LEAVE
FIVE KILOS.

Hussein says I WANT TO, BUT...

Hatidze says IT'S STILL EARLY...
THERE'S HONEY NOW.
BUT BY SEPTEMBER IT'LL BE FULL.
EVEN NEXT MONTH IT WILL BE FULL.
Hussein says WHAT PRICE
DO YOU SELL IT FOR?
Hatidze says IN A GOOD YEAR,
TEN EUROS.

Hussein says WHEN DO YOU COLLECT IT?
Hatidze says THIS YEAR IN
SEPTEMBER OR OCTOBER.
IT DEPENDS ON THE WEATHER.
Ljutvie says MUSTAFA'S
CLOSED THE PLACE
OFF WELL. WE'LL PUT THEM THERE.
Hussein says YEAH.
AND THE WINDOWS ARE
ALL CLOSED UP?

Ljutvie says YES.
WHAT ABOUT THE BEEHIVES?
Hussein says IT'S CLEAN
AND CLOSED THERE.
WITH NO GARBAGE.
Ljutvie says NO GARBAGE
IS GOOD FOR THE BEES.
[boys fighting]
[cows mooing]
[children playing and shouting]
[truck rumbling and pump puffing]

The family builds a structure for their bees.

Hussein says COME.
YOU GO, AND I'LL DO THIS.
Ljutvie says TO THE TRUCK?
Hussein says GOOD. WE'LL PUT THIS HERE.
Mustafa says GIVE ME THE PUMP.
[child crying]
A child gets stung by a bee.

Mustafa and one of his brothers work with the bees.

Mustafa says THEY'LL STING US.
TURN IT.
Hussein says GAMZE, COME HERE!
BRING IT HERE! I'LL CUT IT HERE.
Mustafa says CLOSE IT TIGHT!
IT'LL STING AGAIN.
A bee stings a toddler.

Boy 1 says YOU WACKO!

Boy 2 says SHUT YOUR MOUTH!
GET LOST!
Ljutvie says WHERE?
A girl says HERE.

Ljutvie says WHERE IS THE BEE?
Ljutvie removes the bee from the toddler's neck.

Meanwhile, Hussein and two of his kids puff air to the bee racks.

Hussein says GOOD WEATHER
AND PLENTY OF SPACE HERE.
Hatidze says WILL YOU TAKE ALL OF IT?
Hussein says EH?
Hatidze says ARE YOU TAKING IT ALL?
Hussein says NO. JUST TWO
OR THREE FRAMES.
Hatidze says TAKE THAT RACK AND
LEAVE THE OTHERS... ..SO THEY DON'T COME
AND ATTACK MY BEES.
THERE'S ENOUGH FOR THEM
AND FOR YOU.

Hussein says THERE'S...
THERE'S PLENTY FOR EVERYBODY.
Hatidze says THESE ARE FULL.
YOU CAN COLLECT
THEM. THE OTHER ONES NEED TIME.
Hussein says SURE, THAT'S WHAT I'LL DO.
Hatidze says YOU TAKE HALF,
BUT YOU LEAVE HALF...
SO THEY DON'T ATTACK MY BEES.

Hatidze helps Hussein with his bees.

Puffing air, Hatidze says GO AWAY! AWAY! AWAY!
Next, Hussein and Hatidze by a bonfire.

Hatidze says NO MAN FROM SKOPJE
HAS EVER DONE ME WRONG.
I SAY TO MYSELF: "HE'S A MAN,
SO GIVE WAY A BIT."
Hussein says HE WANTED TO CONFUSE ME.
HE TOLD ME EACH FRAME
WAS A KILO AND A HALF.
I ASKED HIM: "WHO ARE YOU
TRYING TO MAKE A FOOL OF?"
Hatidze says DID YOU WEIGH THEM?
Hussein says NO, I DIDN'T.
HE CLAIMED HE'D WEIGHED THEM.

Hatidze says WHY DON'T YOU GET A SCALE?
Hussein says I DO HAVE ONE.
IT RUNS ON
BATTERIES AND IT BREAKS EASILY.
A DIGITAL SCALE.

Hatidze says WHEN I WEIGH,
IT'S ALWAYS PRECISE
MY MEASURES ARE ALWAYS
ACCURATE.

Hussein says NO MORE FROM NOW ON IT'S OVER.
ALL OF THEM
NEED SOMETHING...
GAMZE NEEDS 3 EUROS.
VELI NEEDS 7 EUROS,
ALI HALF A EURO...
AND THEN MUSTAFA...
I GIVE THEM EVERYTHING.
HE REALLY WAS BAD.
[water splashing]
Next, the kids bathe in a river as Ljutvie washes clothes.

Back in the bonfire, Hussein says POUR MORE BRANDY.
YOU HARDLY POURED A DROP.
Hatidze says I DID.

Hussein says BUT ONLY A DROP.

Hatidze says YOU PAY POORLY, I POUR LITTLE!
Hussein chuckles and says I'LL PAY YOU, HATIDZE.

Hatidze says IT'S GOOD QUALITY BRANDY.

Hussein says THIS BRANDY HAS
MESSED UP MANY MINDS!
Hatidze says DO YOU KNOW
WHAT THE OLD FOLKS SAY?
Hussein says WHAT?
Hatidze says A VILLAGE WITHOUT A RIVER
IS NO VILLAGE AT ALL.
WINTER IS HARD.
Hussein says IT IS HARD.
THERE IS HARDLY ANY WATER.
Hatidze says MY OLDER SISTER DIED
WHEN SHE WAS EIGHT...
I HAD TWO OTHER SISTERS
WHO DIED TOO.
ONE WAS NINE...
AND THE OTHER WAS ONLY
THREE MONTHS OLD.
THEY'RE ALL BURIED OVER THERE.
Now in her house at night, Hatidze says MUM?

Nazife says EH?

Hatidze says GET UP.
GET UP FOR SOME
WATERMELON.
HAVE SOME WATERMELON.
Nazife says HAVE WHAT?
Hatidze says SOME WATERMELON.

Nazife says I DON'T WANT TO.
Hatidze says BUT IT'S NICE.
IT'S VERY SWEET.
Nazife says DID THEY BRING IT?
Hatidze says LJUTVIE AND HUSSEIN
BROUGHT IT.
HOLD IT SO IT DOESN'T
DRIP ON YOU.

Nazife says THERE AREN'T ANY
SMALLER PIECES.
Hatidze says THEY'RE SMALL.
BITE!
THEY CAN'T BE SMALLER THAN THIS.
IS IT SWEET?

Nazife says UH-HUH.
Hatidze says IT'S A LOCAL WATERMELON.
NO CHEMICALS INSIDE.
NOT LIKE THE ONES
YOU BUY AT THE MARKET.
Nazife says I'LL GO TO BED.
Hatidze says WAIT.
Nazife says COVER ME.
I EVEN HAD SOME WATERMELON!
The next day, Safet talks to Hussein as he unloads carpets off a truck. Safet is in his forties. He wears a hat, a green polo-shirt and blue jeans.

Safet says WILL THERE BE ANY HONEY?
A KILO OR TWO, AT LEAST?

Hussein says A KILO IS NOT A BIG DEAL.
I'LL GIVE YOU ONE, NO PROBLEM.

Safet says CHECK IF THERE'S A KILO OR TWO.
Hussein says I HOPED THERE'D BE MORE.

Safet says COME AND TAKE THESE OVER THERE.
TAKE THEM.
YOU'RE NOT LEAVING ME
WITHOUT ANY HONEY, ARE YOU?
Hussein says THERE'S NO...
LET'S SEE THIS ONE.
BUT WITHOUT A PUMP
THEY'LL STING US.

Safet says LET ME JUST TAKE A LOOK, EH?
IT LOOKS LIKE THERE'S ENOUGH
TO TAKE.

Hussein says NO, NO, THERE ISN'T.
Safet says WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
Hussein says I MEAN THERE ISN'T ENOUGH.
PUT IT BACK.
Safet tries the honey and says THE HONEY'S GOOD.

Hussein says THE HONEY'S GOOD, BUT THERE
ISN'T ENOUGH.

Safet says IT'S GOOD.

Hussein says THERE'S NOT ENOUGH.
Alit puffs air to Hatidze's beehive.

Hatidze says WE'RE READY. LET'S SEE HOW
MUCH HONEY THERE IS.
WHEN I OPEN IT,
BLOW THE SMOKE WITH THE PUMP
SO THEY DON'T STING US.
[bees buzzing]
MASHALLAH! THERE'S PLENTY.
1,2,3... 4 HONEYCOMBS.
NOW WE'LL LEAVE THEM HALF.
THEY GAVE US HALF,
WE'LL LEAVE HALF AND CLOSE IT.
BEES FROM BREEDERS
WHO COLLECT THEIR HONEY EARLIER... COME TO MY BEES... ..AND EAT THEIR HONEY.

Hussein checks his bee racks.

Alit says DON'T TAKE ALL
THE HONEY OUT!
Hussein says I WON'T.
Alit sys DON'T TAKE IT ALL OUT!
Hussein says I'M NOT TAKING IT,
JUST PLACING IT LOWER DOWN.
THE WEATHER'S GETTING COLDER.
THE UPPER LEVEL...
THE UPPER LEVEL SHOULD COME OUT.
Alit says SEE, IT'S EMPTY.
MAYBE THEY MADE IT ON
THE OTHER LEVEL.

Hussein says NO THEY HAVEN'T.
Alit yells YOU PUT IT THERE YOURSELF!
Hussein says HATIDZE'S HIVES
HAVE HONEY
ON BOTH LEVELS.
Alit says OURS HAVE NONE.
Hussein says SURE THEY DON'T.
BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT
TAKING GOOD CARE.
Alit says NO, IT'S BECAUSE YOU
TAKE THEIR HONEY.
Hussein says NO, YOU'RE NOT TAKING GOOD CARE.
AND NO MORE GOING
TO SEE HATIDZE!
DO YOU HEAR ME?
DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?
Alit says NOT AT ALL.
Hussein says I'M DOING THIS FOR YOU.
I DON'T NEED ANY OF THIS.
I ALREADY HAVE WHAT I NEED.
IT'S NOT MUCH, BUT IT'S ENOUGH.
BUT YOU DON'T.
I KNOW HOW TO BREED BEES.
GET THE MATCHES AND LIGHT
THE PUMP.
Alit says I'LL GET MUM TO DO IT!
Hussein says DON'T WAIT FOR YOUR MOTHER!
GET THE MATCHES AND LIGHT THE FIRE.
NO MORE GOING TO HATIDZE,
UNDERSTOOD?
I KNOW HOW IT'S DONE.
Alit says MY ASS YOU DO!
Hussein says WE'LL COLLECT OUR OWN HONEY.
Alit says YOU'LL COLLECT MY ASS.

Hussein says I'M DOING THIS FOR YOU.
ONLY FOR YOU.
I DON'T NEED ANY OF IT
YOU NEED IT.

Alit says I DON'T NEED ANYTHING.
Hussein says SURE YOU NEED MONEY FOR SCHOOL
FOR CLOTHES.

Next, Hussein sits next to Ljutvie by the motor home.

Hussein says I BOUGHT THEM EVERYTHING.
EVERYTHING!
THEY DISOBEY ME.
NOW I WON'T BUY THEM A THING.
NOT A THING.
I WON'T EVEN GIVE THEM WHAT
I HAVE. NOT EVEN WHAT I HAVE.
In her house, Hatidze gets ready to dye her hair. She crouches in front of a small mirror.

Hatidze says CAREFUL! CAREFUL WITH THE TOWEL!

Nazife says WHAT?
Hatidze says YOU DROPPED THE TOWEL!
TAKE IT.
WHY DID YOU GET UP?
Nazife says TO SIT FOR A WHILE.
DON'T PULL ME!

Hatidze says EVERYBODY LIKES TO LOOK
NICE, MUM - EVEN ME.

Nazife says WHO DOES?

Hatidze says I DO.
Nazife says I CAN'T HEAR YOU, DEAR.
I DON'T KNOW IF
YOU'RE CURSING OR PRAISING...
Hatidze says DON'T YOU KNOW?
TOMORROW IS HIDRELLEZ...
Nazife says WHAT?
Hatidze says DID YOU KNOW?
Nazife says WHY?
Hatidze says I DON'T KNOW.
Nazife says SO DESPERATE FOR MY HELP?
Hatidze says REMEMBER WHEN
YOU USED TO HELP?

Nazife says THE TIMES WHEN I HELPED
HAVE LONG GONE.

Hatidze says HOW SO?

Nazife says IT'S SO DIFFICULT.

Hatidze says BACK TO BED?
DIDN'T YOU SAY YOU'D HELP?
WELL, HAVE A REST THEN.
Nazife says I CAN'T HELP YOU,
YOU KNOW.

Hatidze says THEN I WON'T HELP YOU EITHER.

Nazife says IS ANYONE MAKING
YOU HELP ME?

Hatidze says I WANT TO.

Nazife says IS IT NIGHT?

Hatidze says THERE'S A LONG TIME TILL
NIGHT COMES, MUM.
Nazife says HOW CAN I HELP?

Hatidze says JUST TIE MY SCARF.
TIE IT HERE.
JUST A BIT.
WHERE ARE THE ENDS?
HERE, HERE.

Nazife says BE SAFE AND SOUND,
MY DAUGHTER.
Hatidze says LET ME GIVE YOU A KISS NOW.

Nazife says LET ME GIVE YOU ONE TOO.
Hatidze says GIVE ME ONE BACK.
THAT'S ENOUGH.
YOU SAY WE ARGUE ALL THE TIME?
THAT I'M RESTLESS?
Nazife says YOU MAY BE RESTLESS,
BUT MOST OF ALL YOU'RE RELIABLE.
Hatidze sings "GIRL, I'M GONNA
BUY YOU CANDIES
BEFORE WE GET MARRIED
AND LEAVE THIS VILLAGE!

Nazife smiles.

Hatidze says LIKE IT?
[truck rumbling down the road]
The next day, Ljutvie pushes the truck to start it. Hussein drives the family and Hatidze to a fair. The kids eat and Hatidze sells her honey.

A female customer says YOUR HONEY'S REALLY GOOD.
[Hatidze talking with customers]
[music of drums and zurnas]

Shirtless men perform a fighting show. Then, the kids imitate the wrestlers.

Hugging one of the kids, Hatidze says I PRAYED FOR YOU TO WIN,
AND YOU DIDN'T LET ME DOWN!

The family sits at a table outdoors. Safet hands them goods.

Safet says TUCK IN! TRY THIS.
THIS IS FOR YOU, HUSSEIN.
AND SOME MORE FOR YOU, HUSSEIN.
THERE'S ENOUGH TO EAT AND DRINK.

Ljutvie says WHAT ARE YOU DOING, SAFET?
HOLD ON.
Safet says EAT LIKE KINGS!
SO ARE YOU OKAY WITH
THE DEAL, HUSSEIN?

Hussein remains silent.

Safet says WHAT DO YOU THINK?
DON'T! LET THE KIDS HAVE IT.
DON'T GIVE IT TO ME.
LET THE KIDS HAVE IT.
LET THEM HAVE IT.
YOU CAN'T SELL BY THE KILO.
I NEED 200 KILOS AT ONCE.
SO WE'VE CLOSED THE DEAL,
RIGHT?
AT 10 EUROS A KILO
I'LL BUY 200. I GIVE YOU MY WORD.
[baby screaming]
Next, Hussein turns a crank to get honey out of a tube. Kids play nearby.

Hussein says LEAVE HER ALONE!
STOP BULLYING HER!
Ljutvie says ALCHO!
YOUR FATHER WILL BEAT YOU!
YOU'RE ASKING FOR IT!

Hussein says STAND STILL. IT WON'T STING.
NOW BLOW THE SMOKE.
BRING THE KNIFE!
ARE THE JARS READY, WOMAN?
BRING THE BIG POT FIRST.
AND A PAN.
Ljutvie says I LEFT THE PAN THERE.
Hussein says IT STUNG ME.
OY! WHY AREN'T YOU COMING?
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
WE NEED TO COLLECT HONEY.
BRING THE PAN HERE.
AND HOLD IT.
TAKE THE JARS TO YOUR MUM
TO WASH THEM. HURRY! QUICKLY!
WHAT IS THIS?
GOD FORBID ANYONE
EVER ASKS YOU TO
DO ANYTHING.
PUT THE MASK ON.
PUT THE MASK ON.
GAMZE! HURRY. VELI, YOU TOO!
VELI COME HERE.

Hussein takes Veli out of the motor home forcing him to work with the bees. Veli is around 12 years old. He wears a yellow polo-shirt.

Hussein says SEE THIS RASCAL!
HE ONLY WORKS WHEN HE'S FORCED .
CUT IT UP!

Sobbing, Veli says IT'LL STING ME.

Hussein says IT WON'T. DON'T BE AFRAID.
I'M BLOWING THIS. YOU'RE SAFE.
GO ON, TEAR IT APART!
IT STUNG ME TOO.
CUT ME RIGHT THROUGH.
FUCKED ME UP.
KEEP SMOKING!
VELI, DON'T RUN AWAY OR
I'LL CUT YOUR HEAD OFF!
WHY IS THE KID NOT COMING?
IS HE A KID OR WHAT?
CUT ME AGAIN.
FUCKED ME UP TOTALLY.
AND A STING ON THE HEAD TOO.
GET THE MASK!

[machine rattling]
Hussein walks past Ljutvie who is turning a crank to obtain honey out of a machine.

Hussein says FASTER, FASTER!
Next, Safet tries the honey.

Hussein says WHO DOESN'T WANT MORE?
Safet weights a package and says THERE ARE 13.5 KILOS HERE.
13.5.
2,3,4,5...
11.
MAY YOU SPEND IT
IN GOOD HEALTH.
WHAT MATTERS NOW IS THAT
YOU COLLECT 20 KILOS MORE.

Now, Hatidze and Hussein talk by her beehive.

Hussein says IT MUST BE SOMETHING ELSE,
HATIDZE.
Hatidze says WHAT ELSE? IT'S YOUR TAKING IT.

Hussein says IF YOU ASK ME, IT MUST BE
THE WEATHER.
IT'S CHANGEABLE!
MUST BE THAT.

Hatidze says LOOK! NOT EVEN FIVE LEFT ALIVE!
Hussein says IT'S NOT BECAUSE OF THAT,
HATIDZE.

Hatidze says I TOLD YOU TO LEAVE HALF!
LOOK WHAT YOUR BEES
HAVE DONE TO MINE!
Hussein says WE LEFT A FRAME FOR EACH.

Hatidze says EITHER YOU TAKE YOURS AWAY
OR I'LL MOVE MINE!
Hussein says THERE'S NOWHERE TO TAKE THEM.
THAT'S NOT MY PROBLEM.
HERE I HAVE MY KIDS TO HELP ME.
Hatidze says AND WHO WILL HELP ME?
AT LEAST YOU HAVE CHILDREN.
I HAVE NONE.
Hussein says I STILL THINK IT'S SOMETHING E.
Hatidze says I'M ASKING YOU TO MOVE
YOUR BEES AWAY FROM HERE.
Hussein says HATIDZE, WHERE
CAN I TAKE THEM?
OUR HOUSE IS HERE.
WE LIVE HERE.
Hatidze says AND WHERE SHOULD
I TAKE THEM?
Hussein says NOWHERE. IT'S OVER.
THEY'RE DEAD.

Later, Ljutvie says NO, IT'S NOT TRUE!
I SWEAR ON MY CHILDREN.
Hatidze says WAIT, WAIT...
THERE ARE LAWYERS...
THERE'S THE COURT...
LET'S SETTLE THE DISPUTE THERE!
IF I GO TO COURT, LET'S SEE
WHAT HE'LL DO...

Ljutvie says DON'T OPEN IT!
Hatidze says WHAT CAN HE DO TO ME?
Ljutvie says BUT WHO IS LYING TO YOU,
HATIDZE?

Hatidze says HE TOLD ME HE TOOK THEM AND
THAT I SHOULD GIVE THEM...
Ljutvie says WE DIDN'T SELL ANY BEES
OR HONEY. ALL OF IT'S HERE.
Hatidze says I TOLD HIM IT'S TOO EARLY,
THAT THE COMBS WILL COLLAPSE...

Ljutvie says HIS FATHER YELLED
AT HIM
FOR COLLECTING THE HONEY,
SAYING...
YOU DON'T COLLECT HONEY NOW.
IT'S TOO EARLY.
The next day, Hatidze calls her bees as she wipes a conic structure. Then, she climbs a tree and listens to the bees inside the trunk.

Hussein says AIM THE SMOKER DIRECTLY
AT THE HEAD.
THERE'S NO DUNG IN IT.

Veli says YES, THERE IS.
IT STUNG ME ON THE FACE.
Veli cries.

Hussein says DON'T BE AFRAID.
Veli says GO COLLECT IT YOURSELF!
AS IF YOU BROUGHT IT YOURSELF,
YOU FILTHY DOG!
FUCK!

Puffing air, Hatidze says THERE'S NO
REASONING WITH THEM.
YOU'RE THE MOST RESPONSIBLE ONE.
NOBODY ELSE
TAKES RESPONSIBILITY.
SEE THESE?
THEY CHASE OUR BEES AWAY.

Hatidze and Veli cross a stream and climb a mountain to a get to a beehive. Later at night, they sit on a cave by a bonfire.

Playing with bonfire, Veli says IT STUNG ME.
THEY LOOK LIKE FLYING STARS.
Hatidze says BE CAREFUL,
IT MIGHT DROP ON
MY HAIR AND SET IT ON FIRE.

Veli says IT BURNT MY LEGS.

Hatidze says MY GOD, THIS YAWNING.
Veli says HATIDZE, WHY DON'T YOU
LEAVE THIS PLACE?
Hatidze thinks and says IF I'D HAD A SON LIKE YOU...
THINGS WOULD
HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT.
BUT I DON'T.
[fire burning and crackling]
Hussein stands by a big fire in the mountain.

Hatidze yells TAKE A LOOK AT
WHAT YOU DID.
Hussein says WHAT CAN I DO, HATIDZE?
I HAVE TO MAKE THIS FIRE.
Hatidze says JUST THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU DID!

Hussein says WE NEED NEW GRASS.
THERE'S NO USE FOR
THE JUNIPER TREE .
Hatidze says THERE'LL BE NO GRASS
FOR THE BEES.
Hussein says THERE'S NO HARM.
Hatidze says YOU NEED IT,
BUT I NEED IT TOO.
Hussein says IT NEEDS TO BURN.
WE NEED NEW GRASS.
Hatidze says I NEED NEW GRASS AS WELL.
Hussein says I TOLD HIM
TO BURN IT DOWN.
Hatidze says YOU'VE DONE A GOOD DEED!
Hussein says IF IT BURNS WE'LL HAVE
MORE GRASS.
Hatidze says BUT LOOK!
Hussein says OK, I WON'T LIGHT THE FIRE
IF YOU TAKE CARE OF MY KIDS.
Hatidze says WHAT CAN I DO IF YOU'VE SET
YOUR MIND ON IT?
Talking to Hussein Veli, Hussein says WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
MOVE!
They leave. Hatidze tries to put the fire off.

In her house, Nazife says CURSED BE
THE NEIGHBOURS.
IT HURTS TO SEE YOU
LIKE THIS, DAUGHTER...
OH GOD!
IT HURTS TO SEE YOU...
Hatidze says WHEN MATCHMAKERS
WERE COMING...
YOU DIDN'T ACCEPT ANY?
Nazife says I DON'T KNOW.
Hatidze says WHEN THEY WERE ASKING
FOR MY HAND?
Nazife says I WELCOMED THEM
AND ACCEPTED THEM...
I ACCEPTED THEM.
Hatidze says WHO DIDN'T, THEN?
Nazife says YOUR FATHER.
Hatidze says EVEN IF THERE
WAS A CHANCE NOW,
I WOULDN'T LEAVE.

Nazife says WHY?

Hatidze says NO REASON.
Nazife says DON'T SAY THAT.
Hatidze says WHY?

Nazife says THAT'S NOT GOOD.
THERE'S NOTHING ELSE TO DO.
Hatidze says HOW COULD I LEAVE YOU?
Nazife says EASY.
I'LL COME TOO.
THE SON-IN-LAW WILL
TAKE CARE OF US.
LET YOUR CARETAKER
BE SAFE AND SOUND.
The next day, Veli unwillingly collects corn in a field.

Veli says I WON'T COLLECT IT!
COLLECT IT YOURSELF, YOU FUCKING...
SHUT UP!
I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW MUCH
THIS WOMAN GETS ON MY NERVES!
Hussein says IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO BELIEVE
THERE'S NONE LEFT?
Safet says YOU TELL ME THERE'S NONE,
BUT LET'S SEE IF THERE IS ANY
LET'S CHECK TOGETHER.
IF THERE IS ANY, IT'S NO BIG DE.
Hussein says YOU THINK I'M LYING?
WHY WOULD I DO THAT?
WHO DOESN'T WANT MONEY.

Safet says BUT, HUSSEIN...
ALL GOOD, BUT LET'S TAKE A LOOK... AND CHECK ALL THE HIVES
TO SEE IF THERE'S ANY...
Hussein says WE WILL, BUT THERE'S NO POINT.
THERE ISN'T ANY.
Safet says YOU HAVE SOME
BUT YOU
AREN'T GIVING ME ANY.
Hussein says CAN'T YOU UNDERSTAND
THE SIMPLE FACT THERE ISN'T ANY?
I'M NOT GOING TO OPEN THE HIVES
JUST TO MAKE THE BEES ANXIOUS.

Now, Safet drives a truck. Hussein sits next to him.

Safet says YOU DON'T SAY.

Hussein says ONE YEAR, ONE KID.

Safet says ONE KID?
Hussein says YES.

Safet says GOD BLESS YOU.
Hussein says ONE YEAR ONE KID.
Safet says GOD BLESS YOU.
Hussein says WHAT CAN WE DO?
WE NEED KIDS.
THEY'RE A REAL TREASURE.
They get into a stream.

Safet says EASY.

Hussein says IT'S VERY COLD.

Safet says WHAT DO YOU MEAN COLD?

Hussein sits on two barrels tied together.

Safet says PUT YOUR LEGS UP.
IS THAT BETTER?
HOLD ON.
Safet saws a branch as Hussein puffs air to it.

Hussein says PULL! FASTER!
DON'T LET THEM DROWN.
Safet says THERE'S THE QUEEN.
Safet eats honey out of a trunk.

Hatidze sobs sitting in her house.

Hatidze says IF YOU WERE
A BABY I'D JUST
TAKE YOU UP IN MY ARMS AND RUN!
THEY'VE KILLED ALL MY BEES.
I HAVE NO BEES...
WE'RE LEFT WITHOUT A SOLUTION.
YOU WILL DIE SOON.
WHAT AM I GOING TO DO THEN?
YOU WILL DIE ONE DAY.
WHAT WILL I DO THEN?
Nazife says GET MARRIED.
Hatidze says GODSPEED.
LET THEM HAVE IT THEIR WAY.
I DON'T WANT TO HAVE
ANYTHING TO DO WITH THEM.

Nazife says GOD WILL PUNISH THEM!
DON'T YOU WORRY TOO MUCH...
Hatidze says I CAN MAKE IT WITHOUT THEM.
Nazife says GOD WILL PUNISH THEM!
MAY GOD BURN THEIR LIVERS!
[plane humming]
[tractor rumbling]
Two of the kids lift dead calves.

Hussein yells DO YOU UNDERSTAND?
FIFTY DIED!
WHY DID THEY DIE?
Ljutvie says THEY WERE SICK.

Hussein says SHOULD'VE CARED MORE!
I TALK, AND TALK AND TALK...
Ljutvie says IT LOOKS FINE?
Hussein says FINE? IT LOOKS HALF DEAD!
NO CARE AT ALL!
THIS IS SICK TOO.
Ljutvie says YEAH, SURE!
Hussein says YOU TAKE NO CARE!
Ljutvie yells NO, YOU TAKE NO CARE!
Hussein says I DO, AND MUCH MORE...
WORK THE LAND!
YOU TOOK CARE?!
LOOK AT THE BUCKETS!?
EMPTY!

Ljutvie yells WHY ONLY ME?
WHY NOT MUZO TOO?
THEN YOU TAKE ALL THE CARE!
Hussein says AND LET YOU DO WHAT?
TAKE CARE BY YOURSELF?
AND SEE YOU DO WHAT?
GOD FORBID, WOMAN.
NOT A BIT OF CARE.
AS IF YOU DID!
SIT ON YOUR ASS ALL DAY?
Ljutvie says I DID TAKE CARE.
YOU FUCKING...
She yells THEY TOOK CARE OF THEM...
Hussein says SURE THEY DID,
AND GOOD CARE TOO, MY.
DID YOU SEE HOW MANY
CALVES DIED?
YOU EAT ALL DAY,
BUT GIVE NOTHING TO THEM.
Veli says YOU KNEW IT WAS SICK!
Hussein says SICK, BUT NOT DEAD!
IT'S NOT JUST ONE.
FIFTY HAVE DIED SO FAR.

Ljutvie says WHEN THERE'S NO FOOD FOR THEM!
Hussein yells THERE IS FOOD!
THE BAGS WERE FULL!
WAS IT SO DIFFICULT TO GRIND CORN?
YOU HAVE THE MILL THERE.
Ljutvie says THEY CAN'T OPERATE THE MILL.
Hussein yells YOU CAN! BUT YOU DIDN'T!
YOU CAN ONLY EAT BUT NOT MILL.
YOU SPOILED THEM.
Ljutvie says YOU DO IT YOURSELF.
Hussein yells THAT'S WHY THEY MISBEHAVE.
BUT THERE WILL BE NOTHING TO EAT.
I'LL BRING FOOD.
NOT FOR YOU, THOUGH!
YOU SHOULD FEEL HUNGER.
BEES ARE NOT ENOUGH.
WE NEED CATTLE TOO.
WE CAN'T SURVIVE
WITHOUT THEM IN THIS DESERT.
[bees buzzing]
[baby crying]
[truck rattling and rambling]
[cows mooing and people shouting]

The family pack and leave. The cattle follow them.

Next, Hatidze chops firewood in the snow.

Talking to a cat, Hatidze says COME TO MY LAP.
WERE YOU COLD?
She sings WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN,
LITTLE KITTEN?
IN THE WARDROBE?
WHAT DID YOU EAT?
MILK AND SKIMMED CREAM?...AND LEFT NONE FOR YOU.

Hatidze thinks near a lit candle.

The next day, Hatidze collects snow and places it on the little stove.

Hatidze says WANT SOME MORE?
Nazife says IS THERE MORE?

Hatidze says AS MUCH AS YOU CAN EAT.
Nazife says I DON'T WANT ANY MORE.
THROW IT AWAY!

Hatidze says DIDN'T YOU WANT MILK?

Nazife says I WANTED MILK, NOT 'AYRAN'.
I DON'T WANT IT.
Hatidze says THEN I'LL GIVE IT TO THE CATS.

Later, Hatidze says CAN YOU IMAGINE SPRING COMING?
SPRING. SPRING.
CAN YOU IMAGINE IT COMING?
SPRING. SPRING.
YOU LIKE SPRING COMING?
Nazife says IS THERE SPRING?
Hatidze says SURE THERE IS.

Nazife says TOO MANY WINTERS HAVE PASSED.
[radio tuning]
Hatidze fixes the radio antenna.

Hatidze says MUM, CAN YOU HEAR THE MUSIC?
MUM...
MUM, CAN YOU HEAR THE SONGS?
At night, Hatidze cries and mumbles by her mother's bed. She pats her face.

Chasing wolves off with a stick on fire, she runs around the house yelling RUN AWAY, YOU DEVILS!
RUN AWAY, YOU DEVILS!
HERE, JACKIE, COME, COME!

The next day, Hatidze prays by a grave covered in snow.

Back in her house, Hatidze says SIT THERE. ARE YOU COL?
HERE, KITTY, KITTY.
COME HERE, KITTY, COME.
Hatidze listens to a song on the radio.

Finally, she walks with her dog in the mountain and feeds him.

A caption reads "Honeyland."

(music plays)

The end credits roll.

Watch: Honeyland
