Transcript: The Minister - Episode 8 | Nov 19, 2020

Clips from the previous episode play.

In off, Benedikt says THE WAKING MEN'S MINDS WANDER WIDELY, NEW WORLDS OPEN WHEN NIGHT FALLS. DO NOT DISTURB THE WAKING MEN STARING INTO THE DARKNESS.

Benedikt stands alone in an open field.

Thorgeir Junior says WE HAVE TO TAKE HIS AUTONOMY AWAY.

Steinunn says YOU NEED MY SIGNATURE.

Thorgeir says THIS IS AN URGENT MATTER FOR THE COURT.

Ottar says THEY ARE SUING ME. THE BRITISH CHIROPRACTIC ASSOCIATION. BECAUSE OF MY INTERVIEW WITH THE BBC.

Looking at a computer screen, Ragna says A LAWSUIT FOR SLANDER IN THE UK. THAT'S EXPENSIVE.

Valgerdour says HREFNA.

Hrefna says YES?

Valgerdour says THIS MEETING WITH THE EU, IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT BENEDIKT SHOULD BE KEPT AWAY.

Hrefna says I'M NOT THE PRIME MINISTER. DON'T TALK TO ME LIKE I'M THE PROBLEM.

Hanne says BENEDIKT, COULD YOU PLEASE SIT DOWN FOR A MOMENT AND...

Angry, Benedikt yells YOU DON'T TELL ME WHERE TO SIT AND STAND IN MY COUNTRY! In Danish, he continues I'M THE PRIME MINISTER, AND YOU'RE DANISH!

Now, in a church, Benedikt says WHO ARE YOU?

Theo says UH, THEO.

Benedikt says YAHWEH?

Theo says NO, I'M JUST... I'M JUST A SHEEP FARMER.

Grimur says WE CAN'T FIND BENEDIKT.

Svanhvit says WHAT? Grimur says MAKE SURE TO FIND HIM RIGHT AWAY.

Svanhvit says SO YOU CAN TAKE OVER?

Grimur says NO. WE.

Steinunn says UM, LISTEN. I NEED A FAVOR. FOR BENEDIKT.

Irina says OF COURSE. NO PROBLEM. In Icelandic, she says WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU?

In a sheep event, Benedikt says DON'T WE HAVE MORE SHEEP?

A Male Farmer says NO, THIS IS ALL WE HAVE FOR NOW, UNTIL WE GO AND CATCH THE STRAYS.

Benedikt says THE STRAYS?

The Farmer says YES. THERE ARE ALWAYS A FEW LEFT ON THE MOUNTAIN.

Benedikt says THAT MOUNTAIN? LOST SHEEP?

The Farmer says YES.

(Benedikt singing) (inaudible)

Benedikt runs in a hill yelling LEO! LEO! LEO!

Against a black screen, a logo reads "Sagafilm." Then, several more logos appear. (birds squawking)

(violin music plays)

A rescue team gathers in the mountains.

In his mid-forties with a beard, a male rescuer says BOYS AND GIRLS, WE HAVE A BRIEFING. PLEASE GATHER AROUND THE OPERATIONS VAN. WE'RE LOOKING FOR A MALE IN HIS 40'S. HE'S ILL-PREPARED, HE'S PROBABLY JUST WEARING A SHIRT AND SHEEPSKIN SHOES. HE WAS LAST SEEN WALKING UP TOWARDS THE MOUNTAIN. I WANT TO EMPHASIZE THAT OUR OPERATIONS ARE CONFIDENTIAL. IF YOU GET ANY QUESTIONS FROM THE MEDIA OR OTHERS, THEN REFER THEM TO THE OPERATIONS HEADQUARTERS.

A Parliament session takes place.

In her forties with short hair, Asa says HE DECLARED THAT WE WERE TO UNILATERALLY ADAPT THE EURO. WE HAVE TO ASK WHAT'S GOING ON. I'M SURE HE HAS SOMETHING INTERESTING TO SAY ABOUT IT, BUT WE HAVE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS IT. I HAVE TO ASK, WHERE IS THE PRIME MINISTER?

(bell dinging) Valgerdour leaves.

Asa continues MR. SPEAKER, WE MUST HAVE ANSWERS. THE PRIME MINISTER HAS TO APPEAR AND TELL US WHAT HE'S THINKING.

The Parliament President says THE SPEAKER ASKS THE HONORABLE MEMBER FROM THE PIRATE PARTY TO RESPECT THE TIME LIMITS.

Ottar shows an online article that reads "The prime minister has bipolar disorder" to a woman in her mid-forties with long brown hair.

The middle-aged woman says IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU?

Ottar says THEY'RE TRYING TO TAKE HIS AUTONOMY AWAY.

The middle-aged woman says SIT DOWN.

Ottar says HIS FATHER MADE THE PLEA.

The middle-aged woman says SIT DOWN.

Ottar says HE WAS HOSPITALIZED 15 YEARS AGO IN THE UK. FOR THE SAME REASON, I'M SURE OF IT.

The middle-aged woman says DO YOU HAVE ANY SOURCES?

Ottar says IT'S GOING ON AS WE SPEAK.

The middle-aged woman says I ASKED IF YOU HAD ANY SOURCES.

Ottar says IT'S OBVIOUS. YOU SAW THE "PERSONA NON GRATA." THING. PUBLISH IT!

The middle-aged woman says YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THE PRIME MINISTER. WE'RE NOT GOING TO DECLARE HIS INSANITY WITHOUT HAVING CREDIBLE SOURCES.

Ottar says IT'S 100 percent TRUE. THE CASE IS GOING ON RIGHT NOW.

The middle-aged woman says WE'RE SPENDING TENS OF MILLIONS ON A CASE BECAUSE YOU STARTED BLATHERING ABOUT CHIROPRACTORS WITHOUT MAKING SURE OF YOUR SOURCES. THAT'S NOT HAPPENING AGAIN. UNDERSTAND?

Ottar says THEN I'LL GO AND GET IT CONFIRMED.

The middle-aged woman says RIGHT.

He slams the door and leaves.

In an office, a female journalist says RESCUE SQUADS ARE SEARCHING FOR SOMEONE UP IN BORGARFJORDUR.

Ottar says OKAY.

The Journalist says THE EU PUBLISHED A STATEMENT REGARDING THE MEETING YESTERDAY. THE COMMISSION IS BACK IN BRUSSELS.

Pissed off, Ottar sits in his working place.

Valgerdour meets with a woman in her early sixties. She has short white hair and wears a dark blazer.

Valgerdour says HE CAN'T BE FOUND. ACCORDING TO MY INFORMATION, GRIMUR WILL TAKE OVER FOR HIM LATER TODAY. AND GRIMUR TOLD ME YESTERDAY EVENING THAT HE HAD MADE A DEAL WITH THE PROGRESSIVE PARTY.

The woman in her sixties says I SEE.

Valgerdour says OUR PARTIES PROMISED THE VOTERS WE WOULD WORK TOGETHER, AND THEREFORE, THIS IS A BETRAYAL TOWARDS THE VOTERS.

The woman in her sixties says YES. THAT'S THE RIGHT CONCLUSION IN MANY WAYS.

Valgerdour says THAT'S WHY... I'M ASKING YOU TO DISSOLVE ALTHING.

The woman in her sixties says I CAN TELL YOU RIGHT AWAY, I WON'T DISSOLVE THE ALTHING WHILE THERE IS A POSSIBLE MAJORITY.

Valgerdour says BUT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT VERY SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES.

The woman in her sixties says AND BENEDIKT IS STILL THE CHAIRMAN OF HIS PARTY, AND HE HAS MY APPROVAL. I WON'T DO ANYTHING UNTIL I'VE SPOKEN TO HIM.

Outside, a female Reporter says WHAT DID YOU DISCUSS? IS THE GOVERNMENT BREAKING UP?

Valgerdour says THE PRIME MINISTER'S DECLARATION REGARDING EUROPE WAS THE REASON I MET THE PRESIDENT. WE DISCUSSED THE SITUATION IN GENERAL TERMS.

A Male Reporter says IS THE GOVERNMENT BREAKING UP?

Valgerdour says NO, NOT AT ALL. BUT I WANTED TO INFORM THE PRESIDENT.

Grimur shows Thorgeir Valgerdour's interview on his cell phone.

Thorgeir says GENERAL TERMS?

Grimur says SHE WANTED TO DISSOLVE ALTHING.

Thorgeir says LIKE THE PRESIDENT WOULD JUST SAY YES TO THAT.

Grimur says SHOULD I TALK TO HER?

Thorgeir says NO. WE HAVE A PLAN. NOW WE JUST HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL BENEDIKT IS FOUND, HE WILL LOSE HIS AUTONOMY, AND YOU WILL TAKE OVER. COULDN'T BE CLEARER.

Grimur says I JUST HOPE HE'S ALL RIGHT.

Thorgeir says SURE.

The male rescuer looks at a computer screen. Worried, Hrefna stands nearby.

Rescue Team Member says WE HAVE PLANNED THE FIRST 300 METERS. THAT'S WHERE HE DISAPPEARED. WE'LL START THERE, BUT IF HE'S NOT FOUND, WE'LL EXPAND THE SEARCH AREA.

The Rescuer says YES.

Team Member says WELL NEED MORE RESCUERS.

The Rescuer says IT'S A LARGE AREA.

(indistinct radio chatter) An aerial view of the mountains appears.

Man 2 says OPERATIONS CENTER RESPONDING. WE HAVE FINISHED SEARCHING OUR AREA.

Man 3 says ROGER THAT. YOU CAN COME DOWN...

(cell phone vibrating)

Steinunn says RIKARDUR. WHAT DOES HE WANT?

Hrefna says I DON'T KNOW.

Steinunn answers her cell phone and says HELLO?

Rikardur says HELLO, STEINUNN, MY DEAR. HAVE YOU ANY NEWS OF MY SON?

Steinunn says DON'T YOU WANT TO TALK TO THE POLICE?

Rikardur says I'M JUST TRYING TO SAVE HIM.

Sobbing, Steinunn says YOUR HELP HAS USUALLY NOT BEEN USEFUL.

(theme music plays) The Island flag appears on Benedikt's face. The name of the series reads "The Minister."

The rescue team works in a foggy area.

Man 1 says WE'RE GOING UP.

Man 2 says WE'RE ENLARGING THE AREA.

Man 1 says WE'RE PLANNING THIS OUT.

Man 3 says WE HAVE TO GO FURTHER WEST.

Man 4 says DO YOU HAVE A NEW AREA?

Man 3 says YES. WE'RE ON OUR WAY. GUYS, SHOULDN'T MORE...

Man 5 yells THEY FOUND HIM! (indistinct radio chatter)

Steinunn runs to get into a helicopter.

Man 6 says I FOUND HIM.

Woman says HE'S FOUND. IT'S THE PRIME MINISTER.

Man 6 says I'LL CHECK HIS VITALS. CAN YOU HEAR ME? BENEDIKT? PREPARE HIM FOR TRANSPORT. BENEDIKT, DO YOU HEAR ME? THE HELICOPTER IS ARRIVING, JUST A FEW MORE MINUTES.

Male Pilot says STAND BY. WE'RE CLOSING IN. I SEE THEM.

Man 6 says BENEDIKT, THE HELICOPTER IS HERE.

WE'LL TAKE YOU TO THE HOSPITAL.

Woman says HOLD THE BLANKET.

Man 6 says WE'LL LIFT YOU UP INTO THE HELICOPTER AND TAKE YOU TO THE CITY.

Man 7 says FOUR METERS... THREE METERS... WE'RE READY.

Woman yells HOLD HIS FACE.

A stretcher comes down the helicopter.

Man 6 says ON THE COUNT OF THREE. ONE, TWO, THREE.

Woman says DONE.

Man 7 says EIGHT METERS... FIVE METERS... THREE... TWO...

The Pilot says HE'S ABOARD. WE WILL FLY TO REYKJAVIK.

Steinunn says MY LOVE. (sobbing) CAN YOU HEAR ME?

Ottar drives his car listening to the radio.

Male Newsreader says THE RESCUE SQUADS HAVE FOUND THE MISSING MAN IN BORGARFJORDUR. A HELICOPTER IS MOVING HIM TO THE GENERAL HOSPITAL. IT WAS FORTUNATE THE MAN WAS FOUND SO QUICKLY. MANY RESCUE SQUADS TOOK PART IN THE SEARCH. DO NOT WANT TO COMMENT ANY FURTHER ON THE CASE.

He parks when the helicopter is landing.

Ottar yells STEINUNN! STEINUNN!

Male Police Officer yells NO PHONES.

Ottar says OKAY, OKAY. STEINUNN. DAMN IT.

Steinunn gets into an ambulance that drives away.

A Man says DO ME A FAVOR. DON'T EAVESDROP.

(ambulance siren wailing)

Steinunn stands next to Benedikt, who is lying in a hospital bed.

Hrefna says CAN I GET YOU SOMETHING?

Steinunn says NO, THANK YOU.

Hrefna says I'LL BE LEAVING THEN.

Steinunn says OKAY.

(line ringing) Steinunn makes a phone call.

Irina says HI.

Steinunn says HI. YOU CAN COME NOW.

Irina says I'M ON MY WAY.

In a hallway, Ottar says HREFNA. HREFNA. HE'S IN THERE, ISN'T HE?

Hrefna says OTTAR, DON'T.

Ottar says ARE YOU HIDING THE FACT THAT THE PRIME MINISTER IS SICK?

Hrefna says YOU KNOW I CAN'T TELL YOU ANYTHING.

Ottar says WHY NOT? YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THE PRIME MINISTER. DO YOU REALLY THINK PEOPLE SHOULDN'T KNOW THAT THE MOST POWERFUL MAN IN THE COUNTRY IS OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY?

Hrefna says WHAT...

Irina says NOW I GIVE HIM A DRUG, SO HE CAN SLEEP.

Steinunn says MMM-HMM.

(door opens) Hrefna walks into Benedikt's room.

Steinunn says AREN'T YOU GOING HOME?

Irina says HI.

Hrefna says IS SHE TAKING CARE OF BENEDIKT?

Steinunn says SHOULDN'T WE TALK TOMORROW?

Hrefna says BUT...

Steinunn says HREFNA. YOU'RE TIRED. GO HOME.

Hrefna says ARE YOU GIVING HIM INJECTIONS WITHOUT HIS DOCTORS KNOWING? DON'T THEY KNOW WHY HE IS HERE?

Steinunn says BENEDIKT IS HERE BECAUSE HE GOT HURT WHILE HIKING.

Hrefna says NO. HE'S HERE BECAUSE HE NEEDS REAL HELP.

Steinunn says WHICH HE WILL GET.

Hrefna says I CAN'T ALLOW YOU TO DO THIS.

Steinunn says SO, WHAT'S YOUR SUGGESTION?

Hrefna says LET'S TELL THE TRUTH.

Steinunn says AND DESTROY HIS LIFE?

Hrefna says DO YOU THINK HIS LIFE WILL BE GREAT IF YOU... IF YOU HIDE EVERYTHING?

Steinunn says NO, BUT THEN HE HAS A CHANCE. THEN HE CAN TELL PEOPLE ABOUT IT WHEN HE WANTS TO. YOU DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO TAKE THAT AWAY FROM HIM.

Hrefna says THERE IS A REPORTER OUTSIDE.

Steinunn says I'LL TAKE CARE OF OTTAR.

Hrefna says HE KNOWS WHAT'S GOING ON.

Steinunn says HREFNA. AND WHO HAVE WE GOT TO THANK FOR THAT? IF YOU HAD REINED YOURSELF IN, OTTAR WOULD BE AT WORK.

Hrefna says OTTAR IS AT WORK.

Steinunn says IF YOU TELL HIM, I'LL MAKE SURE THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES FOR YOU.

Hrefna scoffs.

Steinunn says YOU WORKED VERY CLOSELY WITH HIM. DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITY?

Hrefna says I DO. AND I'M GOING TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY.

Steinunn says HE WAS SICK. PEOPLE WILL UNDERSTAND. BUT YOU... YOU KNEW ABOUT THE DISEASE THE WHOLE TIME, AND HID IT SO THE PARTY COULD CONTINUE IN POWER.

Hrefna says THAT'S NOT TRUE.

Steinunn says HREFNA...

Hrefna says YOU KNOW THAT ISN'T...

Steinunn grabs Hrefna and says UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES, NOBODY CARES ABOUT WHAT IS TRUE. THEY WILL COMPETE TO FIND THE EASIEST PERSON TO BLAME. AND THE GIRL WHO JUST GOT A PROMOTION AND WAS AFRAID THAT SHE WOULD BE FIRED, SHE WILL BE THE PATSY AND THE PARTY WILL BE SQUEAKY CLEAN. THEN YOUR CAREER IS OVER. YOU WON'T FIND WORK. AND YOU... YOU'LL END UP LIKE YOUR MOTHER.

She grabs her chin but Hrefna angrily moves her face away and leaves.

(door opens and closes)

Grimur says THE CHAIRMAN WILL RESIGN, I'LL TAKE OVER, WE'LL PUT THE LID ON THE EURO-THING AND I'LL APOLOGIZE ON HIS BEHALF.

Finnbogi says BUT WHAT ABOUT VALA?

Grimur says SHE HAS NO CHANCE AFTER TAKING PART IN THIS. SHE IS CORNERED, AND I...

Svanhvit walks past. They look at each other. Finnbogi inhales sharply.

Ottar says STEINUNN, PLEASE. WHAT IS BENEDIKT DOING HERE?

Steinunn says HE HAD A HIKING ACCIDENT, AND HE'LL BE HERE UNTIL HE HAS RECOVERED.

Ottar says YOU KNOW I'M NOT AN IDIOT. I KNOW HE HAS A MENTAL DISEASE. AND I THINK THAT PEOPLE HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW.

Steinunn says AND WHAT ARE YOUR SOURCES?

Ottar says I KNOW ABOUT THE AUTONOMY DEMAND.

Steinunn says OH? I THOUGHT THEY WERE NEVER PUBLIC.

Ottar says "PERSONA NON GRATA." CHURCH AND STATE. YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY, I WAS THERE. I HAVE HIS APPLICATION FOR A GRANT SO HE CAN WRITE A MUSICAL WHILE HE'S PRIME MINISTER. I'VE GOT A RECEIPT THAT PROVES HE MADE THE STATE BUY FLOWERS FOR TENS OF THOUSANDS OF KRONAS.

Smiling ironically, Steinunn says ARE YOU GOING TO PROVE YOUR THEORY WITH A FLOWER RECEIPT?

Ottar says HALLGRIMUR TOLD ME.

Steinunn says ON RECORD? IF YOU WRITE A WORD ABOUT IT, I'LL FIRE YOU. AND I HAVE A BRITISH LAWYER ON MY PAYROLL BECAUSE OF YOU. I ONLY SUPPORT MY EMPLOYEES.

Ottar says OKAY. I'LL DO IT ON MY OWN THEN.

Steinunn says OKAY.

Steinunn walks away.

(cell phone ringing) Steinunn says HI.

Svanhvit says ARE YOU COMING?

Steinunn says IN 15 MINUTES. SEE YOU THEN.

Svanhvit and Steinunn meet.

Svanhvit says WHO WILL REPLACE BENEDIKT?

Steinunn says HE'LL BE BACK SOON.

Svanhvit says THAT'S NOT TRUE. I KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH HIM. AND YOU KNOW HE'S GOING TO TAKE A DIVE INTO DEPRESSION. YOU HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER MINISTER WHILE BENEDIKT IS AWAY. AND I KNOW IT'S NOT MY BUSINESS IN A WAY, BUT... I JUST WANT TO WARN YOU IF YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT GRIMUR.

Steinunn says OH?

Svanhvit says HE TOOK PART IN THE AUTONOMY THING. HE'S NEGOTIATING A MAJORITY WITH THE PROGRESSIVE PARTY. SO IF YOU MAKE HIM PRIME MINISTER, BENEDIKT WON'T BE BACK.

Web articles read "Benedikt was flown to the hospital after an accident this morning. Prime minister moved to hospital."

Ottar drinks a beer. Then, he publishes the articles.

As she cooks, Gudny says TERRIBLE NEWS ABOUT BENEDIKT.

Hrefna says REALLY? WHAT NEWS?

Gudny says THAT HE HURT HIMSELF SO BADLY WHILE HIKING. AND HE IS EXPECTING A BABY.

Hrefna checks the article in a laptop sitting on the table.

Gudny says TERRIBLE. I HOPE HE GETS BETTER.

Hrefna says DAMN IT, OTTAR. HE DIDN'T JUST GET HURT WHILE HIKING.

Gudny says IT'S A BIT IMPULSIVE TO JUST WALK OFF.

Hrefna says MOM...

Hrefna types a message on her cell phone that reads "Where are you?"

Hrefna says MOM, HE'S INSANE.

Gudny says MY BENEDIKT? YOU'RE CRAZY.

Hrefna says CAN YOU KEEP SINDRI FOR A LITTLE BIT LONGER?

Gudny says WEREN'T YOU GOING TO EAT WITH US?

Hrefna leaves and says I'M NOT HUNGRY.

Next, Hrefna meet Ottar in a bar.

Hrefna says THIS NEWS STORY... IT'S A LIE.

Ottar says PLEASE ENJOY.

Hrefna says ARE YOU REALLY HELPING THEM?

Ottar says WHAT ABOUT YOU? AT FIRST WHEN YOU GOT THE JOB, I THOUGHT, "YES, FINALLY A PERSON I BELIEVE IN." I THOUGHT YOU WERE THERE FOR THE RIGHT REASONS, BUT NO! YOU'RE CORRUPT LIKE ALL OF THEM! AND YOU'RE HELPING THEM COVERING OVER THIS NONSENSE.

Moved, Hrefna says OTTAR, YOU HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.

Svanhvit gathers the ministers in a meeting

Svanhvit says I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE. AS YOU KNOW, BENEDIKT IS IN HOSPITAL AND WHEN HE WAKES UP, HE'LL ASK THE PRESIDENT TO MAKE ME PRIME MINISTER TEMPORARILY.

Valgerdour says AND DO WE AGREE THAT YOU'RE THE RIGHT PERSON?

Svanhvit says THE INCUMBENT PRIME MINISTER WILL DECIDE AND WE CAN'T CHANGE THAT.

Valgerdour says SO THEN HE'LL BE RETURNING?

Svanhvit says YES.

Valgerdour says IN A WEEK OR...

Svanhvit says IT WILL TAKE HIM A FEW WEEKS TO GET HEALTHY. MAYBE MORE.

Valgerdour says AND HE WILL BE RECOVERED BY THEN?

Svanhvit says YES, THAT'S WHAT I'M EXPECTING.

Then, Thorgeir says I THOUGHT SVANHVIT WAS ON OUR SIDE.

Grimur says ME, TOO. SHE SAID SHE WAS.

Thorgeir says HAS EVERYONE GONE NUTS? DOESN'T SHE UNDERSTAND THAT SHE'S HELPING AN INSANE PERSON?

Grimur says EVERYTHING TO GET THE CHAIR.

Thorgeir says LOOK AT THAT. LOOK WHO'S SUDDENLY MORALIZING.

Grimur says LOOK HERE... IF BENEDIKT LOSES HIS AUTONOMY WHEN HE WAKES UP, HE'S NOT GOING TO DECIDE WHO BECOMES PRIME MINISTER. BECAUSE HE CAN'T.

Thorgeir Junior listens to them and thinks.

Grimur continues SO IF YOU MAKE SURE IT WILL GO THROUGH, I'LL GET THE POSITION AUTOMATICALLY.

Back at the hospital, Steinunn reads a card Benedikt received.

Steinunn says AW.

Rikardur walks in.

Steinunn says YOU CAN'T BE HERE.

Rikardur says ARE YOU FORBIDDING ME FROM VISITING MY SON?

Steinunn says YES, I AM.

Rikardur says I DID THE ONLY THING I COULD DO.

Steinunn says TAKING YOUR SON'S FREEDOM AWAY?

Rikardur says SOMEONE HAD TO HELP HIM.

Steinunn says WOULD YOU HAVE DONE IT IF MY DAD HADN'T SPOKEN TO YOU? DO YOU THINK MY DAD LOVES BENEDIKT? HE WAS SIMPLY USING YOU TO PUSH BENEDIKT OUT.

Rikardur says STEINUNN... LISTEN TO ME. DON'T COVER EVERYTHING IN LIES.

Steinunn says WHAT DO YOU THINK I'M DOING HERE? DON'T YOU THINK I KNOW? HE'S IN HOSPITAL. THE DOCTORS ARE HELPING HIM, BUT YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE WHAT'S BEST FOR HIM. YOU CAN'T BE HERE.

Weakly, Benedikt says HI...

Rikardur says BENEDIKT.

Benedikt says LEO...

Rikardur says WHAT? WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?

Benedikt says LEO.

Rikardur says WHO'S LEO?

Benedikt says LEO.

Steinunn says LEO?

Benedikt says LEO.

Rikardur says LISTEN, I... I HAVE TO SPEAK TO HIM.

Steinunn says YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE HERE WHILE THIS AUTONOMY DEMAND IS STILL IN PLAY.

Benedikt says DADDY... DADDY... LEO...

(door opens) Rikardur leaves and makes a phone call.

Rikardur says GOOD MORNING.

Then, in-off, Thorgeir Junior says THE DEMAND HAS BEEN RETRACTED.

On the phone, Grimur says YES.

Thorgeir Junior says RIKARDUR BACKED OUT.

Grimur says OKAY. THANKS.

Thorgeir Junior says NO PROBLEM.

Grimur looks extremely worried.

He drives his car listening to the radio.

In off, a male newsreader says PRIME MINISTER BENEDIKT RIKARDSSON IS IN THE HOSPITAL AFTER A HIKING ACCIDENT. HIS DOCTORS SAY HIS CONDITION IS STABLE. HE HAD A SERIOUS HEAD INJURY, BUT WILL RECOVER FROM IT.

He parks and runs towards a van.

Grimur says HELLO. DO YOU HAVE A MOMENT?

Thorgeir says NO.

Grimur says THORGEIR, SHOULDN'T WE DISCUSS OUR NEXT STEPS?

Thorgeir says I KNOW WHAT I HAVE TO DO.

Grimur says WE CAN SAY HIS FATHER MADE THE DEMAND AND THEN RETRACTED...

Thorgeir says IT'S OVER. I'M GOING TO MEET SVANHVIT.

Grimur says BUT SHE'S... SHE'LL LEAD THE CURRENT MAJORITY.

Thorgeir says IF YOU HAD BEEN ABLE TO KEEP CONTROL, WE WOULDN'T BE IN THIS RIDICULOUS POSITION. I HAVE TO GO TO HER LIKE A BEATEN DOG AND BEG FOR A MEETING.

(starts car)

Grimur says THORGEIR. COME ON.

Thorgeir drives away.

Now, Benedikt lies in bed at his house listening to Rikardur and Steinunn chat.

Rikardur says THE DEMAND, THAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT THING I EVER HAD TO DO. DON'T PUT US IN THIS POSITION. THIS CAN ALL HAPPEN AGAIN.

Steinunn says LET'S DISCUSS IT LATER.

Rikardur says THERE'S NO SHAME IN BEING SICK. I HAVE SEEN WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PEOPLE TRY TO HIDE IT. DON'T DO THAT TO HIM.

Steinunn says LET HIM REST.

Rikardur says DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID.

(doorbell rings) Hrefna answers the video intercom and says HI.

Grimur exhales and says HI.

Hrefna scoffs. Grimur does a funny move. Smiling, she presses a button and breathes deeply.

Hrefna says AND WHAT? WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?

Grimur says DOESN'T SOMEONE NEED A LAWYER?

Hrefna says I THINK THE PROFESSION IS A BIT SATURATED.

Grimur chuckles and says TRUE.

Hrefna says BUT REALLY, ARE YOU THERE?

Grimur says NO. AND YOU? WHAT ABOUT YOU?

Hrefna says I DON'T KNOW. I'LL PROBABLY START BY TERMINATING MY LEASE.

Grimur says REALLY?

Hrefna says AN UNEMPLOYED SINGLE MOTHER LIVING IN... (chuckles)...A PENTHOUSE APARTMENT? I DON'T THINK SO.

Grimur says HAVE THEY COMPLETELY PUSHED YOU OUT?

Hrefna says YES. I CAN'T TAKE PART IN THIS.

Grimur says IF YOU NEED A PLACE TO STAY...

Hrefna says THANK YOU, GRIMUR. I'LL CONSIDER IT.

Grimur sighs heavily and says IT'S A POLITICAL FIASCO. STEINUNN IS CONTROLLING THE GOVERNMENT.

Hrefna says IT'S NOT QUITE WHAT BENEDIKT PROMISED.

Grimur says BUT THE NATION MUST BE ABLE TO SEE IT. HE WENT SO FAR.

Hrefna says MMM-HMM.

Grimur says HEY, WHAT'S THE MATTER?

With a breaking voice, Hrefna says SORRY.

Grimur says WHAT'S WRONG?

Sobbing, Hrefna says SORRY.

Grimur says IT'S ALL RIGHT.

Hrefna sobs and says IT'S JUST THIS...

Grimur says MMM.

Grimur comforts her.

Hrefna says HE WENT SO FAR.

Grimur says BENEDIKT? WHAT...

Hrefna says I WASN'T GOING TO SAY ANYTHING, JUST... (exhales)

Grimur hugs her and says HE'S NOT COMING BACK. HE'S FINISHED. HE'S FINISHED. YES. I PROMISE.

In bad shape, Benedikt watches an interview of himself on the TV.

The Interviewer says WE CAN'T.

Benedikt says WHO'S STOPPING US?

(CHUCKLES)

The Interviewer says THE EUROPEAN UNION.

Benedikt says IT'S NOT THEIR BUSINESS WHETHER WE PAY EACH OTHER WITH KRONAS OR EUROS OR FLOWERS. LET'S SAY YOU SOLD ME THIS CAMERA AND I PAID YOU IN LEGOS. LEGOLAND WOULDN'T MIND.

The Interviewer says I HAVE DOCUMENTS THAT SHOW THAT IT GOES AGAINST THE AGREEMENT WITH THE EU.

Benedikt says WE HAVE THE EXPERT HERE. (SNAPS FINGERS) LET'S GET HIM. THE GOVERNOR OF THE CENTRAL BANK.

The Interviewer says NO... I'M INTERVIEWING YOU.

Benedikt says YES.

The Interviewer says PEOPLE IN YOUR PARTY SUGGEST YOU'RE UNDEMOCRATIC...

Benedikt says I DON'T BELIEVE IT. GUNNAR, TELL ME...

The Interviewer says YOU DON'T BELIEVE IT?

Benedikt says LOOK HERE. IF... IF I BOUGHT THE CAMERA HERE AND PAID HIM IN LEGO, LEGOLAND WOULDN'T MIND? ARE THERE ANY LAWS THAT STOP US FROM USING THE EURO UNILATERALLY?

The Interviewer says THE EUROPEAN UNION WOULD SAY IT'S AN ATTACK ON ITS SOVEREIGNTY.

Benedikt says DO YOU LOVE THE KRONA SO MUCH? WHY ARE YOU TALKING TO THIS MAN?

Next, Grimur visits Benedikt.

Grimur says I THINK SHE DOESN'T WANT TO SPEAK TO YOU. SHE'S UPSET, BENEDIKT. AND SHE'S ANGRY BECAUSE YOU'RE GOING TO PRETEND NOTHING HAPPENED... AND JUST SHOW UP AGAIN IN A MONTH. OR WHATEVER. FOR YOUR SAKE AND YOUR FAMILY'S SAKE, AND HREFNA'S SAKE, YOU SHOULD RESIGN AND MAKE ME PRIME MINISTER INSTEAD. AND I'LL HELP YOU SOLVE ALL THIS PEACEFULLY.

Looking down, Benedikt says THANK YOU. Grimur says AND WE'LL DO IT THE RIGHT WAY. YOU'LL ADDRESS TO THE NATION. I'LL TELL THE TV STATION THAT YOU ARE COMING FOR AN INTERVIEW. YOU'LL TELL THEM THE PRESSURE OF THE JOB WAS TOO MUCH FOR YOU, AND THAT YOU'VE DECIDED TO RESIGN, AND THAT THE VICE-CHAIRMAN WILL TAKE OVER AS PRIME MINISTER. I'LL HANDLE THE REST. I JUST WANT THIS TO WORK OUT.

Benedikt signs a document Grimur hands to him.

Benedikt says I'M SORRY. TELL HER... TELL HER I'M SORRY.

Grimur watches an online interview of Svanhvit as he makes a phone call.

In the interview, Svanhvit says YES, BENEDIKT IS HOME AND WE, OF COURSE, HOPE THAT HE WILL RECOVER SOON. BUT HE WON'T BE ABLE TO WORK FOR A WHILE. I EXPECT THEY WILL TELL US THIS WEEK WHO WILL BE TAKING OVER AS PRIME MINISTER.

(line ringing)

Female Reporter says COULD IT BE YOU, SVANHVIT?

Svanhvit says IT'S BENEDIKT'S DECISION.

Thorgeir Junior says THORGEIR.

Grimur says HELLO?

Thorgeir Junior says HI.

Grimur says HOW WAS THE MEETING WITH SVANHVIT?

Thorgeir Junior says FINE.

Grimur says RIGHT. I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW I HAVE PAPERS FROM BENEDIKT DECLARING THAT I WILL TAKE OVER AS PRIME MINISTER.

Thorgeir Junior says OH, SO...

Grimur says YES. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. AND JUST SO YOU KNOW, I'M NOT THINKING ABOUT WORKING WITH THE PROGRESSIVE PARTY.

Thorgeir Junior says HEY, LISTEN...

Grimur says GOODBYE.

Thorgeir Junior says GRIMUR...

Grimur exhales.

Steinunn walks into the bedroom. Benedikt is getting dressed.

Steinunn says ARE YOU GOING FOR A WALK? WHAT'S GOING ON? MY LOVE... TALK TO ME.

Benedikt says I'M GOING FOR AN INTERVIEW. I'M RESIGNING.

Steinunn says BENEDIKT... I KNOW YOU'VE DESCENDED INTO THE DARKNESS, BUT YOU WILL GET BETTER.

Benedikt says YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I DID.

Steinunn says THE THING WITH HREFNA? I TALKED TO HREFNA. SHE UNDERSTANDS.

Benedikt says I CAN'T DO THIS ANYMORE. I HAVE TO GO. I HAVE TO GO.

Steinunn says COME HERE.

Steinunn kisses him on the forehead.

Benedikt says STEINUNN... STEINUNN, I HAVE TO GO.

Steinunn says COME HERE.

Benedikt says I HAVE TO GO.

Steinunn says COME HERE, MY LOVE. COME HERE. I'LL BRING YOU A CUP OF TEA.

Steinunn spots an announcement.

Steinunn says WHAT'S THIS? WHO BOOKED A SPEECH?

Benedikt says GRIMUR.

Steinunn says GRIMUR? DOES GRIMUR THINK HE'S TAKING OVER?

Benedikt says YES.

Steinunn says OKAY. Angry as she irons a shirt, she says IF GRIMUR WANTS A SPEECH, HE'LL GET A SPEECH. THIS IS TREASON.

Lying in bed, Benedikt says TREASON?

Steinunn says I'LL WRITE A SPEECH. YOU WERE HIKING, YOU FELL, AND HURT YOURSELF. IT WILL TAKE YOU TWO MONTHS TO REST AND THEN YOU'LL BE READY TO COME BACK. SVANHVIT WILL BE PRIME MINISTER UNTIL THEN. AND IF GRIMUR OR DAD OR THORGEIR OR ANYONE TRIES TO TALK ABOUT THE DISEASE, I SWEAR, I'LL KILL THEM. THEY ARE MERCILESS.

Benedikt says STEINUNN... ARE THEY MERCILESS? STEINUNN... He sits and says WE CAN'T DO THIS. WE HAVE TO TELL THE TRUTH.

Steinunn says AND WHAT THEN? DO YOU THINK THE NATION WILL ACCEPT YOUR DISEASE?

Benedikt says NO.

Steinunn says NO.

Benedikt says BUT I HAVE TO.

Steinunn says IT'S NOT DECISION YOU CAN TAKE FOR BOTH OF US. FOR US THREE. YOU'RE SICK.

Benedikt says I JUST WANT TO GO BACK TO TEACHING.

Steinunn says OKAY. OKAY. GREAT. BUT DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT IF YOU DO THIS NOW, I'M NOT SURE YOU CAN GO BACK TO TEACHING. THE WORLD PRETENDS TO BE OPEN AND TOLERANT, BUT PEOPLE WILL NEVER SEE YOU THE SAME WAY AGAIN. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

Benedikt says AND... SHOULD I JUST HIDE IT? LIE TO EVERYONE? WHAT HAPPENED TO US WHO WERE GOING TO CHANGE ICELAND?

Steinunn says WE WILL DO IT.

Benedikt says NO. OBVIOUSLY NOT.

Steinunn says I'VE DONE EVERYTHING FOR YOU. AND I'M READY TO CONTINUE TO DO IT. AND TAKE CARE OF YOU.

Benedikt stands up and Steinunn grabs his arm, but he keeps walking.

(doorbell ringing) Hrefna answers the intercom and stares at the screen.

Benedikt says IT'S...

Hrefna says YES. I'LL COME DOWN. SINDRI. I'M GOING DOWNSTAIRS.

Benedikt says I KNOW, I REALIZE... WHAT I DID. AND...

Benedikt gets emotional.

Hrefna says YOU HAVE A DISEASE.

Benedikt says YES.

Hrefna says WHAT ABOUT THE SPEECH?

Benedikt says I DON'T KNOW.

Hrefna says WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO SAY?

Benedikt says I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY. I JUST WANT TO GO TO SLEEP.

Hrefna says JUST TELL THE TRUTH.

Benedikt says THE TRUTH. I HAVE TO GO.

Hrefna says WAIT. I'LL COME WITH YOU.

Benedikt, Hrefna and Sindri walk into a modern building.

Benedikt says GOOD EVENING.

Hrefna says EVENING.

Benedikt says GOOD EVENING.

Hrefna says GOOD EVENING.

A Man says GOOD EVENING.

Sindri says WHERE ARE WE GOING?

Benedikt says HEY, SINDRI... SEE. WE'RE GOING INTO THE MAKE-UP ROOM.

Hrefna says GOOD EVENING.

Benedikt sits in a dressing room. (panting)

Benedikt says HREFNA. SHOULD I HAVE MY HANDKERCHIEF?

Hrefna says DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING.

Now, Benedikt sits in a TV studio.

(cell phone chiming) He receives a message from Steinunn. It reads "Where are you? Please call me."

Male Producer says OKAY. TEN SECONDS. ARE YOU ALL RIGHT?

Benedikt says YES.

The Producer says AND FIVE, FOUR, THREE...

Benedikt clears his throat and says DEAR ICELANDERS. I'M TALKING TO YOU, NOT AS PRIME MINISTER OR AS A CHAIRMAN OF A POLITICAL PARTY, BUT AS BENEDIKT RIKARDSSON, A SON, HUSBAND AND SOON-TO-BE FATHER. I'M SICK. I HAVE BIPOLAR DISORDER. YOU WON'T BELIEVE HOW HARD IT IS TO SAY IT. I DON'T THINK I'VE EVER SAID IT ALOUD BEFORE. I WANT TO APOLOGIZE TO YOU. I DIDN'T REALIZE HOW SICK I WAS, AND I'M... STILL REALIZING WHAT CONSEQUENCES MY DECISIONS HAD AS PRIME MINISTER. I WILL SEEK TREATMENT, AND ASK THE PRESIDENT TO ACCEPT MY RESIGNATION. BEHIND ME IS A LOVING GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO HAS HAD TO BEAR WITNESS TO THE WORST OF MY SYMPTOMS. THEY NEVER GAVE UP ON ME, AND THEY HELPED ME FIND TREATMENT. WITHOUT THEM, I'M SURE I WOULDN'T BE ALIVE. I WANT TO THANK THEM. "A SMILE WILL TURN THE DARK TO LIGHT, "THE DROP WILL TURN THE SWEET DRINK TART. "MOODS WILL ALTER BY A WORD OF SMITE "CARE MUST BE SHOWN TO ANOTHER HEART."

Svanhvit smiles as she reads Benedikt's resignation. Sindri hands Hrefna a drawing of Benedikt and his dog. Rikardur hangs an abstract painting and blesses it.

Benedikt concludes IT'S BEEN A PRIVILEGE TO BE YOUR PRIME MINISTER. THANK YOU.
