Transcript: The New Silk Road Part 3 & 4: Host Intros | Oct 30, 2018

Fast clips show images of the streets in China.

Diana stands in the studio.

Diana is in her thirties, with long straight black hair and wears a black pencil skirt, a red blouse and a necklace.

Behind her, images of China appear on a wall screen with the caption "China. Here and Now."

Diana says HELLO, I'M DIANA FU,
WELCOME TO
CHINA HERE AND NOW.
AS WE CONTINUE TO LOOK AT
MODERN CHINA'S
GROWTH AND INFLUENCE IN
THE 21ST CENTURY,
TONIGHT'S EPISODES FOLLOW
THE NEW SILK ROAD
INTO IRAN AND EGYPT.

The Iranian and Chinese flags and presidents appear on the wall screen.

Diana says CHINA HAS BEEN DOING BUSINESS
WITH IRAN LONG BEFORE
SANCTIONS WERE
LIFTED IN 2016
AND REINTRODUCED
IN 2018.
WHERE THE UNITED STATES
HAS RETREATED,
CHINA HAS ENTERED
AND STAYED.
CHINA AND IRAN
ESTABLISHED DIPLOMATIC
ELATIONS IN THE 1970S.
WHILE GEORGE W. BUSH DEEMED
IRAN TO BE A PART OF THE
AXIS OF EVIL IN 2002,
CHINA CONTINUED TO
TRADE WITH IRAN.
TODAY, CHINA IS THE WORLD'S
LARGEST IMPORTER OF CRUDE OIL.
AMONG THE MANY DEALS IS THE
HUAWU TEHRAN RAILWAY LINE,
WHICH ENABLES FASTER
DELIVERY OF GOODS
BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.
THIS KIND OF INFRASTRUCTURE
MAKES IT EVEN EASIER
FOR CHINESE GOODS TO OUT
COMPETE RIVALS
IN THE IRANIAN MARKET.
MEANWHILE, CHINA HAS
HAD A DIPLOMATIC
RELATIONSHIP WITH EGYPT
SINCE 1956.
BUT A NEW SPECIAL
ECONOMIC ZONE CREATED
ALONG THE SUEZ CANAL,
PROMISES TO TURN EGYPT INTO
CHINA'S GATEWAY TO AFRICA,
AND PERHAPS EVEN TO EUROPE.
CHINA'S ALSO LOOKING TO EXPORT
ITS CULTURAL GOODS.
IS CHINA'S SOFT POWER A
BENIGN EFFORT TO
TEACH THE WORLD CHINESE
CULTURE AND VALUE,
OR IS IT A MORE
CALCULATED MANEUVER
TO REPLACE THE
UNITED STATES AS THE NEXT
GLOBAL INFLUENCER?
