Transcript: The New Silk Road, Parts 1 & 2: Host Intros | Oct 23, 2018

Fast clips show images of the streets in China.

Diana stands in the studio.

Diana is in her thirties, with long straight black hair and wears a black pencil skirt, a red blouse and a necklace.

Behind her, images of China appear on a wall screen with the caption "China. Here and Now."

Diana says HELLO, I'M DIANA FU,
WELCOME TO
CHINA HERE AND NOW,
A LOOK AT A RAPIDLY
CHANGING CHINA
AND ITS INFLUENCE
ON THE WORLD.
TONIGHT TWO EPISODES LOOK AT
CHINA'S FAR REACHING TRADE PLAN.
CHINA'S BELT AND
ROAD INITIATIVE,
OR THE NEW SILK ROAD,
PUTS THE COUNTRY AT THE
CENTRE OF GLOBAL TRADE.
ONE IMPORTANT STOP AROUND
THE ROUTE IS YINCHUAN,
A NORTHWESTERN CITY THAT IS
HOME TO ONE OF CHINA'S
TWO MAJOR
MUSLIM MINORITIES:
THE HUI.
THE CITY HAS BECOME CHINA'S
GATEWAY TO TRADE WITH
EGYPT AND JORDAN.
CHINA'S NOW THE SECOND
LARGEST TRADING PARTNER OF
ARAB COUNTRIES, AND YINGCHUAN
PLAYED HOST TO THE
2017 CHINA-ARAB EXPOS.
MEANWHILE, PAKISTAN, A LONG-TERM
POLITICAL ALLY OF CHINA,
IS ALSO AN IMPORTANT
TRADING PARTNER.
IN 1959, THE TWO COUNTRIES BUILT
THE KARAKORAM HIGHWAY.
THIS CONNECTS TO KASHGAR,
CHINA'S WESTERN MOST CITY,
WITH PAKISTAN.
THE HIGHWAY IS STILL VITAL
TO BILATERAL TRADE
AND IS PART OF THE
CHINA-PAKISTAN
ECONOMIC CORRIDOR,
LAUNCHED IN 2015.
INCREASED TRADE IS ALSO
ALLOWING CHINA TO
EXTEND ITS
CULTURAL INFLUENCE.
PAKISTANI CHILDREN ENROLLED
AT PRIVATE SCHOOLS ARE
LEARNING CHINESE;
THE LANGUAGE OF THE FUTURE.

On the wall screen behind her appears a picture of Pakistani children holding both the Chinese and the Pakistani flags.

A street sign reads "Long live Pak-China friendship."

Diana says WHILE THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT
HAS TOUTED THE CORRIDOR
AS A WIN-WIN MODEL,
OTHERS RESIST WHAT THEY SEE AS
GROWING CHINESE INFLUENCE.
PAKISTANI ACTIVISTS
HAVE PROTESTED
WHAT THEY CONSIDER TO BE
THE DESTRUCTION OF NATIONAL
HERITAGE SIGHTS.
POLITICIANS HAVE DECRIED CHINA'S
ULTERIOR GEOPOLITICAL MOTIVES.
WILL ACCEPTING CHINESE
INVESTMENT AND INFLUENCE
PAY OFF FOR PAKISTAN?
