Old pictures of different parts of a city overlap on a map.

A male voice says ALL THE ACTION WAS DOWNTOWN.

A female voice says THE DOWNTOWN WAS SO ALIVE,
THERE WERE SO MANY PEOPLE.

Another male voice says EVERYBODY ON THE MAIN STREET
KNEW ONE ANOTHER.

Another female voice says I REMEMBER THE MERCHANTS
HOSING DOWN THEIR SIDEWALKS,
CRANKING UP THEIR AWNINGS.

A third male voice says IT WAS BUSTLING.
THE STREET HAD LIFE TO IT.

The name of the show appears on a road sign. It reads "Main Street Ontario. Kingston."

Michael Hurley says BRIAN'S RECORD OPTION,
RECORD OPTION AS IN VINYL,
ODDLY ENOUGH, KINGSTON'S
LONGEST RUNNING BUSINESS
AND NOBODY
WOULD HAVE GUESSED.

Brian Lipsin says AND I, I PICKED ABOUT TEN
DIFFERENT PLACES
THAT I THOUGHT WOULD BE IDEAL
AND I HAD A CHECKLIST.
SO KINGSTON WON OUT.
IT STARTED OFF IN 1980.
BACK THEN, I WAS THE REBEL,
I WAS THE, YOU KNOW,
THE NEW KID IN TOWN.

A picture of a bearded man holding a cat appears.

Brian says AND NOW, I GUESS
I'M THE ESTABLISHMENT.
I LAUGH YOU KNOW...
(LAUGHTER)

A picture of a man with a gray beard appears.

Brian says AT THE TIME, THERE WEREN'T MANY
USED STORES VERSUS NEW STORES.
THERE WAS NEW and USED, THERE WAS
THE MUSIC OF ALL SORTS.
I PROVIDE CHOICE.

Patrick Downes says CRAZY RECORD
STORE.

John Durst says YOU'LL GO IN THERE
AND YOU'LL LOOK AROUND
AND YOU'LL GO, "HOLY--."
YOU THINK YOU'RE GONNA DIE
'CAUSE HE'S GOT RECORDS
PILED UP EVERYWHERE.

Craig Walker says YOU CAN HARDLY MOVE
WALKING THROUGH THAT,
FOR THE STUFF
PILED ALL OVER IT.

Michael says TOTAL RANDOMNESS,
CHAOS AND DISORGANIZED.
IT'S TUMBLING DOWN,
IT'S FALLING DOWN,
AND HE'S IN TOTAL ZEN-Y CONTROL.

Craig says BRIAN HIMSELF ALWAYS KNOWS
WHERE ANYTHING CAN BE FOUND.
HE'S THE FRIENDLIEST GUY
YOU COULD EVER MEET.
IF YOU'RE LOOKING
FOR SOMETHING SPECIFIC,
YOU SPEAK TO BRIAN
AND HE HELPS YOU IN SECONDS.

Patrick says HE'LL LOOK UP
TO THE LEFT OR THE RIGHT...
I THINK TO THE LEFT
HE'LL LOOK UP...
AND HE'LL THINK
FOR LIKE TWO SECONDS
AND THEN HE'LL GO
"OH, YEP."
HE'LL SHUFFLE OFF AND HE'LL GET
WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR.
IT'S LIKE HIS BRAIN
IS LIKE THIS BIG FILING CABINET
FOR LIKE THESE CRAZY RECORDS
THAT ARE EVERYWHERE.
IT'S LIKE A... IT'S LIKE
AN EPISODE OF HOARDERS
ONLY IT'S ALL
SO WELL ORGANIZED
IN HIS BRAIN.

Brian says OH, I'M ALWAYS FEELING SILLY
BECAUSE I DON'T
RECOGNIZE ANYONE, YOU KNOW...
(CHUCKLING) WHO I SHOULD.
THE GUY FROM
BLUE RODEO CAME IN,
I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS HIM,
AND HE HAS A WHOLE BUNCH
OF TAB BOOKS ON THE COUNTER
AND HE SAYS,
"WHERE'S YOUR FOLK SECTION?"
ANYWAYS, HE COMES BACK AND SAYS,
"OKAY, I'LL TAKE THESE."
AND I SAID,
"OH, YOU MUST PLAY GUITAR."
AND HE SAYS, "YEAH."
AND I SAID,
"ARE YOU ANY GOOD?"
AND HE SAYS, "OKAY."
AND UH..."DO YOU PLAY
WITH A BAND?"
AND I HAD THE LATEST
BLUE RODEO RECORD UP THERE
AND HE POINTED TO IT,
AND OH BOY...
(LAUGHTER)
I ENJOY WAKING UP IN THE MORNING
AND COMING TO WORK,
WHICH VERY FEW PEOPLE
CAN SAY THE SAME.
SO, YOU KNOW,
SOME PEOPLE LIKE IT,
SOME PEOPLE DON'T
BUT, YOU KNOW, WHATEVER
AS LONG AS IT'S
WORKING, YOU KNOW?
I MEAN, I THRIVE ON
INSTABILITY, BUT UH...
(LAUGHS)
STABILITY EVERY NOW
AND THEN IS, IS FINE
NO, IF YOU'RE, IF YOU'VE
BEEN IN BUSINESS 35 YEARS,
THAT'S STABLE.
BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE
THE UPS AND DOWNS IN KINGSTON,
AND THERE HAS BEEN
A LOT OF THEM, YOU KNOW?

An animated postcard reads "Dear Brian, Your record shop is so so cool- You rule! We’re glad you came here, and stayed all these years. Sincerely, Downtown Kingston."
