Old pictures of different parts of a city overlap on a map.

A male voice says ALL THE ACTION WAS DOWNTOWN.

A female voice says THE DOWNTOWN WAS SO ALIVE,
THERE WERE SO MANY PEOPLE.

Another male voice says EVERYBODY ON THE MAIN STREET
KNEW ONE ANOTHER.

Another female voice says I REMEMBER THE MERCHANTS
HOSING DOWN THEIR SIDEWALKS,
CRANKING UP THEIR AWNINGS.

A third male voice says IT WAS BUSTLING.
THE STREET HAD LIFE TO IT.

The name of the show appears on a road sign. It reads "Main Street Ontario. Ottawa."

A sign reads "Rue Rideau Street."

A male voice says RIDEAU STREET WAS
THE GRAND DAME
OF THE CITY OF OTTAWA.
YOU HAD THE BEST SHOPPING
IN EASTERN CANADA.

Photo cut outs pop up as each person speaks.

Dave, a man in his sixties wearing an apron says SO, IN '59 WE OPENED
THE DELI ON RIDEAU STREET.
WE HAD FOUR TABLES FOR TWO.
EIGHT PEOPLE WERE ABLE
TO EAT, IN AN EIGHT.

A woman in a waitress uniform says THEY ALWAYS HAD SERVERS
THAT WERE NOT YOUNG.
AND, TO ME, THAT JUST MEANS
YOU'RE GONNA GET GOOD SERVICE.

A male voice says ALL OF THESE FAMOUS WORLD STARS
WOULD COME THERE AND EAT,
AND THEIR PICTURES
ADORN THE WALL.

The owner says YOU WOULD GET A TABLE
OF PEOPLE IN TUXEDOS,
GOING TO THE ART CENTRE,
AND THEN PEOPLE IN JEANS
RIGHT NEXT TO IT.
IT WAS SUCH A MIXED BAG.

A male voice says HE WORKED EXTREMELY HARD,
YOU WOULD NEVER GO
TO NATE'S AND NOT SEE HIM.
AND YOU'D WONDER,
WHERE DOES HE GET THE TIME?

Another male voice says DAVE WOULD BE BACK
WITH HIS SISTER, FRIDA,
AND HE'D BE CUTTING
SMOKED MEAT IN THE BACK,
AND, YELLING OUT AN ORDER.

Another male voice says PEOPLE WOULD GO THERE,
THEY'D FEEL LIKE
THEY WERE IN MONTREAL, Y'KNOW?
OR, NEW YORK, OR SOMETHING.
YOU FELT VERY SPECIAL, CAUSE,
YOU WERE GETTING
REAL SMOKED MEAT.

A man with a medal that reads "Mayor" says THE THRILL OF MY LIFE
WAS WHEN HE LEARNED MY NAME.
THE FIRST DAY HE
CALLED ME "JIM,"
I WAS LIKE, WOW,
I'VE MADE IT IN THIS CITY.
DAVE SMITH KNOWS ME,
AND I'M NOT, "HEY, BUD."

Dave says TRUDEAU USED TO COME
THROUGH OUR BACKYARD
WITH HIS LITTLE
CONVERTIBLE MERCEDES,
PARK IT IN OUR BACKYARD,
COME THROUGH THE KITCHEN
AND GET FOOD FOR MARGARET.
THE KIDS GREW UP ON
CHOPPED LIVER AND SMOKED MEAT.
HAHA, WE SAW THAT WHOLE EPISODE.

(SIRENS BLARE)

Dave says I'LL NEVER FORGET
ONE PARTICULAR DAY.
THE FIRE CHIEF CAME IN,
THERE WAS A FIRE,
AND PEOPLE NEEDED SOME FOOD.
I SAID, COME ON, CHIEF,
LET'S GRAB A BOX,
GO IN THE KITCHEN,
LET'S GO IN THE WALK-IN,
AND WE'LL FILL IT FULL OF FOOD.
AND TRUDEAU WAS SITTING THERE
WITH TWO OTHER PEOPLE,
HE SAW THE CHIEF
WALK OUT WITH THE BOX,
AND I WAS SAYING
GOODBYE TO HIM.
TRUDEAU GOT UP FROM HIS TABLE,
AND CAME OVER...
UH, SHOOK MY HAND.
HE DIDN'T HAVE TO SAY A WORD.
HE KNEW WHAT I WAS DOING.
THE DEVELOPERS
WANTED THAT PIECE OF LAND,
SO THEY KEPT GIVING YOU OFFERS,
AND I'D SAY NO,
AND THEY'D COME
GIVING YOU OFFERS,
AND I'D SAY NO,
AND THEN THEY'D
COME WITH AN OFFER
THAT YOU CAN'T REFUSE IT.
IT'S VERY SAD.
I SOMETIMES AM
VERY ANGRY AT MYSELF
FOR ACCEPTING IT.
THERE WAS A LOT
OF HISTORY THERE.
FIFTY YEARS OF HISTORY.
FIFTY YEARS OF
PEOPLE GROWING UP.
FIFTY YEARS OF
GOOD STUFF AND BAD STUFF.
YOU SHARED A TEAR WHEN
THERE WAS A DISASTER
IN SOMEBODY'S FAMILY,
AND YOU SHARED A LAUGH.
I'M THE YOUNGEST
OF THIRTEEN KIDS.
SO WE GREW UP ON,
ON ST. PATRICK'S STREET,
WHICH WAS ONLY A FEW
BLOCKS AWAY FROM RIDEAU.
MY FATHER WAS A SHOEMAKER,
AND OUR KITCHEN WAS BEHIND
THE SHOEMAKER'S SHOP,
AND THERE WAS ALWAYS
A POT OF STEW,
OR A POT OF SOUP,
WELL, STREET PEOPLE
USED TO COME IN
AND MY FATHER'D SAY,
YOU KNOW WHERE THE POT IS,
JUST HELP YOURSELF.

A male voice says HE'S PROBABLY THE
MOST SUCCESSFUL
FUNDRAISER AND
PHILANTHROPIST IN THE CITY.

Another male voice says HE'S COMMUNITY.
EH, LIKE, THAT'S THE
ONLY WAY TO DESCRIBE HIM.

A female voice says WHEN YOU SAY DAVE SMITH,
YOU ASSOCIATE IT WITH
WORKING FOR YOUTH,
AND ON BEHALF OF YOUTH.

A male voice says HE, HE WAS ASSOCIATED WITH,
I THINK, EVERY IMPORTANT
FUNDRAISING INITIATIVE
THAT THE CITY EVER HAD.
HE'S JUST PART AND PARCEL
OF THE BEST SORT OF CITIZEN
YOU WANT.
HE DID A, HE HAD
A VERY GOOD BUSINESS.
BUT HE GAVE IT ALL BACK, TOO.

An animated postcard reads "Dear Dave Smith, Nate’s was great, and you are too. Thanks for all the generous things you do. Sincerely, Downtown Ottawa."

Music plays as the end credits roll.
