(music plays)

Clips show homeless people on the streets.

Gosaye is in his twenties, with short curly brown hair and a shadow of a beard. He wears printed T-shirt under a sleeveless black and white plaid shirt and a white headband.

He says WITHIN THE NEXT TWO DAYS,
I HAD MY PHONE STOLEN,
MY WALLET STOLEN,
AND MY ID STOLEN,
AND MY PASSPORT STOLEN,
MY CLOTHES STOLEN.
I LITERALLY HAD NOTHING WITHIN
THE FIRST TWO DAYS. NOTHING.
MY NAME GOSAYE DAVID WHITE
AND I AM HERE TO TALK ABOUT MY
EXPERIENCES OF BEING HOMELESS
AND HOW I GOT OUT OF IT.

The title of the show reads "21 and homeless."

The director says HOW LONG WOULD YOU SAY YOU WERE
HOMELESS ALTOGETHER?

Gosaye says I KNOW EXACTLY WHEN I BECAME
HOMELESS AND WHEN I GOT OUT.

The director says THE DATES?

Gosaye says YEAH, YEAH.
YOU WANT TO SHARE IT?
SO, I WAS HOMELESS
ON JUNE 28TH OF 2013
AND I GOT OUT
FEBRUARY 1ST OF 2015.
I REMEMBER JUST, LIKE, CALLING
MY MOM AND JUST, LIKE...
LIKE, "I NEED HELP MOVING."
YOU KNOW?
I WAS LIKE, "I HAVE TO GO TO
A SHELTER
"'CAUSE I DON'T HAVE
ENOUGH MONEY FOR RENT."
MY MOM HAD TO
DRIVE ME TO THE...
TO THE SHELTER IN OTTAWA.

The director says MUST HAVE BEEN TOUGH, EH?

Gosaye says IT WAS TOUGH. LIKE IT WAS...
I WAS REASSURING HER, YOU KNOW?
I WAS LIKE, "I'M GONNA BE OUT,
DON'T WORRY." YOU KNOW?

The director says WHAT WAS HER RESPONSE?

Gosaye says SHE WAS REALLY QUIET.
SHE WAS LIKE, "OKAY,
"I HOPE YOU KNOW
WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
"YOU KNOW, DON'T GET
COMFORTABLE."

The director says SO, YOU'RE NOW AT THE SHELTER
AND YOUR MOM JUST
DROPPED YOU OFF,
AND HOW DID IT GO FROM THERE?
(GOSAYE LAUGHING)

Gosaye says WITHIN 15 MINUTES
OF BEING THERE,
I WAS JUST REALIZING WHAT KIND
OF LIFE I JUST ENTERED.
THERE WAS VIOLENCE
EVERY DAY, EVERYWHERE.
EVERY DAY, THERE'S VIOLENCE.
EVERY DAY, THERE'S SOMEBODY
ODING ON THE STREETS.
THERE'S NO...
FEELING LIKE WAKING UP TO,
LIKE, COPS IN YOUR ROOM.
THERE'S NO PRIVACY IN
THE SITUATIONS, MAN.
THERE'S NO PRIVACY.

The director says ARE THERE THREE
SPECIFIC KINDS OF PEOPLE
OR, LIKE, FIVE SPECIFIC KINDS
OF PEOPLE
THAT YOU'LL SEE
AT A HOMELESS SHELTER?

Gosaye says FOR SURE. YOU HAVE THE KIDS
THAT, LIKE...
THE YOUNG KIDS WHO,
LIKE, COME THROUGH
'CAUSE THEY'RE, LIKE, REBELLING
AGAINST THEIR PARENTS.
YOU HAVE THE VETERANS,
WHO, UNFORTUNATELY, IT'S LIKE,
MAN, IT SUCKS TO SEE
VETERANS OUT THERE.
YOU HAVE THE PEOPLE
WHO LOST THEIR JOBS
AND JUST...
JUST ALMOST, LIKE, GIVEN UP,
"WHAT'S THE POINT?
I'M JUST GONNA RETIRE."
YOU HAVE THE RICH PEOPLE
WHO LOST ALL THEIR MONEY.
YOU HAVE THE OLD MAN WHO...
LIKE, WHO CAN'T AFFORD
A RETIREMENT HOME,
SO THEY'RE JUST GOING
THERE TO DIE.
AND YOU GOT PEOPLE LIKE ME,
WHO'S, LIKE, ON A SEARCH.

The director says THESE KIND OF PEOPLE AREN'T THE
KIND OF PEOPLE YOU'D EXPECT.

Gosaye says THAT'S THE THING.
THAT'S EXACTLY IT.
YES, A LOT OF THEM DO DO DRUGS,
BUT THERE'S A REASON WHY.
THEY HAVE A WHOLE STORY BEHIND
THEM, EVERY ONE,
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM
HAS A WHOLE STORY
BEHIND THEM, YOU KNOW?
SO, YES,
THEY MIGHT BE A DRUG ADDICT,
BUT THERE'S A REASON
WHY THEY BECAME THAT.
IF PEOPLE CARED MORE
ABOUT HOMELESS PEOPLE,
I DON'T KNOW...
'CAUSE THERE IS A
LOT OF PEOPLE THERE THAT JUST
HAVE JUST GIVEN UP SO MUCH ON
THEIR LIFE THAT, LIKE,
FAMILY AND FRIENDS JUST...
LIKE, IT'S JUST
LIKE THEY'RE LOST
AND FORGOTTEN, YOU KNOW?
THEY'RE NOT...
THEY'RE NEVER GONNA GET OUT.
THEY HAVE NO REASON
TO WANT TO GET OUT,
EXCEPT FOR SELF-MOTIVATION.
AND IF YOU DON'T HAVE
SOMETHING TO CHASE
OR, LIKE, A RELATION
THAT YOU WANT TO FIX UP,
LIKE I DID WITH MY
FRIENDS AND FAMILY,
THEN YOU'RE GONNA BE
LOST AND FORGOTTEN,
YOU'RE GONNA STAY AT
THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN,
JUST GETTING SHIT ON BY
EVERYTHING ON EARTH, YOU KNOW?
IT'S JUST SAD TO
SEE PEOPLE LIKE THAT.
AND I DON'T WANT TO
LIVE A LIFE WITH,
LIKE, ANY REGRETS, YOU KNOW?
I CAN'T HAVE ANY MORE REGRETS.
SO...

The director says WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS, LIKE,
YOUR BIGGEST REGRET?

Gosaye says MY BIGGEST REGRET IS NOT HAVING
SELF-CONTROL GROWING UP.

The director says SO, CAN YOU JUST LEAVE US
WITH SOME LIFE LESSONS THAT YOU
LEARNED ABOUT YOUR TIME?

Gosaye says YOUR LIFE MIGHT BE-- YOU MIGHT
BE GOING THROUGH SHIT,
YOU MIGHT BE
GETTING OUT OF SHIT,
YOU MIGHT JUST BE GETTING INTO
THE DARKEST MOMENTS OF YOUR
LIFE, BUT IT CAN GET BETTER
AND IT WILL GET BETTER
IF YOU APPLY YOURSELF.
NOTHING'S GONNA HAPPEN BUT FOR
YOURSELF, YOU KNOW?
THERE'S POWER INSIDE YOU,
BUT YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO
LISTEN TO THE INNER VOICE
OR ELSE YOU'RE
NOT GONNA LIVE THE LIFE
THAT YOU EVER
CAN LIVE, YOU KNOW?
YOU CAN HAVE A
BEAUTIFUL LIFE FOR YOURSELF,
BUT YOU JUST GOTTA BE ABLE TO
BUILD IT AND KEEP PURSUING IT.
THERE'S ALWAYS
GONNA BE MORE OBSTACLES.
THERE'S GONNA BE OBSTACLES.
IT'S UP TO YOU TO
SEE THEM AS AN OBSTACLE
OR AS FAILURE, YOU KNOW?
I CHOOSE TO SEE THEM AS AN
OBSTACLE INSTEAD OF FAILURE.
