(music plays)

The name of the show reads "Name that town."

The announcer says NAME THAT TOWN.
HOW A PLACE NAMED FOR A
CANADIAN HERO WAS ONCE NAMED
FOR ONE OF HISTORIES
GREATEST VILLAINS.

A map of Ontario shows the location of Hansen.

The announcer says HANSEN TOWNSHIP IS PART OF THE
MUNICIPALITY OF KILLARNEY
OFF GEORGIAN BAY.
IT'S A WILDERNESS AREA
LOCATED MOSTLY WITHIN
KILLARNEY PROVINCIAL PARK.
IT'S VERY SCENIC, BUT IT'S ALL
WATER, TREES, AND SKY,
WITH VERY FEW PEOPLE.
SO WHY BRING IT UP?
BECAUSE HANSEN USED
TO BE CALLED "STALIN."
IT WAS ONE OF SIX ONTARIO
TOWNSHIPS NAMED AFTER
WORLD WAR 2
FOR ALLIED LEADERS.
THE OTHERS WERE "CHURCHILL,"
AFTER BRITISH PRIME MINISTER,
WINSTON CHURCHILL.
"DE GAULLE," AFTER FRENCH
GENERAL AND STATESMAN,
CHARLES DE GAULLE.
"ROOSEVELT,"
AFTER US PRESIDENT,
FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT.
"TRUMAN," AFTER US PRESIDENT
HARRY S. TRUMAN.
AND "CURTIN," AFTER
AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER,
JOHN CURTIN.
BACK THEN, STALIN WAS
CONSIDERED "UNCLE JOE,"
AN ALLY WHO
HELPED DEFEAT THE NAZIS.
HE WAS NOT YET KNOW
AS A TYRANT,
RESPONSIBLE FOR THE
DEATHS OF
MILLIONS OF
INNOCENT PEOPLE.
BY THE 1980S, IT WAS CLEAR THAT
NAMING ANY PART OF ONTARIO
AFTER STALIN, EVEN AN
UNINHABITED PART,
WAS A PROBLEM.
SO IN 1986,
THE ONTARIO LEGISLATURE
CAME UP WITH A SOLUTION.
MPP'S CHANGED THE NAME
OF STALIN TO "HANSEN."

A clip shows a man running a marathon in a wheelchair.

The announcer says IT WAS RENAMED IN THE HONOUR OF
ATHLETE AND ACTIVIST,
RICK HANSEN, WHO WAS IN
THE MIDDLE OF HIS
MAN IN MOTION WORLD TOUR.
THE TOUR COVERED 40 THOUSAND
KILOMETRES IN 34 COUNTRIES,
AND RAISED 26 MILLION
DOLLARS TO CREATE
A WORLD WITHOUT BARRIERS FOR
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.
WE CONTACTED RICK HANSEN
TO SEE IF HE'D
ACTUALLY EVER BEEN TO
HANSEN TOWNSHIP.
IT TURNS OUT HE HASN'T,
BUT HE SAYS IT'S ON HIS BUCKET
LIST TO GET TO ONE DAY.
