Transcript: The Middle Way: Short Docs Contest Winner | Apr 30, 2014A black slate appears. A male voice is heard.
He says WHEN I PLAY GUITAR, I
JUST, FEEL THE NOTES.
LIKE I TASTE THEM.
A guitar plays in the background as an image of a pub at night appears.
A stuffed fox appears in the bar.
A man in his late twenties plays electric guitar on stage. He has longish brown wavy hair. He wears a leather jacket and pulls his head back as he plays and dances.
He continues EVERYONE THINKS THE ROCK
SCENE'S FILLED WITH DRUGS,
SEX AND ROCK AND ROLL,
WHICH IT CAN BE.
A LOT OF MUSICIANS, THEY
HIT THE BOTTOM OF THAT
AND THEY SAY, WOW,
THIS CAN'T BE IT.
THAT'S NOT IT.
AND THEY'RE RIGHT.
Candles burn inside a dark church. A sound of chanting is heard. A woman dressed in blue lights a candle and walks into the nave.
He continues JUST LIKE MUSIC, TOO, CHANTING
CAN PENETRATE YOUR SOUL.
I FEEL IN A LOT OF ASPECTS,
IT JUST GETS YOU IN THE ZONE.
AND THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS,
ALONG WITH ICONOGRAPHY,
WHICH KIND OF DREW ME
INTO STUDYING THEOLOGY
AND MY FAITH.
Fast clips show tinted glass windows and the altar.
He says SO THAT'S WHAT INITIALLY
GOT ME IN THERE.
WHAT'S KEPT ME IN THERE
WAS THE KNOWLEDGE THAT
THERE IS MORE THAN THIS.
The same man that played electric guitar in the band now chants at the altar with another man dressed in black.
The same man sits at a table in a diner. A woman approaches him and pats him on the shoulder.
She says EXCUSE ME, GOD BE WITH YOU. I HAVE BEEN TO JERUSALEM AND WHO KNOWS WHERE; AND THE BLESSING THAT YOU HAVE ON YOU MY BOY!
Another woman says HE CHANTED VERY WELL.
The first one continues I HAD GOOSE BUMPS AND I CRIED FOR THE ENTIRE DIVINE LITURGY!
The man smiles and says NO, DON'T CRY, PLEASE.
Next the man appears taking a picture with the rock group “Kiss”
One of the musicians points to the man and comments
GOOD GUITAR PLAYER
The man says THANKS, GUYS.
They answer AT 22, VERY GOOD.
He says THANK YOU.
A clip shows him chanting.
He says SOMETIMES I DO FEEL LIKE
I'M WEARING A MASK.
Fast clips show images of Jasper playing the guitar in a rock band and later chanting and playing the organ in church.
He continues LIKE I'M JASPEROS CHANTING
AND CHURCH BOY,
AND THEN I'M JASPER PLAYING
GUITAR AND GALLIVANTING
AND RUNNING AROUND ON STAGE
AND PLAYING BEHIND MY HEAD
AND DOING THIS
AND DOING THAT.
BUT IT'S THE SAME GOOF.
IT'S THE SAME GOOF JUST
EXPRESSING HIMSELF DIFFERENTLY.
THIS IS WHERE
A clip shows people kneeling in church.
He explains ONE TEACHES YOU TO BE HUMBLE,
LIKE HUMUS, LIKE THE DIRT,
IT'S STEPPED UPON, IT'S
SPAT UPON, IT'S DRILLED,
BUT IT DOESN'T SAY ANYTHING.
A clip shows him performing on stage.
He says BUT WHEN YOU'RE ON THE STAGE,
BOOM, YOU'RE KING OF THE WORLD.
YOU ARE IN CONTROL.
YOU'VE GOT TO FIND THAT
BALANCE IN BETWEEN.
A clip shows him playing guitar in his room as he plays a record.
He continues TRYING TO FIND THE MIDDLE
WAY WITH BOTH THINGS.
I HAVEN'T FOUND IT.
WHO KNOWS WHEN
I'LL FIND IT?
THE MIDDLE PATH, YEAH.
He walks into the nave of the church. Chanting is heard as he dresses in a black robe.
He says LET'S ROCK AND ROLL.
GIVE ME A BEAT.
A clip shows him on stage wearing a black leather jacket. The crowd claps.
Rock guitar music is heard and a black slate appears.
It reads “The middle way.”
