[applause]
[cheering]

Jack Layton appears among a crowd of people. He’s in his sixties, with short white hair and a moustache. He wears a white shirt and a red tie. He shakes hands with the people. Then, he stands on a short platform surrounded by journalists.

Jack says YOU KNOW WHAT,
TORONTO-DANFORTH
IS GOING TO BE, IN
A CERTAIN SENSE,
THE EPICENTRE OF A
WAVE OF ORANGE
THAT IS GOING TO SWEEP
ACROSS ALL OF TORONTO.
[cheering]

Now, Dennis Mills appears. He’s in his sixties, clean-shaven, with short white hair. He wears a gray sweater. He walks along the street, greeting people. A crowd follows him holding banners with his picture and name.

Dennis says HI THERE.
HOW ARE YOU.
NICE TO SEE YOU.

Now, Dennis faces the camera and says WE FEEL WE'RE LEADERS
IN THIS COMMUNITY,
AND WE'RE TAKING ON
THE LEADER OF THE N.D.P.,
AND WHAT WE DO HAS
A NATIONAL IMPACT.

Dennis stands on the street next to Olivia Chow. She’s in her forties and has short black hair. She wears a bright green jacket.

Olivia says HE SHOULD APOLOGIZE.

Dennis says YOU'RE THE LAST PERSON
TO TALK ABOUT HOUSING.

A woman faces the camera. She’s in her thirties, with short blond hair. She wears a burgundy jacket.

She says IT'S A BIG FIGHT.
PEOPLE FROM BOTH SIDES OF
THE LIBERALS AND THE N.D.P.
ARE PUMPING A LOT OF
MONEY AND RESOURCES
INTO THIS RIDING.

As she talks, clips show the different candidates handing out pamphlets in the streets.
A caption appears on screen. It reads “Katherine Harding. The Globe and Mail.”

Katherine continues TORONTO-DANFORTH IS A
MIDDLE-CLASS URBAN RIDING,
DOWNTOWN TORONTO.
YOU'VE GOT A LOT OF
LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS
IN THIS RIDING.

A caption appears on screen. It reads “Jack Layton. N.D.P. Candidate/Leader.”

Jack says THIS RIDING IS
VERY DIVERSE.
IT'S A PLACE WHERE MANY NEW
CANADIANS HAVE ARRIVED
AND SET THEMSELVES UP IN
THEIR FIRST WORK EXPERIENCE.
SO WE, OF COURSE, HAVE THE
DANFORTH, WHICH IS FAMOUS
FOR ITS INCREDIBLE
GREEK FOOD.
AND THEN WE HAVE A VERY
SPECIAL AND WONDERFUL,
RATHER SMALL BUT
VIBRANT CHINATOWN.
BECAUSE THERE IS A VERY
LARGE CHINESE COMMUNITY.
WE HAVE A LARGE MOSQUE
IN THE COMMUNITY.
WE HAVE A VERY LARGE GAY AND
LESBIAN COMMUNITY IN RIVERDALE.

A caption appears on screen. It reads “Dennis Mills Liberal Party Candidate.”

Dennis says WE HAVE OVER 5,000
PEOPLE EMPLOYED
IN THE MOTION PICTURE
INDUSTRY.
A LOT OF PEOPLE EMPLOYED
IN CULTURAL INDUSTRY.
WE HAVE THE BEST RESTAURANTS
IN ALL OF CANADA HERE.
AND WE'RE A TIGHT
COMMUNITY.
WE'RE A COMMUNITY WHERE
PEOPLE TALK TO ONE ANOTHER.
AND PEOPLE CARE
ABOUT ONE ANOTHER.

A man knocks at a door. He’s in his late-forties, with receding short brown hair. He wears a black suit, a white shirt, and glasses. An elderly woman answers the door.

He says HELLO, I'M LOFTUS CUDDY.
I'M THE CONSERVATIVE
CANDIDATE IN THIS RIDING.

Now, he faces the camera. A caption appears on screen. It reads “Loftus Cuddy. Conservative Party Candidate.”

Loftus says THE MAIN THRUST OF OUR
POSITION IS THAT
OUR PLATFORM IS BY FAR
THE MOST SENSIBLE ONE.
IT IS THE ALTERNATIVE THAT
IS VIABLE, REAL, AVAILABLE,
AND CAN ACTUALLY HAPPEN
IN THE NEXT ELECTION.
IN TERMS OF THE CURRENT
RACE AND WHAT TYPIFIES IT,
I SUPPOSE THE CONVENTIONAL
WISDOM IS THERE ARE A COUPLE
OF HEAVYWEIGHTS
RUNNING IN IT.
I'M NOT ONE OF THEM.

Now, he asks to a young couple who sit at a bar
ARE YOU GUYS GOING
TO BE VOTING?

The boy says I'M VOTING FOR SURE.

The girl says YEAH.

Loftus says GOOD.

Now, another man faces the camera. He’s in his forties, with short brown hair. He wears a black suit, light blue shirt, and an olive green tie.
A caption appears on screen. It reads “Jim Harris. Green Party Candidate/Leader.”

Jim says WE'RE THE ONLY PARTY
TALKING ABOUT HEALTH,
NOT JUST HEALTHCARE.
FOR INSTANCE, ALL THE
OTHER LEADERS ARE FALLING
ALL OVER THEMSELVES
TO INVEST MORE MONEY
IN OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM.
AND THAT'S A GOOD THING, AS
MARTHA STEWART WOULD SAY.
BUT WHAT WE'RE FOCUSSED
ON IS THE HEALTH PART.
THE NUMBER OF CANCERS
ARE PREDICTED TO DOUBLE
OVER THE NEXT 50 YEARS
HERE IN CANADA.
AND THE ISSUE OF, FOR
INSTANCE, AIR QUALITY,
LIVING RIGHT NEXT TO
THE DON VALLEY PARKWAY,
ONE OF THE MOST HEAVILY
TRAFFICKED HIGHWAYS
IN CANADA, AND THE AIR
POLLUTION WE HAVE RIGHT
HERE IN THIS RIDING, THAT'S
A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE
FOR RESIDENTS HERE.

Dennis says I THINK THE BEST THING IS
TO JUST GO ON THE NORTH SIDE.
BECAUSE WE HAVE A CHALLENGE
FROM THE LEADER OF THE N.D.P.
AND THE LEADER OF
THE GREEN PARTY,
THERE TENDS TO BE A LOT MORE
MEDIA FOCUS ON THIS RIDING.
SO IF PEOPLE SEE
THAT WE, AS LIBERALS,
ARE DOING WELL
IN THIS RIDING,
THEN WE CAN MOTIVATE AND
INSPIRE AND GIVE HOPE
TO OTHER LIBERALS
RIGHT ACROSS CANADA.

Katherine says THERE'S A GREAT DIVIDE
HERE IN THIS RIDING.
THERE'S A STREET THAT
CUTS DOWN THE RIDING.
IT'S CALLED
DANFORTH AVENUE.
AND TO THE NORTH,
IT'S PREDOMINANTLY
MORE CONSERVATIVE, SMALL C
CONSERVATIVE RESIDENTS,
AND THEN TO THE SOUTH,
YOU'VE GOT PEOPLE
WHO TEND TO VOTE N.D.P.
SO THAT'S WHERE THE
FIGHT IS BEING WAGED.
JACK LAYTON AND DENNIS
MILLS HAVE MET BEFORE.
THEY RAN AGAINST EACH OTHER
HERE IN THIS RIDING IN 1997.
IN THAT CONTEST, Mister MILLS
TROUNCED Mister LAYTON
BY MORE THAN 7,000 VOTES.
IT WASN'T EVEN A CONTEST.
AND THAT RACE, A
LOT OF PEOPLE SAID,
WAS WON BY THE FACT
Mister MILLS HAD A REALLY,
REALLY FINE-TUNED ELECTION
MACHINE THAT JUST KICKED
INTO HIGH GEAR AND
JUST TROUNCED HIM.
Mister LAYTON WAS NOT
THE PARTY LEADER,
SO THAT'S WHY THE DYNAMICS
HAVE CHANGED CONSIDERABLY
IN THIS CONTEST.

As she speaks, images of Danforth flash by.

Katherine continues 2004 IS REALLY DIFFERENT
BECAUSE THE AGENDA
HAS CHANGED QUITE A BIT.
NOW, PEOPLE ARE TALKING
ABOUT THE URBAN AGENDA,
URBAN ISSUES.
YOU'VE GOT TO BATTLE DOWN
ON THE WATERFRONT
WITH WATERFRONT PROJECTS
AND THE PORT AUTHORITY.
AND THOSE ARE BIG ISSUES
IN THIS RIDING RIGHT NOW.
AND JACK LAYTON IS SEEN AS
SOMEONE THAT'S ALWAYS
BEEN TRUMPETING THE URBAN
AGENDA AT CITY HALL,
AND NOW AS LEADER
OF THE N.D.P. PARTY,
AND PEOPLE CARE ABOUT THAT
IN AN URBAN RIDING LIKE THIS.

Now, Dennis is giving out pamphlets among the people in public places.

Dennis says I'M THE LOCAL M.P.
I'LL LEAVE
THIS TO YOU.
AND YOU CAN TAKE
IT, READ IT.

Now, he faces the camera and says MY PITCH IS A
VERY SIMPLE ONE,
AS YOU CAN SEE
ON OUR BROCHURE.
WE HAVE A FOUR-PAGE
BROCHURE.
WE'VE LISTED A LOT
OF THE THINGS
WE'VE ACCOMPLISHED
OVER THE 16 YEARS.
WE CARE ABOUT OUR
CONSTITUENTS.
WE WERE PROUD TO RECEIVE
THE AWARD AS THE BEST
CONSTITUENCY M.P.
IN THE COUNTRY.
VOTED BY
THE HILL TIMES.
IT'S ONE THING
TO GIVE A SPEECH,
AND IT'S ANOTHER THING TO
ACTUALLY GET THE JOB DONE.
BUT WE'VE DONE
THESE THINGS.
WE DIDN'T JUST GIVE THE
SPEECHES, WE EXECUTED.
WE'RE THE PASSION,
JACK'S THE FASHION.
THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE.

Jack says WELL, OF COURSE, I
SUPPORTED THE SARS CONCERT.
I THINK IT WAS A
GOOD INITIATIVE,
AND TOLD DENNIS
SO MYSELF.
BUT WHEN IT COMES
TO THE WATERFRONT,
WE'VE HAD 14 YEARS OF
LIBERAL REPRESENTATION HERE,
OF WALL-TO-WALL
LIBERALS FOR TEN YEARS
IN TORONTO, AND YET THE
WATERFRONT IS LANGUISHING.
HOW ARE YOU DOING, DUKE?

Jack shakes hand with a woman on the street. The woman hands him a picture of a little boy with a banner that reads “Jack Layton” behinds him. The boy seems to be very happy.

The woman says THIS IS ONE OF
YOUR SUPPORTERS.

Jack says LOOK AT THAT GREAT SHOT.
[laughing]

Now, Jack faces the camera and says ULTIMATELY, THE RESIDENTS
OF TORONTO-DANFORTH
HAVE TO DECIDE WHO
PROVIDES THE BEST SERVICE
AT THE CONSTITUENCY LEVEL.
AND I'VE BEEN THE CITY
COUNCILLOR HERE
FOR TEN YEARS, AND WE
HAVE DOZENS AND DOZENS
OF PROJECTS WE'VE DONE
TOGETHER THAT PEOPLE
ARE QUITE EXCITED ABOUT.
SO I THINK PEOPLE
KNOW MY RECORD,
AND THEY'LL MAKE THEIR
COMPARISON IN THE ELECTION.

Katherine says THAT SEEMS TO
BE THE BIG THING.
I'M A BIGGER CONSTITUENTS'
MAN THAN YOU ARE.
AND I THINK YOU HAVE
TO GIVE IT TO MILLS
ONLY IN THE FACT HE REALLY
IS HERE QUITE A BIT.
WORKS THE STREETS.
KNOWS ALL THE LOCAL BUSINESS
OWNER ASSOCIATIONS.
WORKS THEM HARD.
BUT I THINK JACK LAYTON
HAS AN ADVANTAGE
DOWN IN THE SOUTHERN
PART OF THE RIDING
BECAUSE HE'S REALLY
MADE INROADS
WITH A LOT OF THE
MINORITY COMMUNITIES,
ESPECIALLY THE CHINESE
COMMUNITIES DOWN THERE.

Dennis walks along the street waving people
He says NICE TO SEE YOU.
THANK YOU.

A young woman approaches Dennis. She’s in her twenties, with short reddish hair. She wears a burgundy polo shirt, jeans and glasses.

She shouts GAYS AND LESBIANS
WANT EQUALITY, DENNIS.
IT'S TIME FOR EQUALITY
FOR GAYS AND LESBIANS.
THE POPE ISN'T A CONSTITUENT
HERE, AS FAR AS WE KNOW.

Katherine continues THE DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE
PLAYS A ROLE HERE
BECAUSE YOU HAVE A LARGE
GAY COMMUNITY HERE.
YOU'VE GOT LOTS OF GROUPS
COMING IN AND SAYING
Mister MILLS IS WAY
TOO ON THE RIGHT.
AND THEN YOU'VE GOT
PEOPLE SAYING Mister LAYTON
IS WAY TOO ON THE LEFT.
SO IT IS A HUGE
ISSUE HERE.

Loftus says WHAT'S IT LIKE TRYING TO
RUN AGAINST TWO NATIONAL
LEADERS AND A
STRONG INCUMBENT?
WELL, IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY
TO GET THE ATTENTION WHICH
HITHERTO OBSCURE, AND
PROBABLY STILL OBSCURE
PERSON SUCH AS
MYSELF CRAVES.
JUST WANT TO GET
THE MESSAGE OUT.
AND IF THE OPPORTUNITY FOR
ATTENTION COMES BY WAY
OF RIDING ON THE COATTAILS
OF JACK LAYTON,
THEN AT LEAST HE
WILL HAVE SERVED
SOME PURPOSE IN
THAT REGARD.

Jim says WELL, FOR ME, IT'S NOT
A CHALLENGE BECAUSE
WE NEED TO LOOK AT THAT
40 PERCENT OF VOTERS
WHO DON'T LIKE THE CHOICES OF
ANY OF THE OLD-LINE PARTIES.
AND IN FACT, IF EVERYONE WHO
DIDN'T VOTE IN THE ELECTION
VOTED GREEN, WE WOULD
FORM THE GOVERNMENT.

Katherine says IT SURPRISED A LOT OF
PEOPLE THAT THE LEADER
OF THE GREEN PARTY WOULD
RUN IN A RIDING LIKE THIS
BECAUSE OF THE FACT
Mister LAYTON IS HERE
CONTESTING THIS RIDING.
BUT HE'S HOPING.
THIS IS HIS HOME BASE.
HE'S FROM THIS AREA AND
HOPING TO GET SUPPORT
BECAUSE OF THE FACT
HE'S FROM THE AREA.
I THINK IT'S WAY TOO
CLOSE TO CALL YET.
I THINK, THOUGH, AS THE
RACE GELS A BIT MORE,
AND AS THE LIBERALS SEEM
TO BE LOSING MORE SUPPORT
NATIONALLY, IT ONLY COULD
HURT Mister MILLS BECAUSE
OF THE FACT THERE SEEMS
TO BE A SEA CHANGE
KIND OF FEELING IN
THE AIR, THAT PEOPLE
JUST KIND OF WANT
SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
AND Mister MILLS COULD BE SWEPT
OUT WITH THAT RED TIDE.

Jack holds a picture that someone gives him in the street. He looks at him and says ISN'T THAT WONDERFUL.

Olivia hugs him from behind and says WOW, ISN'T IT?
SWEETIE.
She kisses Jack.

Katherine says THERE'S REALLY INTERESTING
SPECULATION RIGHT NOW
THAT IF JACK LAYTON DOES
NOT WIN TORONTO-DANFORTH,
THAT HIS WIFE, OLIVIA CHOW, WHO
IS RUNNING A FEW DOORS DOWN
IN TRINITY-SPADINA, COULD
STEP ASIDE IF SHE WINS
THAT RACE, TO LET
HIM RUN THERE.
IT'S INTERESTING BECAUSE
PEOPLE ARE ALREADY
STARTING TO TALK
ABOUT THAT.
THERE'S A LOT OF BUZZ
ABOUT WHERE WILL HE GO
IF HE DOESN'T WIN
THIS RIDING.
AND THAT'S NOT A GOOD SIGN
BECAUSE THERE SHOULD BE
A LITTLE MORE
CONFIDENCE IN THE FACT
THAT HE CAN REALLY
WIN THIS RIDING.

Olivia stands in the street next to Dennis Mills. They are talking to the press.
She says I THINK DENNIS SHOULD
APOLOGIZE FOR SAYING
TO PEOPLE THAT HE'LL
BUILD HOUSING,
THAT HE WILL RESIGN IF
HE DIDN'T BUILD HOUSING.
HE DIDN'T TO THAT.

Dennis says WE'RE BUILDING
HOUSING.

Olivia says HE SHOULD APOLOGIZE-

Dennis says YOU'RE THE LAST PERSON
TO TALK ABOUT HOUSING.
OLIVIA, YOU ARE THE LAST
PERSON TO TALK ABOUT HOUSING.

Olivia says WHY?

Dennis says BECAUSE IF YOU
COME TO MY OFFICE,
I WILL GIVE YOU FILES OF
WHERE YOU HAVE CREATED
SHELTER BEDS THAT HAVE COST
THE TAXPAYERS OF THIS CITY
38,000 DOLLARS PER SHELTER
BED PER YEAR.
I SUPPORT
AFFORDABLE HOUSING.

Olivia says PLEASE DON'T SCREAM
AT ME, DENNIS.
ALLOW ME TO JUST
SAY WHAT I'M SAYING.

Dennis turns and leaves.

Olivia says HE JUST SCREAMED AT ME.
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT.
WOW, WHAT A BULLY!

Dennis says EXCUSE ME, I WAS
BEING INTERVIEWED
BY THE JOURNALISTS,
AND I WAS INTERRUPTED.
I DIDN'T
INTERRUPT HER.
I'VE NEVER FELT
THAT THE CHOICES
WERE SO DRAMATICALLY
DIFFERENT.

Now Jacks shakes hands with a chef outside a restaurant.
He says WE'RE OFF TO
EDMONTON.

The chef says REALLY?

Jack faces the camera. A journalist asks him
HOW WOULD THIS AFFECT
YOUR LEADERSHIP
IF FOR SOME REASON YOU
DIDN'T WIN THIS RIDING?
IF YOU DIDN'T
GET A SEAT?

Jack says YOU KNOW, I DON'T ANSWER
HYPOTHETICAL QUESTIONS.
WE'LL WORK HARD
TO WIN THE SEAT.

A clip shows Jack getting into a car.
He says SO LONG, EVERYBODY!

A female voice says BYE, JACK!

Jack says SEE YA!
