On November 2, TVO celebrated the exciting new expansion of our current affairs: Ontario Hubs, at TVO Gala 2017 presented by Enercare. This year, we honoured Barry and Laurie Green, and Goldie Feldman, who made one of the largest philanthropic gifts to journalism in Canada, allowing us to invest $2 million to create Ontario Hubs.
Less than a year since announcing the Green family’s visionary gift, TVO has journalists on the ground in Northwestern Ontario and Southwestern Ontario. In both of these regions, we have partnered with post-secondary institutions to create internships: Confederation College in Thunder Bay, and Western University in London.
This new TVO team is digging deep into the issues that matter to their local communities, going behind the headlines on stories that matter to people right across Ontario.
TVO’s annual Gala is a key part of TVO’s long-term financial sustainability, and has grossed close to $1.2 million since its inception in 2012. It was my great pleasure to announce the locations of TVO’s next two Ontario Hubs: one based in Sudbury and covering the region of Northeastern Ontario, and one based in Kingston, covering Eastern Ontario.
As part of this expansion, TVO is once again building partnerships with local post-secondary education institutions. In addition to Confederation College and Western University, Laurentian University and Queen’s University will provide TVO with office and studio space, while new internship opportunities are created for journalism students.
It is remarkable that at a time when journalism is on the decline, particularly in smaller communities, TVO is creating a new network of journalists. For so many people, it is the quality of journalism that we do at TVO that sparks those moments of learning that inform and inspire us to become engaged in strengthening our communities. That is why current affairs journalism sits squarely at the centre of TVO’s purpose.
