Quantum computing, eye surgery, solar energy — all rely on humanity’s ability to understand and control photons, the basic building blocks of light.
And now our growing knowledge of photons is transforming the way we produce food.
At a public lecture hosted by the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, Cather Simpson, a professor at the University of Auckland and the founder of the Photon Factory laser centre, discussed her research into how light can be used to make agriculture more efficient and sustainable. Want to know why she fires a laser at cow sperm? Watch the video above to find out.

The Perimeter Institute’s public lectures are usually held once a month. TVO.org will stream the entire 2018-19 series.
