Ask the Expert Archive Week 4

Looking beautiful comes at a price at least according to the cosmetic companies. $50 for moisturizer, $75 for that new wrinkle cream.

We asked dermatologist Dr. Nowell Solish how much money should we spend on skin care products. It's a very common question that I get. What are some of the skin care products available? Am I wasting my money on them? There are two products available that are anti-aging, they are the alpha hydroxy acids and the Retin A creams. Any cream that you buy, whether it is a moisturizer, day cream, night cream or an eye cream, will do something to make your skin feel soft and give it moisture. If you have dry skin, apply these creams. If you don't have dry skin, like me, I don't put a cream on ever unless I'm very dry. If you are looking for anti-aging or something to help some fine lines, wrinkles or some brown spots, look for the products that contain alpha hydoroxy or see you doctor for the products that have Retin A. You should look for products that have 8% AHA or higher. That is all you need to help reduce the fine lines, wrinkles and brown spots. You can look for companies that sell these products for $200 but they are a waste of money, in my mind. You're paying just for their name and for their advertising. You can also see your doctor about buying something called Retin A. Retin A is a prescription cream that's been clinically proven to help reduce visible fine lines and wrinkles and small brown or age spots. It takes months to work and can be little irritating when you first start it but with repeated and long term treatment it really does make a difference. Don't fall into the trap of buying too many products. A lot of people buy a day cream, a night cream, a face cream, an eye cream, and I think they could all be replaced usually by a single cream. I think that people spent far too much money on their creams and they could get by with one cream applied once or twice a day. Dr. Nowell Solish is a dermatologist
