The claims about
chelation therapy are dramatic and attention grabbing. With a few treatments
you can cut your risk of heart attack by 80%, improve your cardiovascular
function, reduce chest and leg pain. Provincial health plans don't cover
it, yet clinics that perform chelation therapy are popping up across
the country. So, is it a safe and effective alternative to bypass surgery?
The American and Canadian Heart Associations certainly don't think so,
but believers and those who've been successfully treated swear by it.
Maybe you've already
made a living will. Maybe you've told family members that when you reach
the end of your life, you don't want extraordinary measures taken to
keep you alive. But when that time comes, it won't be you making the
decision. It'll be your family, and they'll be influenced by doctors
and nurses whose instincts are to keep people alive. Dr. Willy Molloy,
a leading geriatrician, has just completed a study that looks at what
happens when people are allowed to decide for themselves how they'll
live and how they'll die. You know what's behind your doctor's credentials,
but what about your nurse? Not all nurses are educated equally. And
while they all have a role, Ellie Tescher says we're relying too much
on the ones with the least training.
