Age àRelated Macular
Degeneration, or AMD, is the leading cause of blindness in people over
50. It affects about 130,000 Canadians. Until recently, there was little
doctors could do to stop people from eventually going blind. But that's
changed. A new proceedure is about to be approved in the United States
and is showing good results in trials here in Canada. There are many
promising treatments that are about to be approved by Health Canada.
But a couple of disturbing cases in recent months have Canadians questioning
the way drugs are approved, and the independence of the scientists studying
them. Murray Elston is president of Rx & D, an Ottawa-based organization
of brand-name drug makers and Dr. Miriam Shuchman teaches medical ethics
at the State University of New York.
Your child is waking
up complaining of an earache. She's miserable. And so are you. It's
tempting to take her to the doctor and ask for a prescription, but according
to pediatrician Dr. Stephen Moss, that's a misuse of antibiotics and
the dangers are huge.
