Glaucoma
They
call it the "sneak thief of sight." Glaucoma steals your sight
without warning, and often, without symptoms. Although we associate
it with aging, the damage can start in your forties. In fact, almost
half the people blinded by glaucoma might still be able to see if they'd
been diagnosed earlier. In the case of Chris Wilson, it was his
mother's misfortune that probably saved his own sight.
HRT
and Breast Cancer
Four
more years. That's how long women have to wait before we have
the results of long-term studies on the use of hormone replacement therapy.
In the meantime, we have to make up our own minds about the risks and
the benefits. Sure, it relieves your hot flashes, but if you give estrogen
to rats, they develop breast cancer. And U.S. scientists are recommending
estrogen be listed as a cancer-causing carcinogen. Dr. Paul Goss
is an oncologist at Princess Margaret Hospital and Dr. Christine Derzko
is a gynecologist at St. Michael's Hospital, both in Toronto.
They discuss the connection between HRT and breast cancer.
