Sprockets International Film Festival!
Watch two great documentaries as they airs as part of Sprockets, the International Film Festival for Children: Arctic Fever and Jambo Kenya.

Arctic Fever: 10 students from across North America set off on an expedition of a lifetime, camping, not on land, but on the frozen ice of the Arctic Ocean. Their goal is to experience one of our planet’s best kept secrets and to learn how we can better live in harmony with the natural world. We witness how they foster a new understanding and respect for the planet and for each other. In this way, we will not only be left with the excitement of the journey, but with insight on how the members of the group gain fresh perspectives, connect with the natural world, and increase their awareness of the earth as a global ecosystem.

Audience members can participate in a Question and Answer session immediately following the 1 hour documentary. Arctic Fever airs Monday May 2nd at 9:45 and Wednesday May 4th at 1:15 pm at the Famous Players Canada Square at Yonge and Eglinton.

Jambo Kenya: Eleven intrepid Canadian teens – members of a Toronto Catholic District School Board leadership program – sign up for a three-week trip to Kenya. They have no clear idea of what's ahead – just “Teach in the morning and build in the evening.” In the heart of Masai Mara country, a new world awaits. Language barriers. Lack of books and resources. Teaching in a stifling one-room classroom. Building a schoolhouse from scratch – with no modern equipment. Digging six-foot trenches with shovels. And no one expects to be chased by a wild elephant! That’s just the beginning … Nothing could have prepared them for the magic that would mark the next weeks.

Jambo Kenya is featured as a special presentation at the Sprockets International Film Festival for Children in Toronto on Saturday May 7 at 7pm at the Isabel Bader Theatre.

planet parent: trades education special
currresblmRPTbuy

fri may 6 aT 7 PM

In this one-hour special, Planet Parent examines Canada’s skills crisis. Not nearly enough of our children are learning skilled trades. Experts, like Aldo Cianfrini of Skills Canada, predict that soon there won’t be enough skilled workers to meet demand and make our economy grow. Why? Parents don’t want their kids doing those jobs, even though they pay well and are in huge demand. Nineteen-year-old Anna Petryshyn’s mother wanted her to go to university to study dentistry. But Anna is doing an apprenticeship to become a tool and die maker, a high-paying job with lots of demand. Throughout the story, we’ll hear from a candid, and often-comical panel of 10-year-olds, who tell us what their parents really think about skilled trades.

into the wild: santa cruz  currRESBLMrpt
tues may 17 at 7 pm
From the heart of South America’s rain forests to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, Into the Wild is a journey to the frontiers of animal science and the preservation of endangered species. Meet the black bears of the Bruce, the beluga whales of the Nelson River and the wolves of the Yukon, and penetrate Brazil’s secret rain forest.

This episode focuses on the plight of the Island Fox, a species indigenous to Santa Cruz. As DDT caused a decrease in the number of Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles moved into the area. Unlike the Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles preyed upon the Island Fox, causing drastic population declines. Biologists have plans to re-introduce Bald Eagles from Alaska into the Santa Cruz habitat to re-establish the population of the Island Fox.

CLASSIC TVO

Eureka! continues to be one of TVO's best-selling series ever. These humorous, information-packed programs bring "boring" physics concepts to life. Each of the 30 five-minute programs takes a simple and direct approach to the subject matter. Constant review and reinforcement make the message clear; as a result, the study of physics becomes easier and accessible — even to viewers without a solid background in the subject.
