A Great Year!
This issue of TVO for TEACHERS E-News will be the last issue until September 2005 (but contains information on educational programming throughout the summer and into the first week of September). This first year has been very successful. We have visited many school boards and universities around the province, presenting the many free curriculum-linked resources we have for teachers. We currently have over 1850 teachers signed up for this newsletter! If you would like us to do a presentation at your faculty or school board, please contact us (See the FEEDBACK section for details). In the meantime, enjoy our educational programming and classroom resources over the summer! Remember, you can see archives of all this year's issues and download all the resources at www.tvo.org/learnwithtvo

VOX: ARCTIC FEVER

|
| SUN JUNE 5 AT 6:30 pm |
| Ten students from across North America set off on an expedition of a lifetime, camping, not on land, but on the frozen ice of the Arctic Ocean. Their goal is to experience one of our planet’s best kept secrets and to learn how we can better live in harmony with the natural world. We witness how they foster a new understanding and respect for the planet and for each other. In this way, we will not only be left with the excitement of the journey, but with insight on how the members of the group gain fresh perspectives, connect with the natural world, and increase their awareness of the earth as a global ecosystem.

THE VIEW FROM HERE: WOMEN AND MEN unglued
    |
| wed july 27 at 10 PM |
| Things are not what they used to be between the sexes. Feminism, divorce, and the sexual revolution have cast aside our long-held notions of gender, courtship, and marriage. Marriage is no longer the gravitational centre of our lives it once was. What’s not clear, though, is how we feel about this. Women and Men Unglued, a new documentary by Katherine Gilday, helps us to better understand this radical cultural shift. Can we find intimacy amid the new social landscape? |

the view from here: THE CORPORATION |
| aug 16, 17 and 18 at 8 pm (THREE PART DOCUMENTARY) |
| The Corporation addresses three different themes. In the first program, The Pathology of Commerce, filmmakers examine the pathological self-interest of the modern corporation. Planet Inc. looks at the scope of commerce and the sophisticated, even covert, techniques marketers use to get their brands into our homes. The final program, Reckoning, examines how corporations cut deals with any style of government - from Nazi Germany to despotic states today - that allow or even encourage sweatshops, as long as sales go up. |

| saturdays at 4 pm, repeated the following sunday at 4 pm |
Distinguished Artists, produced by Humber students in partnership with TVO is a new series that takes us inside the careers and lives of familiar Canadian faces. The series of 13 half-hour programs were created by students in the School of Media Studies and Information Technology. Lorne Frohman hosts the informative chat-style interviews modelled after the popular Inside the Actor's Studio. The faculty professor and writer-producer goes one on one with artists such as stage and screen actress Fiona Reid, author Paul Quarrington, and jazz musician Jane Bunnett, as well as international figures such as Joan Rivers. Students studying the profession of the featured guest make up the audience for each interview – and get to ask questions.

A unique look at the life of celebrated pianist Glenn Gould, the film operates as a collage of thirty-two vignettes (which mirrors the recording that made Gould famous - Bach’s thirty-two part structure, “Goldberg Variations”) designed to paint the overall picture of the man, his life, and his work. The film won four Canadian Genie Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Francois Girard). Featuring Colm Feore. |
| human edge: keepers of memory (PREMIERE) |
| wed sept 7 at 10 pm |
The sheer magnitude of the numbers is hard to comprehend: a million or so Tutsis slaughtered by their own countrymen. Harder yet to grasp is how the surviving victims can be so forgiving. Eric Kabera’s Keepers of Memory puts a human face on the Rwandan genocide. Ten years after the massacre, ordinary Rwandans speak of their loss and how they're getting on with their lives. Their simple and plainspoken stories make the film all more powerful to watch.
