Our country is changing: it’s becoming more and more diverse with each passing year, as greater numbers of immigrants choose Canada as their new home. And while we like to think of ourselves as one big happy cultural mosaic, the truth is that fitting in and adapting can be an incredibly difficult process for immigrant teenagers. Do all Canadians have the same opportunities? Is fitting in a realistic possibility, or even desirable? And as we become even more diverse, are we even ready to handle a massive influx of immigrant teens?

first scientists |
| sat april 29 at 5 pm |
First Scientists is a fascinating documentary exploring the history of aboriginal scientific and social techniques and looks at how modern science is now catching up to these ideas. Centuries before Europeans arrived in North America the continent’s First Nations had their own system of scientific exploration rooted in their culture. In many ways, aboriginal science has many parallels to modern methods honed through trial and error and hypothesis testing. In others, this traditional science and technology is fundamentally different, focusing on relationships rather than objects, on the how rather than the why, and on the heart rather than the mind.

HUman edge: GITMO: THE NEW RULES OF WAR |
| wed april 5 at 10 pm, repeated mon april 10 at 12 am |
*Canadian Premiere* Since 9/11, suspected terrorists from around the world have been held for interrogation indefinitely and without trial at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. But what really goes on behind the prison walls? Prompted by the detention of one of their own, Mehdi Ghezali, Sweden's Erik Gandini and Tarik Saleh set out to investigate. Getting to the base, or Gitmo (to use the US military’s own nickname), is easy enough. But the gates remain locked, phones are hung up, and stone-faced officers toe the official line. Even Ghezali – who is released during the making of the documentary – only reluctantly speaks of his experiences.

| THE VIEW FROM HERE: THE UNDEFENDED BORDER |
| sundays at 10 pm beginning april 9 (3-part documentary) |
Why can an illegal immigrant with a long rap sheet appeal his deportation order and stay in Canada until it is heard? Appeals can take up to five years to be finally resolved. Enhanced border control and apprehension of illegals are only partial solutions to curbing illegal immigration. ‘The End of the Line” brings into perspective the bureaucratic machinery that is the immigration system and the level of frustration of the officers who must enforce policies and tackle conflicting priorities created by their political masters. This program also examines the apprehension of failed refugee claimants and visa overstays who often go underground while continuing to receive social benefits, it also explores the problem of illegals who make bogus applications for political asylum to avoid deportation and the apprehension and removal of war criminals. |
HUman edge: the armenian genocide |
| WED april 12 at 10 pm, repeated mon APRIL 17 at 12 AM and mon april 24 at 10 pm |
*North American Premiere* It is one of the few systematic atrocities of the 20th century that has yet to be fully explored. Between 1915 and 1923, one of the largest genocides took place in the Ottoman Empire: nearly one million Armenians were deported and massacred. These events continue to be denied by present-day Turkey. As the 9Oth anniversary draws near, The Armenian Genocide offers a timely and compelling look, as Emmy Award–winning director Andrew Goldberg seeks out Armenian, Turkish, and American scholars to help explain the political, historical, and cultural conditions that led to the genocide. Julianna Marguiles narrates; Orlando Bloom, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, and Nathalie Portman also lend their voices. |

STUDIO 2

regent park
week of april 10
Studio 2 looks at the history of Regent Park (the original Cabbagetown), to its first rebuild in the '60s (which incorporated play areas, social services, education assistance programs), to its decay (why the experiment in this planned community didn't work -- e.g., grassy field/courtyard areas meant for play also meant no streets between the buildings, meant no patrolling by police, meant illegal activities could flourish, etc...), and lastly, a look to the concept of the new re-building of Regent Park (among the changes: streets, and mixed-income housing).
