PARTNERS IN LIFE-LONG LEARNING:
TVO and OISE/UT join to offer educational opportunities to Ontarians

TVO and OISE/UT are working together on a range of exciting new projects in an emergent relationship in which two of the province’s most respected educational leaders promote lifelong education. TVO and OISE/UT will also be sharing an ongoing article exchange in Orbit and TVOntario Magazine to keep abreast of each other’s activities and continue to build community and a synergy of ideas. In addition, TVO is proud to be the media partner for two upcoming conferences at OISE/UT. Teacher Education: Teacher Education for the Schools we Need (May 13-14, 2005) and The Future of Lifelong Learning and Work (June 20-22, 2005).

TVOntario and Future ACES Student Leadership Conference

TVOntario is a proud participant of the Future Aces Student Leadership Conference: FUTURE! A Conference Empowering Students during the weekend of November 12, 13, and 14, 2004, at the Talisman Mountain Resort and Conference Centre. Three hundred student delegates from grades 7-10 will represent their schools at this conference.

Students at Unionville High School have examined history by producing film segments that TVO will air on November 11th . With the help of the Markham Stoufville Legion, students have included stories about individual veterans, the Italian campaign and the role of women during war. Students learned about the lives of these heroes and heroines in an authentic, student-directed project that involves one-on-one interviews, travel to various locations and viewing of wartime memorabilia that makes history relevant, personal and meaningful.

Delve into two different adaptations of Shakespeare’s last play: The Tempest. Forbidden Planet (1956) stars Leslie Nielson as a spaceship commander sent to rescue a brilliant scientist and his daughter who are stranded on a distant planet. In Tempest (1982) (starring John Cassavetes and Susan Sarandon) a man returns to his roots in Greece and falls for a free-spirited younger woman; his wife takes up with a Greek tycoon.

Vox, TVO’s Gemini nominated youth magazine show, is an upbeat culture series that provides a voice for teens and invites them to explore ideas, issues, and the world around them. A cold front hits VOX this season! VOX partners with Students on Ice to travels to an Arctic ice floe near Pond Inlet on Baffin Island. World-class scientists join 10 teens as they learn to adapt to the extreme Arctic conditions in Nunavut and Greenland communities. Arctic trekkers have now reached the ice floe, where they remain on polar bear alert.

Winner of 7 Academy Awards, Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) follows British POWs who are forced to construct a railway bridge in the jungle while their senior officer wages a battle of wills with his Japanese captor. An escaped American prisoner has an entirely different plan for the bridge. King Rat (1965) depicts a young British officer in a Japanese prison camp who is befriended by an American Soldier who holds court as the mastermind behind an impressive black market operation.
