Plastics can be very resistant to chemicals. Consider all the corrosive cleaning fluids in your home. Most
of them come in plastic containers.

Plastic won't pass an electric current, which is why electric wiring, outlets, and appliances tend to be covered in plastic.
Plastic also doesn't conduct heat very well, making it useful for keeping things warm, or cold.
