Each spelling bee competition, at every level, will include the following officials:
Pronouncer:
Pronounces the word for the child to spell. They also use it in a sentence and provide a definition when asked.
Judge:
Decides whether the word is correct or incorrect.
Wordkeeper:
Keeps track of the words.
Arbiter:
Responsible for ruling on contested judgements.
2 Resource people:
Responsible for keeping track of the children and their status.
Roll-Caller:
Will read out the name and registration number of each participant.

| Seán Cullen - Senior Competition Host |

Seán Cullen has been touring and performing as a
comedian for the past fifteen years.
As a member of Corky and the Juice Pigs, a seminal
group on the Canadian scene that has influenced
comedy performers as far away as Australia and the
UK, Seán burst onto the scene in 1988. Over the
next ten years, The Pigs toured the world becoming
fixtures of the Melbourne International Comedy
Festival, winning awards at the Edinburgh Fringe and
performing at the Just for Laughs in Montreal eight
times. The group was also featured on Fox’s MAD TV
and released two wide-selling comedy albums.
In 1998, after eleven years in the group, Seán struck out on his own, defining his own solo style
accompanied by the musical talents of musician Dylan Goodhue. He wrote and mounted his own one-man
show called Wood, Cheese and Children which went on to become a special in CTV’s Comedy
NOW! series and was nominated for a Gemini Award!
Seán has been featured in Time Magazine in the USA as the vanguard of comedy’s next generation. He
has appeared on shows such as The Ellen Show with Ellen Degeneres, Payne with John Larroquette and
has been on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn, hosted NBC’s Late Friday and for Comedy Central
he has appeared on Premium Blend and a half-hour special Comedy Central Presents...Sean Cullen.
Seán is a two time Gemini Award winner: in 2001 for his gala performance at Just for Laughs and in
2003 for hosting The 17th Annual Gemini Awards. In Canada you have seen him on CBC’s Air Farce,
CTV’s The Associates, The Comedy Network’s Patti and Liocracy, as well as playing the role of Basil in
the TMN mini-series Slings & Arrows.
A six-pack of The Seán Cullen Show premiered in 2003 to critical acclaim. In the summer of 2002 Seán
appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno live from Just for Laughs. He made such an impression
that he has now appeared on the show six times. Sean also hosted for his second consecutive year, The
Annual Gemini Awards, and was the host of The Just For Laughs 20th Anniversary Special on CBC.
Last year on CBC Sean Cullen’s Home for Christmas special aired, featuring musical guest Holy Cole, as
Seán returned to his hometown of Peterborough, Ontario for the holidays. This past Christmas season
Seán toured parts of Canada and the U.S. as a special guest on the Barenaked Ladies Winter Tour.
Most Recently Seán Cullen starred as Max Bialystock in the Canadian production of Mel Brook’s The
Producers for Mirvish Productions.
Seán has released a CD entitled SEÁN CULLEN Live!. It is a must listen to for anyone who enjoys
Barenaked Ladies, Eddie Izzard, spot on impersonations and absurd/surreal comedy, which is available

Joseph Motiki, born and raised in Toronto, graduated in 1995 from the Radio & Television Arts program at Ryerson Polytechnic University.
While an undergraduate at Ryerson, Joe became the host of What in 1994, a late-night phone-in program for youth on TVOntario. The show was nominated for a 1995 Gemini Award for Best Youth Program in Canada.
In March 1995, after What's critically-acclaimed run, Joe became co-host of TVOKids' The Crawlspace, TVOntario’s afterschool block of children’s programs. During Joe’s four years on the show, The Crawlspace became the number-one block of afterschool programming in Ontario, beating out YTV, CBC and Fox. During this time Joe made over two-hundred appearances at various children’s events across Ontario.
Joe also co-hosted UNICEF’s International Children’s Day of Broadcasting on multiple occasions, including the TVO broadcast that won an International Emmy Award in 1997. He was also an Ontario Spokesperson for UNICEF in 1997 and 1998 and was recognized, along with co-hosts Patty Sullivan, Kevin Brauch and Rekha Shah, by UNICEF for his work.
Joe left TVOKids in May 1999, and spent a year as an on-air feature host on EZRock 97.3 FM in Toronto. He hosted the 1999 Golden Marble Awards for excellence in children’s advertising in New York City, as well as live events for companies such as EMI Music, Universal and HMV North America. He has also served as host of the Alliance for Children and Television Awards on two occasions, most recently in May 2003.
He’s starred in many animated programs, such as 7th Portal (Stan Lee Media), Medabots (Fox), Rescue Heroes (KidsWB) and the subsequent Rescue Heroes movie, released in 2003. His numerous acting credits include Degrassi: The Next Generation, Wildcard starring Joely Fisher, Doc, Blue Murder and Disney’s The Other Me and The Scream Team. Joe also hosted 120 episodes of Kidzone on LeafsTV, the youth sports program POV Sports on CBC, and the high school quiz series Reach For The Top.
Joe, 32, traveled to South Africa in 1991-92, and is currently the host of the travel program Get Outta Town.

Tina has been the host of TVO's Imprint for four seasons. Imprint is North America's longest running book show and celebrated its 16th anniversary this year. Ontario's premier program for book lovers features the top talents in Canadian and international literature, lively discussions about literary issues, and profiles of rising stars on the publishing scene.
Before that, she spent 24 years as a host and producer at CBC Radio and Television, including four years as a producer at Morningside, and eight seasons as the co-host of Midday, CBC Television's popular noon hour programme.
Tina began her career as a researcher in 1976. She went on to cover the Quebec Referendum in Montreal in 1980.
Long immersed in politics and culture, Tina has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and French from the University of Toronto, and a BA in Journalism from Carleton University in Ottawa.
Tina lives with her family in Toronto.

Milton Barnes joins TVO Kids as co-host of The Crawlspace programming block. Originally from Ottawa Milton has moved around the province living in Hearst, Napanee, Unionville, and currently resides in Richmond Hill.
Milton caught the acting bug while attending St. Andrew's College. He went on to attend the George Brown Theatre School and soon found himself working as a professional actor. Milton has also acted, trained, and studied with Stratford Festival's Acting Company. "Hands-on experience has really taught me a lot about myself as a performer. I've learned a lot of what I know from the actors, directors, and writers I've worked with over the years."
Whether he's playing or watching, Milton is a huge hockey fan and he also loves spending time with his friends and playing with his dog, a Bichon Frise named Bizou. Milton's passion for animals comes from his older brother, who, Milton claims, knows everything about every animal.
The Crawlspace airs weekdays from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 6:00 a.m. to noon. You can also catch appearances by Milton when he visits the Nook weekday mornings from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Mary is the host of TVO's More to Life and 2nd Opinion.
Mary Ito has had an extensive career in television and radio broadcasting including roles as host, reporter, writer and producer. Before joining TVOntario, Mary anchored a daily health segment on Global TV. Health Matters was the highest rated segment on the early evening news. She also contributed lifestyle and entertainment features to Global's News at Noon show.
Mary worked at CFTO-TV, as a reporter and alternate host for the morning talk show Eye on Toronto, and worked as a replacement weekend news anchor for CFTO News.
Mary also hosted two nationally syndicated radio shows. While at CFRB Radio, she hosted a family program and an entertainment show, and produced several other talk shows. Mary was also a regular lifestyle contributor to CBC Radio.
Mary is a founding member of the annual "Kidsummer Festival" which runs in Toronto every summer, offering free events to children and their families.

Katherine is the Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Oxford Dictionary.
Katherine Barber grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and took a BA in English Literature and French at the University of Winnipeg (1980). Following a year in France as an assistante de langue, she moved to Ottawa to pursue studies in translation and an MA in Lettres francaises at the University of Ottawa (1989). She taught courses in translation, writing, and history of the language (both English and French) for five years at the University of Ottawa.
She was the principal reviser on the Bilingual Canadian Dictionary project at the University of Ottawa, then joined Oxford University Press in 1991 to set up a new dictionary department and embark on the Canadian Oxford Dictionary. She has been Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Dictionary department since then and has supervised the production of two editions of the Canadian Oxford Dictionary, which is the official dictionary of The Canadian Press, The Globe and Mail, and most of Canada's Hansard Editors; the Canadian Oxford High School Dictionary; the Canadian Oxford Paperback Dictionary; and the Canadian Oxford Thesaurus.
She received the University of Winnipeg Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000. She makes frequent appearances on CBC Radio and Television to discuss matters of language and Canadian English in particular.
Her interests outside lexicography are ballet, choral singing, gardening, and cooking.
