TVO and the Spelling Bee of Canada present:
The 16th Annual Ontario Spelling Bee Championship
On May 30, 2004 132 children from across Ontario between the ages of 6 to 15 competed in the provincial championship for the coveted trophy and cash prizes.
The spelling bee contests, held across Ontario, are intended to develop self-esteem, confidence, and interpersonal skills by exposing students to positive role models, tutors, and peer supports year-round throughout the process.
They promote community-based partnerships. A network of young people act as peer mentors for other students, and the contests support the academic growth of students, especially in reading comprehension and spelling, through collaborative partnerships with libraries, individual schools, and community-based educational programs.
