What is a Podcast? A Podcast is simply an audio file, usually in "MP3" format, that you can listen to in a few different ways. You can simply click on the file, and listen to it right on your desktop computer, or you can "right-click", and the file will download to your desktop, and you can listen to it later. A third way you can listen to a podcast is to subscribe to it. In order to do this, you will need another piece of software installed on your computer that will manage this audio subscription for you. An example of this software would be "Itunes". Why would I want to listen to podcasts? The great thing about podcasts is that you can listen when you want, and where you want. There are many podcasts available that are just like radio shows, except you decide when to listen. There are also lots of educational conferences and speeches available as podcasts; this is information that people would not normally have access to unless they attended the conference. Now, you can get much of this kind of information through podcasts. Why would I want to subscribe? Subscribing to a podcast is kind of like subscribing to a magazine: as soon as a new podcast is ready on the tvo.org website, it will automatically be delivered to your home computer, into your program such as iTunes. How do I subscribe? Once you have software such as iTunes installed on your computer, the process by which you can subscribe to a podcast is as follows: 1) On the tvo.org website, click on the "XML" button beside the podcast file. A new page will open, with some strange-looking characters. What is important about this page is the URL in the address bar of your browser. Using your cursor, highlight and copy this URL. 2) Open iTunes. Go to "Advanced" then "subscribe to podcast". Paste the URL into this box, and click "Okay". 3) The podcasts will load into your iTunes, and you are subscribed! Do I need an iPod to listen? No at all. You can listen to podcasts right on your computer, by clicking on the file. Or, you can download the audio MP3 files and transfer them into any device that will play MP3 files. | ||
