Autism Funding
I don't really know about funding.  I am wondering if children with asperger's can qualify for the child disability tax credit.  Does anyone know about that?  Thanks

disability tax credit
To get the disability tax credit, you need a particular form signed by your doctor. The doctor has to agree that the disability is fairly severe and affects the child's entire life. Your doctor may or may not be willing to attest to that. If you do apply, you can get retroactive tax credit, although at the moment I don't recall if it's to the date of birth or date of diagnosis... Just my experience, for what it's worth.

tax funding
Yes, a child with a diagnosis of Aspergers most definitely does qualify for this credit.  Whoever gave that diagnosis should fill out the form for you.  as a pediatrician I do these all the time.

Seek out your IBI Regional Initiative

Children over six with Autism need to be screened to see if they would be eligible for IBI services / funding (some children are too high functioning to gain much benefit from it).  You need to contact your local autism initiative (regional program) and ask for intake and they will help you from there.

Hope this helps.

Would there be a charge for this service?

Would there be retroactive assistance for a parent if the person is diagnosed as an adult? I am wondering because one of my children was diagnosed in his first year of University. I was a full time stay at home parent for 30 years due to special needs of some of my undiagnosed kids. We did manage to get by on one income, but there have certainly been hardships financially.

tax credit
Most doctors charge a nominal fee to complete these forms.  Usually between $20 to $50 dollars.  The form asks for a date of "disability" which does not need to correspond to the date of diagnosis.  this is to allow for back payment.  so, yes....you could receive some retro active funding for your son's diagnosis now.

Funding for Asperger's

The Federal tax credit goes back to the date the doctor fills out on the forms. This is the date the doctor feels that Asperger's (or other disability) had a profound impact on the persons daily living situation. This date can be earlier than the date of diagnosis.

You need to mail the form filled out by the doctor to the Tax Centre, then they mail you a paper stating if and for what years (past and future) you qualify, and then you can ask to reassess previous years. It takes some time, but is easy to do and definitely worth it.

If you are looking for funding, also check out "Special Services at home" and "Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities", both from the Government of Ontario.

SSAH can give the family an amount of money to spend on relief, or 1 on 1 help for your child in the community (e.g. support worker, individual swimming lessons instead of group lessons). The amount available is not related to family income, but rather to needs of the child and family (eg. you will get more if you are an immigrant with no family to help out, than if you live next to all your siblings)

ACSD is real money that goes into your pocket monthly to pay for all the extra costs we have when dealing with our children : extra laundry, more shoes or special clothing, more expensive toys, trips to doctors or appointments, specialized child care, broken blinds etc. This amount is related to your family income, and can reach a maximum of about $410.00 per month per child with a severe disability (yes Aspergers comes under that too)

For SSAH and ACSD you need to locate the forms on the website from the government of Ontario, fill them out, mail them. Then the people from the Special needs Unit will contact you to visit you. I found them very helpful to assist us to max out all the amounts we could apply for.
